The planned $4 million extension of Maungaturoto’s Riverview Rest Home is a step closer with building consent approved for the first stage construction of an eight-bed secure dementia unit expected to get underway in the near future.

The full project will see an additional six-bed unit added at a later stage.

“Final costings are now in the hands of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust,” said trust chair, Don McKay. “Bank finance along with funds in hand will go a long way towards the contract price but there will be a considerable shortfall of funds so this is an appeal to the wider community.”

Mr McKay said the trust was on the verge of signing a contract that will give Riverview the opportunity to care for local people within their community

for as long as possible and eventually include hospital level care.

“It is now time to give serious consideration to financial commitment to support this project and there are several ways to do this — by direct donation, unsecured loans or debentures, bequests, even donations of livestock.

“This would be via a stock drive to be organised with cooperating local stock trading companies.”

“I won’t be able to relax until the specials are in.” While the political ground has shifted in the Northland electorate with National’s Matt King emerging with an election night majority of 1,292, he says he is taking nothing for granted.

“It was a roller-coaster night with lead changes and I really won’t fully relax until the special votes are in. I’m told they won’t really change things much but…”

Mr King flew to Wellington on Monday to begin “a round of induction’ as a first-time MP ‘buoyed up by a wave of support from the party and across the electorate.”

While special votes have still to be counted these are considered unlikely to change the outcome which sees New Zealand First Winston Peters bowing out as MP. Mr King recorded 13,686 votes, Mr Peters 12,394, while Labour’s WillowJean Prime placed third with 7,219, and as she has a high list placing, she will also be going to parliament.

While Mr Peters may have lost his seat, he is still ‘the kingmaker’ in terms of a coalition government with commentators favouring a two-party alliance with National, rather than a union between Labour, the Greens and NZ First. However, Mr Peters says he’s keeping options open until all special

votes have been tallied, so a decision is perhaps still a couple of weeks away.

Mr King has a new hat to wear as an MP after a career span as a policeman, a farmer, a tradesman and a businessman. He currently farms at Okaihau.

“Whether you’re running a small business in Wellsford, farming in Dargaville or showing visitors around in a stunning spot like the Bay of Islands, I know our local communities and their needs well,” he said on the campaign trail.

“This is a part of New Zealand that has it all — stunning natural environment, fertile land, good schools, successful businesses, and a strong community spirit,” strengths he said he planned to build on in government.

Party votes in Northland saw National with 47.8 per cent, compared to Labour’s 28.6 per cent, and NZ First’s 13.6 per cent. Other candidates were well down at the polls, with Conservative Mel Taylor recording 155 votes and Act candidate Craig Nelson 104. ¢

Within the Draft Regional Plan are catchment specific rules for our five-priority catchments, one of which is the Pouto Catchment, e.g. lake water quality maintenance and improvement, the amount of water property owners are allowed to take from the lakes and forestry planting set-backs from the lakes edges.

These rules would take precedence over the regional wide rules. Catchment specific plans can be viewed on the NRC website and also include catchment specific non-regulatory objectives.

Dargaville High School student Lani Fairbairn has been selected to go on an all-expenses paid two-week exchange to Tokyo, Japan in December this year.

The event has been running for over 20 years and is described as a day when “the museum comes alive.”

This year’s free event has a theme focussing on collections, collectors and story telling through collections.

“We are very pleased to have support from our community for this year’s day,” said collections’ curator Dr Tracey Wedge.

“Visitors will hear stories about personal collections generously lent to the museum for the day. These include miniature cars, miniature shoes, miniature bells and royal memorabilia.”

“Harold Marsh’s Alber tland photographs will be shown by his grandson Peter, in the museum’s theatre and descendants of early settlers to the area will share some of their family stories.”

The day aims to celebrate the diversity of the community through song and dance, demonstrations of artistic and craft skills, along with children’s games and many more activities.

The museum will be open from 9am with an opportunity to take part in a church service in the Pioneer Church at 9.30am. ¢

Lani, 15, has been studying Japanese at school since year nine and is one of only 15 students selected from hundreds of applicants throughout New Zealand.

“I love Japanese because of the problem solving skills you get through learning another language and how you get exposed to different cultures as well. Also we have a great Japanese teacher here,” said Lani.

Lani’s family has hosted a Japanese exchange student for the past two years so she already has several connections in Japan.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people. Being by myself and in a different culture will also be cool. We are staying with a host family and they’ll be speaking Japanese, so I’ll be forced to speak Japanese. I’m really excited.”

