The Albertland settlers arrived in the Kaipara from 1862 onwards in a series of ships sailing from England. They settled a total of 70,000 acres of land around the Northern Kaipara, including Port Albert, Pahi, Paparoa, Whakapirau and Maungaturoto. Each adult received 100 acres of land with an addition of 20 acres for each child from the colonial government of the time, and many of their descendents still farm the original grants to this day.

At 2pm on Saturday there will be a parade from Old School Lane to the Paparoa Showgrounds with over 30 floats participating including Battensby’s bullock team, brass and pipe bands, hunt horses, vintage cars and machinery as well as many dressed in period costumes.

Highlights of the celebrations include the world premiere of Allen Adair on Thursday, October 18 at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre. Directed by Peter Flower from Matakohe, the adaptation of the novel written by Jane Mander is set around the Kauri gum-digging industry in the late 1800s.

On the Saturday morning there will be a re-enactment of the settlers arriving at Pahi complete with a powhiri.

William Harold Marsh, farmer, father, early Albertlander and adventurous photographer captured a time of enchantment, when life was lived at a slower pace and governed by a different set of values, priorities and ambitions.

But there is an upside — possum fur is in demand as an alternative to inhumanely farmed fur products.

Trapping the troublesome creatures and harvesting their pelts can prove to be lucrative indeed, which is why it’s great news that the Northland Regional Council, in association with Enviroschools Northland and the Department of Conservation, have introduced ‘project possum’ to the North.

The project is a simple one — teach young people to trap possums, give them hands-on knowledge of the industry, and grow the trade for the future, culling possum numbers and maximising profits. Students can even earn level 2 and 3 NCEA credits for taking part in what is a win-win proposal for everyone but the possums themselves.

Now the plan is being taken even further, with a second phase accepting 21 students for advanced poisons training. This is an alternative to the

controversial 1080 poison airdrops which have polarised the rural community across the nation — students will instead learn to use targeted poisons as they work toward their CSL or controlled substances licence.

It’s a demanding course, handling substances like cyanide safely and making certain that possums and only possums succumb to the deadly bait.

Trefoil park, an eighty hectare facility just south of Kaikohe is the training ground for these 21 hopefuls, including councillor Joe Carr who is renewing his CSL. Graduates of the course will have the ammunition to cull possums in large numbers — not just for their pelts, but also to help protect our native ecosystem. And this on the ground approach using targeted controlled poisons obviates the need for the socially divisive and allegedly more harmful aerial drop method.

he changing face of the district’s farming and land based industries is represented. The iron whim outside the village blacksmith’s is a reminder of the North’s early pioneering days. It is similar to a windlass and has a vertical axle. The top wheel is connected to others within the mechanism. The whim could drive other wheels at a distance from it. A bar connected the mechanism to horse or oxen and within the kauri industry it could haul huge weights.

Another early device is the Hay Grab, made by a local blacksmith and used up until the 1930s. It would have been attached to a long swinging arm and worked by a system of ropes to collect the thrashed hay and throw it up onto the stack. This Cambridge invention went out to the world. Nearby under the Tung trees (Tung oil itself being a part of Northland’s history) is the 1930s solid wheeled Fordson industrial tractor used in factories such as a cement works where it would have pulled wagons.

The vehicle shed holds a range of vehicles including a Massey Ford tractor off a local farm. Only around 500 were ever made during the short lived partnership of William Massey and Henry Ford in the 1930s. Surprisingly the tractor’s motor

Adding its redoubtable presence is a steam driven Marshall Traction Engine, used in the Taheke kauri lands where it was dragged from the bush in the 1870s. Alongside it is an early asphalt spreader used by the Napier City Council. Across from these workhorses is the 1950 Water Buffalo, one of only four remaining in the world. The Scottish company Cuthbertson incorporated ideas from war time tank manufacture to develop a machine which could drain swamps in rough terrain.

It was used in Scotland and extensively in the Waikato and at Taheke. It carried a 10 tonne payload and its plough had a six feet drag. This machine worked up until 1976.

