The programme helps encourage and support local community groups, schools, early childcare centres and iwi/hapu, with not-for-profit projects designed to enhance the region’s natural environment.

Horizons chairman, Bruce Gordon, said applications will be assessed on environmental benefits, feasibility, community involvement and longterm benefits.

“In the past, we have granted funding to a range of projects such as sand dune restoration, native tree planting, wetland preservation and trapping to protect endangered species,” said Mr Gordon.

“More often than not we help groups that simply need a little funding to get their projects underway.

“It’s really satisfying to provide this support, and we also supply expert advice, where possible.”

Mr Gordon said applications that provide opportunities for the public to learn more about the environment, and encourage greater use of the region’s facilities, and amenities will

be considered favourably. “We receive frequent proposals for beautification planting, vegetable gardens and edible forests. While these are great ideas, they don’t focus on engagement with the natural environmental aspect of the programme, so we ask that applicants have a decent read of the grant guidelines.”

Last year Horizons funded 12 projects, which ranged from a variety of activities across the region and received between $200–$3,050 each.

“We gave out several grants to early childhood centres and schools to improve their natural areas in a bid to enable students and children to better engage and learn about our environment.

“We also gave grants for projects, which aim to see our remaining wetlands being cared for and enhanced by their communities.”

Regional dairy winners Finalists from 11 regions have been preparing for the final round of judging in the lead-up to the 2018 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards.

The 33 finalists will compete for prizes worth more than $200,000 and the honour of winning either the 2018 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year, 2018 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year or the 2018 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the year title.

Awards general manager, Chris Keeping, said the 33 finalists are the cream of the crop from the 374 entries received, and it was a hard-fought battle.

“It is very clear that the New Zealand dairy industry is in good health with passionate farmers, managers and trainees with positive attitudes leading the way.

“The judges were impressed at the high calibre of entrants in all regions.

All the entrants possess the confidence and knowledge required in the next level of judging.”

The 11 finalists in the New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year competition consist of six sharemilkers and five contract milkers. Among those finalists are Manawatu Dairy Share Farmers of the Year, Richard and Wendy Ridd, who are in their third season 50–50 sharemilking on a 209ha property near Ashhurst. The couple are milking 410 cows on a farm belonging to Richard’s parents, Andrew and Caroline.

The Manawatu Dairy Manager of the Year, Angela Strawbridge, is herd manager for Stewart Dairylands, milking 420 cows on James and Debbie Stewart’s 180ha farm near Bunnythorpe.

Angela is one of 11 finalists vying for the New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year title.

Cheryl Eldridge is passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool so with her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough sheep station.

O

riginally Cheryl started out with an idea to keep the sheep that originated in Denmark from extinction, whilst keeping the family farm operating profitably. That idea grew into a family business that begins out in the paddock and ends in highend fashion stores and on blockbuster cinema screens.

“We are proud of things that are 100 per cent from New Zealand and have been doing it for 30 years now,” says Cheryl.

The farm is medium to steep hill country with lots of retired bush on the east coast — six kilometres from the ocean.

“Barry is now semi-retired and our son helps me manage the farm, along with a stockman. Everything in our business starts with the stock — through to the shearers, wool classing and the artisans that create the textiles and the end products.

“It is a lovely New Zealand story and other farmers need to know there are great wools out there that we need to use. Our products are chemical free, and I have recently expanded into eco-fashi on and we are looking at ecotourism.”

Cheryl’s designs are exported across the world and even the royal, Princess Charlotte in the United Kingdom, is a fan.

“With our amazing team we create bespoke designs — it is what we do well — we often produce limited collections specifically for clients, as mass producers can’t do this.

“Many New Zealanders have some wonderful little stories, but like us, are flat tack all the time and don’t get to tell them. Our family are also protective of our creations and our copyright as well — you have to be.”

Stansborough has a team of 10 staff at the mill based in Wellington, plus others on the farm when necessary, and the shearing gangs.

“It’s a dedicated team effort — on the station we run low stock numbers and also are involved in honey production, subtropicals and are considering ecotourism for diversification.

“I discovered the small flock of rare grey sheep in Nelson, which had been brought to New Zealand from Sweden 20 years prior. The elegant, fine-boned breed were traditionally farmed for their pelts and not particularly sought after in the pragmatic south for their wool.

