Janelle’s husband Gordon is her personal photographer, and the family are often seen at such events. “It was so beautiful to see the whole family dressed up and make such a big effort,” says show organiser Roz Dennis. “We had a brilliant day with more than 130 cars turning up. Dressing up like Janelle is a dying art, and we would love to see other ladies in character at the National Street Rod Association Nationals in Paihia on Labour Weekend. The wharf upgrade is part of the Kaipara Wharves project, led by the Kaipara District Council with an $860,000 grant from the Provincial Growth Fund.

There are presently five different designs for pontoon access being considered.

Specialist maritime construction contractors working for the Kaipara District Council have begun the first phase of assembly for the Dargaville pontoon dock, taking over the old sandlot by the Mangawhare bridge.

Whanau Awhina Plunket needs more volunteers to help provide support to community members alongside local Plunket clinical teams providing child health and development services.

The pontoon, designed to be a link in the chain of Kaipara Harbour wharves creating a tourist boating loop, has been delivered in sections. A giant crane has been assembled to help with the process of placement.

When complete, the floating structure will sit at the centre of Dargaville, where Hokianga Road meets the Northern Wairoa River. An existing covered entranceway served a previous pontoon, which has subsequently been removed.

A ‘red-letter day’ is in store in Maungaturoto as the Riverside Rest Home’s $3.6 million dementia unit build is being capped off with its roof, after a three-year saga of red tape and community fundraising finally comes to fruition.

The Northland Rescue Helicopters’ team is gearing up for the annual fundraising appeal.

The most recent delay came with the coronavirus emergency, which shut down building construction programmes across the country. Just weeks ago, the unit began to rise with prefabricated timber nailed up off-site.

If you can remember the Wairoa Stores that once traded across Northern Wairoa, it would be fair to say that you have been around for quite a while.

With modern cars and good roads, shoppers can now easily shop at their supermarket in town, but in the early decades of the last century the general store with its grocery shop went out to them.

Including Dargaville and Te Kopuru there were six Wairoa Stores in the district, each easily reached in their area. They were the ‘down town’ of that locality. Advertised as a place ‘For Everything You Need’ they also did business in Mangawhare, Tangowahine, Kirikopuni and Mititai.

The headquarters and largest shop was in Victoria Street, Dargaville near where Fosters Arcade now stands. For a small boy in 1940, it was a place of amazing technology. The person serving at the counter reached overhead, popped the tendered cash into a small container hanging on a spring-loaded wire that ran over to the office. They then pulled the cord and together with the docket, the money shot over to the office window.

Complete disaster was avoided in November 1927 when an overturned blow lamp set fire to Dargaville’s Wairoa Stores’ bulk store. It was holding oil, paints, produce, ironmongery and groceries. Thanks to the Dargaville Fire Brigade, the front shop escaped damage.

In Te Kopuru, the store stood on the corner opposite the post office where Norton Street turns on to Pouto Road and opposite the post office. In Mangawhare the Wairoa Stores also included the post office and operated from the building later known as the Corner Shop and Hobsons Dairy.

To the east in Tangowahine, Wairoa Stores stood at the corner of the main road to Whangarei and the Tangowahine Valley Road. A small building; it burnt down later and was never replaced.

Further along the road towards Whangarei at Kirikopuni, their shop stood on the water’s edge between the Mangakahia River and the Northern Wairoa River. In a flood-prone area three feet of water went through the store during a major flood one afternoon just 12 days before Christmas 1934.

It prompted the shifting of the shop to higher ground two years later.

The sixth store down at Mititai was also sitting on a corner where the main road heads south and where you drive

up the hill to Arapohue Show Grounds.

It was not quite the centre of town.

In a whirlwind visit by bus, deputy prime minister Winston Peters stopped in at a plethora of Dargaville businesses and organisations last week, with special accolades going to Dargaville High School’s successful building academy.

Dargaville’s new hub for community support in fighting addiction has opened at the corner of Kapia and Paerenga Streets.

