u The sight of a construction crane on the skyline is often said to be synonymous with progress. So the appearance of this immense self-propelled crane in Dargaville last Wednesday was cause for much speculation. The big piece of hardware was deployed to safely tackle the removal of part of a disused storage facility on Edward Street, which had suffered structural damage and was visibly skewed. Giant cranes such as this one have a gentle touch when in the hands of a skilled operator, despite their bulk.

p Last Saturday morning saw a large number of people turn out in high-viz vests to help with a major roadside rubbish clean-up on the west coast. The initiative came from the Walking Group of Community Connections, a subgroup of the Baylys Beach Society, and appealed to locals to help with New Zealand’s National Clean Up Week. The amount of rubbish collected filled close to 100 black garbage bags. “It is no longer OK to just chuck your garbage out the car window,” said BBS Chair Cheryl Carmichael. “It’s time surely to own your waste and dispose of rubbish appropriately.”

The organisers thank the Kaipara District Council, Sharky’s, Probation Services, NZMCA and Broad Spectrum for the truck, cones and signs to help ensure everyone’s safety.

Repairs have begun to Mangawhai’s Tomarata/Insley Street Bridge, which is failing due to the corrosion of concrete and damaged reinforcing steel, with four support beams under the bridge in need of replacement.

After seven years administering the financial fallout from the illstarred Mangawhai Wastewater scheme for the Kaipara District Council, Crown Manager and former Commissioner, Peter Winder, will step down from council at the local body elections on October 12.

Kaipara District Council infrastructure manager, Jim Sephton, said council is working to minimise disruption during repairs.

“We understand the repairs will be inconvenient for some people, and we appreciate their understanding and patience.

We’d prefer that visitors coming to Mangawhai from out of town use the Kaiwaka turn-off to avoid the bridge.

The work could continue until March 2020 depending on how much corrosion is found internally in the structure, and the work team was dealing with constraints.

All roads led to The Kauri Museum last Saturday with free entry for families to the annual Settlers Day celebration of all things pioneering where the collection became ‘alive’.

“Settlers Day this year has, once again, celebrated our community and our living cultural heritage. Thank you to everyone who shared the day with us,” said general manager and curator, Dr Tracey Wedge.

Alongside the static museum displays was a small army of friends and volunteers dressing suitably for an early settlers background, as they shared the skills of yesteryear such as butter making, billy-tea brewing rope making, and any number of 19th century homemaking skills. “The Kauri Museum opens its doors,for everyone to not only

to learn about our past, but to see how stories about our collections connect us to our present and help shape our future” said Dr Wedge.

Typical of reactions was that of the Miles family from Whangarei.

“A first time visit for us, but we are going to make several more trips to Matakohe. There was so much to see and do that we missed things like the gum room, and the boarding house.

It’s a wonderful museum and honestly, we didn’t realise it was just an hours drive away. We’ll be back for certain.” ¢

Quiz to keep rescuers flying Ruawai’s Lions Club is pitching in to help the Northland Rescue Helicopter once again, as part of a campaign, which has already seen them raise funds for the rescue heroes and assist in constructing a helipad for emergency flights to Ruawai.

This time they have planned a fun quiz night at the local sports club, inviting both residents and those from further afield to test their mental agility against the twisted trivia of quiz master James Nyssen. Fans of shows like The Chase will have their chance to prove their powers, says Lions Club president Rosemary Webb.

“Our aim is not only to have fun but to focus on raising money for the very important rescue helicopter service and on bringing the Ruawai community together for something positive,” she says.

The Ruawai Lions’ first quiz night, in 2016, was a definitive success.

Rosemary also challenges folks from

Dargaville to come and give it a try in the name of inter-town pride.

There will be a swag of prizes on offer, from the serious to the silly, across categories spanning the brainiest team (maximum team size is four) through to the best theme costumes and the most laughable wrong answer. Questions will be suitable for all ages, and there are bar facilities for refreshments available.

It all kicks off at 7.30pm on Friday, October 18.

A Kaipara-based men’s field hockey team contested the Powell Cup as part of a double-header tournament in Kensington, Whangarei recently.

The first time an all-male squad have represented the area for decades, despite being firsttimers, they managed to win the coveted trophy.

The Powell Cup saw a clash between the major hockey organisations of the mid-north. First up, the Kaipara men strategised a strong attack against the Bay of Islands, sending three goals into the next off the sticks of forwards Kyus and Kelvin. That was enough to seal the deal, and the team went on to match forces with the Northland hockey association team, putting up a spirited defence to hold them to a draw. As a result, it was enough to win the tourney on points, when the goals were counted back, and the team, some of whom had never played a ‘real’ competitive match, raised the cup in victory.

