While pleased to be shortlisted from all the entries received, Mangawhai Artists Inc was then surprised to be selected as finalists in all three of their entered categories, and even more so, to take out top honours in two of them.

“It was quite a big decision to enter — it was good for us to get everyone working together and get feedback from the judging process on how to progress what we are doing,” said Mangawhai Artists Inc chair, Mary-Anne Boyd.

They were a finalist in the Creative Northland Excellence Award, which

recognises initiative, creativity and entrepreneurship across creative industries.

Winning categories were the Top Energy Best Not-for-Profit Organisation Award, which acknowledges the business focus on good governance and outside funding, and the Ricoh Northland Excellence in Business Micro Business Award, for an organisation that demonstrates good business practice and future direction. Mangawhai Artists Inc has a committee of 10 overseeing the business for its 160

active members, and Mrs Boyd said the process had provided valuable dialogue from the judges on how the committee can continue to do a good job for its members.

Another business with Kaipara connections, Giftbox Boutique NZ Ltd, is owned by former Dargaville resident Katie Gray with her husband Andrew.

They now employ three staff memwbers.

p The cast for the upcoming Christmas show is excited to be well into rehearsals for their production of Charlie’s Christmas Adventures. The enthusiastic 6 to 14-year-olds make up a cast of almost 20 and will participate in presenting fun and lighthearted entertainment for the entire audience.

 After the success of last year’s competition and a high level of enthusiasm and entries, the White Rock Gallery held another Trash to Art competition recently, with artist Susanne Harrison taking out the top prize in the recycled category for her Fanbird. The Paparoa event showed an abundance of creative talent, with plenty of humour and an emphasis on the environment. Organiser, Kathy Reynolds, congratulates all entrants on their wildly original creations.

Susanne also proved her talent in the Found Objects category with her Puddy Tat, a highly commended was presented to Ross Murphy for his Holy Bird House. This entry also won the Viewers’ Choice award.

p Three Kaipara athletes, Jaimee Mason, Grace Christey and Makayla Randall, excelled with their Northland aerobics team at the recent NZ National Gymnastics Championships in Tauranga.

The 29 team members produced incredible results, returning with a total of 14 medals between them, eight of which were gold. Grace Christey and Jaimee Mason were also awarded proficiency pins for producing high scores at the competition. “We are super proud of the effort the girls put into preparing for the event, and it is always exciting to see them perform at Nationals and continue to grow as athletes through the experience,” said coach and director, Active Attitude, Ashleigh McCaw.

Business awards success for Kaipara

Members of the Baylys Beach community are elated to finally receive a positive result in the application for the proposed community centre and base for the surf life saving patrol.

Considerations were presented at a submission hearing held at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club recently, as 26 locals and three Baylys Beach Society committee members discussed the pros and cons of the building with council representatives.

Topics of discussion included were conditions of use around event management and regarding the future management of the site. In addition, Baylys Beach Community Centre Charitable Trust chairman, Graeme Ramsey, expressed some frustration at the need for gifted funds being used to pay for the lengthy consent process.

The trust bought a section for the centre on the corner of Seaview Road and Bayly Street funded by a generous and anonymous donation to the local community in 2016, and since then, there have been a number of challenges around getting building consent.

The eagerly anticipated response arrived a few days afterwards, and many residents expressed their delight at the prospect of the centre proceeding on social media. They also conveyed their gratitude to the trust members for their time and commitment.

“This is a significant step forward for us — now it’s going to happen,” said Mr Ramsey.

“The trust is pleased and relieved, and very grateful to the community for

their continuing support. The community will appreciate having a gathering place, and having effective surf life saving facilities will bring more people into the area, knowing it is safer,” said Trish Rolfe, of the Baylys Beach Holiday Park.

Club captain of Baylys Surf Life Saving, Kyran Gillespie, added, “The facility is vital to our aim of becoming a sustainable club, and be able to operate a fully affiliated surf life saving service.”

The project will proceed with the trust holding a planning meeting to formulate a budget since costs will now have increased, and assign a building project manager to see it through to completion.

“Offers of help will be accepted from community members willing to help, whether that is landscaping, digging holes, building or supplying materials — we will find jobs for those willing to help,” said Mr Ramsey. ¢

Friends and family of Ruawai identity, Gordon Murray, celebrated his 99th birthday recently, sharing memories and honouring his lifetime of extraordinary achievements, along with his wife, Noni, who celebrated her 90th.

In a new exhibition at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville, pottery artist Yvonne Tana showcases some of her recent works. The Kaipara Art Award second placegetter has named her collection The Mates and greeted visitors at the opening on October 26.

