The Dargaville community has farewelled long-serving Dr Maurice Matich, the man who oversaw the birth of more than 5,000 people in a career that began 65 years ago.

Dr Matich was born in Te Kopuru, one of eight children of Croatian descent. He was married to Maureen for 66 years and they had seven children.

Dr Matich’s parents ensured their children gained a good education and Maurice was the first New Zealand-born Croatian to study medicine, starting his

studies during World War II at Auckland University and finishing at Otago where he qualified in 1946.

He became one of three doctors serving the Kaipara and started his Dargaville practice on November 27, 1950. He often travelled great distances to a patient’s home and he personally

The Northland Emergency Services Trust is the first rescue helicopter operation in New Zealand to get approval to undertake maintenance on its own aircraft.

‘He figured if they said yes they would have a good work ethic. He wasn’t interested in anything else and we always heard him before we saw him as he had a very distinctive voice’.

Dr Matich once said ‘The biggest mistake I made was to retire too early,’ — when he was aged 78.

He retired in the year 2000 after serving the community for five decades and he then wrote his memoirs ‘From Beacon Point — My Journey, My Story’ to share the family history.

‘I have always believed a family doctor should be involved in the total health care of a family, not just the individual, and that should extend out into the community,’ he noted in his book. ‘I have always believed in a team concept in delivering healthcare’.

As much as Dr Matich served the community, the commitment wasn’t just one of a doctor and friend, it was one of

a family. He could not have helped so many without his own family giving up their time with him.

No doubt at times this was not easy, but because of this commitment he was able to help more than most would ever know, and for that, we thank Mrs Matich and their children, for without their support Dr Matich could not have been so readily available in times of need.

As stated in his autobiography: ‘It is hard to believe when I look back, that I should grow up from a little urchin to be the family doctor of so many of the people who looked after me when I was small.

‘Meeting my wife Maureen changed my life. Maureen acted as my nurse in the early days and gave me the moral and psychological support one needed.

‘I accept I will live on through my children and my grandchildren,’ — Maurice Matich. ¢

NEST will carry out the specialist work needed on its fleet of three Sikorsky S-76 helicopters following its authorisation as a Part 145 certified operation from the Civil Aviation Authority. The new maintenance operation which starts this month, has created three new jobs in Northland.

The Whangarei-based service has been working towards the certification for a year, during which time it has refined its infrastructure and increased its capabilities to meet CAA requirements. It means the trust will be able to make valuable financial savings and give it greater flexibility when scheduling maintenance for its aircraft.

“As a trust, it has financial responsibilities to make savings where it can and the regular aircraft maintenance required is a huge but necessary expense,” said NEST Chief Executive Pete Turnbull.

“This means substantial savings can be made by reducing flights down to Ardmore in Auckland for maintenance and being able to purchase components and parts direct from suppliers.

“There are also major operational benefits of doing the maintenance in-house as it means less downtime for the helicopters, allowing them to get back into the air quicker which results in an even more reliable and top quality service.

“We’re always looking at ways we can extract more available time from the helicopters and we strongly believe that doing the maintenance ourselves will help us achieve this.”

“It’s already the busiest rescue helicopter service in New Zealand, having carried more than 17,000 patients since starting in 1988, and because of the vast area and amount of coastline in the Northland region, NEST’s capability is far greater than any other rescue helicopters.”

Demand on the service, which includes everything from patient transfers and emergency response through to long-range at-sea rescues, is increasing at a rate of 10 per cent per annum.

“That makes it even more essential that all the helicopters are used to capacity.” ¢

The ninth annual Aratapu tavern boar hunt saw Steve Nathan bringing in the heaviest pig overall weighing in at 126.9 pounds and Andrew Searle come away with the average weight of 47.3 pounds and also the biggest jaw prize.

There were 53 contestants with 16 pigs entered in total and one eel caught

by Bella Kake weighing 2.15 pounds.

The set of 4x4 Bridgestone tyres which were donated by Bridgestone Tyre Centre Dargaville were won by Craig Coughlin in the lucky draw on Saturday night.

“We really appreciate all our sponsors for the event,” said manager Donice Hall-Morris.

“I like the way the community comes together and supports the Kiwi tradition every year. I am privileged to be a part of it and carry on the event.

It is a complete community effort and we couldn’t do it without those

who support us including the bands, sponsors, attendees and hunters.” The biggest pig on Saturday was caught by Lawrence Cherrington at 122.3 pounds and Southern Netball Club had food for purchase while Liverpool St band played on Saturday night and Anna Marie Cutts entertained on Sunday.

“I enjoy pig hunting, it’s good exercise and a good way to feed my whanau,” said Steve.

“Wild pig hunting is important because wild pigs are a nuisance to farmers and destroy the land. They also kill and eat newborn lambs and cause a lot of damage — costing farmers a lot of money.” ¢

The classes also assist people with smartphones and tablets enabling the older generation to stay in touch with modern society.

