A key to northern prosperity

A consortium of local authorities, ranging from Northland to the Bay of Plenty and further afield, has embarked on a project to try to reduce the cost of doing business, including forestry, farming and associated activities in the upper North Island.

The Upper North Island Strategic Alliance includes Whangarei District and Northland Regional Councils as well as the mayors or chairs of the Bay of Plenty and Waikato Regional Councils, the Auckland Council and the Hamilton and Tauranga City Councils.

It says the upper North Island is critical to the nation’s economic success and has released the ‘Upper North Island Freight Story’, a 50-plus page summary of critical issues facing the area in its bid to try to deliver freight efficiencies.

NRC Chairman, Craig Brown, says as well as the critical issues, the summary also contains a one-page regional wrap up for Northland identifying its current and emerging significant industries and infrastructure as they relate to freight.

“Forestry, including wood, timber and processing is the most significant current regional industry, followed by dairy, beef, avocado and kumara as both current and/or emerging industries. Manufacturing rounds out the third place.

“A nationally strategic road and rail

network is the most significant current regional infrastructure on a freight basis, followed by Northport, the Marsden Pt oil refinery and its associated pipeline.

“The regional summary also reveals Northland is New Zealand’s eighth most populated region with its $5 billion GDP equivalent to 2.6% of the nation’s total.”

More than 55% of the nation’s freight currently travels through the Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions which collectively generate more than 50% of New Zealand’s GDP. The combined freight volume in those areas is expected to double by 2035 and the summary identifies seven critical issues which it believes need to be addressed to deliver freight efficiencies.

These in turn should reduce costs and lead to both cheaper goods for consumers as well as offering a muchneeded competitive advantage to importers and exporters.

here are a number of activities on the remembrance calendar, and these included a recent re-enactment of the settlers’ river-side landfall from far off Bohemia in 1863.

Puhoi today is still essentially a rural community, with sheep, beef and dairy in the surrounding hinterland, as well as a number of lifestyle ventures, producing everything from honey to exotic fruits.

To their south, Auckland was growing and the need for building materials gave the newcomers an economic direction, as they battled to establish simple whares and rough gardens on the river banks.

There was a demand for timber for housing, shipbuilding and bridges and other structures. And Puhoi had kauri, which was also exported as the trees provided long lengths of easily worked, clean grained, wide planks. Puriri, kahikatea, matai, miro and totara were also a valuable resource that could be felled and sold, so timber became the lifeblood of the community.

A visit to today’s iconic Puhoi Hotel reveals a symphony of saws, bullock horns and slabs, echoing the stories of those early bushman.

The settlers were Roman Catholics and, as paralleled in most early New Zealand settlements, the church was a town centre piece and the first in Puhoi was finished in 1881 and still serves the community today.

Farming Academy students undertake a year’s full time study that is both within the classroom and outside. The college’s farm is a unique and valuable resource. Established in 1947, the self sustaining 500ha dairy, dry stock and forestry unit is a platform for training and practical experience. As well, it can demonstrate basic educational concepts.

Teachers and tutors link in depending on the farming calendar. “Students have the total use of farm and forestry, with opportunities for dairy/beef, horticulture, broad-based agriculture, and land, soil and water learning,” explains Diane Colson, farm manager.

(The college has worked closely with Telford over the last six years.) Year 12 student, Zane from Paparoa, wants to become a herd manager. He plans to return to Northland after Telford, while Samuel from Hokianga, wants to go to Telford and then work in the South Island dairy industry.

Not all academy students have rural backgrounds. The course introduction includes safe work practice, fencing, understanding soil types, vehicle machinery operation, and maintenance and livestock, progressing to

Around 10 acres of the Northland College farm is devoted to Sustainability Education.

“Basically it aims to help students know how they can live off their own land,” tutor, Eric Alexander explains. Students learn within a seed to food framework and the programme draws on both Maori and Pakeha ways of growing, harvesting and storing food.

Sustainability Education works in well with the farm. Its waterways, for example, have improved over the last six years under the Fonterra Clean Stream accord with 96% fenced off, providing the base for studies such as mudfish and fresh water crayfish preservation. Year 10 students plant the waterways. Furthermore, Year 12 Sustainability Education students through the Enviroschools Project Possum initiative have learnt trapping skills and use them at the farm, the fur going to a local trader.

