DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle says cruel and illegal practices are not in any way condoned or accepted by the industry as part of dairy farming.

“The vast majority of farmers care about their animals and we are committed to farming to very high standards,” says Mr Mackle.

“DairyNZ works closely with the wider industry in the management of bobby calves, including the transport sector, meat processors and dairy companies, as well as Federated Farmers and MPI.” Mr Mackle says the video released recently by Farmwatch shows some footage of transport companies and their workers, as well as some unacceptable behaviour by farmers of dragging calves.

“Last year we saw footage of abhorrent treatment and cruelty of calves at a pet food processing plant.

This recent footage of calves being passed and loaded on to trucks is nothing like that footage, and cannot and should not be compared.”

“While some of the handling is rougher than we would like, the workers appear to be following the accepted practice of loading calves by rolling them rear end first. Despite perception, this is the best way to prevent calves from stepping back out of the truck and causing themselves harm.”

He added that the new regulations coming into effect in August 2017 addressed this by requiring farmers to have loading platforms and therefore reducing the requirement to lift.

“Many farmers have already taken steps to put loading facilities in place well ahead of the regulations.”

He says that while formal figures are not yet available there was anecdotal evidence of significant improvement

over the past season with the numbers of calves that are picked up being fit for transport.

Mr Mackle also acknowledges the significant amount of work the sector, and especially the farmers themselves, have done to ensure improvements.

DairyNZ as part of the wider group has focussed on supporting farmers by holding bobby calf focus events and training which was attended by more than 2300 farmers, updating resources and posters for ensuring calves were fit for transport and loading facility design and having new bobby calf handling resources.

“While there is still work to do with a minority of farmers, it is important to remember that the vast majority of our dairy farmers are treating their animals with care and respect.”

New committee members needed

The Northland Agricultural Research Farm at Dargaville is looking for new committee members.

The farm is owned by all Northland dairy farmers and undertakes dairy farm systems research. A recent study has shown that research at NARF has provided significant benefits to Northland farmers.

Sean Bradbury has recently taken over as Chair of the committee that governs NARF and is keen to get more farmers on board.

The current committee consists of five farmer members along with a number of rural professionals.

Farm manager Kate Reed is in her first season on farm. She is following in the footsteps of Karla Frost who won the Northland Dairy Farm Manager of the Year title 2016 and came third in the national competition.

The farm has also had two other managers who have won the same award in recent years.

NARF committee chair Sean Bradbury says it is important to have someone managing the farm that understands the research objectives.

“We are really pleased with how Kate is doing in the role, managing three farms and ensuring collection of the data we need takes good organisational skills.”

The current research at NARF is comparing the three farm systems with differing levels of inputs.

Science manager Chris Boom says “Northland is very lucky to have a facility

like NARF along with such an awesome group of committee members.

“There is no other facility like this in the country with the ability to run three farms alongside each other, in a winter wet, summer dry environment and a kikuyu/ryegrass based pasture.

“So often we have to rely on research from Waikato or Canterbury which doesn’t have the same challenges as we do.”

Kate Reed recently appointed as farm manager at Northland Agricultural Research Farm in Dargaville NARF is holding its next field day on Thursday, December 1. Guest speakers are, well known accountant and farm business commentator Pita Alexander, and DairyNZ principal scientist Dr John Roche.

The results of the current trial will also be presented.

Fortnightly farm committee meetings are currently held on Thursdays, 10.30am — 12.30pm. Meetings are open to the public and include a farm walk.

Rachael Blackley grew up on a sheep and beef farm in Purua and now lives in Matarau.

After studying Agricultural Science at university she managed her father’s dairy farm for two years before moving on to further educate herself.

“W

e moved to Purua from Tauranga when I was 10-years-old. Suddenly my six siblings and me went from being townies to a little rural school of 11 kids. It was a big shock and we had to quickly adapt to the rural life because the other students had never seen city slickers,” said Rachael.

“It was hard at first but I grew to love animals and dad and I started raising calves and we went from there. I initially wanted to be a vet but didn’t get into the class so I changed to agriculture.” The family farm had been leased and when the lease expired Rachael’s dad asked her to take over and she ran it solely

for two years. “When I completed my degree he decided to get the dairy farm back into the family. I was straight out of university and didn’t really have enough experience and had no one to learn off as dad was not a dairy farmer. He didn’t want to farm it — that’s why it had been leased. He is a sheep and beef farmer.

