There were games and a lolly scramble and there was a lot of running around and dancing. “The preschoolers loved showing their moves — they had a blast. This is one of the many activities that happens at the sports complex throughout the year for the community to enjoy.”

p Wellsford Peewee Soccer player Jjay Brewer was awarded player of the year for 2016 at the team’s end of season prize-giving. Club co-organiser Ashleigh Tipene said Jjay played well this year and is sure to be a good soccer player in future years. Peewee Soccer gives children between the ages of two and four years old the chance to get a feel for the field at a young age and burn off some energy at the same time.

Dargaville Primary School gave past student and paralympic silver and bronze medallist Emma Foy a grand welcome back to her old school.

The visually impaired tandem paracyclist and world record breaker and her sighted pilot, Laura Thompson, won the silver in the Women’s B 3,000m Individual Pursuit on the final day with a time of 3:31.569.

Dargaville Primary School students performed a haka in her honour and gifted her a cloak made from paper feathers as a recognition of her achievements.

“I was just like you one time and I got into one of the biggest sporting events in the world,” she told the students. I had a really big goal and I made a plan about how I was going to achieve it and ticked off the stepping stones one by one.”

Emma said there was ‘amazing spirit and vibrancy’ at the Rio Paralympics and she enjoyed being part of it. “Being back

I can really appreciate the excitement, enthusiasm and the support I’ve had, not just from Dargaville but all over New Zealand,” said the 27-year-old athlete.

“It was really cool to be a part of the paralympics and amongst a whole lot of resilient, adaptable athletes and seeing their spectacular achievements.”

Emma will take a break from cycling until next year whilst she considers where to go next with her career.

Her seventh-form soccer coach Steve Smith said when he first met her he was unaware she had a sight impediment as she played so well.

“She is a great role model and never let her disability or anything get in the way of her dreams.”

Emma said it was great to be back at her old school and thanked them all for their support. ¢

New lawyers at Hammonds Law

The Maungaturoto Rest Home and Village has been established for more than twenty years, originally set up with sixteen beds.

The complex has since grown to include 13 rental units and 14 own-your-own units and is set to expand again.

Hammonds Law has a strong, long-standing legal team with Dave Dennis, Ron Warne and Alistair Hammond. They are now very excited to introduce two new graduate lawyers to the firm, Ihapera Paniora and Patrick Rozendaal.

Ihapera, Dargaville born and raised, joined the firm four months ago after spending eight years in Auckland working and completing a conjoint Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Auckland. “Our current facility is now at capacity and we risk being unable to meet future demands or provide for those who need a higher level of care which at present is only available in Dargaville, Waipu or Whangarei,” said chairman of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust Inc Don McKay. “We have developed a ‘plan for the future’ which is staged development to deliver increased services to the community.”

Stage one will see an eight-bed Dementia unit added to the current rest home. Further stages will give the Trust the ability to respond to the increasing

complexity of aged care with a further six rest home rooms and the ability to provide hospital level care as the need dictates.

“The Trust is currently working on obtaining the necessary consents and bank lending support. A public meeting will be held in November or early December where the ‘plan for the future’ may be viewed — the date will be advertised.”

Preparations for the necessary resource consents are well advanced and it is hoped that construction could start early in the new year. ¢

A dog’s day

Dargaville Arts Association is launching a series of workshops at the Dargaville Community Arts Centre at the Old Municipal Building in Hokianga Road, Dargaville. This is an opportunity for the community to be involved in the different aspects of art tutorials on offer.

Only dogs were entered and were judged on leading, calling, grooming and presentation. “It was a great day and I would like to thank all our helpers and Stacey Beattie from the ANZ for her continued support of the school,” said Principal Margie Ormsby.

“We are excited to be holding these lessons in the arts centre for the community,” said workshop manager Heather Carrigan.

“We are proud of the building and what we have achieved so far. You can have all the dreams and wants but now we have progress happening with a programme of workshops which are also available for children on weekends and during school holidays. This means we can expand the art culture across the generations and help encourage and support budding artists.”

The centre is a creative hub available to anyone in the community interested in art.

“We welcome all ages and cultures to join us. When people are in a building, it comes to life — it becomes a living, breathing, wonderful thing for the

community to benefit from. This is a very exciting opportunity. People are so much more talented than they may realise, and often once they try something new they are amazed at what they are capable of achieving.

“We are also interested in hearing from people who would like to offer an art or craft workshop.”

Workshops at this stage include wool spinning for beginners, painting, stained glass, charcoal portrait sketching and a variety of children’s workshops including print making.

The workshops begin from Sunday, November 6.

Kaipara voters have spoken. With the highest voting participation in Northland at over 47 percent, the District has elected a Mayor with a resounding majority. Greg Gent drew support from one side of the district to the other.

Four years ago, growth was dismal.

Sections in Mangawhai were not selling and developers had long faces. Today, sections are selling so quickly that Council is urgently needing to revise its town plan.

Mr Gent has impressive credentials. He has a strong governance background and an outstanding record for leading organisations.

