 The Small Pukekos Early Childhood Centre in Kaiwaka wanted to give back to the local community and held a creative arts expo where they sold pieces of artwork for charity. The children completed three pieces of artwork each, which were sold to friends, family and community members. “We were overwhelmed with the support and raised $860 — our target was $500,” said centre manager Crystal Chapman. “We have split the funds between the Kaiwaka Fire Brigade and St John Ambulance. The firefighters visited for their cheque presentation and the children were able to learn what the fire brigade do to help keep us safe.”

“We felt the farming community have had a tough time for the past couple of years with droughts and low dairy payouts so we organised a fun evening for them,” said veterinarian Todd Skudder.

“Farmers are under a lot of financial pressure at the moment and this event was created to help relieve a little bit of stress in their lives.

“We wanted to get them off the farm and be able to socialise with other

farmers and we came up with the fashion show and dinner idea.” The vet centre sought out key business partners to support the event and help fund the evening. continued on page 3 …

Principal Margie Ormsby says, “Tamoko the shih tzu is part of the furniture.  The students from the Hospitality Academy at Dargaville High School catered for the Farming, Fun, Fashion and Food event inspired by the Dargaville Veterinary Centre for their farming clients.

DHS careers advisor Ms Chiaroni said they are always pleased to see their students get real life opportunities. The students participated in the food preparation for over 200 people and the event also provided service practise, table serving and clearing as well. “It was a great opportunity to showcase the students and their developing skills,” said Ms Chiaroni.

A group of Maungaturoto residents are urging the Kaipara District Council to donate an unused section of land to the community for a children’s playground and park.

About 20 Maungaturoto residents met with commissioner John Robertson on site to present their proposition and will meet again with council this week to discuss the idea in depth.

Project coordinator Carl Miller became aware the land was for sale and approached the council with the park idea.

“It will be a kids’ playground and have fencing right around it. Maungaturoto only has one playground at the other end of town two kilometres away,” he said.

Local landscaper Richard Moore has been heavily involved in beautifying the township in the past and has suggested that the playground equipment be

accessible to special needs children as there is nothing else like this in the area.

President of the Maungaturoto Residents Association Terri Donaldson says the land is not suitable to build a house on but perfect for a park.

“Maungaturoto is a very spread out town and so having a park at the other end would help the locals a lot.

“It will be fantastic and a real asset to the town,” she says. “The next stage is to address the council and see if they can gift the land to the community and that’s all we are asking. We want to do all the work ourselves but we can’t do it without the land.” 

“We approached Dargaville High School’s Hospitality Academy to do the catering as an opportunity for them to put their talents to use and showcase what they do.

“They provided a five-course meal with meat supplied by Silver Fern Farms and the kumara came from Delta Produce Ltd. “It was a time for farmers to get off the farm and be supported by the community, it was really cool to showcase the academy of the school.” The evening was enjoyed by all with both male and female models stalking the catwalk in a variety of day and evening wear and accessories.

“It was a community inspired evening, giving farmers a night off and to know that the community was here last year, they are here this year and they will be here next year as well to support them, and whilst the farmers are hurting, we are also

aware there are also a lot of businesses in town who are not doing as well as they were last year. Tough times never last, tough people can,” said Todd. 

Preparing for scares

Understanding Parkinson’s

If you are in Kaiwaka on October 31, prepare for the fright of your life at Fright Night, one of the major events on the Kaiwaka Sports Association’s yearly calendar.

The Kaipara community educator for Parkinson’s New Zealand, Barbara Leslie, travels the district to educate and support those with the progressive neurodegenerative condition and provides education and referrals for needs clients may have that they are not getting help for and are entitled to.

“Each year the numbers attending get bigger and bigger and last year we had over 300 people there, so we’re hoping for another spooktacular night,” says Kaiwaka Sports Association general manager Cheryl Anderson.

The event promises ghoulish activities such as dancing, music loud enough to wake the dead, a photo booth, lolly scrambles, a halloweenthemed supper plate competition and face painting.

Walk through a haunted house if you dare and bring only your bravest

friends. A haunted house session for primary aged children will be held first before prize giving for the best dressed boy, girl and adult, and for the scariest supper plate.