The Kaipara Citizen Awards have been reinstated after an absence of five years with presentations to five outstanding women in the Kaipara community.

Kaipara has welcomed eleven new New Zealand citizens in a ceremony at the Dargaville Town Hall.

Nominations were received by the Kaipara District Council for individuals that have shown leadership, inspiration, or dedication to a cause contributing to the community.

Presentations were made to Bev Ross, Valerie Mann, Lilian Radich, Colleen Preston and Stella Woolnough by mayor Greg Gent.

“I think what’s made those who have been successful stand out is not three or four years of doing something, it’s actually a lifetime of contributing and giving back,” said Mr Gent.

Bev Ross was recognised for her voluntary work for the Mangawhai Historical Society and as a curator at the past and present musuem.

As a founding member of the Dargaville Woman’s Club and Dargaville Country Woman’s club and national Plunket president plus Women’s Club

president, Valerie Mann was also celebrated for her 40 years servicing Meals on Wheels in Dargaville.

Lilian Radich has been an active member of the Dargaville community, including being involved in setting up the Anzac Theatre, supporting local netball, Wednesday Crafts, and helping transport people to and from hospital.

For over 35 years Stella Woolnough has assisted in the running of a number of Kaipara and Mangawhai community groups and continues to do so. Some of those clubs include the Kaipara Hunt Club, Mangawhai Library, domain committee, and Rally of New Zealand.

Colleen Preston has worked at The Kauri Museum at Matakohe for over 20 years, fundraised for the local Presbyterian church and helped fundraise a for a new car for the local Ruawai Plunket nurse. ¢

“I arrived in New Zealand in 1964, from England, with my parents. They got citizenship about 30 years ago and I just never got mine,” said Mangawhai Heads resident Jonny Simons.

Due to political situations around the world and retirement coming up, he thought it was about time to get onto it.

“There could be a day when I find myself on a ship being sent back, so I thought I better get citizenship. It actually felt quite nice, being told I’m part of this country.”

Jonny and his partner Wendy moved to Mangawhai just over a year ago. “We came to escape Auckland and we’ve got friends in Mangawhai. We also like beaches and have dogs. It’s a moving ahead, happening place, not to far from Auckland.” ¢

Don’t be alarmed if you spot some high-visibility motorcycle helmets in unusual places this September around Kaipara — it’s all part of ACC’s Motorcycle Awareness month.

p Two teams of Dargaville junior hockey players travelled to Whangarei to participate in the annual Northland Hockey Festival day. Coach Bev Hart said both the novice and advanced team did really well and had a ‘fantastic fun time’. The novice team won four out of the five games while the advanced won three out of four games. Both teams were coached and managed by older children Hannah Lugtigheid and Flynn Durrant.

The helmets will be placed around Northland to make people think about motorcycle safety.

Last year there were 14 serious motorcycle injury crashes in Northland and already in 2017 there have been two fatal crashes.

“All these crashes have impacted on our community, they have involved people we know, our family, friends and workmates,” says Northland road policing sergeant, Lance Goulsbro.

“Northland is becoming a mecca for motorcyclists and more and more motorcycle groups are travelling on our roads — our roads are unique, challenging and sadly unforgiving.”

Expressions of interest sought u by Joanna Manson

The Dargaville Community Development Board has been gathering information to support building a retirement village and is seeking expressions of interest from the wider community.

The idea was highlighted by Grey Power to the DCDB earlier this year and since then a feasibility report has been completed confirming the idea.

“Twenty five per cent of Dargaville’s population are over the age of 65 which is a higher ratio than anywhere else in New Zealand. The majority of these people are over 75 years and this is set to increase,” said consultant Diane Miller.

“Grey Power and the DCDB want to support the town’s ageing residents and provide options for retirement in their community when they otherwise might look to Whangarei or elsewhere.”

She said there is much to be learnt from neighbouring communities within the Kaipara and beyond that have successfully generated support to build retirement villages.

The DCDB visited River view Maungaturoto Rest Home and Village recently and learnt about their journey which started in 1993.

The location for Dargaville’s retirement village will ideally be central to town with several properties identified as possible options. However around seven hectares is needed.

The Maunganui Bluff above Aranga, suffers from instability which appears to have been further accentuated by recent weather.

Sizable rocks have damaged a house and destroyed an outhouse. An independent engineer appointed by

Mayor’s Message “AGM” It is my intention to hold an “AGM” for Council for the financial year just completed.

