Mangawhai Matters is the name of this alliance of residents, who wish to see sustainable growth that preserves the environment, character and infrastructural capacities of the town.

“Even in its original consented form the development will, for better or worse, have a significant and permanent effect on the whole of Mangawhai,” says group spokesperson, Carol Lloyd.

“The developer is pursuing a private plan change (PPC78) that will effectively rewrite the planning rules and add a whole new high-density town between the heads and the village.”

It represents the biggest development in the history of the Kaipara.

“As such, it presents problems and challenges as well as growth opportunities.

“The council also needs to be able to develop a transparent and comprehensive Long Term Plan that outlines what works, amenities and services will be provided to ensure that the new town can be absorbed into the wider Mangawhai community,” say Mangawhai Matters members. continued on page 5 …

Last week a group of intrepid classic Mini drivers stopped off in Dargaville on their way to Cape Reinga, as part of an attempt to reach the ‘four corners’ of the North Island under Mini-power alone. Rally participants have been to Cape Palliser in the south. They plan to follow-up their stop at the top with a jaunt down to Mount Taranaki and the East Cape, finishing their multi-day road trip in style.

At the end of the year, it is a farewell to the senior students, prior to study leave and graduation. It is the final opportunity to earn House points, contributing to the highly sought-after House Shield. Activities included basketball shoot, foam sponge pass, frisbee throw and mini-tramp jumps. p Whanau Awhina Plunket has a new coffee group in Kaiwaka to support caregivers of pepi and tamariki from the local area. “The idea was born out of a Plunket nurse experiencing first-hand what having a baby in a rural area can be like,” says community support coordinator Ema Kelly.

Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust stalwart, Dr Gordon Hoskings, has been awarded for his work in improving public access to the outdoors by the Walking Access Commission, as it calls for new nominations for the coming year.

A hui organised by Te Uri o Hau at Te Arai last week saw more than 90 guests and stakeholders attending to hear the future aspirations outlined in its Building Pathways initiative.

Dr Hosking was named an Outdoor Access Champion earlier this year.

However, the process was interrupted by the Covid-19 emergency, and he is to receive his award at a local event in early December.

The awards have been running since 2013 to recognise significant contributions to public access to the outdoors. That might include building new tracks and trails, securing new legal access, or championing public rights of access.

Dr Hosking says he “feels pretty humbled at being singled out for an award that really belongs to the 40odd Trackies who slave away every Friday morning building tracks in the Mangawhai environs. It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated group with all the benefits that accrue, both social and physical, while developing walking tracks for the wider community.

“The Trackies are never short of the skills needed for any new challenge.

Engineers, contractors, farmers, planners and just lots of Kiwi common sense and know-how. Our immediate focus is to complete a 500m boardwalk through the mangroves connecting the currently no exit Back Bay walkway back to Molesworth Drive.”

The event was to present future aspirations for the Nga Uri o Hau Native Nursery based at Te Arai.

It will move from a not-for-profit model to a commercially sustainable business entity. It was established by the hapu in 2016 as part of TUOH’s Project Mahuhu.

TUOH chair, Antony Thompson, in his opening statement touched on the revitalisation of the hapu as an entirety.

“The Te Uri o Hau you see here — is a revitalised Te Uri o Hau. In the last two to five years, there has been a much younger board than most.

The trust’s CEO, Jonathan Rishworth, reiterated the importance of the Kaipara Harbour and lamented degradation of its environment.

“That is their heart,” he said. “It’s never about the person.

Dargaville High School students won’t let Covid put a dent in their cultural celebration of Pasifika. The school’s thirdannual Fia Fia Night was set back by the lockdowns and social distancing concerns, but now returns for October 30 as a festival of music, dance and artistic expression.

With many social, cultural and entertainment programs in disarray following a tumultuous year, this will be Northland’s only such Pasifika cultural festival for 2020.

However, the decision was made by both students and teachers to push on and capitalise on the practice they’ve already put in.

That includes traditional dance and cultural performances from our neighbours in the Pacific, with examples including Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands.

“It’s a family event, and something new to experience here in Dargaville,” says Semisi, a year 12 student, part of the group of 16 who are helping present Fia Fia Night in collaboration with their educators.

Arranged in segments, which range from duos to large ensemble performances, the event promises to be both a visual and musical spectacle that is suitable for the

whole family. Some Dargaville locals may be familiar with the dance and music of the Pacific Islands, while for others, this will be a new and exciting experience.

With many of the nations represented off-limits for tourism right now, it’s good to appreciate a cultural outreach and the spirit of friendship between our countries. New Zealand itself is, after all, a chain of Pacific Islands itself.

