The annual contest, which recognises sustainable land management, environmental awareness, good business practices, and social and community responsibility, has become a major event on the rural calendar. The competition is facilitated by the New Zealand Farm Environment (NZFE) Trust.

Accolades for Feilding Farmers’ Market

Feilding Farmers’ Market has scored a hat trick, taking out the New Zealand Farmers’ Market of the Year Award for the third successive year.

The accolades kept flowing for Feilding during the recent 2014 Farmers’ Markets Awards: Raewyn Loader took out the Market Manager of the Year; Almadale Produce Limited won the ‘Dirt on the Roots’ category for its potatoes; and the ‘Best Food producer from the Kitchen Bench’ section went to Lancaster Citrus for marmalade made from its orchard produce.

Products from farmers’ markets around New Zealand were put to the taste test by judges and chefs Hester Guy and Julie Biuso, along with Farmers’ Markets New Zealand chairperson Chris Fortune.

Mrs Guy said judges found less reliance on preservatives in the bottles and more emphasis in the integrity of ingredients.

“The raw product is the hero, and the quality and flavours of these products is paramount.”

The New Zealand Farmers’ Market of the Year Award recognises community support and involvement in local farmers’ markets. Customers around New Zealand vote for both their favourite market and preferred stallholder.

Prize-winners were announced at the recent Farmers’ Market New Zealand conference held in Feilding.

Established by the Feilding Promotion’s Community Development team, Feilding Farmers’ Market is held each Friday in the town’s centre.

The market attracts up to 36 regular stallholders during the summer and 28 in winter.

Feilding Promotion chairman Michael Ford congratulated everyone involved with the Feilding Farmers’ Market.

“Feilding Promotion is incredibly proud of our market, and the successes of the market,” he said.

“The positive marketing publicity that the awards bring can’t be bought — priceless.

“A big thank you to everyone from Feilding Promotion.”

Around 40 independently owned and operated farmers’ markets are held around New Zealand with an estimated 50,000 customers supporting them each week.

“The attention to quality and freshness is what makes the difference, and you can find that in bucket-loads at farmers’ markets nationwide on a weekly basis,” said Mr Fortune.

The sight of a former favourite racehorse, in a state of neglect and in desperate need of a home after being given away by a trainer to an inexperienced owner, led Amy Whitney to set up Riverside Equine Rescue Retreat.

nd when another horse from the same stable, found in the backyard of a Masterton house, was so emaciated it collapsed on the float ride to its rescue home, Amy knew exactly which direction the rescue retreat needed to take.

“This made me realise there needed to be an ‘in-between’ someone to do the research into homes and to get the horses ready for new careers,” she said.

With a background of horse enthusiasts in her family, it was no surprise that Amy’s passion for horses and animals showed through from a young age. She rode at pony club throughout her school years, then gained a wide range of experience working with polo ponies, thoroughbreds, dressage horses, Standardbred racehorses, and rode for a leading New Zealand Parelli horseman. Amy also began an apprenticeship as a jockey but discontinued this due to weight issues.

She kept on riding trackwork however, and worked as a stablehand for several high profile New Zealand trainers.

Amy said the knowledge she has gained through watching and learning from leading horsemen and horsewomen has been invaluable.

“I’ve developed extremely light hands, a steady and stable seat, and have a calm, yet confident demeanour that reflects onto all the horses I ride.”

Amy’s experience and skills have helped her to retrain and rehabilitate numerous horses since setting up the equine rescue retreat in April 2012.

Located on a 40-acre leased property at Te Horo on the Kapiti Coast, the equine rescue retreat takes in a maximum of ten horses at a time for retraining.

“This is a personal restriction, but allows us to have enough funds and time to give the horses what they need,” said Amy. Horses arrive on the property from all over New Zealand.

“Some trainers send everything they retire to me.

“I get calls from all sorts of people in all sorts of situations every week.”

In the two years since setting up the equine rescue retreat, 108 horses have come through the gates for retraining.

Amy said the type of training depends on the horse.

“Mostly I just want them to be happy, relaxed and enjoy being ridden.”

Groundwork and desensitising plays an important part in the foundation work. Hacking out over roads, beaches, and farms follow, with games and other exercises in the arena.

A variety of volunteers also ride the horses and help work out what each horse is most suited to.

After each horse has completed a retraining programme, Amy advertises them for sale. Potential new owners visit the property to meet Amy and the horse they are considering buying.

“We then find them the most suitable home,” said Amy. Amy said the rewards are many when she is able to see a horse she has rescued, retrained and rehabilitated, being well cared for and enjoying leading a new life.

“Seeing that glimmer return to a sad horse’s eye, and watching a bond form between a new horse and rider — you couldn’t pay for that kind of happiness.”

Amy said she has also had to learn to be realistic. “At first, I wanted to save them all, and have since learnt that the best thing for some is to cross the rainbow bridge.

“Being the person that decides this fate can be really difficult at times, but I have to know deep down that I am doing the right thing.”

Amongst the group of volunteers who help out with the horses, is Amy’s best friend, Emmalee.

“She helps with absolutely everything, and I couldn’t do it without her,” said Amy. The equine rescue retreat is a not-forprofit organisation and relies solely on fundraising and donations.

School turns out top teams for AgriKids

South Makirikiri School has sent AgriKids teams to compete at regional and national level for the past 11 years, consistently ranking in the top placings.

T

he 158-student school, near Marton in the Rangitikei district, had its first taste of AgriKids at the inaugural competition in 2003.

Teacher Anne McDonald mentioned the event to her class of year seven and eight students at the school and the concept appealed to them.

The school entered three teams into the event, held in Wanganui, and one of the teams placed first. “I guess this was the beginning of AgriKids for South Makirikiri, as this success created an enthusiasm for students to enter in the following years,” said Anne.

