Blacktop Construction Ltd, which had a road resealing contract with Kaipara District Council, went into receivership earlier this month.

Blacktop staff and managers were regular customers at hotels,

motels, cafes and restaurants, charging up accommodation and other costs, but last week’s receivership means these businesses are out of pocket and may never see their money.

One of the most impacted is Dargaville’s Northern Wairoa Hotel, which along with its sister hotel in Maungaturoto, is owed nearly $20,000. Manager Michael Collins says up to 25 Blacktop employees stayed between the end of April to the end of July. continued on page 3 …

Quiet achievers do it again Kauri museum strikes gold A large group of well-wishers gathered at the Otamatea Community Services Centre to celebrate the 10th anniversary and to see the latest addition the facility has added to its already extensive repertoire of services.

A new computer training facility, a joint venture between Te Roroa Learning Assistance in Dargaville, and the Maungaturoto based centre was launched, with Te Roroa Learning Assistance administrator Stephanie Spraggon and tutor Linda Cowbourne on hand to help students start their training.

Centre Manager Denise Meiklejohn says for those seeking often vital employment skills, the nearest training facility is in Whangarei, which is why preemployment computer training became an item on the agency’s strategic plan.

three weeks solid work, we were able to turn it into a great new space for computer training.”

Denise says the second-hand computers were kindly donated by BNZ at Dargaville and Warkworth, and volunteer experts Noel, and Steven Smith donated their time and considerable expertise to set up eight training stations in the new classroom.

“The free, 100 hours of training is comprehensive and we have eight students doing hours on Mondays and Thursdays and eight others doing just one session, depending on what suits them as not everyone can do the same hours each week.”

Denise says the centre is also working on offering computing for seniors and another course concept that is proving very popular with seniors, understanding mobile phones. 

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe has been recognised as one of the country’s leading tourism ventures for environmental performance, achieving the prestigious Qualmark Enviro Gold rating.

Qualmark is the official accreditation standard issued by the tourism industry and the Kauri Museum has been Qualmark endorsed since 2000.

The museum’s chief executive officer Betty Nelley, says achieving the accreditation was a personal goal and she feels very proud.

“Our philosophy around the environment is that we wish to leave the world a better place for our grandchildren. We believe we demonstrate environmental excellence, integrity and best practice, and that belief has been formally endorsed.”

Owned by a charitable trust, the museum is funded entirely by its visitors and is Northland’s largest covered attraction with more than 4,500m2 of display around the Kauri industry. Qualmark General Manager Tim Keeling says any

business receiving a gold rating has to exceed Qualmark’s standards for environmental and social responsibility as well as showing strong leadership and advocacy.

“The Kauri Museum underwent a comprehensive on-site evaluation around areas of waste management, energy efficiency, environmental management and community support, so to achieve this rating is no mean feat — it takes time, dedication and commitment, things the museum has in spades.

“Each of Qualmark’s quality criteria has been developed in collaboration with the tourism industry making it a quality assurance system by the industry, for the industry.”

Qualmark is a not-for-profit service between Tourism New Zealand and the New Zealand Automobile Association for travellers and the tourism industry. 

Book favourites come to life  by Alan Wheatley

Students and staff at Dargaville Primary School assumed some amazing alter-egos for the grand finale of book week, dressing up as their best-loved book characters.

First cab off the rank was an impressive lineup of Room 16 students, led by Mouseketeer teacher Natasha Smith.

This was followed by an equally impressive line up of comic book and historical characters, fairy tale creatures and a good sprinkling of the usual villains and aliens.

Principal Alan Russek said one of the aims of book week is to increase the awareness among students of the joy of reading and to introduce them to the variety of books available.

“Parents and whanau were invited to purchase new books from the display at the school library and then donate them, thus helping increase the library’s choice and range.

Their child’s name is entered inside the cover.”

The week of events was enhanced with visits by children’s author Mark Sommerset, MORE FM breakfast hosts Angela “Flash” Gordon and John Markby and members of the Taniwhas rugby team who met students and read books with them.

