Wairarapa College Thriving, student centred and future focussed

The regional final, to be held in Wellington on Saturday, February 24, is the second of seven similar contests being held across New Zealand.

These regional finals will decide the contestants for the grand final to be held in Invercargill in July.

Vet student Emma Dangen hopes years of studying at Massey University will help her outsmart the boys. The 23-year-old is in the final year of a Bachelor of Veterinary Science.

“Competing has always been a dream of mine,” she said.

Emma’s brother Tim is competing in the Northern Regional Final.

Three finalists from Marton Young Farmers; Michael McCombs, club vicechairman Will Taylor, and Lachlan Fee, have each earned a place in the regional final. Michael is contract milking in Kimbolton, Will is a Feilding-based technical field representative for PGG Wrightson, and Lachlan is in his second season managing a 600 cow dairy farm at Opiki.

“This will be my last chance at winning,” he said.

It will be Dylan Brunton’s first time competing in a regional final. He has a Bachelor of Science majoring in ecology and zoology, and is 2IC on a 510 cow dairy farm at Cardiff.

“I really enjoy the networking side of the contest,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet people.”

They’ll go up against Kieran McCahon, who recently completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Massey University.

The regional final is being held at Crawford Green, Miramar. The evening show, hosted by Te Radar, will be at the Wellington College.

It is the 50th anniversary of the iconic agricultural competition, which was first held in 1969.

Miko Hayashi and Stacia Jensen believe in a clean and green environment and taking care of our farms and rural properties. Utilising the wax from honey bee hives to create wax wraps is one way they are helping the environment.

tacia originates from the United States and has lived in New Zealand for 10 years and Miko was born in India and raised in Australia.

The couple met at a yoga retreat in Coromandel and they now call New Zealand home with baby Kio. “We were travelling around New Zealand and felt inspired by the beauty and were determined to reduce our plastic use and impact on the

environment and the idea flourished,” says Stacia.

“At the time I was teaching yoga, and the idea to create something natural really appealed to us. We already recycle and reduce our caustic use as much as possible and we decided to pursue the wrap idea and it became serious.

“Bees are incredible, and they lend some of their magical property to the wax which helps us. They are awesome

creatures — they pollinate our plants and pastures which helps create the oxygen we breathe. We use local wax as much as possible and when a bee flies by we often wonder if that bee has made the wax we use.”

The couple found the wax they originally used didn’t work well and there was a lot of frustration with the original recipe.

“Miko found a great recipe and we changed the wax we used,” says Stacia.

“We source as much wax as possible locally and started selling our Lilybee wraps at a farmers’ market. Farmers are enjoying having our wrap for their food whilst out working, and being in touch with nature and the environment they appreciate having an alternative to plastic.” The wraps are reusable and Miko says that element appeals to country folk.

“It is hard to do anything without plastic being involved. Just look at the shelves in your local supermarket — everything is covered in plastic, even fruits and vegetables are shrink-wrap packaged and bagged,” he says.

“Farmers appreciate having a natural product and it is a way to connect with bees. There are lots of types of wax just as there is many types of honey.”

Stacia says people trying to make wraps

at home can be disappointed by the results because different waxes have different properties but they are all antiseptic and antibacterial.

“Airtight seals can be created around containers with wax wraps, and they are great for workers making hay or silage or bringing in stock. Put in a chilly bin and you are good to go for the day. Even the honey smell is welcomed by those who use them. The wraps help cheese stay fresh for longer and it helps hold extra large sandwiches together. One couple wasn’t sure how it would work for them until they wrapped half an onion and forgot it was in the fridge for a few weeks. It came out totally fine and now they have a set each.”

All products are hand made — from mixing the ingredients — to melting it down and creating the recipe — the mixture is also applied to the cotton by hand.

“You need to be careful with the process as wax won’t come off if you get it on things like your clothes. Each wrap should last at least a year with proper care. After use give it a wash with cool water and eco friendly detergent and keep it out of direct sunlight for quality control. You can easily make reusable bags for storing your snacks, herbs or salad leaves in the fridge. One

of my favourite uses is making a bag to place fresh flowers in as a gift. Add a little bit of water and paper and it won’t seep through the wax. “We sell online at our Lilybee store and enjoy connecting with customers and providing a quality natural product.