“There are many ways to tap, touch, hold or slide and once this is learned with friendly tutors your own age, technology is a breeze. Seniors teaching seniors and sharing knowledge with others is the SeniorNet motto.”

The group are always on the look out for those experienced in information technology who have time to share their skills. They invite anyone to come along to SeniorNet on open days. These are held every third Monday of the month at 1pm and this month on September 21.

Bayly’s Beach has always been a popular holiday spot ­— a well kept secret nestled on the west coast. Now, however, the secret may be out.

One of the beachside village icons, the Funky fish restaurant, has attracted curiosity and interest since it was put up for sale earlier in the year. Houses, some of them traditional baches and others more substantial, have also been getting a lot of scrutiny. It’s all part and parcel of a sea-change in how those from out of the area view the Kaipara — especially those who are keen to quit the big city for a lifestyle boost.

The Funky Fish, famed for a roll-call of live concerts featuring Kiwi artists, is just one example of what Baylys Beach offers the so called ‘baby boom’ generation who are increasingly keen to find that place in the sun to enjoy their retirement years.

A beachside village with a small restaurant, a well provisioned general store, hot takeaways and scenic views all fit the bill — no wonder that enquiries

The mural took three weeks to complete and was funded by a Pub Charities grant as well as donations by club members. “It enhances the display and gives visitors a visual impression of what the equipment was used for,” said Belinda. “It’s a fabulous piece of work and very indicative of the area.” The work was painted freehand and includes a typical Kaipara bush hut scene as well as a historical cemetery representing those who lost their lives in the bush. The club is open every Wednesday and Saturday and costs $8 per adult with under 15-year-olds free.

Chairman of the Mangawhai Business Development Association Richard Gunson says he believes the golf course will benefit the community.

“It’s obviously good for the area as it has bought a lot of employment during it’s construction. I am picking that although there won’t be a huge spin off from the people that go there, there will be some.“ It is expected that the multi-million dollar course, designed by American Tom Doak, has brought an estimated $5.9 million to the regional economy over the construction and grow-in periods. Members of this club are mostly internationals and the club

estimates that it will be responsible for 7,000 visitor days in the country by 3,500 people which is expected to bring $4.5 million to the region per year.

The golf club currently employs 44 staff and will be bringing in more prior to the opening. There are also 60 contracted caddies and many local businesses who have been working on the course full time during the developments.

The course will be surrounded by 46 residential lots with golf course sites valued from $2.8 to 4 million, and will include a clubhouse, a fitness centre and a beach club. ¢

Edward Vennel Sweet, known as Ted, was born at Te Kopuru and at the age of 83 he has returned to Dargaville to be near one of his seven sons.

His father died when he was nine-years-old leaving his mother to bring up nine children.

“I earned four shillings a week delivering the Herald at 10-years-old. I gave my mother three and was allowed to keep one,” said Ted. “Originally our family name was Cvitanovich. This was hard to say and spell. We got teased, particularly after dad had died. Cvitanovich p Retired Major Edward Vennell Sweet with his ‘Flaming A’ emblem which resembles a qualified ammunition means ‘sweet flowers’ so technical officer our mum changed our name to Sweet and this made life easier for finding explosives. Abby Bakulich from the NZ Cadet Forces No 57 Squadron Air Training Corps Dargaville recently attended the Northern Area Cadet Force Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Course and was awarded the Most Improved Cadet certificate.

“Abby has been a member for 18 months and is an outstanding cadet. She accomplished this award out of all of Northland with 55 cadets from different cadet units participating. It is a huge achievement,” said Cadet Liaison Officer Royal New Zealand Air Force Association Northland, David Reid.

The certificate is awarded to the cadet who over the duration of the course displays the highest levels of diligence required of a Junior Non p Abby Bakulich from the 57 Squadron Dargaville Air Training Corps with her Most Improved Cadet certificate Commissioned Officer.

“A friend was here so I joined to a military framework with cadets gaining be with her and I am really enjoying NZQA credits for participating. it,” said Abby.

Is your Spring project exempt from consent?

What is ‘consent’ in the language of building? The common trade term has a myriad of meanings, but it can be put as simply ‘permission to build a structure with the assurance that it complies with the rules’.

It is the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority (BCA), agreeing that certain works meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. And that, in turn, means a building to last the test of time.

Some minor work is exempt under the Act, but consent is required for most work, including the kind of jobs many folks will want to undertake this Spring. Installing swimming pools, spa pools and fencing, building substantial retaining walls, large decking projects, and of course the construction of new buildings all need consent.

Demolitions, relocations and even the installation of fireplaces all come under the consent umbrella — but the good news is that you can quickly find out if your planned work requires consent by visiting a handy website.

You can even apply online, an alternative to obtaining application forms from your local council office.

Consents are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

Many more detailed building consent applications can be complex; Council recommends that you engage a professional person to help with design

work and drawings. Fixed fees are available for some types of applications.

If your project does not meet the fixed fee criteria, the cost will depend on things like the type of application, cost of work involved and the level of detail provided.

Council’s charges are listed on its website and are based on the length of time it takes to process an application.