“I did keep it going but then I decided to better myself and learn more. I needed to work for someone else to get practical knowledge.”

Rachael is now an assistant manager on a larger scale farm and hopes she can take more experience back to the family farm in years to come. “I am learning a lot and would like to put it

in action one day. I was alone on dad’s farm and it was quite isolated. Now I am in a team of three and it’s nice having the workload divided between us and having company.

“Here we farm 480 dairy friesian cows and the farm is flat to rolling. We have got the young stock on an adjoining runoff and I manage them from when they are born until rising two-year-olds.

“I weigh them monthly, drench and vaccinate. My main concentration is on them and I don’t have to milk every day as it is important to give the young stock the best upbringing they can get.

“Part of their food is muesli and once they are off milk they go onto pellets and then palm kernel if the grass is lacking.

Then they are on grass until they are in the herd.

“We milk in a 36 aside rotary which is different to my 20 aside herringbone which I was in. We have herd homes in which we stand the cows off for a couple of hours a day in winter so they don’t

ruin the paddocks and ensure they get enough feed.”

Rachel says being a female in the industry is quite hard at times.

“Not necessarily everyday life on the farm, it’s more at field days or when I go out in the public as a dairy farmer. Some of the older generation are still catching up that girls farm too now.

“I went to buy fencing gear and was asking the man at the field days what sort I should get and prices and he totally ignored me. When my uncle came along he talked to him. Jeff said ‘I am not the farmer — this young lady is the farmer.’

“It is stereotypical and I don’t look like I have the strength. A lot of people are surprised when I do some of the things I do. The farm I am with is well known and being with them is helping me get acknowledged as a worker and I am gaining respect.”

important thing is to get the degree first.

“I thought it was boring paperwork and it doesn’t seem like it will help you but where I am now they use so much of that. If you don’t have all the strength, but have the knowledge, you can go far. The modern day farm uses a lot of science.

“It has been a huge learning curve and most of my support comes from guys that are farming. They often say they don’t know how I do it because they know how difficult it is.

“Being outdoors and living this life is awesome. It is a good routine and I love not being stuck in the office all day.

I love my job.”

ennifer originates from Derbyshire in England and the couple met when she was a crew member on a tall ship whilst Craig was in the marine trade.

They decided after travelling and working overseas and living in Auckland for some years to have a lifestyle change and brought the property.

“We started with a bare block of land which was scrubby and turned it around.

The pigs were our second investment after the house,” said Craig.

“We considered how to make the property work best and did a lot of research and found the large black pig fitted the climate and the style of our property. They are well natured towards

people and other animals and are very laid back.”

They are not a very common pig and the couple are the only registered breeders in Northland.

“You will see one or two around but not many — they are often mixed with other breeds. They are the best bacon and ham pigs. The meat is quite dark so it is more like a game tasting pig with a low fat content.”

They are a slow grower and take approximately three years to be fully grown. Craig says they are like a young teenager until they are two and a half years old.

“They can be quite mischievous and very annoying at times if they

get a bee in their bonnet,” he says.

“When we were first setting up, we would keep them behind makeshift fences and they would push them over and walk down to the neighbours and be adventurous. They are very inquisitive and like to explore. They’d walk down the road just to be naughty.”

Craig and Jennifer had many trial and error situations whilst setting up their farm.

“We had a few bad years of floods and through that we put in new electrics for the fencing and adapted to make things purposely for our requirements.

We hit a formula and it has worked well.

“It was a big learning curve as the information we had was 20-30 years behind, when they were in piggeries and weren’t roaming free.

“Now we can open a gate and they will follow us. We are kind of similar to a dairy farming style farm.”

They are an outdoor pig and sun tolerant which is good for Northland.

They don’t get sunburn or damage as their skin is pretty tough. They are very low maintenance and we give them medical checks for cuts and sores.

“They are an English breed, Devonshire large black and they were very popular pre-World War Two because of their high meat output. Then in the 1970s the white pig came along and people liked the colour of the white bristle as they grew faster and are leaner.

“There is a lot of work in black as they grow slow and their litters are quite small. They eat more grass so their meat is gamier, darker and richer where the white is lighter tasting,” says Craig.

“People compare the black to a bit of a wild pig.

They are great foragers and dig everywhere and they go after everything. We used them to clear the weeds out of the paddocks, then we would grade and reseed the land and turn it into grass. They can really rip the ground apart.”

The black pig has made a comeback since the couple started in 2007. The numbers are now up and their popularity has grown.

