They are a small insect with an impact on mankind that is immeasurable. In this edition, the question is asked, where have all the bees gone? There is mounting concern across the world for the future health and well-being of bees and Romi Curl of Kaiwaka Organics is one of those looking at the problem, as she recalls that as a child, wherever she explored, in bush, garden or paddocks, ‘there were always bees’. While these priceless insects are essential to propagate flora, science is also having an impact on the wider field of animal husbandry. We look at the future, and the question of cloning as a route to boosting the world food chain. Another area of agriculture attracting increasing attention is organics. For a close-up look at the local practise in this field we talk with Trish and Gijs Veling who moved to Northland in 2007 after discovering their two-hectare block in the Waiare, south west of Kaeo, while on holiday.

) SPECIAL (save $1000

Hi, from the Editor . . .

Looking for a no-nonsense, reliable workhorse at an affordable price? Then look no further than the new LIFAN 400. Automatic, with selectable 2 or 4WD, fully independent suspension and strong disc brakes front and rear, allow you to tackle the big jobs with confidence. Electric winch and 12V power outlet come standard as well.

On to our foremost showcase for agriculture, horticulture and all things to do with the land, we report on the National Fieldays which have wound up at Mystery Creek. Exhibitors are being polled over the coming months on just how their sales went, but the overall feedback has been very positive, with a record crowd through the gate on the opening day. On a more relaxing note, we examine olive growing, with Werner Seitner and Julie Mays in ‘retiring’ to a property at Doubtless Bay, only to find being by the sea is not all relaxation. We trust you will enjoy these and our regular features in the following pages.

So why pay for an overpriced tank badge when a Lifan is as good as gold!

New Chair for Rural Support Trust There’s a new hand at the helm of Rural Support Trust Northland, following its annual meeting Former chair, Sherrill Dackers, whose four years of service has seen the RST grow into a strong and effective trust said she would be stepping down “for this to continue with a change of leadership being beneficial.” Sherrill has remained on board as a trustee. Mike Eagles who is an inaugural trustee and has been deputy chair for the past four years has taken the lead role. The position of deputy chair has been filled by Hugh Rose. Sam Johnson holds the position of treasurer. The other trustees are Peter Coates, James Colville and Sue Rhynds. Julie Jonker resigned as a trustee to hold the position of secretary/co-ordinator with Julie Gregson assisting as deputy coordinator. With the co-ordination of two droughts and a flood, there was a lot to report this year. The RST established an adverse events committee which helped to co-ordinate

the resources available to assist the rural community during the difficult times, which saw the effects of the drought increase costs and stress levels on farms. A key part of the ordination was the agricultural recovery delivered one-on-one clients.

New trustees of the Rural Support Trust Back row: Sue Rhynd, Mike Eagles, Hugh Rose, James Colville Front row: Sam Johnson, Julie Jonker, Sherrill Dackers, Peter Coates

Their role was to aid in referral to professional counselling, financial advice and farm management expertise, and the application and eligibility of rural assistance payments through Work and Income. During ‘peace time’ the trust will continue to source potential funding to ensure that the impact of adverse climatic events on the rural communities and rural productivity of Northland will be minimised.

Growing Organically in the Waiare Trish and Gijs Veling moved to Northland in 2007 after discovering their two-hectare block in the Waiare, south west of Kaeo, while on holiday The sheltered, north facing block was originally part of a large farm. It is backed by never milled bush and a stream flows around it. The Velings established their block in keeping with the site’s particular situation while continuing with outside work commitments and gained organic certification in 2010. An early priority was a workshop. The new shed also houses a tool shed and a shade house full of last year’s stored seeds and garlic.

Trish and Gijs lived in the cottages on the land during a year’s build before moving into their new house in 2009. Designed by eco-architect Graeme North, the weathered Lawson Cypress house has verandahs on most sides, six big solar panels, double glazing, wool insulation, and a cooker fire with wetback. The effluent disposal works efficiently with an auto flow vermicomposting system. Gijs and Trish produce most of their food from their large organic vegetable garden.

It was started by digging over, forking, piling on newspaper and cardboard and then adding compost on top. Fertility is maintained by mulching using compost, lupin and grass clippings and the worms working in it undisturbed. The land is dark river valley soil and clay hillside and the Velings use Rok Solid, a ground-up volcanic rock, as a soil conditioner, and lime, green crops such as cut lupin and worm liquid and castings to keep up the high productivity. Paper, cardboard and vegetable scraps are recycled through two worm farms with the liquid diluted into a Trish and Gijs Veling — growing organically nutritive spray. Northern Farming Lifestyles June 2011 The importance of pollination is recognised and there are two hives. Gijs always leaves enough honey for the bees. He has also built a Top Bar hive from untreated timber and is looking forward to spring and starting off the hive. He and Trish make up pest and disease sprays while ducks and hens dispatch the slugs and snails. Along with organic pellets, the lucky poultry is given wheatgrass, sprouted organic maize and wheat. Cider vinegar and molasses keep diseases at bay. Timms traps, and a DOC 200 trap are used against possums and pests. Trish has planted additional natives along their bush walkway. “We have abundant bird life. At night we can hear kiwi and at the bottom of the property the glow worms light up the stream,” she says. The couple gains much from sharing ideas with other members of the Far North Organic Growers and they have also attended Seed Savers Club meetings and Transition Town field days. The Velings’ inspiring property reflects their commitment over the time they have been in the Waiare. “Everything here we chose with a purpose in mind,” says Gijs.