The meeting will be an opportunity for you to hold us to account for that year. We finished the year with a surplus of $2.8 million which will be used to retire debt. That was against a budgeted surplus (budget set by the Commissioners) of $200k. All of the surplus will be used to retire debt. The year also ended very positively from a working capital perspective, however weather meant we got less infrastructure projects completed. We will spend some time having a look at that carryover and see how much can be rolled forward or whether further debt reduction is an option.

For this year we will hold one meeting at Maungaturoto Centennial Hall on Wednesday 25 October 2017 at 1.00pm. If that is well supported we are happy to have more next year across the district.

DOC has also closed the walkway to the top of the Bluff.

Council has an Audit, Risk and Finance Committee. Its primary role is to consider financial matters in more depth than full Council has time to do, work with the auditors both internal and external and have oversight of risk. To help ensure history cannot repeat we believe it is important that Committee is independently chaired. For the first year Richard Booth, one of the Commissioners, has done the job. He believes he should step down so that Council can truly move on from that phase of its history. I would like to thank Richard for staying on to do this job for us.

In his place we have appointed Stana Pezic.

Stana is a working Chief Financial Officer, has chaired a number of Audit Committees including Crown entities. I have been a part of an Audit Committee that Stana has chaired. She is currently on the board of SCION (a Crown research entity) and is chair of their Audit Committee. Her fee will be the same as that paid to Richard (circa $5k pa).

Stana lives at Waimauku and works on the North Shore.

Roading Our regional roading groups are to get together for the first time on Wednesday 01 and Thursday 02 November 2017 with four meetings being held across the district.

Ideally we would have started these earlier, however most who put their hands up to be on these groups are farmers and we wanted to wait until on farm conditions improved and farmers could take the time out. Our intention, subject to feedback, is four meetings per year with the next one planned for late January 2018.

Citizens Awards An awards ceremony was held at Paparoa last Friday, attended by our five newly awarded citizens, and a number of previous recipients. A special mention to those of you who took the time to nominate such deserving members of the district. I would welcome you to continue to think of other people in your community who are deserving of a Citizens Award and ensure you nominate them in the next round.

Noel Hilliam The Kaipara has lost one of its great community members, Noel Hilliam, who passed away after 80 amazing years. His tenacity led to the Lighthouse Function Centre and Museum becoming a reality. His passion for marine history and the Kaipara was truly a life’s work.

Wearable Arts What a night, and sold out for both nights. The standard was as good as one would see anywhere supplemented by great local entertainment and talent. Circus Kumarani was the standout for me. Their acts were truly world class. Congratulations to Cheryl Carmichael and the many local volunteers who gave us a spectacular night.

Helping beekeepers give their bees what they need

Two senior students cook the food on rotation, after spending the week surveying their fellow students on what they would like for lunch.

“As part of our healthy eating policy at school the students and staff decided that we need to change from having a sausage sizzle every week, to having some kind of healthy eating option instead,” said principal Wayne Steele.

“We still have the occasional sausage sizzle. We are a Heart Foundation school and this is helping us towards the Heart Foundation tick.

“We feel it is important to promote healthier school lunch options and develop the students’ knowledge and skills around their lifestyle. It also aligns nicely with the Project Energize programme, through Sport Northland, that we are currently participating in.”

When in season, they will also use their own produce from the school orchard and vegetable gardens.

Wayne said that the students are enjoying the variety of food, with soups, bolognese, pizzas, ‘mouse traps’ and wraps being made. ¢

Now in its 33rd year, the annual Maungaturoto St John’s Trash to Treasure is coming up on the week of Monday-Friday, October 9-13, at the Maungaturoto Community Centennial Hall, View street. It’s open 9am-5pm everyday except Friday, closing mid-afternoon.

Organisers are seeking donations of quality goods, large and small and ask that everything be in good condition — but no mattresses or televisions.

“We have one paid person and everyone else is a volunteer. We’re lucky we live in a community where we’ve got so many supportive people willing to give their time. It’s a huge commitment and we are always needing new volunteers,” said Eileen Parsons.

Trash to Treasure is the main fundraiser each year. “With the funds, we are looking at getting defibrillators out into the community, and getting our caring caller service into place,” said Eileen.

Eye examinations available in Dargaville She said that over the last six years people requiring ophthalmology appointments in Whangarei Hospital has doubled and with the ageing population, the need for eye care is exploding.

The machine is expected to be up and running at the medical centre by the end of the year. As well as helping patients, Dr Davidson will use the OCT for research in conjunction with Auckland University.

He will also continue to work one day a week as part of the ophthalmology department, at Whangarei Hospital.