“The flock of sheep are now called ‘Stansborough Grey’ and in early 1990 they were dumped due to the share market crash, and when I found them I brought a core of 400 sheep plus all the embryos and semen that were with them.

“I found embryologist Trevor Cook from Feilding, who had worked with them when first brought out to New Zealand.

He has been with us all the way through, as we have strengthened the breed.

“We have a ‘closed’ flock and our embryos and semen ‘Stansborough

Grey’ is registered with the New Zealand Sheep Breeders Association. We don’t sell our genetics and don’t buy any in, as our breed is specific to the wool type we need.”

Other coloured wool doesn’t have the same criteria, but Cheryl says that does not mean they are inferior in any way.

“Ours are bred as a wool sheep for our particular textile production — we are a little different as not many people do it right through like us.”

The sheep historically originate from an island off the coast of Sweden — their unique grey fleeces were perhaps adapted to keep out the keen north wind, which scours this cold land. The wool was utilised by the Vikings for making the sails for their medieval longships.

“Barry and I developed, and strengthened the traits that led to the finer, soft and lustrous ‘Stansborough Grey’ fleeces we have today,” says Cheryl.

“Our aim was to develop a fibre suitable for spinning into worsted fabric.

The line of sheep has been kept pure and it took 12 years to create what is now a flock of 1,300 animals — now a unique registered breed in their own right, and the only flock of its kind in the world.

“We also farm a herd of 80 alpacas, have forestry plantations and have created native bush reserves, to cancel out our carbon footprint and we produce high-quality UMF honey on the property.”

ENABLING HEALTHY SHEARING SHEDS

BY ANN MORGAN Mark and Megan Turton decided there has to be a better way to clean the effluent buildup from under woolsheds to help farmers have a healthier environment, so the couple set about inventing a solution.

B

ased in Dannevirke, Megan was a teacher aide at a local primary school and Mark is a fencing contractor and the ‘cleansweep’ now keeps the couple busy travelling to various destinations with their ‘cleansweep’ machine making woolsheds an environmentally friendlier place to work.

“I spent time as a dairy farmer and then got into fencing some 30 years ago,” says Mark.

“We have six guys employed at Turton Fencing Ltd creating all types of fences, but mostly farm and security, as well as pole sheds. We are always looking for an opportunity to excel ourselves and that is how we came up with the shearing shed clearing machine.

“I gave a guy a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed and he had a big vacuum cleaner. The day was terrible and wet, and the machine didn’t work well at all

— we spent all our time unblocking it as it kept clogging.“ Mark thought there must be something easier to use for the job, but there wasn’t.

“I asked myself a few questions and came up with a sideways bulldozer system with a hydraulic motor. Every time we trialled it, we saw ten things wrong but one thing that worked, so we kept pushing ahead. It has taken a lot of time and investment to get to where we are today, but it is definitely worth the effort.”

Mark says the machine is versatile and can work on wet ground; whereas a sucking machine gets blocked.

“Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons — all the manure is there, and using the ‘cleansweep’ you don’t have to be amongst it. The machine self-steers and operating from the outside can reach to 20-30 metres. We assess every job prior for quoting and our service is a fast and cost-effective way of getting your shed cleaned.

“Farmers get the sheep in overnight so they aren’t wet for the shearer, who wants to rock up and get the job done — no shearer wants to shear wet animals.

The sheep also sweat whilst in the shed, so keeping the base clean keeps air circulating through the building.

“Overnight the animals empty out and the waste drops through the grating and underneath the building gets built-up.

Before long years have passed and then it is too much of an issue for the farmer and it gets put in the ‘too hard’ basket — suddenly manure is coming up through the grating and creates issues

The product removed from under the shed is often used as fertiliser on paddocks or donated to schools and clubs for fundraisers such as the ammonia smell, lack of air circulation and the wool gets stains.

“We are making the job simple for farmers and they don’t have to handle it themselves, and the end product is great fertiliser that the client keeps.

Some people give it to the local school or clubs to sell, or it is spread on paddocks.” Mark says it is important having a clean shed, as this creates a healthy space on many levels.

removes a lot more stress than people realise, the end result is no ammonia smell, no wool staining and we can do a maintenance plan for future years.