up to brave the weather and catch the end of the thriving event. “Quality visitors versus quantity remain the true indicators of the success of an event, Mr Quayle said as the gates were closing. “The value to the exhibitor continues to be our priority and getting down to business is what we do best at Fieldays. In point of fact, 32,935 visitors passed through Mystery Creek on the Thursday it opened and that was the busiest Thursday in more than four decades — since Fieldays launched in 1969. Farmers, lifestylers and urbanites found plenty to keep them busy at what has become the country’s biggest rural trade show. There were more than 1000 exhibitors and demonstrations on the 40-hectare event space with a plethora of new products, technologies and inventions to discover. Mr Quayle says the overall success of the event was evidence that the industry is looking forward “and our exhibitors are reaping the rewards of this optimism. Strategic Partner ANZ will offer an agricultural business the chance to have an expenses-paid place on its exporter tour

Olives by the Sea Werner Seitner and Julie Mays may have had retirement in mind when they moved from Auckland to Northland but Werner’s captivation by the Doubtless Bay area led them down another path and to a completely new life The couple met through the tour business in Auckland. In their first year (2002) the couple lived in the city but came up and worked on the grove. Their aim was to live from the land. They now own a three-hectare grove with two hectares planted in olives, which along with forty others makes up the Ocean View Olive Estate. “We knew nothing about olives so it’s been a complete learning curve but an exciting one, says Julie. Julie and Werner’s place sits above the sea near Mangonui. It’s also home to their cats, silkie bantams, a duck, Chester the adopted springer spaniel, and the alpacas Selwyn and Bentley. They have hives on the edge of their subtropical garden and the bees forage on nearby manuka. The trees of ‘Oliven am Meer’ (German for olives by the

sea) are nine years old and were already planted when the couple bought. It takes 10 years for olives to crop abundantly. There are few disease threats and only Copper Spray is used. The trees are planted using a post and wire system which helps with high winds as olive trees are shallow rooted. “We began using fertiliser, but with excellent advice from Andrew Taylor, president of Olives NZ, we’re now using compost sourced from the local waste station in Taipa, Julie explains. The trees have been planted on a clay base and the compost helps condition the soil so that when the trees are fertilised, the soil can better hold the nutrients for good tree growth. The estate grows Koroneiki, as well as Frantoio and Leccino of Tuscany origin, with the bulk the J5 variety developed in Northland. J5 is similar to the Frantoio variety. There are around 25 to 28 thousand olive trees on the estate and each grove has around 550 trees.

Harvesting olives by vibrating the tree

Julie is a company director and a shareholder of Ocean View Olive Estate Ltd, started in 2005. The company has a management plan for absentee growers’ or owners can manage the grove themselves. Nine other owners of groves live on the estate. The company buys the olives off the tree, runs the harvesters and owns the olive press.

Ocean View Olive Estate sells oil bulk and is actively seeking overseas markets. As well, it is working towards the product coming into stores locally from July. It is also interested in someone who might like to make soap from the foam off the crushed olives after pressing. The olive season starts in March and goes through until late May. Trees are planted with 800 metres clear and pruned in the ‘Christmas tree’ shape to a main leader, which suits mechanical harvesting. The machine clamps around the trees and using vibration loosens the olives so that they drop into the ground canopy for collection. With hand harvesting, special rakes are used and the olives fall onto nets under the trees. Ocean View Olives has six to eight local employees depending on the season, with one in training for bookwork. The olives are taken to the Italian made Pegasus 500 press which can process 500kg of olives per hour. A mix of a third green olives, a third gold and a third black makes good oil. The fruit is washed, pressed into a paste and the liquid extracted. The pressing is done over 12 to 13 hours. After harvesting the olives need a month’s settling time. “The taste is already there, it’s done for the appearance,” explains Werner, who runs the press. Ocean View Olive Estate is the first press in the North to have New Zealand Food Standard Authority certification. The company contract presses for a cluster of nearby grove owners. Last season they sold direct. “And if someone has a few trees and they want oil, we harvest one Sunday and press the olives for them,” says Julie. This oil goes into the ‘Peasant Day’ tank. “Half the oil goes to the company and half to the grove owner. We gather for a couple of hours and have wine and pizza.” There is also the ‘Mangonui meets Mediterranean’ day when the grove owners sit down to a shared lunch and a glass of ouzo. The robust, cold pressed, extra virgin oil has a slightly peppery after taste. The lemon infused ‘Dessert Gold’ uses Kerikeri lemons and is recommended over French Vanilla ice-cream and also pineapple, strawberries and green kiwifruit. Julie and Werner estimate that in two years the estate will need another press, which is not surprising considering the increasing appreciation of the premium olive oil produced here.