AN HONEST

T

here is nothing Holly Sandoe likes better than to be out on the farm with her dogs.

The 23-year-old was born on a landcorp farm in Mawheraiti which ran sheep, beef and deer on the west coast of the South Island.

Now she is living and realising her dream working on an established stud farm on the Tutukaka Coast in

Northland as a shepherd and general right-hand girl.

Holly found it difficult to break into the farming industry in the South Island and spent three years working on a vineyard, but her heart was set on working with animals. When she met her partner, 27-year-old Joe Edlington who hails from Whangarei, she decided to move north in search of something different.

“Farming is in my blood but I just couldn’t seem to get on a farm in the region. They wanted someone with 10 dogs or a huge amount of experience so I thought I had no chance.” She says farming in the North Island throws up different challenges to the South Island but she loves the lifestyle.

“Now I work for the Clements Family of Matapouri — Polled Herefords and Forest View Charolais and Poll Dorset breeders.

They have been breeding stud Hereford cattle for 40 years and introduced Charolais cattle which they have been breeding since the 90s. I’m mainly a shepherd, but I do the fencing, drench the animals and whatever else needs doing.”

She has a team of three dogs which consist of a four-year-old heading dog called West, a heading bitch named Fly and a beardie huntaway named Cash.

“Between the north and south everyone farms differently. I’ve learnt up here my mainstay dog is regarded more as just a handy dog because he can go out and shift a mob on his own.

Often people here only have one or two dogs not a whole team. The countryside is different too. I’m used to the alpine mountain ranges whereas up here it is a bit more tropical.

“People-wise, everyone still seems to be just as friendly and they all enjoy their cups of tea still.

“Both places offer up the same challenges — it’s just the rain up here and the snow down there.

“This is definitely what I wanted to do and it has been an awesome foot in the door. It has been a fantastic experience.

“I enjoy being out on the land. I didn’t want to be cooped up in the office or inside.

“I just wanted to get out there and do an honest day’s work.

“I’m passionate about my dogs, they are my best friends. I enjoy putting good genetics into the gene pool as far as the

I love it all. I love being out there in the rain and the sun.” She says there aren’t many young women shepherding in the area that she knows about but uses the Farming Mum’s NZ Facebook page, although she isn’t a mother, to network with other young farming women.

She advises any other young people wanting to get into farming to be proactive and approach their employers first without waiting for a job to be advertised.

“My partner and I went door-knocking because in our opinion going up to a farmer seems to speak a thousand words as well as just having the right attitude.

You have to think about the bigger picture. Sometimes you’ll get up and it’s

pouring with rain but if you don’t get out there and do it the farm isn’t going to turn over.

“To the females — don’t worry about what the fellas can do, women can do it too. You just have to have a little bit more smarts about you and be patient.”

Tim Harris knows what it means to be rescued by a Northland Rescue Helicopter.

A few years back Tim, who comes from a farming background, was testing out his new motocross bike at a trail bike ride through Pouto Forest near Dargaville. The experienced rider lost control and hit a tree head-first, suffering a multitude of serious and complicated injuries that included a fractured skull, broken arms, a broken femur and more.

The manager of Farmland’s Whangarei store admits he thought he was going to die.

“There had been a paramedic on the site for the day of the ride, they were able to help me but I lay there thinking I was done for. It was only when I heard the rotors of the helicopter I knew I would be ok. It is a weird feeling – that first half an hour, you lie there thinking you are about to die and then you hear the helicopter arrive and you know you are with the experts, you are safe and you are going to be ok aynow,” he says.

Due to the terrain and dense bush surrounding his crash location, Tim had to be winched from the accident scene into the helicopter hovering above, then taken to hospital for the urgent care he required.

It took him more than two years to learn to walk properly again following the accident, and he reflects back on what was an extremely stressful and painful time in his life.

“We are so fortunate to have this service in Northland; it covers some of the most rugged land in the country. Before my big accident, I had previously crashed off a bike and had broken some ribs – that day I had to be transported by ute to a doctors and then via ambulance to the hospital. It was a long and painful trip. I could not have imagined not having the rescue helicopter there the day of my big crash,” he says.

“I urge people to support Northland’s Rescue Choppers.”

There is a growing population shift into Northland, mainly driven by surging Auckland property prices, where cashed up residents are seeking greener pastures that are still within striking distance of the fleshpots of the metropolis.