“We also clean the count out pens — when the sheep is shorn it goes down a chute to the pens. They generally take a bit of wool with them each time — this sits at the bottom and packs together like concrete. The machine digs into that and grinds it off as well.

“It is good to get rid of that buildup, because before you know it is 3-4 foot thick and the animals have trouble getting out.

“We are now looking at building a second machine and going to the Gisborne area, as we are sure they could use our services. We believe clean sheds means less stress and happy shearers and animals, clean wool, and of course, happy farmers.”

LINKING FARMING AND

by Denise Gunn Growing up on a 260-cow dairy farm, under the eastern fringe of the Ruahine Ranges, gave Dylan Brunton a love for living and working on the land as well as spending time in the bush.

D

ylan’s strong interest in native flora and fauna led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science majoring in ecology and zoology at Massey University. Following his studies, Dylan took up a dairy farming position in Taranaki.

“My first position was actually as a tractor operator on a 600cow high-input and high-cropping dairy farm in Okaiawa,” he said.

“It fitted well with my interests at the time, being quite keen on machinery and wanting to experience farming a high-input system. The next season I progressed to 2IC on the same farm, which saw me being more hands-on with the stock and farm management.”

Dylan has found the link between dairy farming and the environment provides plenty of opportunities to apply knowledge and skills, gained

through his degree, to dairy farming.

“Especially around impacts on water ecology, soil properties and agricultural emissions,” he said.

“In the future, I would like to pursue this more to help benefit both farming and the environment.”

Dylan is currently in his first season as a herd manager on a 500-cow dairy farm in Cardiff near Stratford. The unit is a pasture-based summer-safe farm nestled under Mount Taranaki.

Through experiencing these two very opposite farming systems, Dylan hopes to be able to take best practice from these to use when managing his own farm. The 171ha effective Cardiff farm milks 500 cross-breed cows through a 36-a-side herringbone shed. A 30ha runoff is used for wintering 110 cows.

“This is my first season farming in Cardiff under Dean Smith,” said Dylan.

“We have a strong focus on producing high-quality pasture through strict grazing management to achieve high production per cow.

“Farming under the mountain, we expect a lot of rain during the winter and early spring, so management around this time is crucial to minimising pasture damage heading into spring.”

Although unpredictable weather over the past few seasons has been testing

for farmers in the region, Dylan believes his toughest challenges are yet to come, as he progresses into management and sharemilking positions. “So far, my farming journey has been about taking in as much information and getting skilled up for the future,” he said.

“Spending four years at university means I have a few years of practical farming experience to catch up on.” As a newcomer to Taranaki three years ago,

Dylan originally joined Central Taranaki Young Farmers to meet new people.

“Now some of my best friends are people I have met through Young Farmers. Aside from friends, Young Farmers is a great way to gain recognition, get familiar with local people and businesses, and to get your name out there.”

He is now vice chair for the club.

“I hold this position for our club alongside Murray Perks, as well as the vice chair position for the Taranaki Regional Young Farmers committee.”

Dylan also has a new role as the TeenAg liaison alongside Phil Read.

“We work with the Stratford High Young Farmers club to promote agriculture and grow TeenAg members within schools.”

He is the Central Taranaki Young Farmers events coordinator too.

“This basically means I send a lot of texts out to club members, trying to convince them to help stack hay and cover silage stacks.”

Last year, Central Taranaki Young Farmers won best club in New Zealand.

“It has been awesome seeing the club grow in the last three years, from about six members to almost 50,” he said.

Dylan has entered the FMG Young Farmer of the Year district competition for the past two years, making it to the regional finals this year.

He said it was an awesome experience and a great way to benchmark his skills, and to challenge himself to improve on those.

The 25-year-old has found working with people is one of the drawcards to

working in the dairy industry.

“There are so many keen and like-minded people and organisations that keep the rural industry thriving,” he said.

“Getting involved with Young Farmers has really shown me the support, enthusiasm and dedication behind the industry.

“With the drought around the coast earlier this season, it was awesome to see all the donations and support to help farmers in need.”

Dylan would like to be sharemilking or working towards herd ownership, within the next five years.

“Being part of the food industry, we can expect regulations to strengthen around food quality and animal welfare.

“So for me, keeping aware and remaining on top of the game is important to keep your operation viable,” he said.