An estimate of the fees involved may be provided, however the final cost will not be known until the application is processed.

When your application is ready for issue and all fees are paid, your building consent will be posted, or sent electronically to the contact person nominated on the application form. ¢

The countdown is on to the biggest event on the Rugby calendar, and despite sideshows over the pilfering of the All Black’s iconic fern to garnish our nation’s flag, all eyes are on the 31-man team selected to bring home the trophy.

Of course, the pundits are out in force, as everyone from seasoned veterans in the commentary seat down to armchair coaches takes the time to second guess coach Steve Hansen’s roster. Top of the table in terms of controversy seems to be the omission of number 10 Lima Sopoaga who had such a stellar run during the Super Rugby tourney.

Certainly, it would be hard to find a Kiwi supporter who isn’t one hundred percent behind Dan Carter, especially in

his ability to act as a ‘veteran sergeant’’, an icon, and — some cynically suggest — a highly marketable spokesman for the boys in black. There are those who question his ability to physically last the gruelling distance of the biggest contest in Rugby, though it won’t be for a lack of mental toughness if injury forces him to bow out. This raises the question if perhaps Colin Slade or Beauden Barrett would have been better replaced by the rising star Sopoaga.

The winning team, Rodney Silver, consisted of Briar Woolley, Tamara and Jade Marshall and Aimee Young.

Briar, won two events in the hack show jumping and Tamara came second

and fourth in the pony show jumping.

Aimee and Jade competed in the show hunter event with Aimee winning two events in Division two in the pony ring and Jade placing sixth in two events.

The Rodney Blue team riders were Brody Goodmon Preddle, Billie Mentzer, Morgan Chandler Bruce and Brooklyn Wilson.

Be my Guest Loyalty has its own reward The resumption of Russian imports of hydrous milk fat, whey and milk protein concentrates from Fonterra sites is good news for the cooperative.

New Zealand is not on the list of Russian-banned countries and in spite of trade minister Tim Groser asking primary exporters not to exploit any possible advantage that Fonterra and others may have in dealing with Russia, the government has stated that it is important not to upset trade talks with the United States through the TransPacific Partnership and also with the European Union.

New Zealand has a history of being a good and loyal trading partner not only to Europe but also the United States, but there are numerous examples where this loyalty has not been taken into account, when Europe and America act in their own self-interest.

For more than 100 years, New Zealand’s butter and cheese had arrived in ports in Britain. During the Second World War, New Zealand supplied its dairy products under very favourable terms to the so-called mother country.

This trading relationship changed

dramatically with Britain joining the European Community, forcing New Zealand to look for alternative markets throughout Asia, Russia and latterly China.

The then NZ Dairy Board showed commercial enterprise by taking advantage of the then Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s new open ‘perestroika’ (reconstruction) and ‘glasnost’ (or openness) policies giving new trade opportunities throughout the world. Mikhail Gorbachev’s ties stem back to the Ukraine or Little Russia, along with other Russian leaders including Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Chernenko.

The Ukraine has been part of Russia for over 240 years, when Catherine the Great reached a peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire in 1774. The Crimea Peninsula which is part of the Ukraine came under Russian rule in 1783 and is a major naval base for the Russian Navy. The region’s vast wheat fields *

The current American and European embargos against Russia are because the Ukraine wants to secede from Russia, with American and European support. An interesting argument could be made — what if Hawaii, a state within America, wished to secede from the United States. Would the Americans be so accommodating if it meant giving up their naval bases there?

Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey who is the Dairy Companies Association chairman, stated in the press last week that the industry had no intention of ramping up trade with Russia as a result of the latest reinstatement of licences or any future relaxation of market access conditions and that the Association supported the Western Alliance led by America.

With the greatest of respect, the facts are that while European and American dairy farmers are receiving between $6.95 and $8.15 per kilogram of milk solids, New Zealand dairy farmers are witnessing our so-called allies dumping their surplus dairy produce caused by their embargo against Russia, into our hard-earned markets in China and throughout Asia, without a care for our struggling New Zealand dairy farmers, who may receive $3.85 per

kilogram of milk solids this year, if they are lucky. In economic terms our situation is ridiculous and completely unsustainable. They profit while we stand naively by.

It is hypocritical that we are told that we shouldn’t take full advantage of our unrestricted access to market our dairy products to Russia.

Scottish-born Tim Groser who has acted as New Zealand’s chief negotiator in trade for many years, once summarised that New Zealand could be screwed in areas of trade. Almost everything New Zealand exported was at the mercy of other countries.

It is ironical that in the book Till the Cows Came Home, Mr Grose reportedly states that to him, the key issues involved getting a framework for international law that would protect New Zealand from what he regarded as outrages.

Wealthy nations had to be stopped from ruining the country’s economic future with their export subsidies — even if a measure of quota constraint and import control might have to be accepted for some time to come.

It is my view that America and Europe should have kept this in mind when they unilaterally decided to place a trade ban against Russia to the detriment of small, agricultural-reliant countries like New Zealand.
