The Regional Economic Development and Forestry Minister, Shane Jones, has announced that the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) will provide $250,000 for the development of a digital tool for farmers, to assess the viability of planting trees on Taranaki hill country farms.

Officially launched in February, the PGF aims to enhance economic development opportunities, create sustainable jobs, contribute to the community well-being, lift the productivity potential of regions, and help meet New Zealand’s climate change targets.

Mr Jones said landowners will be able to use the simple digital tool to identify the return on investment, and benefits of planting trees on their hill country farms.

“It could help accelerate tree planting in the hill country from current rates leading to jobs, and environmental and social benefits. The tool could include decision-making help on the Emissions Trading Scheme and utilising tools such as SEDNET, which is used to predict land management effects on erosion and sediment yield,” he said.

“It also supports the One Billion Trees programme and has positive benefits through an increased contribution to climate change mitigation, enhanced water quality, soil protection and biodiversity.”

Mr Jones said Taranaki has about 80,000 hectares of hill country in lowproducing pastoral grassland that would be better suited, in terms of sustainable land use, to some form of forestry or vegetative cover.

“Yet there has been a gap of practical information to help farmers with their decision-making.”

“For more marginal farmland, there’s clear evidence that supports higher returns for forestry per hectare compared to drystock over the rotation of a forest,” he said.

The Taranaki Regional Council will lead the work, as it has well-established relationships with hill country farmers to help diversify their land use where needed.

The development of the tool will take about 12 months and will serve as a pilot project, which could be replicated in other regions.

The $440,000 initiative is being cofunded by the Taranaki Regional Council, which will play a major role promoting the tool.

South Taranaki farmer wins regional stock judging competition

A keen eye for quality livestock has helped a South Taranaki farmer secure a spot in the final of a national contest.

Hannah Brewer was named the overall Taranaki/Manawatu champion at a New Zealand Young Farmers stock judging competition held recently in Whanganui.

It was the 25-year-old’s first time entering.

“I’m rapt with the result and very surprised,” she said.

Hannah placed first in the sheep, beef and dairy sections of the competition, which attracted 18 entrants.

“Dad’s stoked that I aced the dairy judging,” she laughed.

The South Taranaki Young Farmers member helps run a family farm at Manutahi near Patea, which has 2,200 ewes and 300 head of cattle.

Prior to returning home, Hannah spent seven years shepherding on a largescale finishing property near Masterton.

“The property was 760 hectares, and we finished 15,000–20,000 lambs and 400 cattle beasts a year,” she said.

Hannah’s win has secured her a place in the national final of the stock judging competition, which is held in conjunction with the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final.

The event is in Invercargill in early July, but overseas wedding duties could prevent her from taking part.

“I’m supposed to be heading to the United Kingdom in July to be a

bridesmaid at a friend’s wedding,” said Hannah.

“I’m going to have to ask the bride if I can arrive a bit later than planned.”

The aim of the stock judging competition is to develop the interest and skill level of young people in

livestock assessment. It is competed at club through to national level.

Cheryl Eldridge is passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool so with her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough sheep station.

O

riginally Cheryl started out with an idea to keep the sheep that originated in Denmark from extinction, whilst keeping the family farm operating profitably. That idea grew into a family business that begins out in the paddock and ends in highend fashion stores and on blockbuster cinema screens.

“We are proud of things that are 100 per cent from New Zealand and have been doing it for 30 years now,” says Cheryl.

The farm is medium to steep hill country with lots of retired bush on the east coast — six kilometres from the ocean.

“Barry is now semi-retired and our son helps me manage the farm, along with a stockman. Everything in our business starts with the stock — through to the shearers, wool classing and the artisans that create the textiles and the end products.

“It is a lovely New Zealand story and other farmers need to know there are great wools out there that we need to use. Our products are chemical free, and I have recently expanded into eco-fashi on and we are looking at ecotourism.”

Cheryl’s designs are exported across the world and even the royal, Princess Charlotte in the United Kingdom, is a fan.

