Chairman of Farmers New Zealand, Ian Walker, is concerned that the negative flak against farmers and agriculture is pushing ‘generation y’ into ‘cooler’ industries “It’s what they call ‘the Peter Jackson effect’ — the politicians are very good at promoting it and movies are a cool thing to do, so we have piles and piles of students doing media studies, with no chance of a job, and with all the negative commentary around agriculture, we have less and less students signing up to do agricultural science degrees.”

When Ian studied agricultural science in the 1970s he says that the industry was thriving and farmers were perceived as ‘hard working good blokes’ and he believes the perception has changed in 2012 to ‘environmental monsters’.

“When the majority of people think about farmers they think about effluent going into the waterways and animal health and that’s what goes on the television.

‘Generation y’ likes to be liked. They like to be contributing to society in a constructive and positive way and if the dairy industry is akin to cigarette manufacture — why would they go there?”

He believes that there needs to be a serious attitude change to farming for the industry to continue, grow and prosper and attract newcomers.

“While you have that populist thinking that farming is always going to be bad for the environment people aren’t going to want to go into the industry. I actually think that we’re

being given a bad rap — we’re being blamed for past misdeeds because we didn’t know they were misdeeds such as clearing kauri forests in the nineteenth century.”

“You actually don’t have to farm in conflict with the environment but in order to do that your efforts have to be recognised by the government and society. Sure there are some environmental vandals out there, but 98 percent of farmers in the industry want to sustainably manage their farm.”

Wild and windy weather which each March has plagued the Northland Field Days might just be avoided next year The Dargaville event has been rescheduled — brought forward by two weeks to run from Thursday, February 21 to Saturday February 23.

The better weather prospects are a bonus for the date change which was made so that exhibitors could travel between the Northland Field Days, Central District Field Days and South Island Agricultural Field Days without having to worry about conflicting dates for the events.

“Previously agricultural machinery manufacturers, rural service providers and other exhibitors and participants had to pick and choose which event they went to,” said Northland Field Days president, Lew Duggan.

“It becomes difficult for any company to get from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island to three world-class

events in under a month, so two weeks between each of the events should give potential exhibitors plenty of time.’’

He also hopes the weather gods will appreciate the earlier date.

“The very first Northland Field Days was held during Cyclone Bola and we have had our fair share of wild weather since then. I’m confident that the weather will be kind between February 21 and 23 in 2013.”

Northland Field Days event coordinator Meagan Edmonds says there has already been a lot of interest from exhibitors in the new dates.

“Many previous exhibitors have already registered for next year and there are quite a few new people as well.”

The Importance of pH

Nutrient availability The chart, (which can be found in soil science text books), shows that optimum plant nutrient availability is achieved between pH 6.0 and 6.5. You can see that Potassium is only about 30% available at pH 5.0 however it is 100% available by 6.1. Perhaps the most dramatic example of nutrient availability is Phosphorus which is approximately 25% available at pH 5.5 but is 100% available at 6.5. The implications for farmers applying a Phosphate fertiliser when soil pH is below 6.0, is that approximately 75% of the applied plant available Phosphate is locked-up within a few days.

The good news is that raising pH releases previously locked up nutrients. Although seldom discussed, Aluminium is perhaps the most interesting of all. Are you aware that available aluminium is highly toxic to plant roots? Raising soil pH above 6.0, locks up Aluminium resulting in dramatic increases in pasture root depths. This increases pasture production and drought resistance.

It makes sound financial sense to raise soil pH and PFP Lime Prills make it easy.

Paul’s own daughters have been learning Clydesdale lore and history from an early age, and are already award winners in their own right, taking out honours at Clydesdale shows around the country

Paul’s show Clydesdales are an awesome sight

show prowess are also often working horses — and there’s no shortage of people who still turn out to see a team of the mighty creatures working the land.

“They earn their keep,” Paul says of his beloved working pair, Lochie and Burt.

“Lochie especially has won just about everything you can in New Zealand, and he still works on ploughs, harrows and on the wagon team.”

