p The last Friday of August heralded the beginning of spring in more ways than one. With daffodils blooming all over, it was time to gather together to raise money for a very worthy cause; the New Zealand Cancer Society’s annual appeal. ANZ Bank held its popular yearly raffle with support from the business community, while collectors handed out daffodil pins and rattled the cans for donations. A barbecue and cake stall helped boost the coffers with some fine cooking and baking by local ‘good sorts’ on the grill and behind the sweet treats.

Around one in 10 Northland children and one in four teenagers haven’t had a vaccination and there is now an outreach service for homes as well as schools.

Medical centres in Kaipara all offer Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations while there is also a free drop-in clinic on Commerce St in Whangarei between 8.30am to 4pm on Tuesday and Thursday. No appointment is needed.

“Northland immunisation service focus is ensuring equity,“ said DHB service manager, Kathryn Bowmar.

“The outreach service is focussed on supporting families and whanau that have difficulty accessing healthcare to access vaccinations.”

Many people living in Northland regularly travel to Auckland, which means their chances of being exposed are high.

“Vaccination is our best protection,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr Catherine Jackson.

It has been estimated to prevent recurrent outbreaks of measles, 90

per cent of the population must be immune. To reach this level, 95 per cent of people must have had at least one MMR vaccination.

Northland’s immunisation rate is a concern because it is not high enough to limit the spread of measles from person to person and the impending school holidays and the added challenge of several large inter-school competitions happening during the next week or two increases the risk of more cases.

Travelling and large gatherings are an ideal virus breeding ground. “Individuals or their family members, who have symptoms suggestive of measles should immediately seek advice from a doctor, and avoid contact with young children.

However, it is recommended that they call their doctor instead of visiting them to allow them to make arrangements to assess you safely and without infecting others.”

“If you are found to be in contact with a case of measles (and not immune) you will need to stay away from work, school or public places for up to 14 days, to help prevent putting other people at risk.”

The proposed Auckland landfill for the Dome Valley and perceived pollution danger to the wider Kaipara Harbour has become an Auckland mayoral election issue.

Fight the Tip member, Michelle Carmichael, and supporters took their campaign to candidates’ meetings to gather support against the plan, which is currently awaiting resource consent..

It is feared the tip poses a huge danger of pollution to the harbour and immediate environment.

At a Wellsford meeting, Michelle addressed candidates.

“The two mayoralty candidates, Craig Lord and p Michelle Carmichael addressed a Wellsford Peter Vaughan, declared candidates’ meeting landfills, are outdated and confirmed that if elected they’d stop international companies keen to build the Dome Valley landfill and propose such a plant. a waste-to-energy plant,” she said.

Libby Jones — Northland District Health Board Libby Jones, a current director on the Northland District Health Board, is standing for re-election. She is appointed Chair of the Community, Public Health and Disability Advisory Committee of Northland DHB. Libby Jones lives near Paparoa with her husband Pete Hames, where they are active community members. She is also the manager of Jigsaw North Family Services working with children and families. The health board role aligns well with her social services work and her passion for people and improving their lives.

For 30 years Libby has worked in health and social services in clinical, leadership and funding roles, and has 18 years’ sound governance experience in roles including school boards of trustees, Rural Support Trust, Volunteering Northland, Sport Northland, Paparoa Medical Society and Kaipara District Council. Her rural background, her ability to be a team player and her willingness to become informed ensures she brings a broad perspective to board decision-making.

She sees working together more effectively within the health sector, and with other agencies as critical to improving our region’s health, and to reduce inequalities. Libby believes the

focus needs to be on the prevention of ill health and promoting primary health care close to home to find the balance between limited funds and increasing demand.

On September 20, a powerful message promoting stronger families and an end to violence in the whanau will be shouted loud by a combined group of community-minded organisations in Dargaville, as varied as schools, kaumatua, churches and kids themselves.

Voices of Tamariki Everywhere is the name of a music and dance event for the whole family, with a message of hope for both young people and their parents. The aim, according to passionate event organiser Dianna (Waima) King, is to celebrate the power of family, and the importance of caring relationships in growing today’s kids into tomorrow’s adults.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Lucky locals will have the chance to walk among the habitat of wild kiwi this weekend, as the Department of Conservation hosts a nocturnal walk into their ‘back yard’, hoping to hear their calls in the spring night.

