“Terse answers from Climate Change minister James Shaw to parliamentary questions indicate the Greens find the GE topic too hot to handle. Discussions on pragmatic and science-based policies should not be held to ransom by merely trying to keep a section of your political party’s membership happy,” says Federated Farmers climate change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard.

“There have been plenty of media reports about a ryegrass developed

by NZ AgResearch using gene editing.

It can substantially reduce methane emissions from cattle, which eat it.

Under our current laws, the grass cannot be grown in New Zealand, and field trials are having to take place in the United States.”

National’s spokesperson on Climate Change Todd Muller asked Mr Shaw if he agreed with a statement by the former prime minister’s chief science adviser, Sir Peter Gluckman, that New Zealand agriculture would struggle to be sustainable in the long term without using gene editing.

“Mr Shaw’s one-word reply was ‘No’, the same reply he gave when asked if he agreed with Sir Peter that, there is no way that we will get a reduction

in methane production, and I can see no way that we will see an economic advantage for farmers as we shift to more plant-based foods, without using gene editing.

“Mr Shaw didn’t have to agree with Sir Peter Gluckman, but we do hope he won’t be so quick to shut down discussion of GE’s potential in discussions with groups such as Federated Farmers and others,” Mr Hoggard says.

“We have already had Green MP and conservation minister Eugenie Sage tell Predator-free NZ not to pursue the option of GE technologies as an answer to the eradication of possums, rats and other pests. Farmers are being called on to make deep cuts in emissions from their livestock. Just about the only way we are going to be able to do that, without crippling the viability of many farms, are breakthrough technologies still being worked on.

“Federated Farmers’ position is that we should at least be open to the potential of GE. We need to continue scientific and field research on its advantages and disadvantages, at the same time as having an openminded and rational debate with all New Zealanders.”

Winners selected for grand final A Turakina sheep and beef farmer has been named the Taranaki/Manawatu FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

Alex Field, 25, took out the title after winning the fiercely-contested regional final in Whanganui recently.

“I’m speechless. I think it’s going to take a few days for the win to sink in,” he said.

The event saw seven finalists tackle a series of gruelling modules, including a fast-paced agri-knowledge quiz.

Contestants had to fly a drone, use GPS technology to help set up a temporary electric fence and make butter.

Alex’s win has secured him a spot in the FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand final in Hawke’s Bay in July.

“It’s been a long-held dream of mine to compete in the grand final. I’m excited about being a part of this year’s event,” said Alex.

Almost 54 high school students from across the region worked in pairs to tackle a range of challenges in the Taranaki/Manawatu FMG Junior Young Farmers of the Year (formerly known as TeenAg).

Two Feilding High School students, Anna Simpson and Phoebe Smailes, both 16 years old, won the regional final.

“We’re stoked. We came third last year, so we’re really excited to have taken out first place this year,” said Anna.

Modules tested the students’ practical and theoretical skills and included a quiz hosted by Te Radar.

The AgriKids regional contest saw 144 students take on a series of fun agricultural modules.

eastern Taranaki was runner-up. Darren Pease from Marco School teamed up with Liam Hutchinson and Pippa Waite from Toko School to take second place.

The trio are all 12 years of age.

Hugh Thomas, Abbey Grant and Grier Cunliffe, from South Makirikiri School in Marton, were third.

All three teams have qualified for the AgriKidsNZ grand final.

CALVES FOR HOSPICE A VITAL SCHEME

As Calves for Hospice enters its second year of operation, it is hoped the scheme will establish a self-sustainable income stream towards Hospice Taranaki’s expenditure and expansion of services.

T

he scheme was initially set up following a community volunteer’s suggestion. Hospice Taranaki then scaled up, costed and established Calves for Hospice.

Hospice Taranaki trustee Clare Poole has been instrumental in getting Calves for Hospice off the ground. Clare initially asked fellow farmers to participate and support Hospice Taranaki.