All of these intriguing and often rare items are but few of a vast and valuable historical collection.

Matt took over the farm from his father in 2008. Matt and wife Sarah are also the co-owners of Mid North Honda in nearby Waipapa. The busy King family manages to run both the farm and their farm vehicle business.

The feral goat population (around 450 animals) was threatening the long term viability of the property before Matt decided to make them generate profit for the operation. The Kings raise around 120 calves in the season and graze around 150 pure bred Angus breeding cows. The 700 acre property is clean and largely free of ragwort, blackberry, and thistle. “The only thing we need to spray a bit is gorse,” says Matt. The

At the annual spring goat muster Matt calls on Peter and Claire Thomson who farm at neighbouring Horeke. The goats are in good condition. Many are white with a curly angora type fleece while others show Boer characteristics and are lightly tanned with longer ears. The coloureds are drafted out, although the smaller

animals are kept back as well as the strongest nannies to breed from. Matt says that while the Boer strain in the crossbreds gives meatiness he has found in the Waihou that the breed does better on softer country.

He agrees that demand for goat meat is increasing. Nationally, since the 1980s, overall the price for goat meat has been rising to around $3.50/kg.

The goats have grown more used to Matt and he can now come much closer to them out on the farm. “I love them.

The name of this establishment — naturally — is Felixstowe Lodge.

Jasmine went from strength to strength with her riding skills, competing in show jumping and avidly participating in equestrian life. When an unfortunate accident forced her into two years of recuperation, her love for the sport saw her through, leading to many hours of research and planning.

What was to come from this forced period of introspection and learning was the seed of an idea — to improve the bloodlines of Kiwi Warmblood horses, with an eye to nothing less than Olympic victory. Warmblood horses are a special breed quite separate from racing Thoroughbreds, and are the breed of choice for show jumping, as well as being a popular choice for eventing.

“We’ve definitely got the talent in this country — we just need the horses,” says Jasmine, speaking from the fields of Felixstowe Lodge. “Personally, I’d love to be overseas competing on one of my stallions, at events like Spruce Meadows, the World Equestrian Games or the Olympics.”

She has already begun a carefully researched breeding programme by importing two stallions from Australia with top European bloodlines in their ancestry. The first Felixstowe foal was

Some of her horses are stars in their own right. Three of Felixstowe Lodge’s four Warmblood stallions were recently showcased at the All Breed Stallion Parade at Cambridge, and interest is building in the progeny of the bloodlines Jasmine has brought together.

Most chronic diseases have an inflammatory component.

In some cases inflammation is the cause of the problem and in others it is part of the problem. For example, autoimmune arthritis is caused by the immune system starting to attack joint tissues. With the more common rheumatoid arthritis the attack is against the membranes that contain synovial fluid. The body then tries to remedy the autoimmune attack by initiating an inflammatory response. Unfortunately, the problem is one that cannot be repaired and this leads to a permanent state of elevated inflammation. This prolonged inflammatory attack then causes cocktails of oxygen and nitrogen free radicals and the combination of these, plus destructive inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins and cytokines cause joint tissue destruction. The outcome is a progressive loss of joint function with pain, stiffness, swelling and disfiguration.

Nutritional therapy to lower inflammation is usually very complementary alongside medical treatment. When I create anti-inflammatory programmes I target food compounds that can lower cytokine levels and generally reduce immune system generated inflammation. Many of these are also potent antioxidants which appear to directly lower cytokine levels and additionally mop up the excess free radicals these produce.

On an August summer drive from Somerset through to Devon in the south-west, the hills rolled away with only the very occasional glimpse of grazing animals to be seen.

My host commented that ever since mad cow disease and foot and mouth outbreaks, the English countryside has been a little bare of four-footed inhabitants.

But in conversations in a couple of rural pubs, where they have been contemplating farming over their ale for centuries, it emerged that it's an economic foe our UK counterparts are facing.

For many people living in rural areas, issues concerning rights of way are a constant cause of frustration. Questions concerning who can use the right of way, blocking the right of way, and maintenance are all problems which tend to repeat themselves time and again.