Pasifika culture is now widely appreciated as part of the rich tapestry that makes up the Kiwi way of life.

“Enjoy some refreshments, learn about the culture of our closest neighbours in the Pacific, and enjoy the show,” said the student and teacher organisers.

Doors open at 6pm, at the Dargaville High School auditorium this Friday, with a $5 cover charge for entry.

Curly questions and tricky answers come together this month as quiz night arrives in Dargaville, courtesy of the combined charitable groups that comprise the Whanau Focus Centre.

Meanwhile, there’s more quiz action on offer as the Maungaturoto RSA hosts an afternoon of trivia and trick questions for its town.

With a range of social support services working from one central hub, the Whanau Focus Centre has had a busy year. Manager Rachael Ashford says that this community event is a great chance to boost their coffers before the holiday season. All proceeds are going toward their work advocating for families, the elderly positive parenting and youth mentoring.

“We’ll be hosting our quiz night at the Dargaville Club on October 30, and challenging local clubs, businesses, teams and groups to field teams of six people. The cost, of $60 per table, will go directly to our community work. The event is at the Dargaville Club, and quiz teams can call 021 973 871 to book.”

Meanwhile, the Maungaturoto RSA offers another brain-teasing challenge, this time on November 1 at 4pm.

Along with prizes to be won for the

‘heart of the Kaipara’ town’s biggest brains, there will be spot prizes, live musical interludes and plenty of fun as legendary quizmaster Captain G puts on his top hat to lead the festivities. Once again, this is a great way to support a vital local institution, as all proceeds go directly to the RSA. Shane Hunt - Amazing story of survival Shane Hunt follows the Northland Rescue Helicopter on Facebook and is always astonished at the stories he sees on there – and knows the feeling all too well about how these rescue helicopter services can save lives.

It saved his more than a decade ago when he was critically injured in a gyrocopter crash in a rugged Northland location.

Through his partner at the time who was a local journalist, he was offered a ride in a gyrocopter – an open helicopter/aircraft that can fly high above ground and create great scenic trips – which is what Shane had expected on his flight.

Armed with his camera going on his phone, Shane hopped aboard behind the very experienced pilot who had offered him the ride, and strapped himself in.

“The flight was amazing to begin with, we travelled over the family farm and I could see for miles. I was taking photos and footage on my phone and it was awesome. On the way back the pilot decided to show me a few tricks – after the first one, my stomach was reeling and I thought of asking him to stop fb.com/northland.rescuehelicopter

but figured we weren’t far away from our landing spot,” he says.

“As he went into a vertical climb for the next trick, the gyrocopter was on its way up and just run out of lift. We were at least 120 feet up and we fell, fell straight down towards the ground. We hit the ground at about 100 kilometres an hour, nose first.”

The list of injuries he sustained is long – compound fractures to his tibia and fibula; broken femur; both knee caps shattered; both legs had turned inside out on impact; ruptured cruchiate ligaments; ripped rotator cuff on his left shoulder, which had a fractured socket; cracked eye socket, broken jaw and teeth; two brain bleeds and that was just the ones he can remember on the spot.

His pelvis had taken the brunt of the landing, with extensive damage – but still more injuries were to come from the aviation fluid leaking over his body from the gas tank that had been directly under his seat.

Chemical burns over his back and legs were exacerbated by the electric fence they had landed near, and that the rotor of the aircraft had become entangled in on landing.

Mangawhai Matters has reviewed all early community submissions, and several members have jointly lodged a comprehensive submission document.

The aim of the submission is to clearly identify and assess the core issues that need to be addressed during the planning process. The group has focussed mainly on character, infrastructure, community engagement and finances. However, they remain steadfast in their belief that the wishes of the community must be heard during the plan change process. Council sources say that the forthcoming Long Term Plan will address many concerns.

“Along with the Private Plan Change process, which specifically deals with the proposed Mangawhai Central development, the Long Term Plan process offers the entire community a chance to have their say on the areas the council will be focussing on across the next 10 years,” says the KDC’s communications liaison. “The Long Term Plan looks at current infrastructure, what needs repair, upgrades and changes, alongside growth projection, to ensure we’re supporting growth when it occurs.

The Northern Wairoa Social Club was turning 60. Their good friends and allies, the Northern Wairoa Settlers Club, were invited along as the cake was cut and some golden memories shared. The social club dates back to the early 1960s, a time when rural life in New Zealand could be isolating; an era before the internet or even full telephone coverage in some places.

