p Seven local schools participated in the Bream Bay cross country regional championships, held at the Maungaturoto Country Club on August 22. The day started with doubtful weather; however, all races were completed successfully and the children enjoying the muddy and slippery conditions. “We are super proud of all children who participated with a ‘can do’ attitude to complete the course — the high level of fitness and resilience was also evident. Congratulations to all participants and thank you so much to everyone who made the day possible,” said teacher, Julia Neal. The top six competitors from each age group will proceed to the Northland cross country round.

It will include ways of reducing risk on farms and how to spot symptoms of the disease. Representatives from Beef + Lamb NZ will also be attending and available for answering questions.

“As a farmer myself, I’m very mindful of the concerns of our farmers and farming families. Many will feel uncertain and worried. The disease strikes at the heart of who we are and what we do — cattle industries are the biggest part of Kaipara’s economy,” said Kaipara mayor, Jason Smith.

“Kaipara farming communities are closely connected. I know we have the resilience to rise to this challenge — together with compassion and care for each other. Quick eradication of the disease and everyone getting on with business in the new season ahead should be the focus.”

Recent amendments to the National Animal Identification and Tracing Act allow an MPI officer to enter a farm for the purpose of collecting evidence to check compliance under the act. MPI warn that farmers should maintain accurate NAIT records and check that they have robust biosecurity practices in place on their farm.

Cullen said it took minutes to register for NAIT online and he has urged Northland farmers to do so irrespectively of how many animals they have. Infringement fees for offences range between $150 and $1,000.

The Productivity Commission has recommended that up to 2.8 million hectares of trees are planted to achieve New Zealand’s carbon neutrality by 2050.

Whatever species are used, this would nearly triple our planted forest estate. It represents the biggest land use change since we first lost most of our indigenous forest cover.

It would be the biggest project ever undertaken by a New Zealand government, certainly since the 1870s.

We’ve always grown trees for their timber.

From now, trees are also to be grown in the global battle against climate change.

The government, together with iwi, farmers and the public, will need to get this right for our very environmental and economic survival.

Kaipara community members are invited to join Ruawai locals in a family-based fundraising walk on October 28.

As a part of the vision of a healthy and productive harbour, the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group held their quarterly hui recently. The 90 attendees heard from several speakers on topics concerning the ongoing future management of the Kaipara Harbour.

The walk will be approximately 6km and take about an hour to an hour and a half to complete, and afterwards, free water bottles will be available along with a sausage sizzle.

Promotions and a raffle have been supported by local businesses.

“It is suitable for all ages and will be all about having fun, we are so impressed with how local businesses are on board with us willing to help, and we are still in the early stages of

planning.” says organiser, Zarrah Duffy.

Participants will start from the Ruawai Four Square at 10am, and members from the Whangarei branch of the Cancer Society will be in attendance for discussion and information.

There is no fee for entering, however, koha is appreciated. All donations will be forwarded to the Cancer Society.

Volunteers and staff from a Kaiwaka-based nursery assisted local iwi by taking part in a planting day last Friday as a part of a major initiative to reclaim 55,000 hectares of retired forestry and farmland.

Beginning with a ceremonial planting at Aranga, the partnership between Te Roroa, the Crown and Manuka Health is planned to see more than 50 hectares of land planted in September.

“The partnership builds the iwi’s role and responsibility as kaitiaki, looking after its land and people. Manuka honey has exciting growth potential, and by planting our land we grow our skills — from hive management and honey production even further,” said Te Roroa Honey Limited business manager, Erana Clarkson.

Around 100 hives will be housed on the newly-planted land in September with a further 900 planned as the planted area extends. “This will build

manuka honey capability and capacity in Northland, generating regional economic benefits,” said beekeeper and Manuka Health’s general manager of apiculture, David Campbell.

Manuka Health works in collaboration with Maori landowners to improve the productivity and revenue from their whenua across New Zealand. The Te Roroa iwi are Manuka Health’s most recent land partner, as the company continues to invest in New Zealand from Northland to the Wairarapa.

The Crown’s One Billion Trees programme provides the seedlings free through Manuka Farming NZ, as New Zealand aims to export $1.2bn of manuka honey by 2026. ¢

These are the words of Dargaville High School deputy head girl Michaela Jenkins-Stevenson from a speech, which explored her personal connection to her culture and her language and won third place in the Nga Manu Korero National Secondary School speech competition.

The year 13 student of Ngati Whatua and Ngapuhi descent has entered the competition every year since she was in year 10 and enjoys talking about the things that matter.

“I’d never spoken about my culture in a way that would make people react like this,” Michaela said.

Questionable changes

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I write to discuss the proposed community centre/surf lifesaving hub at Baylys Beach.