This means a spot of minor celebrity for the big stallion and his gelding team-mate.

Not only are Paul’s horses a favourite at events like the Northern Field Days, they’ve also recently completed four months of filming with Sir Peter Jackson for The Hobbit, and they’re a regular feature in downtown Auckland, where people flock to see them in the city’s trendy Wynyard Quarter.

Competitive Clydesdale eventing is not your average pony club

“Our biggest customers are kids and grandparents,” says Paul, recounting how the big Clydesdales delight the crowds, unfazed by the

click of countless cameras. “We must have given thousands of rides in the last few weeks alone, and the kids especially are just dumbfounded by the horses.”

Paul’s own daughters have been learning Clydesdale lore and history from an early age, and are already award winners in their own right, taking out honours at Clydesdale shows around the country. Emily, aged 12, and Billie, aged 7, show just how obedient and intelligent these equine giants really are, leading and commanding them with effortless ease.

Behind the scenes of course there is a lot of work to do to train the big Clydesdales to this level. It’s a slow, steady task, but it’s one which Paul enjoys.

“There’s nothing quite so satisfying as raising a horse from birth to be confident and trustworthy whether pulling a plough or taking to the city streets.”

From a rich colonial history through to a thriving modern show scene, the Clydesdale has come a long way.

“We’ve got a truly New Zealand Clydesdale now, with our own preferences

for the breed. Unlike some overseas Clydesdales, all of our horses are practical, from the show ring to the farm.”

Paul and his family are carrying on that tradition, while at the same time introducing these engaging, characterful horses to a whole new generation in town and country. Right now, they’re even helping plough and cultivate the Parakai community gardens, a job to which the big Clydesdales are perfectly suited.

One year the opportunity arose to breed a purebred Clydesdale horse, and from then on Paul has never looked back.

“They’re known as gentle giants, and for the most part it’s true,” he says.

“There’s an old saying that when you tell a ‘warmblood’ riding horse to jump it says ‘make me!’, but a Clydesdale says ‘ how high?’ They have a great temperament and they work hard.”

Hard work is in the blood for Paul’s six big purebreds, as it is for all Clydesdale horses. The breed comes from the Clyde area of Scotland where they were famed for their massive strength and obliging nature, with thousands exported to the new British colonies in the late 1800s and early 20th century.

Ian Walker has donned many hats over the years but one that he wears with passion is being a farmer As well as farming advocacy work as chairman of Farmers of New Zealand, with his wife Anne he owns a 1000 acre dairy farm in Kaitaia with around 320 milking cows.

The couple met while Ian was in his first year of his masters’ degree at Massey University, Anne lived in the flat next door and they soon discovered they had many common interests. After graduating, they both ended up in similar fields, Ian became the managing director of a communications company and Anne was a media manager and strategist.

The farm originally belonged to his father in-law, and the couple often visited on weekends.

“Anne’s father had three girls, he didn’t have a son, so basically I got the task of doing the heavy lifting,” says Ian with a hearty laugh.

but about 18 years ago, after his father in-law passed away, the couple decided to convert it to dairy.

“The price of beef wasn’t particularly great and the cash flow wasn’t on a regular basis — you basically got two cheques a year. When we converted to dairy it immediately gave us an increase in equity because the farm’s value doubled and then we could borrow off that.”

“I’ve been bringing franchises into the town and have been redeveloping stores to standards of what you’d expect in Auckland, and even though the economy is tough, we’ve been holding our own. For some parts of the business there’s been double digit growth in the past 18 months.”

In the early days, Ian used to wake at the crack of dawn to milk cows seven days a week, but as his business interests developed he employed a farm manager who has been with him for 15 years.

They enjoyed the lifestyle and when the opportunity arose to buy the neighbouring farm, the pair went into partnership with Anne’s father.

“I like to work on businesses rather than in businesses — I employ really good people and that’s one of the reasons that I’ve been successful.”

Hugh is also working on two more designs — a pole planting tool and a more cost effective round bale feeder.