Long-term, Dylan wants to run an efficient and productive business that produces high-quality product that is easy to market globally.

“I think it is important to find a style of farming that you enjoy and to always look at changing or bettering something.

“This will keep you interested and motivated from season to season, because at the end of the day, your farm is your home.”

WINTER FOCUS Repairs and maintenance

Winter days are short, they can be wet and cold and you might rather be inside rather than out, so the more maintenance that can be done now, the easier life will seem later.

The cooler autumn temperatures provide the opportunity to catch up on that list of ‘round-to-it’ jobs that have been left because it was too hot to do them, or you were too busy, or just didn’t feel like it!

In areas of heavy rainfall over winter, get out the mower or weed-eater along ditches and drains to ensure free-flowing

water, so no damming up or flooding occurs later. Clearing culverts of any broken branches or other accumulated deadfall while the creeks are low, is a lot easier than trying to do so, when they are full of water!

Autumn planting along waterways or hillsides prone to erosion, is another productive way to spend some time

Maintenance is easier done on fine days now rather than when conditions deteriorate

now. Forward planning in this area, is a worthwhile exercise to decide which plants and trees will be best suited for your purpose.

Various programmes and grants are available from some regional councils for landowners choosing to and needing to be environmentally aware.

Household firewood will be required if your home has a fireplace, and this is a good way to clear broken branches or fallen trees, or even trees that may not withstand the rigours of winter storms. Keeping trees and treelines tidy should prevent them potentially falling on top of fences or power lines later, and if you don’t need the firewood yourself, someone will.

A little maintenance in the yard may

also be necessary to save angst on a cold rainy day. Ensuring all your feeding out equipment is in good repair, a quick service and oil changes done, even fixing that gate that doesn’t swing properly will save your dog from an entertaining run of expletives, as you stumble and slide in the mud later!

If you use temporary electric fencing during winter check you have enough reels, plenty of standards, and that any battery-run units are charged.

The maintenance list isn’t too long, doesn’t take too much effort, especially if you’re lucky enough to have family members to help out with some chores like firewood for example, and how satisfying it will be to run through a smooth winter!

When we think of winter, we immediately think of negative descriptive words like cold, rain, wet, snow and mud, then consider comforting words like warm, dry, and cosy.

Wearing appropriate clothing for the conditions is the one thing that will make us feel comfortable, no matter what chores we are doing. To be warm and dry makes even the toughest jobs seem bearable, and there are many options available to consider.

Your preference of outerwear is as much a personal choice as what you might wear underneath, and there are several schools of thought on what is best, whether traditional wool or more modern fabrics.

Many prefer the warmth and breathability of a wool coat, though these can be heavy to wear when very wet, they hold the water taking a long time to dry, and will retain odour. Oilskin is another traditionally worn fabric, which turns the water well, but in heavy rain it does absorb and becomes very heavy to wear. It is very good against wind however, and definitely a good choice if you like the ‘Man from Snowy River’ look!

Synthetic fleece comes in varying weights and densities, is very comfortable to wear as it stretches as you move, it will turn a certain amount of rain, but often the wind whips right through like you’re only wearing a T-shirt!

S

arah has loved horses her entire life. At the age of 10, she received her first horse as a Christmas gift. Her grandfather, a former top jumps jockey, gave her a lot of support and encouragement.

“My grandad sent me to help out at a stable for Stuart Manning, who was a good friend of his,” she said.

“So I learnt to ride track work on the beach, groomed horses at the races, and all the rest of the hard work that went with it.”

Work for Central Districts racehorse trainer, Kevin Gray, and at Lisa Latta’s racing stables in Christchurch followed.

When Sarah moved back to the Waikato, she took on employment at a breaking-in and pretraining establishment in Matamata. She also worked on a stud farm, preparing yearlings for the sales.

Sarah continues preparing yearlings for sales, as well as running her own small stud farm, Willow Creek Farm.

The stud farm was established two years ago in Morrinsville, but recently relocated to the Bay of Plenty.

Joy’s long and varied involvement with horses dates back to 1960. Not only did this include pleasure riding, showing horses and racing, but Joy also founded and established the national registered horse welfare charity, Horsewatch NZ (HWNZ).

When Joy’s health deteriorated, due to a previous blood disease progressing to a rare form of blood cancer, she was forced to close HWNZ. “I still had the desire to continue contributing in a constructive way to a good cause,” she said.

