Young Farmers gearing up for grand final

Contestants from across New Zealand are putting in the hard yards during the build up to the 2014 ANZ Young Farmer Contest Grand Final in Christchurch on July 3–5.

July 3. The practical day will be held at the university on July 4. On Friday evening, an ANZ Sponsors and Speeches Dinner will be held at Wigram Airforce Museum.

The competition continues on July 5 with the live televised evening show at CBS Arena, followed by the Celebratory Ball at Addington Raceway.

The grand final has a total prize pool of over $300,000. The champion will go home with nearly $70,000 in prizes including cash, scholarships, products and services from ANZ, Lincoln University, Ravensdown, AGMARDT,

Silver Fern Farms, Honda, Husqvarna and Vodafone.

Contest chairman Kyle Goodwin said the grand final is shaping up to be a very strong competition.

“There is an interesting mix of competition and industry experience with this group.”

University, Mr Lewis took up a position on a Canterbury dairy farm. He now works as a farm manager on his family’s 500 cow dairy farm near Levin.

Seven grand finalists were determined from 56 competitors at regional level.

Those grand finalists will prepare, through study and practical practice, for an agricultural test of skills, strength and expertise.

“It’s a fair bit of work, but it’s good fun and you meet lots of like-minded people, and you up-skill your abilities,” said Mr Lewis.

Taranaki/Manawatu Young Farmer regional winner Brad Lewis set for the national grand final

Representing the Taranaki/Manawatu region is Brad Lewis of the Opiki Young Farmers Club. This year’s competition will be his second and last attempt at the grand final. Mr Lewis placed third overall at the 2012 grand final in Dunedin. Competition rules stipulate that a competitor can only advance through to the grand final twice.

Twenty-eight-year-old Mr Lewis grew up on his family’s asparagus farm in the Horowhenua. During his high school years, he worked as a relief milker on several dairy farms in the district.

lthough Kenyan-born Cecilia was keen on painting at school, the opportunity to follow this up began in her early twenties.

Cecilia was told the area she was due to visit near Lake Victoria was very beautiful, but there wasn’t much

to do, and it was pity she didn’t paint.

Her then-to-be brother-in-law was listening and lent her a small travel watercolour kit and two pieces of watercolour paper.

and painted the view towards Lake Victoria,” said Cecilia.

“When I showed my work, my friend was so excited and pleased with the result.”

Cecilia received the same response the following evening with a painting of a different view.

“His enthusiasm was enough to inspire me to buy myself some paints on my return home and I have never looked back.”

Apart from stints living in London, Brussels and Venice, Cecilia has always lived in the country and enjoyed the rural lifestyle.

“I was practically born on a horse but my riding days came to an abrupt end when the racehorse I was training reared up and flipped over backwards, crushing my spine and leaving me paralysed from the waist down,” said Cecilia.

Cecilia cares for a variety of pets

Cecilia paints using acrylics and watercolours

For the past 22 years, Cecilia has been living on a 2200 hectare farm with her husband Hew. Hew, currently the Federated Farmers Grain and Seed vice-chairperson, and his brother Roger, share the property near Bulls.

The farm’s cropping and forestry operation is managed by Hew, while Roger takes care of the livestock. Hew and Cecilia’s 18-year-old son also works full-time on the farm.

Cecilia’s love of animals provides her main inspiration for painting. And with her own pets including Highland cows, a donkey, alpacas, a pig, deer, a lamb, cats and a dog, there is a variety of animals to paint. Sometimes Cecilia is asked to paint a portrait of a person’s

favourite dog, horse or cat. While most of Cecilia’s previous exhibitions were based on Africa, it was a friend’s rural photo diary that inspired her ‘On the Farm’ show.

“For this latest show, I had 16 paintings which included landscapes, farm dogs, horses, birds, sheep being mustered, and cows,” said Cecilia.

“I also had lots of hand-made necklaces which I made out of old buttons, beads and anything else I could get my hands on.”

She sold cards of her artwork as well.

Apart from a couple of weekend workshops, Cecilia is a self-taught painter, learning through trial and error. Cecilia said her larger pieces

“The smaller ones may be watercoloured, painted in my very untidy little office. I find these mediums work well for me, but I would love to go on a course to learn about using oils and pastels,” she said.

Although she doesn’t paint on a regular basis, every two or three years Cecilia may choose to hold an exhibition.

“Then it’s all action for awhile, otherwise, apart from the very occasional commission, I don’t paint.”

Cecilia said she sometimes even completely changes her style.

“Time will tell when I next get inspired to paint and what the subject matter will be,” said Cecilia.

THE MANAWATU HAS NEVER BEEN CONSIDERED AS A GRAPE-PRODUCING REGION IN THE PAST, BUT THE OWNERS OF POHANGINA VALLEY ESTATE ARE PROVING OTHERWISE.