Primary industry training is also growing elsewhere in Northland.

Industries unit standards, where agriculture, horticulture, and forestry are studied with a practical skills focus. Primary Industries Trade Academy students make field visits to relevant businesses including an avocado orchard, a native plant nursery, and honey, oyster and dairy farms. They have also planted trees with Forest Protection Services and visited logging operations — experiences which have enriched learning and will help decide study choices in their second year. In Year 12, Level 2 (introductory) Forestry is offered along with Primary Industries and Agricultural/ Horticultural Science and at Year 13 the option of the National Certificate in Wood Manufacturing (introductory) Level 2. Year 13 Primary Industries Trade Academy students have one day a week work placement where they will complete some of their practical unit standards.

Kerikeri High School’s Rural Studies is a new subject, taught at Level 2 and/or 3 towards a National Certificate in Agriculture using Telford work modules. Study options include General Agriculture, Horticulture, Equine, Dairy, Cattle, Sheep and Apiculture. Practical Gateway Work Experience Placement is one day a week with assessments in fencing, motorbikes and ATVs. The great support from local farmers has allowed students to look at Health and Safety on farm with Stock Handling planned.

Otamatea High School students generally undertake the Primary Industries Academy course over two years. The present Level 1 students are interested mainly in farming and forestry and there has been plenty of workplace skills learning and industry visits, including Florenz plant propagation, Jordyn Valley Fonterra Farm and Lupton’s sheep and beef farm, Hanarau. Level 2 students mostly work as independent learners and will shortly go on workplace experience and choose future trainings. Level 3 students not going to university will largely be on practical work to gain Level 3 credits. Students’ interests so far include the retail rural sector, environmental issues and possibly university.

At Whangarei Boys’ High School Years 9 and Year 10 students can study Horticulture and at Year 11 can gain a National Certificate in Primary Industries (Level 1) through Agriculture, Horticultural and Science achievement standards or alternatively Primary

Northland’s horticulture has an international reach, with a recent delegation from Papua New Guinea visiting Dargaville and the Kaipara kumara industry, to investigate opportunities for producing their sweet potato, ubi, on a commercial scale.

I

n West Papua, ubi is only sold in local markets with primitive methods of harvesting and, because it is inexpensive, it’s thought that those who eat it are ‘lower class’. “Over time people start to believe because it is inexpensive, sweet potato is an inferior food item and can make people who consume it dull and poor,” says author, Kiloner Wend, who was part of the visiting group.

White rice brought in by Indonesian migrants is seen as a sign of status even though its nutritional value is much less. The nonprofit organisation, Oxfam New Zealand, in partnership with YAPUM, a West Papuan not for profit organisation, is encouraging an ubi renaissance and what began as a pilot programme focussing on 55 farmers and their families has now expanded to involve more than 11,000 farmers and hundreds of hectares of land.

Trip co-ordinator and Oxfam’s East Asia associate director, Michael Riach, says the purpose is a cultural exchange with Maori and learning about commercial kumara production.

“We want to expose them to as many ideas as possible so they can take what they have learnt back to West Papua.”

NORTHERN FaRmiNg LiFEsTyLEs May 2013 The group stayed at the Oturei Marae and saw how Maori culture value kumara as well as touring local farms, and general manager of Delta Produce, Locky Wilson, showed them around the pack house where kumara is king. “We’re happy to share ideas and help production in West Papua,” says Locky. Delta Produce packs around 45% of New Zealand’s kumara production which is delivered throughout New Zealand.

Locky doubled as the West Papuan’s tour guide and showed them their processes, from when kumara comes in from the growers to being packed and ready to deliver to markets and supermarkets.

They learnt about grading the kumara with different sizes and quality used for different products and achieving minimum amount of waste with the smaller kumara used for frozen products like hash cakes.

They visited Dargaville kumara farms and among them was the Kumara Box where owner, Warren Suckling, showed them the latest in harvesting technology.

“They were really impressed with the GPS tracking system on tractors which enables farmers to drive perfectly in a straight line making harvesting easier.”