Kauri planting ends for year The future of the kauri tree in the Kaipara has had a ‘shot in the arm’ recently with the Kauri Regeneration Programme undertaken by The Kauri Museum with the aid of schools and the wider community.

“We have all but finished planting for the 2019 season and we are pleased to report that in the last three months over 120 kauri have been planted in the Kaipara District,” said the museum’s Kay McElvie.

“We are extremely grateful to the Chapman family who donated 20 trees to the project and joined us for the planting. The family has promised to donate 20 trees a year for the next 10 years.

“We also acknowledge the Friends of the Museum donation of $500 and the many people who have bought a tree from the shop for planting on public land. These donations have enabled us to distribute trees to all the local primary schools, the Paparoa and Maungaturoto walkways and the

new walkway alongside the Matakohe bridges. NZTA also planted several large specimens at the museum turnoff from SH16.

“We are now working on establishing future public sites, including, we hope some council land, and sourcing more trees, so that when Arbor Day 2020 comes along we will be ready to go. If you would like to donate to this scheme please, either pop into the museum shop, or email events@kaurimuseum. com.”

This Sunday saw a full technical and dress rehearsal of the forthcoming Dargaville Wearable Arts extravaganza, as behind closed doors at the Dargaville Town Hall the digital projectors were fired up, the models donned their makeup, and the final touches were added to a dazzling array of artworks.

Sitting in the darkened auditorium — the tension and excitement were palpable. The first impression, of an otherworldly, neon-lit forest replacing the hall’s stage, was quickly eclipsed as the music began to play and the hall was painted with moving patterns and colours, thanks to the live ‘video DJ’ skills of visual artists AwhiWorld.

The second impression was delivered by the wearable artworks themselves, and while to describe any of these creations in detail might spoil the surprise for this Friday’s opening night, let it suffice to say that our creative locals have outdone themselves.

From the very young (including kindergarten students) through to seasoned veterans in the field, each artist has struck that engaging balance between imagination and practical application. You can appreciate the sheer scale of crafting such artworks from a technical viewpoint, or revel in the colour, light and riotous creativity on display.

Equally, it’s amazing to see it all brought to life by a team of models who take on the challenge of the wild, the weird (and some towering platform

Ratepayers like to know simple truths from their prospective councillors — I don’t see any point in fence-sitting.

The Otamatea ward has generated more than $200,000 in reserve contributions from development. Only half of this has been spent back in Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Tinopai.

The Dargaville-dominated council where little development occurs has been busy spending up while Otamatea does not receive its share. If elected, I will ensure that it is spent where it should offset the effects of growth.

Climate change? Seems to be a frequently asked question of candidates. Here’s my take. I will not be supporting any so-called climate emergency when there isn’t one. The empirical evidence does not support the hysteria. New Zealand, as a whole, is the most efficient farming nation in the world. Our farmers, particularly in the North, have enough hurdles without the added burden of being penalised for being our most productive sector.

Roading. Have an approach where every year a realistic target for new seal is progressed. Tourism. The economic benefits to our district are ongoing and can be further developed to provide high value with low environmental impact. I ask for support to construct

a coast to coast cycle/tourist trail from Mangawhai through to Matakohe and Ruawai. I have experienced the Otago Rail Trail and The Opua to Horeke Trail, which has increased exponentially the revenue in these more off-thetrack locations and we will reap the same benefits.

We are weighed down by bureaucracy.

For example, currently, KDC is going ahead with spending seven million dollars for the next district plan. We could have reviewed and rolled over the previous five million dollar plan for a fraction of this cost.

This plan like the last will further add rule upon rule, which will only be of benefit to those that wrote them, lawyers and consultants. A plan should be a simple document we can all read, and understand. Your choice is simple.

Support the failed history of former councillors and staff or a councillor who does not accept the status quo.

I will take a no-nonsense, practical and effective approach to support and further the interests of ratepayers and residents of the Otamatea Ward.

Upgrading septic standards If you live in the country, coastal area or a small rural town, your household effluent including toilet, shower, kitchen and laundry wastewater, probably drains into an on-site treatment system, and from there into the ground somewhere in your backyard.