“At this stage, we are asking farmers to pledge a four-day-old calf that they will send to the sale to be reared,” she said.

Friesian and Hereford bulls are preferred, but other beef bull calves or AB heifer calves are accepted. “These

calves are purchased at the saleyards,” The three stock agent companies that work in Taranaki have all agreed to donate their commission to Hospice Taranaki.” said Clare.

The other option is for farmers to donate a ‘virtual’ calf. As some farmers have only crossbred calves, which are not reared beyond four days of age, the value of a calf sent to the sale can be donated instead.

“Some farmers, very generously this year, have donated a reared 100kg bull calf that has been sold through the saleyards,” said Clare.

Calves for Hospice has entered its second year of operation

“We achieved $4,000, which was less than what was expected,” said Clare.

Hospice Taranaki covers the Taranaki province north to Mokau, south to Waitotara, east to Whangamomona, inland and coastal areas around Mount Taranaki.

It is expected Hospice Taranaki will provide palliative care to more than 650 people this year. Approximately 200 patients, including those in receiving care in their own home, are under the care of Hospice Taranaki at any one

time. Support is also extended to the individual’s families and friends.

Although the hospice receives core government funding, another $3.7 million is required this year to cover costs. Hospice Taranaki CEO Paul Lamb said all services are provided free of charge to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

“We need to raise 50% of our operating expenditure from the community each year. Being a farming province, we are hugely grateful for the way our rural supporters value what hospice does in their communities.

“This scheme is about developing new community relationships to tell our

story and help sustain our care work, the demand for our services is increasing exponentially into the future. We need to plan for this to be sustainable around the ways we work and resource for this demand.” he said Clare said as the scheme develops over time, farmers could sponsor an animal, raise it to full growth, then sell with revenue going to Taranaki Hospice.

Currently, there are around 40 farmers involved in Calves for Hospice.

“Ideally, we will have a volunteer in each district to contact farmers before spring and ask for pledges,” Clare.

On track with dairy apprenticeship

by Denise Gunn At the age of 13, Peter Arnold knew he wanted to be a dairy farmer. Now a dairy apprentice, he has set his long-term goal for farm ownership.

R

aised on a small dairy farm in South Taranaki, Peter always enjoyed working with animals.

His parents milk 200 Jersey-cross cows once daily, all season.

“Mum and Dad run the farm by themselves with the occasional helping hand from my siblings and me,” said Peter.

As a high school student, Peter began relief milking for his current employers, Aaron and Kate Murdoch. The Murdochs were the 2011 Taranaki Sharemilker/ Equity Farmers of the Year.

“From then on I knew I wanted to be a dairy farmer,” said Peter.

During Peter’s last year of high school, work experience for Dairy Trust

Taranaki led to a full-time position on the Kavanagh Farm in Hawera. Dairy Trust Taranaki operates four farms in the region.

When Peter decided to look into Primary ITO courses to further his career, he came across the Federated Farmers Apprenticeship Dairy.

“I wanted to do some training to help me progress through the dairy industry to reach my long-term goal of farm ownership. Uni wasn’t what I wanted to do,” he said.

“I want to earn while I learn, and I believe I have made a great decision and am well on track to reaching my goals.”

The dairy apprenticeship scheme, launched in October 2017, is a joint

Dairy apprentices work and study towards Primary ITO qualifications

initiative developed by Federated Farmers and Primary ITO. Apprenticeships are tailored to the individual, depending on work experience and qualifications, and may run for up to three years.

Peter began his Federated Farmers Apprenticeship Dairy almost a year ago.

Working alongside a Federated Farmers member and employer, apprentices learn the required skills for the job and gain credentials through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Primary ITO provides support to apprentices through mentoring from a Primary ITO training adviser, reviewing progress and helping to set goals. The scheme offers a pathway from school through the dairy industry. Peter has

passed Primary ITO level three animal husbandry and is currently studying level three livestock feeding.

