Wandering stock is posing a significant hazard to drivers in Northland and the NZ Transport Agency is reminding landowners to ensure land is securely fenced.

The Transport Agency’s Journey Manager for Northland, Jacqui HoriHoult, says her office receives more complaints about wandering stock than any other highway incident, with about 50 calls a month.

“When farm animals stray onto a highway or road, they become a significant danger to all road users.”

In the five years between 2008/12, there have been 146 crashes involving farm animals straying onto Northland’s highways and roads. Four crashes involved serious injury, 21 involved minor Stock on roads is almost always unexpected and hazardous injuries, and 121 were the police or the risk of a civil case from non-injury.

Gravel removal a win-win

Applications are being sought by the Northland Regional Council to remove excessive gravel build up from two Northland rivers and as long as there is no cost to council, the gravel is free.

Under resource consents held by the council, contractors have been invited to remove thousands of tonnes of gravel from the Kaeo and Waitangi Rivers.

Rivers programme manager for the council, Joseph Camuso, says under the terms of the long-running consents, up to 8,000 cubic metres a year can be taken from the Kaeo River and up to 7,000 cubic metres from the Waitangi River.

“While we hold the consents, approved contractors can work under their own terms and as long as they meet our specific requirements and extract the gravel at no cost to us, it is theirs for free.”

The gravel, classified fine to medium, is normally used or sold by contractors as trench bedding, for farm races or as general fill.

Growing up on a Northland dairy farm, Scott Candy’s hunting and trapping as a young fellow has led on to his present successful business in possum furs and fibres.

H

e is part of an industry that annually is worth more than a million dollars to Northland’s economy. As well, Scott’s operation provides local employment while

removing a destructive pest from the environment.

worked for over a decade. The family has helped establish the business — Karlene picking up skins and daughter Sharnise, still at school, becoming an efficient possum plucker. Son Dean is in dairying. “He bought his first vehicle out of trapping,” Scott explains.

Beside the fur and fibre business and Karlene’s QCONZ work (dairy consultancy and quality control) the Candy’s two blocks of land support beef raising and dairy grazing. Sharnise’s horses run on paddocks adjoining ten acres of native bush. “When we first bought here we trapped 350 possums,” says Scott.

In 2003 Scott was working with the Department of Conservation. The newly formed Puketi Forest Trust, Ohu Mai Puketi, needed trappers. Scott began on a crew cutting trap lines. In his first job he cut 80 kilometres. For seven years he managed all the lines for the Trust,

trapping mustelids and feral cats. Scott, or employee Mark Troughton, are still checking most of the 10 stoat trap lines now in the forest.

Ian Wilson of Ohu Mai Puketi says that three years of Scott’s trapping brought stoat numbers close to zero and killed over 1,500 stoats and feral cats. With rats trapped as well, tui and fantail have increased four times since the Trust’s efforts began. Kiwi numbers are up and the forest can support kokako and black robins. “For the past few years there’s been really good nesting with robins and fantails,” Scott agrees. He adds that trapinators, a closed type of bait station, when high enough to be out of reach of pigs have proved particularly successful.

with DOC too, using puppets to feed them so they didn’t latch onto humans. He would only come down from the remote forest area at weekends.

Other work has been with local kaitiaki and enviroschools — helping grow the public who can adeptly trap, kill and pluck possums.

Scott’s work has evolved into his present operation where he and his two trappers and 60 hunters from the region supply his agency Northland Possum Fibre Procurement, the Northland Fur agent for Basically Bush Ltd. Last year around 10 tonne of possum were collected.

Possum fur varies — Northland possums are generally grey with a pocket of ‘Big Darks’ at Tutamoe behind Kaikohe. The fur and fibre is

nationally worth $100 million per annum. The 2011 price was $135 per kilogram. Now at $120 kg, Scott describes it as still a strong market.

China buys most of the fur with the United States market increasing.

The 100kg bales go to The Tannery at Woodville for quality control and dressing. Fibre goes on to Woolyarns in Wellington. Possum/Merino mix was pioneered by Woolyarns in the 1990s and breathed new life into the country’s textile industry. Scott says that with Woolyarns developing another new product using possum fibre the industry is solid — something that also encourages the resurgence of native species in Northland forests.

