 The Northland Roller Mills team has fought its way through to the semi finals with an intense game against Auckland West last weekend. Team management have praised “huge support from Northlanders waving their flags and encouraging the boys to play with heart,” with Anton Weight winning Player of the Day. The team goes to Tauranga next weekend with the chance of further honours in a semi-final against Auckland East and then, hopefully, the finals the same weekend.

That includes the building of six asphalt-surfaced courts for shared tennis and netball use; building a 580 square-metre facility incorporating six changing rooms, a 24/7 unisex

public toilet, a canteen/coffee outlet and a tournament control office. A covered muster area is also included to provide shelter for players from rain and sun.

 Art enthusiasts were out in force last weekend to experience the bi-annual Art Trail, hosted by the Mangawhai Artists Association. The event attracted it’s highest ever turnout of visitors, reassuring organisers that staging it in early spring was a good decision. With 12 venues, there was plenty to see and do, and among the art on show was Mangawhai Heads artist Jennifer Colgate’s exhibition of airbrushed Pop Art.

 Lady Alexandra Smith was guest of honour at Hospice Kaipara’s fundraising luncheon at Matakohe last week. The former Otamatea High School guidance counsellor spoke about her experiences of life abroad after relocating to London with her husband Sir Lockwood Smith, New Zealand’s Ruawai-born High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Over 100 people attended the event and the auctions and raffles proved popular.

It may be a far cry from the packed stadiums of Rio but winning the Special Olympics is still something special for a group of Dargaville athletes.

“This facility will provide benefit to all sporting codes currently and potentially using the park, and there is also ample room for the development of permanent petanque courts,” says Mr Biddles.

“The significance of the project cannot be underestimated — one in eight people in the Dargaville and surrounding areas will use the facility, and indirectly the whole area will benefit.”

Mr Biddles says the society is set to lodge funding applications early next year. He hopes the netball and tennis courts will be in use by winter 2016.

Memorial Park is owned by Kaipara District Council which is currently developing a management plan for it.

Dargaville Tennis Club, one of the sporting bodies involved in the proposal has welcomed the study.

“It’s very exciting. It’s the future of tennis,” says president Lynley Clements.

While the club owns courts in Station Rd, Mrs Clements says they are in disrepair. Getting funding to fix them up has proved difficult and means the club’s 60 members have less-than-ideal playing surfaces.

She says being part of a larger group will make it easier to find funding.

The Sportsville proposal requires clubs to sell unwanted assets and contribute the proceeds. Mrs Clements says the club is prepared to sell its Station Rd property to help make the shared facility a reality.

Northern Wairoa Soccer Club president Dharmendra Kumar says his club is right behind the proposal. “It’s fantastic. We’re all for it.”

Mr Kumar says Sportsville will provide better facilities for the club’s more than 200 players, many of whom are juniors. It will also mean the club will be able to spend less time on fundraising and maintaining facilities and focus more on playing the game.

“It’s a win-win for us.” 

Katrina Williams is new to football and has different reasons for taking part. “It helps me get fit. I love the social side.”

It was the first time a Dargaville team has taken part in the tournament. They were up against teams from Waikato, Papakura, Waitakere, Greenhithe, North Harbour and Whangarei. And they had to play four games in one day.

Although the event was played in unsettled showery weather, the Dargaville players adapted well to the conditions.

With the football season now over, most of the players will move to track and field or swimming for the summer. 

Sportsville given green light

Last weekend a team of enthusiastic Dargaville players, organised through the Greenways Trust, emerged victorious at a Special Olympics football tournament at Albany on Auckland’s North Shore.

The Special Olympics is an international movement that encourages people with physical and intellectual disabilities to participate in competitive sport.

What made that win even more meritorious was that for most of the team it was the first time they had played competitive football.

Greenways trust community facilitator, Roz Gilmour, who accompanied the team says it was a special achievement.

“They learned a lot. Everybody showed skills they didn’t know they had.”

Over the winter they trained in the Dargaville High School gym under the keen eye of coach Alistair Grant.