“Due to Joy’s own personal circumstances, she wanted to find someone who would be willing to take Nonna on when her condition worsened,” said Sarah.

“I then came up with an idea to donate any proceeds from the sale of the resulting foal to charity.

“So the hunt began to find something small and personal that could benefit from a donation.”

The pair also wanted to be able to follow the charity closely and help young children immediately, rather than trying to help fund research.

When Sarah came across child cancer charity, Gabby’s Starlit Hope, she sent through the Facebook link to Joy.

“Joy immediately knew that this was the charity we wanted to help and see smiles light up on the faces of kids, who are in situations that make life harder than it should be.”

Joy said with her own personal link with cancer, Gabby’s Starlit Hope seemed the perfect choice.

Starlit Hope was created by the late Gabby Devine in February 2013.

A diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) in February 2012, meant Gabby had a year of intensive chemotherapy, radiation and major surgery to remove the remaining tumour. During this time, she spent many months at Starship and Taranaki Base Hospitals.

When Gabby completed her cancer treatment, she wanted to help oncology children in their cancer journey.

She established Starlit Hope with the aim of doing random acts of kindness for oncology children, parents and occasionally oncology staff.

A major part of this was providing oncology children in hospital with boredom boxes containing seven presents — one for the child to open each day for a week. Gabby passed away in 2015 at the age of 13.

Joy’s mare, a six-year-old Thoroughbred, was initially being trained and prepared for life as a show hack.

Unfortunately due to a serious accident, Nonna is no longer able to be ridden.

“She has also had her share of setbacks, but is now 100% and ready to embark on her new endeavours,” said Joy. The decision to join with Sarah Thompson of Willow Creek Farm,

Joy said Nonna will now help contribute to the young cancer-affected children of New Zealand, as they undergo invasive treatment in hospital.

The rising four-year-old palomino paint Quarter Horse/Stationbred cross stallion, He’s All In A Twist, stands at 15hh and was bred for his quality and trainable temperament.

“Due to these passed-down traits from his sire and dam, coupled with his wonderful personality, I decided to stand him for stud duties,” said Sarah.

“So far this is paying off, with his progeny possessing the exact same traits.”

Sarah and Joy aim for a special annual breeding between these two horses with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each foal donated to Gabby’s Starlit Hope. The pair are yet to decide whether this will be via tender or a set price.

“Nonna Quattro has had two previous beautiful foals and we expect the pairing with He’s All In A Twist will produce equally as stunning foals,” said Sarah.

“We hope the public will follow both the resulting progeny and the charity as it is such a deserving cause.”

The best pastures to create the best production may vary from region to region and there is no argument that regional experience translates into feed, that provides quality and quantity for feeding livestock.

New Zealand meat customers today expect a high standard and are usually, of course, buying to end-customer requirements of carcase weights, quality and also shipment timing.

Per animal performance targets have become more important and thus pasture quality has become a critical factor, when it comes to producing quality animals for the all-important export market. So the answer literally ‘lies in the soil’ and the feed it produces, so the farmer can look forward to top animal growth rates.

Findings from New Zealand and international research have been refined

by Beef and Lamb New Zealand, who also offer in-depth pasture advice on their website. Here, farmers can find a simple method of assessing pasture quality in the field for every day use onfarm, and in instructing contractors on their vision. Visual assessments of dead matter, legume content, grass leaf and

Invest in pasture Investing in pasture renewal will improve the production and performance of your land and livestock.

When it comes to sowing new pasture there are a number of key steps to consider including: sowing date, seedbed quality, sowing depth and seed ground coverage.

The sowing date affects pasture establishment, yield and persistence.

Later sowing in cooler autumn conditions means slower establishment due to the cooler temperatures, and greater potential to pug and damage new pastures in winter and spring.

Sowing early in the dry autumns, after February 25, in dry conditions with treated seed is easier for contractors, means faster establishment and more yield, and sets up better pasture persistence.

When establishing a new pasture the process doesn’t stop at sowing the seed and DairyNZ advise that good management gets the best results out of a new pasture and will help it persist.

A pasture should not be considered successfully established until there is a dense, well tillered pasture that has survived a summer. Management through this time has a major impact on its future performance.

