A Royal New Zealand Airforce Hercules and a naval Sea Sprite helicopter came to call as the new academy building in the school grounds was opened by MP and House Speaker, Dr The Rt. Hon Lockwood Smith.

“A C130 from 40 Squadron made low passes over the school for the opening and a Sea Sprite, from No. 6 RNZN Squadron, landed on the tennis courts, so we certainly do have the attention of the defence forces,” said course founder and director of the country’s first high school aviation academy, retired teacher Paul Morrison.

The academy building was constructed with funding from the school.

“Local businesses have willingly contributed to this, and I have set up a repayment programme which will see the total of $65,000.00 being refunded, raised over the next few years. To date, close to $8,500.00 has been raised.”

Mr Morrison was head of technical studies for 18 years, before he set up the aviation course. He is a qualified pilot and holds an aircraft engineering licence. He is also qualified to inspect micro-lite aircraft, which will be built at a rate of one per three-year course.

“The course is essentially a team building concept, in which the students, currently two girls and ten boys, will be constructing a CA18 Cub Flyer aircraft, a replica Piper Cub. It is planned that each completed aircraft will then be sold on, to effectively finance the next students’ course.”

“The academy is not specifically designed to turn out aircraft engineers as such. It is more aimed at life experience and team work skills. It effectively puts students into the front-line in the marketplace when they begin looking for jobs.”

The academy is equipped to a large extent with specialised tools and machinery that Mr Morrison has built up over the years. With these the students are able to complete Level 1 and Level 2 Unit Standards in workshop safety and aircraft construction under the Industry Training Organisation.

It’s been a month of record breaking efforts for Dargaville and Northland powerlifters, as athletes from across the region put their many hundreds of hours of training into practice at two world-class events On the first of September Brian’s Gym in Dargaville played host to the Northland Bench Press Champs, and not only did ten regional records tumble, but the judges were also stunned by the dedication of up and coming power lifters. Many of these young hopefuls will be the future of the sport, and all those who competed on the 1st bettered their personal bests, with some smashing records in the process.

Queenie Lawrence and Trish Muldrock were both record breakers in the women’s competition, while Hugh Thompson, Steven Percy and Leethan Tau all set new records in their divisions among the junior men. Gym owner and champion powerlifter Brian Froggatt smashed the record in the Master men’s division, as well as Kevin Barker and Richard Ayton — the last of whom benchpressed a staggering 125kg.

Just a week later Northland’s best stepped up to the North Island Champs, doing the North proud by taking out both titles and records. Dean Price and Hayden Nauman scored a one-two in the under 19s, followed up by 1st places for Ming Ming Edgar, Hugh Thompson, Steven Percy, and Leethan Tau in their respective weight classes. Brian Froggatt took top honours for the Master men’s event.

Amazingly, three of these efforts broke records as well, while Brian’s huge 130kg effort is now the New Zealand record for the Master men’s 50–59kg class bench press. Truly a monumental performance by these athletes, and yet another record breaker for Dargaville to be proud of — not to mention a compelling reason to visit Brian’s Gym and receive training and advice from the nation’s best.

New multi-sport hub planned for Dargaville A centrally located, multi-sport hub utilising existing facilities at Dargaville’s Memorial Park along with the adjacent rugby park has been proposed in a draft sports facilities plan.

The Dargaville Sports and Recreation Infrastructure Plan, commissioned by Sports Northland, was presented to sport and recreation groups in Dargaville recently and received encouraging feedback.

New infrastructure proposed for the site includes a shared, centrally located, multi-functional hub facility with members lounge, function space, toilets, changing rooms, storage and administration space with an upper level viewing of fields and courts.

The plan proposes that the existing rugby and squash facilities at Dargaville’s Memorial Park be made available for other sporting uses and that all netball and tennis be relocated back to the park.

There would be in total six dual-use courts for netball and tennis. These include the two existing paved courts receiving a tidy-up, plus two new covered, but not enclosed, courts and two new, possibly sand-based tennis courts.

Sports Northland chief executive, Brent Eastwood said, “the draft report was based on an initial survey of all sport and recreation groups, including interviews carried out in May.” “The initial feedback from those

groups at the presentation was very encouraging and supportive which bodes well for a future partnership between them all, something that is critical for this project to be successful.”