N

ick and Bronwyn Dymock initially established the vineyard 14 years ago. Bronwyn’s sister Fiona McMorran joined the family-owned venture soon afterwards.

Careful planning and consideration went into choosing a suitable location for both the vineyard, and the grape varieties to be grown. An olive grove was also planted on the property.

Pohangina Valley Estate has since gone on to win numerous wine accolades in New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Australia.

Situated on a north-facing, sheltered, stony river terrace above the Pohangina River, the vineyard takes up four hectares of the 55 hectare property. The vineyard

was developed from scratch with the four hectare site cleared of fences and macrocarpa trees. The trees were milled, stored and later used to build a house on the property.

Bronwyn and Nick, with the help of family and friends, planted 16,000 grapevines by hand. Five varieties of olive trees, Leccino, Picholine, Frantoio, Barnea, and Koronekei, were also carefully selected to suit the property’s soil conditions, and 350 of these planted.

Fiona said the region’s climate is considered borderline for grapes.

“For this reason we only planted cold climate grape varieties that ripen in late autumn.

“We also do everything by hand to ensure we produce and only pick the best quality grape for the winemaker,” she said.

“The olives were planted as landscaping to fill the odd-shaped areas that were left after the driveway went in.

“They like good free-draining soil and they identify if you have clay seams running through the soil as they quickly up and die.”

Fortunately the olives have all grown really well, with some producing more fruit than others.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the trio but together they’ve overcome the challenges faced along the way.

vineyard was the isolation. “We could not hop next door and see how things were done or borrow equipment.”

This meant the trio developed and learnt techniques as they went along, and weren’t influenced by existing methods.

Soon after planting the vines, hares and rabbits took a liking to the plants.

Plants then had to be individually boxed until they reached the fruiting wire.

With no other vineyards in the Manawatu, the trio originally found people automatically assumed wines produced in the region would not be good quality. Pohangina Valley Estate’s award-winning wines have proven this assumption to be unfounded. The

region’s cool climate suits the grape varieties grown on the property, and yields have increased over the years. Grapes are taken to awardwinning winemaker Chris Buring, of Oak House in Martinborough, where he turns them into a range of wines under the Pohangina Valley Estate label. The range includes Pinot Gris; a Pinot Gris/Chardonnay blend; Chardonnay; a Pinot Gris/Pinot Noir blend labelled Totara Gold; Pinot Noir; and an unidentified grape, DNA tested in California with no match on the data base, named Totara Reserve.

Olives are taken to The Olive Press in Masterton where a blend of the Koronekei and Leuccino varieties create Pohangina Valley Estate extra virgin olive oil.

Fiona said the olives are easy care and just need to be kept clear of grass underneath.

“We don’t do much pruning as the top part of the tree is left for the birds and we harvest the lower part onto mats on the ground.

“This takes place in June when the fruit is turning from green to black.” Work in the vineyard is ongoing throughout the year with different tasks each season. The trio undertake all the work themselves but locals are employed for picking and pruning.

December is a crucial time as both the grapes and olives set fruit.

A purpose-built tasting room added to the property has enabled the trio to open the cellar door to the public for wine tasting by appointment.

Over the past five years, a garden party held in March has also given the public an opportunity to visit Pohangina Valley Estate.

Although the majority of the wines produced by Pohangina Valley Estate are sold to wine tasting visitors, the trio are also pursuing an opportunity to export their wines to China, and have already exported Pinot Noir to Mongolia.

Remineralisation: the secret to soil success

Remineralisation has been shown to cause a phenomenal growth of the micro-organisms in the soil.

It increases the nutrient uptake of plants and it counters the effects of soil acidity, prevents soil erosion, increases the storage capacity of the soil and contributes to the building of precious humus complexes. Plants and trees become highly resistant to insects, disease, frost and drought.

Dr Hamaker estimates that on fully remineralised soil American agriculture could grow four times as much food as it is capable of now with no pesticides or chemical fertilisers.

The key to topsoil restoration is finely ground rock charged with micro-organisms. Basalt and granite are two of the best. Rockdust is the fundamental component of the new topsoil. This rockdust can restore only a fraction of the original topsoil which was formed over many years of geological processes. The Bad Boy/Intimidator folks aren’t messing around.

The Holden Commodore may soon be consigned to automotive history. But the brash Aussie super-sedan is going out with a defiant roar.

With a top speed theoretically over 300 kph (but limited to 250 for ‘safety’) and 575 horses under the hood, the new HSV GTS is only a gnat’s whisker away from having identical grunt to a Bathurst-spec V8 supercar. Over the years the government budgets have demonstrated a significant shift in the relationship between government and the farmer, which began in the late 1800s when New Zealand was an emerging nation reliant on agriculture for export income.