Of course, there are many who are quite content to put their feet up away from the hustle of the city.

But with the cheque book in hand, getting the right lifestyle property has considerations that may well be new ground for prospective lifestylers, as well as for those providing the land — farmers who’ve perhaps subdivided.

For both vendor and buyer, there are some tips to make the transaction work smoothly.

GRASS ISSUE #2: When plants can’t access the food

Sorry.

The food wasn’t transported this week.

Imagine that. Healthy, nutritious food has been produced. It’s packaged up and ready to eat. It’s even close by.

But what good is that if you can’t get your hands on it?

Something like this happens every day on farms throughout New Zealand. Farmers spend hard-earned money on fertiliser that’s meant to feed and grow their grass. But a lot of the minerals within the fertiliser isn’t making it to the plants – they’re close by but not within reach.

The problem is transportation.

Before we explore the issue of nutrient transportation, we need to talk about the range of foods that plants need in order to thrive. It’s more than you think.

Grass needs 16 nutrients In spite of the fixation with NPK, grass actually needs a combination of 12-16 nutrients if it’s going to add healthy weight to your animals. Among them are Calcium, Magnesium, Nitrogen, Potassium, Sodium, Phosphate, Sulphur, Zinc, Boron, Copper, Manganese, Iron, and Selenium.

Some of these minerals directly impact plant growth.

Others help plants by feeding the soil microbes that convert nutrients into forms that plants can uptake. Some minerals condition the soil and suppress plant diseases while others promote root development.

It is the combination of these minerals, working together, that causes grass to grow in a nutrient-rich fashion.

But it’s not enough for these nutrients to be in the soil, or even around the roots (micro-organisms bring the minerals there).

Something has to transport the food up into the plant.

Calcium is the Transport Truck Calcium is known as the King of Minerals. That’s because it is the nutrient that transports all the other minerals up the roots and into the engine room of a plant.

Calcium is the mineral truck which is why plants and animals use it more than any other nutrient (by weight/ volume).

What else does Calcium do?

Apart from transporting nutrient food up into your grass, Calcium performs these other crucial functions: • Calcium enhances the uptake of many other nutrients, making them available to plants • Calcium promotes healthy root, stem and leaf growth.

• Calcium improves the soil environment for microorganisms • Calcium flocculates the soil • Calcium allows Nitrogen fixation to occur on the root nodules of legumes • Calcium is important for microbes – fungi and bacteria rely on calcium for their reproduction.

Can you have too much Calcium?

Applying too much Calcium can create as many problems as not having enough.

Calcium works in partnership with Magnesium to determine soil structure. Calcium loosens soil by flocculating soil particles together and increasing air space, while Magnesium decreases particle size causing less air space and tighter soils. You need a degree of space to allow for water, air, and nutrient movement and enough compactness to enable these crucial elements to be retained in the soil.

What happens if too much Calcium is applied? The soil structure becomes too loose allowing water to flow through unimpeded which washes vital elements away from plant root systems. It also causes soils to dry out more readily.

That’s why it’s important to have between 60-70% Calcium and 10-20% Magnesium base saturation to achieve the desired structure, depending on your soil type. When these levels have been reached, you will have provided the ideal environment for the soil biology to thrive.

The Calcium - pH Mistake Many farmers are familiar with Calcium and use it primarily to shift the pH levels of the soil. There are a couple of misunderstandings behind this practice.

The first mistake is thinking that pH alone is a good indicator of soil health. When you read the list of 16 key minerals that grass requires, you can see that soil health is more complex than pH. Soil and plant

(and animal) health is a complex, interconnected system that includes micro-organisms, organic matter, water and air flow, and the right balance of minerals to feed the whole soil food web.

The second mistake is thinking Calcium is the only mineral that lifts pH. In fact, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium all lift pH more than Calcium, 1.6x, 2x and 4x respectively. It is therefore important to have these minerals in the correct base saturation percentages to achieve the optimum 6.3 pH.

Dolomite’s slow magnesium release makes it the perfect fertiliser. As plant root acid secretions in the soil work on dolomite, its rate of breakdown accelerates in demand to plant requirements, releasing both magnesium and calcium in quantities sufficient to meet those requirements.

That’s something even a mixture of lime and MgO can’t do.

HUNTING, FISHING & OUTDOORS A warning for recreational fishers Summer is just around the corner and across the country boat owners and coastal fishers are readying their gear. Around New Zealand more than half-a-million anglers will head for the water looking for a good day’s catch — or quota.