There was a steady stream of donors when the NZ Blood Service set up shop at the Dargaville Town Hall.

On hand making his 50th donation, was Ruawai farmer Allan Smith, who has been giving blood for the past 40 years.

“I started donating when I was 17 and just seem to have kept on doing it since, in the Manawatu and for a while over in Hawkes Bay and now here.”

Allan gave the standard 470mm of ‘O’ positive type blood, which nurse Amy Lerke said was the most common.

“Because of that, we constantly need a lot of it. Luckily around 38 per cent of

donors are O positive, but the next most common type is A positive, and we see plenty of those too.”

First time donors must be over 16 and under 65, but regular donors can donate until age 76 providing they have an annual medical check.

The service collects on average around 90 units a day and Dargaville was right on target to deliver its share.

To mark Allan’s 50th donation, the service presented him with a commemorative bag. 

A meeting is to be held in Dargaville on Friday with the aim of setting up a support structure to enable young people in the Kaipara area with various disabilities to better access resources and improve communication.

Organised by Whangarei based primary disability resource centre Northable, the meeting will be hosted

by The Cube, the organisation’s youth wing. All the members of The Cube are themselves disabled.

Client ser vices manager for Northable, Shirley Harvey says the aim of the meeting is to set up a hub in Dargaville to join with others, linking back to the Whangarei centre.

“We have been approached by a lot of Kaipara families who tell us of the lack of services for disabled people and caregivers, so we are holding this meeting to actually hear from the people who need our help the most.”

Ms Harvey says if help can be provided around the needs of the area’s disabled people then the effects can be widespread.

“People will not be so inclined to move away from the area to seek the support they need and we can also reach out to a lot of young disabled people we know sometimes leave school and then simply sit at home with nothing to do.”

She said Northable does not yet know exactly how many people there could be in the area who need support and the meeting’s primary aim will be to find out.

The meeting will be at the Dargaville Town Hall this Friday 20th September from 9.30am to 2.30pm. 

Aspiring Ruawai chef Brad James has been cooking up a storm at one of the country’s most exclusive resorts.

Brad, 18, a Year 13 student at Ruawai College, last month spent a week at Hanmer Springs’ Heritage Hotel working in the hotel’s kitchen.

It all came about through the college’s Gateway Programme which gives senior students a chance to gain experience in occupations they hope to make their careers.

Brad says the college’s Gateway co-ordinator wrote to the hotel which agreed to take him. He worked Monday to Friday from 2pm to 10pm doing preparation and service for dinner, while on the Friday he did breakfast and lunch.

The charitable organisation Linking Hands, based in Maungaturoto has taken delivery of a new shuttle van to further enhance their service and to retire the current longserving vehicle.

Linking Hands is a free community health shuttle run by donations, and covers Maungaturoto, Mangawhai and Ruakaka covering a large part of the rural Kaipara area that has no public transport.

The new vehicle — a 2007 Nissan Caravan — was made possible by many local donations, one of which came from the Maungaturoto & Districts Rotary Club with other funding coming from as far afield as Auckland.

Linking Hands Maungaturoto manager, Jayne King says the new vehicle which also has a wheelchair hoist, replaces the high mileage six year old former van, which she says was well past its projected three year use by date.

“We have five vehicles across our three centres at Maungaturoto, Mangawhai and Ruakaka and the new van means we can continue to ferry clients to health related appointments they would otherwise find hard to meet.”

Hot hatch with extra chilli

When Ford wanted to promote their new Fiesta ST hot hatchback, they could have ordered promotional stickers, t-shirts, or even novelty ballpoint pens.

Instead, the tuned, sharpened and spiced-up version of the popular little Ford was marketed with complimentary bottles of master-crafted hot chilli sauce. A more apt metaphor has rarely been presented — and just looking at the car you get some hint as to why.

Aggressive, slippery surfaces confront you at all angles, from the hex-mesh front grille all the way up a bonnet which has a hint of Aston about it (in the right light) and back to a hatch-top spoiler which, on this car, is more than just fiberglass jewellery.

That the friendly little Fiesta could look so mean is one thing, but the interior is something else again.