In the next few editions of this paper I will examine some of these topics. The focus of this article is perhaps the most important: who is able to use the right of way? Because there are serious obligations in terms of maintenance for excessive use, and considerable repercussions if you deny a person legitimate access, it’s essential that you understand who can use the road.

At the most basic level, a right of way can be used by a person who is authorised to do so. Simple enough, but what does that actually mean?

The starting point is always to check the documents used to create the right of way.

This is because although there are various rights and obligations owed and owing by each party at law, these can be varied if the parties’ wish.

If those documents do not limit access the person granted the use of the right of way is able to go over the right of way, with or without vehicles, machinery, implements, and domestic animals. If the land is rural, he or she will be able to travel with livestock.

farmers will find all manner of small design tweaks throughout, putting the smaller A in line with the more powerful Valtra N and T series. Versatility is the key, allowing the A series to fulfil more roles around the farm, connect with more machinery, and thus increase the owner’s bottom line.

An example of this innovative thinking is the automatic handbrake system fitted to the A series. When the tractor is in park, the handbrake is engaged every time — making the A series safer to use and safer to service.

“Almost everyone has driven their tractor with the handbrake on by mistake, causing it to burn out,” says Mr Keenan. “Making it operate automatically is a great service feature, and it simplifies using the A series day to day.” The PTO lever has been replaced for similar reasons, and now takes

the form of a button on the tractor’s main console.

Dairying Treating Calf scours! Rotagen and Vetsan the combined approach this spring!

Calf scours may be all bad, but there’s a good option at hand for clients who end up battling with sick animals this spring The Rotagen Combo range remains unique as non-toxic, non-withhold vet only antibody treatment for calves affected by common pathogens like Rotavirus 6 and 10, Coronavirus, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and or E.coli (K99).

New Zealand is the only country in the world where specific antibodies against specific pathogens — (Rotagen Combo) — is a registered animal remedy.

The Rotagen Combo range is based on Globigen, a spray-dried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s specific to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10, coronavirus, salmonella, cryptosporidium, and E.coli (K99).

Globigen is made by vaccinating high health status flocks against a specific pathogen. The hen then passes maternal immunoglobulins from serum to the egg yolk which is collected, then spray-dried, heat-treated and standardized to a determined IgY titre. This is then formulated into a Rotagen combination product by Vetpak here in NZ. Any Rotagen combination of the above IgY’s can be produced on request to meet a specific challenge.

through the gastro -intestinal tract in an active form and are not altered by the digestive process. Their ability to bind to antigens is maintained within the local gut.

As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period.

The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. It can be used to both prevent and treat specific calf scours.

A recent addition to the range is Rotagen Crypto, a cryptosporidium specific treatment for calves.

Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This is particularly useful in cases where the herd has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves.

Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for five days.

For treatment, dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the first day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days.

Treating the calves with Rotagen is one part of the equation, reducing the effects of environmental contamination is also important in reducing the effects of an outbreak within your calves, this is where another Vetpak product Vetsan can help, Vetsan is a santiser and disinfectant that is effective against all major organisms including Rotavirus, Coronavirus, E Coli, Salmonella Sp and Cryptospordium. One of the major benefits of Vetsan is that it is a very safe product which can be sprayed around and over your calves without any affects to them and it is also non toxic to humans. Vetsan comes in two forms, one is a ready to use product and the other is a concentrate mixed at a 1to 4 ratio, Vetsan should be used with a fine nozzle or mist sprayer or it is suitable for use with a fogger.

A litre of Vetsan will cover 36m2 compared to many products on the market only covering 3m2 per litre of product and Vetsan also has residual activity over 7-14 days meaning the product keeps working longer.

uhoi Valley Cheese Company was started back in 1981 by dairy goat farmer Lloyd Darrach. A couple of years later the first factory was set up, with the help of French cheese-maker Marie Grandjonc.

That factory, which celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, has grown enormously. Hi-tech ultra-filtration equipment was installed and cow’s milk introduced.