It was part of a big week in politics, which saw engagements in Dargaville with the National Party on economics and the New Conservatives on both fiscal and social issues. The leader of New Zealand First stopped in at Integrity Community Media, and the Dargaville Community Development Board last Thursday. Ruawai College students joined together in their house colours for the school Winter Sports House Festival last week.

“The students participated in a variety of sports including football, unihoc, volleyball and touch in their house teams,” says sports coordinator Raymonde Huriwaka.

“Unihoc is a game played with plastic sticks, shorter than in field hockey, and with a plastic, very light ball or a puck.

Teams have one goalie who must stay within five feet of their goal. At the start of each half the game is started with a face-off.

“Tutus, leis, headbands and face painting were just some of the

personalised outfits on display. It was Totara House that was the overall winners of the event, followed closely

by Rimu and then Kauri House.

“This was the second to last interhouse competition of the year. Our final competition in late October will determine who wins the house shield for 2020.

“The teams played 20 minutes each game and a great day was had by all as we come to the close of the term. We are looking forward to another positive term when they return to school.” ¢

Dargaville-born musician Kevin Friedrich has been busy for the past few months, kept away from his usual occupation and his expatriate home in New York. He’s taken the time to record an album featuring songs inspired by the Kaipara, and now it’s set for release.

Kevin’s desire to collaborate with acclaimed Kiwi composer Gary Daverne has come to fruition after 30 years of planning and timetable mismatches.

Gathering collaborators such as longterm friends, Lionel and Elena Reekie, and the musical scope and power of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, he’s hit the studio to record The Journey. The nine-track album features the multi-part, 17-minute-long Anzac trilogy alongside locally-inspired tracks such as Gem of the Kaipara and Day of Aranga.

Throughout, he shows the versatility and range of the accordion as an instrument, which can encompass everything from soulful solos to a

starring role amid the multi-chord complexity of a full orchestra in song.

Now, with the recording done, Kevin wants to celebrate, and he’s inviting Dargaville and Kaipara locals to join him for an album release party on Sunday, October 4.

At 2pm on that day, he, composer Gary Daverne and supporting artists Lionel and Elena Reekie will present some background to the album’s meaning, while previewing some of the stand-out tracks and treating visitors to some live interpretations. It’s a great chance to experience some world-class music crafted by one of Dargaville’s most talented locals, and it’s free of charge. ¢

If you haven’t ridden a bicycle for the past 20 years, you’re missing out. That’s the message, which was delivered in a short half-hour test ride of the latest in cycling technology; a revelation as to just how far pedal power has come.

Of course, that’s the key to it, because pedal power alone might not have sufficed to turn back the calendar for this test driver and bring back memories of pre-teen daredevilry on suburban asphalt. A clever new hybrid system hidden in the sleek, chunky frame of Giant’s new Fathom E+ 29 did the trick, however, and made one seriously out-ofshape reviewer feel superhuman.

To explain; the Fathom is a new breed of e-bike, packed with the kind of battery tech Elon Musk dreams about and equipped with a clever way of deploying it. Rather than adopting a tiny throttle like a small motorcycle, this bike augments the normal pedalling motion with an unobtrusive little surge of energy. While this makes one feel like Superman, cresting steep hills with only a modicum of effort and sweat, the analogy is better if you consider that other superhero, Bruce Wayne. While

you don’t have to dress like a bat to enjoy the advantages of an electric motor beefing up your muscle power, this bike is like the Gotham hero’s butler, Alfred. Always there to carry you through with a bit of encouragement at the right time.

It takes absolutely zero getting used to. There’s no learning curve at all, for those who used to get out on two wheels as a kid. Just jump on, select a gear, and go for it. The brain may be old and cobweb-infested, but the body remembers leaning into corners, clicking down a gear for hills, standing up on the pedals to boost ahead, bearing down with a bit of extra force. All the e-bike does is compensate for 20 years of pies, and yes, it does supply a modicum of exercise as much as you wish, in fact. Repeated applications may very well pare back the pie encumbrance, I’m told.

Leading scientist shifts climate parameters u by Andy Bryenton

One of the most important scientific theories, which has been used to formulate environmental policy on farming, has been called into question recently, leading to hard questions from farming advocacy groups here in New Zealand.