South Makirikiri School was established in the mid 1800s after

local farmers cleared the land and built a schoolhouse. Many of these farmers’ descendants continue to farm in the area and generations of families have attended the school.

The secret to the school’s AgriKids success lays in a foundation of preparation, support, commitment and passion with students, staff, parents, and community members all rolling up their sleeves to get on with the task at hand. Students also learn new skills and have plenty of fun along the way.

Parents, students and teachers are all involved in preparing for AgriKids events with coaching commencing shortly after selection for a national event.

“In the past, students have cut and sold firewood, cleaned cars, and held discos to name a few,” said Anne.

Anne said the students have a very positive attitude towards AgriKids.

“They want to be involved in this kind of event as it represents their rural school environment.

“They like the challenges, the physical, written, and oral tasks.”

“The local community is most supportive as they see the value in seeing local students compete in a national event, representing their district.”

AgriKids teams are made up of three members. Recognising the strengths of each team member is an important aspect of the student-led event.

The enthusiasm for AgriKids has continued to build up over the years within the school and the surrounding community. Seven teams were entered in the regional event this year. South Makirikiri School is proving to be a force to be reckoned with through numerous placings at regional and national level.

On two occasions, the school’s teams have also scored hat tricks.

AgriKids project leader Josie Hampton said no other school has taken all the top three spots at regional level.

“So it’s pretty impressive,” she said.

“It’s great to see how committed and determined all the South Makirikiri School teams and teachers are towards the AgriKids competitions.

“As AgriKids is continually growing, we are seeing some very talented students competing and we are continually surprised at how competitors already know so much about agriculture.”

The agricultural annual baby boom is underway and the pressure is on as calves and lambs dominate the farming landscape over the next two months. Although a harrowing time for the farmer we all hope and pray the weather is at least favourable.

The comment from the contractor after cutting was that it was the first time ever on that tractor that he had had to drop to a lower gear to get the job done. Here is the proof, that if you can get the soil right, the grass will be more nutritious, with a thicker sword, resulting in strong healthy animals which should fetch a better price. It all comes back to the soil.

There’s a sense with some UTV off-roaders on the market that one feature alone has been chosen as the engineering goal of the exercise.

Whether it’s simply providing the most power, or the greatest speed, or the biggest towing capacity, this kind of arms race can end up very much like the one being waged by the ‘big three’ German car makers for maximum horsepower.

That’s why the Yamaha Viking is proving so popular. It’s not focussed on simply stump-pulling torque or flat-out speed. Yamaha’s engineers have taken it back to first principles, making everything about the new Viking centre on the driver and passengers.

That’s passengers, plural, because one of the first things Yamaha realised was that many jobs around the farm need more than two pairs of hands.

With three seats in line at the centre of the chassis and frame, the Viking builds out from the concept of safety, utility and comfort for the crew on board. overall performance capabilities made its ‘F’ designated variant a favourite on the track. At the same time, Kawasaki developed an ‘R’ model, an endurospec alternative which blends the hard-core moto elements of the KLX450F with a little practicality. For 2015 they have re-imagined this popular enduro bike, releasing the new KLX450R early - in fact, it’s here already!

My love of cars and enjoyment of driving stems from the exquisite sense of freedom achieved as a result of purchasing my own vehicle as a teenager.

Summers of picking up hay provided sufficient money for the restrictions of push bikes and unreliable bus services to be released. At that time a new car entering the neighbourhood was a special event, but it was the smell that indelibly etched itself into the memory. New cars of 50 years ago had a unique pungency of fresh polish, new rubber, and hot oil — quite unlike any today.

As a result I’ve never wanted to accept that oil is a finite resource and my support of offshore drilling is purely emotive and selfish. Logic provides a different perspective but emotion always wins.

Emotion is at the base of every action, logic is simply the tool used to justify the decision, and so it is with the use of fertiliser nitrogen. The best long-term data shows that annual pasture production was significantly higher in the years prior to the widespread regular applications of nitrogen, particularly urea.

However there is now a second generation of farmers who believes their ability to grow sufficient pasture relies on its regular application.

Recently a farmer becoming increasingly concerned at where the discussion on its use was heading tried to end the

session by saying that he didn’t care what the question was the answer was ‘more nitrogen’. But what if the answer to generating more pasture is ‘less nitrogen’ or ultimately ‘no nitrogen’?

The measures from properties using CalciZest/DoloZest based total nutrient programmes over the last 10 years clearly show more pasture is grown than on properties using comparative conventional fertiliser nitrogen driven programmes.

The cost is less and the increase has always been immediate. The growth is equally dependent on nitrogen but it’s now fixed direct from the atmosphere mostly via clovers and stored in humus ready for use as required.

Because feed quality is higher, fewer kilograms of dry matter are required to produce a kilogram of milk solids.

Fewer animals are required to achieve targeted production reducing the pressure on people, cow sheds, races, and water systems.

Animal health costs are markedly lower and there are numerous properties now where empty rates are 10% or lower, and intervention with penicillin is seldom required.

family times become more relaxed. Clients spoken with recently cited the knowledge that they already had the ability to farm under the pending nitrogen regulations as a genuine positive.

These overseer-based regulations are designed to reduce animal numbers as cow urine is considered to be the greatest contributor to excess Nitrate-N leaking below the root zone of plants and less cows means less urine.

The model will doubtless be refined over time as data that shows the concentration of urea in urine can be markedly influenced by the diet of the animal. In the short term reducing animal numbers will help balance the equation.

There’s profit to be made from producing a genuine 1000kgMS/ ha from pasture alone. An increasing number of ESI clients are achieving this and with per cow production around 500kgMS a high level of per hectare production is achievable within the regulations.
