The Garden to Table programme has been running for eight years and is committed to changing the way children approach and think about food.

Local body nominations have closed Nominations for local body elections are now closed and all but one constituency will need votes to ensure their seats.

Horizons Regional Council received 22 nominations for 12 seats. A surge of last minute nominations means that all except Manawatu-Rangitikei constituency candidates will need the votes to ensure their seat at the table.

Plan to boost economy Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy have announced a detailed action plan to boost the Manawatu-Whanganui regional economy.

The Manawatu-Whanganui Economic Action Plan is part of the Government’s Regional Growth Programme, which is increasing jobs, incomes and investment in regional New Zealand.

“The Manawatu-Whanganui region is now showing encouraging signs of job growth,” Mr Joyce says.

“The latest Jobs Online report showed a 24.7 per cent increase in jobs advertised across the Manawatu/Whanganui/Taranaki region over the year to June 2016.

“The action plan looks to build on this growth and the region’s strengths in primary production and food innovation, while taking advantage of opportunities in fields such as tourism, aged care and business process outsourcing.

These opportunities were identified in the Manawatu-Whanganui

Growth Study released last year.

“The plan contains a set of tangible actions in these areas, underpinned by strategies to grow business and improve transport, digital connectivity and skills training.”

Mr Guy says other focus areas include sheep and beef, land and water use, manuka honey, realising Maori potential, fresh vegetables and poultry.

“The plan also offers Maori in the region an opportunity to leverage their strong presence in the primary industries to enhance the wellbeing of local iwi and promote sustainable land use.

“As part of this action plan $465,000 is going towards the delivery of primary sector initiatives.”

BAREFOOT NATURALLY

Although Carin Robinson had some involvement with horses when she was growing up, the opportunity to take this further didn’t arise until later.

F

our years ago Carin took the plunge and bought her first horse — a four-year-old, unhandled thoroughbred/quarter horse cross.

“Plenty of people were quick to tell me I was crazy, and rightly so, but within a year I had handled him and started him under saddle myself,” said Carin.

Carin now owns three horses.

The most recent is a young, unhandled stationbred.

“I had been trimming his dam’s feet for a while and the owners wanted to sell him but couldn’t do anything with him. So I offered to handle him and get the basics done so he could be on-sold.”

On the fourth day when Carin arrived to work with the horse, he was found in a ditch.

“We spent two hours getting him out and once he was out, he would not leave my side, so his owner gave him to me.”

Transitioning a horse from shod to barefoot

Carin’s interest in barefoot trimming developed when her partner’s horse returned to them after being leased out.

“He came back with slipper feet and two to four abscesses in every single foot, to this day, I have no idea how he remained on his feet.” she said.

Repairing the horse’s hooves required weekly, sometimes daily, adjustments to correct them.

“It became a matter of necessity for me to learn how to trim myself,” said Carin.

Under the guidance of qualified, skilled hoof trimmers, Carin learnt the necessary skills. She also undertook further research and study.

“I guess I kind of became addicted after that, hooves are really fascinating,” she said.

Carin began trimming her own horses’ hooves and then those of her friends. As word spread she soon found herself running her own business and has now been trimming professionally for just over a year. Her understanding of numerous methods has helped her to meet the requirements of individual horses. Through studying various areas of horsemanship, Carin has shaped her own version.

“I have a strong focus on gentle, calm, compassionate and empathetic handling of horses and this is what my clients seem to value the most, alongside my functional barefoot hoof care.”

Carin said the biggest advantage of barefoot trimming over shoeing is the ability for the hoof to flex. This flexion allows proper blood flow through the

hoof and legs, and promotes healthy growth without being impeded by a steel shoe.

“I have transitioned a few horses from shod to barefoot,” said Carin.

“The hoof is an amazing piece of anatomy that has a unique ability to adapt with the right supports such as diet, environment and trimming.”

Through her work as a barefoot hoof trimmer, Carin has found helping horses and humans extremely rewarding.

She particularly enjoys being able to help horses that farriers and vets consider will always be lame.

“It is really satisfying being able to work with these horses, have them walk away sound and see them continually improve over time.”