Along with owning a farm, the Murdoch’s are also contract milking on a 150ha dairy unit in Alton, near Patea.

Peter is currently in his first season as 2IC on this farm.

“The milking platform is 135ha, and we are milking 380 Friesian-crossed cows through a 36-aside herringbone shed,” he said.

“We have two people in the shed at all times.”

The farm receives an average annual rainfall of close to 1,200mls. This year 500 bales of silage and 180 bales of hay were made.

Peter’s long-term goal is to own a farm

Peter said the biggest challenge he has faced is adapting from five days of school to working 12 days in a row.

Keeping a work and leisure time balance, with a range of sporting and social events, provides some time away from the farm. Peter attends a martial arts club in Manutahi with most of the members coming from the local community. He plays touch rugby, entering teams with mates too.

“I also hunt goats and possums for pest control on my mate’s sheep and beef farm, and use the meat for dog

tucker.” Saving up money, moving up to a manager, contract milker and then buying a small herd are amongst Peter’s short term goals.

“My long-term goal is to buy my own farm,” he said.

“I love working in the dairy industry because there’s always something new happening whether it is planned or not.

“There’s a variety of jobs to do every day.”

Picking up skills pays off

BY DENISE GUNN Stock manager Alex Field’s dairy farming background, along with a varied range of practical experience, paid dividends when he began studying towards a diploma in rural business.

A

lex grew up in Apiti where his mother worked on a dairy farm.

Although Alex tried his hand at dairying, he found it wasn’t for him.

Instead, he followed his brothers around shepherding, learning the tricks of the trade. There was no time for relaxing during school holidays either. Instead, Alex worked and trapped possums to earn some cash.

“After I met a few people, I started working for the odd farmer here and there.”

Alex started chasing a few sheep around the yards. Then, as his skills developed, he picked up a drench gun.

“A drench gun became a handpiece, and at one point I even had a pair of

loppers in my hands pruning trees.

“All these little jobs, tied in with a dairy background, helped me out with study when I moved down to Telford.”

When Alex graduated with a rural business diploma from Balclutha-based agricultural training centre Telford, he moved to Southland, working on a couple of finishing farms.

It was there that he was introduced to Young Farmers.

“A work colleague dragged me along to a meeting. I’ve been a member ever since.”

When Alex’s work on the finishing farms ended, he moved to the Waikato.

Due to remoteness his involvement with Young Farmers, was smaller.

After spending a year working with genetics and service bulls in the Waikato, he moved to his current position as stock manager on Tunnel Hill at Turakina.

The 1,000ha property runs 3,200 Romney breeding ewes and 310 Angus breeding cows, grows 150ha of maize grain and has 220ha in production forestry.

“We lamb in June and process the first lambs in October. The aim is to have the first spring lamb on supermarket shelves. Lamb is also exported yearround to 12 countries.”

As a sole-charge stock manager, Alex is tasked with the day-to-day farm operations to keep the place running smoothly and efficiently.

“Tunnel Hill is an intensive farm. Ewes are heavily shepherded at lambing and calves are tagged at birth. This means winter, yes winter, is very busy.”

“Given its unique coastal attributes, lambing starts in June. Lambs are weaned in October. They are sold under the brand Coastal Spring Lamb, which is another unique aspect of this job.”

Alex is currently vice-chairman of the local Marton Young Farmers.

He said it’s the people who make Young Farmers enjoyable.

“From that person who lends you a hand when you need it, to watching the young one fresh out of school grow into a fully-functioning adult who passes on their skills to the next young’ un to walk through the doors. It takes good people to make Young Farmers work, and it’s those good people that make it great.”

How much better can I be?

Part one The best thing about what I do is to share with clients health improvements they never thought possible. So here is the real question. How much better can I be? Can I have less pain, more mobility and more energy?

There are two parts to any successful nutritional therapy programme. The first is the actual measures we use. That usually centres on making changes to diet, supplements and in some cases referral to other therapies.