But many will do so with a reduced number of fish on board due to a reduced quota system, and there is sobering news too in a new report on sustainability from The New Zealand Initiative, a think tank and research institute. The report says fishing is a valued pastime, a way to connect with

nature and tradition, and something that is integral to the Kiwi way of life.

But it adds, though many of the fish stocks important to recreational fishers are healthy, some are overfished or depleted and need to be rebuilt.

‘Continual increases in the demand for recreational fishing, along with competition with commercial fishing, have led to localised depletion and concerns about the sustainability of certain fish stocks.

‘The blue cod and scallop fisheries along the top of the South Island are a case in point. The cause of decline in catch levels is unknown, but are likely a combination of human and environmental factors. The situation is an indication of what might occur in other regions if the status quo management remains’.

the snapper fishery along the northeast portion of the North Island has had the daily bag limit reduced from 30 fish in 1985 to seven in 2014’.

The report says New Zealanders have the opportunity to avoid the fisheries problems that so often characterise other coastal nations’ recreational fisheries.

‘There is time to find workable solutions that enhance the recreational fishing experience now and in the future.

For this to occur, key challenges need to be addressed, including: ‘Several onshore fisheries demonstrate the need for ongoing decreases in daily bag limits and increases in the minimum legal sizes, if not seasonal closures in the future.

‘There is an underlying problem of complacency in managing recreational fisheries.

‘There is a current lack of fisheries policy leadership and technical competence to support it. This hands-off management approach is not sustainable’.

WHANGAREI A&P SHOW Show on the radar Awarding winning satirist, television identity and documentary maker, writer, stage and screen director, Te Radar — Andrew J Lumsden — will be on the microphone at the Whangarei A&P Show this year.

Chief announcer at the Show, Te Radar will be able to call on his experience from his programmes Off the Radar, and Radar’s Patch which won the 2010 Qantas Film and Television Award for Best Information/ Lifestyle Programme, as well as his other TV and radio experiences as he shares the happenings at the show live with show-goers over the loudspeaker.

Although a self-declared ‘failed gardener’ and recently trading his lifestyle block for the traditional Kiwi quarter acre, Radar is looking forward to the show and the mix of urban and rural activities that A&P shows throughout New Zealand bring together.

“I love an A&P show.

The people, the produce, the animals, all make for a great day out. There’s never a shortage of people to chat to about all manner of things, so if people want a chat then by all means they should say ‘hi’. Then there’s the food — a summer highlight for sure,” he said.

Te Radar is adding Whangarei’s One Epic Show Day to his long list of exotic travelling experiences. He’s visited beekeepers in Cuba, a potato park in Peru, where he sampled the national dish of guinea pig, eaten ‘local bird’ in

A history of rural support The Whangarei A&P Show Society has been around since 1877 when it was first known as the Whangarei Farmers Club.

Over the years many things have changed but the core principals have stayed the same, which are to promote and encourage an interest in the agricultural industry.

The Whangarei A&P Show is the largest show north of Auckland and has a proud history of promoting agricultural and pastoral interests.

The society is a registered charitable trust and made up of many dedicated volunteers. Their vision is to create a link between rural and urban lifestyles and to encourage understanding of the agricultural industry.

The society has a strong membership base and is run by an executive committee, who are duly elected officers from within the membership, along with the

society’s patron, who is a committed supporter of the organisation. The head of the board is known as the society’s president.

There is a vice president, immediate past president, a treasurer and up to four executive committee members.

The purpose of A&P shows are to promote, educate and support this industry through various means including commercial property management, administration and event management.

The annual Whangarei A&P Show brings people from all over the district and throughout the country to experience a real taste of the ‘country coming to town’ and has a reputation for its innovation, entertainment and mix of country and urban offerings.

Discovering Maori Bruce Graham first came to Te Wananga o Aotearoa in 2007 through home based learning to study Maori protocols.

Bruce says as a Pakeha, nearing the age of 70, it was important for him to be comfortable with Maori processes.

“I started reading about Maori culture and thinking about the land, then I found out about how the Maori planted their crops by the moon and I now plant my kumara facing east and have them in mounds.”

Bruce says like car mechanics, “in theory you know how to do something but then you take the bonnet off and you can get lost.

“I think Maori culture is like that.

You have got to get out of your comfort zone — especially being a Pakeha — you have got to go out there and humble yourself,” he says.

