Manawatū dairy farmers win national awards

Manawatū dairy farmers took out top honours at the recent 2024 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards.

James and Debbie Stewart, Will Hinton and Kali Rangiawha, and Isabella Panettiere were all recognised for their achievements during the gala dinner held at Coronet Peak in Queenstown.

Will and Kali won this year’s Share Farmer of the Year section after impressing judges with the strength of their partnership. Share Farmer category head judge Michele Cranefield from ANZ said the couple is a very good team and one could pick up where the other left off.

“They are impressive with numbers and extremely passionate about the dairy industry, what they’re doing and how they’re doing it.”

Judges were also impressed by Will and Kali’s community involvement. The couple, currently contract milkers for Tim and Victoria Gorton on their 350-cow, 113ha Halcombe farm, also picked up two merit awards.

James and Debbie of Stewart Dairylands in Hiwinui were named recipients of the 2024 Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award.

About Us

This prestigious award was created to recognise and celebrate dairy farmers who demonstrate leadership in their approach to sustainability. They must also be passionate about the four pillars of responsible dairying: people and community, finance, environment and animal welfare.

The panellists were impressed with the Stewarts’ outward understanding of the dairy industry, its importance to New Zealand and the importance of building their own story and brand.

“Their passion, professionalism and leadership within the industry, across all aspects of their business is beyond impressive and only surpassed by their dedication to giving back to their local community,” said head panellist Michael Hide.

Third place-getter in the Dairy Trainee of the Year, Isabella Panettiere, also won the DairyNZ Practical Skills merit award. She is the herd manager on Fonterra’s 255ha, 630-cow Longburn farm.

Isabella holds a Bachelor of Science majoring in animal science and completed the LIC artificial insemination course. Currently, she is studying towards PrimaryITO level three livestock feeding. Judges described Isabella as a surprise package who is new to the industry and farming life.

“It’s brilliant to see someone who wasn’t raised on a farm succeed in dairying. She has a thirst for knowledge and is supported by her farm employers.” Head judge Mark Laurence said the judges were impressed by Isabella’s enthusiasm, skills, knowledge and quiet confidence.

Forestry sector recognised at awards ceremony

The annual Southern North Island Forestry Awards, held in Palmerston North this month, saw 12 trophies awarded from 52 nominees across the lower North Island.

Southern North Island Wood Council chief executive officer Erica Kinder said the forestry community needed a night to get together to celebrate and send their attendees back out as advocates for the sector, with some good stories to tell.

“Southern North Island Wood Council is proud to hold these awards every year and continue to provide accurate information about our forestry workplaces to the public,” she said.

The McCarthy family, which owns logging truck company McCarthy Transport, were honoured for their contribution to the sector, winning the Forestry Family of the Year award. Arthur McCarthy founded the company in 1949, and his son Mark took over the business 39 years later.

Now, Mark’s sons, Matt and Mike, run the business. Mark’s other son Bryan owns Mangoihe Logging which was part of McCarthy Transport.

McCarthy Transport also sponsored the Contractor of the Year category, which was won by Moutere 2. Established in 2015, Moutere 2 is based in Karioi Forest working for Ernslaw One Ltd.

Keenan Forestry, founded by Gavin and Janice Keenan in 2017, was recognised for the Training Excellence award. With decades of experience behind them, and a team of 16 employees, Gavin oversees

operations while Janice manages the administration, health and safety, and training.

The Emerging Talent of the Year award was won by Jaden Clifford-Marsh, who has been part of the Keenan Forestry crew for almost two years. He is described as motivated, hard-working and ready to help his colleagues.

From a young age, Anton Wichman of Wichman Silviculture Ltd has been employed in the forestry industry. He won the Outstanding Health and Safety

Management category. The Wood Processing Excellence Award was presented to Tamate Clayton. Since starting out as a table hand in the industry seven years ago, Tamate is now senior operator of the Kiwi Lumber Masterton Sawline.

Caitlin Thomsen won the Woman in Forestry Award of Excellence. She has been working in the forestry industry for four years and is noted for her ability to stay calm under pressure and excellent

loading abilities. Havendale Logging took out the Outstanding Environmental Management section. The team were recognised for environmental consideration in harvesting.

The Silviculture Excellence award was presented to KTM Contracting, owned by Troy and Kelly Mason. During the last planting season, KTM Contracting planted 2.86 million trees for five different companies. Clinton Buller, who runs log cartage company Dalefield Transport, has decades of experience driving trucks and involvement in the forestry industry. He won the Distribution Excellence Award.