Where Have all the Bees Gone?

by Romi Curl — Kaiwaka Organics

The smell of honeysuckle on a hot summer day, and the sound of the buzzing bees resonates through my memory. I also recall the many bee stings that I got as a child, the baking soda, the tears. Wherever I explored — bush, garden or paddocks — there were always bees Studying the figures and statistics on bee decline I can see that estimates vary, but I know from my own observations that there really are way fewer bees around than there used to be. The only buzzing I hear these days comes from wasps. A recent Guardian report that in the US the four most common bee species have declined 96% in recent decades is the most alarming, and seems to be backed up by the many bee keepers who were

interviewed in Taggart Siegel’s movie ‘Queen of the Sun’. In Europe and Britain the decline is also rapid, but not quite as bad. In New Zealand consensus seems to be that we have lost about 30% of our honey bees over the last few years, and that there are very few wild bees remaining. Most agree that the cause of bee decline (or Colony Collapse Disorder) is a combination of contributing factors.

The theme through all speculation is our exploitation and the industrialisation of bees. Loss of Habitat: Hedgerows, wild flowers and meadows have disappeared as vast areas are cleared for farms or large crops (usually monoculture) and there is no food provided for bees all year round. Transportation: We have managed and transported bees to pollinate crops and fruit trees. This is a huge business in the US and it also happens here. Millions of bees die in holding yards and on the trucks, and the hives become extremely stressed. Bees much prefer their hives to remain in one place.

Poor Nutrition: We rob the honey from the hives and replace it with refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup — both lack the complex nutrition that honey provides. Varroa Mite: This small pest sucks the blood of bees. The chemicals that are used to treat varroa worked for a while but now it is becoming resistant. The strength has to be increased and this affects the bees. Some believe that the treatments used against the varroa mite may be leaving hives open to the onslaught of powerful pathogens, likened to the overuse of antibiotics for humans. When bees are left to build their own honey cells, they make them smaller than the cells that humans provide in

World Wide Bee Trading: Bee pathogens and pests have been swapped and spread as trading has increased to make up for losses. Genetic Engineering: Major crops in the US are engineered to be resistant to Round-up. This has lead to much greater use of this herbicide, also undermining bee health. Pesticides: The Neo- nicotinoid group of pesticides has come up repeatedly in my research. ERMA admit that they knew these were highly toxic to bees when they were cleared for use in New Zealand. Of all of the changes that we can and need to make in order to restore bee populations, this last seems to be the most pressing. Neonicotinoids like Imidacloprid are used as maize, grass and brassica seed dressing. In NZ the products are sold as Gaucho and Poncho. They are designed to work systemically in the plants to kill insects. A call for a review of these chemicals has been rejected by Federated Farmers, and Foundation for Arable Research CEO, Nick Pyke, is reported to have said that there is no evidence, as “most insecticides are pretty short-lived, and unless they actually contact the bees, then they’re not going to do anything to them.” But insecticides are designed to kill insects. Bees are insects. There is no insecticide capable of making the distinction! The chemical comes out in the pollen and through water droplets from the plants and bees drink this water. So ERMA’s claim that these products are sold with strict controls is completely flaccid and any ‘restrictions’ are unenforceable and in effect irrelevant. A review of these and other highly toxic pesticides in use in New Zealand must certainly be a first step. Farmers and horticulturalists more than any of us should realise the dire consequences of a world without bees.

Results of a detailed study on bee decline carried out by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) were released this March. Achim Steiner, the executive director of the programme concluded: “Human beings have fabricated the illusion that in the 21st century they have the technological prowess to be independent of nature. “Bees underline the reality that we are more, not less dependent on nature’s services in a world of close to 7 billion people. Of the 100 crop species that supply 90% of the world’s food, bees pollinate 70%.” This includes almost all fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds, vegetable oil crops, coffee, soya beans, clover and alfalfa (cattle food) and cotton. This should be of concern to all of us. It will affect all of us. There is a lot that you can do. In your own garden you can grow more flowers that are attractive to bees and provide a sanctuary for them by not using pesticides. Write to ERMA and encourage them to carry out the chemical use review. Be part of the buzz on bees, talk to your friends, tell your kids. Look on the Internet — if you google ‘colony collapse’ there is heaps of information. We all need to help to save the bees.

Open Day for Innovation By Paul Campbell

Brothers Lyle and Garth Preston, farm some 368 hectares at Ruawai, as well as having interests in the South Island, and they’re demonstrating their faith in dairying with a major investment at their Ruawai home farm.

“New Zealand is a world dairying leader, and there are still great opportunities open here,” said Garth. On Friday, June 24, the brothers will host an open day at their new dairy shed with a covered hospital race, a rubber-covered feed pad and a state of the art effluent system — all with a price tag expected to reach $1.7 million plus. At it’s heart is a Milfos 60-bail iFlow rotary platform, an iConveyer milking machine, iRC cup removers with cow restraints and a drop down system. “The Preston partnership has been contemplating this major upgrade for a number of years,” said Mark McKewen, from Milfos.