Wastewater survey for Paparoa

A survey of Paparoa residential and commercial properties carried out by the Kaipara District Council has found shortcomings in 50 percent of those inspected, causing contamination of owner’s and neighbouring properties and also the Paparoa River.

Despite seemingly incessant rainy days, Kaipara District Council says, in fact, low rainfall during winter has resulted in lowering groundwater levels and early predictions are for continued lower than average rainfall for the early part of the summer.

A meeting has now been held in the community to form a Paparoa Wastewater Action Group which with council will explore solutions to the problem, beginning next month with a comprehensive survey in the ‘village in the valley’.

Long-standing volunteer and Coast Guard radio operator Dorothy Quaife has at last formally retired after many years of public service; it was an emotional farewell at Coastguard North Kaipara’s meeting on October 2.

Dorothy knew everyone on the water and could recognise voices without needing call-signs,” says Coast Guard secretary James Foster. “Grateful boaties would frequently deliver fish at her door.”

Dorothy started taking radio calls from her own home in 1969, with limited technology. She quickly became known as ‘the voice of the North Kaipara Harbour’. In 1993, when the local Coastguard North Kaipara unit was founded, Dorothy continued her role. This equates to a half-century of service to p Coastguard North Kaipara president Peter Flood presents a farewell bouquet to long-serving volunteer Dorothy Quaife maritime safety. When asked to recall her best moments from together in Auckland. Coastguard now those years, she simply replied, “Every manages communications on the Kaipara Harbour (channels 61 and day! To help them win a nationwide recycling challenge, Dargaville Intermediate School students are asking local residents to hand over any brand of used toothpaste tubes, non-electric toothbrushes, floss containers and packaging.

Run by Colgate and global recycling pioneers TerraCycle, the Colgate Community Garden Challenge invites all schools nationwide to register, collect and ship all oral care waste to TerraCycle, who have the technology to turn it into new products.

The competition encourages schools to learn about sustainability by seeing how waste can be given a second life and made into a new product such as a garden bed. Two such garden beds, able to provide for the school’s culinary classes, will be given away, along with the means to fill the garden beds with veggies.

Diane Papworth from Dargaville Intermediate School said that the recycling challenge had encouraged students to get the wider community involved.

“We encourage students to recycle at school and home,” she said.

“Our school’s recycling initiatives are advertised on posters throughout the community and promoted within the school newsletter.”

Taking on a theatrical double Rehearsals are well advanced for a duo of related plays being staged this season by the Dargaville Little Theatre; after two decades away from the director’s chair, Roxanna Kelly has stepped up to bring productions of John Godber’s satirical comedies Bouncers and Shakers to the local stage.

Last Thursday saw the opening of an interestingly spring-themed exhibition at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery. Seed is the name and the inspiration for a series of interconnected works in photography, ceramics and painting, exploring this facet of nature from three perspectives.

The photographic artist of the trio, Josie Gritten, originally hails from Wales, but now focusses her camera on Kiwi scenes. “I am finding, more and more, that my work reflects my joy of storytelling, lives, loves, raw, heartfelt moments, these are what I draw out — these are what create the glorious wonderment of our lives.”

Painter and printmaker Lynn Middleton returns to the gallery with a series of whimsical, nature-inspired botanical images, following close on the success of her part in the Seven Impressions exhibition in August. The prolific creator bridges the gap between the realism of

photography and the abstract shapes and forms of the ceramic component of Seed with sketches evoking the exuberance of the season.

A fellow contributor to Seven Impressions, Nicola Everett works in many media, including woodcuts, painting and ceramics.

For Seed, she has looked deep into the forms, which have been evolved by the plant kingdom to ensure fertility and growth, then crafted these shapes in ceramic.

The Seed exhibition is open to the public at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery through until October 15. ¢

Construction has been swift despite the exacting demands of creating a specialist hub for these emergency first responders. The new site, near the burgeoning Mangawhai Activity Zone with its recreational facilities, places the firefighters centrally to both the heads and the village sections of Mangawhai, and close to new planned developments recently announced. It’s a credit to the skill of local tradespeople that many of them have been key contributors to this unique project.

Community contributions have assisted in adding to what has been a project funded and overseen by Fire and Emergency New Zealand. A ‘fire brick’ fundraiser has seen a wall of local names incorporated into the design,

acknowledging the strong support the brigade enjoys in their community. It was only one of many fundraising initiatives organised by the proactive Friends of the Brigade.

A ‘ribbon-cutting’ date of October 31 has been set, with a move from the current station in Wood Street to follow.

With new premises comes a renewed need, as in other fire brigades around the region, for volunteers to step up and assist.