Before a new pasture is ready for its first grazing, it needs to pass the ‘pluck

test’ to see if plants are firmly rooted, so animals won’t pull them out of the ground. How to do this can be found on the DairyNZ website.

The first grazing is about removing the tips of plants to encourage their growth, not about feeding animals. Pastures growth is slow until they are nipped off, This accelerates both the growth rate and tillering.

It is best to ensure the first graze is in dry conditions to avoid soil and plant damage. Let stock graze the top 3-4 cm off the plants — do not bare the pasture out. If possible graze with lighter young stock — cows can be used, but take care as they may only need an hour or two in the paddock.

In good conditions, the first grazing can be 6-8 weeks after sowing a perennial ryegrass (typically 1-2 weeks sooner for an annual, Italian or hybrid) but dry or cold conditions can prolong this.

Apply fertiliser as required — new pasture responds well to nitrogen, and over the first six months, generally two small applications are used for example 25-30 kg N/ha, when conditions allow — not water logged and soil temperature greater than 7°C.

It is important to monitor new pastures closely for emerging weeds.

DUCK SHOOTING Stay safe while hunting Fish & Game NZ regulates game bird hunting throughout New Zealand and each region has its own set of regulations working in conjunction with the national regulations to ensure the sustainability of game bird hunting and fishing.

These and other information are available on Fish & Game NZ website.

A Game Notice sets out the conditions under which a licence holder may hunt for game birds in their region. These are published in booklets and should be obtained when buying a hunting licence.

It is important observe the code of conduct. If no Fish & Game access sign is present, ask permission from the land occupier before crossing private property and check dogs are permitted.

Do not interfere with livestock, crops, machinery or other property and keep your dog under firm control or on a lead when on private property.

Always use gates, stiles or other recognised access points and avoid damage to fences. Leave everything as you found it. — if a gate is open or closed leave it that way.

Keep to marked tracks or park and walk to your hunting spot. Do not park vehicles so that they obstruct gateways, or cause a hazard on the road or access way and respect the environment,

wildlife, other hunters and members of the public.

Practise the seven police-approved principles of firearm safety: Treat every firearm as loaded, always point firearms in a safe direction, load a firearm only when ready to fire, identify your target beyond all doubt, check your firing zone, store firearms and ammunition safely and avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms.

Carry a current game bird hunting licence and comply with the relevant bag limits and conditions of hunting.

Wear a high-visibility hat and a high-visibility outer garment whenever possible and ensure competency as a shooter, estimate ranges, and be aware of your, and your shotgun’s limitations, and select appropriate shot size for the quarry being hunted.

Distinguish what may be lawfully hunted from protected species and if an animal is wounded, take all reasonable steps to locate it, so that it can be killed quickly and humanely.

Use a trained gundog, or other means to ensure the prompt retrieval of game, be it your own or to assist another hunter.

All hunters will be judged by your actions. Remove litter from the hunting area and ensure that your conduct is above reproach. Encourage the same attitude in your shooting companions.

Brexit representative in London Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association have appointed Jeff Grant to support the red meat sector’s response to Brexit.

Mr Grant will be based in London, and will work closely with B+LNZ’s Europe representative, the New Zealand Government and commercial interests to help strengthen the red meat sector’s ties with the United Kingdom and safeguard New Zealand’s exports to the key market.

“Jeff is highly experienced and has been involved in the red meat sector for more than 25 years, so brings with him expertise and strategic skills that will be crucial over the next two years in dealing with the implications of Brexit,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand chairman, Andrew Morrison.

“As a sheep, beef and deer farmer himself with properties at Balfour and Otama Valley in Southland, Jeff understands the importance of trade to the sector.”

B+LNZ and MIA, with financial support from AGMARDT, will jointly fund the additional resource.

Meat Industry Association chairman, John Loughlin, says Brexit is one of the biggest challenges to face the sector in recent years and it is crucial New Zealand is no worse off as a result of the change.

“Jeff will play a crucial role in the overall NZ Inc effort to build and maintain our relationships in the UK,

secure our national interests and dispel the misconceptions about our sector and exports.”

Mr Grant has had a number of different roles over the years, including being elected as a Member of Parliament in 1987, where he served two terms, including the role of Senior Whip, in the National Government from 1990 until 1993, when he retired.