Born on October 14 1919, Gordon is the recipient of numerous awards and long service medals, much community service recognition, and has been an active member of the Ruawai community for more than 70 years.

During this time, Gordon was a founding member of many clubs and organisations in the area and was recognised by the Hillary Commission with a long service award, as the longest standing steward with the Motorsport Association of New Zealand.

Yvonne’s interest in art and sculpture began when she was seven, playing with clay on the beach in Pouto where her family farmed. In high school, she was inspired by her art teacher, leading Maori clay artist Colleen Urlich.

“I learnt pottery in Te Kopuru with Vanessa Welsh, and Manos Nathan was doing carving then — he liked what I did, so that’s when I became involved,” said Yvonne.

“A lot of my work examines how to be a contemporary Maori woman, whilst still upholding traditional values.”

He spent time in the RNZAF as a flight engineer, and with a friend bought the Shell garage in Ruawai.

With his wife Noni, he raised a family of seven children, and they now have several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“Auntie Noni is like the great-grandnanny of so many of us and Uncle Gordon is like the general of the entire family. The last of his kind to be built with that sort of resilience, strength, determination and leadership,” said great-niece, Bridget Carter-Chan. ¢

Rower at the helm of Northland Rescue Chopper Appeal Former Trans-Atlantic Rowing Champion and Olympian Rob Hamill is the latest ambassador for the Northland Rescue Helicopter service.

Northland Rescue Chopper General Manager Vanessa Furze says the service is thrilled to have Rob on board.

The announcement comes as the service prepares to celebrate 30 years of saving lives.

“We are so well represented by our ambassadors and they really are very important to helping raise the awareness of our need to raise funds to meet operational shortfalls over the busy summer months,” says Mrs Furze.

Hamill put his hand up to help raise awareness of the need for ongoing public donations after spending many weeks in Northland in recent times getting his catamaran ready for a family sailing adventure to the Pacific Islands and beyond.

He knows only too well how life can change in a split second having now lost three of his siblings to varying causes of death over the past 30 years. And after rowing over 4000km across the Atlantic Ocean in 1997, Hamill says he became acutely aware of how vulnerable people can be without help at hand.

“I am very privileged to be supporting the Northland Rescue Helicopter service because the work they do is amazing,” says Mr Hamill.

“What is particularly impressive is how they work together with St John, the Northland DHB, the emergency services throughout Northland and so many amazing volunteers.

It has been said by many people before but you just never know when you might need the service and I am looking forward to taking part in some of the activities during the 2018 fundraising appeal.”

She went on to study at NorthTec and then transferred to Toihoukura, the school of Maori visual arts in Gisborne.

With them she exhibited all over New Zealand, then in her second year of study in 2002, her world changed dramatically when she survived a stroke.

Earlier this year, New Zealand’s only all-girl Bluegrass Band, Hot Diggity, performed at the Dargaville Town Hall as a fundraiser to help Yvonne realise her dream of exhibiting in Gisborne.

Yvonne’s new exhibition will be at the gallery until November 20. ¢

The Northland Rescue Helicopter Service has flown more than 20,000 missions since 1988 and has been instrumental in saving thousands of lives.

Until the end of November, the service will be involved in numerous activities throughout Kaipara and Whangarei to pay tribute to thousands of lives saved, and those lost, since the very first flight on November 17, 1988.

Meantime, the service’s fleet of rescue helicopters continue to clock up dozens of flights every month.

Paparoa’s new medical centre and library are getting underway with work about to begin after months of “delay and frustration.”

Paparoa Medical Society chair, Graham Taylor says “within the next two weeks builders and other trades will be transforming the old Otamatea council building into a modern fit-forpurpose facility.

“As befits a community building open to the public, there will be major upgrades to the interior, with new plumbing and wiring, consultation and treatment rooms plus a dedicated space for the Paparoa Community Library. Also requiring attention will be the fire safety rating, emergency exits, improvements to the water supply and sewage disposal systems.

“Many aspects of the building were not compliant for a public building in today’s world. Bringing these items up to standard will incur a considerable cost and obtaining the necessary funding has taken much longer than expected and months of delay and frustration.“ Mr Taylor said the society is deeply grateful to many individuals

and organisations from the Paparoa community for financial support.

“We understand the disruption and inconvenience the closure of the building has caused and appreciate the patience of the community.

As a registered charitable trust with IRD, Paparoa Medical Society would welcome any contributions from businesses, individuals or organisations.

“Such donations would assist in providing the quality finishing touches to the project and would receive a 33% tax refund.”

The total cost of the upgrade is in excess of $350,000.

On completion, the medical centre will be operated by Coast to Coast Health Care Ltd with additional space leased to the library.