“I plucked up the courage and spent two nights on a marae and slept probably the best I have ever slept, with all the other guys snoring just as bad as me. Whether it’s therapy or not, I think I slept better than I do in my own bed.

“I have learned so much and feel comfortable that I know the cultural procedures now and if I don’t know, there is always somebody that will

help me. Maybe I have always felt a bit guilty that I didn’t know this stuff, and that I was letting myself down because I didn’t know my history. The ‘wairua’ or something floated by and I latched onto it and away I went.

The honest truth?

I felt honoured to be included in a group of 11 farmers and advisers who recently converged on the South Island for a study tour over a week.

Our main purpose was to observe better management systems on dairy farms, particularly in respect to biological and chemical usage of fertiliser. Our first destination was the Dairy NZ Field day at Back Track Farms in Methven, Canterbury. This is a three year study comparing the two systems, the biological farm being managed under the Albrecht-Kinsey system and the xhemical farm under the Ballance Agri-Nutrients approach.

We are currently on Year 2 and the outline of the trial was set out in the January 2014 Dairy Exporter magazine.

My mission was to gather all the information available to us, including the initial parameters, the Albrecht-Kinsey process and the approach of Ballance Agri-Nutrients as referenced from their website and general client practice in New Zealand. I have attended the last two annual Fieldays where the annual

scientific measurements have been presented. I have observed that to go to a single field day without looking at the whole picture, will give a totally different outcome to a person’s thinking if they are looking for an indicator of the honest truth.

Both parties that are involved with the fertiliser have full and open access to fertiliser tests, applications and the results of those applications. It was interesting to see that the biological side is producing generally more positive results. At the May Field Day at Back Track Farms the Albecht-Kinsey farm reported 500 kgs/ha more grass grown over the year than the chemical farm while using 43 units of Nitrogen/ha less. More clover growth, higher winter soil temperature, higher production per hectare, lower Somatic Cell Count and a higher Effective Farm Surplus were all points to be noted in support of the

Albrecht-Kinsey farm. On our recent visit to the Dairy NZ Field Day on October 6, the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was still showing positive gains over and above the chemical farm, namely higher soil temperatures, cows producing 2.4 kgs MS/cow/day compared to 2.2, 5.57 kgs MS/ha/day compared to 5.26 and 13 cows showing clinical milk fever compared to 35. An observation and comment made was that the higher production and better clean-up of pasture on the Albrecht-Kinsey farm was from better quality pasture because of higher amounts of clover.

In recent months the Albrecht-Kinsey system has been regarded as ‘pseudoscience’ by a leading soil scientist who also suggests that science has already proved that any innovation is just wasting tax payer’s money particularly relating to soil fertility. If this soil scientist is referring to the science which is being practised in New Zealand by Ballance Agri-Nutrients, then let’s take a look at them.

Their website is very impressive and there are a couple of very important scientific standards that they follow.

Many farmers in New Zealand would agree that their standard advice is to have a pH in the soil of between 5.8 and 6.0.

In fact their leading scientist had an article at the beginning of the 2015 Dairy season stating that if the pH is

5.9, then you are wasting your money putting on fertiliser that would increase it. Based on this information, I went to the May 2016 Field Day to find that the pH on the Ballance Agri-Nutrients farm was sitting at 6.3. Upon questioning them how they got that pH to 6.3, they replied that they had applied 2.5 tonne/ ha of lime. My next question of course was “Did they know what the pH was before they applied that lime?” They said that ‘Yes, it was 5.9 pH’.

A sceptic might suggest that Ballance Agri-Nutirents are changing their policies to ‘keep up’ with the positive advantages being shown by the AlbrechtKinsey system.

At the October 6 Field Day there was a positive move from the biological side to target a reduction in the amount of nitrogen applied yet again from 117 kgs/ha/year to around 100 kgs/ha/ year.

Discussions at that Field Day suggested that the chemical farm would follow suit. For Ballance to copy and follow the Albrecht-Kinsey system, then there will not be any significant difference which is, of course, what they are reporting.

My conclusion is that the AlbrechtKinsey system of soil fertility in this trial is leading science and Ballance Agri-Nutrients are learning a lot from it.

The next field day should prove interesting.

The value of effluent management Clean waterways are an ongoing rural concern highlighted by the fact that in Northland, tens of thousands of shoreline plantings have begun to make a big difference in water quality.

But the real key to quality long term lies with the farmer. On the agricultural front the value of animal effluent is a fact of life and has consequences for the bottom line. Effluent disposal also means effluent utilisation.