It’s always been said that a complete job change can work wonders, but for former scuba dive instructor Rocky Olsen, it’s been profound.

After three years teaching scuba skills in Whangarei, Rocky decided to head back to his old trade of fencing, and is now fencing tutor-assistant at the Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre at Tauhoa, near Warkworth.

The Wairarapa based rural training centre established in 1919 to help returning soldiers, has been in partnership since 2012 with Northland’s NorthTec, offering a range of farm and classroom based agricultural courses.

Tauhoa born and bred, Rocky says he enjoys teaching young people and he’s keen to share his years of fencing skills learned running his own business, and says he still stands by his business motto: “We don’t sit on the fence, we stand by it.”

Tutor Tim O’Leary agrees and says it’s important to ‘do the job once and do it properly’.

“A good stock fence should have a lifespan of between 40 and 50 years if the job has been done right.

You can have all the right materials, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, then the fence won’t last.”

Like Rocky, Tim has been farming and contract fencing all his life and says he’s always had a ‘bit of a passion for teaching’ and enjoys watching his students develop.

“The biggest thrill is when they start taking pride in what they’re doing.”

18-year-old Daniel Cornelius started with Taratahi at the start of the year as a youth guarantee student, a government funded initiative offering free training for 16 to 19-year-olds.

Taratahi’s philosophy of real training on real farms ensures fencing students get the job done right from the word go

Daniel says once he finished the 23week programme, he signed up for the level 3 national certificate in fencing.

“I needed to learn more about fencing and get more experience. It’s important to make sure everything is 100 per cent from the word go.”

while it was confusing at the start, she says the course is now coming together.

“There’s more to fencing than just putting up fences — we also learn valuable organisational skills. It’s important to be organised otherwise you go backwards. If you’re organised from the word go, you get the job done quicker.”

In partnership with Taratahi, NorthTec offers several agricultural programmes on a range of farms and venues throughout Northland. The practical trade programmes teach real life-skills while completing NZQA qualifications.

Students work with qualified and experienced tutors, gaining theory and practical knowledge in such areas as animal husbandry, soil and crop management, fencing, ATVs, chainsaws and land management.

A new national certificate in fencing programme starts this month at Tauhoa and at the 2,750-hectare Otakanini Topu farm on the banks of the Kaipara Harbour.

The programme is for any student with a genuine interest in farming and rural activities, with a focus on working for a fencing contractor or setting up their own fencing business.

Te Whai Bay Wines owner, Nicola Deveraux said she was delighted to have won the regional final.

“To have your business plans and start up recognised and endorsed by experts is very encouraging.”

Established in late 2012, Ms Deveraux says Te Whai Bay is on the way to becoming a recognised New Zealand wine brand and becoming what she hopes will be a ‘complete wine experience for visitors and locals to enjoy’.

She says her vision — with the help of local and award winning architect, David Wingate — is a winery and tasting room in an architectural building set amongst the vines, with a mezzanine, cellar and courtyard.

“This is still at the drawing stage though I have already cleared the area and planted new vines around the site. By next year the building will be in progress and the immediate surrounding vines already taking shape. The building will sit in among vines.” Ms Deveraux says she has had an interest in wine for many years and the desire to

combine this interest with a business grew when she established her bicycle tour business “Wined About Bike Tours” in late 2010.

“When a local vineyard became available, it was a good opportunity to make that dream a reality.”

The former midwife who is currently doing a wine-making and viticulture degree through EIT in Hawkes Bay, says she hopes the venue will become a true ‘destination’ within Mangawhai and Northland, and an ‘iconic statement in the heart of Mangawhai wine country’.

The vineyard also hopes to expand into making contract wine for other labels and Ms Deveraux says they also want to eventually offer a venue for weddings and family celebrations, plus a small convention centre.

“We hope to begin making our own wines next year, but for now, our chardonnay is made at Marsden in Kerikeri. We have a merlot and rosé in production (coming out at Christmas), at Pleasant Valley wines in West Auckland.