Selling fertiliser brings responsibilities for the supplier Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

I was amazed — horrified would be a better word — reading last week the list of fertilisers sold by one of the ‘big two’ companies to a dairy farmer over recent years. Year after year the recommendation had been for potash super and urea.

But the trends in soil test levels over the same period showed clearly that all was not well. Olsen P levels were through the roof — some paddocks as high as 70; insane, especially given the soil type was lower P retention. But despite the high P, and the fact that superphosphate automatically contains 12% sulphur, soil S levels, both sulphate and, more seriously, organic S as well, were very low. Potash (K) levels were also low, despite 30% potash super having been

the most commonly used product in the past.

So what had gone wrong? Firstly, the story the soil tests were telling had been pretty much been ignored — or the field representative had not had sufficient training to interpret them. Secondly, on this soil type under high rainfall, the sulphate-sulphur applied in SSP can be largely leached through the root zone — taking valuable nutrients such as K with it — in as little as six weeks. This in turn

means that the soil organic matter — derived from the decomposition of plant tissue, excreta and soil fauna and microorganisms, is also starved of sulphur, and therefore is not providing the pool of essential slow-release S to support vigorous pasture.

More and more urea was being recommended to cover increasing feed deficits. Consequently, clover had disappeared from the sward, reducing its feed value. The potash content was reduced to 15%, exactly the wrong thing to do in this situation. No herbage analyses had ever been performed.

Just how many other farmers are receiving such woefully inadequate fertiliser advice? I suspect the damage in lost production and to the environment caused by incompetent ‘mainstream’ advice is much, much larger than the lost production being caused by purveyors of low-nutrient content ‘magic mixes’. At least in the case of these, farmers are more wary, and once there are signs that production is not being maintained — generally within a year on dairy farms or two years on a sheep and beef farm — they give the seller the flick.

So what should have being used on this farm? From my assessment of the soil tests, the maintenance fertiliser

should have been changed to a DAP/ RPR/potash/elemental S blend at least five years ago. The total P — two thirds of it as RPR — should have been halved from 60 kg P/ha annually to 30 until soil P levels were back in the 30s. Potash should have been increased slightly until soil K was back up to 8-10. All sulphur in this blend would have been applied as elemental S. This would have given the soil organic matter the opportunity to accumulate a reserve of organic S. As well as fixing the problems, this blend would be about 20% cheaper!

Ironically, last year the recommendation was actually changed to eliminate P, but the money saved has had to be spent on ever-increasing urea, in four or five applications per year, to meet feed requirements.

Given this wasn’t done, my assessment for this farm now was that the above RPR-based blend should be applied in smaller, more frequent applications over the year, most preferably as a fluid mixed with fluidised inhibitor-treated urea, which is what should be being applied instead of environmentally wasteful granular urea. These fluidised mixes can be applied both from trucks fitted with onboard processing equipment, and from helicopters On a positive note, it is pleasing to see that the superphosphate manufacturers are finally starting to react to increasing water-quality concerns by recommending the use of RPR in P-sensitive catchments. Better late than never — I hope!

Conservation — nice have, or must have?

Given the current economic challenges we sometimes have to ask the difficult question, is conservation a ‘must have?’ or a ‘nice to have?’

From a tourism point of view the answer is easy. No one comes to New Zealand to visit a 500-year-old castle or see Roman ruins; they come to see our natural history. Our forests are the cathedrals of the South Pacific. Visitors want to swim and surf our beaches, take in our great walks and go ski on our mountains.

There are signs of our continued success in preserving our natural environment. For example, thanks to the success of the Natural Heritage Management System programme we now have a record of 1300 areas across the country where our flora and fauna can be regularly monitored.

This world leading long-term initiative will allow us for the first time to collect and compare data on the state of our biodiversity nationally, and plan for its longterm preservation.

Conservation is one of our largest, if not the largest, tourism provider in the country.

Figures from Statistics New Zealand show that in the year ended March 2011 the total tourism expenditure was $23 billion, an increase of 2.1 per cent from the previous year. International tourism increased 1.5 per cent or $147 million to $9.7 billion, that’s a contribution of 16.8 per cent to New Zealand’s total exports of goods and services.