While West Papua has a greater variety of sweet potato, one they don’t have is the orange Beauregard kumara that farmer, John Adolph, specialises in.

He has been kumara farming for around 30 years and began producing Beauregards around a decade ago which has proven popular with kiwis.

“They now occupy around 30 to 40 per cent of the market.”

He was happy to share ideas showing the group around his farm, adding, even though kumara is valued in New Zealand, farmers still come up against obstacles.

“Our tonnage wasn’t great this year because of the drought and last year we had the exact opposite problem, it was too wet — it was like yin and yang.”

They also learnt how to market kumara with different branding for supermarkets and smaller outlets, as well as best business practices including recycling water to reduce costs.

All of this seems like a huge challenge to the poverty stricken nation with political unrest, but Kiloner who also works for Oxfam says it’s the beginning of turning a dream into a reality.

“This is a start of a dream becoming real” Among the group was the head of agriculture for the for the Jayawijaya District, Paulus Sarira, who says he is open to supplying funds to Oxfam’s Ubi Project.

Weather is an uncertainty that both countries could relate to but on the whole the group were highly impressed and eager to return to West Papua to begin applying what they have learnt to their sweet potato industry.

Muscle pain is one of the most common complaints.

This may be anything from statin myopathy to PMR or Fibromyalgia. Statin myopathy is of the most common forms of muscle pain. This is a collection of muscular and other symptoms caused by side effects of commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering statin medication. Think of CoQ10 like the spark plugs and exhaust system in your car engine. Without a good spark a petrol engine will not run properly. With insufficient CoQ10 the trillions of little engines (mitochondria) in your muscle cells will not produce enough energy and you feel that as general fatigue and weakness, stiffness and pain in your muscles.

Low CoQ10 levels can have a disastrous effect on muscles. Alarmingly, the highest levels of CoQ10 are found in heart muscle. If you think you have these symptoms you should talk to your doctor as sometimes a change in medication or doses can help. I recommend everyone on statins take 100mg of high grade CoQ10 to compensate and there are an increasing number of doctors who suggest CoQ10 supplementation to counter statin myopathy.

For those on statins my first goal is to prevent or reduce any statin myopathy but just as importantly to create a full cardiovascular nutrition programme. I have a lump sum of money, what are my investment options?

If you’ve sold your business or farm, have received an inheritance, or recently retired, then congratulations – this can be a great catalyst for ticking some items off your bucket list and provides an opportunity to plan and prepare for you and your family’s financial future.

Managing a large sum of money can also mean some tricky decisions. The fun bit is planning that holiday you’ve always dreamed of, choosing your new car, or treating loved ones to that special gift.

After that, it’s time to work out the best way to safeguard the future and not fritter the money away.

For someone nearing retirement, it might be prudent to consider choices such as investment grade bonds or income funds. And if they’re keen to invest in property too, then a listed property trust rather than direct property ownership could be more suitable.

The theory being if one asset class is under performing, there is less risk that your entire portfolio will be affected.

As soil temperatures and sunlight hours drop, plants have less energy for growth.

We can boost growth with fertiliser N, but plants struggle to turn the N into growth.

For example, in the warmer seasons, a kg of N as granular urea will produce 10–20kg of additional dry matter. In winter this drops to as low as 4–8kg, which is often uneconomic The way to maximise responses in winter is to minimise the energy the plant needs to expend to get fertiliser N into the plant, and in a form it can turn into protein as easily as possible. Plants, and this includes pasture plants, can take up urea directly through the leaves, provided it is in liquid or solution form.

The application rate must not be excessively high as this can cause leaf burn as the leaf surface dries out during the day. It is very important to include a urease inhibitor — otherwise urease enzyme on the plant leaves can result in much of the urea being converted to ammonia gas and lost to the atmosphere.

Once inside the plant, urea can be processed into ammonium-N and then amino acids — the building block of protein — with less energy consumption by the plant than pulling nitrate-N up through the roots and then reducing the nitrate to ammonium-N.

Innovation is also the name of the game for this year’s Rural Bachelor of the Year contest.

