Kaipara mayor Craig Jepson and elected members of the council will meet with Dargaville’s business leadership this week to discuss progress, prosperity and the needs of the commercial community.

Kaipara sausages have come out on top, in a competition to find the best bangers produced by Kiwi butchers.

Dargaville has long been without a cohesive and widely supported business association, so this function, facilitated by the Dargaville Community Development Board, provides a forum for information to flow both ways.

The mayor will present the KDC’s plans, but he and his colleagues in governance are also there to listen. All members of the local business community are invited to take part.

OBITUARY

Pahi and Ruawai identity Barry Gordon Mockett u by Paul Campbell

Always known as ‘Mock’, Barry passed away suddenly while at work and was farewelled at the Matakohe Memorial Hall as mourners remembered a man who, for 40 years, ran Ruawai Transport and always lived vibrantly for family and friends and sojourns on the Kaipara Harbour.

After marriage in 1977, Barry and his wife Sue’s company, Ruawai Transport, became their life for 40 years, as they raised two daughters and developed their love of boating on the Kaipara. Family holidays on their launches, fishing and duck shooting, were favourite pastimes.

The fire brigade was also a big part of Barry’s life, and he was awarded his gold star after 25 years of service. The family made their home in Ruawai until moving to Pahi and commuting to work.

The Mockett family got involved in the boating club and community of Pahi. In 2018 Ruawai Transport was sold, and Barry and Sue bought a holiday home on the east coast. In retirement, Barry continued to drive for Hubands Quarry as a valued member of this team and, for the next few years with Sue, did a lot

In what is planned to become an annual tradition, the Northern Wairoa Golf Club at Baylys Beach will host a charity tournament this November to benefit Northland’s rescue helicopter.

of travelling within New Zealand and overseas, recently spending seven weeks in Australia in a campervan.

‘Over the last few days, a lot of memories have been shared and how much of an impact Barry has had on so many lives,’ read his eulogy. ‘He was a father figure, a mentor, a guy that wanted to give everyone a chance. As a husband, he was the absolute best, the love of Sue’s life. Married for 46 years, they were a great partnership, achieving so much together in business, community and their family.’

Barry is survived by Sue and daughters Mindy and Leah, their husbands Mike Haldane and Brad Greenall and grandchildren Billy, Adam, Jake and Jack. ¢

“It’s such a vital service, especially considering how rural we are,” says event co-organiser Hannah Harding.

“That’s why we wanted to make this event something everyone involved could be proud of.”

Last year, a similar tournament event raised $21,000 to help keep the rescue choppers flying, and this year, the golfing community are enthusiastic to show their appreciation. There are 100 places available for contestants to take to the fairways and greens, with the majority pre-sold. Hannah says there are additional tickets available for nonplayers who can enjoy the same evening meal, keynote presentations from rescue pilots and a wine tasting afternoon.

“Last year, we were simply packed.

This time around, we have two of the

chopper pilots as both guest speakers and contestants in the golf tournament, along with rescue helicopter ambassadors Chris Biddles and Chris Fife, who will also host a charity raffle,” says Ms Harding.

On November 24, golfers will tee off at the seaside course, not just for trophies and bragging rights, but to support a service which has saved the lives of friends and relatives, neighbours and workmates for many Kaipara locals. Two years of success in a row will cement this as a west coast tradition.

“We are trying to make this an annual thing, and one which people mark on their calendars,” says Hannah.

“I have been in the Lions for 15–16 years, and we have done this Christmas raffle for many years. It is good fun, and the funds raised go towards young people in the area,” said DLC treasurer Steve Smith.

The Kaipara District Council’s decision to stop carbon emission accounting and end the development of Kaipara’s climate change policy faced stiff opposition in an open forum last week.

“Te Roroa is receptive to having further dialogue if the council is open to reviewing its attitude and stance,” concluded Mr Hohaia, leaving the door open for reconciliation and talks.

This decision means that the Department of Internal Affairs will not approve amended plans for the town hall rebuild. The council meeting of October 25 saw two options put forward.

Councillor Pera Paniora suggested a diplomatic solution, and an attempt to engage with iwi in good faith. This option could have resulted in funding for the Dargaville Town Hall rebuild being retained.

“I recommend that the KDC reapproaches iwi for approval, while working through the issues identified, and then consider submitting the application once approval has been sought,” moved councillor Paniora, as an official amendment.

“I think that it’s important that we do everything we can to repair our relationship with local iwi,” said councillor Eryn Wilson-Collins. The amendment was quashed, however, as the council rejected

attempting to mend relations on what was described as a very tight timescale.

The DIA would require approval and a fully costed and completed amendment

by Tuesday, October 31.