But this government initiative is only one of many ways we could be maintaining and preserving our great natural resources.

Unlike Peter Jackson we can’t use special effects! We all need to think about how we can contribute more to ensure our beautiful and valuable asset of conservation is maintained for future generations.

Domestic tourism generated $13.2 billion, an increase of 2.5 per cent from the previous year. That’s hardly surprising given that 25 per cent of New Zealanders visited a National Park last year.

Can your body heal?

Without our in-built healing systems our first health problem may well have been our last! The health issues that we experience are often the result of these repair processes not working properly or at worst even working against healing. When unwell we need to make sure these repair processes are able to work as well as possible. If not you may be consigning yourself to a lifetime of poor health.

Every health problem creates its own nutritional requirements. For example, people with inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis have a lower level of vitamin and mineral absorption because their digestive system has been compromised by the disease. This is especially true of some B vitamins, notably B12 and folic acid, vitamin D, calcium and zinc. These can be obtained from a good multi-nutritional supplement.

Additionally anti-inflammatory compounds such as those in acai, grape seed and turmeric can be useful if given in the right combinations and doses.

As an example of how this works in practice, I have been helping someone with arthritis, muscular pain and low energy. After investigation we found she had long standing arthritis and had developed statin myopathy.

This is the muscular weakness and pain from long term use of cholesterol lowering medications. These can also interfere with normal energy metabolism as they restrict co-enzyme Q10 needed for energy conversion within cell mitochondria. We made sure her diet was anti-inflammatory then added a broad spectrum multi-nutritional supplement plus a high grade CoQ10 supplement.

I have just spoken to her and after only two months she has had a major reduction in muscle and joint pain and has had a significant increase in her energy levels. While her results have been excellent there was nothing particularly difficult about what we did. We just identified the healing processes compromised by disease and medication then added these from both supplements and a good diet.

The battle against pests — we’re all in it together

New Zealand is a country that is very much dependent on primary production. Protecting our production base is a fundamental responsibility we all share — particularly when it comes to preventing the spread of pests and diseases Consider PSA in kiwifruit, which has now reached the Coromandel Peninsula.

All evidence points to the entry of this disease into New Zealand and its relentless spread being unwittingly caused by humans.

While the movement of kiwifruit plants (or bits of them) is an obvious culprit, think too about machinery, hand tools, clothing and the like as workers

or casual visitors move from orchard to orchard. Northland kiwifruit growers are not being unfriendly in putting up large ‘No Entry’ signs at their gate — their survival depends on it.

While the commercial kiwifruit grower works to strict biosecurity guidelines and their plants are under constant surveillance, others could unknowingly be putting their industry at risk.

Have you got a kiwifruit plant in your garden or one at the old house site down the back of the farm? There are a few abandoned kiwifruit orchards that haven’t yet been cleaned up. Because they are untended and not under constant surveillance, these ‘domestic’ and wild vines could harbour disease for some time before it is detected.

The kiwifruit industry and the Northland Regional Council are running a campaign to, literally, root out these old vines — if you know of any, contact the council’s biosecurity team on 0800 002 004.

The spread of weeds is also a serious risk to our primary production, and there are simple, good practice measures you can take to prevent it.

• Check the hay bailer and any imported hay is free of weeds.

Ragwort, parsley dropwort, Californian and nodding thistle are easily spread this way.

• Make sure hydraulic diggers and other earthmoving equipment is free of gorse seed, aquatic weeds or anything else that may get caught up in the machinery.

• Source your road metal, gravel and limestone rock from weed-free quarries.

If something does get past your own biosecurity system, deal with it promptly.

If a new weed appears on your farm, contact the regional council, have it identified and get advice on how to deal with it.

Biosecurity is not ‘them’ and ‘us’.