But the company itself has long since passed out of the hands of its goat farmer founder. In 2000 it was bought by NZ Dairy, which was subsequently merged with Goodman Fielder in 2005.

David Pride is Puhoi Valley’s Production Manager. He takes me for a guided tour of the busy plant where, nine years ago, he started work on the factory floor.

These days the company has far outgrown the ability of local farmers to supply its milk, which is now provided

by Fonterra from farms throughout north Auckland and Northland.

The factory may be highly mechanised, but there are still key tasks such as stirring vast vats of curds by hand and constant cleaning. One of the company’s most popular products is feta. If you’ve ever wondered how it gets its unique salty taste, the answer is simple. It’s soaked in a deep bath of brine before being put into a cool store.

What looks like pale scrambled eggs is dropped into round moulds to become the French-style soft cheeses such as brie and camembert. These take on the distinct white mould exterior as they sit for several days maturing in cool stores.

David Pride says the process of educating the palates of New Zealanders to these European styles is an on-going one. It’s also about teaching chefs how to cook with such strong flavours and how to store the cheeses correctly.

“It’s not just about shoving it to the back of the fridge,” he says. “Cheese is alive. It’s alive here in the factory and will continue to be alive on the shelf, so it needs to be treated properly.”

But, David says proudly, even the fussiest connoisseurs can be won over. He describes how the French rugby team was served some of the Kaipara Washed Rind at a function last year, and they couldn’t believe it was a locally produced cheese.

The product range has been extended over the years, but the core focus is still white mould, feta and blue, the latter produced in a separate part of the factory adjacent to the café and visible to the public.

There can be several causes of mastitis from environmental to mechanical. Consulting with your animal health professional (local vet) should be first on your list, at the same time ruling out your milking plant. Here are a few tips that may help you find some of the basic issues preventing your machine working at it’s peak: Weekly Checklist: 1. Check your milking liners — how old are they? Are there any split or twisted ones? Liners should be replaced at least every 2500 milkings.

2. Check all your pulse tubes on the milking claw — are there any cracked or split ones?

3. Check your claw bowl seals — are they cracked or split?

4. Check your claw bowls for cracks.

10. Get your milking plant serviced annually or every 1500 hours.

The smallest crack or split can cause problems and any of parts showing signs of wear should be replaced immediately.

Opening a wound would expose it to bacteria which will increase the risk of infection, especially in wet conditions.

But, even though an exposed corium is running the risk of getting infected, not opening a wound would increase that risk. A lame hoof that has a hole needs to be treated.

The principle is that the corium needs to be exposed and the weight taken off the damaged claw. That is the key of good hoof trimming.

If the wound is not opened up properly, it doesn’t mean that the bacteria are not at the corium. If anything, the bacteria are trapped in the wound and are more likely to go through the corium creating an infection.

Opening it up and letting the air get to it will take a lot of the infection pressure away and the wound can heal up a lot quicker. Using a bandage is not advisable as often the bandage is not

taken off on time. When you eventually do take the bandage off you can smell a rotten smell. That smell should be enough of an indication that it is not helpful to use a bandage.

However, letting the air get to the wound is not enough. The weight needs to be taken off the wound. This sounds very logical yet very few people actually do it with trimming. Most people refer to a claw block. There is nothing wrong with using claw blocks and in many cases using a block is crucial to the healing of the cow, but if the claw is not trimmed properly it can still negatively affect the cow. It does happen sometimes that claw blocks come off prematurely. If the claw is not trimmed properly the wounded claw is going to carry too much weight again.

The principle is the same as putting a claw block on the healthy claw, but, instead of making the healthy claw higher, you need to make the lame claw lower. You can do this by lowering the sole of the damaged claw on the 2/3 area from the heel side.

Lowering this area can sometimes create as much height difference as using a block.

Another advantage is that it is easier to see if the under-run has been eliminated properly and it is much less likely for a hard ridge in the hoof to pinch the wound.

