New Zealand Farm Environment Trust’s (NZFET) newly-appointed general manager, James Ryan, is poised to take over the reins when David Natzke steps down in October.

As a former policy manager with DairyNZ, Mr Ryan has strong agricultural networks. School students help with stream enhancement

A class of year 8 students from Huntley School near Marton recently joined Horizons Regional Council staff and local landowners to plant 500 trees and shrubs along the Koitiata Stream near Bulls.

The project, which is part of a longterm ‘whole of stream’ restoration vision for the OB Group dairy farms near Santoft, is being led by landowners Stuart Taylor and John O’Brien. The area is now fenced off from dairy cattle.

Plants are being added to improve the habitat for eels and native fish species which include inanga fish and bullies.

These species have been found at some sites along the stream.

“It is great to have the help of Huntley School, Fonterra and Horizons as we take responsibility for protecting and enhancing our waterways,” said Mr Taylor.

Horizons freshwater coordinator Clare Ridler said planting alongside the stream provides shade and keeps the water cool over summer, providing the ideal environment for native fish.

“Teaming up with Huntley School is a great way to get the plants in the ground whilst also giving the children a chance to understand freshwater issues and solutions.”

Huntley School teacher Anne GardinerTaylor said they were pleased to support the project during their service week.

The school’s service week provides pupils with opportunities to support a range of projects or activities to give back to the community.

“It was really positive to see the children getting their hands dirty for the local community and environment,” she said.

“The experience has also helped the students gain a better understanding of why we plant along waterways and how it helps improve natural habitats for our native fish and water quality.”

Although Stephanie Shaw was a born and bred townie, she always yearned to be a farmer, live off the land, and grow her own food.

S

tephanie, her husband Michael, and their children were living in Christchurch when they took up several opportunities to farm-sit on several lifestyle blocks in Canterbury. As she homeschooled her four children, the family was able to stay on some farms for weeks at a time.

It was on one of these farms that Stephanie first became interested in goats. It was also during one of these stays in the country that she was introduced to hand-milking Saanen goats.

“I have to say it was love at first sight,” said Stephanie. “There was just something so lovely about this gorgeously intelligent animal that you could milk in a very organic, low-tech way, and have gorgeous milk as a result.”

Although Stephanie’s first milking efforts left her with a small yield and aching fingers, she practised, watched friends milking and read books.

Around this time, Stephanie’s second son had developed an allergy to homogenised milk which led her to search out goat milk from a local source.

Stephanie has long held an interest in goats “We were living in Belfast, on the edge of town and a lovely old Dutch lady had a herd of Saanens that she milked and sold the milk,” said Stephanie.

The following year, Stephanie’s father moved off his 10-acre block and asked Steph and her family to move in, take care of it and try out the farming lifestyle.

A sable Saanen/Alpine cross buck kid, used to sire all the kids born the next spring, also arrived.

Stephanie said the Alpine breed can be milked for consecutive seasons without the need to freshen in between.

As well as the goats, Stephanie’s lifestyle block also became home to a range of other livestock.

“I had done lots of reading around small farming systems, mixed grazing, cross-grazing and rotational feeding in regard to optimising pasture health and animal health.”

Stephanie was convinced that goats had a valid position within the farming landscape, dealing with weeds and encouraging desired grass species in paddocks by eating out competing grasses.

A job opportunity for Stephanie’s husband, Michael, meant the family moved off the land completely as they shifted north to Marton.

“We sold all our stock and I resigned myself to having no livestock, except chickens which were an absolute minimum requirement for my sanity,” said Stephanie.

Three years later, the couple bought their own house with a half-acre section.

Stephanie also had access to a further eight-and-a-half acres surrounding the property. She didn’t waste any time and soon bought two goat kids.

“One was a Saanen from a goat dairy farm in the Waikato and the other was an Alpine from a local friend.”

Unfortunately the surrounding land ended up being leased out so Stephanie had to rehome her goats.

Two years later the opportunity came up to buy the land.

“As it happened we had just been left some money so jumped at the chance.”

Two doe and two buck kids soon arrived, along with an old wether.

“This was the start of rebuilding our herd.”

A few of the goats at a mineral station Stephanie said although she has had a house cow in the past, she prefers the docility, ease of handling and companionship of goats.

“I have only milked to our need, so have share-milked with kids and generally then only milked once a day.”

Rebuilding her herd genetics are Stephanie’s short term plans, focussing on improving the characteristics with particular attention to hard feet and good udders. Making and selling cheese and soap from goat’s milk is also on the agenda.

Stephanie and Michael have named their property Tordorrach Farm after the Shaw clan’s ancestral castle in Scotland.

“I hope that through getting our farm visible, others will see the value of goats in their farming systems and not just as fence-jumping, tree-destroying pests.”

ollowing a chat with his nephew about Lowline cattle, Mike set off to investigate the breed and travelled throughout the North Island looking at livestock.