The by product, particularly of dairying, is a great fertiliser. It contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S) and trace elements that you’d normally pay for to have applied to pasture.

The average dairy herd of 250 animals produces the same amount of effluent as a medium sized rural town.

When spread over land and applied correctly the effluent of 100 cows can save thousands of dollars.

While it might be ‘liquid gold’ water troughs need to be protected from spray sources as well as waterways, where the rule is to keep the distribution 50 metres away.

Soil can only filter so much effluent and therefore application depths should be adjusted accordingly to reflect soil and weather conditions.

Too much effluent can kill pasture — especially where effluent has ‘ponded’ on the soil surface as well as polluting nearby streams and rivers as it runs off paddocks into waterways. Then there is ground water itself that must be protected, and that’s where local knowledge comes into play. Getting a certified assessor can be good practice,

particularly when effluent systems have been upgraded. You may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with.

Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report.

The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the irrigation network as well as a lot more.

It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. A report is then prepared for the farm owner or manager.

Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WoF’ assessors.

availability should ensure good returns for breeders, however competition for store stock is likely to reduce the margins for those finishing farmers,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief operating officer Cros Spooner.

While sheepmeat prices are uncertain, farmer reports indicate that it has been a very favourable lambing with high survival.

The Outlook predicts that the average farm profit before tax on sheep and beef farms in New Zealand will fall 13 per cent to $67,000 this season.

“This outlook sets the scene for a tough year and we’ll see farmers tightly control expenditure and focus on what can be optimised behind the farm gate to make the most of the season and be best placed for the next,” says Mr Spooner.

“With the completion of lambing and calving, the season is essentially set for farmers. Depending on their location, farmers will be implementing strategies to maximise returns. Facial eczema was widespread and farmers will be looking closely at climatic trends that might provide early warnings this season.”

Mr Spooner says much of the outlook depends on the value of the New Zealand dollar, which is at 71 cents against the US dollar at the moment, up eight cents on this time last year.

“This particularly impacts on sheep and beef farms because around 90 per cent of production is exported, and domestic meat prices reflect the export price.”

The weakness of the sterling since the Brexit referendum in June also has a negative impact because the UK normally accounts for 20 per cent of New Zealand’s lamb exports.

Much of the profit decline is the result of a fall in wool, lamb and sheep revenue and dairy grazing revenue. Cattle revenue is expected to be similar to last year with production up slightly but

a continuation of the USD at its current level would reduce cattle revenue.

Mr Spooner says international demand is expected to remain reasonable for beef this year, while tight sheepmeat supplies in Australia and New Zealand have potential to support prices with the unknown factor firmly centred on the exchange rate trend for 2016-17.

“In this context, any improvement in export prices is primarily expected to come from a weaker New Zealand dollar, but there is considerable uncertainty whether that will happen.”

Mating and lameness How is your preparation for mating going?

As this will be the focus for most farmers at the moment I thought it would be a good idea to talk a bit about lameness that is more specific to this time of the year — that is lameness in front feet as well as lameness in bulls. It is normal to get more lameness in front feet at this time of the year compared to other times. Cows are bulling and when they come off the ridden cow they land on their front feet. This produces more traumas to deal with than normal walking. There is not really any suspension in the front feet just like there is no suspension in human feet. People can create suspension by bending their knees, but a cow can’t do that with their front feet, which puts an enormous amount of pressure on the locomotion apparatus when they do land on their front feet.

Did you know that you could break your legs if you jump off the back of a truck and you keep your legs straight?

The amount of pressure that the average person puts on their feet by jumping off the back of a truck is about 1,000kg. So it is no wonder that you do major damage if you keep your legs

straight. In the same way there is a lot of force going on to the front feet of a cow when they ride another cow. A lot of the lameness in the front feet is ligament damage but we do get more hoof problems as well. This does not mean that this sort of lameness is purely caused by physical force. Again, the cow must have weakened claws from laminitis and then physical force will make the problem worse resulting in lameness. If it was purely caused by physical force, we would see a lot more problems because most cows do come on heat but in comparison there are not many going lame on their front feet.

We can’t stop cows from riding each other and we actually don’t want to stop it so we have to look at minimising the stress levels on them and make sure that our tracks and holding yards are stone free. Lameness in bulls is slightly different.