“It is now all systems go, with the works expected to take around eight weeks for Paparoa to have a first-class facility that will serve the community for many years to come.”

The recorded footage was authorised for retrieval and release after meeting Privacy Act criteria, which enabled police officers to positively identify the vehicle, and view all steps leading up to and during the ram raid on the store frontage.

The stolen vehicle was quickly located and offenders charged. The community CCTV project is progressing well with more cameras being installed. “The installation process has gone well, and

we now have a large area covered,” said CCTV project coordinator, Constable Reuben Cohen.

“We are proud to be able to help NZ Police in setting up the monitoring of the township, allowing offenders to be identified,” said Dargaville Community Development Board chairman, Allan Mortensen.

“We want to prevent crime from occurring rather than apprehending afterwards.” ¢

KAIPARA SPOTLIGHT NOTE TO DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS Between October and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement. This introduces fresh aggregate into the failure in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet Council specifications for hardness.

We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit while traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers, and to prevent damage to the repairs. Smokefree Policy Review Council is seeking your feedback on a proposed Smokefree Kaipara Policy. This policy aims to educate Kaipara’s communities and visitors to not smoke around Tamariki/children, while helping provide safe and healthy spaces. The proposed Smokefree Kaipara Policy wishes to expand Council’s current policy to provide a large number of areas and public places where both smoking and vaping are discouraged, this is to ensure greater protection for our Tamariki/children.

Gambling Venues Policy Review The Kaipara District Council’s draft Class 4 Gambling Venues Policy is open for public feedback from 2 October 2018 until 5 November 2018.

Council staff are seeking feedback on the preferred approach to retain the current Policy’s sinking lid regime, which will see the number of venues and machines reduce over time.

The Statement of Proposal also considers the option of setting a cap on numbers and venues, and outlines a number of proposed minor amendments to the current Policy.

Northland Inc has won a top honour at the 2018 Economic Development NZ Awards for their part in bringing a $445 million super fibre-optic submarine cable to Mangawhai.

The 15,000km super fibre-optic Hawaiki Cable project connects New Zealand with Australia, mainland United States, Hawaii and the Pacific, and is expected to future-proof New Zealand’s internet capacity for the next 25 years.

“Hawaiki Cable is now operational, which means that Northland now has a digital sector, we have underlying infrastructure to support it, we are creating a digital strategy,” said Northland Inc general manager investment and infrastructure, Vaughan Cooper.

Chief executive officer of EDNZ, Susan Houston, said the awards committee selected Northland Inc’s work on the Hawaiki project as an outstanding example of best practice in inward investment.

“In making that decision the committee was cognisant of the projects economic, social and cultural impact, not just on Northland but on wider New Zealand,” she said.

The Hawaiki Cable is a project within the Northland Tai Tokerau Economic Action Plan and was turned on in July. ¢

Trees do not need to go The Dargaville Community Development Board (DCDB) says any suggestion that two pohutukawa trees on Victoria Street should be removed, as reported in last week’s Kaipara Lifestyler is “a complete misunderstanding.”

Following an enquiry from the board regarding creating clearer visibility in the area, Kaipara District Council invited public suggestions on the idea, saying the trees affected CCTV coverage.

DCDB chair, Allan Mortensen, said the main focus of the CCTV camera placed in that location was to cover the nearby service station, as this type of business is regarded as a high-risk facility. If the trees in question could be trimmed to give a better vision of the surrounding area, it would create added value to the camera’s operation. The CCTV project

An education and employment expo will be held during November to provide an opportunity for students, career changers and job seekers to find out how local businesses can assist them in advancing their skills.

With a total population of approximately 40 birds, the birds have teetered on the brink of extinction since the 1970s, and a dedicated team of fairy tern DOC rangers have been busy since September trapping for predators near nesting sites.

“Our fairy tern team has been preparing for the breeding season for a few months, and we are thrilled to have eggs in nests. One of the earlier nests was lost early on, but three remain. We are hopeful the nests will be successful, and the chicks will fledge by Christmas,” says DOC Fairy Tern Team ranger, Ayla Wiles.

just above high tide level, which leaves them vulnerable to predators, disturbance by people, 4WD vehicles and dogs. They are also at risk from stormy weather and very high tides.

Once widespread, the New Zealand fairy tern now breeds at only four nesting sites, found at Papakanui Spit and north and south of Mangawhai.

The public is advised to avoid nests and chicks, keep dogs on leads, and remove bait and rubbish to deter predators.