Sixth-generation logger Allan Clapperton took home the Harvesting Excellence section. Allan is currently Brolly Logging’s ground-based crew foreman, contracted to Forest Enterprises, and he dedicates considerable time to training and coaching crew members. Adam Gresham of Kiwi Lumber won the Contribution to the Forest Industry category. This is the seventh year that the Southern North Island Forestry Awards have been held.

The Stewart family’s connection to their land traces back more than 100 years with each generation expanding the legacy business.

Since the first purchase of 80 acres near Palmerston North by Scottish immigrant David Stewart in the 1880s, the family’s farm has grown to 580ha. Although sheep were the family’s livelihood for more than 100 years, diversification has been a key factor in the farming operation.

Five generations have farmed the Hiwinui property since 1886, prioritising land care and sustainable systems.

Current income streams come from dairy, cattle, the family’s hospitality business Hiwinui Country Estate and farm tours.

In 1999, James and Debbie, and James’ parents Dave and Jan, established Stewart Dairylands. James said the aim behind Stewart Dairylands was to diversify the family’s farming operation, which at the time was predominantly sheep.

“Dairylands was formed as a new entity to have a clearer distinction between the two farming systems.”

Stewart Dairylands has expanded the dairy operation to cover two milking platforms. James and Debbie began sharemilking for the Stewart Partnership but when Dairylands was formed,

became directors and shareholders of the new company.

A new 36-aside herringbone shed was built to replace the original 10-aside cowshed after the purchase of a 40ha neighbouring property. This property now

covers 170ha, milking 400 cows with a production target of 170,000kgMS. The addition of a 500-cow feed pad has proved invaluable to protect soils during winter. It’s also used to feed out maize silage in autumn.

Another dairy block, Dairylands 2, was established in 2015 after a land purchase and a conversion from cattle and dairy support. This 180ha farm milks 420 cows, aiming towards a 200,000kgMS production target. A 54-bale rotary with in-shed feeding is used. Both farms use various aspects of farm automation. The Tokomaru silt loam or clay soil type is one of the biggest challenges on-farm.

“We mitigate this by tailoring our breeding programme to breed a more medium-sized animal, have a low stocking of a peak of 2.4 cows per hectare, planned winter grazing, no winter crops, and planned infrastructure including a large feed pad.

“Supplementary feed grown on the dairy farm is pasture surplus in the form of silage, turnips and chicory,” said James.

Further supplements, maize, silage and hay, are made on support farmland. The farm receives an average annual rainfall of 1,000mls. James finds the different challenges each day, along with networks and people, to be the most enjoyable aspects of working in the dairy industry. The opportunities that dairy farming brings, along with the hardworking people that the family have been involved with over the years, are some of their farming highlights.

“Also developing the farm into the sustainable business it is today,” said James. Early December is the family’s favourite time of year.

“It’s when the grass is still growing, milk is still flowing, the pressure has come off and the crops are in. You can take time to enjoy the better weather and reap the

rewards of the hard work put in thus far in the season.”

An environmental plan has been put in place for the farm, trees planted, a wetland created and walking track cleared. Water used to wash the milking yard is recycled, reducing the use of fresh water for irrigation. Solar has also been added for energy efficiencies. Stewart Dairylands also works closely with Massey University’s School of Agriculture and are founding members of Rural Innovation Lab.

The Stewart family’s efforts were recognised recently when James and Debbie, and Dave and Jan, took out top honours at this year’s Ballance Farm

Environment Awards. Stewart Dairylands also won several other awards.

“It was very humbling, a huge honour, and a nice moment for the family and Stewart Dairylands team,” said James.

An underpass to streamline their farming system, succession plan development, further environmental plantings and further diversification into dairy beef are in the short-term plans. A few years ago, the Stewart family celebrated achieving Century Farm status and is now planning for the next hundred years.

“The world will keep changing, so we must keep an eye on what is expected, and demands and opportunities. We feel positive for the future,” said James.

THE JOY OF COWS

“Moo is a celebration of the humble and inquisitive cow, which is one of the most common farm animals on earth,” says Angus.

“I grew up on farms in rural Devon, in the United Kingdom, and in those days, before farming became corporatised, people had a few cows, but rural Devon didn’t have great fencing back then and we’d often see them out on the road.”

Angus loves animals. Moo adds to a series of published adult picture books celebrating them under

the Animal Happiness series with Exisle Publishing.

“With farmers having become more sensitive about animal welfare, we thought we’d produce Moo, celebrating how the world has got better with how they deal with animals.