In an ‘Amazing Race’ style twist to the competition, entrants will be flown to a secret location on Monday June 10, and need to make their way to Fieldays by 5pm the following day, stopping in specific towns along the way to complete various tasks.

“Our bachelors must be prepared to roll their sleeves up and get into whatever is required plus be up for some mystery and fun.”

Once they are back the bachelors will take part in four days of events, testing their rurally derived skills, No.8 wire innovative attitude, and good all-round charisma in a number of competitive heats.

“While the requirements and topics of the finalist events are kept under wraps until then, we can divulge that they are largely agricultural based but will have a few fun twists thrown in to challenge the character of our rural boys.”

Small size, big value, huge street appeal

Mitsubishi’s new Mirage has been an instant hit in New Zealand, and that’s not all down to the retro chic appeal of its badge.

Because while a large number of us remember owning or driving in the old Mirage (a bit of a 1980s’ classic, in its own way), the latest reincarnation of Mitsubishi’s flagship small car ticks all the boxes, paring away the fat to leave a simple, functional, and surprisingly fun little vehicle for a price well within the reach of those who would usually only buy second hand.

Take the interior, for example. Here you’ll find ample room despite the car’s diminutive footprint, and auto essentials like air conditioning, a stereo with simple to master controls, and even hands free connectivity for your mobile. But you’ll find no hint of excess — the Mirage looks tidy and slick, with glossy black and silver accents, but it’s not a mobile appliance store. The controls are so simple and well laid out that it becomes instantly comfortable to reach for the indicator or the gear shift, and visibility all round is great, meaning that backing up and parking are a breeze.

Now a solution to the problem of soil compaction has been discovered. Is your farm cow-friendly?

The summer is long gone. Not too many hot days left anymore, and there is much more rain instead — to the relief of many around the country. I can’t believe the season is nearly over.

Cows seem to be more convinced than I am on this point! The end of the season is certainly putting more stress on them. They are becoming lethargic, walking to and from the cow shed seems a big task for them. This is one of the stresses that have a big impact on the hoof health of your animals.

Ask any farmer who has moved to a 16-hour milking programme and they will tell you how the cows change. They have more energy and they are livelier.

That is just a clear sign that cows are not machines and that they function differently under different circumstances.

To me, it seems that we often farm in a way where we make the cows work with us and they often have to put up with whatever situation we put them

in, rather than us trying to change things to work with the cows.

When I go out to a farm for a consultancy visit, I am very interested in the cow comfort aspect of farming.

I look at things like walking time and milking time. It is very important to treat the cows correctly when handled.

Pushing cows is not the right way, we all know that.

Why do some farmers have problems with cows being pushed too hard? But what if cows just don’t want to walk? You have to push them just to get them moving. It seems like the more we push our cows, the more they work against us.

It is much better to get a cow walking by “dangling a carrot” in front of them instead of using a whip.

Is there much difference in the amount of physical force between the two ways of doing it? The difference will be very minimal, certainly not enough to cause the damage that we see in the hooves. The stress levels,

however, are much higher when cows are being pushed.

So, when we want to minimise lameness we need to minimise stress on the cows.

What can we do to make our farms and management styles more cow friendly? I guess, in order to answer that question, we need to know what a cowfriendly environment looks like.

I think that when a cow is spending 21 hours a day in a paddock with a wellbalanced diet, and a plentiful supply thereof, we are making a good start.

Why nutrient inputs demand a rethink There are a number of certainties we all live by and right now the two that spring to mind are — future weather patterns cannot accurately be predicted, and dry spells are eventually followed by significant rain.

A philosophy that we adopted years ago and is the basis of all sound longterm wealth building programmes is that buying quality results in a much better long term outcome than buying the cheapest.

nitrogen as ‘organic’ resulting in half as much growth is demeaning to both those peddling the message and farmers at large.

Farmers are a savvy bunch of people and though they might not wish to publicly admit it they are environmentalists at heart. It’s perhaps the advice they have received from those they trust that has resulted in confusion, misunderstanding, and poor buying decisions.

With 9,400kg/ha of nitrogen in the top 30cm of the soil and around 200kgN/ha plant available at any one time there is no requirement for fertiliser N, either now or at any time in the near future.

