SLSNZ Northern region, chief executive officer Matt Williams, said the northern region was currently finalising the delivery of its services for the 20172018 summer. “Despite considerable and increased support from Northland Regional Council the reality is that the planned council funding available to provide these services will not meet the cost of providing them at all of the beaches that have previously been patrolled, or in some cases over the times the services
have previously been provided,” said Mr Williams. The funding shortfall has occurred in previous seasons before. The Kaipara District Council leaves patrol funding to the NRC, and believes a wealthy benefactor floated the cost of patrolling Bayly’s last summer. This was confirmed by Mr Williams. “The provision of additional patrols at smaller locations such as Baylys Beach has only been possible through additional philanthropic funding support
being secured, season-by-season and not guaranteed.” In the meantime Surf Life Saving Northern Region is seeking support for unfunded services from philanthropic sources and will be engaging with the NRC to do so. The cost of patrol services for 21 days is set by SLSNZ at $29,900, not including capital expenses (for equipment) or logistics costs. continued on page 3 …