We are now bottling and labelling a riesling from Hawkes Bay.

There are plenty of on-farm opportunities for measures to improve water quality in our region’s streams and rivers.

Since last year, Northland Regional Council has been working with farmers to reduce the impact of farming on water quality by developing individualised Farm Water Quality Improvement Plans.

To date, 96 of these concise working documents have been completed and another 90 or so are in the pipeline — and the council is keen to help out other landowners that might be keen to get a water quality plan developed for their own farm.

One of the council’s land management advisors will, at the request of landowners, carry out a farm inspection and then prepare a plan identifying measures that will provide water quality benefits.

Amongst the issues considered are: • fencing to exclude stock from streams and coastal marine areas • protecting wetlands that filter out sediment, nutrients and faecal matter

• fencing and managing regionally significant wetlands • preventing and controlling soil erosion • culverts and crossings over streams • riparian management • management of runoff from track • whether grazing systems are minimising sediment runoff from paddocks.

Together with the farmer, the advisor will work out an order of priority for undertaking specific measures. That order is determined not just by off-site effects but also how it fits with the farm’s development programme, fence maintenance and replacement, and the farmer’s ability to fund the work.

To help farmers implement highpriority measures, the council also has some funding available. Works identified as ‘Priority 1’ in a Farm Water Quality Improvement Plan may be eligible

Regional Field Days put customers on doorstep

Businesses who attend regional field days in Northland, Central Districts and Southland at the start of next year will probably catch up with 80% of their clientele over the space of three days according to Dargaville Honda and Bryant Tractors representatives.

From February 14, 2014 to March 14, 2014 the rural communities of Southland, the Wairarapa and Northland come together to attend three of the biggest events on the rural calendars with crowds of 30,000 and 40,000 streaming into Dargaville, Fielding and

Waimumu. With visitors largely being drawn from farming districts around the region they represent the basis of much of regional rural professionals’ customer base.

“Exhibitors have literally got half their clientele walking past and through their site all day,” says Duggan. “It’s a great way for businesses to reconnect with a lot of customers in a short time.”

Bryant Tractors has had a site at the event for 29 years and director Murray Bale says it presents representatives with the opportunity to see many potential customers in one place that they have been talking to remotely

for weeks and sometimes months.

Dargaville Honda has been at the Northland Field Days for the past 12 years and owner Bruce McKenzie says there is no comparison when it comes to lead generation.

“There is no other time of the year when so many people walk by your door,” says McKenzie. “For what we spend on it it’s as good, if not better than anything else we do.”

With the 2014 Northland Field Days scheduled for February 27 — March 21 Duggan says businesses only have five months to book.

Accessing free nitrogen

Nitrogen is essential for plant growth and when the first plants appeared on our planet 460 million years ago, the nitrogen necessary for plant growth was supplied directly out of the atmosphere, for free. That source of supply is still available today and is still free. Agrissentials’ customers just take it for granted. Incidentally, there is approximately 33,000 tonnes of nitrogen above every hectare of our planet.

In his book ‘The Closing Circle’ Doctor Barry Commoner, United States of America, characterised the nitrogen fertiliser industry in its hurtling dash for profits as one of the ‘cleverest business operations of all time’. Evidence exists that in the presence of artificial nitrogen (urea) the natural fixation of nitrogen from the air by soil micro-organisms stops and as a result, it is increasingly difficult for farmers to give up the use of the artificial product. Like addictive drugs, artificial nitrogen creates its own demand.

In a recent farm journal article, ‘vets are perplexed by cows becoming sick and dying because of phosphorus deficiency despite high levels in the soil. Apparently the answer lies in the levels of available calcium in the soil.

Cows can only utilise phosphorus at half the rate of calcium ie 2 to 1 in favour of calcium. If calcium is low, the available phosphate for the animal is even lower, by half, even if phosphorus levels are higher the cows cannot utilise it without the calcium to go with it. In cold weather calcium uptake is naturally less. However, the real culprit is excessive applications of urea, especially autumn and winter and early spring. The excess nitrogen is converted to nitrate

and leaches out of the soil as calcium nitrate leaving less calcium for plant uptake’ — so requiring another application of causmag. Here is a great rannygazoo example of the chemical treadmill.