If you are being chased or squawked at you are too close to a nest so move away — all of these actions will ensure the birds raise their chicks successfully. ¢

Held on Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24, at the Dargaville Town Hall, the Dargaville Community Development Board has invited organisations from the community who can provide training programmes, apprenticeships, new skill pathways or vocation changes to attendees. Those attending can expect to see what businesses in the Kaipara District have on offer whether they are already in the workforce or

wanting to secure a position through retraining. “The outcome we hope for is a new generation of skilled people for the local workforce,” said Dargaville Community Development Board enterprise development manager, Lorraine Davidson.

The joint initiative between the NZ Police and Northland DHB to establish a better way of assisting families in the treatment of methamphetamine use is proving to be hugely successful and will be aided further with the future availability of extra beds in the Dargaville detox unit.

The Kauri Coast is to lose four tracks across the kauri lands as part of a nation-wide permanent closure by the Department of Conservation to combat the spread of kauri dieback disease.

Te Ara Oranga is a pilot programme founded in October 2017, and in its first year has resulted in more than 200 police referred cases now being managed by specialised clinicians.

The main aim of the project is to provide a referral pathway for police and treatment resources to break drug supply chains and ensure that anyone who would benefit from treatment is offered the opportunity.

In the last six months alone, there have been more than 20 people placed into employment, four people who were at risk of losing their jobs have been able to retain them, and a further 18 people on job choice training.

When further beds are available after the completed p Assistant commissioner NZ Police, Richard Chambers, says the programme provides a significant opportunity expansion of the Dargaville to focus on reducing one of the major drivers of crime detox unit, the capacity for in our community future assistance will increase.

Conservation minister, Eugenie Sage, says 21 tracks will be closed or partially closed in the Kauri Coast, Kaitaia, Whangarei, on Great Barrier Island, in Hauraki, Waikato and Tauranga.

Where partial closures are in place, the open sections will be upgraded to eliminate wet and muddy sections and better protect the roots of kauri trees.

“As there is currently no proven cure for kauri dieback, the best way to protect our kauri is to slow and stop the disease from spreading,” Eugenie Sage said. ”The track closures are permanent and will be monitored.

“I appreciate some people may be disappointed by the closure of a favourite track, but I strongly encourage everyone — do the right thing and respect the track closures to reduce the risk to kauri forests.”

The decision was made after public consultation, and the majority of public submissions favoured closure.

DOC has closed tracks in the past to prevent the spread of kauri dieback.

“Closures may be reconsidered in the future if additional science and

other information provide certainty that public access would not cause any risk to kauri. Although protecting kauri is the key focus, the department did consider the need to maintain recreation opportunities, and there are still many walking and tramping options available in nearby areas.”

In consultation with local communities and iwi, DOC is continuing work to establish the next steps for the remaining tracks on kauri land that have not yet been upgraded. That will include their upgrade, closure or partial closure. ¢

ARMISTICE CENTENARY A century since the guns fell silent u by Andy Bryenton

There’s an old saying about war — ‘what is begun in blood can only be finished in ink’. So it was at the end of World War One, at the time the bloodiest and most costly conflict the world had ever seen. Four years of trench warfare, naval engagements and covert operations had led to a final shifting of the stalemate, and the allied forces accepted a surrender from the German Kaiser in November of 1918.

This peace would come into effect on the 11th day of the 11th month — indeed, those crafting the armistice went further, setting the exact time for the war’s end at 11am in the morning.

The news put an end to some of the most bitter and brutal fighting of the war, which in its late stages had seen the introduction of ever more advanced technologies of death — the first battle tanks, advanced aerial bombing, flamethrowers and artillery so powerful it had to be moved on rails due to its sheer size.

Some say that the tipping point came with the landing of the United States Army, who came to bolster the ANZAC, French, British, Canadian and other allied forces on the Western Front after the collapse of Russia in the east.

Others say that the German fighting spirit was already broken after hardpressed allied units — our own Kiwi soldiers among them — held the line against one last desperate series of

assaults in early 1918. One thing was for certain, though — Europe would never be the same again. The loss of life skewed whole demographics, as populations of young men were decimated or worse.

The exiled Kaiser fled to the Netherlands, while an interim government in Germany was forced to agree to the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles.

German shame and economic hardship would prove fertile ground for a growing new philosophy — National Socialism.

In Russia, Lenin, Stalin and the Communists had overthrown the Tsar.

Halfway around the world, New Zealand was also in a state of shock.

It had not been a war that was televised. Communications were through official channels, and focussed on morale and victory.

While the news of the war’s triumphant end was met with celebration, the unspoken thoughts of

Across the Kaipara District, on the morning of Sunday, November 11 many people will congregate to remember the end of the first world war and give tribute to those who served.