Mike said at that time a cow and calf were selling for between $4,000–5,000 plus GST. “I was able to buy a three cows and some good calves. It all started from there, I then imported top-line bull semen from Australia and developed my pedigree bloodlines,” he said.

Semen straws imported every couple of years ensured the herd produced the best calves from show-winning Australian bulls.

Mike and his partner, Kathryn McDowell, are now currently running 155 Lowline cattle, both pedigree and crossbred. The herd, which includes 75 breeding cows and 19 bulls, are spread

Mike said the Manawatu’s climate suits Lowline cattle. “We tend to have a very wet, late winter and a very dry autumn. The Lowline are well suited for both aspects as they hold their form well in the dry as well as cope with the wet.”

have found the breed’s small size helps maintain the pasture quality in wet conditions.

“Their small hoofprint is very good for the Manawatu flood plains, in winter they do not cut the ground up as much as the big white face beef or normal Angus,” said Mike.

research produced from Massey University established a genetic link to the condition.

Mike and Kathryn have carefully bred their cattle to eliminate this.

“Another problem we have had is Blackleg bacteria. This is secondary to the susceptibility of flooding in our area but now we have identified this problem, we can inoculate against it. This is now done every year,” said Mike.

The breed’s quiet nature and ease of management appeal to Mike and Kathryn.

“All our animals are selected on temperament,” said Mike.

The couple are also impressed by the breed’s proven grass to meat conversion of any beef animal as shown by the Trangie experiment.

This research project, which commenced at the Trangie Research Centre in New South Wales, Australia in 1974, discovered three separate species of Angus: the Lowline species of Angus along with Highline Angus and normal Angus.

Mike and Kathryn usually sell their cows to Land Meats in Wanganui. Bulls are sold to AFFCO in Feilding.

“Further to this, some dairy farmers have shown interest in using Lowline bulls over their heifers as they drop a small calf and solve many calving issues. There is research from Australia to show that Lowline/dairy calves have a gestation period of up to 10–14 days earlier than other cattle,” said Mike.

Mike’s own experience is a four to five-day earlier gestation period with Jersey cows. Their Lowline beef has also impressed chefs at the Aberdeen

“We are especially thankful to Guy Sargent, owner of Aberdeen’s, for his help and encouragement in establishing our beef in the restaurant trade.”

Mike decided to enter this year’s Steak of Origin competition with a 30-month-old steer.

“His temperament was great and he was seven-eighths Angus and oneeighth Jersey which had taken some time to breed.”

Although he didn’t make the finals, he was close to the other entrants. “I was very encouraged to continue as I feel I am on the right track to winning. Further to this, it is about growing a consistent

quality of beef for the market.” Mike believes he is near to achieving this.

“Ideally we want to have cross-bred animals for our commercial stock which will include Lowline mixed with Jersey, Murray Grey and Angus Pure.”

Mike also enjoys training their cattle for shows and has a special interest in senior bulls.The couple will carry on running a small number of Lowline cows and 15 bulls for the continued improvement of bloodlines in their pedigree stock.

These bloodlines will be carried into their commercial herd.

“We are aiming to improve the organisation of our enterprise to continue to develop outstanding beef animals,” said Mike.

Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival set to delight Garden gates across the region will open to reveal the sights, scents and sounds of spring during the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival.

Now into its 12th year, the festival has 66 listings which include 50 gardens, 11 places of interest and five stops on a vintage machinery trail.

Thirteen new gardens have joined the festival and four are returning after a break.

Festival secretary Anne Clough said the committee has released the festival’s new motto ‘Real Gardens for Real People’ this year.

“It captures the ethos of who we are and what we are about.”

All gardens included in the festival are assessed by an independent committee team prior to the event. This ensures the gardens have reached the required standard. The festival now gets more than 32,800 garden visits to the gardens and other places of interest each year.

“Visitors come from all over Taranaki, New Zealand, Australia and even further afield,” said Anne.

Programmes are available from information centres and most garden centres. The programmes are colour-coded to provide readers with information at a glance. With full addresses and contact details included

In many cases, prostate cancer is slow growing and having it won’t affect you, but in some cases, the cancer is more aggressive and can spread to your bones, liver and lungs.

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA).

CROP & PASTURE PREP Optimise pasture management Pasture first is a DairyNZ initiative geared at encouraging farmers to use their pasture first — an increasingly important factor in farming through the current reduced milk price.

Past and current grazing experiments inform how best to manage pasture — and shows in a high milk price year that the first 85 percent of the operating profit comes from the base pasture, 10 percent from nitrogen fertiliser use, and the last five percent from supplements.

Past grazing experiments by Dr Arnold Bryant and the Ruakura team revolutionised the way pasture was managed through winter and spring.

Following a series of ground-breaking trials in 1999, Mr Bryant and his colleague John Penno set up the 1.75t MS/ha trial, aimed at achieving 1750 kilograms MS/ha and investigating the costs.