DO YOU HAVE A TRUST? ARE YOU SURE? In late August the Law Commission recommended the Government make significant changes to the Law of Trusts. If the Law Commission’s recommendations are approved many farming families will be affected.

From a relationship property (matrimonial property) point of view, the two biggest recommendations relate to a new way to declare if a trust does not exist and taking assets directly from Trusts at the end of a relationship. I’ll cover the declaration point here. Next month I will discuss the ‘trust busting’. Following that I will explain how to protect yourself.

The recommended new trust act includes a provision which states exactly when and how a trust will be created. There are certain aspects of a trust that must exist for the trust to be valid. For example there must be a duty of good faith and an intention to transfer beneficial ownership.

Coming hand in hand with the power to determine when a trust exists, is the power to declare that a trust does not exist. When evidence suggests that a settlor has been using trust property as if it were their own, for example if the person retains excessive control over trust assets and uses them as their own property - a Court may well say there is no trust.

So if one person to the relationship “has a trust” and controls the trust in a way that is inappropriate, when the relationship ends the other may be able to have the trust declared void. In that case the property would be held personally. So a house the couple lived in would become the ‘family home’ under the Property (Relationships) Act 1976. It would be divided equally.

Currently there is no legislation which allows this to happen. The Courts have made their own law, but this can be very confusing, and costly to enforce. We are all aware that many trusts are being run at the ‘beck and call’ of the settlor. That has always been ‘known’ to be wrong but often it is hard to do anything about that. The new law would change that.

The recommendation of the Law Commission is that this change should apply to all Trusts whether new or existing at the time of the enactment of the new law.

Because of this if the recommendations are accepted it would be wise for families who use a Trust structure to consider their position and take advice.

With mental health awareness week here (October 7–11) one room-based elephant still being steadfastly ignored is that of mental health down on the farm.

There is no genteel way of confronting the issue, as the facts are stark. Rising pressures on farmers and alarming statistics that show depression is a real issue in rural communities has prompted rural organisations to urgently come together.

Ministry of Health data shows the suicide rate for those living in rural areas is 16 per 100,000 people, compared to a rate of 11.2 per 100,000 in urban areas.

There is no simple answer to why rural people experience higher rates of depression but several factors impact, including family, history, lifestyle, and just simple daily events.

Spring is here, heralding the beginning of a busy and productive period for Kiwi farmers. But as contractors mow and bale silage, and dairy herds move from calving season into milk production, there’s another aspect of rural business which also needs to be addressed while the sun shines.

Spring is the perfect time to break ground on new rural buildings, from sharemilkers’ cottages to covered feed pads, machinery barns to new, high-tech cowsheds.

Ingredients (makes 24) 1 cup milk 200g butter, softened 1 packet of Oreos 1¾ cups caster sugar Butter Icing 2 tsp vanilla essence 200g butter, softened 4 eggs 4 cups icing sugar 2¾ cups self-raising flour 100g milk chocolate 1. Preheat oven to 180, line 24 muffin pan with cupcake cases. Twist apart the Oreo cookies and place the iced side of the cookie facing up into the batter. Put the other side of the cookies into a bowl and crush roughly.

just combined. Add flour and milk in alternate batches and stir with a wooden spoon until just combined.

Add crushed Oreos to batter and fold through gently.

Our thoughts can sometimes be quite unhelpful, especially at 3.00am.

Ever have those thoughts that go round and round, the same pattern over and over? It’s called ruminating and it can play havoc on our sleep! In Matthew Johnstone’s book ‘Quiet the Mind — An Illustrated Guide on How to Meditate’ he tells us the following: ‘Over a 24-hour period we can process up to 70,000 thoughts and this continues even as we sleep. Each day contains 86,400 seconds so that equates to a different thought every 1.2 seconds or two thoughts for every heartbeat. Basically the brain never shuts up!’