Instead, councillor Larsen’s motion prevailed: that approval should be sought from another iwi group, Te Uri O Hau, for a proposed plan to build parks in Kaiwaka. At the time of the meeting, no communique had been received from Te Uri O Hau regarding their support of the proposed funding changes. Questions arose about whether any change could be enacted without the approval of all Kaipara iwi, regardless of this influential organisation’s stance.

“I fully accept that iwi can use this for political leverage, and this is their prerogative. All this is going to do is cause a significant loss to our whole community,” said councillor Larsen. “Reallocating $2 million to building a new annexe for the town hall would have been a simple and perfect solution.”

The final vote, to push on with the reallocation of the bulk of funding to Kaiwaka projects passed by eight votes to two. The decision leaves Dargaville’s town hall precinct with an uncertain future, despite Councillor Larsen’s resolve to champion alternative funding streams for the rebuild. It also leaves the relationship between the KDC and important Kaipara iwi Te Roroa in disarray. ¢

“The day was in honour of the great horseman who is buried on the property.

It is an opportunity for his family to come together and run an event for the community as Steve’s father looks down from the urupā,” said Kath Nathan.

Locals and riders from other communities took part in the horse sports day. The family-run event was started by Gus Nathan and is now organised by his children, Deb and Steve Nathan, amongst other whānau members.

“My dad had the opportunity to share his kaupapa with his two children, and now, his grandchildren are involved in riding too. Poutō Horse Sports is about riders and horses experiencing something

different for experienced and nonexperienced riders of all ages,” says organiser Deb Nathan. There was an obstacle course, steer penning, a keyhole, single and pairs barrel and pole bending races, cross country and team roping two-go-round activities.

There was a lolly scramble for the children and food and refreshments for supporters and participants to enjoy.

“Some of the riders that attended do the national rodeo circuit, and others are homegrown locals. The event was for everybody to come out and celebrate. We are grateful for the support from everyone who takes part,” Deb said. ¢

More than $81,000 has been raised in just 12 hours in the More FM All Day Breakfast programme, which saw a tour including stops in Dargaville, Matakohe and Maungaturoto as part of the Northland Rescue Helicopters annual appeal.

“After living in Europe for nine years, I came back to Dargaville four years ago. I love our community here, especially now with more youth involved in sports and fundraising.

It is an amazing place to start a family,” said Hannah.

“I had my baby Louie nine weeks ago. Many of us are having babies at this time and have done antenatal classes and had to give birth in Whangārei.

Hannah hopes the group will provide awhi (support) for parents and people wanting or thinking about having children. She is also organising guest speakers to talk and offer advice, such as breastfeeding specialists, midwives and natural health providers.

A popular jiu-jitsu club formed by junior, intermediate and senior enthusiasts of the oriental martial art at Paparoa are celebrating a national title achieved by their instructor, church pastor Sam Turner.

The Kaipara District Council heard last week from the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust, which has plans to develop a new hiking and cycling park at Lincoln Downs Farm.

Lifestyler caught up with Sam at one of his bi-weekly classes at the Paparoa Community Hall.

“I am one of the pastors/preachers at Paparoa Community Church; I have a black belt in judo and a purple belt in jiu-jitsu. I also run the local club, Hold Down Jiu Jitsu Paparoa, which we started at the end of July.

“I entered the New Zealand Nationals Jiu-Jitsu Competition which took place on Saturday, October 21, down at the Barfoot & Thompson Stadium in Auckland. A presentation to the council’s October meeting was prepared by spokespeople Mike Hay and Gordon Hosking, outlining an ambitious scheme to turn the wooded end of the rural property into a multi-use recreational space, with tracks for both walkers and mountain bikers. There’s a lot of work to be done, with some underway already.

“We’ll put in a picnic area and adjacent car park,” said Mr Hay. “The main ridge of the park conveniently separates the tramping tracks from the mountain bike tracks, and some tramping tracks are already finished.”

A professional bike track design company has been consulted, and their experts took a good look at how to make the most of the wooded, hilly terrain.

“They came back to us and were very positive about the possibilities,” Mr Hay said.

The MTCT is seeking one big change from the KDC to help complete its vision.

While the council had intended for the Lincoln Downs reserve to formally become a park, as of now, that designation has not been given to the land. It is holding up funding, with many funding providers unwilling to make grants for projects undertaken on private land.

To help with this funding and facilitate public access from Brown Road, which has already been proposed by council staff, it is the contention of those who wish to see this park become a reality that such changes are included in the next Long Term Plan. ¢

They convinced 30 of their mates to grow moustaches in 2003, and by 2004, they had focussed on a cause: fighting prostate cancer through early detection.

That year, the lads raised $57,618 for six related charities.

By 2007, New Zealand had got in behind the Movember initiative, too.