Dealing with pests

Win the battle for greener pastures With spring well and truly here, farmers are turning their attention to raising a bountiful crop of grass to fuel milk production. It’s all about maximizing that all-important DM or dry mass (pasture minus water) – the crucial tonnage of feed which keeps the herd healthy and productive.

But green pastures have many enemies, and this time of year it’s time to take the offensive to these pests, guaranteeing good pasture growth.

Pests take two major forms – insects and weeds. Weeds can be insidious – many were in fact introduced species, and still flourish in country gardens, spreading their seeds via wind and birds to ruin paddocks.

Knowing how weeds such as gorse, thistle and ragwort spread is key to eliminating these plant pests from your pastures. As well as being windblown or carried by water, the seeds of noxious plants can also sometimes be found amongst benign grass seed – check the certification of any seed you’re planting to make sure it’s weed free. Another vector, pertinent this time of year is the very machinery used to destroy weeds. The tractors, harrows and rollers visiting your land may be carrying weed seeds in like the old ‘trojan horse’.

Sometimes it’s possible to let nature take prevention one step further, by using biological control methods. This means introducing a new plant, insect or other living thing into the environment specifically to target a pest. While this approach can initially cost more than sprays and seems slow to get started, the long-term results of biological control are economically very viable, and of course it’s the ‘green’ option too.

The best modern method of dealing with weeds once they rear their heads is with agri-spray chemicals – though still better is prevention. A healthy pasture carpeted in long, lush grass is its own protection in many ways, blocking weeds from even germinating or growing past a tiny sprout.

To stop weeds, take care of the land from the ground up. Cultivate with deep tines and harrows to aerate the soil, then seed a certified weed-free, hardy form of grass appropriate to the moisture content and drainage of your pasture. Pugged paddocks won’t grow the best crop, so the roller may come into play as well, before nitrogen is spread for maximum soil fertility. Regular grazing throughout the season and the year helps too – your herd can do their part by nipping some of those shoots literally in the bud, and by preventing overgrowth.

Insect pests, such as weevils (these attack clover, and as such are high on the hit-list), grass grubs, army worms and

the like are also best managed by taking care of the pasture from a ‘grass roots’ level. Chemicals can be effectively used to quash infestations, but even better is the more natural approach as practiced since the middle ages. Consider planting a ‘break crop’, especially in summer.

Valuable dry mass for feed can be gained from, for example, a turnip crop in summer, breaking the pest’s life cycle by depriving it of its favourite food - and as a bonus, alternative cropping and rotation of the paddock has been proven to help reduce pugging damage and fix soil nutrients.

Nutrient availability The chart, (which can be found in soil science text books), shows that optimum plant nutrient availability is achieved between pH 6.0 and 6.5.You can see that Potassium is only about 30% available at pH 5.0 however it is 100% available by 6.1. Perhaps the most dramatic example of nutrient availability is Phosphorus which is approximately 25% available at pH 5.5 but is 100% available at 6.5. The implications for farmers applying a Phosphate fertiliser when soil pH is below 6.0, is that approximately 75% of the applied plant available Phosphate is locked-up within a few days.

The good news is that raising pH releases previously locked up nutrients.Although seldom discussed, Aluminium is perhaps the most interesting of all. Are you aware that available aluminium is highly toxic to plant roots? Raising soil pH above 6.0, locks up Aluminium resulting in dramatic increases in pasture root depths. This increases pasture production and drought resistance.

Stimulating soil biological activity — how and why?

Part 3 — The Role of Nutrients Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

In Part 1 of this three-part series of articles, we looked at how organic matter levels have built up under agriculture, and asked the question ‘Are there benefits in getting this organic matter to turn over or cycle more rapidly?’

The answer to this was assumed to be yes, because the best producing paddocks on a farm always seem to have the most active soil biology.

In Part 2, we looked at the main types of soil microbes, their abundance and what their roles were, and what makes life difficult for them. We concluded that since microbes, unlike larger organisms like earthworms, are so easily distributed by weather, animals and machinery, simply applying cultures of microbes is unlikely to be much help. We concluded that having good soil conditions — good aeration and drainage particularly — is a key factor.