RAISES VITAL FUNDS

Since its launch in 1984, the IHC New Zealand Calf Scheme fast gained the support of the dairy industry. More than 4,000 calves are donated annually, raising over $1.4 million.

T

aranaki dairy farmer Norm Cashmore initially dreamed up the calf scheme concept, offering a pair of gumboots to every farmer donating a calf to the Taranaki branch of IHC. When Blenheim dairy farmer, IHC volunteer and parent Mick Murphy heard about scheme, he visited Taranaki to see Norm’s vision in action. Mick was involved in the Marlborough branch of IHC and believed the scheme would work nationally. He convinced the New Zealand Council of IHC fundraising committee to trial the scheme and in 1983 was given permission for a pilot project in eight branches. Farmers were asked to donate calves to IHC and were given a pair of gumboots in return. When

the trial was completed, 770 calves had been donated and $110,000 raised.

The scheme was launched nationwide the following year. Mick continued as scheme organiser until his retirement in 1996.

IHC national fundraising manager Greg Millar said the scheme is a vital fundraiser.

“Rural families rely on IHC for services for programmes funded by donations such as community events and support, advocacy, volunteering programmes and the library, which means everyone in the country has the same access to information that can make a huge difference.”

crucial support for people with an intellectual disability and their families,” he said.

Dairy farmers raise a calf or calves until weaning, and a pink IHC ear tag is given to the farmer to identify the IHC calf. Calves are sold at a weaner fair each year through the PGG Wrightson livestock trading network.

IHC coordinates the pickup time and place for the calves with the donating farmers, to get them to the PGG Wrightson sale days.

“Some farmers also choose to donate the value of a calf to IHC - a virtual calf,” said Greg.

PGG Wrightson has been involved in the scheme since its inception, offering expertise and advice over the years to help develop it.

“PGG Wrightson has provided generous, long-term sponsorship and support for over 30 years. This is one of the longest-running sponsorships in New Zealand (for over 30 years) and definitely in the rural community.”

The sponsorship support covers key costs of the programme, allowing most of the farmer’s money to go directly to the work of IHC. Although the majority of the funds raised are from the sale of calves, the scheme was expanded in 2008 to include all livestock. This has enabled sheep and beef farmers to donate part

of the proceeds from the sale of their livestock to IHC. “IHC is looking to expand this further into the rural communities around New Zealand in the next two to three years.

“By expanding the scheme to include farmers other than the loyal dairy sector, the potential number of people donating animals grows and IHC’s ability to provide crucial support for people with intellectual disabilities is enhanced,” said Greg.

“The number of farmers involved has remained relatively static over recent years, and we are tremendously grateful to each and every one.

“We would like to honour Sir Colin Meads’ vision to extend the scheme beyond the dairy community and will be focusing on this next year, and in the years to come.”

The legendary ‘Pinetree’ Meads, a former All Black between 1957 and 1971, was a supporter of the calf scheme since 1974 and patron from 2002, until he passed away last year.

When Colin announced he was taking a two year break from the sport in 1974, a delegation from the Hamilton IHC branch met with Colin. Soon afterwards he was head of a newly-formed King Country sub-branch.

As rugby wasn’t considered a professional sport at that time, there were rules around fees. Colin and the

IHC branch set up a special account into which he donated the proceeds from his many speaking engagements. In 1988 this money went towards buying a farm in Te Kuiti for people with intellectual disabilities, to provide employment and teach farming skills. The four hectare smallholding, called Pinetree Farm, is still owned by IHC and used as accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities.

“IHC’s mission started nearly 70 years ago with families who were unhappy with the lack of opportunities

for their children and others with intellectual disabilities,” said Greg.

“They set up IHC, and changed the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families in New Zealand. The change continues today, but people with intellectual disabilities in your community still need your help to have the same opportunities as everyone else,” he said.

Nuffield international studies generates ideas

As part of his year as a Nuffield scholar, Mat Hocken spent several months travelling internationally. Now he is now busy preparing his research reports.