Since 1994, he has been predominantly involved as a director or trustee of organisations and companies including Landcorp, Wrightson, and Beef + Lamb New Zealand.

He has also been chairman of ten organisations including Meat and Wool NZ, the New Zealand Meat Board, the Meat Research and Development Council, AGMARDT, Invest South and Wool Partners Co-op.

Most recently he has been chairman of AgResearch, Mount Linton Station, OSPRI, Milford Sound Tourism, Southland Shared Services and a Director of SBS Bank, Finance Now Ltd, NZ Young Farmers, and Predator Free 2050 Ltd. He will be active in the role from around mid-year and will work closely with Beef + Lamb New Zealand regional manager, Ben O’Brien, who is based in Brussels.

The review will also be important for other milk companies, including Westland Milk Products, which recently partnered with Southern Pastures to take four million kilograms of milk solids a year. The partnership is one example of how the sector is adapting over time to meet the issues facing it.

“New Zealand’s ability to sustainably produce high-quality, nutritious food for a growing global population is crucial to our economic future. Reaching higher up the value chain we can continue to deliver what international consumers demand and in a way that is sustainable and leverages our competitive edge as quality food producers.

“The dairy sector workforce must share in these returns. As one smart farmer recently put it: ‘First we look after

He said he used to think he couldn’t find anyone, but when he started listening to people and giving them what they wanted he found people.

“Talking to farming families around the country over the past few months, I have been impressed by their ideas for the future and their keenness to improve farming operations.

“The dairy industry has faced tough challenges recently, including the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak and both cyclones and drought.

“I want to thank you for your perseverance, and for working together with the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Rural Support Trusts and others on the ground.”

Effluent management specialists Investing in a concrete Prosump effluent storage facility is about ‘doing it once and doing it right’ say its manufacturers, Presco Environmental Infrastructure.

Presco’s Prosumps are manufactured using 150mm thick, 40MPA, triplereinforced concrete for extra strength and to withstand the corrosion of the effluent.

The ponds can be installed completely in-ground, completely above-ground or anywhere in-between, depending on the lay of the land and site conditions.

“Prosumps have the lowest ‘throughlife’ cost of any effluent storage option currently on the market” says Oliver, “and they come with a 50-year minimum build-life guarantee”.

The ponds are not only built for longterm durability, however, they also provide many short-term cost savings and benefits including ease of use. The floor of the Prosump is dished, which along

with the up to 3.6m high vertical walls, hugely decreases the rain catchment area and footprint on the land, and also contributes to less solids build-up making stirring more efficient.

Understanding osteoarthritis

My recent seminars included detailed discussion on osteoarthritis (OA) and the many things we can do to help. My introductory point was: that it is important to see osteoarthritis as a true disease process, rather than just wear and tear.

An excellent research paper (Yudoh et.al, Arthritis Research Therapy 2005) took a detailed look at the processes that cause OA. In particular, they studied the chondrocyte cells that maintain and repair cartilage.

What they found was that chondrocytes are very susceptible to damage by free radicals.

While free radical production is a completely normal part of our energy metabolism if these are unchecked by antioxidants, cells can become damaged and eventually die.

The researchers found that over time, free radicals damage chondrocytes to the point that they die. Once this happens, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will break down. Eventually this leads to loss of cartilage and subsequent narrowing of the spaces between bones.

More recent research confirmed that accidental damage to joints, triggers the same destructive process.

Physical injury to joints increases free radical activity, which damages

chondrocytes leading to cartilage loss. Mature chondrocytes have limited ability to reproduce.

This is why death of chondrocytes is central to cartilage loss in arthritis.

Any successful treatment must address the real cause, which is adding the antioxidants that can neutralise the free radicals that damage joints.

One of my clients had diagnosed OA in his spine, but unfortunately could no longer tolerate antiinflammatory medication. I firstly put him on my multimineral/multiantioxidant and double doses of my high chondroitin joint formula.

Within three months the back pain had largely gone and was much more comfortable.

Those who know a bit about motoring history, will know that Lotus boss Colin Chapman famously said that the recipe for a better car, was to simplify and add lightness.

Now from the exotic to the more prosaic — what happens when this philosophy is applied to one of the most popular small runabouts in the world?

The Suzuki Swift is now in its fourth modern generation, and that means a sporty alternative is also on the tarmac.