In this final part in the series, we look at how nutrient efficiency can help optimise the entire soil-plant system, and with it, production.

Even with the best soil aeration and drainage, soil biological activity and plant growth will not reach full potential if one or more nutrients are limiting. But to simply throw more fertiliser on to try to ensure that nothing is limiting is both expensive and harmful to the environment, particularly to water quality and emissions of greenhouse gases. Moreover, excess quantities of

nutrients can induce toxicities in plants and animals, and can suppress uptake and utilisation of other nutrients.

So it is becoming ever more important to find the most efficient forms of individual nutrients, and the most efficient ways of applying them. This is particularly so given the massive intensification of dairy farming that has been taking place in New Zealand in the past 15 years. While this has had enormous economic benefit for New Zealand, we have to be fully aware of the potential adverse impact on the environment. As we run out of suitable land to convert to dairy farming, we have been increasing production on the land we have by using more nitrogen fertiliser, and by importing rapidly increasing amounts of feed, especially PKE (palm kernel extract).

This enables more stock to be carried per hectare, but increases the risk of soil drainage, aeration and nutrient run-off problems. Feeding out on pads or in cow homes helps avoid these problems, but is capital intensive, and is ultimately limited by how much effluent loading the land can cope with before soil microbial activity and water quality are affected too severely. Once we start to damage the level of microbial activity in the soil, we become dependent on increasing amounts of fertiliser just to maintain existing production levels.

Sooner or later, region by region, catchment by catchment, limits on fertiliser use and brought-in feed will be (and in some catchments already have been) set.

Once these limits are in place, further increases in production can only come from improved plant and animal genetics, better soil management, and increased nutrient

efficiency. The longer it takes the dairy industry to demonstrate that it understands the significance of what is happening and start planning for the future, the harsher will be the limitations that will eventually be imposed on their farmers’ suppliers.

It has already been scientifically proven that the efficiency of urea — by far the major source of fertiliser N in New Zealand — can be literally doubled by applying it either as a thick fluid or more dilute liquid incorporating urease inhibitor. In other words, less than half the amount of N is required to achieve a certain increase in production. There is no magic to this. By applying urea in this form, foliar uptake is optimised, as is the root uptake of the coarser particles that reach the soil. N that was lost to the environment either as leached nitrate or gaseous losses of nitrous oxide greenhouse gas, are minimised.

The nutrient cycle is tightened, as it is in nature.

Most of the other major nutrients provide some, but less spectacular, increases in efficiency when applied in this way. The efficiency of many trace elements can be tenfold or more higher when applied in this way compared to solid form.

The major impediment to the wider adoption of fluid application has been the higher cost of application per unit of nutrient. However, recent advances in both ground and aerial application of fluids has greatly reduced the cost premium compared to solids. This, combined with the reductions in nutrient requirements, means total costs are already lower in many situations.

New evidence helps stamp out pugging Cattle are no lightweights, and when conditions are damp it's inevitable that their hooves are going to cause damage to the foundations of good pasture — the effect known as pugging. It's been a problem for as long as people have cultivated livestock, but with more intensive farming practises and increased herd sizes, it's an issue which needs more attention than ever It's not just an aesthetic consideration, either — pugging doesn't just reduce drainage, leading to more runoff, it also harms the soil in other ways. Pugged soil is less aerated, meaning that soil temperatures remain low, and anerobic conditions can develop down at the root level, robbing grass of the good microbes and the oxygen it needs to flourish. Ryegrass is especially impacted by pugging — the 'tillers' which are the roots of ryegrass are delicate, and pugged pasture supports less than 45% of ground cover compared to healthy pasture.

Yield can be cut from between 20 to 80 percent by pugging, and the effects can last over half a year, seriously impacting the growth of all important dry mass and thus impacting your bottom line. Obviously, doing nothing about pugging isn't even an option — but research conducted in New Zealand by the Taranaki Agricultural

Research Station has produced some interesting facts.