This will be followed by an even scarier haunted house experience for the high school students and adults.

Doors open at 7.30pm, entry is $4 and free for adults and preschoolers.

There will be plenty of prizes including vouchers for Spookers, the Glass Bottom Boat, Whangarei Aquatic Centre, Planetarium North, NZ Maritime Museum and Sheepworld. 

“Parkinson’s Awareness week is November 1–7. I have been in this role since May 2014. Prior to that I worked as a public health and hospice nurse and I enjoy working with my clients. As educators we prefer to visit people in their own home as this gives us a better picture of what their needs may be,” said Barbara.

“At each visit the client’s situation is accessed and we see how things may have changed and if there are any new circumstances which need attending to. Parkinson’s is a very complex condition and there needs to be a lot of understanding for the person with it as well as their carers.”

Parkinson’s is caused by insufficient quantities of dopamine — a chemical in the brain. Dopamine enables quick, wellcoordinated movement. When dopamine levels fall, movements can become slow and awkward and Parkinson’s has both motor and non-motor symptoms,. While it cannot be cured it can be treated.

As Parkinson’s is a progressive condition, it can often take many years to develop and has little effect on life expectancy. Parkinson’s is often referred to as ‘Parkinson’s disease’ but it is not contagious and you cannot pass it from

New faces, Paegyn Walker and Shane Dick, have come on board at Nga Ripo, Kaipara Whanau Ora, in Dargaville as part of their Bachelor of Social Work degree through training provider, Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

They are in their second year of practical placement and say the marae based learning programme is a great education system. Nga Ripo is a collective which consists of six social service providers in the Kaipara area.

Paegyn originates from Hastings and says helping people has always been her passion.

“I enjoy walking alongside whanau who are in pursuit of Mauri Ora — personal well-being — in their lives.

My own personal experiences and the way in which I have grown and

transformed my life, have given me a unique perspective and understanding of some of the challenges that can face whanau. I believe I have a lot to offer as a social worker in the future.”

Shane comes from the Hokianga and says she loves working with people.

“The team at Nga Ripo have been great to learn from and the staff have a good cross section of skills. Working alongside the Kaipara community is a valuable experience.”

“Visiting a Japanese school was really interesting and the discipline

Year 13 student Leslie Kingi said “Going to Japan has been the best experience I have ever had. You bond with the most amazing group of people and leave having a newfound respect for the Japanese and their culture.

Twelve of New Zealand’s top motoring journalists passed through the Kaipara as part of a road trip launching BMW’s latest range, taking in the sights and testing the vehicles in different conditions.

BMW corporate communications manager Edward Finn invited the group to travel through the Kaipara, giving them an opportunity to try out seven of their latest range of vehicles.

The annual Kaipara Memorial Service run by Hospice Kaipara will be held at the Lighthouse Function Centre on Friday November 6 at the Dargaville Museum at 5pm.

“The service was originally set up 10 years ago by Dorothy Gabriel at the Holy Trinity Church for those people who had been bereaved throughout the past year and were finding Christmas hard to cope with,” said Hospice Kaipara manager of Volunteer Services Jayne Walker.

“We moved the location to the museum four years ago as it is a lovely setting with the views over the local area.

“There is an opportunity for people to light a candle in remembrance of their loved ones.

“In recent years Ken Cashin has brought along his white pigeons and they have been released from their boxes — this has been a moving moment.

“This year we are going to release balloons and people can write a message on them if they wish. The event is for the anyone to attend and there will be refreshments available following the service.

“We feel it is important to provide the opportunity for people have a special service where they can gather and support each other in

a special environment as we come up to the busy Christmas period. A bereavement support group facilitated

by Josie Scott meets bi-monthly at the nurses’ lounge in the community health building at Dargaville hospital.

Police are urging farmers, business owners and the community to remain vigilant with their security measures in the lead up to summer.

Dargaville resident Michaela Pickering has been a hairdresser for nearly seven years and has made the decision to open her own hair salon which has been her dream since she was a young girl.

Sub Area Commander for Kaipara senior sergeant Rob Huys says theft of quad bikes, two wheeled farm bikes along with tools, chainsaws and fuel are some of the most common kinds of crimes in rural areas.

Police recommend keeping valuable items such as these under lock and key overnight and when no one is on the property.