Social clubs like the well-attended one in Dargaville provided a chance to get together with like-minded individuals, compare stories, share smart ideas and halve the burden of worries. They wove, as it’s said proverbially, ‘the tapestry of society’.

Thus, it’s no surprise that many firm friendships grew out of both the Northern Wairoa Social Club and the Northern Wairoa Settlers Club. Many of those who attended the early meetings of the club are still active today and attended Saturday’s festivities. The delicious cake baked for the event was courtesy of 96-year-old Leila Tibitts, who has regularly donated her culinary artistry for the club’s events.

The honour of the first slice went to 101-year-old Claire Robertson. Social club spokesperson, Adrienne Kohler, says that the meetings of both groups

This October 31 there’s an alternative to monsters, vampires and werewolves in Dargaville. A ‘grand circus’ themed light party is being thrown to deliver all the sweets, treats and entertainment without the fake blood and spiders.

Some younger children especially are more frightened and confused by the horror-themed imagery of Halloween than entertained. Acknowledging this, and wanting all children to have a place where they can have fun, the Lighthouse Church and Cool Bananas have been hosting entertaining shows and parties on the last day of October for several years now. This year, they’ve decided to go bigger than ever.

“We have decided on a circus theme, which gives kids all kinds of options for non-scary costumes and

fancy dress. We will have a candy floss machine, bouncy castle, circus performers, games, sideshows, food for sale, and of course plenty of lollies and prizes,” says co-organiser Marion McEwing. She reiterates that this light party is an event for the whole family and all ages, without any horror-themed scares, just good fun.

The long-awaited 14-bed dementia unit of the Riverview Rest Home at Maungaturoto is now a workplace for plumbers and electricians, among other trades, as a building in its own right, as organisers look to a community celebration ‘roof shout.’

“The roof is well and truly on, and the windows are going in as we speak,” said Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust chair, Graham Slatter.

A train to Donnellys

More than 100 excited train lovers arrived at Auckland Railway Station early one Saturday morning in March 1959.

They had come from as far away as Wellington, Gisborne and New Plymouth to take part in a special Northland train journey. It would be a 484-kilometre round trip that took them to Donnellys Crossing, the small village 40 kilometres north of Dargaville.

Rumour, later proving to be wellfounded, had whispered that Donnellys Crossing Line was about to be closed.

For those people using the train to get to town from the 14 little wayside stations on the 36-kilometre line, closure would be a huge change of lifestyle. For railway enthusiasts, this was probably the last chance to ride the rails to Donnellys.

Samuel S Green, himself once a farmer at Donnellys, was now mayor of Dargaville. None were more concerned about the threatened closure than he was. Respectfully known as Sammy and perhaps less respectfully as ‘Steam Ship Green’, no one was fighting harder to keep the service running. With station master, Mr R J Thomas, he was on the platform at Dargaville station to welcome the excursion train as it clattered into town. Mr Green travelled on the train to Donnellys Crossing.

A reporter from the New Zealand Herald’s publication The Weekly News was also a passenger on the way north.

Later, he wrote: ‘At Mamaranui, all the

members of the bowling club waved their panamas and cheered as the train went by.’

As it puffed past little wayside stations and farmhouses, many locals watched and wondered. At Kaihu, one of the biggest towns in the district, the train came to a brief stop.

Storekeeper Les Morfett reckoned that in all of his 14 years in business at Kaihu this was his biggest day. After buying most of his stock of ice cream and soft drinks, the crowd left for the final destination of Donnellys Crossing, seven hours after leaving Auckland Central. They steamed back into that city at 10.30pm that night.

Almost exactly four months later, the rumours became facts. On July 17 1959, Donnellys Branch Line was officially closed, ending 40 years of service.

A trainload of 200 excited children from Donnellys, Aranga, Tutamoe and Mamaranui schools made the last trip from Donnellys into Dargaville.

So ended a much-appreciated and valued service. Many were the stories and tales of the train and of those men who ran it. Men such as R Robinson station master, HF Baker driver, B Parangi fireman, J Mitchell guard and J Rahui surface man. Most storied of all was long-time guard Claude Soar,

remembered for his friendly nature and helpful ways. It was said he would stop the train at a farmhouse between stations especially for a heavily-laden shopper and would even wait for patrons to emerge from the Dargaville and Kaihu pubs.

Much to the dismay of Mayor Green, within a year the line was torn up, some sold to the Ministry of Works, some to Portland Cement Works and some as scrap. Green had visions of a tourist venture on the train to Donnellys and so bring visitors to town.