“Exisle Publishing is an independent traditional publishing company, and, years ago, we produced our first adult animal picture books called Meow and Woof starting our series with simple pictures and quotes.

“The books are about the joys of animals, including Spirit, which is about horses, Cluck for chickens, Oink for pigs and Buzz for bees. They’re very good fun, and every critter has its own enthusiast.

“The vastly increasing intolerance for any maltreatment of cows and the thousands of rescue organisations

As an author, Angus St John Galloway delights in giving animals their time to shine

inspired me to produce a joyful pictorial celebration of the world’s billion cows.

“New Zealand has been my home for around 30 years but the most interesting place I’ve seen cows was in New Delhi where they’re revered. You can’t harm them or eat them — you find them in the middle of traffic and can’t do a thing.”

Angus says the eight million cows around New Zealand have become a big part of the landscape.

“One very urban girl asked me recently if all cows are girls. I smiled, and was very polite in my answer, but thought — she needs to spend a little more time in the country.

“Post-Covid we’ve noticed the small farm thing is coming back, with people setting up with a few cattle here and there. People love seeing cows in the countryside, the days of them only being a source of meat are long gone.

“Many people don’t realise that these gentle creatures are uniquely inquisitive and affectionate. They’re friendly and curious about humans as well — they want to know what’s going on. They’re terrific mothers, and if you watch them carefully, you notice their playfulness.

“The book is full of quotes that I’ve sourced from around the world. Some are jokes about human and bovine characteristics being the same. One picture is of a dangerous-looking bull and the Ronald Regan quote says ‘Trust, but verify’.

“From Thomas de Quincey to Mary Quant, cows have fascinated writers, philosophers, fashion designers, film stars and musicians for centuries. They’re hugely sociable creatures, with several strange habits, such as spending up to eight hours a day chewing.

“Moo opens your eyes to their immense variety, joyfulness and surprising tenderness. With photos of around 50 of the world’s most popular cattle breeds, it’s the perfect gift for anyone from bovine experts to folks who find cows cute.”

The publication date for Moo is set for June 19. It is available from exislepublishing. com and wherever good books are sold.

“New Zealand farming techniques aren’t as bad as some would like people to believe. Kiwi farmers are frankly pretty on to it. Often when people are around their cows, they relax.

“We believe if you know your flock individually, which a good farmer will, you’re in touch with your animals. We celebrate animals and constantly explore the human-to-animal relationship.

over into our little garden and had a good time with the fruit trees. They would always look at each other as if saying ‘What’s he doing now?’

“They were a part of life and they are very much valued by the farmers who could make a living out of 20 to 30 cattle. It wasn’t a grand living, and they

were nearly always named after flowers. To me, animals are born as they are, they accept it and live with a greater peace than people do.”

We have a copy of Moo to give to one lucky reader. To be in to win, email comp@integrity.nz and tell us if all cows are girls by Friday, May 31.

“They have the ability to travel and walk a fair distance at a time. Fundamentally, we’re very urbanised, and think we should be aware of that. We wouldn’t exist without cows.

“In my childhood, there were particular friendly Highland cattle cows that were naughty little fellas. They always crossed

SUNFLOWERS BRING HOPE AND COMPASSION

Planting a field of sunflowers on their Newbury lifestyle block began with a couple of objectives in mind, but Dan and Kerry Reader soon found this project expanded further.

When her mother passed away in Scotland in 2021, Kerry’s family decided they would travel to New Zealand and bring over some of her ashes. A few months after her mother’s passing, the Russian-Ukraine war began.

“Planting sunflowers was to honour my family and give them something special when they came to visit. I grew up in a council flat in Scotland in a dense urban area but have always loved sunflowers,” said Kerry.

“Also, in front of my mind, was what was going on in Ukraine. I was reading

a lot about the war and saw a photo of a Ukrainian grandmother in front of a Russian soldier offering him sunflower seeds — their national flower.

“The sunflowers we planted were to honour Ukraine and for my family coming at Christmas to see the sunflowers growing across the fields.”

In her work as a psychologist, Kerry also wanted to use sunflowers to brighten people’s day.

“I wanted to do something that was mental health-focussed to lift the spirits a wee bit.”

“We

first season.”

The following year, Dan and Kerry thought the first sowing had failed so they accidently ended up sowing two bags of seeds. They ended up with more than 150,000 sunflowers.

“This year, we ended up with two plantings of the striped seed, which was not intentional, but they grew taller and skinnier due to not having enough space.

