The Wellington-based customer, who has bought a new house in Auckland, has chosen to use the unique and varied art of Pauline Gough to enhance his new property. The one-time primary school art teacher describes herself as self-taught and says she does not consider what she does as work. “I just love it and I always have — and that’s why it’s not work to me. I have always known I wanted to paint but it wasn’t until my children got older that I had the freedom and time to devote to it.” In her home studio surrounded by dozens of pieces of her work, Pauline says she paints with joy and does it quite quickly. “I may not portray what I paint with massive accuracy and detail and that’s done on purpose — but I paint what I see and feel and people seem to like it and that is validation for me.” Influenced by some of the masters including Monet, Degas and Renoir, Pauline says she is mainly an acrylic painter using thick paints and often uses a palette knife, with an underlying theme of vibrancy and intense colour p Dargaville artist Pauline Gough in her home studio with one of her latest works. across her prolific work output.