Locally, many young men left their farming, tree felling or gum digging roles, excited to be a part of the so-called grand adventure of war, leaving behind friends and family.

It is with great sadness, yet tremendous pride, these soldiers are remembered in annual commemorations — more so this year as a centenary.

All members of the public are invited to attend various services around New Zealand and within the Kaipara, and nationwide a Roaring Chorus is encouraged to recapture the jubilation

felt as the end of the war became known.

“There were songs and cheers, miscellaneous pipings and blastings, and tootings and rattlings — a roaring chorus of gladsome sounds.” (Armistice celebrations in Wellington described in The Evening Post, November 12 1918).

In the newest exhibition For the Love of … at Mangawhai Artists Gallery, the eleven artists of The Originals’ Art Group combine to present a unique collection of distinctive styles, approaches, and topics, as they enjoy the opportunity to showcase their work.

A new manager has been appointed at the Mangawhai Golf Club, and he is looking forward to chipping in and driving the club forward.

Opening at 6.30pm on Thursday, October 26, in a celebration of creativity, visitors will see a skilful range of landscapes and seascapes, vivid abstracts, wow factor portraits, and more.

The exhibiting artists Marion Bilton, Janine Brougham, Ann Connew, Ailsa Dennis, Jean Fountain, Linda Hobbs, Ann Howard, Gordon McGibbon, Lynn Middleton, Tracey Scott and Chris Thomson meet regularly to work together to advance their skills.

Every Monday morning and in all weathers, the group of artists gather to make art, be creative, share their

knowledge and offer friendship, as the Mangawhai Community Hall provides a welcoming space turned into a studio for artists.

“We can have as many as 25 people painting, drawing, experimenting and teaching each other skills and techniques. Many of our group were new to Mangawhai and art when they first came along. We are always thrilled to welcome newcomers to our Monday mornings and invite people to drop in for a look — we love encouraging people to join us,” said organiser, Ann Howard.

Born and bred in Warkworth, Brad Grimmer will commute daily to his new role, where he plans to consolidate and maintain the popular course’s status as one of New Zealand’s best.

Northland Inc has won again at the 2018 Economic Development NZ Awards with Extension 350, a farmer-led farmer-focussed extension project that aims to lift profitability, environmental sustainability and wellbeing on Northland farms.

Extension 350 project lead, Luke Beehre, said the sustainability development award acknowledges the farmers that are involved in the project, and in particular, the target farmers who have opened their farm businesses up for scrutiny.

Buying a large mower is often seen as a compromise between maximum power and accuracy — the larger your chosen machine, the more likely it is that you’ll need smaller, more nimble secondary tools to finish the job neatly around hedges, rockeries and other features of the modern garden.

It can be particularly vexing for the lifestyle block owner, who must tackle both massive swathes of lawn and intricate sections in the home garden.

There’s a new answer to the issue of sourcing a mower with plenty of power and fingertip control. Grasshopper’s 500 V series offers the durability and grunt of a professional zero turn mower along with a front mounted cutting deck, which can be positioned with the accuracy of a scalpel, tucking around raised beds and slipping under foliage to ensure a tidy finish.

Power comes from a 725cc air-cooled Briggs and Stratton v-twin — the kind developed for commercial operations.

It’s delivered to twin independent driving wheels for a turning circle which is all but nonexistent — the entire machine can spin in place with a touch of the controls. Out front, the operator can clearly see the full dimensions of a 42 inch wide cutting deck, allowing for the precise deployment of a trio of highstrength blades. It’s often difficult to keep a cool head in summer traffic — but when it comes to putting the chill on scorching temperatures inside your car, that little button marked with the magic letters ‘AC’ is a godsend. First fitted to Packard luxury limos and town cars in the 1930s — as a mammoth device taking up most of the boot and producing literal icicles inside — this innovation is now a must-have on even the most economical little hatchback.

Along with advancements in air conditioning and climate control technology in vehicles has come the inevitable added complexity, which makes it impossible to maintain or repair such things in the backyard. Many cars in the New Zealand road fleet get by with only a fan, as their air conditioners have lost their ‘oomph’ somewhere down the road. That can mean various things — from a simple need for more gas in the system to an errant stone punching a hole in the condenser unit.

No matter the cause, if your cold air has been reduced to a lukewarm trickle, it’s probably fixable for less than you might expect. Moreover, what price can you put on a whole season of comfort?

Things have certainly changed under the hood since Rolls Royce boasted that their early air conditioners delivered the power of 30 home refrigerators. Over the years, the efficiency of AC systems onboard vehicles has improved, and even the gas they use has changed.

That is true not just for passenger cars, but also for working vehicles. One could argue that the freight industry runs on