Also proposed is a small covered grandstand for rugby, rugby league and football, four petanque courts for public use and the 60s-Up Club along with a small central playground and possibly a gym.

The report also recommended the development of casual recreation facilities for Selwyn Park with a focus on younger residents and families and includes a new skate park and playground.

The report is expected to be finalised and released to the community in the next few weeks.

Ratepayers meet Commissioners Kaipara ratepayers groups have held a meeting with the Kaipara District Council Commissioners, as part of an ongoing process of consultation with residents and ratepayers across the district The commissioners Terms of Reference include working with the public to determine management of the estimated $80 million debt left by the former council they replaced last month.

“We have acknowledged that there are a number of important issues to be resolved and we will be consulting with as many people as possible as the process goes on,” said commission chair, John Robertson .

“The Kaipara Community Ratepayers Association and the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association were the first of a number of stakeholder groups that we want to meet with and talk to.

“The discussions were free and frank and a good place to start.”

Following the meeting, Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association chairman, Ron Manderson, said KCRA advised the commissioners the rates in the latest LTP are “not affordable for pensioners and others on fixed,

low or reduced farm incomes, and the current rates relief options are woefully inadequate, and council must reduce its operating costs.

Mr Manderson added that if council overheads were not cut to reduce those rates “illegally struck” in the LTP, KCRA may call for further intensification of its declared rates strike.

However, he acknowledged that further meetings with the commissioners are expected and “members will be kept informed.”

Fine-tuning roles at Big River

Big River FM appointed a new chairman of the board at their recent annual general meeting. Mitch King has taken over the role from Jack McKerchar who is now acting station manager following the resignation of Anaru Tana.

Based in Dargaville, the community owned and run radio station which opened 14 years ago has a strong following.

Mr King who has been a resident in Dargaville for most of his life is passionate about Big River and country music, new and old. He has hosted the Country of Fire Show, Saturdays 2 to 6pm for eight years.

“I like to be involved and in contact with people and its nice to receive phone calls with positive feedback when I’m doing the show,” says Mr King.

“We appreciate Jack stepping in to help out until later in the year — he is

kept busy programming and looking after the interns,” adds Mr King.

Board member Phil Godfrey says, “Being a community radio station, it’s good to have a chairman who is wellknown and respected in the community and very approachable. We are very happy to have him.”

Obituary

Dr Philip Middleton Barham Dr Philip Middleton Barham passed away 1 September 2012 aged 84 at his home in Army Bay, Whangaparoa.

Philip was known for his humanity and humility. He had an outstanding career and was truly a doyen of his profession.

Having qualified with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Otago in 1954 and Diploma in Obstetrics from the University of Auckland in 1958, Philip took up a position as medical practitioner in Dargaville in 1962.

He served Dargaville and the surrounding district as general practitioner for nineteen years and developed a reputation in the community for his caring manner as a doctor.

During this time he also established the first regular Flying Doctor Service in New Zealand responding to emergency call-outs in his single engine plane, visiting patients in outlying clinics and sometimes transporting patients to hospital.

The idea was born out of increasing difficulties in reaching outlying patients quickly over dangerous roads. Philip had learnt to fly while at Otago University and in 1964 after much research and several trips to Australia, to learn from their flying doctor service, the service was launched.

When, in 1978, Philip was offered an appointment as Foundation Director of the Goodfellow Unit at the University of Auckland medical school, he initially declined the position.

“He was reluctant to leave Dargaville, but after encouragement from friends and colleagues, he finally agreed,” says lifetime friend, Des Subritzky.

As director of the Foundation for continuing education in family medicine his work was outstanding. He carried out research into educational needs and

Defence Careers Experience for Dargaville High School students Recently Theo Mullinder, Malcolm Ramsay, Michael Hutchins and Maddison Fox completed a Defence Careers Experience weekend at Tamaki Leadership Camp, Whangaparoa. Along with about 50 other secondary school students they participated in a wide range of physical activities and team building events including carrying sandbags, vehicle recovery, confidence course and maize activity (navigating a team through underground tunnels with no lights), running everywhere and learning how to march.