Despite other commodities softening in price and demand in recent months, log and lumber prices have continued to hold or firm slightly with demand also holding at reasonable levels in our key markets The key player continues to be China. Consumption levels for Pacific Rim softwoods are continuing at a reasonable pace. One good example is Lanshan Port in Shandong province north of Shanghai where Laurie Forestry exports logs to amongst other places. Current inventory levels are around 450,000 cubic metres with consumption running at 12,000 cubic metres per day.

The market continues to hold in this seemingly endless limbo state waiting some sort of sales impetus from the Christchurch rebuild. Some are trying to build stock at present which will not be making the bank managers happy but will ensure sawmills have the product when the phone starts to ring.

One sawmilling commentator described the likely effect of a rapid change in demand versus supply as being something akin to a nuclear explosion suggesting it will be chaotic, out of control and leave a trail of price blood behind it when it finally happens. One can only hope it will be much more controlled and civilised than that.

Despite those of a more gloomy ilk, the demand does appear to be picking up albeit modestly and I have noted inventories in lumber yards do not thus far appear to be anything akin to a mountain. Framing lumber is the main staple diet and as luck would have it, Canterbury forests are pretty good at producing framing grade logs. (I bet there will be one or two who would like to argue the toss over that one!)

I have noted the wailing and gnashing of teeth over the US$/ NZ$ exchange rate has lifted in intensity over the last month no doubt exacerbated by commodities coming under selling price pressure. A shift downward of 1c over the last month is hardly likely to win the Reserve Bank Governor any gongs but there is a few of us who would nominate him for national hero status if he could just encourage the exchange rate back below 0.70c.

Dairying Soil Matters — with Peter Burton

How fertiliser nitrogen applied now may cause your land to devalue in the future I was approached recently by a dairy farming family passionate about their farm and dedicated to the dairy industry. Their concern was the steadily escalating cost of producing milksolids and the rapidly declining amount paid for them.

Specifically they were concerned about the cost of their fertiliser programme which included the cost of urea. Although they said those costs were not rising rapidly they had drawn a link between fertiliser and what seemed to be declining pasture production.

Having already voiced their concern about total pasture production to the

representative of their local fertiliser company, a soil test had been taken and the recommendation was to increase the level of all inputs particularly phosphorus and nitrogen.

That didn’t sit well with them, and they didn’t see it as an answer to the increasing damage by flea and weevil each year resulting in greater areas of pasture requiring renovation or renewal in autumn.

My recommendation was to apply more calcium in the form of lime in conjunction with DoloZest the biologically active product based on dolomite.

Winter is a fairly easy time for chilling your bulk milk. Chilling water temperatures are low and most milk volumes are small. However, it won’t stay that way for long. Summer is on its way and temperatures will rise, including water and bulk milk temperature.

In the NZFSA (New Zealand Food Safety Authority) Code of Practice it states: “Milk must be cooled to 18 deg C or less at the completion of the first milking into the bulk milk tank, and should not exceed 13 deg C at the completion of subsequent milkings and milk must be cooled to and maintained at 7 deg C or below within 3 hours of the completion of milking and kept at 7 deg C or below until it is collected or the next milking.”

This is a tough ask for a lot of dairies with primary chilling water for some at over 23 deg C during summer. It is a reality, however, that the dairy companies are quickly toughening up around this Code of Practice. Dairy companies will now not pick your milk up if it is over 18 deg C after the morning milk or above 14 deg C after subsequent milkings.

Unfortunately, the solutions are not cheap. They have to be designed to

suit your dairy and your milk load to ensure your milk gets into the vat and is maintained at the right temperature. Any cooling system has to be maintained properly to be cost effective. It is the long term solution that you need to focus on when upgrading your cooling systems.

The answer is, in the short term yes, and in the longer term no, depending on quantity and frequency of application.

It has since been explained to me that some farmers have become conditioned to short term fixes, with a subsequent loss of long term perspective.

Increasingly local body authorities have been drawing lines on maps and stipulating the conditions under which farmers particularly intensive dairy operations may continue to operate.

One regulation that is being put in place throughout the country right now stipulates the quantity of nitrate nitrogen permitted to leak from farms and in some instances the time by which the standard must be met.