In May 1881 under the heading of Bonuses on Colonial Industries, the government offered £500 for the first 25 tons of butter or 50 tons of cheese to be exported. There was a stipulation that the produce had to have originated in a factory operating on the ‘American principle’ of a producer co-operative and was quite different from those of the butter and cheese dairies in the United Kingdom.

The underlying theme in the government’s budget is that with a government debt of $60 billion the nation will be reliant on New Zealand’s primary industries to provide the export income needed to repay debt.

It wasn’t so long ago that every National government Minister of Finance in presenting the budget acknowledged the value of New Zealand’s agricultural exports and farming subsidies were available for fertiliser, stock incentive schemes and several other incentives.

National Prime Ministers the Rt Hon Keith Holyoake and Rt Hon Rob Muldoon, also in his capacity as Minister of Finance, always expounded the value and the need to support the New Zealand farmer. The

1984 election resulted in David Lange’s Labour government being elected and Sir Robert Muldoon was removed as National Party leader. The Lange government removed all farming subsidy incentives.

The sudden transition from subsidies to a free-market economy under ‘Rogernomics’ caused a number of farmers to lose their farms through the resultant high interest rates — some in excess of 20 per cent, that were charged at the time. As a young farmer I and other farmers struggled financially. Federated Farmers’ leadership of the time embraced the new free-market economy and with others were highly critical of Muldoon’s former monetary policies.

17,000 farmers marched on Wellington protesting against the new Labour government’s policies as being unfair and not even-handed. During this time it seemed ironic to me that those farming leaders who embraced the freemarket economy had been responsible for asking for farming subsidy incentives in the first place. Today’s National government which was once described as the farmers’ party in gumboots, has clearly come to the realisation that it can no longer simply rely on the rural sector to get re-elected. Bill English’s budget is clearly targeting the young urban voter, the majority of which live in Auckland.

Every political party knows that whoever gets the majority of the Auckland vote becomes the government.

New president for Federated Farmers

Former Federated Farmers Manawatu-Rangitikei dairy chairperson, James Stewart, has stepped up as the newly-elected president for the province. He replaces Kiwitea dairy farmer Andrew Hoggard.

Mr Stewart joined Federated Farmers three years ago. He previously held a role as a Fonterra networker.

Federated Farmers national president Bruce Wills said the organisation is thrilled to have him on board as provincial president.

“James is an incredibly passionate advocate for the farming community and I know he will do a fantastic job.

“I would like to thank outgoing provincial president, Andrew Hoggard, for his service to the province and Federated Farmers.

“He has been an integral James Stewart is the new part of the Federation and will Federated Farmers Manawatu-Rangitikei president be looking to do even more if his election to the board, as dairy chair, 1993. The Stewart family farm, which began in 1886, is originally a sheep is successful.”

“My job as provincial president is to help them do what they do best — farm the land.”

“I also want to help link the two parts of the community, both urban and rural.”

“I would like to think I am pretty open and easy to engage with, and I’m keen to meet with anyone who wants to discuss the issues they have and form an educated opinion,” said Mr Stewart.

Dairying drives success A key message I always tell farmers, growers, fishers and foresters around the country is that we need to celebrate our success loudly and proudly. If we don’t, no-one else will do it for us.

That’s why I was proud to attend the Dairy Industry Awards in Auckland recently — a black-tie event attended by nearly 1,000 people. Congratulations to all the winners on the night. There were some inspiring winners like Ruth Hone who became the first ever woman to win Dairy Trainee of the Year. Out of the 11 dairy trainee finalists, five were women.

27-year-old Nick Bertram was named 2014 Farm Manager of the Year, which is a great achievement given he joined the industry with no family background or experience in farming.

Congratulations also to Charlie and Jody McCaig, 2014 New Zealand Sharemilker/Equity Farmers of the Year. In my speech I pointed out to the audience that every hour of every day, the dairy sector earns another $2 million in exports.

It’s the hard work of farmers that pays for our schools, roads and hospitals and I don’t believe you get thanked enough for that.

There is a lot to be proud of.

According to Dairy NZ, the productivity of dairy farmers has doubled in the last 50 years. I’m very proud of the efforts farmers have made to improve

their environmental performance, with around 90% of waterways now fenced off from stock.

We’ve also seen big strides forward in animal welfare. Farmers realise they need to be proactive and take the lead on these issues, because there are plenty of critics out there who will take any chance to bash you.

I see part of my job to be an advocate in Parliament and I’ll keep fighting in your corner. All of us need to keep talking to our urban cousins, reminding them of what we’ve achieved. We’ve got some very exciting opportunities and challenges ahead of us. The world population is going to reach 9 billion by 2050 and as they get wealthier, they will want more and more of the protein we produce.

To meet this challenge we need to encourage young people into this industry. By 2025 it’s estimated we’ll need another 50,000 new positions filled, and around half of those will require a tertiary qualification.

On that note, earlier this month I launched a new Young Enterprise programme happening in schools across New Zealand.