T

he Manawatu dairy farmer grew up on the family dairy farm near Colyton, attending local schools before heading to Canterbury University, where he graduated with a double degree in law and commerce.

Postgraduate studies at Cambridge University followed, graduating with a Master of Arts in politics.

In 2004 Mat took up work in a Brussels-based consultancy firm, specialising in European Union policy and politics.

Five years later, he moved to Sydney and worked as a senior advisor for a government-owned trade finance agency — part of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

He and his wife, Jana, returned to the family farm in 2013. The property, Grassmere, has been in the Hocken

family for more than 125 years. Mat’s Nuffield scholarship took him to a number of countries, with the first stop in Brazil for an eight-day Contemporary Scholars Conference with 70 scholars from around the world.

This was followed by six weeks of travel as part of the Global Focus Programme to Chile, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and Italy.

Mat also undertook two individual study tours to the United States, Ecuador, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Israel.

Travelling across these countries, Mat visited a full range of agricultural and horticultural enterprises from dairy, grain, poultry, pig, tobacco, potato, insect, vertical, and mussel farms to honey processors, orchards, vegetable growers, tulip greenhouses,

Mat said the Nuffield scholarship provides a massive personal development experience.

“It gives you a deeper understanding of yourself — how you communicate, how you manage stress, your leadership style, and what is important to you in life.

“When travelling with a group of 10 people, we had 3-4 meetings a day for six weeks.”

“We were flying together, bussing together, eating breakfast, lunch and dinner together, staying in hotels together,” he said.

“At times you are mentally stretched, tired, and you might have something going on at home, but the experience really challenges you to manage all that and continue to perform.

“I loved every minute of it. You learn a lot about yourself, and you really grow in that kind of environment.”

The biggest challenge during Mat’s travels was being away from his family, which includes two young daughters, for extended periods.

“That was really hard and most scholars find that one of the biggest challenges.”

He said the farm operated very successfully while he was away.

“We have an excellent team who took responsibility and delivered some very good results.”

Mat also acknowledges the work his family put into the farm, and their help to look after his daughters while he was overseas. He found the international studies were a fantastic means to

“We were constantly bumping into new ideas and inspirational people,” he said.

“It was a barrage of experiences in a short time, a fantastic way to spark your thinking and motivate change.

“I have a long list of ideas for my business, as well as some projects that are already under way, which are related to my research project.”

Mat’s main area of study and Nuffield research topic is agri-innovation.

“I found it fascinating researching my topic on innovation in agriculture.

“Innovation is a buzzword right now, however, the number of new ideas and new business models being generated across the world in food and agriculture is quite breathtaking.”

Mat’s research went in-depth into some of these examples of innovation, and their potential to disrupt current models of production.

He spent time considering what enabled innovation and what were the favourable conditions which saw innovation flourish.

“I visited places like Silicon Valley, Israel and the Netherlands and spoke

to innovative farmers, researchers and supportive businesses.”

Mat thought about the cultural context of each of these places and how the ideas and platforms they adopted would work in New Zealand.

“And about how we can apply our own unique ‘New Zealand innovative way’ to meet the challenges we face in agriculture.”

Mat is due to submit his research reports to Nuffield New Zealand by February 28.

He will then present his report at the Nuffield Conference in May.

Sheep springing forward

New Zealand has specialised in meat and wool sheep for the last 150 years, whilst Europe uses milking breeds.

“Globally, sheep milk is a US$8billion industry. In Europe they are blown away that we aren’t milking sheep, and it’s a tragedy as we are phenomenal at dairy products and renowned for animal husbandry in sheep.”

The Spring Sheep farm has more than 2,000 sheep and utilises stateof-the-art technology to ensure the milk is kept at the highest quality possible.

“We use modern, world-class low

agitation systems and protect milk quality every step of the way. The milk is held at less than two degrees Celsius,” says Nick.

Lambing is from August 1, and the milking season finishes around the end of March. The production is 15-20 ewes per hectare, similar to a system three or four dairy herd.

“People sensitive to regular cow’s milk, generally don’t have trouble consuming sheep milk. Sheep milk is naturally gentle on the stomach and has up to twice the amount of calcium and protein, and it tastes delicious too.