A few things are happening with bulls when they arrive on the farm and when they go with the cows. For one the environment is totally different —

different food, different routines and different lifestyle. I don’t think the testosterone levels will have an effect on laminitis but all the other changes currently do.

We do have some physical problems as well.

The wear pattern in animals that only walk on pasture is different from animals that walk on hard surfaces. When bulls all of a sudden walk on hard surfaces their hooves wear faster, and it will take

about six weeks for the bull to adjust the growth rate to the wearing rate so a lot of bulls end up with thin soles.

I think that the key is to have enough bulls to be able to rotate them and make sure that you use them in short bursts.

Too much? Traditionalists would say it surely is. But it’s too much in a way that transcends mere sanity.

First, the power. There has been an arms race at the top of the side-by-side world for some time now and this new Rotax mill represents Can-Am laying down the biggest cannon yet. Triple cylindered like the legendary Triumph bikes of old, but with the added whack of an intercooler turbo, this engine propels the lightweight Maverick X3 from 0–60 miles per hour in under 5 seconds. Once again, some would call it a case of overkill — but it generates some truly unhinged smiles.

The neat trick here, however, is sending that power to the ground without simply kicking up vast rooster tails of dust. Can-Am are also well aware of the fact that their tri-cylinder rocketship is likely to be deployed on some seriously gnarly terrain, so to avoid having drivers shaken to pieces they’ve bolted on some of the most serious Fox Podium shocks ever seen. With a massive 2-foot travel, these monsters soak up withering amounts of punishment. Coupled with a trophy-truck style chassis the whole

New chapter in a motoring legend

But there are few, even in such lofty company, which call up such a tradition as that of the United States’ most famous two-wheeled icon — Harley Davidson. With a history spanning over a century, this is one badge embraced by racers, weekend cruisers and rebels alike. From the original ‘silent grey fellow’ through to the ‘knucklehead’ V-twin of World War Two, through to the big powerful V-rod of the present day, the story of the machines from Milwaukee would seem to describe an upward curve of displacement and power. But that’s a stereotype which, in true rebellious fashion, Harley Davidson is set to challenge with its Street 500 range.

Stripped back and pared down to the essentials of city riding, the Street 500 is a pure Harley down to the nuts and bolts, but it is no big highway cruiser.

With a 500cc Revolution X engine, finely balanced frame and frugal fuel economy, this is a bike meant to take on the competition in a sector usually dominated by the Japanese motorcycle giants. It’s not the first Harley Davidson to go below the 883 Sportster in terms of displacement, but it is a new take on a classic design, reminiscent in many ways of classic British bikes from the golden age rather than the wicked custom Road Kings and Fat Boys which made the Harley name synonymous

Demand for experience Taratahi Chief Executive Arthur Graves says Taratahi hosted a wide range of visitors recently from eight different countries highlighting the demand for the Taratahi experience.

“Taratahi is seeing an increase in demand from all over the world for our authentic agricultural on-farm education model,” said Mr Graves.

Visitors from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Indonesia, China and the Solomon Islands were at the Wairarapa Campus recently and Taratahi was also visited by five Indian Parliamentarians. All had strong interests in agriculture and education, immediately seeing the business opportunities in working with Taratahi.

“The visitors came for a range of different experiences, from short visits to understand what we do and can offer — both on and off-shore. In the case of the Solomon Islands, a group of 10 teachers will learn various aspects of dairying over a period of four weeks,” Mr Graves says.

“Taratahi is recognised as experts in our field and delivers the latest in information, best practice, and practical skills in real life authentic contexts.

We are also leaders in providing other countries with the skills and expertise to create institutions and deliver courses that mirror what we do in New Zealand.”

Sixty students and seven staff from the English Language Training Organisation participated.

“This is the organisation’s second visit to us this year. Members of the group come from a range of countries and this year are here to focus on sales and marketing, agricultural/ horticultural practices and technology.

They are all representatives from the Ministries in their countries ranging from commerce, foreign affairs, planning and investment through to agriculture and rural development.”

Taratahi also hosted a delegation from the China Mengniu Dairy Company, one of China’s leading dairy companies and the Chinese Veterinary Medical Association. The group are in New Zealand looking at dairy farm performance and pasture based farming systems. This pilot project is part of the NZ/China Agriculture Growth Partnership and China is looking at New Zealand’s education and science and technology systems that underpin our farming systems. The next stage of the pilot is for staff members to come and study at Taratahi.

“The Mengniu visit in particular, is a very promising development,” says Mr Graves.