The second is time. We all want fast results when in pain. The problem is that the changes in our bodies that created the problem often occurred for many years. While some people do get faster results, for most it is perseverance during the medium term that really counts.

Over the years I have come to realise that often small changes can make a big difference. Someone could be taking a joint supplement and be getting little benefit. We change the active ingredient quantities, and there are significant improvements.

For example, someone contacted

me with significant knee pain from osteoarthritis. It was painful and limited his mobility. His only medical options were strong pain relief and a future knee replacement.

We made a number of enhancements to his diet. In most cases, this was more about substituting one food for another.

I made changes to his supplement programme in particular targeting 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin, the same amount of glucosamine and a number of anti-inflammatory antioxidants including curcumin from turmeric.

The results after six months have surpassed what he expected. He has much less pain and in his own words just the odd twinge. He is now able to exercise; he has more energy and feels better.

Better Home & Living Inspiration with colour Colours, curtains and carpets are all an essential part of designing the home environment you want.

When redecorating, have a plan before starting. Some people have a natural ability to create an inspirational space on both major and minor projects, but others find this process more challenging, including the task of picking out the perfect colour scheme.

There are many assistants at paint and decorating stores to help you along the way, as well as magazines, books and interior designers you can call upon for advice.

One mistake often made is choosing a wall colour before selecting any furnishings because the colour may clash with items you decorate with.

Some people recommend working backwards by picking the curtains, carpets, fabrics and furniture first then matching the paint.

Another idea is to select an inspiration piece of art, a rug or textile that you love and think will help coordinate the space. Choose just three to four colours from this item to use throughout the rest of the room. Any more may make

a space feel too busy. You can create depth by using material and texture and accessorise your colours in a fun way that feels balanced. Try painting a large piece of cardboard with your colour choices that can be moved around the room throughout the day and night to see how it changes with the different lights Stick with safer neutrals for large furniture pieces unless your inspiration piece is a colourful sofa or something of the like.

It is best to have 60 per cent of the room one main colour family which is usually your neutrals- that may be a beige, a deep navy, muted green or mustard yellow. It is up to you what you decide and lightening it by 25 per cent often can give a bit more sophistication.

Don’t be scared to try dark charcoal in a small area such as a toilet if that is what you think would look nice. If it doesn’t quite work, it is one of the cheapest design blunders to correct by painting over it compared to wallpaper or tilework.

There is a large variety of carpets, tiles, cur tains and wallpaper options available.

You may choose pure wool carpet to gain the benefit of a natural fibre, which many people are now turning to, or you might decide on wooden or tile floors and utilise rugs as floor coverings.

When it comes to the finishing touches, don’t be scared to mix up the tones to add your personality and gain the atmosphere you want.

If you are selling in the near future, it is advisable to consider future purchasers and which colour schemes would help sell a property.

However, if you have years left in your much-loved home, remember, it is your safe haven and place to relax so creating the space that makes you happy is what matters.

When installing or relocating fireplaces within a building there are national wood standards and local council rules which apply. There are rules on what can be burned inside a fire such as no burning of treated timber, as this may result in harmful pollutants being released into the air.

Landscaping and garden designs As with all projects, there are guidelines that are recommended when it comes to landscaping or designing your garden. These can be applied by any gardener and will help develop a more successful, satisfying design.

Hiring a landscape designer is one way of achieving your dream garden.

Other options include getting advice for your local nursery, talking to friends or people at the local gardening club and embarking on the project yourself.

When creating a space, enclosing an area is important if you want to develop a sense of refuge and feeling one with nature. Planting a row of trees such as Ficus benjamina or reducing established overgrown trees by half, creates a sense of privacy and space for designing the garden you desire. The best gardens, no matter what size they are, modulate a feeling of enclosure and openness at the same time.