The standard on-site household effluent system has two parts — treatment and disposal. Treatment systems commonly used for household effluent include septic tanks and a group of treatment plants known as Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS).

Treatment plants that use sand and textile filters to provide advanced treatment of effluent are also becoming increasingly popular.

When the effluent leaves a treatment system, it is only partially treated. Final treatment is carried out by the bacteria that are in the soil below the effluent disposal system. The main purpose of the disposal system is to keep the effluent in the soil within the disposal area, so this final treatment happens.

A variety of disposal systems are available, with each being designed to suit different site conditions and

soil types. The correct operation and continued maintenance of your on-site system are very important. If neglected, it can pollute groundwater and streams, puts you and your neighbours’ health at risk, and these issues can be expensive to fix.

Information is available on your local council website outlining the way the various systems work, what is required to keep them operating effectively, and how to look after your effluent treatment and disposal system.

Guidelines on what is required to keep them operating effectively can also be

found. Information is available on topics such as discharges to land and water, on-site domestic wastewater discharges, wastewater network and treatment plant discharges, production land discharges, stormwater discharges, industrial and trade wastewater discharges. Each council has its own rules and guidelines, and it is important to note that you must ensure your septic system meets the requirements specific for the region it is in. Each district council may have their own bylaws regarding on-site sewage systems and property owners need to be aware of these requirements. ¢

With Auckland’s home show over and the home show in Whangarei just days away, companies who specialise in technology for the home are proud to present their latest and greatest and while we’re still waiting for robotic servants and flying cars, technology to make the home more comfortable is coming down in price.

The theme of 2019 seems to be connectivity, and it’s happening in different ways. First off the rank is ducted air conditioning, once the preserve of commercial premises and the super-rich, but now more than within the grasp of the average homeowner.

Dargaville’s long-established name in both concrete and Skyline buildings is set to carry on into a new generation from September.

Owners with 40 years of experience in the industry, John and Annette Vuletich, proudly sell the Skyline Buildings division of his business to their son Jeromey and his wife, Nicole.

It’s a milestone, which the family and the businesses involved are pleased to announce, bringing to culmination a long-term plan that has seen Jeromey take up a managerial role in the Skyline construction aspect of this well-respected company. Light and bright is the colour palette being selected by top interior designers for the year ahead as we emerge from the winter doldrums of spirit and look to a brighter future on the homefront.

We say there is nothing new under the sun, and 2020 will certainly see that old decor standby reappearing.

Anyway, Boss had changed tack about rain an’ was lambastin’ (good werd I leaned from Sharlene) the govinment about water.

Enter Jia Sixie, an ambitious official in the equivalent to our modern department of agriculture, Jia wrote about a plan to use a specialist tool to break up the clods of earth disrupted by ploughing, creating a finer tilth layer, preventing the growth of weeds and the spread of insect pests. The first such advancement in Europe was brought to England by William the Conqueror with his French knights in 1066. So important was the harrow to improved farming (which, of course, fed and paid for more knights) that it’s depicted in the

Bayeux tapestry, alongside the battle of Hastings itself.

Following this came the spring-tine harrow, developed by the Germans in the 1600s. Its creator, by the surname of Ecker, was granted a title and coat of arms for his innovation, which took the concept of a horse-drawn harrow further than the mesh of wooden staves and metal claws, or chains with spikes that had come before. Still, the aim was to follow after the plough, breaking up large lumps of heavy earth into a peasized, less dense consistency to make

a perfect seedbed. These bigger, heavier harrows also covered up seed after sowing and could be used to roughly disrupt weed growth, giving seed a better chance.

Mighty disc harrows, larger again, were used in the plains of the early United States to break-in previously unfarmed land. However, it’s thought that their overuse in soils unsuitable for western-style farming may have contributed to the dust bowl disaster

so vividly written about in The Grapes of Wrath.

With the advent of the tractor and hydraulic power, the modern harrow was born, incorporating several sets of independently turning tines. Since the 1960s, the use of this kind of harrow has exploded. It comes with the benefit of not turning over the layers of soil but keeping them stratiated, thus keeping dormant weed and pest seeds from competing with precision-sown crops. ¢