The Berryman property at Otakiri near Edgecumbe will have grown in the twelve months to the end of April, close to 14 tonne of dry matter per hectare, down from 18.4 tonne last year.

The district average last season was 14.8 tonne so this season provides us with a better understanding of the frustration by farmers in the district, even when weather is favourable. Independent analyses from the last two seasons showed the Berryman property to be growing 30% more feed than district average.

With Nitrate N levels being a good indicator of the levels of other nutrients being leached the on-going requirement for other major growth nutrients also steadily decreases. This autumn’s nutrient input contains calcium, magnesium, live fungi and bacteria along with boron to also ensure maximum energy in every mouthful of feed during winter.

Chinese inventory is still high following their New Year break but matched with high demand, log inventory is steadily falling. The onset of the hot season may be the catalyst to reduce the Dragon’s appetite and when sentiment goes south so might the prices. But at the present time forest owners in New Zealand continue to ride the wave.

Closer to home, sawmills have been forced to increase log prices to match, which will be tough for some, but this may increase sawmillers’ collective resolve to hold onto recent increases in sawn timber prices.

If you are fortunate enough to be harvesting your woodlot right now, the prolonged dry is your best friend and you will be impressed with your returns.

owners’ calendar last month was the Forest Owners Referendum on whether a compulsory levy should be introduced of 27 cents per tonne or cubic metre for all forest products removed from a ‘qualifying’ forest. A ‘qualifying’ forest is owned by a forest owner (or entity) with more than 4Ha of forest and harvests wood products from the forest. Wood products will mostly be logs, but also include binwood, residue and wood chips. A ‘yes’ vote by more than 50% of forest owners will be the mandate for the Ministry of Primary Industries to legislate the levy under The Commodity Levies Act (1990) which enables an industry organisation to seek a compulsory levy on all producers of a commodity. Their are restrictions on how that money may be used and trading

or commercial activities are excluded.

To continue the levy beyond six years, another referendum is required.

The result of the referendum will be interesting, as those organisations promoting the levy already own 80% of the forests but represent only 25% of the participants. The levy will be administered by a group to be formed called the ‘Forest Growers Levy Trust’ (FGLT).

If the levy does come into effect, the first challenge for the FGLT will be to enforce and collect the levy. This is sure to be an expensive exercise and may consume a big chunk of the levy income.

The other challenge will be to demonstrate the real benefits that accrue to forest owners who are paying the levy when some of those benefits already exist and may have been funded by the Government.

On the ETS front, New Zealand’s withdrawal from Kyoto changes the dynamic of this market and the sentiment is firmly buy and hold. On the road again

The annual migration of the New Zealand dairy industry is coming round again with two to three busy weeks which herald the start of the new dairy season, with farms changing hands and share milkers moving on to new contracts.

Dairy herds will also be moving on to new pastures, but in all likelihood, movement will be somewhat restricted after the prolonged drought, which has yet to see any real recovery of feed stocks as winter closes in.

This has been recognised by the fact that the drought relief for the farming sector will stay in force until September, when it’s hoped that spring growth will see things settle back to something like normal.

But drought or not, the sheer weight of the dairy industry, with more cows specialist insurance advice than people in New Zealand makes and advocacy: Gypsy Week a significant event.

councils, as stock take to the road in trucks, or in local cases, to the road on the hoof.

Stock transports are being reminded to keep the highways and byways clear of effluent discharge or spillage.

Stock should be ‘stood’ overnight, before being embarked.

Road transport officials point out that effluent from trucks can create hazards for motorists, especially at this time of the year, when stock movements are intensified.

Waterways can also be fouled with effluent washed into them.

‘Truck drivers should ensure their effluent storage tanks are emptied before each load and regularly use stock truck effluent disposal sites’, states a Federated Farmers’ advice leaflet.

As well as animals, hundreds of households may be on the move as well, as being a sharemilker taking up a new contract means having all of your household possessions in a truck with your stock not far behind.

Federated Farmers has issued tips to smooth the way over Gypsy Week.

These include: Standing cows off green feed for a minimum of four hours and up to 12 hours to empty themselves, instead, feeding them straw, hay or baleage with free access to water.