Four years ago, the extension of the motorway to Warkworth and the replacement of the Matakohe bridges was a pipe dream. Today both projects are being prepared for execution.

His challenge now is to form and lead a great team of elected Councillors. I have no doubt that he will succeed, and as a result of this, the Kaipara district will benefit.

Four years ago, Mangawhai Community Park looked like a building site in trouble.

Today, its development is orderly and integrated.

There are impressive and capable members elected from across the district and they will no doubt play their part in developing the Council and supporting the Mayor.

The election marks the end of four years governance by the Commissioners. So, you might ask, how does it feel from the Commissioners’ perspective?

It’s the right time to step aside. The tasks that we needed to attend to four years ago have been addressed.

• The Council organisation is functioning well. An experienced Chief Executive leads the organisation. He is supported by staff who have considerable skills.

• The Council’s financial management is excellent. The audit report for the 2016 Annual Accounts carries no tags.

Budgetary disciplines are in place.

• Council debt has been brought down to $65 million. We have rearranged our debt facilities to drop funding costs.

Many factors have changed the landscape in that four years. Council has played its part, and Commissioners have added value where they have been able.

And now some thanks.

As Commissioners we have been supported throughout our time by Council staff. We acknowledge them for their resilience. They were going through hell four years ago, as angry constituents quite rightly blamed the Council for mismanagement. But it was the governance team and the chief executive that should have shouldered the blame, not the staff reporting to them.

Today, the culture of the organisation has changed, and Council’s processes have improved greatly. We thank all staff and three dedicated Chief Executives, early on Steve Ruru, then Jill McPherson and now Graham Sibery.

• Policy frameworks have been put in place to ensure that decision-making is undertaken in a structured and careful way.

As importantly, we have been supported by forward looking community leaders, those who have rolled up their sleeves to do community work, and thousands of residents and ratepayers who supported us quietly through the years.

Thank you. Your support enabled the Kaipara District Council to recover.

The much anticipated opening of the new Kaurilands Skill Centre Trust residence was celebrated last week in Dargaville with Far North mayor John Carter cutting the ribbon at the ceremony.

The Kaiwaka Fright Night is one of the major events on the Kaiwaka Sports Association’s yearly calendar and this year it will be held on Saturday, October 29.

“The idea to build a house for more independent living came about from studies and the direction of the sector requiring more spacious living,” said Kaurilands general manager Karen Duncan.

“It has become a highlight of the year for the locals and each year the numbers attending get bigger. Last year we had more than 400 people attend and the costume competition brings some interesting characters,” said Kaiwaka Sports Association general manager Cheryl Anderson.

“It is fun for everyone. Bring your bravest friends and walk through a haunted house. Children have a blast at our Fright Night, with our haunted house being the highlight for many. If the screams coming out of the haunted house are anything to go by — the kids have a ‘frightful’ time.”

The event promises ghoulish activities including a photo booth,

lolly scrambles, dancing, music loud enough to wake the dead, face painting, and a halloween-themed supper plate competition.

A haunted house session for primary aged children will be held first before prize giving for the best dressed boy, girl and adult, and for the scariest supper plate.

This will be followed by an even scarier haunted house experience for the high school students and adults.

Doors open at 6.30pm, entry is $5 and free for adults and preschoolers.

There will be plenty of prizes including vouchers for Spookers, Maritime Museum, Whangarei Aquatic Centre and Sheepworld. ¢

New Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction, the Posture: Poor traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A

lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

Labour weekend means the start of the season for surf life saving clubs across the country and Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Surf Lifesaving Club is encouraging more lifeguards to be qualified.

“Mangawhai has seen a huge increase in permanent residents and this means larger numbers on the beach during summer and with tourists and holiday makers visiting. This puts more pressure on the lifeguards to keep a safe watch,” said Surf Lifesaving Club captain Brad Kehoe.

“There is a 10-day training course available spread over the weekends from the beginning of November through to December. This is a great opportunity for those aged 14 years and older to learn life skills that they will take with them through to adulthood.

“Not only will great skills be learnt, but also friendships built, leadership qualities produced and a sense of community achievement established.”

Mangawhai Artists Gallery is hosting an exhibition featuring two mediums, glass and wood, from local artists Pauline Mann, Samantha Minnery, Jakob Gruener and Malcolm Roberts.

Pauline Mann has been fascinated with glass since she was a child and is interested in light and colour.

She graduated from Elam Art School majoring in sculpture, and taught herself to work with glass.

“This exhibition continues to explore the concepts of Goethe and Rudolf Steiner which informed my last solo exhibition in 2006,” she said.

Samantha Minney also has had a lifelong passion for glass that began when she was a child. Whilst she was studying a Bachelor in Design and Visual Arts, Contemporary Craft she rediscovered this love.

“I walked into the ceramics barn and there it happened again, my heart was on fire, the same fire I had felt as a child. Two friends were slumping a glass dome, they opened the kiln at a crucial moment long enough for me to see a glowing mass of molten glass. It took my breath away and for the first time in my adult life I knew that I wanted to make it

all about glass for the next three years of my time studying.