It has often been said that all the resources of our local firefighters are only as good as the team behind them; this may be the perfect opportunity for Mangawhai residents who are willing and able to contribute to a very well respected team indeed. ¢

Breast Cancer AWARENESS MONTH

October is pink ribbon appeal month, one of the most noticeable street appeals for any awareness campaign thanks both to its bright and visible hue and also because of the sheer impact of the cause. Breast cancer is the number one form of cancer affecting New Zealand women, and helping those who are battling this disease is just as important as educating the public in prevention and working in the lab for a cure.

This year, the pink ribbon street appeal is on October 11 and 12.

There are many ways to get involved here in the Kaipara; pop a coin in the bucket when the collector calls, visit breastcancerfoundation.org.nz/donate to make an online contribution, or support one of our local retailers who are running pink themed promotions for the cause. An example is Godfrey’s Chainsaws and Mowers, where the team are raffling off a pink lawnmaster mower, with all proceeds going to the appeal.

The Breast Cancer foundation is a not

for profit charity, so it’s generosity like this which keeps them out there and able to work in the community.

The figures tell the tale of why it’s important to get behind this message.

There are nine women diagnosed with breast cancer every day in New Zealand.

Nine families who will have to cope with big changes to their lives; luckily they have the support of organisations such as Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, who provide counselling and practical rehabilitation as part of their mission. This equates to 3,300 women

diagnosed each year, and 25 men as well (men can suffer from breast cancer, as similar tissues exist in men, but are dormant due to the male testosterone/ oestrogen balance).

Early detection is the best defense.

Since a programme of mammograms for women was instigated in this country, deaths from breast cancer are down 27

percent. That’s a great result, but it’s only as good as the continued programmes of education and awareness supported by events like pink ribbon day. Despite the success of mammograms in detecting cancers early, and the success of doctors in removing such early-stage cancers, 30 percent of eligible women are still not part of the programme.

Modern mammogram scans can detect breast cancer when it’s only the size of the head of a pin; 2 millimetres.

There’s a 92 percent chance that if you are diagnosed via a mammogram, you’ll beat breast cancer. So it’s great news that the mobile clinic will be in Dargaville from October 14 to help.

Of course, part of the money raised on pink ribbon days goes toward the ultimate search for a cure. This has been the case since 2008, and this year alone three major studies have been assisted by the Breast Cancer Foundation here in New Zealand.

Around the world, medical science continues to push forward with new ways to eradicate breast cancer; news out of England just yesterday reveals that doctors there have succeeded in experiments with a drug that causes cancer cells to respond better to chemotherapy. Other advances, such as more precise surgical procedures using semi-AI computer enhanced tools, also push the boundaries of what can be achieved. But once again, these developments are only useful if breast cancer is detected early.

For those who have successfully come through a breast cancer diagnosis, there are many ongoing support factors available. In some cases, this just means

With just a touch above 11 weeks until the big day, we take a new look at a classic carol and see what’s necessary before Christmas holidays strike.

On the twelfth week before Christmas, my true love gave to me; the revelation that it’s actually only 11 weeks and one day until Santa arrives! More importantly, it’s time to get a WOF on the boat trailer because on the eleventh week before Christmas we’ll get a letter from 11 relatives a-visiting, who know we live in the sunny north and want to camp on the lawn for the holidays.

Then, in a fortnight there’ll be news of 10 snapper leaping in the harbour, so to go with that trailer WOF it’s not a bad idea to give the old fishing rods a spruce up at the outdoors shop, and check the life jackets and beacon too.

Hard on the heels of that come the nine plastic skeletons of Halloween, because no matter how much we say it’s ‘not a Kiwi holiday’ the kids still want candy and a chance to dress up.

Forget a lie-in afterwards, as the sunny weather after all this rain will guarantee eight mowers mowing at an hour not conducive to the world cup finals.

Best get our own serviced and ready to make a backyard cricket pitch for when the 11 rellies arrive. November

will definitely see the arrival of seven tradies working, as I booked them well in advance to avoid disappointment. That will avoid the six housemates screaming when we run out of hot water due to the 11 rellies popping in, as the new califont and backup solar water heater will be in. Sorted!

Then there are five rive inappropriate jumpers to post to the friends and family overseas, not to mention the four bottles of navy rum to buy for granny’s infamous Christmas fruit cake.

Better sort those ahead of time, along with the three kids’ gifts on lay-by.

When I was a kid we were lucky to get a cardboard box, now it’s a Playstation, a 50cc motocross bike and a new laptop!

With all these ticked off, it’s time to book two tickets to somewhere quiet while the 11 rellies, five of those six housemates (including the three kids) and the eight neighbours with their mowers plan noisy New Years hijinks, probably inviting the seven tradies as well.

That will leave me and the ‘better half’ with one sorted Christmas, and no sign of either a non-native partridge or an unseasonal pear tree in sight! ¢