“Creating the optimum New Zealand farming system for dairy sheep and growing an industry is our goal. People in the Mediterranean and Asia grew up on alternative dairy, and are not

surprised at its quality nutrition and digestibility benefits. Sheep milk does have advantages over traditional dairy operations, and research shows significant environmental benefits too.

“In terms of genetics, the normal New Zealand sheep will produce 60-120 litres per year. We haven’t had access to the top dairy genetics, but MPI recently enabled high-performance sheep to be imported and they can produce 400 litres across flocks — or up to 1,000 litres in top performers per year, making a farming system economically viable.”

The PGP Sheep — Horizon Three programme has been established for long term innovation. It plans to build an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable sheep milking industry targeting $200M-$700M in sales by 2030.

The programme has gained positive results and has had a great response to a tailored nutrition programme that doubled milk yield on a per ewe basis.

“New Zealand sheep have adapted to our environment for wool and meat.

We need systems to allow dairy sheep to thrive here.

“Our pasture is one of our advantages, but we are researching other needs such as nutrition and indoor housing,” says Nick.

“The current exporting sheep milk farms run 2,000-4,000 sheep. That scale is not accessible to the normal farmer due to farm size so within the PGP programme, we are launching two smaller pilot sites in Cambridge.

“A lot of farms are around 40 hectares but no longer viable, as cow dairy sites due to economic and environmental

Identifying red clover pest

A red clover pest discovered and formally identified in Auckland in October 2016, has now been found right across the country.

The red clover casebearer moth (Coleophora deauratella) discovery set off alarm bells and prompted a nationwide monitoring campaign. Special pheromone traps were distributed to red clover growers across the country over this summer’s clover growing and flowering period.

“Traps were placed on farms from the lower North Island to the south of the South Island,” says FAR Seed Research manager Richard Chynoweth.

“The results are not good news for red clover growers, with moths being found on farms, roadsides and other areas everywhere from Wairarapa to Southland.

“As it was first identified in Auckland, we can assume they will be found across the North Island as well. Given the numbers and spread of this pest, it seems likely that it has been here for quite a while.

“My guess is at least a decade and could have been affecting red clover seed yields for several years.”

Red clover casebearer is a small moth (about 8mm long) and is very similar to two other species of clover casebearer moth (Coleophora spp) that are already well established in white clover, however it’s principal host is red clover.

Adult moths lay eggs on developing red clover flower heads and once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the florets to feed, destroying the growing seed. As the larvae grow, they adhere themselves to a chewed off floret, using it like a cape or case for protection and camouflage. Feeding damage to seeds can severely impact on crop yields.

“Not a lot is known about red clover casebearer in New Zealand,” says Mr Chynoweth.

“We will continue to monitor its spread, but we need to understand its life cycle and exactly how that links with the red clover growth cycle. Once we have a clearer idea of that, we can start to consider control options, so that arable farmers can continue to grow this specialist crop.

“We carried out initial laboratorybased insecticide trials and the results indicate that some insecticides currently registered for use in clover

crops are effective against red clover casebearer moth.”

To check crops for the presence of red clover casebearer — inspect flowers looking for millimetre-sized holes chewed into the base of individual florets, or distinctive black droppings,

also at the base of the florets.

You may also see the casebearer moth larvae, which look like small red-brown cigars on the flowers. If evidence of casebearer is found, discuss management with your crop agrichemical advisor.

While there is no indication that the disease is present beyond the areas currently identified, checking for other possible regional clusters is essential to building a complete picture of the disease in New Zealand.

The programme will involve testing three milk samples from every dairy farm. One sample will be taken from bulk milk as part of the regular sampling process at milk collection.

Farmers will also be required to provide two samples from ‘discard milk’ (milk unsuitable for collection, for example, from cows with mastitis). Mycoplasma bovis is more easily identified in milk taken from otherwise sick animals, which makes testing of the discard milk a valuable surveillance tool.

The extended milk testing programme enhances the existing nationwide Mycoplasma bovis surveillance activity, which includes tracing of animal movements from infected and suspect farms, vets looking for signs of the disease, testing of any animals with clinical signs, and testing all mastitis milk sent to laboratories.