“The Autumn Beauty variety was also sown in the second planting. It was a bit of a mixed season. We learnt a lot this year.”

Kerry said the property’s front paddocks, covering just over two hectares, were the obvious choice to grow sunflowers.

“The sunflowers can be seen as people drive past or up to the property. Now we are getting to a stage, where if we get busier, we may have to move it to the back. We want to keep it in the area with the willow tree as people picnic under it.”

Dan forms paths while sowing the seeds, ensuring people will still be surrounded by sunflowers. The couple estimated thousands of people have visited their sunflower field since opening in mid-January.

“We would have easily got about 1,000 people through on Waitangi Day alone,” said Kerry.

Although the sunflower field began in honour of Kerry’s mother and the RussianUkraine war, the couple has found opening the gates to the community has brought joy to many people. They’ve met people from many different walks of life, too.

“To see the smiles and opportunities we’ve been able to give to groups, those with disabilities and aged-care groups to enjoy the nature and the environment. It’s just the opportunity we’ve been able to give the community, which is affordable.

“We are right on the doorstep of the city, making it more accessible, and they’ve

all enjoyed a different experience, walking away with photographs and memories. That makes it all worthwhile.

“One woman spent her last moments with us before going to Hospice. There’s also been a gender reveal and first date nights.”

Kerry said opening their Newbury Sunflowers to the public has definitely been rewarding.

“We just want the community to enjoy it.”

The Readers closed the gate to their sunflower field for the season in February.

“We are very much looking forward to next year.”

Winter has arrived in Manawatu

with a mild autumn transitioning us through to only a couple of very fresh frosts that see us not wanting to let the re go out at night.

We haven’t had good grass growth leading up to winter and many customers have not used their outdoor power equipment. If they sit for long periods of time with fuel in them, they can cause internal damage.

If you want your mowers/chainsaws/ generators checked over and serviced before they are needed again. Please consider coming to see your locally-owned independent retailer Central Mowers.

With three mechanics, the turnaround at this time of year is very quick, so most repairs are sorted and ready for collection within the week. Rob also has loan trailers to borrow, so you can bring your gear in.

Rob and the team have very good stock levels of whole goods, so if you are in the market for something new, call in — don’t wait for national specials, Rob and Sue are ready to talk turkey. As an independent retailer, Central Mowers only stocks products they know and trust, so for those trusted brands like Masport, Lawnmaster, Echo, Shindaiwa, Oleo-Mac, Hustler and Cub Cadet, come in and talk to an expert.

Please make the effort to support Central Mowers and other locally owned businesses. They rely on you buying that coffee, purchasing a gift from a local gift store supporting the locally owned clothing or shoe store. If

we don’t continue to do this then many more businesses will have no choice but to shut the doors.

For great service and industry knowledge please visit Rob, Megan and the team at Central Mowers, your home of outdoor power equipment servicing the Manawatu region for more than 13 years. We’re located at 696 Tremaine Avenue, Palmerston North. Phone 06 355 2967. Visit centralmowers.co.nz or nd us on Facebook.

Rural Women business awards

Rural Women New Zealand and premier partner NZI have launched this year’s NZI Rural Women NZ Business Awards.

“This year’s awards will reflect the increasing diversity in the enterprises that women own and operate in rural and regional Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Rural Women New Zealand national president Gill Naylor.

“Following a review, we have revised some of our award categories to embrace specific sectors that have seen phenomenal growth in recent years. In particular, our judges have noted a significant increase in businesses that provide unique experiences, accommodation and hospitality in amazing rural locations.

“Another key trend is the growth of businesses producing and selling incredible products from rural locations. Our NZI Supreme Award winner in 2023, Sophie Hurley of Honest Wolf in Hunterville, is a testament to the fact that living rurally needs no longer be an impediment to creating and building a hugely successful business.

“RWNZ is delighted that our premier partner, NZI, which shares RWNZ’s goals to strengthen, support and connect people and communities, will be joining us on the awards journey again this year.”

NZI’s executive manager Agencies and Schemes, Christina Chellew, says they are delighted to support the NZI Rural Women

NZ Business Awards as a premier partner and to recognise and promote innovative rural women in business.

“Every year, judges are impressed by the quality of the entrants, and we have no doubt this year will be even better.

“It was a pleasure to meet so many incredible women doing amazing things at the awards last year. The evening also showcases the vital role rural women play in fostering resilient and prosperous communities, and we are proud to continue to be a part of it.