Calf Club days have been a fun fixture of the Kiwi rural calendar for over a century, and this year’s school gala and pet day at Maungaturoto Primary School will draw on this fine old tradition.

The action is planned to kick off at 10am as the judging gets underway for all kinds of animals at the school’s Pet Day — an expansion of the traditional Calf Club seen at hundreds of New Zealand schools.

At noon the gala itself opens the gates, with games and activities including everything from an old fashioned coconut shy and  Student Cameron Fitzpatrick with his award winning calf at last years Pet Day treasure hunt to a huge bouncy castle and rock climbing wall RD1. But the prizes aren’t limited to sponsored by dairy giant Fonterra. There those participating — everyone who will also be displays of horticulture, arts comes along will also go into the draw and crafts and baking, with decorated for a Sharp boom box and a Samsung cakes and cupcakes.

Mangawhai ratepayers who refuse to pay rates in protest over the cost of the town’s contentious sewerage scheme may have to appear in court, with the Kaipara District Council set to take legal action to recover unpaid rates.

Chief commissioner John Robertson says the council is starting its debt collection process to recover more than $2.3 million in uncollected rates and penalties from Mangawhai ratepayers.

He says the first step will be to send letters to banks seeking payment whether there is a mortgage over the property, or to the ratepayers where there is not. “We’ll await the outcome.”

While no court papers have been filed yet, Mr Robertson says that is a likely outcome if ratepayers or their banks fail to pay up.

The Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association has appealed the High Court’s decision that the rates are valid. The Court of Appeal has yet to set a hearing date, although the case is unlikely to be heard until next year.

The MRRA has said the council should wait until the appeal has been decided before pursuing unpaid rates.

However, Mr Robertson disagrees.

“The High Court has made a clear ruling.

There is no doubt that the rates are due and payable.”

The association’s lawyer had asked the High Court for an order preventing the council from going after defaulting ratepayers until the Appeal Court has ruled. However, Justice Heath rejected that request.

Mr Robertson says some ratepayers have paid up before the deadline for rates instalments on June 30. The balance of unpaid rates dropped from $6.3 million to $5.3 million between June 30 and July 31.

The council is still also owed about $1.7 million in rates from multiply-owned Maori land. Mr Robertson says those rates are for unproductive land and most of it is unlikely to be recovered.

He expects the council to write off the unpaid amount after six years. 

 Kaipara nurses, doctors and other health professionals came together at Dargaville Hospital last week to celebrate the launch of a system that gives them instant access to health records. The Shared Care Record has been developed by Medtech Global and covers 11,600 Kaipara people.

However, their records will only be available for clinical care purposes and every time one is accessed it will be reported. Marcus Liddell from Orr’s Pharmacy says the system will help professionals make better decisions and that will benefit patients.

Changes at the top This week Council staff members will farewell their Chief Executive, Steve Ruru.

Steve is leaving Kaipara to take up the Chief Executive role at the Southland District Council. His contribution to the Council organisation over three years has been tremendous. He came to a Council under enormous pressure, and leaves it in much better shape.

Dr Jill McPherson takes over the Executive leadership role on 1 October. Well-known in local government circles from years of experience at Auckland City Council, she lives in Mangawhai, and was recruited by Steve Ruru to become part of his executive leadership team 18 months ago.

Dr McPherson will be the Acting Chief Executive, through to March 31 next year.

By this time we expect to know whether the Northland Councils will be reorganised.

If so, we will likely ask Dr McPherson to stay on as Acting Chief Executive until reorganisation takes place. If not, Council will advertise the Chief Executive position.

Council’s finances – we are living within our means The Council’s Annual Report for the year ending 30 June 2014 will be considered by Council for adoption at its Council meeting in Dargaville on Tuesday this week.

For the second year in a row, we are reporting a small operating surplus, and a further reduction in debt. That is good news.

While the financial position of the Council has improved over the past two years, there is more to be done to reduce risks. In the short term: • We need to defend the actions being taken by the Mangawhai Ratepayer and Residents Association. Regretfully, they have lodged an appeal to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the High Court relating to the Judicial Review.