Stansborough has a team of 10 staff at the mill based in Wellington, plus others on the farm when necessary, and the shearing gangs.

“It’s a dedicated team effort — on the station we run low stock numbers and also are involved in honey production, subtropicals and are considering ecotourism for diversification.

“I discovered the small flock of rare grey sheep in Nelson, which had been brought to New Zealand from Sweden 20 years prior. The elegant, fine-boned breed were traditionally farmed for their pelts and not particularly sought after in the pragmatic south for their wool.

“The flock of sheep are now called ‘Stansborough Grey’ and in early 1990 they were dumped due to the share market crash, and when I found them I brought a core of 400 sheep plus all the embryos and semen that were with them.

“I found embryologist Trevor Cook from Feilding, who had worked with them

when first brought out to New Zealand. He has been with us all the way through, as we have strengthened the breed.

“We have a ‘closed’ flock and our embryos and semen ‘Stansborough Grey’ is registered with the New Zealand Sheep Breeders Association.

We don’t sell our genetics and don’t buy any in, as our breed is specific to the wool type we need.”

Other coloured wool doesn’t have the same criteria, but Cheryl says that does not mean they are inferior in any way.

“Ours are bred as a wool sheep for our particular textile production — we are a little different as not many people do it right through like us.”

The sheep historically originate from an island off the coast of Sweden — their unique grey fleeces were perhaps adapted to keep out the keen north wind, which scours this cold land. The wool was utilised by the Vikings for making the sails for their medieval longships.

“Barry and I developed, and strengthened the traits that led to the finer, soft and lustrous ‘Stansborough Grey’ fleeces we have today,” says Cheryl.

“Our aim was to develop a fibre suitable for spinning into worsted fabric.

The line of sheep has been kept pure and it took 12 years to create what is now a flock of 1,300 animals — now a unique registered breed in their own

“We also farm a herd of 80 alpacas, have forestry plantations and have created native bush reserves, to cancel

out our carbon footprint and we produce high-quality UMF honey on the property.”

ENABLING HEALTHY SHEARING SHEDS

BY ANN MORGAN Mark and Megan Turton decided there has to be a better way to clean the effluent buildup from under woolsheds to help farmers have a healthier environment, so the couple set about inventing a solution.

ased in Dannevirke, Megan was a teacher aide at a local primary school and Mark is a fencing contractor and the ‘cleansweep’ now keeps the couple busy travelling to various destinations with their ‘cleansweep’ machine making woolsheds an environmentally friendlier place to work.

“I spent time as a dairy farmer and then got into fencing some 30 years ago,” says Mark.

“We have six guys employed at Turton Fencing Ltd creating all types of fences, but mostly farm and security, as well as pole sheds. We are always looking for an opportunity to excel ourselves and that is how we came up with the shearing shed clearing machine.

“I gave a guy a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed

and he had a big vacuum cleaner.

The day was terrible and wet, and the machine didn’t work well at all — we spent all our time unblocking it as it kept clogging.“ Mark thought there must be something easier to use for the job, but there wasn’t.

“I asked myself a few questions and came up with a sideways bulldozer system with a hydraulic motor. Every time we trialled it, we saw ten things wrong but one thing that worked, so we kept pushing ahead. It has taken a lot of time and investment to get to where we are today, but it is definitely worth the effort.”

Mark says the machine is versatile and can work on wet ground; whereas a sucking machine gets blocked.

place to be for obvious reasons — all the manure is there, and using the ‘cleansweep’ you don’t have to be amongst it. The machine self-steers and operating from the outside can reach to 20-30 metres. We assess every job prior for quoting and our service is a fast and cost-effective way of getting your shed cleaned.

“Farmers get the sheep in overnight so they aren’t wet for the shearer, who wants to rock up and get the job done — no shearer wants to shear wet animals.

The sheep also sweat whilst in the shed, so keeping the base clean keeps air circulating through the building.