Farmers no longer have a privileged position when it comes to their environmental footprint and should they decide not to comply with regulations on nitrate nitrogen losses they are likely to have to relocate, and eventually the net will spread.

The effect that will have on current land values could be catastrophic. There are however nutrient programmes that include strategic use of nitrogen fertiliser which may well allow intensive pastoral farming to continue in even the most sensitive water catchment areas.

These programmes are supported by long term grass growth figures, total farm production records, and most recently nitrate nitrogen leaching figures.

Not proof as that will take at least ten years of work by research institutes, but enough data to show there is a sound long term alternative.

A beautiful autumn and early winter took a horrible turn at end of the winter. We have had an amazing amount of rain. Some farmers have told me that it washed the tracks clean!

We have been inundated with phone calls to book lame cows in for trimming.

Calving is the period when many farmers don’t have the staff resources available to trim cow’s feet over and above the extra work load they already have at this time.

So, what sort of problems are we seeing? Most of it is severe bruising — a sure sign of laminitis. What has happened is that all that rain has had an effect on the grass. The fibre in the grass breaks down and becomes less effective, whilst the protein becomes more rumen digestible. Severe changes in the weather substantially increase the stress the cows are experiencing, especially when coinciding with calving time when there are a lot of hormonal changes also going on in their bodies. Have a look at some of the cow’s hooves of cows that have only calved today — they will have bruising as well. This would not have come from any physical damage because these cows will have only had one or two days

So, what can we do to prevent it?

Nothing! Laminitis is a normal occurrence in our dairy cows. Our aim should be to just keep it under control or managed. The key is to minimise stress and feed the cows sensibly. With that I mean making straw available and not making sudden changes to their diet by taking them off winter crops one day and putting them on grass the next. Feeding straw will create more body heat and it creates a better rumen function, therefore, the cow will be more content. Straw also helps the transition from winter crop to grass but it won’t eliminate laminitis if the transition is overnight or too sudden.

Rural repairs and renovations face legal shake up While the changes to building laws are at their most apparent on large jobs, which require a resource consent from your local council, even the smaller more prosaic tasks associated with the routine upkeep and maintenance of a working farm may require the professional touch While it’s as true today as ever before that Kiwi farmers pride themselves on self-reliance, modern regulations have (for good or bad) impinged upon what was once the domain of the ‘number eight wire’ mentality.

For small tasks not classified as ‘restricted building’ work it’s OK to proceed with your own DIY designs.

But if a job involves electricity, gas or high pressure water it’s a legal requirement to seek the help of a qualified tradesperson. This is cast into stern perspective when one realises that the modern farm is more than just a home — it’s classed as a business, every bit as dangerous as a factory or forge.

In order to keep renovations above board and legal, especially with the business aspect of the farm in mind, it’s always best to talk to your local roofers, drainlayers, plumbers,

gasfitters and electricians rather than risking not only a power outage or burst pipe, but also the wrath of the powersthat-be in the regulatory framework.

Critics of the new building laws — both in terms of ground-up builds and renovation work — may declaim the encroachment of the nanny state, but supporters of the law reform point to prior crises, such as the leaky buildings scandal, and rightly assert that ‘cowboys’ in the trades need to be brought to heel.

Hunters head for the hills

It’s a yearly event marked in red on the calendars of Kiwi hunters — a chance not only to compete for big prizes and unprecedented bragging rights, but also an opportunity to experience the rugged beauty of an untouched corner of the North The Mangamuka Pig Hunt is famed across the country as one of the best hunting experiences of the year, in an area of unspoiled hill country which sits across the mid north like a slice of primordial New Zealand transposed into modern times. The dense bush and rolling slopes of the Mangamuka range are the perfect breeding ground for wild pigs, and since their introduction to these shores the big beasts have made the hills their own.

But they haven’t had it all their own way — this is also the natural habitat of New Zealand’s top predator — the Kiwi hunter! Generations of hardy outdoorsmen and women have literally ‘brought home the bacon’ from long treks through the Mangamukas,