“It’s not only a traditional industry, it’s a growth industry, with fantastic people and services across the board.”

been very good communication and cooperation with the sole aim of a happy client.” Garth Preston says the rubber covered feed pad is a major innovation that is flood-washed with recycled water. He adds the partnership is milking about 800 cows this year. “We plan to build this to about 850, a rise from 750 over the past couple of seasons with most young stock staying on. “The property has been in the family since my grandfather settled here in 1919 after the First Wold War with the property added onto over the years and now tripled under Lyle and myself. “In fact as an example of just how

He also did the water system. When Graham upgraded to a Protrack system in his herringbone shed, he knew he was getting an awesome piece of farm automation equipment, what he didn’t realise was that it was also the best piece of multisport equipment he’d ever bought. He reckons that the time he used to spend in the shed is far better spent clocking up the miles doing what he loves; training for, and competing in multisport events. And now, with the time he’s saved, he can do more of it than ever. You may not be as mad as Graham, but we’re sure you will be able to think of something to do with the time a Protrack system can save you.

dairying has grown, you only need to look at what’s happened in the South Island. A decade or so back, dairying accounted for about eight per cent of farming down there — now it is over 30 per cent. “Dairying is a dynamic industry with fantastic services and infrastructure, including of course, Fonterra.”

GORSE GONE IN A DAY Improve your land’s value in hours by removing gorse and other noxious weeds without chemical sprays Transforming paddocks from unusable eyesores into great looking areas that help pay for themselves is keeping Ken Borg’s company busy. Ken has been in business since 1997 as a qualified builder and started All About Earth Moving 2005 to offer clients a range of land enhancement services. The purchase of an $80,000 mulching attachment to his digger gave the company an edge and led the company into a whole new area of land clearing services. The firm’s go-anywhere digger is able to clear acres of gorse, long grass and noxious weeds in a matter of hours. “Land is expensive and so owners need to make every inch pay for itself,” says Ken. “Whether they want to increase grazing land for their cattle or increase the land’s resale value, removing unwanted shrubbery such as gorse can make a big difference.” All About Earth Moving’s services really is a case of ‘no job too big’ as its machinery is able to access any gradient and plough into gorse the size of trees — and mulch it down to nothing. “The mulcher is very powerful and can turn gorse into tiny fragments,” says Ken. “Getting good results is far quicker than spraying which can take months to kill gorse. Even after gorse is dead, it still sits on the land looking brown and horrible – it can take years to deteriorate and break down. “Using the mulcher gives an instant result, the gorse is there one moment and gone the next.” Mulching gorse saves on using expensive and dangerous chemical sprays too, says Ken. “There is a place for spraying gorse because we all know that this is a hardy weed that doesn’t die easily,” says Ken. “Gorse seeds can live in the ground for up to 50 years — so the best anyone can do is manage the problem.” Ken recommends people save money by using a selective spray on gorse re-sprouting that may appear the following season after the machine has been over the land. “Gorse can really choke up the land, so by removing it we give grass a chance to grow,” says Ken. “Of course, gorse may begin to sprout in time, so we recommend the land owner keep an eye on this and perform targeted spraying when required, normally the following season. “This saves a fortune in chemicals and is better for the land. Mass spraying of large areas is not something I would recommend as it can also take out native bush that you are trying to keep.

“Mulching breaks up the gorse so it rots down and puts nutrients into the soil to promote grass growth, the mulch also stops soil run off when it rains. Ken says real estate agents value the work his firm does as removing gorse increases the chances of land being sold. “Real estate agents know we can make land far more attractive and sellable — after all — who wants to buy land covered in acres of gorse and other noxious weeds? “What we can offer people is a very quick way to add value to their land. So it is a perfect solution for land owners who need to free land up for grazing live stock.” Apart from gorse, All About Earth Moving can remove all sorts of noxious weeds on steep hills, including trees still standing in place down to ground level. “Using track grips fitted to our digger means our machinery can go anywhere,” says Ken. ”And while long grass may not be such a big problem during winter, in summer it can be a fire hazard. We can remove it quickly and easily and give landowners peace of mind.” Some people find it hard to understand what an effective job the company’s machinery can do.

“So we had a video made so people can see with their own eyes how we can transform a paddock in hours — anyone can watch it on our website,” says Ken. Using such powerful machinery, health and safety comes first, second and third for Ken. “The safety of people, livestock and property is the top priority for us,” he says. “We understand we are working on other people’s land with very powerful machinery. So health and safety is a priority.” Naturally, the company is fully insured so landowners can be confident that if anything untoward did happen on site, they will not be left out of pocket. “Our business is built on our reputation, people trust us and building on that trust is very important to me personally,” says Ken. Farmer suffers

NASTY cut to the hand Let’s face it...hoof trimming is part of good herd management. However, there are safe ways and unsafe ways to do it! Recently we heard of a situation where a farmer had a cow tied up to a gate for trimming. The cow kicked out and well... the rest is history as you can see above....