Carin has been asked to take on a Kaimanawa stallion from the next muster to compete in the Stallion Challenge.

“That’s not until 2018 but it’s something I’m definitely interested in doing.”

Recently Carin began full-time employment at Massey University’s Equine Parentage and Animal Genetics unit. She plans to continue with the barefoot trimming on a part-time basis and eventually make a living working with horses.

“Not just in hoof-care but I want to teach horses and inspire other people to work with horses in a more compassionate and empathetic way.

Anger and ego have no place around a horse,” she said.

“I’d like to help people find the joy and fun with horses.”

SPROUTING A GOOD LIFE

Murray Taylor is a fourth generation vegetable grower and has been growing Brussel sprouts with his wife Marcia in the rich soils of Mt Ruapehu since 1998.

“I

used to sell firewood to a greengrocer out at Waiouru and we used to save the money that we made.

“One day we asked him if there is anything we could grow for his shop. He suggested Brussel sprouts so we grew half an acre of them to see how they would go,” said Murray.

“We are now one of the main suppliers to the country. Sprouts were a good choice as I come from a background of growers and no one in our family grew them.

“They grow other crops including carrots, potatoes and cauliflower.”

The greengrocer couldn’t take all of the first crop so they forwarded the

remainder to Turners & Growers. “The following season we grew two and a half acres of sprouts and the next year we grew nine acres and bought five extra from a retiring grower and built up our sales from there.” The couple employ up to 11 staff during harvest season.

They have four children, the eldest is at Otago University.

“Our eldest loves to come back and help on the farm. All the children play an active role in the operation. They love getting out and being involved,” said Murray.

“The majority of our seeds come from Holland and we use Hills Nurseries in the Hawke’s Bay to grow them because the climate is more suitable for raising seedlings and they do a really good job.”

transported to Ohakune where they are immediately planted in the ground. They stay there for 150–200 days.

“During that time it is consistent maintenance. We continually look for weeds, insects, bacteria and nutrient deficiencies. Growing sprouts is like having children. They are a lot of work and they are very time consuming,” says Murray.

“Ninety per cent of the water that the plant takes up is for keeping itself cool.

They have a very deep tap root which grows to about one metre deep. It is a must that they have free draining soil or they will grow short and won’t perform so well, particularly in the wet.”

Murray says typically the Brussel sprouts should grow to waist height and they need to be in the ground before Christmas.

“Our main planting is mid October until mid December. Sprouts can grow in most climates. In the warm they do a fast explosive growth and can be a bit floppy. In the cold climate they grow more compact and tighter. You get a more dense bud.”

The bottom sprouts form and mature first and the buds spiral up the stem.

They are ready when the bottom buds are firm. The couple mostly mechanically harvest.

“We hand pick our early ones but the main crop is harvested by a selfpropelled machine. The machine cuts the plant at the base and workers put it through the stripper which cuts the buds off the stem.”

The buds are conveyed to a bin where they are pre-graded before returning to the shed for the final packout and

“We grow nine different varieties.

They are red or green and we supply three packhouses. Two in the Manawatu and one in Auckland.”

Murray recommends people try sprouts at meal times. They can be

added to meat dishes, eaten alone, roasted like a potato or mixed with bacon and onion. “They are a really nice additive and create a new flavour. They are nice shredded and steamed or stir fried in butter. Add a large tablespoon of peanut butter or almond for a nutty flavour. Brussel sprouts are full of nutrients and are very good for you.”

Choosing your colour If names like ‘thornton cream’ and ‘half pearl lustre’ strike fear into your heart, you are not alone.

The world of paint and colour can be an overwhelming one, but once you understand the basics, the results can be very rewarding. The colour you choose can affect the mood of a room and it is believed colour accounts for the majority of our response to an object or a place. This is called colour psychology and is important in the way we use it in our homes and workplaces.

Contrary to The Rolling Stones desire to paint that red door black, intense dark colours can be overpowering in a small space, so keep these to the larger rooms and consider using your favourite dark colour as a feature wall.

If you are after a stimulating social vibe for a dining room or lounge think about introducing a strong bold colour.