• We need to catch up on rehabilitation and capital works on our roads. Much of last summer’s work, totalling $6.5 million, was deferred as a result of the rates being withheld from Council by some property owners. Now that most property owners have brought their rates up to date, you should expect considerable road works to take place over the summer months.

• We need to collect the rates that are being withheld by remaining property owners.

These are people who are still listening to advice to withhold their rates from the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association. The majority of Mangawhai ratepayers who are withholding rates live in Auckland. Paying up now will avoid legal action or demands made on mortgagees being made by Council.

Town challenges – the old and the new There is increasing discussion about regional development. Recently I saw a programme on Sixty Minutes forecasting the “death” of Wanganui.

Towns and villages do change over time, but rarely do they “die”. In Kaipara we have Mangawhai where growth is high and where town planning will become increasingly important. At the other extreme, on the west coast, our once largest Kaipara town, Te Kopuru, has shrunk considerably.

It is likely that Kaiwaka will change dramatically over the next three decades, as the extension to the motorway from Puhoi takes place. Maungaturoto too will see an impact. Our villages like Paparoa and those lessor known ones like Whakapirau on the Harbour will become increasingly attractive over time, as they are discovered by those who seek a fishing and boating retreat.

These changes become reflected in property prices. In the next few months, the new Quotable Value NZ values that Council uses to strike rates on will be released.

These will be of interest to all Kaipara property owners.

With the festive season just around the corner, Dargaville’s two Lions clubs want to hear from groups wanting to enter floats in this year’s Christmas Parade.

School holidays are here, and the weather is getting warmer with summer on it’s way. What better chance to try out two top summer sports, and have fun doing it?

Sport Northland have teamed up with Northern Wairoa Tennis and Cricket to give kids a hands-on experience of these two summer games, enjoyed by generations of Kiwis.

On Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th of October, right in the heart of the holidays, they’ll be offering a double-header sportsfest, serving up tennis action and then a day of fastpaced cricket.

Both days seek to introduce kids to the game and build fundamental skills, but above all else, the aim of

the holiday programme is to have a great time. At the end of play on both days participants will head across to the Anzac Theatre to take in a movie as well!

If you’re into sports, and want to enjoy a couple of fun days on the court or on the pitch, contact Sport Northland’s Roxanne Kelly or Joey Yovich on 09 439 3188 to register.

It could prove to be the spark which inspires a full summer of tennis or cricket action — and it’s a great way to spend a spring day in Dargaville. 

 The call is out for colourful floats to brighten up Dargaville’s Christmas parade this year

Noel Moran from Dargaville Lions which is organising the event with help from Northern Wairoa Lions, says the parade will take place on Saturday December 6.

He wants to hear from churches, schools, community groups, youth groups and sports clubs interested in entering floats.

The 2014 theme will be ‘A Fairytale Christmas’. “We hope that will get the kids involved.” He says the Tongan brass band that was such a big hit in

2013 will return for this year’s parade.

The 35-piece band will lead the parade and is likely to bring 80 members and supporters to Dargaville for the occasion.

There is a $25 entry fee for floats, while it costs $10 to enter without a float.

Entry forms will be mailed out by the end of October. In the meantime, Mr Moran asks anyone interested in taking part to contact him at Moran’s Bookshop, phone 09 439 6149. 

The search is on for the outstanding Kaipara sports performers of the year.

Ms Breed departs this week to take charge of Cranford Hospice in Hastings.

Although she has been general manager of Hospice Kaipara since May 2009, she is also well known in the Kaipara district from her 30 years of nursing experience, including a period as District Nurse.

Marie said she took on the top job in Hospice Kaipara because “it was a chance to specialise in an area of nursing I wanted to learn more about.

It was also an opportunity to work with Margaret Hearn. She is a nurse I have great respect for. She’s an awesome person.”

Ms Breed says the hospice work is more than about caring for people with terminal illnesses. “It’s about helping people come to grips with a diagnosis that’s not going to be good for them.”