“Overnight the animals empty out and the waste drops through the grating and underneath the building gets built-up.

Before long years have passed and then it is too much of an issue for the farmer and it gets put in the ‘too hard’ basket — suddenly manure is coming up through the grating and creates issues such as the ammonia smell, lack of air circulation and the wool gets stains.

“We are making the job simple for farmers and they don’t have to handle it themselves, and the end product is great fertiliser that the client keeps.

Some people give it to the local school or clubs to sell, or it is spread on paddocks.” Mark says it is important having a clean shed, as this creates a healthy space on many levels.

“Besides the sheep having good airflow, the piles and rafters aren’t designed to have manure around them, so for all the right reasons it needs to be clean under the shed. Having us do it

“We also clean the count out pens — when the sheep is shorn it goes down a chute to the pens. They generally take a bit of wool with them each time — this sits at the bottom and packs together

“We are now looking at building a second machine and going to the Gisborne area, as we are sure they

S

arah has loved horses her entire life. At the age of 10, she received her first horse as a Christmas gift. Her grandfather, a former top jumps jockey, gave her a lot of support and encouragement.

“My grandad sent me to help out at a stable for Stuart Manning, who was a good friend of his,” she said.

“So I learnt to ride track work on the beach, groomed horses at the races, and all the rest of the hard work that went with it.”

Work for Central Districts racehorse trainer, Kevin Gray, and at Lisa Latta’s racing stables in Christchurch followed.

When Sarah moved back to the Waikato, she took on employment at a breaking-in and pretraining

establishment in Matamata. She also worked on a stud farm, preparing yearlings for the sales.

Sarah continues preparing yearlings for sales, as well as running her own small stud farm, Willow Creek Farm.

The stud farm was established two years ago in Morrinsville, but recently relocated to the Bay of Plenty.

Joy’s long and varied involvement with horses dates back to 1960. Not only did this include pleasure riding, showing horses and racing, but Joy also founded and established the national registered horse welfare charity, Horsewatch NZ (HWNZ).

As a search began for a suitable stallion to send her mare, Nonna Quattro, to be bred with, an idea to help a charity also developed.

“Due to Joy’s own personal circumstances, she wanted to find someone who would be willing to take Nonna on when her condition worsened,” said Sarah.

“I then came up with an idea to donate any proceeds from the sale of the resulting foal to charity.

“So the hunt began to find something small and personal that could benefit from a donation.”

The pair also wanted to be able to follow the charity closely and help young children immediately, rather than trying to help fund research.

When Sarah came across child cancer charity, Gabby’s Starlit Hope, she sent through the Facebook link to Joy. “Joy immediately knew that this was the charity we wanted to help and see smiles light up on the faces of kids, who are in situations that make life harder than it should be.”

Joy said with her own personal link with cancer, Gabby’s Starlit Hope seemed the perfect choice.

Starlit Hope was created by the late Gabby Devine in February 2013.

A diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) in February 2012, meant Gabby had a year of intensive chemotherapy, radiation and major surgery to remove the remaining

tumour. During this time, she spent many months at Starship and Taranaki Base Hospitals.

When Gabby completed her cancer treatment, she wanted to help oncology children in their cancer journey.

She established Starlit Hope with the aim of doing random acts of kindness for oncology children, parents and occasionally oncology staff.

A major part of this was providing oncology children in hospital with boredom boxes containing seven presents — one for the child to open each day for a week. Gabby passed away in 2015 at the age of 13.

Joy’s mare, a six-year-old Thoroughbred, was initially being trained and prepared for life as a show hack.

Unfortunately due to a serious accident, Nonna is no longer able to be ridden.

“She has also had her share of setbacks, but is now 100% and ready to embark on her new endeavours,” said Joy. “The decision to join with Sarah Thompson of Willow Creek Farm, and her lovely palomino stallion, He’s All In A Twist, provides Nonna with an alternative productive purpose in life.”