Tucked away in picturesque Taipa, Swiss scientist, Andreas Kurmann, director of Far North Envirolab, has spent the last eight months working on a system that can convert plant and vegetable matter into ethanol fuel, fertiliser and stock food. And, in the face of rising petrol costs, his idea is already generating a higher than expected level of interest amongst the local community. “I was expecting about 30 people to attend the first workshop I ran and about 100 turned up so I am now putting on a second one on the 25th June,” he explains. “I am not doing this for financial benefit. I am doing it because I care about the environment. This means that the manual on the distilling process will be available from Far North Envirolab on request for basically the copying costs. Andreas’ methods use a wide variety of materials, from kiwifruit to plums and, further down the line, maybe even grass clippings and Manchurian rice grass. As well as fuel the system produces a fermented organic fertiliser. While producing ethanol from high sugar sources such as fruit is fairly simple, extracting ethanol from other types of vegetable matter, such as grass clippings, is more complicated. “I am researching different enzymes from all over the world to find the ideal enzyme to convert different starches to

I believe that by increasing the availability of ethanol-based fuels we can avoid the increasing prices at the petrol pump, become more energy independent, and slow global warming. In addition, ethanol fuel production can be environmentally sustainable, revitalise farms and communities, and create huge new opportunities for smallscale businesses. Whatever the scale of the plant as long as we spend less energy to produce our own fuel it will be environmentally friendly. Ethanol is much cleaner than petrol and you can use it in your car right now,” Andreas explains. “The idea of running vehicles on ethanol is not a new one. Rio Bound

by Dave Wolland

During the last decade, many of the larger South American economies have been growing strongly. Banana Republics and Dictatorships have been transformed into progressive democracies and their people were rewarded with a rise in their standard of living. Fonterra has been cashing in on this change of fortune by investing in dairy processing enterprises there as well as supplying them with milk products from New Zealand. Their latest venture is in buying 850 hectares of farmland in the Brazilian province of Goias and setting up a New Zealanddesigned dairy farm. It will supply a local processing company, and milk around 3,300 cows in two milking sheds. Fonterra obviously thinks that it is better to join in with the opposition rather than competing with them head to head. It is very likely that some kiwi dairy farmers will be concerned about this — especially in light of the PGG Wrightson’s problems after investing in Uraguay farms. This sort of investment is, of, course not new to Fonterra — which these days provides 30–40% of the international tradeable milk supply with dairy products from New Zealand and other countries. Its options in New Zealand for expansion have been limited by Government regulations and the decreasing amount of suitable land for new dairy farms. Therefore overseas investment has been t .BJ[F IBSWFTUJOH 1MBOUJOH seen to be a logical way to grow the t 4RVBSF 4JMBHF )BZ company. t .VMDIJOH In the reported words of their CEO, Andrew Ferrier, “This pilot project will allow t .VDL 4QSFBEJOH us to develop and test the right model t $VMUJWBUJPO for our own dairy farming operation. This demand will not be met by milk produced Call Grant locally.” 0274 788 472 t 09 435 1310 Those words will provide little comfort

for farmers who see Fonterra as a New Zealand-owned farmers co-operative and not an international dairy corporation like Nestlé. Strangely enough, Fonterra finds it acceptable to buy farms in Brazil and yet wishes to keep New Zealand farms locally owned. As Fonterra chairman, Sir Henry Van Der Heyden has been reported to say, “I want to see as many farms as possible stay in local hands (in NZ).” If this is so, then setting up dairy farms in Brazil and sharing New Zealand’s technology and capital seems to be a strange way to go about it. New Zealand ownership of farms at home is hard to argue for, if you are buying up farms in other countries. Consequently, our Government has allowed an increasing

number of New Zealand farms to fall into foreign hands and these have the potential to buy up Fonterra from the inside. In New Zealand, dairy farmers are also having to change their currently ‘dirty dairying’ behaviour and adopt a ‘clean streams’ approach to give some credibility to our very good environmental reputation. It requires a considerable amount of investment and it could be argued that this should be given a greater priority than expansion overseas. In Brazil, the Goias district apparently faces similar environmental problems to New Zealand. It will be interesting to see if Fonterra’s trial farms are environmentally friendly, or merely shifting ‘dirty dairying’ offshore.

with Julie Jonker

During my involvement with the Rural Support Trust I have been impressed by the number of women who are actively engaged within the agricultural sector. They occupy all aspects from being on farm and participating in the day to day tasks to sitting on boards and influencing decisions at a company or community level. How they manage to fit these activities in amongst standard household and family duties never fails to amaze me. The most incredible thing is that each one of them thinks little of their contribution and they don’t expect recognition for their efforts. It is pleasing to see that the Dairy Women’s Network have re-established a group in Waipu and the turnout at the seminar on calf rearing sponsored by Inter vet Schering Plough was heartening. The women came from as far afield as Tomarata through to Hikurangi and the dinner at The Beach House was delicious. There was a good mix of owners, sharemilkers and contract milkers which is a good opportunity to see things from differing perspectives making these evenings an ideal time to network and simply take a break from the normal routine. Mixing with like minded people provides an opportunity to share ideas and questions. The Vet Centre’s presentation by Kelly Andrews on the do’s and don’ts on calf rearing was quite illuminating covering several areas that might not always be obvious. The giveaways of thermometers and pottles by Waipu Vet Centre and the accompanying demonstration of how to use correctly provided considerable amusement. The problem rural women often face is isolation and getting organised for a night out may appear more daunting than the allure of not having to cook.