Dr Scott Davidson will be spending three months Sabbatical in the eye department at Whangarei hospital from Monday, September 18, but will be seeing some ophthalmology patients at Dargaville Medical Centre once a week and will be back to general practice on Monday, December 18.

Most land owners who have kiwi around know that kiwi and dogs don’t mix, but some still feel that their dog would not chase a Kiwi as they have never seen one. They are wrong. A kiwi has a scent that a dog can smell 100m away and dogs love chasing things.

Just because you can’t hear a kiwi calling at night does not mean there are none around. A kiwi can travel a very long distance at night in a short time looking for food. It’s not uncommon for a kiwi to come to your house at night and eat cat or dog food without you knowing they have been there.

The eighth Kaipara Art Awards celebrated the artistic endeavour of Dargaville and Mangawhai artists last Friday evening at the Mangawhai Library hall.

Artists were able to enter their work into a two-dimensional or threedimensional category and awards’ judge Richard Cranenburgh described his role as a privilege.

“My criteria was the work has to excite the senses, it’s not just a visual thing — it’s tactile, it’s colour, it’s composition.

The work has to have a soul and be stimulating to look at,” he said.

Rebecca Clist took away first place in the two-dimensional category with her acrylic and fabric on board piece ‘A walk in the evening garden’.

In the three-dimensional section Elena Nikolaeva won first place for her piece ‘Tony the Tui from Tawharanui’ which was made from mixed media, driftwood and found objects.

The judge’s awards, plus second and third placings were handed out as well as merit awards.

“This event is something that has grown and continues to grow from the artists and all the people who come along to enjoy the art,” said chairman of the Dargaville Arts Association, Allan Mortensen.

Manager Melane Quigley and like-minded locals have recruited volunteers with various skill sets which are beneficial to the creation of the Opportunity Factory, which will put profits back into the community in the form of grants.

“We’re all very enthusiastic - everyone we approached loved the idea and it’s literally snowballed from there” said Melane.

At this point the Opportunity Factory will be the main fundraising platform for the trust but Melane says they will keep their options open. For now the focus is getting the shop ready for the October 14 opening date.

“We’ve had incredible support from local businesses and we believe the Factory as it’s affectionately known, will become a hub of the Mangawhai community.”

“We are also looking for volunteers so we are in the process of taking details of those interested.”

The trust is looking at having two grant processes a year from shop profits. “When the time comes for grant

Rodney Wilson was swept back into office recently on a platform of expansion and engagement with the community, and he’s already putting his chef’s knife and spatula behind his promises, pitching in the boating club’s riverside clubhouse kitchen. And while he may have a laugh about the fact that some other newly elected politicians aren’t so quick to roll up their sleeves, there’s a serious point to the new Commodore’s actions.

By opening the doors to all comers for Friday night steak dinners and Sunday roasts, the Northern Wairoa Boating Club hopes to attract more members as well as guests. Where else, asks Rodney, can you enjoy an affordable steak with all the trimmings right on the waterside during a calm spring or summer’s evening? Funds from meals sold will go back into improving facilities for patrons and boaties, as will the takings from a string of planned live concerts held on the sprawling boating club deck by the river. And you need not be a member or even own a boat to stop by — just sign the guest book and ‘drop anchor’.

Mowing a wide, flat, open space — such as a sports field or empty paddock — is only a matter of brute power. In such conditions a wide cutting deck and a big motor are the key to success. But what if you want to compact that power and wide swathe into a machine that can cope with the real world — a world of obstacles, garden beds, kid’s toys and ornamental shade trees? That’s when you need to think outside the box.

The ability to manoeuvre a small mower is all about articulation, but when you bump up the size to that of a serious zero-turn mower — the kind you’ll need for any serious lifestyle block or farm — the main issue becomes similar to that found in motor racing.

With an open-wheeled race car it’s easy to hit the apex of every corner, because you can see where the wheel is tracking.

Using this principle, Grasshopper moved the cutting deck of their Frontmount 600, 700 and 900 series mowers to the fore, allowing the big blades to be applied with finesse. The operator, mounted up and behind the cutting implement, can see exactly where the metal meets the lawn.

In the backyard, there’s another advantage to having a low-slung cutting deck out front.

The overgrowth beneath hedges, shrubs and fences used to be a job for the weed whacker — now it can be despatched effortlessly from the comfy seat of the Grasshopper.

Once again, a direct view of the ultra-slim low profile deck means you can easily gauge by eye where to place those blades.