Jakob Gruener was born and raised in Austria and is a qualified carpenter and now works out of his Mangawhai workshop ‘Zimmerman Jack’.

His designs are known for maximising the raw, natural aspects of wood, combining craftsmanship with beauty.

Malcolm Rober ts moved to Mangawhai as a newly-wed with his wife in 1967 and has always loved building things. Nowadays he is finding more time to spend on his woodwork — he has previously built two boats and enjoys building chairs and walking sticks.

“A chair has to look good, be comfortable and support the body,” he says. Malcolm says he enjoys working with a modern flowing design and would have been comfortable in the Art Nouveau era.

The exhibition is running until Monday, October 3, open seven days a week from 10am–3pm. ¢

Alan and Maxine Stringer have been familiar faces in the Dargaville business community for 36 years and are now closing up shop to enjoy their retirement.

Alan Stringer is a qualified electronics technician and established Stringers TV Servicing in August 1980 from scratch before joining the Betta Electrical franchise close to 20 years ago and renaming it Stringers Betta Electrical.

“The customers have been a highlight and I have enjoyed interacting with them and helping them out,” Alan says. “Your customers become your friends.”

Maxine says the highlight for her has been watching the business grow.

“We started from nothing and it has been good to see the long hours and hard work has paid off. We never rested on our laurels and always kept investing in the business until it grew.”

Over the years Alan has had to keep up with the ever-changing nature of electronics and says he doesn’t know of any other industry that has changed so dramatically in so little time.

“We have seen televisions change from being only black and white with one channel to being flat screen with hundreds of channels.”

He is now of retirement age and feels the time is right to move on. The couple hope to spend some of their retirement travelling around the country in a newly purchased caravan. “We have such a beautiful country and we haven’t seen

Technology Brings Kaipara Patients Closer To Care Dargaville Hospital clinical leader Dr Scott Wilson says technology is successfully bridging the distances between Northland’s hospitals.

Partly the distance is physical – at the southwest corner of Northland, Dargaville Hospital is over two hours drive from Kaitaia Hospital, 90 minutes from Bay of Islands Hospital and 50 minutes from Whangarei Hospital. However Dr Wilson said he wants Dargaville “to be right at the forefront of telehealth” and to handle the same level of acuity in patients as Northland’s other Rural Hospitals.

Dr Wilson joined the team in November 2015, bringing experience from rural hospitals across the country, and knows first hand how valuable telehealth can be in managing patients.

“In Dargaville we’ve linked the resuscitation room to the Intensive Care Unit in Whangarei.

“The link is so much more however, it means we have the capability to link to any device on our videoconferencing network and talk to anybody for advice and support.

“The technology enables high sound and image quality, and the ability to remotely control the camera. It’s like having an ICU colleague at the end of the bed.”

In addition to the emergency support, teleheath solutions are also being employed to manage inpatients and in discharge planning.

One of the best examples is with virtual home visits. Home visits are typically performed with allied health staff taking patients home to evaluate their needs. This can involve considerable distance and significant time lost in travel.

Dr Wilson said in a recent example, an occupational therapist was being asked medical questions by family members during the visit which put her in a difficult position. She is now able to take an iPad with her to these types of situations and dial into the hospital videoconferencing system enabling the other members of the multidisciplinary team to accompany her on the visit virtually. This also allows the patient and family to ask questions, and build confidence in the discharge planning process.

Some inpatients are also frail and too unwell to travel to vital specialist appointments. Telehealth enables us to facilitate a virtual clinic between Dargaville and other hospitals in the region. In this way the patient can access the care they need without leaving the building.

“We want no barriers. When it comes to utilising telehealth we’re trying to ask ‘Why not?’ instead of ‘Why?’” Dr Wilson said.

Dr Wilson said the team are working out how to make patients feel comfortable about being filmed during video calls.

“We’re doing training and education around how we explain things. The more we use this, the more commonplace it’ll become.”

Dr Wilson said the support of Northland DHB telehealth programme manager Roy Davidson has been essential.

“Northland seems to have the right people at the moment to make this happen.”

The telehealth resources at Dargaville Hospital couldn’t have happened without Kaipara Community Health Trust and Freemasons Dargaville Pono Lodge fundraising $20,000 which allowed the hospital to buy up-to-date, secure video conferencing and camera technology in 2013. The equipment is on the asset register of the Trust.

THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER EDUCATION TRUST The above education trust was established at the direction of the late Mr Charlie Parker, a wellknown and respected local businessman.

The purpose of the trust is to establish and maintain scholarships which will be known as the THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER SCHOLARSHIPS. Each scholarship is designed to assist any current pupil or pupils of Dargaville High School, who, in the opinion of the trustees, would benefit from further education or study of either tertiary or other nature, or of any recognised course of education or study and who would otherwise be unable to undergo such education or study having regard to the financial resources of that student and/or that student’s immediate family.