Farming Lifestyles

This is more than likely because we ensure that the meals for the family are cooked and that everyone is happy and sorted before we leave. But don’t underestimate the value of the time away from the ‘coal face’. Many problems appear to be lessened by simply sharing them with a group of women in similar situations and the knowledge that may be gained is well worth joining in these invaluable networks. Irrigation and Broadband Crucial for our Farming Future

by Kate Wilkinson, Minister for Food Safety Water is our most valuable natural resource. It gives us a competitive advantage over other farming nations, and plays a big part in enticing tourists to our shores and sustaining our recreation. It’s a fact of life that the question of freshwater management brings with it competing interests.

We need to make the most of the economic opportunities that water provides, while protecting our environment. I’ve heard plenty of absurd rhetoric since becoming a minister. There is a narrative currently being promoted by Labour that farmers aren’t paying their way in this country and need to be taxed more. The notion of higher taxes isn’t particularly surprising but the attack on farmers is, especially considering if we’re to see an exportled recovery then it’s probably not a good idea to try and destroy our biggest export sector. We’re a nation that is built around our primary industries. We’re good at it and we continue to get better. It’s a matter of actively working at how we can improve and increase our productivity in a way that is sustainable. This will lead to a stronger economy and higher paying jobs. It’s a long term objective and this Government is willing to invest in it. It’s impossible to manage natural resources in a way that will please everyone and water is no exception. But we can be smarter about it and set a clear direction for the future. Water quality is deteriorating in parts of the country and this is going to be addressed in our Fresh Water Package. It includes a National Policy Statement on fresh water management,

significant investment for irrigation projects, and more money to clean up New Zealand’s rivers, lakes, and aquifers. It’s important that we put a plan in place so we can achieve effective change, and I know farmers have taken a close interest in our proposals. Increased irrigation will help build a stronger economy and provide more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders, which is why the Budget allocates $35 million over five years to help irrigation projects get underway. Then there’s an additional $400 million of equity from 2013/14 in the construction of regional-scale irrigation projects, showing just how serious the Government is about improving irrigation. These initiatives represent a major step in unlocking water’s economic potential. NZIER research suggests the fund could support 340,000ha of new irrigation, which could boost exports by $1.4 billion a year by 2018, rising to $4 billion a year by 2026. It’s a good package that the whole country can support. In a similar vein, the confirmation that work will soon start on bringing ultra-fast broadband to Canterbury is a huge boost for our region. The first receivers will be businesses, schools and medical facilities. This is great news for the education of our children and the growth of our local companies. Our schools will be able to share resources such as physics and IT teachers. Elsewhere, university and polytechnic students will be

Businesses will be better connected to their markets both in New Zealand and around the globe. At the same time, professionals such as accountants, lawyers, and advisors will be able to offer their services to national and international clients. The $1.5 billion investment in ultra-fast broadband is complemented by the Rural Broadband Initiative, which is rolling out much faster broadband to our rural communities. We’re spending money where it’s needed and we’ll continue to work hard to set our nation on a more productive and stronger economical track.

Are you annoyed about the KiwiSaver cuts? You’re not alone. There are a lot of annoyed people out there, thinking the Government has done an about-face on KiwiSaver, depriving them of a decent retirement by cutting the member tax credits in half, removing tax breaks, and making savers put in more of their own money. That’s not what you signed up for, is it?

We hear you — But we want to ask you three questions. t What retirement plan, other than KiwiSaver, comes with $1,000 from the Government just for joining? t What retirement plan, other than KiwiSaver, comes with $521 a year from the Government, just for saving $20 a week? t What other retirement plan is your employer required to contribute 2% and soon to be 3%? DON’T LOSE THE FARM BECAUSE OF YOUR KID’S EX! David and Bev* owned a farming property. Their son Jim* worked the farm for them, and lived on site with his partner Shirl*. As David and Bev got older, they decided to form a partnership with Jim. Land, stock and plant became partnership assets. Shirl, although not a business partner, did all the housework for Jim as well as some for David and Bev. She also helped with farm work. A few years later Jim and Shirl broke up. After a round of (costly) negotiations, Shirl claimed in Court for half of Jim’s share of the partnership. The Court decided that she was entitled to half his property (¼ of the total partnership assets). The only way Jim could pay her out was to get his parents to agree to sell the farm.

