Dargaville’s elected candidate for the NRC seat, Penny Smart, retains her position after Mr Stevenson filed the recount application in the Whangarei District Court. Meanwhile, new Kaipara District Council Mayor Greg Gent and councillors

have been sworn in this week, formally bringing elected democracy back to the district. The event was held at 3pm on Tuesday before friends and family with council CEO Graham Sibery administering the oath of office.

“The swearing in was heralded by a powhiri organised by the Maori Affairs Advisory Group,” said democratic services manager, Sean Mahoney.