With debate already raging over the balance between reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the necessity for a robust rural economy, the recalculation of the impact of methane on the climate by one of the leading scientists in the field has provided rhetorical ammunition for the pro-agriculture lobby. Spokesperson for Kiwi agricultural science advocacy group, Facts About Ruminant Methane (FARM), Robin Grieve, says that it is ‘almost unbelievable’ that one of the leading methane scientists in the world, Dr Myles Allen, has adjusted the calculation of methane harm from 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) to a mere seven times.

Dr Allen is no climate change denier, and neither is he a poorly informed

secondary source. The respected doctor is head of the Climate Dynamics group at the University of Oxford’s Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department. He leads the world in computer simulation modelling of climate change and has won many scientific awards for his work. Now, FARM reports that he’s insisting that the European Union drop the official figure of ‘28 times more potent than CO2’ and accept the new calculation he backs.

The implications for Kiwi lawmakers are just as vast, and in an election year, even more, pressing.

Value judgement

When it’s time to choose a quad bike for the farm, the emphasis is definitely on hard work. There’s a calculation to be made between how much the machine costs, how hardy it is in the field, and just what kind of jobs are expected of it.

Often, the mathematics of maintaining a good bottom line means that simpler tasks around the paddocks are achieved with the good old tried and true twowheeler; perhaps a ubiquitous farming machine like Kawasaki’s Stockman 250. At just a shade above $6,000 this represents good value for money in a package that’s versatile, nimble, easy for even novices to use, and stable in the mud and rough terrain we’re used to on Kiwi farms.

How about this, though. How about an upgrade for $787. That’s the price of a budget overseas holiday, which we all know isn’t happening this year. However, for this small chunk of change, you can upgrade in the Kawasaki line-up from a 250cc two-wheeler to a full disc-braked, CVT transmission equipped four-wheeler packing 300cc and a bit more power.

There’s no need, right here, to go into the many little ways in which a quad bike is more utilitarian than a two-wheeler around the farm. Towing small trailers and carrying bigger loads is just the beginning. With many of you reading this right now committed to quad ownership, we’d be preaching to the choir in a major way. It’s just that usually, the price gap between a small, functional two-wheel farm bike and a mid-sized quad is a bit wider. That’s why the Kawasaki Brute Force 300 looks so good as a proposition for those who need a general-purpose quad but don’t want to spend the earth.

If you don’t really need massive horsepower, a high top speed and lots of creature comforts like heated seats and grips, extra boxes, bags and racks, or futuristic styling, this no-nonsense

Insight into fieldwork’s future

The engineers at CNH Industrial were looking to the future ahead of 2019’s European Agritechnica, and what they came up with is a reflection of a trend, which has changed passenger vehicles and inner cities, but has yet to make a huge impact on the farm.

Their Steyr hybrid concept treats power in a whole new fashion, delivering a look into tomorrow.

As far as design studies go, this is no mere clay model with nothing under the hood. Steyr, a company in the same stable as industry giants Case IH and New Holland, has delivered a machine, which combines a diesel power plant with several electric motors, as well as the facility to send voltage to electrically powered or controlled implements.

In their own words: “What requirements will a tractor have to meet in future? We asked ourselves this very question before developing the Steyr Concept. This concept combines innovative technologies in a hitherto unique way to create an environmentally friendly, yet efficient and, above all, functional tractor concept. At the heart of the system lies a modular hybrid electric drive, comprising a combustion engine, a generator, and several electric motors.

The selection of these components creates a compact vehicle design.”

That, and much more. Under the futuristic skin, the big red and white machine has a diesel-electric hybrid drive train like those used in military subs.

A four-cylinder 204 horsepower engine is mated to an electric generator, feeding a battery bank and sending voltage to four independent electric wheel motors, and a fifth motor that drives the PTO system. As one could imagine, this allows for infinitely variable torque vectoring to grip in even the worst conditions, as well as impressive transit performance on the road.

The new Steyr is also set up to power electrically-driven implements, a new breed which is starting to emerge from the manufacturers of Europe. Hence a set of 48V or 700V connections ready