Believe it or not these situations are common for a number of rural families. This could have been avoided had David and Bev insisted that Jim and Shirl enter into a relationship property agreement. Profitable Land Use

by Bob Cathcart

Land Management Specialist, Northland Regional Council

Farmers ruthlessly cull animals that are not pulling their weight as the feed they consume can be put to better, more productive use — so why not employ the same strategy for unproductive land? Land in Northland can be very variable with more than 230 different soil types — the average farm can have five or more distinct soil types. The history of how the land has been managed, whether or not it has suffered erosion, and whether it is infested with weeds all affect its productivity. Just as some animals produce more from each kilogram of feed they consume, so too does some land produce more grass from the same inputs of fertiliser, fencing, herbicide and plain hard work. We all know and accept that some land is more productive, but at what stage do we start ‘culling’ land from our grazing system? Careful mapping of the different classes of farm land, monitoring of how much grass each grows and how many stock units are carried will enable the land to be ranked according to productivity — resources in versus produce out.

The Beef and Lamb New Zealand Monitor Farm programme has done just this exercise on one Northland farm. Data collected with monitoring methods already used by many farmers has supported a case for some long-term changes to the whole farming system. An area of steep, hard and unstable hill country which produces very little grass, has lime and fertiliser applied by air and gorse sprayed every few years, just does not measure up. It is costing more to keep this area in grass than it is producing — it is not paying its way so it needs to be ‘culled’ from grazing. Investing in more productive parts of the farm makes far more economic sense. For example, reticulating good quality water to troughs in the remaining paddocks will enable more stock to be finished on the easier country, and give a much greater return than the fertiliser, lime and gorse spray that’s wasted on the steep block. If not pastoral farming then, what alternative uses should be considered for culled land? Tougher land throughout Northland has reverted back to scrub and eventually to bush. That is one, low cost, option. The Northland region has the third largest area of exotic plantation forestry, mainly radiata pine, of any region in New Zealand. These forests have been established to stabilise erosion-prone hill country and sand dunes, to control the spread of gorse, and as an alternative to pastoral farming on marginal hill country. In those parts of the region within economic haul distance of wood-processing plants, a rail head or the port, plantation forestry to produce wood is a definite option. The newest reason for converting marginal farmland to forest is to earn carbon credits. When the carrying capacity of farmland

drops below a certain number of stock units per hectare — currently about six — and depending on the going price per tonne of carbon, growing trees becomes more profitable. Like it or not, agriculture will become part of the emissions trading scheme over the next two or three years and farmers will need to offset their own carbon footprint. Northland landowners stand to gain from this new economy because most will have or will be able to access land on which they can grow trees, either exotic or indigenous species — so take stock of land and identify areas that are not pulling their weight now.

Black Beetle, Grass Grub, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all

vi s R En nes si Bu

As my old tutor used to ram into my hhead, “Plant predators and disease are symptoms of a failing fa crop, not the cause”. It is natural to be healthy, not natural to be sick. We are brainwashed into believing that headaches are a lack of aspirin. We apply chemicals to fight predatory pred and weed problems which is as foolish as applying makeu makeup to cover up pimples. It is about as foolish as smacking yourse yourself over the head with a sledge hammer so that you don’t feel your toothache any more. Don’t blame the black beetle. Like all predators, they are opportunists. They attack when the opportunity is right. If the predator was at fault the whole system would have imploded when the very first one raised its head. They were put there to weed out the weak so that only the fit will survive. You never see the wolves in North America take on the big Bull Moose, they seek out the weak. The Lions in Africa take out the stragglers from the herd of wildebeest they just feed on the injured or sick; this is natures check and balance, it is how nature evolved. The soil is the plants rumen, end of story. Feed the plant via soil fertility and you will have a plant that can defend itself. Here in this country most of what we grow evolved from another hemisphere and in another environment. Therefore, in our acidic soils they will

always have difficulty manufacturing their full set of defences in the form of complete proteins unless we duplicate as near as possible those conditions it evolved in. When we put a man on the moon, he had to take his environment with him. The plant can’t do the same, so we must do it for him. When the plant cannot produce complete proteins they accumulate amide nitrogen compounds, crude sugars and incomplete bio-chemical products. These trigger in the predator, be that black beetle or whatever, that this plant is dying and it is just the place to lay its eggs. This cycle of events is termed the Calvin Cycle and is the cycle that converts crude sugars into starches. From starches the plant produces lignin, from lignin cellulose from cellulose to proteins, from proteins to fats, from fats oils and from oils alcohol is produced; on and on up the food chain. The higher up the food chain the harder it is to break down, that’s why you get pinged for drinking too much alcohol and never for too much pop. The lynch pin in the whole process is the atom of manganese. This is the element that splits the water molecule and kick starts off the whole cycle. When manganese is in short supply the cycle slows down; when this occurs sugars accumulate and become an invitation for predation. In nature there is always a cause and effect, don’t fight the predator, take the stress out of the host.