Mycoplasma bovis is not a food safety risk. It is a disease that affects animal welfare and production and

Cellar door closing soon at Pohangina Valley Estate After 19 years developing a vineyard and producing award-winning wines, the team at Pohangina Valley Estate are offering plenty of specials before they close the cellar door.

Husband and wife, Nick and Bronwyn Dymock, initially established the vineyard in 2000. Bronwyn’s sister, Fiona McMorran, joined the familyowned venture soon afterwards.

Pohangina Valley Estate produced its first vintage in 2004 and went on to receive awards in Hong Kong, Australia, and at New Zealand’s prestigious Bragato wine competition. The estate’s wines have been exported to China and Mongolia.

The vineyard has been one of the few in New Zealand making a Chardonnay/ Pinot Gris blend. It was also one of a handful nationwide using Diam corks as closures. Fiona said this feature was recommended by their winemaker to ensure the quality of the wine during cellaring.

“All of our varietals are single vineyard wines and made to cellar for up to 10 years.”

A large part of the trio’s success has been attributed to the hands-on intensive approach to the management of the vineyard, and the skill and experience

Fiona said as their estate wines do not contain any animal products they are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Along with the main varieties of wine produced; Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, other blends have also been released including the Beaujolaisstyle red called Totara Reserve.

This wine, named after the local reserve in the Pohangina Valley, is made from an unidentified grape, which was DNA-tested at the University of California, Davis. It is now registered there as Pohangina Red. Nick, Bronwyn and Fiona are not planning to sell the vineyard.

The value of science The Plant & Food Research team that took on the devastating Psa-V disease and won, are the recipients of the Prime Minister’s top science prize.

Members of the winning team, led by Dr Bruce Campbell, were awarded the prize worth $500,000.

“When Psa was discovered at a Te Puke orchard in 2010, that could have meant the end of the kiwifruit industry,” says Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman.

“The Plant & Food Research team got their experts on the ground in the Bay of Plenty and the result was the new gold kiwifruit cultivar, now sold around the world as Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit.”

Forty eight million trays of SunGold were sold last season, with an export value of $686 million — up 70 per cent on the previous year and increasing by about 10 million trays a year.

“This really shows the value of science and research in the growing horticulture industry,” says Mr Chapman.

“The fact that in New Zealand we have such brilliant scientists that can turn the potential collapse of an industry into it rising from the ashes to be better than ever before is something we should not only be proud of, but something we should invest more money into.

“Plant & Food Research stood behind the kiwifruit industry in one of its darkest hours, when Psa was at its worst. The only way forward for the kiwifruit industry was through new varieties that were more Psa tolerant and through new orchard husbandry, and Plant & Food

Fresh green fodder made easy Imagine growing up to three tonnes or more of fresh green and highly nutritious feed for your livestock every day in the hottest summer or the wettest winter.

In each sprouting room (about the size of a 6.1m shipping container), plastic trays are placed on aluminum racks onto which seed (predominantly barley or wheat) is spread. In five to six days that seed has grown to a fully edible plant, (roots and all), weighing seven times or more the weight of the dry barley seed. While the growth is impressive, the bioavailability change is even more so.

The desirable nutritional changes that occur during sprouting are mainly due to the breakdown of complex compounds into a more simple form,

transformation into essential constituents and the breakdown of nutritionally undesirable constituents.

Sprouts provide a good supply of Vitamins A, E and C, plus B complex.

Like enzymes, vitamins serve as bioactive catalysts to assist in the digestion and metabolism of feeds and the release of energy. However, vitamins are very perishable and, in general, the fresher the feeds eaten, the higher the vitamin content. The vitamin content of some seeds can increase by up to 20 times their original value within several days of sprouting.

Fodder NZ transportable growing rooms may be linked together in series, (up to six in each series link) with two linked rooms producing around a tonne of green feed a day.

With a 340 hectare beef block to run single-handedly, Kaiwaka farmer Marty Roest has to manage his time carefully. The farm currently has around 23km of wire and batten fences and 32km of four-wire electric fences, so the hours he spends on fence building and maintenance can add up significantly.