A community centre is a common area that provides an opportunity for the community to gather; by gathering together, residents will feel a stronger sense of ownership as well as stewardship.

Two issues that currently need addressing are littering and potentially harmful activities (both for humans and the environment) on Baylys Beach. Building the community centre would make addressing these goals more achievable — as it would provide a reliable platform for the community to collaborate and develop a community-based beach management programme. Currently, there is no proper venue to organise

community group events, to gather to discuss the challenges or to seek new opportunities.

It is understandable that some residents have concerns, including traffic, noise pollution and liquor abuse. However, there are ways and strategies to mitigate these, including applying liquor and noise restrictions.

I would like to emphasise that research of other rural areas shows that to improve sustainability, people must stay in a healthy relationship with each other and the surrounding environment.

The community centre, if planned and managed correctly, would contribute to achieving this goal significantly over time.

Changes to the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) Act 2012 have been recently rammed through parliament under urgency by this coalition government, and there is at least one aspect of that act that needs to be treated with real concern by farmers.

The changes bolster the bid to eradicate the cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis. It makes it compulsory to declare all animal movements to NAIT and hold to account everyone who fails to do so. All well and good, and the act deservedly gets wide support from the farming community — which is why one other change to the act is completely unfathomable, unnecessary and untenable.

These changes also include giving the Ministry for Primary Industries the sweeping power to search farmers properties without a search warrant.

The question I must ask as a farmer and — yes — as a former police officer who prepared and executed many search warrants, is — why?

Why does this government feel the necessity to give farmers fewer rights than hardened criminals? A search warrant is required to search gang headquarters but not now apparently a farm. The government could not explain why they found it necessary to deprive one sector of society — farmers — of a fundamental right that even gangs are accorded.

No one questions the need to muster all the resources we can to eradicate M bovis. In doing so, to trample all over the rights of a farming community already reeling under its impact defies logic let alone compassion. It also, I believe, shows a lack of understanding of, and trust in, the farming community by this government.

What the wider public needs to remember here is that this is not just a person’s business, it’s also their home. Families should be able to go about their daily life without the fear of clipboard warriors turning up at their front door unannounced to conduct a search.

Yet, for some unfathomable reason, this government deems farmers to be different.

I am the National spokesman for rural communities and a beef farmer myself, and this concerns me greatly. Is this erosion of rights — which affects only the rural sector, an indication of this current government’s attitude towards our rural communities?

I hope not. However, the question has to be asked.

Tavern to host comedy legend

A familiar bearded face on 7 Days, award-winning comedian Ben Hurley is bringing a real comedy club experience to Mangawhai Tavern on Saturday, September 8.

Originally born and bred in Taranaki — Ben pursued a career in comedy after trying it out in Wellington.

“Growing up in a small town it [standup comedy] was never an option. I knew a few kids who had gone on to university to study acting — but it wasn’t until I started getting a few paid gigs in Wellington that I thought I could actually make a career out of it. I never made long-term goals. I just hoped it would work out.”

He then moved to London where he worked, lived and toured with cult comedy classics, Stewart Lee, Ed Byrne and Andy Parsons. An experience he says hugely influenced and launched his career.

Now he’s getting back to where it all began, in the smaller more intimate venues, comedy clubs and theatres across the country.

“I have been touring with the 7Days crew doing shows in really big theatres. I wanted to do a solo tour — so I ended up booking a lot of these smaller venues, and that became the theme of the tour.

“There’s a level of anarchy at these that you don’t get in the big theatres. Every show has been kind of crazily different.

“As I was booking the venues I started thinking this is looking like a Katchafire tour, so I actually went to their website and saw they had played at the Mangawhai Tavern. Mangawhai Tavern is such a notorious venue — so it’s very exciting.”

The success of a Mangawhai initiative has expanded rapidly in recent weeks with an increasing number of followers actively involved in sharing unwanted or unused household items with others in the community.

Administrator Libby Clews, with husband Mike and friend Diann Glucina, maintain people’s needs and requests through a Facebook page Mangawhai’s Helping Hands — which now has almost 800 members.

“Whilst the core function is gifting items — we have begun to see this as a real community support group, and as such are sharing weekly tips from experts in regard to mental health, financial advice and healthy eating,” said Libby.

“We have teamed up with the Te Whai Community Trust to help those that need emergency house set-ups”.

The gifting on the community group can be something as small as a calculator right up to a piano, preventing items from being dumped in a landfill.

“It’s helped me save as I’ve been gifted something that I no longer need to purchase. From being helped out I’ve loved the opportunity to repay gifting with food items, clothing, household gifts and bedding — it’s rewarding in all ways to be a part of this group,” said follower, Ladene Yelcich.