So, what happens if our thoughts are mainly negative, angry, dark and intrusive? What if our thoughts keep telling us how useless and stuck and hopeless we are?

If this is happening over and over then our brain gets filled up with junk and it becomes hard to concentrate or think about more helpful things — or notice when the sun is shining or other positive things are happening.

Finding a way to stop paying attention to our thoughts and have some space to relax our brain can be restorative and extremely helpful.

Taking time to learn about the process of meditation, or other mindfulness practices can help us to reduce stress, feel calmer, be healthier and generally enjoy life more.

Next time a ruminating pattern appears ask yourself — ‘Is this helpful?’ If not, try telling yourself — ‘I do not need to think about this right now’ and pay careful attention to your breath. Matthew Johnstone’s book is available in the library and to order in our local bookstore.

The Farmall returns

Case IH is reviving the Farmall — one of the most recognised tractor model names from the International Harvester family.

The Farmall tractor was one of the first mass-produced tractor models built in the United States in the 1920s

by McCormick-Deering (later rebadged as International Harvester). Proven rugged performance, high value and

versatility has sold more than five million worldwide.

The original Farmall tractors, many of them built in a tricycle configuration, were popular in New Zealand during the middle of the twentieth century as all-

purpose farm vehicles and for vegetable cultivation and harvest.

The idea behind the Farmall tractor remains unchanged. The tractor is still very versatile, still delivers impressive performance and power proving to be a great all-rounder and a very reliable icon.

The Farmall will be reintroduced to New Zealand this year at the National Fieldays®, Mystery Creek June 12–15.

The launch of the Case IH Farmall JX series is aimed at small to mediumsized land owners for light ground cultivation, front-end loader operations, baler operation and transport.

This time around the new Case IH Farmall tractors will be available with larger engine capacity, suited to more general farm usage. The 8000 series, Tier 3, 4-cylinder turbo charged intercooler, fuel efficient engine to optimise economy with gross power ranging from 56kW/75hp up to 81kW/110hp for great performance.

The new Farmall JX shows new styling with a new ergonomic cab and unparalleled comfort, decreasing cab

noise level by 2dB. The cab shows curved tinted glass with a similar control layout to bigger Case IH tractors. Large roof windows provide very good visibility when working with loaders.

The drive chain includes a wet multi plate clutch (Cerametalic) for smooth effortless shifting from forward to reverse to give high durability and longevity for reduced operating costs.

The Farmall JX is a basic cost efficient tractor that is easy to operate offering a 12x12 transmission with optional 20x12 creeper — 51L/m hydraulics with the option of a standard two, or an offering of up to four rear remotes.

The Farmall JX simplicity continues with independent hydraulic and steering pumps, the transmission housing providing a common reservoir for the transmission oil, hydraulic system oil, steering system oil and the rear axle oil.

Hatching a bold new style Kia Motors have not been a company anyone could accuse of complacency lately. With design boss Peter Schreyer at the helm, the Korean automaker has enjoyed a renaissance over the past few years, with a clear vision of where they want to be and a stylistic direction which has made the brand instantly recognisable.

Concepts such as the Soul and the Optima seem to have come direct from the motor shows of Detroit and Geneva without the watering-down of design aesthetics seen in other brands, and that trend continues with the latest iteration of the Cerato family.

The Kia Cerato has always been the manufacturer’s middle-of-the-road car — a comfortable, reliable and safe family motor, pitched at a demographic who value fuel economy over flaring air intakes and turbo blow off valves.

Kia’s recent cars have always been sat on impressive alloys too and the Cerato hatch is no different.

A defining feature of the Cerato four-door is sheer attention to detail — puddle lamps, door handle illumination, keyless entry and start, steering wheel audio controls, colour, in-dash reversing camera — all migrate across to the hatch.

In fact, the gentlemen on the lot had only one omission from the suite of gadgets to note; rain sensing wipers.

Throw in subtle carbon fibre accents and real leather, and you begin to appreciate why Kia epitomises value for money.

The Cerato hatch comes with a choice of engines, up to the willing 2-litre model also found in the sedan.