After seeing the Stockade ST400i Cordless Fencing Stapler in action at last year’s Fieldays, Marty says the decision to purchase one was easy.

deserving and inspiring young man.”

She had no connection to primary industry whilst she was growing up and decided in her final year of high school that agriculture was her passion.

“I grew up on a lifestyle block and had a couple of horses and a few Ag day pet lambs. I started farming when I left high school and I worked on sheep and beef farms, and in the kiwifruit industry. I then had time overseas and started my business when I came home,” she says.

“I love being outdoors and being a part of the biggest industry we have in the country and I enjoy the challenges.

“I joined Young Farmers because I saw it as an amazing opportunity to network and further my career options and development. Lisa says her peers encouraged her ‘to have a go’ at the competition and the results proved any fears she had to be completely unfounded.

New Zealand Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland described Lisa as ‘a real role model’ and he hopes that her success will encourage other young women to participate in the FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

“I farmed in South Canterbury for a while and enjoyed the wide open spaces, the animals and being able to be by myself. I was a shepherd general and we had sheep, dairy grazing beef, bull beef and a little bit of cash crop. It was a great mixture of everything and full of experiences. I was responsible for day-to-day jobs and managed the property when the owners were away.

“I also worked in Waikato dairy farming and calf rearing. I love the industry and believe that if you are a female, you are only limited by your imagination with where you can go.”

She says one challenges she faces on the farm is physical strength but with modern technology it isn’t really a problem.

“You just have to think harder and smarter and choose the correct tools, rather than just sweat it out. The guys help you if they are around, but the help goes both ways — it is real team effort. At times the guys may need my help — such as when they get a tractor stuck — it is definitely a two way street.

“Farming is a great career option, there are so many pathways in the industry.

You don’t have to be milking cows at 5am in the morning, there are so many other opportunities. If you look around at the options, ask questions and talk to other farmers it can be quite easy to decide which area you may like to develop in.

“Starting my own business was really challenging but it has opened up a lot of new ideas and pathways for me.

“I would like to work my way into farm ownership and develop my own sheep milk business.

“One of my lecturers at university started a sheep milk brand producing milk, cheese and ice cream.

“I like the idea as it has environmental benefits compared to other types of farming and that helps it be more positive.”

highly skilled engineers and the team can do as little or as much of the conversion as the client requires.

“The units can be fully insulated and lined, and fitted with toiletries and sanitation. The framework and locking mechanisms we use make them highly secure, and plumbing and an electrical system can be installed where necessary. The containers can also be modified with additional shuttered windows.” When these windows are not in use they can be secured keeping your belongings safe.

“Inside a modified Spacewise shipping container you will see little difference between the steel container and a traditionally constructed building.”

A solution from residential through to schools, small business and workplace gantries, the containers can be used as storage units for dangerous chemicals or animal feed as well.

“The life span for a container travelling around the world on a boat is approximately 25 years and on land the life span is much longer,” says Roxane.

“People may be concerned about how the unit will look in years to come.

All buildings require maintenance over time and these are no different. If you don’t look after it, it will deteriorate.

“It will need washing and eventually

repainting to keep it looking good and protected, but as they are not sitting on a boat being attacked by salt air they won’t fall apart from corrosion so easily.”

Keeping the structure elevated off the ground by 150-200mm helps keep it in good condition as the air can circulate around it and keeping it painted certainly helps with the appearance, and protects it from the elements. If they are in the country and not by the ocean this means the salt air won’t corrode them.

“The benefit is you can relocate them on the property or take them with you if you move. They do not cost a lot of money to purchase and if you get 10-15 years’ use you would be pretty happy.”

Freedom camping out of sorts

Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) believe that the lack of enforcement and education around freedom camping has led to ongoing issues across the country.

“This summer has been great for both domestic and foreign tourists, however, freedom camping has once again caused angst in our rural communities,” says RWNZ national president Fiona Gower.

“Overseas experience shows us that farms can be affected by disease outbreak such as E coli, through waste left behind by freedom campers and any loss of income is not acceptable to farming families. Adverse effects on human health, and that of our environment are clearly issues for all New Zealanders.

“RWNZ supports the concerns of those communities affected by large numbers of disrespectful freedom campers, especially in tourist hot spots.

