p Teams from Dargaville Volunteer Fire Service, Kaipara District Council, Cool Bananas, North Power/Trust Energy and Silver Fern Farms carried children on stretchers to enable those with health issues to participate in the Cross Country For Charity event which took place at Selwyn Park School last week, raising funds for the Northland Emergency Services Trust and raising awareness of rheumatic fever. The day raised $937.10 with a total of $1,908.50 so far including donations through the the ‘givealittle cross country for charity’ fundraiser page.

The Dargaville community has farewelled long-serving Dr Maurice Matich, the man who oversaw the birth of more than 5,000 people in a career that began 65 years ago.

Dr Matich was born in Te Kopuru, one of eight children of Croatian descent. He was married to Maureen for 66 years and they had seven children. Dr Matich’s parents ensured their children gained a good education and Maurice was the first New Zealand-born Croatian to study medicine, starting his

studies during World War II at Auckland University and finishing at Otago where he qualified in 1946. He became one of three doctors serving the Kaipara and started his Dargaville practice on November 27, 1950. He often travelled great distances to a patient’s home and he personally