Joy said Nonna will now help contribute to the young cancer-affected children of New Zealand, as they undergo invasive treatment in hospital.

The rising four-year-old palomino paint Quarter Horse/Stationbred cross stallion, He’s All In A Twist, stands at 15hh and was bred for his quality and trainable temperament.

“Due to these passed-down traits from his sire and dam, coupled with

his wonderful personality, I decided to stand him for stud duties,” said Sarah.

“So far this is paying off, with his progeny possessing the exact same traits.”

Sarah and Joy aim for a special annual breeding between these two horses with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each foal donated to Gabby’s Starlit Hope. The pair are yet to decide whether this will be via tender or a set price.

“Nonna Quattro has had two previous beautiful foals and we expect the pairing with He’s All In A Twist will produce equally as stunning foals,” said Sarah.

“We hope the public will follow both the resulting progeny and the charity as it is such a deserving cause.”

Understanding osteoarthritis

My recent seminars included detailed discussion on osteoarthritis (OA) and the many things we can do to help. My introductory point was: that it is important to see osteoarthritis as a true disease process, rather than just wear and tear.

An excellent research paper (Yudoh et.al, Arthritis Research Therapy 2005) took a detailed look at the processes that cause OA. In particular, they studied the chondrocyte cells that maintain and repair cartilage.

What they found was that chondrocytes are very susceptible to damage by free radicals.

While free radical production is a completely normal part of our energy metabolism if these are unchecked by antioxidants, cells can become damaged and eventually die.

The researchers found that over time, free radicals damage chondrocytes to the point that they die. Once this happens, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will break down. Eventually this leads to loss of cartilage and subsequent narrowing of the spaces between bones.

More recent research confirmed that accidental damage to joints, triggers the same destructive process.

Physical injury to joints increases free radical activity, which damages

chondrocytes leading to cartilage loss. Mature chondrocytes have limited ability to reproduce.

This is why death of chondrocytes is central to cartilage loss in arthritis.

Any successful treatment must address the real cause, which is adding the antioxidants that can neutralise the free radicals that damage joints.

One of my clients had diagnosed OA in his spine, but unfortunately could no longer tolerate antiinflammatory medication. I firstly put him on my multimineral/multiantioxidant and double doses of my high chondroitin joint formula.

Within three months the back pain had largely gone and was much more comfortable.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

Preparing pastures for winter Winter in New Zealand can be a difficult time for farmers. After all, we aren’t called the Land of the Long White Cloud for nothing.

This wet weather means there is an increased risk of pugging and damage to pastures, which can minimise farm profitability by reducing pasture yield of up to 80 per cent for as many as eight months.

This affects cows’ body and condition and possibly — a cow’s ability to breed.

Building pasture cover before the wet period, means the chance of pasture damage is less likely. Farmers can assess paddocks, which are most likely vulnerable to wet conditions in early autumn and graze them first.

Another simple, but effective way to decrease pugging is to take cows in and out of different gates to spread the weight.

Grazing from the back of the paddock can also minimise damage to the paddock, as the land is less trampled.

Adopting an on/off grazing strategy is the most effective way of minimising pugging damage. This means the time, which stock are on pasture or crops, is much shorter. The rest of the time they can be kept in a well-designed and managed stand-off area.

Fully dressed for the season

When we think of winter, we immediately think of negative descriptive words like cold, rain, wet, snow and mud, then consider comforting words like warm, dry, and cosy.

Wearing appropriate clothing for the conditions is the one thing that will make us feel comfortable, no matter what chores we are doing. To be warm and dry makes even the toughest jobs seem bearable, and there are many options available to consider.

Your preference of outerwear is as much a personal choice as what you might wear underneath, and there are several schools of thought on what is best, whether traditional wool or more modern fabrics.

Many prefer the warmth and breathability of a wool coat, though these can be heavy to wear when very wet, they hold the water taking a long time to dry, and will retain odour. Oilskin is another traditionally worn fabric, which turns the water well, but in heavy rain it does absorb and becomes very heavy to wear. It is very good against wind however, and definitely a good choice if you like the ‘Man from Snowy River’ look!