Black leather, chrome dials backlit in red, racing seats which grip like those of a fighter plane — one begins to get the impression that Ford's designers may have thought that they were working on the new Mustang, not a diminutively sized hatchback.

One very lucky man!

Former hostel manager looks back

Rodney Wilson’s business is open again after being closed for nearly four months, but he’s lucky to be back on the job.

On Mother’s Day, Rodney says he was cutting firewood on his home bench saw, when he turned around to grab another mill slab, and accidentally brushed the back of his hand over the spinning blade.

“It was quick and it was brutal. Even though there was not a lot of blood, I knew I’d done something pretty bad. I went up to the medical centre and they anaesthetised my hand, gave me painkillers, bandaged it up, and then I drove to Whangarei.”

Five hours of microsurgery at Whangarei hospital followed, reattaching severed tendons and resetting fractured bones, and his left hand was back together, but  Rodney Wilson of Dargaville Diesel Rodney said it was far from good.

“It was in a cast for ten days and of eventually having full use of his hand really sore. Four months later, I still only will be accurate.

“I’ve been cutting firewood for 20 have about 50 per cent use of it, but I years and never had any problem, but it am glad to have five fingers still.”

A former manager of Dargaville High School’s student hostel is disappointed it is closing but says she understands why.

“It is a sign of the times,” says Sharon Hunter who was hostel manager from 1991 to 1997. “I understand why. But the closure means the hostel is no longer an option that is available to kids in the region.”

When Mrs Hunter managed the hostel it had 30-plus kids in residence during the week. The hostel currently has just six residents and is no longer financially viable.

When she became manager Mrs Hunter was the first ex-teacher in that role. “My job was to feed and house the kids and make sure they did their study. I ran the place like my own home. Parents were giving me their most precious possession — their children. I was responsible and I took my responsibility seriously.”

More leaders needed for St John St John is calling for more leaders to help run its activities for its Maungaturoto youth division.

Maungaturoto divisional manager Jodie Horsford said they currently had three leaders but desperately need another two.

She says St John in Maungaturoto operates four groups that meet weekly.

The first group is the Penguins for youngsters aged from six to eight. The kids do hobbies and learn about healthy living and basic first aid. The Penguins are followed by Green, Blue and Gold groups for older age brackets.

Ms Horsford says youngsters and teens in St John learn essential life skills and make new friends. They undertake many activities including

going on camps. But to that they need guidance from adult leaders.

“We want people who are passionate for youth and the community.

They need to know how to interact with kids.”

Potential leaders should not be put off if they feel they do not know it all.

“We can put them on a leadership development course. They can do a first aid course. And we provide support and assistance, especially with programme planning.”

However most students respected Mrs Hunter’s firm leadership. “My hours were from 7am to 7pm. At 7pm I went off duty and went home to one of the school houses. It was a five-day hostel, so I always had my weekends free. It was an amazing lifestyle.”

Mrs Hunter says good food was important. “I had amazing cooks and I helped with the menus. At the time I had two teenagers and I knew what they ate. Hostels run on their food and if you give the students — especially the boys — good food you keep them happy.”

Mrs Hunter’s time as manager ended when she and her husband bought a farm just outside Dargaville and she returned to teaching. But she has no regrets about her time as hostel manager. “I had some amazing times and met kids who have become lifelong friends.”

SPACE — Supporting Parents Alongside Children’s Education — has run in Whangarei for the last 10 years. “We’ve tried to get it to Kaipara for a long time. We’ve finally succeeded,” says SPACE co-ordinator Wendy Kain.

Ms Kain says the programme is set to begin at Dargaville Playcentre on Ranfurly Rd at 10am on Tuesday October 15.

“SPACE is a programme for firsttime parents — not just mums. It’s more of an adult programme focussing

on education and learning about your child’s development.” She says the programme has at least 30 sessions held every Tuesday morning. “We set a topic and then we make arts and crafts related to that. Sometimes we have a specialist guest speaker.”

She says SPACE is limited to 15 babies and is filling up fast. Bookings are essential.