Light colours for these rooms can sometimes appear stark and cold.

If you aren’t sure where to begin, start small, perhaps in the bathroom or a hallway. Often a good way to choose a colour is to select a favourite from some artwork, furniture or accessory and match this to your walls.

Consider what kind of mood you hope to achieve in this space. If it is the bedroom do you want it to be light and dreamy or warm and intimate. If it is a child’s room think about the personality of the child. Are they energetic and active or calm and thoughtful? Do you want to create an active space or a

Pay careful attention to the lighting in the room. Remember natural lighting is the truest colour whilst fluorescent lighting brings out the blue tones.

Biodiversity forum welcomed Federated Farmers welcomes the new national biodiversity forum announced by minister Nick Smith at the Environmental Defence Society conference recently.

“One of the most challenging issues for councils and communities is improving the protection of our native species on private land while respecting the reasonable rights of owners to use their land for farming, forestry and other economic activities. This initiative is about bringing environmental groups and landowners together to develop clearer national policy on protecting the plants and animals that make New Zealand special,” said Mr Smith.

Federated Farmers spokesperson for biodiversity Chris Allen says we now have the opportunity to come to a common understanding of the pressures and priorities for biodiversity, on land and in water.

“From here we chart a way forward. Part of this will be agreeing on a national policy statement,” said Mr Allen.

“Alongside that, we have the opportunity to look at how we can upscale ‘action on the ground’ partnerships.

“The vision and thinking around the recent predator free New Zealand announcement is an excellent start for tackling the key issues for native biodiversity on land and water,” said Mr Allen. The Cape to City project in Hawke’s Bay is an example — tackling

predator control and restoring plants and wildlife across 26,000 hectares of land between Hastings, Cape Kidnappers and south to Waimarama.

“The key to its success is a coordinated effort at scale with affordable technology that transforms how pest management takes place on farmland. We’re all for action, getting as many ‘troops on the ground’ to tackle the introduced pests and predators head on.”

Helping sore joints Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease with over 70 per cent affected at some time, often from middle age.

For me it struck much earlier. My hyper-flexible thumb joints meant that the joint cartilage was severely worn in my thirties. From my forties this caused significant problems limiting the use of my hands.

Now at 61 years old, I still have worn joints but have almost no symptoms. This is testimony to the combination of an anti-inflammatory diet and a supplement programme high in omega-3, antioxidants and joint support compounds, especially high doses of chondroitin and curcumin (turmeric).

Joint products with glucosamine and chondroitin have been available for 20 years and the past few years has seen more intensive research to assess the effectiveness of these compounds.

Older style formulations were heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate. This was probably because research published in Lancet in 2001 showed benefits from using glucosamine for (knee) osteoarthritis.

More recent research has focussed on the reasons why these compounds

seem to work. An excellent French study published in 2011 looked specifically at chondroitin sulphate and concluded: ‘CS treatment significantly reduced the cartilage volume loss in knee OA starting at six months of treatment. These findings suggest a joint structure protective effect of CS and provide new in vivo information on its mode of action in knee OA’ — Wildi et al, 2011, Annals of Rheumatic Diseases.

independent, funded by the taxpayer and expanding the envelope of good, healthy farming.

There were very little problems and I remember the most toxic product in the milking shed was the oil required to keep the separator running smoothly.

When we hit the mid 1980’s there was a radical change in farming based around corporate scientific systems and industrial farming coming out of the United States.

The first big shift I recognised was the introduction of maize as a supplementary feed for dairy and drystock. What sort of backward thinking was that? Maize causes acidosis in Ruminant animals resulting in mastitis. Maize and corn are for chickens, chickens do well on it, however Ruminants which are the bulk of our farming are designed to convert grass into milk and meat and they are really good at it, especially if there is plenty of clover on the farm.

I remember spring. When the alarm goes off, it’s like the starter’s gun for a day-long sprint. There are cows in the calving mob to check, newly born to match with mothers (then tag and record), milking, feeding calves, feeding cows, getting in newly calved cows, checking and treating sick animals, teaching new calves to feed, drafting cows into new mobs and maybe, if there’s time, trying to lift the old girl that went down (she may have to wait).