Synthetic fleece comes in varying weights and densities, is very comfortable to wear as it stretches as you move, it will turn a certain amount of rain, but often the wind whips right through like you’re only wearing a T-shirt!

It is possible to purchase a quality fleece-lined raincoat, which would serve well in both wind and rain.

One other option worth considering is PVC. It provides excellent protection against wind, rain and snow, but as it does not breathe well, it can be very hot to wear.

Your underneath layers may consist of a long-sleeved polypropylene shirt, which will wick moisture away from your body yet retain heat, or even a merino shirt, though some may find these too warm. A commonly purchased layer is a checked flannel shirt, with a fleece or wool jumper over the top.

Overalls are available in varying weights and styles, both for wet weather and dry, and often popular as an outer layer to protect underneath layers, and keep them clean.

Whether buying for adults or children, there are plenty of reasonably priced options worth considering.

The cooler autumn temperatures provide the opportunity to catch up on that list of ‘round-to-it’ jobs that have been left because it was too hot to do them, or you were too busy, or just didn’t feel like it!

In areas of heavy rainfall over winter, get out the mower or weed-eater along ditches and drains to ensure free-flowing water, so no damming up or flooding occurs later. Clearing culverts of any broken branches or other accumulated deadfall while the creeks are low, is a lot easier than trying to do so, when they are full of water!

Autumn planting along waterways or hillsides prone to erosion, is another productive way to spend some time now. Forward planning in this area, is a worthwhile exercise to decide which plants and trees will be best suited for your purpose. Various programmes and grants are available from some regional councils for landowners choosing to and needing to be environmentally aware.

Household firewood will be required if your home has a fireplace, and this is a good way to clear broken branches or fallen trees, or even trees that may not withstand the rigours of winter storms.

Keeping trees and treelines tidy should prevent them potentially falling on top of fences or power lines later, and if you don’t need the firewood yourself, someone will.

An added bonus, is that you will find heating your house is much cheaper as well, after insulation has been installed.

It can be difficult to check if your home has wall insulation installed already or not, so if you ever have to do any renovations it is helpful to take the opportunity to check this out too.

The World Health Organisation recommends that houses should be kept around 18 C or higher for homes with elderly, the ill or children.

A big part of keeping a house warm is deciding what kind of heating is suitable.

If you want to heat a large room, an energy-efficient fixed heater might be a

good option or, if possible, a fireplace.

This could be a modern wood or woodpellet burner, an energy-efficient heat pump, or a four-star flued gas heater.

An electric heater might be perfectly acceptable for a smaller room or rooms you only heat on occasion, as the initial price is low, but the long-term cost is significantly higher.

Keeping your home dry, plays a big part in managing a healthy home.

Eliminating dampness can be as simple as drying washing outdoors, instead of inside, and using extraction fans in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry.

Opening windows or doors also makes a big difference to create a draft and avoid unflued gas heaters.

The recommended amount of moisture in your house should be below 65 per cent. You can assess the temperature and humidity in a house with a simple and cheap hygrometer.

This can help work out which rooms need attention regarding addressing dampness issues.

Autumn brings cooler nights as a reminder of the approaching winter months, providing an opportunity to address home comforts until spring appears.

At this time of year, many people look forward to the change in seasons as relief from the hot summer sun, and the joys of indoor living once again. They enjoy the comfort of merino jumpers and homespun jerseys, warm socks and ugg boots, and replacing cotton sheets on the beds with cosy flannelette. There are many options available for buying items like these, some very reasonably priced, if you’re needing to replace or replenish this year.

For others, the joys come from spending time in the kitchen providing their family with comfort foods. Hearty and thick vegetable soups, chunky casseroles with scoops of mashed potatoes, or homemade chicken pie. If time isn’t on your side for the preparation of these, make up generous quantities and place in your freezer until needed.