The town of Hunterville, in the foothills of the North Island’s Central Plateau, is known for its rugged scenery, its isolation — and the monument which graces its main street.

It’s not a bronze statue of one of the town’s founding fathers, or a local lad risen to greatness, however. It’s a statue of the Kiwi farmer’s best friend — the Huntaway farm dog.

There are estimated to be over 200,000 working dogs in New Zealand, making it possible since pioneering times for farmers to run large herds across our uniquely challenging terrain.

Dogs such as the Huntaway, the Blue Heeler (imported from Australia, but more than welcome here) and the iconic Border Collie (immortalised by comic artist Murray Ball) have helped shape rural New Zealand, in much the same way that dogs in general have helped shape the world. was quite critical of the co-op because of what he described as a cat problem, was guilty of having in excess of 144 cats roaming and living around the cowshed. The farmer claimed that this was the result of irresponsible townies dumping pets at his milk tanker driveway.

In speaking to Farmers of New Zealand last week the farmer said he had alleviated much of the problem but still had 24 cats converging onto the cowshed milk room when the tanker arrived. One has to question what the farmer’s sense of reality is when effluent fines are given for continued noncompliance of effluent management and the second farmer cannot understand that the production of milk must comply with the Food and Safety Act and also Fonterra’s conditions of supply.

We dairy farmers, while being very pleased that Fonterra’s recent scare regarding what they believed was contamination of their milk product which turned out to be completely unfounded, certainly learnt the lesson that our continued access to our international markets depends upon the ability to produce high quality dairy products to maintain customer confidence.

Gone are the days where stories like the cream tester at a Northland dairy company taking off a cream can lid found a rat floating in the cream can. He wrote a note, put it on the

Dairying cream can, replaced the lid and returned the cream to the farmer concerned. The next day the cream tester recognised the cream supplier’s cream can which had a docket tied to the lid. The note said, “in view of your letter received yesterday that there was a rat inside this cream can, I have removed the rat.

I hope this is to your satisfaction.”

The old timers will remember many other stories of supply to the dairy companies when rules were not so stringent.

Farmers of New Zealand cannot defend farmers who let the dairy industry down and harm our reputation through indefensible acts.

Fonterra and Dairy NZ are introducing new codes to meet the requirements of the new Health and Safety Act. Effluent monitors, providing training courses, introduction of warrant of fitness programmes, nutrient budgets, soil

profile reports, sustainable milk plans to ensure compliance — these measures will be nationwide.

I have stated numerous times before that if these minority non-compliant dairy farmers consistently do not make an effort to meet the New Zealand dairy industry goals they run the risk of not having Fonterra’s Volvo and Scania tankers coming onto their farm to pick up their milk.

They will not only become a casualty of their own making but will cause other farmers to pay further compliance costs.

A dairy farmer, having to face the payment of a $157,000 fine over a 12 month period in most cases would cause financial ruin. Litigation insurance does not provide immunity where it is proven that a farmer has shown a reckless disregard for previous warnings to improve and comply with dairy effluent management rules.

Are you ready for the new season? When it comes to being organised with staff and machinery you probably are, but what about lameness? Or, are you like many who believe they won’t get lame cows this year? It is a bit like a new year’s resolution.

I guess it is understandable that people have every intention of doing their best in keeping this stock affliction down, but how are they going to achieve it? It is not going to happen automatically. You require a strategy, but in order to have a strategy

you need a good understanding of the contributing factors of the condition. I have written many articles about these factors and I will continue to do so, but what are you going to do when you do end up with lame cows — and you will get them.

How many do you need before you consider it a problem? Would you consider five cows in your lameness herd throughout the season a problem?

I know that many farmers would be more than happy if they only had five throughout the season. Let’s break it down. If you have a milking season of 40 weeks and if cows are lame on an average of four weeks then you will have about 50 lame cows that season because you replace the five affected cows every four weeks, so, over 40 weeks you replace them 10 times.

How much does a lame cow cost you? That also depends on who you talk to. Some people say $50 and some people say a $1,000. A few

years ago we sent out a questionnaire to 300 dairy farmers. With the answers that farmers were coming back with, we worked out that the average cost per lame cow in Canterbury was around $1,200.