Spring is when the sleep account of every staff member is in overdraft and stress is at its highest. The one saving grace is that this period is relatively short. When you think you’ve had an absolute guts full and can take no more, it’s over.

Here are some ideas that may help.

When the dust settles, it’s good to have discussions with staff and analyse what your practices have been, both good and bad.

While everything is fresh in their minds, get their suggestions on ways to improve for next year. And while you’re at it, look ahead three months and together do a checklist of the tasks you’ll need to get through. Discussions like this turn mere employees into a committed team.

On my recent rounds with clients, I came across a number of issues you might include in your staff talks. Farmers are turning to home-grown supplements in the way of maize or grass silage.

Although these can reduce costs, watch out for nasty surprises; there is nothing worse than finding that a large percentage of the bales you stacked last year are spoiled due to holes from rough handling.

If it’s really wet and you have a grass shortage, utilise supplements for the short term to protect your grass and avoid pugging.

Be aware of dry matter: in particular, metabolisable energy and protein for your cows to get balance.

If you are feeding high amounts of maize at 8% protein, then a high protein to counteract this may be needed (such as soya meal @ 48% protein or DDG @ 28%). Search for a blend and get advice while you have your own feed to mix it with.

During a wet spring, a lot of sulphur will have leached out of the soil, so consider applying nitrogen to get your feed growing. Ammonium sulphate is a good option since it will deliver sulphur and nitrogen that will hang around and be fully utilised. There are publications showing it will grow grass at 6 degrees soil temp.

But don’t use urea. Urea needs at least 10 degrees to be effective and won’t grow grass in wet and cold conditions.

Here’s one thing I’m concerned about: the increasing numbers of farmers putting on lime in large amounts without first knowing where their soil’s calcium levels are at.

One farmer wasted money putting on three tonnes of lime per hectare when he only needed one. The real expense is not the lime, which is relatively cheap.

The cost is animal health. Excess calcium puts downward pressure on magnesium, which will have a negative effect on animal health.

Although the daily grind of spring may take your eye off the long-term picture, a phone call and some help may well make the next three months easier. I’m here if you need me.

Enhancing farm systems A brand new farming initiative — Extension 350 — is an innovative programme, the first of its kind for New Zealand. Designed to lift on-farm performance through improving farm systems and profitability through shared knowledge.

Extension 350 chairman, Ken Hames, is highly enthusiastic about the initiative’s potential.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Beef and Lamb, DairyNZ, Northland Inc and the Ministry of Primary Industries to work together to improve the region’s economy,” says Mr Hames.

The programme aims to have 350 Northland farms involved in four years and is modelled on having clusters of five farms working together with business advice and direction provided to a Target Farmer by an expert consultant, with that relationship encouraged by a Mentor Farmer. The expectation is that the Target Farmer similarly influences a group of Associated Farmers.

“Extension 350 has the ability to enhance farm systems to improve the profitability of the farms involved.

Northland Inc has been of great assistance in having independent economic evaluation of a grass roots project which has encouraged other funders to seriously consider the proposition. For the farmer — profitability equals choices — such as the flexibility to make decisions about future on-farm improvements, repaying debt or improving livelihood,” he says.

The pilot scheme which ran at Candy Farm in Okaihau from 2011 to 2014 saw local farmers Alister and Lyn Candy make management changes which have resulted in greater resilience and an

increase in profits of around $180,000 per annum.

Chris Neill of DairyNZ added that he was pleased to have partnered with the Northland Dairy Development Trust to support the Focus Farm and Partner Farm pilot projects which have proven the power of farmers supporting farmers to make on farm change.

“Extension 350 is the next step of

scaling up farmer driven initiatives to a large number of Northland farmers.

We anticipate this programme will make a significant contribution to growing Northland’s economy.”

Northland Inc Chief Executive David Wilson says “extension 350 is a priority project in the Tai Tokerau Northland

Economic Action Plan and we believe it has the potential to change the way we farm by giving more farmers the tools and profitability to embed sustainable practices in their farm systems.