A thick vanilla custard with peach sponge makes a warming dessert on a cold wet night, as does a spicy apple crumble with a dash of freshly whipped cream.

Of course, for some keeping the interior of the home well maintained is their form of comfort. These people will be thinking of getting the chimney cleaned, servicing the heat pump or dehumidifier, and clearing the drainage holes in aluminium window frames preparing for the inevitable condensation, which is about to appear.

Outside, the firewood shed will need to be replenished for homes with fireplaces, and this is an opportunity to cut up fallen trees and broken branches, and collect bags of pine cones for fire starting.

Cleaning out spoutings to prevent overflow and repairing any roof leaks are also jobs to do, before the winter rains arrive.

A tidy garden is of great comfort for some, and enthusiasts will be trimming and pruning, harvesting the last of their summer crops and planting for winter.

Lawns will be mowed less regularly as they slow their growth, and frost tender trees and shrubs covered in shrouds to protect them.

Everyone has their own form of comfort to see them through the winter, but ultimately all we really need is warmth, a full belly, and a good book to read or movie to watch! And perhaps a little company!

Mycoplasma Response funding

The government has announced funding into the Mycoplasma bovis (M bovis) Response to continue its efforts to trace and contain the disease. These funds will cover costs up to the point when a decision is made on the feasibility and economic viability of eradicating M bovis.

It is anticipated the funding will be made up of $60 million for compensation liability and $35 million for operational costs. In principle, DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association have agreed to contribute NZ$11.2 million towards the operational costs.

“M bovis is a significant concern for many farmers, none more so than those directly affected by it,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor.

“The M bovis Response is on a scale well beyond any livestock disease responses to date, with the exception of the ongoing investment in Bovine TB. M bovis is an industry productivity issue rather than a trade risk, the government sought industry financial support for the response.

“B+LNZ consulted with sheep and beef farmers about joining the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response.

The responses showed 85 per cent

support for joining GIA, and we are in the process of finalising our application to join so that the sector can play a greater role in biosecurity decision-making.

“MPI is currently leading the response and decision-making. Given the widespread concern among beef farmers about the disease and its potential impacts, farmers provided feedback that the beef industry (B+LNZ) needs to have a direct role in decisionmaking about where the response will head, including having access to the full range of information about the cost and feasibility of eradication, and the projected impacts on the cattle sector.”

B+LNZ has agreed in principle to step into a decision-making role and that the beef industry should make a contribution to the M bovis response.

“What a contribution from the beef industry would look like is still to be worked out in detail. Our expectation is that it will be based on GIA principles around allocation of costs (such as

the impact of M bovis on the beef industry relative to other affected sectors) and a full role for industry in response governance.

“We have not made this decision lightly and acknowledge some farmers may be disappointed about making a contribution. Working jointly with DairyNZ, DCANZ, and MIA we have set some conditions around making a contribution, with the key ones being: • Joint decision-making rights and with that full disclosure of information; • Beef farmers making a fair-share contribution through a Biosecurity Act levy; • Government working with industry to urgently fast-track improvements to our animal traceability systems at a mob level (i.e. eASD) and through enforcement of NAIT. “It’s important to point out the $11.2 million contribution is focussed on this first phase of the response and is without prejudice to future cost-sharing arrangements that may be required depending on next steps.

“We will hold the government to account to ensure the response and funding sought is appropriate.

“Current analysis suggests the longterm direct impact on beef production is not likely to be significant, our sector

Progressing against TB New Zealand’s TBfree programme is demonstrating progress with the reduction of testing requirements for cattle and deer herds in a few areas of the North Island from March 1, 2018.

The TBfree programme manages cattle and deer TB testing through Disease Control Areas (DCAs) throughout New Zealand that focus on areas of varying risk of livestock TB infection from the main wildlife vector of disease, possums.

Michelle Edge, chief executive of OSPRI, which manages the TBfree programme, says that as TB management in each area proves successful, disease control areas are reviewed based on detailed scientific analysis and data modelling.