That may seem very high but if you have a cow that is not in calf because of lameness then you have to replace that empty cow with a cow that is in calf. That in itself would cost you over $1,000 without the treatment cost or loss of production cost added on.

Then there are also plenty of cows that need to be culled because of lameness even though they are in calf. So I think you should work with a cost on average of $500 per lame cow.

That is possibly still on the conservative side, but in our example of 50 lame cows during the season you have a cost of $25,000. I don’t know about you but there are many good

things that I could do with $25,000! In my travels I come across many farmers who haven’t thought about the cost too much. I am just trying to put things into perspective. There are plenty of new milking sheds being built that have no facilities to trim cows.

Some people seem to find it hard to justify buying a crush or doing a hoof trimming course because they don’t have many lame cows. You don’t need many lame cows to have a problem that costs you lots of money, let alone considering the animal welfare costs.

ARGICULTURAL CONTRACTING A better way to banish slimy pests The mild, moist winter has provided an ideal environment for slug numbers to multiply. Now the slimy molluscs are ready and waiting to damage emerging pastures and crops.

Ravensdown Agrochemical Technical Manager Jeremy Klingender says last autumn’s booming slug populations put huge pressure on pastures and crops.

The mild winter has done nothing to quell these numbers.

Monitoring the slug population in paddocks is extremely important because just a small number will cause serious, yet barely visible, damage. To monitor the slug population, farmers should place a number of sacks in the paddock and leave them overnight. If around three or four slugs are found sheltering under each sack, they are probably causing economic damage to crops and pastures. Controlling slugs is an on-going process that must continue throughout the season until crops are well established. To complicate the situation, slug baits act differently on slugs at different developmental stages.

There is always a range of slugs at various developmental stages at any time in one paddock. Managing the differing life stages of slugs may require multiple applications of slug bait to ensure crop damage is reduced.

The more slugs present, the more applications of slug bait needed to control numbers. The active ingredient of slug bait influences the number of times you can apply it each year. Metaldehyde-

based baits such as Endure can be applied multiple times to increase the overall effectiveness.

Endure causes no negative effects on other beneficial species such as earthworms, which are vital to soil health. However, other baits with a methiocarb base can only be applied once each season, because they have the potential to damage earthworms and non-target arthropods.

Slug bait should be applied either ‘down the spout’ or broadcast with fertiliser just prior to, or soon after sowing, depending on sowing method.

Endure is most effective when broadcast. Slug bait can be re-applied 21 days later, with or without fertiliser.

When selecting slug bait, ask whether it is FertMark tested, so it spreads consistently every time it is mixed with fertiliser. The consistency of spreading is important to ensure that all areas of paddocks receive the desired amount of slug bait, for more effective control.

Farmers should also look out for slug baits that can be mixed with fertiliser, such as Endure, which can be mixed for free at any Ravensdown store. Be aware that slugs can survive the sprayout process, hidden beneath rubbish and animal waste, to start feeding as soon as the sown crop is germinating.

We grew up believing that clover caused bloat.

There was no substitute for horsepower when it came to Bathurst, and the way to increased horsepower being a bigger engine and more fuel down its throat.

I remember an experienced farmer telling me that adding potash to super was like increasing the octane rating of petrol, and more potash did indeed appear to grow more clover but the incidence and severity of bloat also increased. So with good reason we believed that clover caused bloat, but just as smaller engine cars have been

faster around Mt Panorama than the V8s there’s an increasing awareness that outstanding clover growth from early spring to late autumn is available without bloat being a problem.

Bloat is a result of the gut not working properly resulting in a build-up of gas that reduces intake of feed and production — and in severe cases animals die, with death often occurring quickly and unpredictably.

In 1981 Dr. Max Turner of Massey University linked bloat with a sodium potassium imbalance, with a possible link between the incidence of bloat and the increase in application of potassium fertiliser.

tissue and listed above ryegrasses, so there’s likely to be another factor.