So how have the research and development team from the company, most famous for their face-meltingly fast superbikes, made this lively little machine out-supermini the actual Mini?

By taking a leaf from Mr Chapman’s book in the chassis department.

The Swift Sport is based on the same HEARTECT platform as the tiny Ignis crossover, and while much of its bodywork seems larger — that aggressive grille, chin spoiler, flared arches and more — this is more to do with stance than added mass.

The all-important torque to weight ratio, which dictates how much power there is under the hood to offset the weight of the vehicle, has been pared down to a healthy 4.2 kilos to one Newton Metre.

When it comes to producing that power, Suzuki have taken a design cue from way back in the 1970s. When car makers then wanted to make a sporty

model of their usual family car, they weren’t shy about simply shoehorning in the biggest V8 they could find in the parts bin. Style plus substance

Everybody is in the SUV business these days — from Bentley’s massive, country house proportioned Bentaygo, with its emphasis on luxury, to Lamborghini’s Urus, which promises velocity. The dizzying array of choices has spawned another subspecies, which is definitely worth a look — the stylish, yet still determinedly practical upmarket off-roader.

These are examples by companies, who approach the sports utility concept from its roots. In fact, both of the top examples in this field come from marques, which began in the mud and thunder of warfare — Jeep and Range Rover. Tracing their history back to fighting 4x4s, both the new Jeep Compass and the Range Rover Velar have come a long way, switching their fatigues for a stylishly cut suit in the case of the English offering, and the calculated designer ruggedness of a modern outdoorsman for the Jeep.

The Jeep takes the lead, in terms of blue-collar pricing and built-in ruggedness, with the Trailhawk variant boasting all the hallmarks of a brand forged on trails like the challenging Rubicon. Its 2.4 litre Tigershark series petrol engine delivers 229 Nm of torque to the ground via the tried and tested Jeep Active Drive Low system — and no less than nine gears in a smooth

automatic transmission. This is no school run faux-wheel-drive — underbody skid plates, red competition style tow hooks, hill descent control and even a rock crawling mode, make this the kind of machine that doesn’t understand the concept of getting stuck. At the same time, the cabin is a leather-wrapped cocoon of calm, and while the Grand Cherokee heads up the range for luxury, this middle-sized contender provides plenty of space, plenty of comfort and real off-road chops.

Of course, the Range Rover Velar is also the middle child of the family, weighing in below the formidable Sport and above the Evoque. It’s a study in style, looking jaw-dropping from every angle, but there’s been no compromise on power — a V6 under the hood delivers better fuel economy and lower emissions too. While the cabin is appointed with luxurious leather and suede, unobtrusive infotainment and climate-controlled hush, outside this machine can tackle more than just the gravel driveway of a stately home. Trust helping homeless cats

Manawatu Alley Cat Trust (MACT), formerly known as Alley Cat Brigade, has been busy for more than three years quietly desexing stray and homeless cats, as well as rehabilitating and rehoming their feral-born kittens.

The small rescue organisation is often called out to help people with non-desexed domestic and stray cats, dumped by uncaring and uneducated people.

These cats are left to fend for themselves and continue breeding, adding to the vicious cycle that is overpopulating and burgeoning in rural areas.

MACT is trying to turn this problem around with action and education.

Volunteer, Jenny Doyle, said completely tame cats are able to be rehomed, usually to urban families.

“But many cats we deal with are semitame to totally unsocialised, having been born on the streets.”

“These are difficult to find homes for,” she said.

“So we are putting out a plea to kind and caring farmers and lifestylers, who could help us by adopting the semi-

tame cats we encounter. “These cats can earn their keep as rodent hunters and rabbiters for their barns, in return for some regular feeding and looking out for.

“The cats are always desexed and health checked.”

Jenny said these healthy and desexed cats, will fend off non-desexed feral cats from their territory.

“There are also friendlier cats available for adoption like Tin Tin, who will offer a rural family the best of both worlds — lots of cuddles, plus dead mice and wild rabbits.”

If adopted homes can’t be found, as a last resort the cats are desexed and returned to an often hazardous territory. MACT continue to care and manage them on an ongoing basis.

“After all, these cats have been failed by humans, it is no fault of theirs that

they have landed in this predicament.” said Jenny. Further information is