“Accordingly, where TB eradication targets have been met, testing requirements are reduced. The progress of the TBfree programme is a credit to farmers, the industry and government organisations that invest in the TBfree programme and in the ultimate goal of making New Zealand TB-free.”

TBfree’s strategy combines targeted possum control, TB testing and stock movement controls to help control the spread of bovine TB beyond these boundaries.

DCA changes show the progress of TB control towards the ultimate eradication of bovine tuberculosis from New Zealand’s cattle and deer herds.

So far OSPRI’s TBfree programme has eradicated TB from 1.83 million hectares — with 7.9 million hectares of Vector Risk Area left to be eradicated.

assessed and adjusted according to progress in the TBfree programme.

From March 1, reductions to DCAs affect 317,000 hectares and 1,029 herds, resulting in more than 31,000 fewer TB tests for cattle and deer herds.

Samurai to slay stink bug Industry and government agencies are planning a pre-emptive strike on the Brown marmorated stink bug.

They have applied to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to release an organism new to New Zealand — the Samurai wasp — to combat any Brown marmorated stink bug invasion. The EPA is seeking public submissions on this application.

The applicant — the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Council — includes groups representing the avocado, apple and pear, tomato, vegetable and wine industries.

In the USA and Europe, the stink bug has caused severe economic damage to horticultural crops and has invaded homes during the cold winter months. The Stink Bug Council says a report by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, shows commercial crops at risk from the stink bug have an annual sales value of $4 billion.

They include pipfruit and summerfruit.

The council says the stink bug poses one of the highest risk biosecurity threats to New Zealand and is often

detected at the border. If the stink bug successfully breaches our biosecurity system and establishes, it will be very hard to eradicate.

Biological control by the Samurai wasp is likely to be the most effective long-term, sustainable and socially acceptable means available. The alternative, used overseas, is increased use of broadspectrum insecticides, often at high application rates.

The Samurai wasp doesn’t sting and is harmless to humans, but attacks and kills stink bug eggs. The trigger point for releasing the wasp would be detection of a stink bug invasion or an established population.

Rapid release of a squadron of wasps is critical to successful eradication, so the council is seeking pre-emptive approval, so wasps can be launched as soon as the balloon goes up.

Public submissions opened on April 11 and close at 5pm on May 24 2018.

by Denise Gunn Growing up on a 260-cow dairy farm, under the eastern fringe of the Ruahine Ranges, gave Dylan Brunton a love for living and working on the land as well as spending time in the bush.

D

ylan’s strong interest in native flora and fauna led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science majoring in ecology and zoology at Massey University. Following his studies, Dylan took up a dairy farming position in Taranaki.

“My first position was actually as a tractor operator on a 600cow high-input and high-cropping Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

“It fitted well with my interests at the time, being quite keen on machinery and wanting to experience farming a high-input system. The next season I progressed to 2IC on the same farm, which saw me being more hands-on with the stock and farm management.”

Dylan has found the link between dairy farming and the environment provides plenty of opportunities to apply knowledge and skills, gained through his degree, to dairy farming.

“Especially around impacts on water ecology, soil properties and agricultural emissions,” he said.

“In the future, I would like to pursue this more to help benefit both farming and the environment.”

as a herd manager on a 500-cow dairy farm in Cardiff near Stratford. The unit is a pasture-based summer-safe farm nestled under Mount Taranaki.

Through experiencing these two very opposite farming systems, Dylan hopes to be able to take best practice from these to use when managing his own farm. The 171ha effective Cardiff farm milks 500 cross-breed cows through

a 36-a-side herringbone shed. A 30ha runoff is used for wintering 110 cows.

“This is my first season farming in Cardiff under Dean Smith,” said Dylan.

“We have a strong focus on producing high-quality pasture through strict grazing management to achieve high production per cow.

“Farming under the mountain, we expect a lot of rain during the winter and

DAIRY early spring, so management around this time is crucial to minimising pasture damage heading into spring.”

