Kaipara connected businesses have taken out top honours in the Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards. Mangawhai Artists Inc and Giftbox Boutique NZ Ltd were successful at the Whangarei ceremony last Friday.

While pleased to be shortlisted from all the entries received, Mangawhai Artists Inc was then surprised to be selected as finalists in all three of their entered categories, and even more so, to take out top honours in two of them. “It was quite a big decision to enter — it was good for us to get everyone working together and get feedback from the judging process on how to progress what we are doing,” said Mangawhai Artists Inc chair, Mary-Anne Boyd. recognises initiative, creativity and entrepreneurship across creative industries. Winning categories were the Top Energy Best Not-for-Profit Organisation Award, which acknowledges the business focus on good governance and outside funding, and the Ricoh Northland Excellence in Business Micro Business Award, for an organisation that demonstrates good business practice and future direction. Mangawhai Artists Inc has a committee of 10 overseeing the business for its 160

active members, and Mrs Boyd said the process had provided valuable dialogue from the judges on how the committee can continue to do a good job for its members. Another business with Kaipara connections, Giftbox Boutique NZ Ltd, is owned by former Dargaville resident Katie Gray with her husband Andrew. They now employ three staff memwbers.