“We believe that the government needs to ensure that the legislation is fit for purpose so that rural areas especially road reserve, paper roads and private land are protected from the adverse effects of freedom camping,” says Ms Gower.

Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis has called a meeting with mayors from districts across the country to discuss solutions to issues around freedom camping.

“New Zealanders value their right to freedom camp and we want international visitors to explore our country — but there has to be respect for our natural environment,” Mr Davis says.

“Responsible freedom campers are welcomed in our regions and the vast majority are respectful, but there are problems in some areas.

“I’ve been hearing dissatisfaction with the current situation — with complaints relating to noise, litter, human waste, overcrowding and blocked access to public spaces.

In the past ten years, the number of international visitors doing at least some freedom camping during their stay has risen from around 30,000 to 115,000 annually. This is in addition to the many Kiwis who freedom camp, such as trampers, cyclists, hunters, surfers, seasonal workers and the 70,000 members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association.

“The issues are complex and there’s no easy fix, so central and local government need to take a collaborative approach and find solutions that will work for everyone. For tourism to

continue growing in New Zealand and remain successful over the longer term, we need to listen to our communities and get this right.”

Pasture holds the key to growth There is a variety of opinion when it comes to the best pastures for the best production, usually prompted by regional experience, but what is certain, is the need to consider pasture quality as well as quantity in feeding livestock.

Getting a contractor with experience is half the battle when planning new pasture and preparing the land for regrassing and fodder crops.

Over time the buyers of New Zealand meat have come to expect a standard, and in more and more cases importers are buying to end customer specification in terms of carcase weights and timing.

As stocking rates have dropped, and per animal performance targets have become more important, pasture quality has become a critical constraint to achieving potential growth rates.

Findings from New Zealand and international research have been refined

by Beef and Lamb New Zealand who also offer in-depth pasture advice on their website. Here farmers can find a simple method of assessing pasture quality in the field for everyday use on farm, and in instructing contractors on their vision.

Visual assessments of dead matter, legume content, grass leaf and grass stem are turned into quantitative estimates of nutritive value by the computer software package Q-Graze, which adds the effects of grazing to

estimate the growth of young animals on that pasture.

Measuring the nutritive value of a pasture can be done by direct laboratory assessment or by indirect visual assessment. Laboratory measurements include metabolisable energy (ME), digestibility, fibre and protein. How much do animals eat and why? What drives potential intake? The potential feed intake of animals is determined by physiological state (e.g. pregnancy, lactation, sex) and genetics. The animals’ health and the feed offered determine whether the potential is reached.

Intake is influenced by the amount of pasture offered to the animal, commonly estimated as pasture cover, pre- and post-grazing dry matter yield or height.

The more that is offered, the more that can potentially be eaten, up to a maximum where increased pasture dry matter yield has no more influence on intake and live weight gain.

This has to be balanced by the need to keep pasture quality high, ensure good regrowth and maintain economic stocking rates.

The by-product, particularly of dairying, is a great fertiliser when properly processed and there are a number of specialist firms offering advice and equipment to enhance effluent properties. Effluent contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S) and trace elements that you’d normally pay for to have applied to pasture.

The average dairy herd of 250 animals produces the same amount of effluent as a medium-sized rural town, and carefully ponded and spread correctly, the product of 100 cows can save thousands of dollars on the farmer’s bottom line.

While it might be ‘liquid gold’, water troughs need to be protected from spray sources as well as waterways, where the rule is to keep the distribution 50 metres away.

Soil can only filter so much effluent and therefore application depths should be adjusted accordingly to reflect soil and weather conditions.

Too much effluent can kill pasture – especially where effluent has ‘ponded’ on the soil surface, as well as pollute nearby streams and rivers as it runs off paddocks into waterways. Then

It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. A report is then prepared for the farm owner or manager.

Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WoF’ assessors.

Forestry in this region

In the southern North Island — south of a line from New Plymouth, through Ohakune to Dannevirke — there are about 160,000 hectares of commercial forests, mostly pine.

About 30 per cent of this area is in blocks of less than 40 hectares, owned by between 1,500 to 2,000 land owners. This type of ownership makes the southern North Island different from the rest of New Zealand.