“Bulk fuel should be secured by way of a good lock, making it as difficult as possible to remove,” he says.

Senior sergeant Huys says crime prevention is one of the main focuses for police and advises people look out for their neighbours.

“If you see something that is out of place call the police straight away on 111 if it is urgent and similarly if you see suspicious vehicles on the property.

The salon is called Revive Hair Studio.

Being born and bred in Dargaville, Michaela completed a two-and-a-half year apprenticeship locally, and says she was always interested in hairdressing so when the opportunity came up for an apprenticeship she grabbed it, and the time has now come to branch out on her own.

“I enjoy helping transform people and making them happy — helping them to feel good about themselves no matter who they are,” said Michaela — also known as Mikki.

“My studio will be a one on one personalised experience for each client with a senior stylist. I am looking forward to this new adventure as it has been a dream for a very long time and I am excited to be putting my personal touch to things.

“No matter what age or style people are, I am able to consult with them and discuss their hair style options. I will be stocking the Vita5 CPR product range which is sulphate and paraben free, and is not tested on animals.

Dargaville Police increase foot patrol during high risk times which they decide upon operationally.

Since 1945 the Northern Wairoa Boating Club have been the custodians of Dargaville’s docking facilities, keen sailors, hosts of regattas and fishing contests. Now, 70 years after the official inception of the club, new Commodore Rodney Wilson is looking to the future, with plans to boost community involvement in the organisation.

The story began in the late years of World War Two, when a generation who grew up on the water began launching their own boats from Clarke’s and Kelly’s Bay. Foundation members of the club set to rebuilding the more seaworthy of the old launches which had been kings of the river in the days of sail and steam.

The club itself came together as disparate interests — boat builders and repairers, fishermen, rowing athletes and more — agreed that a base of operations was necessary in the heart of Dargaville. The first clubrooms were put together in 1949, on a piece of land belonging to the Marine Department, once used for moving logs during the kauri boom. Today, the club boasts

Garden glory awaits ramblers Over the weekend of November 14 and 15, gates of 21 gardens will open to the public for The Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble.

The annual event is a major fundraiser for Mangawhai Kindergarten and Mangawhai Plunket group and attracts visitors to the area from near and far.

“Mangawhai Kindergarten is a nonprofit organisation so without fundraising we would not be able to provide the children with high quality educational resources. We are always so touched by the generosity of the Mangawhai community and how they open up their gardens for this event,” says head teacher of Mangawhai Kindergarten Michelle Fogarty.

“We are also so grateful to the parents who give their time freely to organise this fundraiser and the teachers’ support of the event. Between Plunket and the Kindergarten, most of the young children in Mangawhai will benefit from this awesome Garden Ramble fundraiser.”

The money will be split between the two organisations and community support co-ordinator team leader Shar Lovina says funds raised will make a big difference to local children.

Farmers of New Zealand supports former Fonterra director Greg Gent in sponsoring a resolution to reduce the size of the current board from thirteen to nine members by March 31 next year, to be discussed at the annual meeting of shareholders on November 25.

The reported response by Fonterra Chairman John Wilson hitting back with ‘we need to have a constructive and genuine consultation within the shareholder base, not have imposed a solution by two of our farmers on the back of an envelope’, reveals that ‘we know best, and we just can’t have an idea like this coming from out of the blue and not in our control’.

Chairman Wilson should not be so disrespectful or dismissive of Greg Gent, a director of a number of high profile New Zealand companies, an ex-chairman of the Northland and Kiwi Dairy Companies and who played an integral part in the setting up of the Fonterra structure. His proposition seeks shareholder support to reduce the size of the board and achieve a leaner and fitter Fonterra, more globally competitive and successful.

Wilson’s criticism of this resolution is in fact contrary to a board promise in 2012 to consider development of Fonterra’s governance.

The proposal to reduce the number of directors has been designed to make sure that shareholders retain the power to elect the candidates they regard as the best candidates for the job.

Recruiting new members is an important way to introduce new thought and perspective to debates while avoiding group-think and related risks.

The interests of shareholders will be best served if a board acts with maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

A board that is too large may not give its members the opportunity of participating in discussions and decisions to the best of their ability.