“These awards provide a fantastic opportunity for women who own and

operate rural enterprises to showcase their creativity and innovation. We are looking forward to recognising and celebrating this year’s entrants.”

Right for the land

With resource consents and regulations surrounding effluent ponds, sometimes it is difficult for farmers to decide on a suitable one for the farm.

Effluent storage is a difficult business, especially since there are various options to select from. There are several considerations, depending on if you are designing one for installation or upgrading the current system. Travelling irrigators, low-rate sprinklers with mechanical separation and sometimes muck spreader systems have stormwater diversion systems in place.

Travelling irrigators are suitable for flat to low-sloped farms, with no particular landscape or climate risk factors, and freely-draining soil. The traditional design allows the effluent to flow from the yard through a stone trap to the storage facility using gravity or a pump mechanism.

Farms prone to high-risk soils, high rainfall areas or sensitive catchments will benefit

from a low-rate sprinkler with mechanical separation set up. Like the travelling irrigator option, effluent flows through a stone trap but then to a mechanical separator. The solids are removed, and the liquid can be pumped to storage. The liquid can then be irrigated on to the property using minimal low-rate sprinklers.

A muck-spreading system is suited to smaller farms with fewer cattle. The system runs with a pump or gravity feed to the effluent storage before being stirred and sucked into a muck spreader truck. It is then sprayed on the land.

Moving day checklist

It can be stressful for farmers on the move for the approaching Gypsy Day on June 1, and while many of the preparation tasks are completed, some simple steps can help lessen the load.

While many travelling agriculturalists have their stock trucks and accommodation sorted, there are other considerations to prepare for. Sometimes, the best plan is to achieve them bit by bit so there is an easy transition.

Refresh yourself by rereading the contract, so you know what the landowner expects when you leave. There will be details on how things like houses and effluent infrastructure should look like when vacating the property.

Washing and disinfecting tools used on animals, vehicles and machinery can help prevent biosecurity risks and contamination. While cleaning the machinery, ensure everything is in working order and check what needs to be repaired. Get rid of items like empty plastic containers, agrichemicals and other unnecessary waste. The less rubbish to clean up in the final week, the smoother the move will be. Agrecovery has collection sites throughout the Manawatū region.

The company has container drop-off points at the Farmlands in Levin and Pahiatua, Farm Source in Dannevirke, Longburn, Feilding, Levin, Marton, Pahiatua and Shannon.

There are also locations at PGG Wrightson in Feilding and Taumarunui, Whanganui Farm Supplies and Griffin AgAir in Palmerston North. Marton Waste, Taihape Waste and Waimarino (in Ohakune) transfer stations have drop-off points, too. Before the big move, it pays to do a stocktake of supplies, machinery

and other equipment. It can help determine what is required for the contract on the new farm and is good for insurance purposes.

Stocktaking early can give farmers time to budget for what is needed and sell unwanted equipment or supplies. Check that all National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) records are up to date and that the stocks are tagged.

Confirming livestock transportation can help relieve stress, too and provide time to

Horticulture New Zealand’s existential question

It’s a time of transition for Horticulture New Zealand, the advocacy group which speaks out for growers in the nation’s $4.6 billion crop and orchard industries.

Not only is a new government taking a new line on important issues in the sector, such as water use and the Resource Management Act’s replacement, but HNZ’s long-term CEO is also departing.

“You have continued to inspire me with your commitment and determination, even when the chips are down, and it has been a pleasure and a privilege to support you,” said Nadine Tunley, announcing her retirement from the role.

“I look forward to continuing to connect with as many of you as possible before I leave.”

Horticulture New Zealand board chair Barry O’Neil says the board is disappointed to see Nadine go.

“While the timing of a valued CEO’s departure is never ideal, the board and Nadine feel it is important that with a new commodity levy proposal about to be voted on, HNZ is able to recruit a replacement CEO that can lead the organisation and deliver strategic outcomes for the next six years, with the full energy required.”

Ms Tunley will be out-of-office by August when HNZ delegates meet for the organisation’s annual conference. Before then, however, the matter of the levy proposal mentioned by Mr O’Neill must be addressed. During this month,

more than 4,200 growers nationwide will receive voting packs to have their say on the continued existence of HNZ in its current form. Official communications from the organisation suggest that if the levy vote fails, it could be the end of organised advocacy in horticulture.

“A yes majority vote will mean HortNZ continues to promote and protect your

interests in an ever-changing environment. A no-majority vote will mean an end to HortNZ. The organisation would be wound up; there would no longer be an advocacy body dedicated to working on behalf of growers,” says the group in the lead-up to the vote.