Another page follower, Joanne Waterson, said: “People’s generosity here is truly amazing, there is so much pleasure not only in giving, but in receiving, with a ‘pay it forward’ attitude.”

Changes to the legislation that governs how Councils make Alcohol Control Bylaws require the Kaipara district Council to replace our existing bylaw with a new one by December 2018.

These alcohol control areas (also known as alcohol bans) are designed to create safe public spaces. They are usually introduced because of concern about disorderly behaviour and criminal offending linked to the consumption of alcohol in certain areas.

New legislation passed in 2012 means that to create any new alcohol control areas, councils must have strong evidence that the consumption of alcohol in a public place is contributing to a high level of crime and disorder in that location.

The definition of a public place for alcohol control areas has also been broadened and can now apply to public places, such as school playgrounds or supermarket carparks.

Council must also be able to justify retaining existing control areas through good feedback from the NZ Police and our communities.

Bright yellow daffodils drew the attention of local shoppers — within the first 30 minutes of beginning their fundraising efforts last Friday, the ANZ Bank Dargaville team had replenished their table three times with baked goods and produce.

Hundreds of dollars in goods, services and vouchers donated from local businesses will be distributed after the 60 draws are made next week.

“We are very grateful to local businesses for their donations towards the raffle and totally humbled by the community for their support,” said ANZ bank representative, Thelma Bagnall.

Dogs’ day out in Paparoa

Students at the Matakohe School have produced a winning fundraiser for their upcoming camps, with the support of the local community and businesses.

Dog owners in the Kaipara district are invited to bring their family pets along to the Paparoa showgrounds for a fun day out, enter into light-hearted competition and watch agility displays.

They have a limited supply of eco bags available for sale — which have been designed and made by the children and their parents.

Local parent, Wendy Sheppard, instigated the project and gained support as it grew.

“We have had some great sponsorship from Har vey Furnishings and Sleep Systems NZ in Ruawai, and fantastic support from our parents and community,” said Wendy.

t began in a maimai during duck season of 1969. A funny place for a huge agricultural venture to kick off, but when mushroom farm manager Gary Blundell and cattle stud farm manager Clive Smith got talking, they both saw the potential for a huge cultivated mushroom farm in Ruawai. Soon Mr C.W. (Coe) Smith, the owner of the mighty Greenhill Stud farm and breeder of award winning polled hereford cattle, was on board, financing the venture.

So too was Ray Balcombe, weighing in as farm manager. It was an ambitious project, but a bit of can-do Ruawai spirit — and a great opportunity to supply Foodtown supermarkets — saw success spring up like — well, like mushrooms. True to a tradition of generosity which would

last through the generations, the first box of produce was given to the local fire brigade!

Over the years, what began as an effort to help improve the kumara cultivation industry and market the sweet-tasting root vegetable slowly took over as its popularity grew. It was a hard decision to shut down mushroom production, but the demand for kumara has just kept growing!

Today, Kaipara Kumara and the Blundell family look back on a very interesting history, and, as you can tell from the name, there's still a big family connection in the business. Take a look back through the dusty archives of olden-day newspapers, and there’s something very different about the advertising on display.

Not just the quaint items for sale such as miracle cures and outmoded appliances from the age of steam — there’s a change in the names of companies as well. In colonial times, most businesses carried the name of their founder first and what they did last.

More often than not, they had their family in between. So it is that ‘Joe Smith and Sons, General Carriers’ or ‘Jeff and James Jones Brothers, Boilermakers’ seem like names out of the wild west.

It’s a time not long past. Certainly, in those days a family business really meant family, as seen in Dargaville’s history, where respected local men’s outfitter Jack Fannon began work with his father’s company as a mere schoolboy, and went on to serve his community for decades, carrying on the family name, which still adorns the main street as his legacy. Many other respected family names in our local towns can be traced back to early settlers, and more still to an establishment in the early days of last century. While some have seen new management proudly retain a heritage

brand, others are in their second or third generation of family ownership.

Then, there are those partnerships forged on family ties — which go on to make sound business sense. More than one business relies on a husband and wife using their particular strengths to achieve commercial success.

Sometimes he does the heavy work while she maintains the books — sometimes vice versa!

In other cases, brothers and sisters join forces to either take on mum and dad’s work or to start their own company. In all these scenarios one might assume the possibility for fights and arguments is ever present, but the statistics prove otherwise.

It seems the family that works together sticks together, becoming stronger for it.

Of course, it’s all good news for the customer. Though it seems like a trite observation, it’s true that even teams made up of total strangers can begin to feel a bit like a family after working side by side for many years! ¢