It measured the increase in per-cow and per-hectare milk solids production when total feed supply is increased by bought-in supplements and/or nitrogen

fertiliser. A range of combinations were used to increase pasture growth with N supplements bought in and an increased stocking rate to use the extra feed.

The results indicated it was uneconomic to add extra feed to a system with good pasture utilisation, unless the stocking rate was increased and cheap feed available.

DairyNZ research and development general manager Dr David McCall says the pasture/supplementary debate has been polarising and confusing for some farmers.

“The pasture first concept is about managing pastures regardless of farming system. Modelling has shown that getting pasture management right is worth over $300/ha, even at today’s milk prices.” In the 1.75t MS/ha trial, the control farmlet (no N applied) was

producing 1000kg MS/ha. Using N fertiliser allowed an additional 200kg MS/ha to be produced and supplement use (maize silage) with increased stocking rate added another 400kg MS/ha.

Dr McCall has re-analysed the trial results with today’s costs and milk prices. When comparing these differing farm systems at $7.00/kg MS, 85 percent of the operating profit came from pasture, 10 per cent from N fertiliser use and five percent from supplements.

“Clearly it’s more important to get things right in something that contributes 85 percent of the profit, before something that contributes the last five per cent,” says Dr McCall.

“When calculating at $4.00/kg MS, N use only increased the operating profit by two percent and the supplement groups made a loss.

“This suggests farmers need to focus on optimising pasture management and be very careful about adding costs that may not give economic returns.

The mystery of irrigation Irrigation is the black art of replacing water which has been removed from the ground by evapotranspiration (ET) through plants. This is part of how plants ingest their nutrients.

Important points to know: NIWA have ET rates for your area, check their website. It will show rates as a graph through the year, summer obviously higher but ET is also determined by the atmosphere’s ability to absorb the moisture, so it is higher on windy days due to higher dispersal.

Every millimetre of rain you need to apply daily requires 10,000 litres/ha, so if ET hits 5mm you need at least 50,000 litres every hectare, every day. That’s if you want the plant to really grow, not just look green.

You need to match ET rate plus allowance for percolation through the soil (over irrigation) plus loss during irrigation, minus rainfall (if any).

ET rates follow quite closely to available moisture rates so it is important to begin irrigating early enough as the plant growth will have checked by the time you notice it.

Woody plants have a higher ET rate than leafy plants so kale ET will likely be more than chicory. Admittedly plants with deep roots will hang on longer, mostly in heavy soils but in the end need still water replacement.

Irrigating methods are just that, management tools, don’t be fooled by the fancy promises, they can’t make your plant excel with less than ET rate —

assuming you are trying to hold constant moisture in the ground. Beware of stories telling you that a system allows you to get away with less application.

They do exist but also require electronic monitoring and experience on the operator’s part.

Keep water droplets as large as practicable. This is where you can save some water. Despite public perception, small sprinklers can easily have the same losses as large sprinklers, it’s just not so visible. The law of physics tells us when you expose water to warm air it evaporates. Large bodies of water (large droplets) have a greater mass to surface area than small bodies, so fine mist tends to evaporate more — keep the nozzle size up/nozzle pressure down, within reason!

There’s no free lunch with irrigation, either you can have a cheap system with lots of running costs and maintenance or a more reasonably priced system but with better application evenness, better growth patterns, and easier and less time consuming management and

maintenance. Often the principal cost differences between the two are not proportional to the results.

New regulations aimed at improving the standard of care for bobby calves have now been in effect since last month, with the Ministry of Primary Industry recording that during the peak of the calving season for dairy farmers, improvements in calf welfare have been noted across the supply chain.

The regulations which took effect on August 1 were part of an accelerated programme focussed on further improving the standard of care for bobby calves, a programme which was highlighted by media exposure earlier this year, which showed abuses in the industry both at a farm pickup point and in a slaughter yard.

“Everyone across the supply chain has a role to play when it comes to the welfare of bobby calves. What we have seen and heard so far is promising and a majority of people are following the rules, but we have also noticed some people still need to change their practices to ensure all regulations are met,” said MPI’s director of Verification Services, Chris Kebbell.

“We’d like to acknowledge the majority of farmers, transporters and processors who have always cared for young calves and are meeting the regulations with ease, but we remind the minority that they have an obligation to care

The four regulations introduced this season include fitness for transport requirements, a maximum transport duration of 12 hours, the prohibition on killing calves by blunt force to the head and the prohibition of transporting calves by sea across the Cook Strait.

These regulations provide MPI with

additional tools to respond to those who are not meeting their obligations for the welfare of calves.

“The key area we have noted that could be improved by the minority is ensuring calves are fit for transport.

Farmers should not rely on transporters to make the decision on fitness for transport, as farmers are in the best position to know the animals.”