It’s also indicated that events like the Young Grower of the Year and

programmes such as Growing Change will end and the sector will lose capability and vital relationships.

All growers will have their say about the levy through their vote during the polling period, which lasts until June 14. Like many industry advocacy groups supported by a levy, there’s a requirement for the practice and the levels of payment involved to be consulted every six years. The current levy order would otherwise expire in March 2025.

Options beyond electric explored

Toyota may have recently launched its first specialist-designed battery electric vehicle in New Zealand, but on a wider scale, the huge industrial innovator is banking on hydrogen.

While sales of the BZ4X battery SUV are expected to be robust for Toyota dealers, a multi-pronged approach by the firm is also pushing the benefits and practicality of the universe’s most abundant element.

They began the charge with the provision of an entirely hydrogen-powered chase vessel to help get Emirates Team New Zealand within reach of yachting’s biggest prize, but they have not stopped there, says Toyota New Zealand CEO Neeraj Lala.

After a series of demanding trials on the water, Emirates Team New Zealand’s Chase Zero is now in Europe with the team, and orders have been received for five more hydrogen fuel cell chase boats for other America’s Cup teams.

“Following our investment with Emirates Team New Zealand with the development of its hydrogen chase boat, our investment in the Toyota hydrogen generator is designed to allow partners to test and consider hydrogen as a genuine alternative energy source in the commercial sector,” says Neeraj.

“We are passionate about exploring the broader use of hydrogen across multiple sectors, including construction, which relies heavily on diesel generators.”

Such devices may not be as eyecatching as cars, but they are large consumers of diesel fuel, emitters of carbon and, at the same time, a vital part of the construction trade.

Replacing them with hydrogen would be a coup.

Wellington Airport was the test site for a hydrogen generator trial arranged between Toyota and Air New Zealand in late March.

The national carrier

to test the waters of hydrogen technology and see if one of the big generators powered by Toyota technology could charge up its Wellington fleet of electric runway tugs and carts.

Nexus Energy Limited, a Powerco-approved contractor, can take care of your electrical infrastructure work safely, on time and on budget, with professionalism and reliability.

Specialising in a wide range of electrical work, the locally owned and operated business offers several different services.

Nexus Energy Limited recognises the necessity of rural power to meet on-

farm requirements. Its team of seasoned professionals can replace poles in paddocks, remove decommissioned poles and run new underground power.

“Undergrounding your connection from the road to your property removes the risk

of wind and trees cutting power to your property,” said Nexus Energy Limited general manager Regan Van Der Kley.

Based in Palmerston North, Nexus Energy Limited has served the Manawatuˉ/Whanganui region since 2011, delivering excellence in every project in a professional and reliable manner. Customer satisfaction is guaranteed.

cabling, power pole replacement and rewiring.

“We can service your requirements from pole top to power point and everything in between. Having both electricians and line mechanics means less hassle for the customer.

“We know that they just want power on. Engaging multiple contractors can be confusing and cause costly delays.”

“We consistently beat the competition on price, have great communication and quality work is non-negotiable. As we are locally owned and operated, there is no remote board of directors or management driving up costs,” said Regan.

From planning stages to implementation of electrical infrastructure, Nexus Energy Limited covers residential and commercial subdivisions of all sizes. The team recently completed the Alan Miers Drive subdivision at Summerhill.

Reduce energy costs with Insulmax

A warm, dry home is not only a great comfort to return to at the end of the day, but there are also huge health bene ts and signi cant money saved on energy bills.

Insulmax Manawatu licensees Stephen and Kathleen Jestin have a long background in insulation and have been installing wall insulation since 2006. As a former builder, Stephen has always held a special interest in energy ef ciency and sustainable technologies.

For the past seven years, the Jestins have been licence holders for Insulmax Manawatu. The Insulmax team offers customers premium wall and ceiling insulation that complies with all New Zealand building regulations.

Kathleen said all council compliance is taken care of on behalf of customers, and Insulmax has a strict quality control process.

“At the end of each install, we check our work with a thermal imaging camera to ensure nothing is missed.”

Insulmax is a blown bre product made from recycled glass. It is installed into wall cavities via small 16mm holes, either externally or internally. Holes are then lled, sanded and painted, or, in the case of brick, lled with matching mortar.

“Insulmax is the most economical and ef cient method of installing wall insulation, especially now, as there is such a shortage of building materials. Insulmax saves tonnes of building

materials from ending up in land lls by eliminating the need to remove wall linings,” said Stephen.