In 2020, it doesn’t seem such a wild idea now that the successful Dargaville Rail and River Company runs its self-

drive small rail cars to Tangowahine and Waiotira. A train to Donnellys Crossing would pass through some pleasant scenery and be within a few kilometres of Trounson Park, Omamari Lakes, Omamari Beach, Maunganui Bluff and Waipoua Forest. In 1991, a popular tourist attraction, Nelson’s Kaihu Kauri Gallery, was opened near Kaihu.

Many of the embankments and cuttings of the old track can still be seen, and at least two bridges are still usable. Could it have been a project for the Shane Jones’ Provincial Growth Fund to resurrect or is it too late? Perhaps Samuel S Green was a thinker ahead of his time. ¢

November is just around the corner, and that means the start of another month of men’s health awareness, fun fundraisers and the growing of many moustaches for Movember.

“Our work in mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer has never been more important — and we’ve never needed you more.”

That’s the message from Movember organisers this year, as the monthlong campaign for better men’s health doubles down on its message of support, early detection and looking out for your friends. Around the country, hundreds of upper lips will be shaved clean on Saturday, October 31, with the challenge to grow a distinguished moustache through the month.

Others will ditch their ordinarily hirsute facial style, taking the razor to long-established moustaches and beards for charity. You can either get sponsored to grow or lose your moustache by friends, workmates or family or donate to a fellow mobro’s efforts.

Others may choose to donate directly by visiting nz.movember. com/donate. Then, there are special events around the country, which

support the cause. You’ll find a bright blue show of solidarity right here in your local newspaper, as we donate to the Movember effort along with the gratefully-received assistance of our business community.

There’s more. Register a team of three and get on the green for the 2020 Mo Master golf challenge at nz.movember.com/get-involved/ mo-masters. Saddle up your motorcycle with mates and complete a ‘gentleman’s ride’ in the spirit of the distinguished gentleman’s motorcycle rally. Alternatively, host a mo day at work. Suitable comedy fake moustaches for the ladies are available at most novelty shops.

It’s all in good fun, but it’s also for a very good cause. New Zealand continues to lead the world in men’s suicide statistics.

This year everything from television documentaries to news articles to extra mental health funding has been mobilised to stop this alarming trend.

When swimming or surfing at Baylys Beach this year, you might see a brand new addition to the surf lifesaving team out on the sand.

The one-of-a-kind ‘beach ambulance’ is a rapid response vehicle based on the Can-Am Defender platform. It’s deployed thanks to Northland Motor Sports in Dargaville, helping the Baylys Beach Surf Lifesavers.

With a large area of coast to cover and the chance for emergencies to occur far from medical support, a fast response vehicle on the sand was seen to be as big of an asset as the surf lifesavers’ inflatable rescue boat in the water.

Anthony West, Nigel Randell and the team at Northland Motor Sports felt the longer wheelbase 4x4 Defender would fit the bill, and volunteered its services to assist the lifesavers on patrol.

Decked out in custom yellow and red livery over white, the ‘beach ambulance’ is equipped with a carrying deck suitable for a stretcher or life-saving floatation and medical equipment.

There is room for two surf lifesavers, extra grip tyres to conquer the sand and even flashing red strobe lights.

“We wanted to do something positive for the community and get the CanAm brand out there, affiliated with good works,” say the Northland Motor Sports team.

“It’s a very capable machine, and it should serve our local surf lifesavers well. We’re proud to put it at their service.” ¢

Dealing with mycotoxins in Northland Mould can be found on virtually everything; whether it is pasture, hay, silage, standing grain or the bread on a kitchen bench and given certain conditions, mould will multiply and produce mycotoxins.

Mycotoxins are harmful chemical compounds that are naturally produced by mould. They are very common at low levels in virtually all animal feedstuffs, and this can include pasture.

While not new, the last 15 years have brought many breakthroughs in the understanding of this natural, normal phenomenon. The number of identified mycotoxins and the ability to detect them has increased rapidly. In addition, the impact of mycotoxins on animal health and performance remains the subject of ongoing research around the world. With mycotoxins detectable at some level in over 90% of purchased feedstuffs globally, it is an issue that deserves the attention of all people who care for animals.

It is worth reviewing a few of the basic facts. Firstly, mycotoxins can be associated with pasture, for example, facial eczema and staggers. Secondly, they are extremely common at some level in virtually all feedstuffs. The third point is that mycotoxins are not living, and once produced by mould are very stable. That means these are not possible to ‘kill’ in contaminated feedstuffs.

Certain common mycotoxins can be inexpensively screened or more complex analysis can detect up to 54 different

The purpose of the trust is to establish and maintain scholarships which will be known as the THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER SCHOLARSHIPS.
