p The Kaipara Harbour entrance to the Port Albert channel is greeted with this colourful display as this keen fisherman heads out to sea with the hopes of catching a big one. This spectacular natural show was captured after a supermoon and on a king tide. A supermoon occurs when a full moon is at its closest point to the earth. This often coincides with higher than usual tides.

New Zealand has farewelled another leading light of the arts world with the death of Kaipara painter Bev Taylor, at Warkworth.

Mr Taylor’s work hangs in galleries the length of the country and around the world and he was regarded as one of the leading representational artists of his time. He was Patron of Mangawhai Artists Incorporated and an enthusiastic art educator, passing on his skills and knowledge in classes. His works were exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts, The Institute of Royal Oil Painters, and The Kings Gallery — St James, London. Self-taught, Bev was born in 1936 in Wiltshire, England and immigrated to New Zealand in 1972 with his wife

Before moving to Warkworth, the couple lived at their Kaiwaka property where he had his studio/ gallery on a small block of land which they called Puketotara. “Bev was a husband, father and grandfather and he was a real inspiration and a fantastic teacher who was very generous with his time. “He could not have been as successful as he was without the support of Glen, together they were a real team,” said friend and former art student Donna Shadick. Ashford, both received oil painting lessons from Bev. “He was incredibly talented and really wanted to teach people about art and how to paint. “He was very passionate about it and was always willing to pass on information he had gleaned over the years. “He gave his students the confidence to paint with oils. His passion and love for art was all encompassing” says Donna. He gave students pointers yet didn’t influence their style. … continued on page 6