“Our installs are usually completed in one day by our team of licensed installers.

“Insulmax wall insulation gives older homes a higher insulation value than a new home. It is more effective than double-glazing and is a fraction of the cost. Insulmax can be installed via internal or external wall linings in most styles of homes.”

A recent customer compared their electricity costs prior to their Insulmax installation in July 2020 and after their installation in July 2021. Their electricity account had reduced from $398.11 to $179.77 — a saving of more than 50%.

“Our highlights are hearing from our happy customers about the huge differences in temperature and comfort levels in their home, as well as the huge savings customers are making on their heating and cooling bills,” said Stephen.

Insulmax Manawatu is centrally located to cover the region and neighbouring Horowhenua, Whanganui and Rangitikei.

“We plan to continue to give the same high level of service to our customers, and to help the owners of older houses to create warmer, more energy ef cient homes.”

For Home Owners

DO YOU WANT THE WARM WALL FEEL OF A NEW HOME?

Warm, healthy homes start with blown insulation. If cold or damp are words you’d use to describe your home or if you’re tired of high heating bills, insulation is a major part of the solution. While heating solutions seem like the answer, reducing the amount of heat escaping from your home is the most cost effective way to get an energy efficient, warm, dry home.

Hard-hitting changes to resource consent

Recently the coalition government made its first move toward replacing the Resource Management Act and the alternatives posited by the now-deposed Labour government.

The so-called RM Bill 1 is packed with good news for farmers. It includes urgent changes to amend stock exclusion regulations relating to sloped land, repeal intensive winter grazing regulations and remove the requirement for councils to chart Significant Natural Areas.

“RM Bill 1 focusses on targeted changes that can take effect quickly and give certainty to councils and consent applicants while new legislation to replace the RMA is developed,” says RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop.

“This bill will reduce the regulatory burden on resource consent applicants and support development in key sectors, including farming, mining and other primary industries. These sectors are critical to rebuilding the New Zealand economy.”

The ministers involved say the bill will clarify that, while the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management is being reviewed and replaced, resource consent applicants no longer need to demonstrate their proposed activities follow the Te Mana o te Wai hierarchy of obligations, as set out in the NPS-FM.

“Removing the need for resource consent applicants to demonstrate that their activities follow the hierarchy of obligations will better reflect the interests of all water users,” said Agriculture Minister Todd McClay.

“Cabinet has agreed upon changes to stock exclusion and winter grazing regulations representing a move to a more risk-based, catchmentfocussed approach.

“We’re proposing to remove the problematic and contentious low slope map and for regional councils and farmers to determine where stock needs to be excluded, based on risk. The focus is on farm-level and regionally suitable solutions. This will reduce costs for farmers.”

“This announcement will be a relief for many farmers who were faced with an unnecessary regulatory burden and

significant on-farm compliance costs. As always, details matter, and we are eager to see the details that follow this announcement,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand chair Kate Acland.

“Farmers need clarity and certainty to make on-farm investments and changes to their farming systems safe in the knowledge that regulations will be science-based, practical and enduring.

“Farmers have made significant environmental improvements in the last few years by excluding stock from waterways and better managing the risks of winter grazing.”

RM Bill 1 is expected to be introduced to parliament in May and passed into law later this year. In the interim, regulations based on Labour-era National Policy Statements may still apply — consult your local council.

Recharge battery additive for maximum performance

“Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated. Sulphation reduces charge holding capacity and corrodes internal lead plates, resulting in premature battery failure,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive.

“It was very nice to get a call from Rick Ashley in Kati Kati who said, and I quote: ‘Having owned and operated garages for the last 40 years, I believe I know a good product when I use one. I have used Recharge in batteries on many occasions with impressive results. From bringing them back to life and as periodic cleansing every two years. My own vehicle has the original battery still going strong to this day at 19 years. This has been veri ed by two battery dealers. Recharge is an awesome product.’ Rick Ashley, RJ Automotive, Kati Kati, Bay of Plenty.

“Lead-acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up. A Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons,” says Anselmi. “It is a simple formula. Treat batteries early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged. The earlier you treat them, the less damage is done, and the longer they will go.”

Gerard and Debbie will be at the National Field Days again this year at site D-122 as usual, or you can purchase the two-litre online for $360. It is far cheaper at the Fieldays, however, at $295 as there is no DG freight, so see us there. However, we are offering a Fieldays special on freight for the two-litre. We will deliver a two-litre to your nearest service centre for $330 — conditions apply.