About 25,000 hectares of forestry is in corporate ownership, a small percentage by New Zealand standards.

Five of the forestry corporates here have FSC or PEFC certification — internationally recognised systems for acknowledging sustainability in social, environmental as well as economic terms. These forests are managed by local staff in Bulls, Masterton, Upper Hutt and Whanganui.

The balance of the regional forestry estate is owned by larger farms, smaller forestry companies and forestry syndicates. This creates another difference from the national picture in that an additional 2,000 to 3,000 people from all walks of life have shares in syndicated forestry schemes, such as those managed by Forest Enterprises.

So, among farmers, farm foresters and investors there are between 4,000 and 5,000 people in this region who are ‘forestry people’ with an interest in the land and trees.

A further 1,000 people work in the forests in this region — over 500 in harvesting, 220 in log transport and the balance in silviculture, ports, road construction and forest management.

Most live in rural towns and contribute to the rural economy.

Forestry is a sustainable, viable industry in rural New Zealand, particularly on poorer soils and classes of land.

Forests produce a good financial return on investment. In 2017 in this region, we combined to harvest, transport and sell nearly 2.2 million tonnes of logs to domestic and overseas customers, producing over $220 million worth of log sales revenue, which was spent or reinvested in the region.

Also, the trees already growing mean that our harvest can increase to about four million tonnes over the next five years. In other words, it can double.

We are short of trained people now.

We have career and job opportunities from NCEA Level 2 to degree study and want to interest young people in forestry careers.

The environmental benefits are that forests improve water quality by

providing a natural filtration mechanism.

Stag demand reflects confidence Confidence in the future profitability of venison and velvet production has flowed through to the market for sire stags, with strong sales reported throughout the country.

Breeders repor t a marked improvement on last year’s results and although no stags broke the $100,000 mark, average prices were up strongly for most sales, several by more than 50 per cent. Overall clearance rates were 94 per cent, compared with 83 per cent last year.

“Venison schedule prices to farmers normally peak each year in October before the last chilled shipments leave for Europe for the annual game meat season,” says Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ) chief executive Dan Coup.

“The drivers in the market remain unchanged from last year, namely lower production in New Zealand, successful diversification by marketers into new year-round markets and very strong demand for venison from the United States, both for grilling cuts and manufacturing grades.”

DINZ Asia market manager Rhys Griffiths says demand for velvet from the two main markets, Korea and China, has been strong this season. Prices have climbed back to levels reached two seasons ago, before changes in Chinese hygiene regulations led to a loss of buyer confidence unrelated to the longterm demand for New Zealand velvet.

“Total velvet exports reached $43 million in the 2015/16 season, increasing to $59 milion in the 2016/17 season. With a lift in the velvet price and the forecast increase in production, another increase in the value of velvet exports is expected this season.”

Two new entrants to the sire breeding business, Rupert Red Deer near Geraldine and Forest Road Farm in central Hawke’s Bay, had their inaugural stag sales this summer. Each had

strong sales with high clearance rates, averaging nearly $5,000 and just over $11,000 respectively — both specialise in breeding for velvet antler. With the venison schedule at an all-time high, demand for stags with high breeding values (BVs) for carcase growth rate has also been high.

Sires for venison production bred by Ruapehu Red Deer in the central North Island enjoyed a total clearance and an average price of nearly $7,000, up nearly one-third on last season.

Lochinvar stud, Te Anau, sold all 25 wapiti bulls on offer at an average $5,400, 10 per cent up. Manapouri’s Connemara Wapiti had a total clearance and prices up 46 per cent, and a $38,000 bull sold at the annual Tikana Wapiti sale, a record price for the stud.

Interim figures for the year ended December 31 2017 reveal that females have dropped below 48 per cent of the total slaughter, a good indication that the national hind breeding herd is being rebuilt — putting an end to a gradual decline that began in 2005.

“DINZ is receiving a few requests for information from new farmers entering the industry. With consistently strong venison and velvet prices, the industry is in a confident mood,” says Mr Coup.

Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware.

Once Prolan is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long-term protection. Bikes can be water blasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value.