“We learned a lot about all three of the Defence Forces (Army, Airforce and Navy) and the potential career paths within these. We stayed in the barracks, rose at 5am and learned how to have a 30 second shower due to lots of people and short timeframes. The food was fantastic which was great as we were starving after all the hard physical work. Deep Heat turned out to be my best friend since I discovered muscles I did not know I had.

We learned a lot about being “on time” and by the end we were trying to be 5 minutes early to meetings because if we were late we had to hold the press up position for what seemed like hours! “

Malcom is interested in becoming a Field Engineer for the Army and if successful he David Bargh, Principal would be trained as a “Jack of all Trades” covering moving the Army around the battle field, use of explosives and mine detection and demolition, construction, plumbing, water boating, scuba diving and electrical work to name some. Theo is keen to become an Electrical Fitter and in this role he would be maintaining all the electrical equipment in the Army such as fridges and generators. Maddison would love to be a Medic in the Navy, providing first line medical help for soldiers, sailors and civilians. Michael is investigating becoming an Engineering Officer or Avionics Technician in the Airforce.

“Overall we learned lots. Teamwork was of the utmost importance in everything we did — you are only as strong as your weakest link. It gave us a good idea of what the basic Army training would be like and has helped us decide that this is for us — it removed any doubts we had and we are sure now that we want to apply to join the Armed Forces.”

developed a programme of refresher courses, seminars and workshops for practising doctors.

“He was an innovator in devising methods of coping with the multiple problems of general practice,” says colleague and friend, Dr Maurice Matich.

Philip went on to hold many positions during his tenure at Auckland University including, among others, Associate Dean School of Medicine and Member/Chair Postgraduate Medical Committee and in 1988 obtained a Masters degree in Health Personnel Education from the University of NSW. Philip became a source of knowledge and wisdom on postgraduate education.

His opinion and advice was valued by numerous organisations and governmental committees and he was a sought after speaker at conferences both locally and overseas.

“He gave his time and dedication to everything involving medicine and health locally, nationally and internationally,” says friend Des Subritzky.

Philip had a lifelong love of sailing and although he sailed competitively as a student, he mainly cruised in New Zealand waters and parts of the Pacific.

In his later years his main interest was his family, his wife Diana, children Deborah, Stephen, Joanne and David and seven grandchildren.

Trash turns to treasure St John’s, which operates ambulance services out of Mangaturoto to service the eastern Kaipara is on the hunt for hidden treasure — that could just be your trash.

“We are holding our annual trash and treasure auction on October 6, and last year we raised a record $11,500 which all goes to support the volunteers and cadets of the Otamatea area of St Johns,” says auction organiser Albie Paton.

“We are hoping to do so again this year and public support is vital.”

Mr Paton says volunteers are standing by to pickup and store items for the auction, held in the Centennial Hall.

“We are looking for clean and tidy goods, be it furniture, appliances, tools, toys — the list is extensive.

We do ask though that things such as TVs are in working order, because at the end of the day, if they are not, there are no buyers and we have to spend money to dispose of them ourselves.

“So have a look around, and see what you have that doesn’t fit any more. There’ll be someone out there glad to take it over for a new lease of life.”

Tina holds a full time job with Rabobank (which is pressurising and busy in itself) but, after hours she has been tirelessly working towards organising a “White Ribbon Day” on Saturday, 24 November.

As she keeps saying, “there is no money”, but she keeps talking to people, asking for help, phoning those with the power to help or donate or who are well known and if someone says no (and many have said yes).

She just rings or visits someone else. (eg Mike King, Damage which is a band, More FM, Tip Top Ice Cream, Fonterra, Mad Butcher, Cowleys, KDC, the Police and Maori TV etc).

Tina is so passionate about this event; she has spent hours talking to people on the phone and face to face and there will be hundreds of people involved in this day, along with hundreds of motor bikes in our town.

The idea is that it is essentially a “FREE day for the kids” — they can grab a sausage or an ice cream, have a bounce on the bouncy castle or a supervised ride on a bike etc — all for free.

It will bring the issue of domestic violence to our consciousness and the realisation that we all have to take responsibility for not accepting it in our community and having the courage to speak up if we know about it or it is a part of our world.