The two-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries, so it’s about $7 to treat an N-70zz. Please visit our website recharge.net.nz for more information. Recharge is also available at some Farmlands stores but, unfortunately, not all — due to freight costs.

Yes, you can treat sealed batteries by drilling into each cell treating and resealing with polyurethane windscreen sealant, is best. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries.

New Zealand farming’s red-letter days

The scene is set and the anticipation is building, as 2024’s National Fieldays prepares to transform Mystery Creek into the biggest rural event on the Kiwi calendar.

More than 1,000 exhibitors will come together for a four-day exposition of farming technology, and a celebration of the biggest sector of the Kiwi economy. Fieldays has been a pivotal event in New Zealand’s agricultural life for 56 years now, and it’s getting stronger each time it’s held. Once again, the big event will unfold this year at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek Events Centre, from June 12 to June 15.

Regional buses from Raglan, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Huntly, Taumarunui, Te Kuiti and Tokoroa will be free of charge for Fieldays patrons to reach Hamilton. From there, another free bus will take them to the immense site with all its attractions.

“Fieldays is more than just an exhibition. It’s a vital connection point that strengthens the bonds within our agricultural community,” says New Zealand National Fieldays Society CEO Peter Nation.

“For more than half a century, this four-day event has played a pivotal role in fostering relationships, creating connections, facilitating knowledge transfer and driving progress in our primary industries.”

It’s so big that the Feildays has been divided into six distinct hubs, Innovation, Hauora Taiwhenua Health & Wellbeing, Forestry, Careers & Education, Sustainability and Digital Futures. New this year is a Rural Advocacy Hub.

The Advocacy Hub will bring together many rural organisations that advocate for farmers on a national level. Exhibitors include Federated Farmers, Young Farmers, Groundswell, Rural Women, Future Farmers NZ and many more. It will be the first time so many of the groups providing a voice for the farming community are all together under one roof, and it may be a great opportunity to foster further unity.

Low,

The hub is also planned to be a lively forum for discussions, announcements and initiatives to amplify the voices and concerns of the country’s farmers and rural communities. Peter Nation is enthusiastic about working alongside Federated Farmers to deliver a dedicated advocacy space like this.

“We know it’s incredibly tough out there this year. It’s never been more important for farmers to be heard and to have advocates amplifying their voices.

“This new hub delivers on Fieldays’ purpose of advancing agriculture through both education and collaboration,” said Mr Nation.

“Federated Farmers is New Zealand’s leading rural advocacy organisation, so they were a natural fit for us to partner with to bring the hub to life. Fieldays provide the opportunity for connection and collaboration, and this hub will live those values.”

Federated Farmers president Wayne Langford says the hub builds on its vision to unite rural advocacy groups as one team supporting farmers.

“Farmers want to see the different advocacy groups that represent them working together constructively to get the best outcomes we can for our rural communities,” Mr Langford said.

“If we work as a team, with everyone playing in the right position, we can achieve a lot more for farmers than any one organisation can by working alone.

“We’ve all got our own positions and roles to play in the team, but we need to be working together and communicating well or we risk knocking the ball on. This

hub will bring all of those players together under one roof for the first time and we look forward to continuing to build on the concept in future years.”

As well as plenty to listen to and plenty to learn through the hub structure of Fieldays, there will be a showcase of innovations in the agricultural sector to browse, and plenty of machinery and hardware in all its glory. One of the biggest drawcards will, once again, be the competition to secure two very coveted national-level titles.

Tony Bouskill won the Fieldays Fencing Competitions Golden Pliers Singles Championship by Wiremark for the fifth year in a row in 2023, cementing a place

in the history books. We can expect some tough competition for this year’s contest, as top fencers from around New Zealand step up to display speed, determination and skill. Mr Bouskill says the key to his winning formula is the ability to keep calm and focus on the task in front of him. No easy feat when you witness the ferocious pace these rural athletes set themselves.

Also lighting up the competitive field will be the ace drivers of the tractor pull, with three days of heats pitting the monsters of farming diesel against the sledge, before the finals on June 15. Just around the corner, other top operators will be at the controls of competitive excavators. With a scorecard comprising

10 precision tasks, this year’s excavator pros will battle to exceed the benchmark set by 2023 victors Michael Brown, Aaron Maguire and Zahnn Hedges.

There’s so much to see and do at New Zealand’s biggest rural event. It’s a good idea to visit the official website at fieldays.co.nz, check out the range of products, ideas, flavours, discussions and innovations on offer, and make a four-day adventure of it. Tickets are on sale now.