Ms Breed says the job at Cranford Hospice is an exciting opportunity because Cranford, unlike Hospice Kaipara, runs a residential care facility with eight patient beds. “It’s got a wide catchment and a lot of resources.”

They will be recognised at the 2013/14 Kaipara Sports Awards to be held at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Dargaville on Friday November 7.

But to be recognised, they first have to be nominated.

Awards will be given out in a number of categories.

ASB Code Awards recognise individuals who have achieved to a high level in an individual or team sport, while the ASB Youth Sportsperson Achievement Awards are for young people 19 or under who have achieved success on the sportsfield.

Older competitors are recognised through the Pacific Motor Group Masters Sportsperson of the Year Award, while awards for coaches and referees or umpires have been sponsored by Kaipara District Council and Steinlager Pure respectively.

Other awards include the Newman Engineering Club of the Year and the Barry Markwick Memorial Service to Sport Awards.

The top prizes — Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year and the Supreme Award are all sponsored

by Silver Fern Farms.

Nominations close on October 10.

ROAD SAFETY DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

As Ford in Dargaville prepare for their second annual Ranger Reunion — and the big reveal of their ‘Lone Ranger’ version of the popular pickup.

Ford in Australia have been researching ways to make the winning Ranger formula carry over into a new generation of vehicles. And they’ve done so by playing computer games.

This is not your regular Xbox or Playstation console, however. It’s a copy of Ford Detroit’s cutting-edge virtual reality lab, a space which delivers four times the resolution of HD through a direct optical interface, allowing whole new cars and trucks to be built, engineered, tuned and tested in a digital world, long before the factory tools up to build them.

The Ford immersive Vehicle Environment (or FiVE) uses motion capture technology and powerful graphics to put a test driver in the seat of a brand new Ford, without the need to build a prototype. Ford bosses hope that the new technology will help them to perfect and hone new models before they even get to the stage of pre-production, saving many hours and thousands of dollars, as well as crafting an even better experience for eventual buyers.

“Ford was one of the earliest adopters of this type of virtual reality in the development process, and the quality

of our new FiVE lab shows how far Ford is willing to go for craftsmanship and attention to detail when designing its vehicles,” says Peter Bunting, AP digital innovation manager.

Similar technology was used to put the new Mustang through its paces, resulting in tweaks and changes before the 6th-gen flagship muscle car even left the lab.

The result, according to Ford, is a revolution in how new vehicles are

designed and will greatly improve performance from the factory floor to the highway. As a mighty team of Ford Ranger utes line up outside Dargaville Ford on the 10th, it’s likely that lessons learned from the ute’s success are being plumbed into exciting new prototypes in cyberspace.

This year alone the new tech has been used to make over 150,000 alterations to 200 prototype vehicles in development, with more to come. 

Free food for Kaipara senior citizens may sound fanciful, but thanks to Gabrielle Freeman and a group of volunteers, its a fact.

They operate under The Gaya Tree, an umbrella organisation that has its basis in Indian philosophy and which brings together like-minded people to reconnect with nature and offer products and services related to wholesome living.

The Gaya Tree places value in service activities and coordinator Gabrielle and her six volunteers are demonstrating this by providing free meals to seniors on a weekly basis as part of their Food from the Heart cooperative to give thanks and pay respect to elders in the community.

“We aspire to provide seniors from the Mangawhai/Kaiwaka area with at least one healthy, nourishing, organic meal a week. The meals are distributed

by The Gaya Tree children, who are being encouraged to learn about generosity, giving and community service,” says Gabrielle.

Meals can be collected at midday on Fridays from the Senior Citizens Hall in Fagan Place, Kaiwaka, or from the Mangawhai Markets on Saturday mornings. Home deliveries can also be arranged.

“Every Friday we gather fresh organic produce donated by members of the community, and then make the meals at the Domain Kitchen in Mangawhai.

To ensure that the food is of the highest quality, all the whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried herbs and spices that we use are certified organic.”

As well as selling fresh organic produce at the Mangawhai and Takapuna markets, The Gaya Tree is the brand name for alternative organic products, such as nut butters, dips, spreads and drinks. The group also hosts events and workshops.