The ‘regulating line’ concept is the idea that a building edge, a doorway or a distinctive landscape feature such as a prominent tree, existing pool or property boundary generates an imaginary line. That helps connect and organise a design by projecting the lines of a building or walkway with those lines resulting in an orderly cohesive, even after being softened with planting. manipulate regulating lines to create an interesting and sleek garden. When laying out patios, lawns or raised beds in a vegetable garden a rectangular proportion always looks good and can be worked around.

Another idea relating to scale and sculpting of space is to ‘go big’. If deciding on making a pool longer or shorter, or a pergola higher or lower, the answer is almost always the bigger.

An arbour with three-metre high posts wreathed in climbing roses or wisteria and surrounded by clusters of pots makes a beautiful piece for years to come without overstepping on the sense of space.

Successful planting in a newly developed or redesigned established garden is the crowning touch of a home.

Remember to plant big to small. Start with trees, shrubs, perennials, and then ground cover. If you are setting a

big tree, it may require machinery and damage a newly planted flower bed so be strong and resist the temptation to plant anything before placing any larger trees.

If designing a cottage garden, you can have a rich array of plants and if you want to use 30 of one variety instead of the three or five people typically plant, do so. For success in any garden,

the most important factor is ground preparation. It said that it is better to plant a 50-cent plant in a $5 hole, than a $5 plant in a 50-cent hole. No matter how brilliant a plan, if the plants are not well planted in a properly prepared space, the results will likely be poor. A well-dug and amended hole will help any plant flourish and thus help create the garden of your dreams.

One broken tile or small nail hole is often the cause of a massive amount of water getting into your building without you realising. An old roof can have gaps, which allow the wind to blow rain through. Missing nails also create an environment for roofing iron to be ripped from the building.

That in itself is a dangerous position to be in. One gust of wind can remove an entire roof, and the iron can end up across the farm including on the road.

It also has the ability to slice off a head or drastically injure an animal.

Good downpipes and gutters catch valuable rainwater as well as ensure that your building is not quietly being destroyed by water retention. It is often not seen until the damage is done as it can spill back under the eaves into the internal walls.

Protecting your land Healthy drains help reduce the number of contaminants lost in waterways while also optimising soil moisture and improving pasture production, stock health and the habitat for fish and helpful insects.

Hiring a contractor is a good option to fence and clear your waterways, leaving you to take care of other chores on your property.

Drains include natural or artificial channels to lower the water table and reduce surface flood risk. Fencing waterways is now an important part of rural life and reduce stock damage from treading the banks. Less damage means less build-up of sediment, which minimises the need to clear drains so frequently in the future.

Adding a grass strip and native grasses next to the waterway help filter nutrients and sediment in the run-off on drain banks.

It also improves water quality and saves money by reducing the need to clear drains. Planting shrubs on the northern bank provide shade to the drain in summer and improve fish and insect habitat whilst minimising weed growth in the drain.

If you don’t have the time, equipment or knowledge, consider engaging a contractor who can ensure waterways on your property, no matter how big or small, are kept at a maximum of health and are free from debris for the upcoming water volume increase during the coming months.

Forums for farmers DairyNZ Farmers’ Forums are being held throughout the country in April and May, showcasing what a bright future the dairy sector has, the opportunities available and how New Zealand dairy can take control of the changes on the horizon.

Focussed on climate change

New survey research shows farmers are focussed on sustainability and the impacts of climate change more than ever.

The survey, by Nielsen Research, was commissioned by the Ministry for Primary Industries through the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change Research programme.

“These latest results show that 92 per cent of farmers are focussed on making their farm more environmentally sustainable, up from 78 per cent in the last survey of 2009. That’s really heartening,” says agriculture minister Damien O’Connor.

“Some of the specific actions farmers mentioned were riparian/shelter planting, waterway control, improved fertiliser management and more efficient irrigation systems. That gives us a really valuable understanding of what is front of mind for farmers.

“Slightly disheartening is that only 23 per cent of farmers anticipate an increased focus on reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in the next five years, so that’s something for us all to work on.’’