The usual method for tackling pugging has involved the farmer's old friend, the harrow and roller combination. Levelling the paddock and providing aeration by deep-tine harrowing has an immediate effect, reducing runoff and breaking up the harmful anerobic conditions caused by deep compaction. But alone, these methods aren't enough.

Studies have proven that following up the harrow and roller with broadcasting of ryegrass seed is the most effective method of rebuilding a healthy paddock — 16%

Doug Hanley has spent more than 6000 hours ‘playing’ with the kind of big boy’s toys most kids can only dream about.

on Understanding soil pH and balanced soil nutrition

The concept behind ‘soil fertility management’ is to establish a balanced system between all the soil elements, a system that contains the right amount of soil nutrients in the correct proportions to support healthy plant and animal life specific to individual needs A soil-balancing programme is built on the understanding that each time we add an element that is deficient, it will reduce any other element that is excessive in that soil. In other words, if we have too little of one nutrient in the soil, we will have too much of something else.

A key Albrecht principle is that once all the nutrients required are properly supplied, the pH will be right (Figure 1). Ideal amounts of nutrients as measured by base saturation percentages for light sand to heavy clay soils are: Calcium (Ca) 60 to 70%; Magnesium (Mg) 10 to 20%; Potassium (K) 2 to 5%; Sodium (Na) 0.5 to 3%; exchangeable hydrogen 10 to 15%; and other bases 2-4%. The ideal is for Ca and Mg to total 80% combined.

The diagrams (right) show that two soils can have a good pH but have very different levels of nutrients.

The Albrecht system of soil fertility also says that a good pH does not always guarantee a balanced soil (Figure 2). Soil pH is affected and influenced not just by Calcium (Ca) but by all the four major cations (positively charged ions):

Ca, Mg, K, and Na. In some instances, kilogram for kilogram Mg can actually raise pH up to 1.67 times higher than Ca. A soil high in Mg and low in Ca can test pH above 6.5 but actually still require additional Ca to grow plants properly.

Extremely high Na can also cause an extremely high pH. K can also influence pH even more so than Ca and Mg. It is subsequently very important to know the correct amount of each cation by proper soil testing before an appropriate lime and fertiliser programme can be designed.

achieved and the right environments for biological activities exist.

When the pH (balanced cations) is correct, other nutrients including phosphorus, sulphur, nitrogen and trace elements will be at their most available and be most efficiently utilised by the plant. The more the soil chemistry, physics and biology are correctly influenced, the plant or crop will be able to acquire all the essential nutrients in proper amounts. This is why the Albrecht system emphasises ‘feed the soil and let the soil feed the plants’.

Higher populations deliver higher maize yields Research has shown growers will maximise maize silage yield and profitability by keeping the planting population up — even if it does cost a bit more for seed

Published New Zealand research1 has shown that crops planted at 85,000 plants per hectare have the same starch (and therefore grain) percentage per kilogram of drymatter as crops planted at 130,000 plants/ha.

Each year the Pioneer® brand products research team conducts multiple trials to determine the optimum planting populations for our hybrids. Recent population research also contained two competitor hybrids — HSR Maximus and HSR Olympiad.

In these trials, Pioneer® brand 34P88 and 33M54 both yielded more than HSR Olympiad and Maximus, even at populations as low as 70,000 plants per hectare. HSR Olympiad and Maximus showed the same

“The recent fall in milksolids payout means many dairy farmers are focussed on reducing the cost of their feed”, says Booth. “Choosing the highest yielding hybrid and keeping the planting population up may increase your costs slightly but it will greatly improve your profit.”

“New Zealand research has demonstrated that highest yields result from uniform well grown crops of high yielding hybrids planted at populations selected to optimise drymatter yields”, says Craig Booth, Northland Area Manager for Pioneer® brand products.

Maize silage yield data collected from five replicated trials showed that the highest plant populations (110,000 and 130,000 established plants per hectare) gave the highest drymatter yields. Crops planted at these populations produced a statistically significant yield advantage over crops established at 90,000 plants per hectare, which in turn were higher than 70,000 plants per hectare (Figure 1).

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard.