Soon, the number of nations supporting the cause would grow to 20, including the UK, US and many European and Asian countries. From 30 mo bros, the ranks of those who have participated have grown to encompass more than six million people. Movember donations have funded more than 1,320 health projects directly affecting men.

The focus, through the years, has been on three of the biggest killers of men.

These are prostate and testicular cancers and suicide. New Zealand’s societally dismissive attitude toward mental health, its lack of funding, the stigmatisation and ridicule of men who admit they have mental health problems, and the fear of facing issues such as depression alone all contribute to this nation’s shocking suicide statistics, some of the world’s worst. Men are three or four times more likely to die this way than women.

The new government will be asked to launch an independent inquiry into rural banking, with serious questions raised by Federated Farmers on whether their constituents are getting a raw deal.

With the Commerce Commission currently undertaking a study on personal banking, Federated Farmers members and leadership are concerned that its terms of reference shut farm banking practices out of the debate.

“Farmers are doing it tough right now with rising costs, bad weather and falling payouts. The last thing they want to be worrying about is whether they’re getting a fair deal from their bank,” said Federated Farmers domestic commerce and competition spokesperson Richard McIntyre.

A survey from May this year shows how farmers feel the squeeze, not just from the cost of living and inflationary pressures but directly from their banks.

Under this alliance, banks have collectively agreed lending strategies, including setting 2030 targets for reducing the level of emissions levels associated with lending.

“This banking alliance raises some very serious questions about whether our banks are acting in a truly competitive manner or if the joint commitment is effectively banks collaborating on a joint lending strategy,” Mr McIntyre said. ¢

unfairly punished,” says National’s transport spokesperson Simeon Brown.

He’s referring to the added costs levied on internal combustion engine vehicles during the last years of the Ardern and Hipkins administrations. These were labelled as anti-farmer and antitradesperson by some protest groups.

One of these groups, Groundswell, organised mass ute and tractor parades through several Kiwi towns to show their displeasure, with many turning out in Dargaville.

The other side of the coin was an up to $8,000 rebate on the purchase of electric vehicles. The catch? Many of these cars came with a price tag of $60,000 to $70,000, out of the grasp of most average people. Critics decried the Labour Party subsidising the rich to never again pay road user charges or petrol taxes, while the poor, and those in EV-infrastructurestrapped rural towns, suffered.

“There’s probably almost no doubt that it did make a little bit of difference,” said Motor Trade Association CE Lee Marshall.

“If you look at what’s happening globally, the uptake of EVs is happening dramatically in every developed country.

Now, both the tax and the incentive are gone, and they will likely not be much lamented in rural New Zealand. However, something has changed, which may make a difference. As Mr Marshall noted, EV and hybrid machines that work outside of city centres are coming on stream. There’s a plug-in Ranger on its way, a fully electric Transit van, hybrid Land Cruiser and EV utes from many brands, old and new. It’s what the market wants.

In the meantime, the real dirty law change might be the end of public transport subsidies, which got the actual cause of most of our car pollution, the city commuter, off the roads in mass numbers.

With electricity also facing big problems when it comes to battery replacement, it might be time for the government to put away the sledgehammer of laws and taxes and look at the more subtle and effective option — investment into hydrogen power for transport. ¢

A new voice for dairy farmers u by Andy Bryenton

Dairy New Zealand has a new leader, coinciding with new leadership in Wellington and taking over from an incumbent who has served during a tumultuous decade.

Dr Tim Mackle has stepped down from the leadership of DairyNZ after guiding the industry advocate group through the era of Covid-19 and critical negotiations with the central government over emissions and regulation in the sector.

He is replaced by Waikato-based CEO Campbell Parker, who comes to the role with formidable experience in both the rural and corporate worlds. Before his selection as DairyNZ’s chief executive, he was CEO of GEA Farm Technologies, an industry leader.

“Recruiting a new chief executive who is passionate about dairy farming and its future has been hugely important to us, alongside leadership skills to continue DairyNZ’s positive direction, as an organisation here first and foremost to represent our dairy farmers,” said Dairy NZ chair Jim van der Poel. “Campbell brings significant leadership and sector experience that will be invaluable to both DairyNZ’s senior team and in supporting and representing our farmer levy payers in a wide range of forums.”

As well as CEO experience with GEA Farm Technologies, Mr Parker has also worked at a high level with well-known firms such as PGG Wrightson, the Bank of New Zealand and Ballance Agri-Nutrients.

He says that he is excited to meet the challenges of his new role, contributing to dairy farming across New Zealand.

“I am genuinely humbled and excited to be joining DairyNZ as the next chief executive. I am passionate about the role the dairy sector plays in creating jobs, building communities, and contributing to the success of the New Zealand economy,” said Mr Parker. “It is important to build on the good work Tim and the team have done over the past decade and to keep that moving, working collaboratively to ensure long-term sustainability and profitability of the sector.”