Although unpredictable weather over the past few seasons has been testing for farmers in the region, Dylan believes his toughest challenges are yet to come, as he progresses into management and sharemilking positions. “So far, my farming journey has been about taking in as much information and getting skilled up for the future,” he said.

“Spending four years at university means I have a few years of practical farming experience to catch up on.”

As a newcomer to Taranaki three years ago, Dylan originally joined Central Taranaki Young Farmers to meet new people.

“Now some of my best friends are people I have met through Young Farmers. Aside from friends, Young Farmers is a great way to gain recognition, get familiar with local people and businesses, and to get your name out there.”

He is now vice chair for the club.

“I hold this position for our club alongside Murray Perks, as well as the vice chair position for the Taranaki Regional Young Farmers committee.”

Dylan also has a new role as the TeenAg liaison alongside Phil Read.

“We work with the Stratford High Young Farmers club to promote agriculture and grow TeenAg members within schools.”

He is the Central Taranaki Young Farmers events coordinator too.

“This basically means I send a lot of texts out to club members, trying to convince them to help stack hay and cover silage stacks.”

Last year, Central Taranaki Young Farmers won best club in New Zealand.

“It has been awesome seeing the club grow in the last three years, from about six members to almost 50,” he said.

Dylan has entered the FMG Young Farmer of the Year district competition for the past two years, making

it to the regional finals this year.

He said it was an awesome experience and a great way to benchmark his skills, and to challenge himself to improve on those.

The 25-year-old has found working with people is one of the drawcards to working in the dairy industry.

“There are so many keen and likeminded people and organisations that keep the rural industry thriving,” he said.

“Getting involved with Young Farmers has really shown me the support, enthusiasm and dedication behind the industry.

“With the drought around the coast earlier this season, it was awesome to see all the donations and support to help farmers in need.”

Dylan would like to be sharemilking or working towards herd ownership, within the next five years.

“Being part of the food industry, we can expect regulations to strengthen around food quality and animal welfare.

“So for me, keeping aware and remaining on top of the game is important to keep your operation viable,” he said.

Long-term, Dylan wants to run an efficient and productive business that produces high-quality product that is easy to market globally.

“I think it is important to find a style of farming that you enjoy and to always look at changing or bettering something.

“This will keep you interested and motivated from season to season, because at the end of the day, your farm is your home.”

Everybody is in the SUV business these days — from Bentley’s massive, country house proportioned Bentaygo, with its emphasis on luxury, to Lamborghini’s Urus, which promises velocity. The dizzying array of choices has spawned another subspecies, which is definitely worth a look — the stylish, yet still determinedly practical upmarket off-roader.

These are examples by companies, who approach the sports utility concept from its roots. In fact, both of the top examples in this field come from marques, which began in the mud and thunder of warfare — Jeep and Range Rover. Lifesaving distress beacons

Farmers, hunters, and trampers are being reminded that carrying and using a registered distress beacon could save their life.

Rescue Coordination Centre NZ recently organised the rescue of two hunters lost on the West Coast, after they set off their distress beacon.

“The hill was slipping away from under them and they found themselves in a life-threatening situation, and made the decision to request help before the situation got worse,” says senior search and rescue officer, Greg Johnston.

Two wet and cold hunters were also rescued from a rapidly rising river in Fiordland, that had separated them from their inflatable boat on the opposite bank.

“Again, the situation could have quickly escalated. If you feel that your life is in grave or imminent danger, you should first try to use two-way

communications such as a phone or radio, so that you can talk to emergency services. If you don’t have signal, then a distress beacon should be activated,” Greg says.

Hunters go bush with aspirations of shooting a stag, pig or duck and they venture to places where a distress beacon is an integral part of safety.

Farmers should also carry a beacon, because when accidents happen help is not always easily accessible.

“Put safety first, and a distress beacon is essential kit. Beacons start at $350 and your local outdoors shop should stock a selection — it is a small price compared with the cost of a life,” says Greg.