I know Tina would say this is not about her, it is about the issue of violence, however this event on 24 November is down to her and her making it her business to care enough to do something.

Although she has a “committee” of people working with her, she has been the driving force from the start. I know she would agree to an article about her if it meant this day was promoted.

(Tina’s mob is 027 652 8902) I feel our community has had so much negativity to deal with recently, we need to “find” the Tinas in our community and boast about them and bring some pride back to the Kaipara.

I see no better way to do this than informing the public of the amazing things people like Tina do just by talking to people.

She is living proof that we can all make a difference and make the world a better place.

Local support for National Burns Centre Erik Movling thought it was all over when he was trapped in his burning speedway race car in 2008 after a horror crash at Whangarei speedway. Trapped for over a minute amid the flames, it was a miracle he survived at all After 40 days in an induced coma and three weeks on life support Erik began his long road to rehabilitation at the National Burns Centre — where the dedicated medical staff are credited with saving his life.

Now this state-of-the art care facility has a new tool in helping give back quality of life to patients who have suffered serious burns. Me ana Boss wuz out ona lambin’ beat, an ‘is girfriend Sharlene had packed a cupla sanniches an’ a thermos for mornin’ smoko, ‘cos we were up ina hills ata back ofa farm, an too far ta come back to tha house fer a cuppa, tha Boss reckined..

We was sittin’ up ona ridgeline, ana wind was rufflin’me coat an makin’ tha Boss’s hat flap a bit.

Thena Boss sed ta me: “Ya betta wotch it Dog. You mite getta bill for usin’ tha wind ta smooth outa ya coat.”

Now I hada give tha Boss a bit of The Eye, cos I thort maybe he wuz losin’ it.

He sed: “Now don’t lookit me like that Dog. Doncha know that our mates downa marae is lookin’ at ownin’ tha wind?”

Well, I herd Sharlene readin’ froma noospaper that that John Ki gotta problem wiv sellin’ off tha power kompnies ‘cos tha king of our mates downa marae reckin they owns tha water. That kaused a bitofa stir ina pub, too, akkordin’ ta tha Boss. Tha Boss sed gidday an they started plannin’ wen ta get tha lambs docked. Thay made a cupla remarks about tha weather, thena a wind wot blew Rangi’s Tv earial down.

Evrybody hada good laff then, an a bit later, Boss an’ Pete came out an’ git ina ute. “Betta git home bfore dark, eh Dog, or Sharlene’ll reada riot act. Be better wen it’s daylight savin’ cos she won’t realise we bin so late ata pub.”

New store promises value Astute watchers of the coming and goings on Dargaville’s main street may have noticed something new coming together next door to Randell’s Suzuki in recent weeks With bold new signage and an intriguing range of stock slowly building, the new Dargaville Appliance Centre has attracted considerable attention — and now we can announce that it’s almost ready to open to the public.

Manager Dean Minchin comes from a background in engineering, but his latest venture, supported by Whangarei electricians Electrotrade, promises something new for both himself and for the town.

That’s because all of the gleaming whiteware within — with the exception of a range of Toshiba heat pumps — is either end-of-line stock or has been expertly reconditioned by Electrotrade.

And of course this means big name brands at lower prices, as well as a niche in the local market. Stoves, fridges, freezers, washers and dryers make up the end-of-line (models superseded by their manufacturers, but new) range, next to similar machines by companies like Fisher and Paykel, Samsung and Simpson which have been checked, restored, reconditioned and given a new warranty.

The two and a half kilometre track begins on an unformed paper road at 300 King Road about 10km west of Mangawhai and winds its way up to the Brynderwyn Ridge with stunning views across the Kaipara.

“We think it’s going to be a very popular forest track with beautiful views on the ridge and it’s not too steep — it’s suitable for everyone,” says chairman of the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust, Gordon Hosking.

Mr Hosking says volunteers began work last year and they built the 14 meter long swing bridge in one of the wettest weeks of the year.

“It was quite a lot of trouble getting the materials to the bridge  A five minute walk in, stands an elegant swing bridge built by volunteers in one of the wettest weeks site and it wasn’t very of the year pleasant doing it in the wind and the rain.”