Farmer experience is that animals with a full gut entering a fresh break of feed containing a high percentage of clover are much less likely to suffer from bloat than those that have not grazed for a couple of hours prior.

In 2006 independent measures from intensive dairy properties growing significantly more total pasture annually than district average, showed pastures on these farms to contain on average double the amount of clover over the four months of September to December, yet then, as in subsequent seasons the incidence of bloat was very low.

The common factor with the high clover content properties measured in 2006 was the use of CalciZest and DoloZest based soil nutrient programmes.

Reports from a steadily increasing number of properties using these programmes now also indicate that bloat is not considered a problem by their operators.

An increase in plant available calcium is a key requirement for the persistence of large leafed long stemmed clover.

CalciZest, a lime based product containing a selected range of live fungi and bacteria stimulates the growth of clover that is largely resistant to flea and weevil attack.

At optimum grazing time, clovers on these properties are largely solid stemmed. This suggests that the amount of potassium able to rapidly enter the plant is reduced and along with less bloat fully fed animals grazing these pastures are capable of producing close to their live weight in milk solids annually.

ARGICULTURAL CONTRACTING Drilling down to the roots of a vital technology Without the vast advancements in agriculture seen in the last century, it’s debatable if we could actually feed the majority of people on the planet.

As science unlocks the secrets of how plants and soil interact, technology turns this knowledge into practical tools for the farmer — and never has this been more apparent than in the manner in which many of our staple crops are now seeded.

Where once farmers would follow the ploughman with a basket, literally ‘broadcasting’ seed (and yes, this is where the term for radio and television transmission comes from), these days a powerful pneumatic seed drill takes up the task, equipped with computers to monitor seed spacing, depth and placement — sometimes even from space.

The earliest seed drills come from 1500 BC, when Babylonian farmers used reeds to push seeds one by one into irrigated soil. The Chinese were using ox-drawn multi-tine seed drills by 200 BC, allowing the mass cultivation of rice and grains.

Some historians believe that without the seed drill, China would never have become the large empire which it was at the time of Marco

Polo. He, coincidentally, is credited as perhaps bringing the seed drill idea to medieval Italy.

Nowadays the modern seed drill is a far cry from such primitive tools. Take for example the Vaderstad Seed Hawk 1300 — at over 25 metres wide and weighing 15 tons, this field-spanning monster uses GPS to precisely place every last seed, covering 61 hectares in a single load of its triple hopper.

Its direct-drilling method is especially effective in areas with low soil moisture.

Here in New Zealand we have little need for such titanic tools of agriculture — the Seed Hawk was built for the wide, flat plains of North America. But you’ll find high-tech seed drills attached to many farmers’ tractors in Canterbury nonetheless, prized for their ability to give seeds the best possible start in life.

As the farming sector continues to support a burgeoning population, technology such as seed drilling, hand in hand with a deeper understanding of soil chemistry and plant biology may be key to keeping healthy food on our plates.

RURAL CONTRACTING The best help for the big jobs Kiwi farmers are a resourceful bunch — a mix of geographical isolation, economic practicality and the capricious nature of the rural environment means that they often have to be!

But despite the traditional role of the farmer as a ‘jack of all trades’ around his own property, it’s still good to know that there is plenty of help on call when large or complex projects need to be undertaken. Big game on the high seas

The weather is warming up and the ocean is beckoning for another top season of angling in Northland — arguably one of the best places in the world to drop a line in the water.

And while tasty snapper are at the top of the list for many recreational fishos, it’s the big boys of the underwater world which attract a different class of anglers to our waters this time each year.

Like the safari hunters of old, there is a clear list of top fish which big-game anglers want to land.

The thrill of the fight and the catch is often enough too — many of these saltwater monsters are simply tagged and released, with photos and memories the

only trophy taken. Marlin are high on the leaderboard, as they have been since time immemorial.

Striped marlin are more common than their blue ‘cousins’ in our waters, and black marlin are rarer still, though lucky anglers can still hook one at any time of the season.

Yellowfin tuna are also found in Northland waters, and like their bluefin relatives further south they are true giants.