Booking stock transport in advance and asking for an estimated time of arrival to allow cows to stand off for the recommended minimum time.

Checking the transport operator has a plan for the journey, covering effluent disposal sites and adequate stops and rest periods, particularly for cows on long journeys.

Talking to the farmer at the other end about when to expect stock to arrive.

Before you pack up, back up Heading to greener pastures this Gypsy Day? Before you pack up your computer, whether it’s an old faithful desktop or a more portable notebook, have you backed up its hard disk drive? If the answer is no, ask yourself what impact losing the information stored on your device would have on your family and your business. There’s probably photographs of long forgotten family events, important financial records and a to-do list this upcoming season.

Before packing up grab yourself an external hard disk drive — about twice the capacity of your machine’s hard drive is ideal. Drives from the likes of manufacturers like Western Digital cost a hundred or so dollars and come with their own automated backup software. If the enclosed instructions aren’t clear try Googling the make and model online with the word backup.

The last three versions of Windows, Vista, 7 and 8, also come with their own backup software. Find out how to use it at microsoft.com and search for the word backup.

If you’re running Windows XP you should consider buying a new machine before next April when Microsoft ends support for the operating system by no

longer providing security patches over the internet.

It’s a good idea to have more than one backup in case your hard disk drive fails. Don’t rely on USB drives, which are small and can be easily lost, or CD-ROM or DVD-ROM discs, which can be scratched and have a reasonably short life.

Thai Duck Massaman Curry

1 Duck cut into cubes 400ml can of light evaporated milk 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 large brown onions, sliced 1 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons curry paste 500ml chicken stock (or water) 2 cinnamon sticks 2 bay leaves 1 kumara sweet potato, chopped 1 tablespoon tamarind paste or lemon juice 1 tablespoon fish sauce 1 tablespoon grated palm sugar 1 tablespoon roasted peanuts Sliced spring onions, for garnish

Method

Massaman Curry Paste Ingredients

1 teaspoon ground coriander seeds 2 teaspoons ground cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cardamon seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 2 sticks lemongrass (inner white part only), finely sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 4 cm piece ginger, peeled and chopped 1 tbsp shrimp paste 10 large dried chillies, soaked in warm water (remove seeds if you do not want a very hot curry) Method: Combine ground spices (coriander, cumin, cinnamon, cardamon, cloves) in a frying pan and stir over medium heat till fragrant. Place all remaining ingredients together with the roasted spices in a food processor and blend into a smooth paste.

1. Fry onions in a pot with the oil until brown.

2. Add the duck and salt and cook until meat is browned.

3. Add massaman curry paste and 1/2 can of evaporated milk and cook for 5 minutes on low heat.

4. Add stock, remaining evaporated milk, cinnamon sticks and bay leaves and cook for 1 hour.

5. Add kumara, tamarind, fish sauce, and palm sugar and cook till meat and kumara is tender (add a little water if needed).

6. Garnish with peanuts and spring onions, and serve with rice.

Sun Damage Things you didn’t know about sun damage: Sun damage is believed to be responsible for almost 80% of the skin changes attributed to the ageing process.

Hypo pigmentation is when the skin becomes lighter, hyper pigmentation is when the skin becomes darker, and is often referred to as freckles, sun, age or liver spots. UVB causes redness on the surface of the skin (think B = burning) UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and causes DNA damage (think A = ageing) Most women know that pregnancy can cause dark pigmentation to appear on the face (this is often referred to as the ‘mask of pregnancy’) but did you know the contraceptive pill can also cause these changes too? If you’re concerned that your pill may be causing pigmentation, talk to your doctor.

The most common cause of hyper pigmentation is the sun. Wear sun block every day to prevent dark patches from appearing and to prevent any spots worsening. Hyper pigmentation can be caused by various medical conditions and medications; however treatments such as microdermabrasion, photo rejuvenation (VPL) and topical treatments can still prove effective.

What are the signs that skin has been damaged by the sun?

Childhood freckles are the first change in the skin that reflects sun damage. Although we think of them as cute they are in fact the skin’s protective response to UV light from the sun. As we age the freckles get less cute and a bit more like blotches. In some people