Minister O’Connor says farmers face a changing climate.

“They need to prepare to cope with the intensifying weather effects of climate change and at the same time reduce their environmental footprint. That takes investment in infrastructure and means you need to be financially viable.

“The coalition government is scoping the development of resources and information for farmers to fill the knowledge gap in ways to reduce emissions, working with the sector

to develop practical onfarm knowledge.”

Minister for Climate Change James Shaw says that the results of the survey are consistent with expectations.

“The survey shows that farmers have a better understanding of what they are able to do on-farm to be more environmentally sustainable, with the exception of greenhouse gas emissions reduction — an area where we know farmers feel they need more information and advice.

“The Biological Emissions Reference Group report told us that there are lots of solutions emerging, but that the situation varies from farm-to-farm and so solutions need to be tailored. That is James Shaw, Minister for Climate Change why we are now investing in developing that advice and integrated agricultural emissions. That will help us farm planning tools. We need to support move forward and provide the certainty farmers and growers to transition to that will enable rural communities to sustainable land-use through planning make long-term decisions.”

Year of the nice guy

There’s an old saying that the good finish last and that it’s only an optimist who believes that ‘next year will be the year of the nice guy’. Well, when it comes to ecological credentials, it seems that year has finally dawned. A quick look at the Geneva Motor Show, the European Car of the Year, and our own local sales forecourts reveals that the electric revolution is gathering pace.

Some grumblers will call it nothing but ‘virtue signalling’ that some of the top carmakers in the world are trading in horsepower for voltage. However, you have to admit, machines like the showstopping Pininfarina Battista are both jaw-droppingly pretty and insanely fast. Did it steal the thunder of Bugatti’s Voiture Noir and the new mid-engined Aston Martin Vanquish Vision? Perhaps.

There’s no denying that Aston’s Lagonda SUV concept was 100 per cent electric as well.

Jaguar has scooped its first-ever European Car of the Year award. The only one to go to the Brit automaker, despite the E Type being utterly deserving if a couple of years too early. They’ve done so with the I-Pace, a tidy, unfussy design, which is still clearly a Jag, while clearly encapsulating modern style. It’s also purely electric.

“Currently farmers are able to drop off agrichemical containers at close to 100 collection sites around the country under a voluntary product stewardship scheme run by Agrecovery.”

Agrecovery also collects large quantities of containers and drums from farms and disposes of unwanted agrichemicals. The manufacturers who participate in the programme fund it by paying a levy on the products they sell into the marketplace.

“We all need to take responsibility for reducing the impacts of the products we manufacture, sell and use on nature and the wider environment. Product stewardship helps us shift away from the ‘take, make and dispose’ economic model to a more efficient and less wasteful circular economic model where materials are reused or recycled at the end of a product’s useful life.

“Burning, burial and bulk storage of waste on farms have been the main methods for managing rural waste traditionally, creating problems that this

The Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund has allocated $381,000, to help farmers and growers more easily recycle or safely dispose of a wider range of on-farm waste such as agrichemicals, scrap metal, soft plastics and used oil.

Rural recycling programme Agrecovery will manage the project by offering onestop-shop events where farmers and growers can drop off waste. The events will accept a wide variety of waste over and above what Agrecovery’s existing agrichemical scheme accepts.

“This funding will enable the programme to offer a new one-stopshop approach to allow farmers to drop off agrichemicals and their containers as well as other farm waste, including bulk fertiliser bags, used oil, scrap metal, silage/baleage wrap and other soft plastics at the same time,” says associate environment minister, Eugenie Sage.

“Waste on-farm has traditionally been burned, buried or stock-piled, which can have significant health risks and can cause air and water pollution. This project would see rural waste either recycled or disposed of, in an efficient, safe and managed way.

“This Agrecovery project will also help develop options for New Zealand’s first mandatory product stewardship for agrichemicals and