In the 21st century, as the world struggles to feed itself, the time-honoured methods of stock breeding come constantly under the moral and technological microscope The New Zealand stock breeding industry is an acknowledged world leader, and progeny from our beef and sheep herds and the equine industry now span the globe. Artificial insemination has been developed here to a high degree and is now just ‘part of the scene’ on our farms, while making our own particular impact on the international platform. But research continues and on the scientific front, foremost in the minds of researchers as well as agricultural observers around the world is the vexed question of cloning as well as genetic modification in horticulture. Here, the Food Safety Authority, the NZFSA, administers food-related legislation and provides independent policy advice on food and related issues.

Breeders’ Digest It has taken a close look at animal cloning — perhaps the next great step in animal husbandry. The latest cloning technique is called Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer. It involves removing the nucleus from an egg or oocyte (recipient) and replacing it with the nucleus of a cell from the animal to be cloned (donor). The donor is usually an animal with desirable traits and, following successful transfer, the cell develops into an embryo which is implanted into a surrogate mother for rearing. The animal born from that embryo will have virtually identical DNA and therefore desirable traits, as the donor animal. Researchers in New Zealand and around the world have shown the promise of animal cloning in preserving and propagating important animal lines, from elite sires through to endangered species. New Zealand scientists are considered world leaders in many aspects of animal cloning research. In farming, animals vary widely in their genetic merit and commercial value. To rapidly multiply animals selected for valuable traits such as milk production, meat quality and healthiness, reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination (AI), embryo transfer and in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) are already used worldwide. Animal cloning is also a reproductive technology, but unlike artificial insemination, IVF and embryo transfer, cloning allows the direct copying of animals with high genetic or resale value, with less unpredictability than other breeding techniques. The advantage of cloning is that the sex, genetic traits and therefore likely commercial value of the animal are known before birth. But cloning of livestock animals is still very much at the experimental stage and is restricted to very small numbers of elite breeding stock. AgResearch is the pre-eminent animal cloning research institute in New Zealand and has a voluntary moratorium preventing cloned animals they own from entering the food chain. In any event cloning an animal is very expensive and not commercially viable at the present time. Cloned animals are more likely to be used as breeding stock to pass on valuable traits to their offspring, in much the same way artificial insemination and IVF is used. The lobbies for and against cloning have one bottom line concern, and that is safety for consumption. If cloned animals were to be used as food, the safety of products from them would be compared with the safety of products from conventionally bred animals. NZFSA has been looking at this issue for several years and has found no safety reasons to reject food from cloned animals. This position is supported by risk assessments published by the US Food and

If the Hat Fits, Wear it by Bill Guest While visiting the National Fieldays, I was surprised to see reported in the local papers that ANZ rural economist, Con Williams, was suggesting that New Zealand farmers were lacking in the skills to manage the farm budget, that they needed to be upskilled because of their average age, and the skill sets available, and indeed that often their wives were doing the books less than professionally. I take umbrage at this. Mystery Creek is in the heart of the Waikato where annual rural production in the province was five per cent ahead of last year, a figure that is also reflected in Northland, despite the drought we experienced before Christmas. Mr Williams suggested farmers need to be more actively involved in managing costs and there were not enough of us doing that because of age and the lack of skills in place. He suggested that sometimes the farmer’s wife is doing the books and not discussing what the farmer is spending and it comes back to educational skills and discipline. Well, in fact there has been a decline of $900 million in overall farm debt since September 2010 — down to $46.3 billion. This has been due to pressure from banks, including forced sales but also natural

reduction of debt by farmers because of good commodity prices. We have heard the Labour Party suggest that farmers are having a golden age and don’t pay enough tax. To me that is a clear indication that urban New Zealand is not going to let six per cent of the population — the farming community — contribute 85 per cent of the country’s wealth and go unscathed. We have banks and consultants using farming as the new feeding ground to keep them going. Farming is the trough everyone wants to feed out of. It is clear that banks have actually been the perpetrators who have been responsible for creating that $46 billion debt through 100 per cent loans and other clearly irresponsible lending in the last few years. Any implication that farmers, because of their age, and the wives doing the books, don’t have the skills to run the business, is absolutely ridiculous. These are the same banks who have received government guarantees and bailouts to keep them afloat. Many of these banks were involved with the 35 to 40 finance companies that have crashed over the last two years. My issue is that the overwhelming majority of farmers have good business skills and the good judgement to invest millions of dollars into the dairying industry — and that

Bill Guest, National Operations Director, Farmers of NZ

is what has kept this country afloat. These farmers are also directors of Fonterra — an unparalleled business success. As to the issue of their wives, many of them have kept farms afloat during hard times using their business acumen, and when necessary, going off the farm to work in former jobs and professions to keep the farm afloat. 90 per cent of farmers wives control the cheque book as well. They know the reality of work on the farm and the economic facts of life all too well. In terms of business skills and acumen, and an appreciation of realities, I rather think consultants, economists, banks and the rest of the ‘advisory community’ should be looking inwards, and not outwards.
