The club opened the season with fully rostered patrols over the long weekend, and between Labour Monday and December l, Mangawhai will provide limited patrols on the weekend as well as its usual 24-hour call-out squad capability, with fully rostered patrols back on the beach for the summer season on December 1.

Many clubs across Kaipara and Northland begin duties over Labour Weekend, although some less busy will start later, with Baylys Beach usually

opening later in December through the school holidays.

Other beaches will be patrolled by regional lifeguards from December 17, on weekends and public holidays.

“Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service has been the beneficiary of recent support from both within and outside the local community,” said club president, John Drucker.

“In addition to receiving one of 17 new Toyota Hilux SR5s being distributed to surf life saving clubs in the Northern

Region, we have also received proceeds from Molesworth Four Square at Mangawhai Heads, and the Mangawhai Community Opportunity Shop Trust.

“We are very grateful for the support from our local community. The Op Shop grant is earmarked to replace some of our club’s 55-year-old wooden joinery, and the Molesworth Four Square funds, will help us train and refresh our lifeguards for this upcoming season. continued on page 3 …

p Volunteers and organisers of the Maungaturoto Trash and Treasure fundraiser for the Otamatea Area St John Ambulance wound up a busy week by dressing in pink-themed clothes in support of the Pink Ribbon appeal by the Breast Cancer Foundation. The annual fundraiser began 35 years ago to raise funds for the ambulance station when it was first purchased and raised more than $10,000 with their sales. “The whole community gets behind the event, and it’s become a really good opportunity for all people to be inclusive,” said organiser, Eileen Parsons. The funds raised will be directed to benefit youth in the area.

p In the 14th Bird of the Year competition run by Forest and Bird, the native wood pigeon has risen as the most popular by public voters. Often described as clumsy and drunk due to overindulging in fruit, the otherwise glamorous bird plays a vital role in dispersing the seeds of native species such as karaka, miro, tawa and taraire across large areas — because they are one of the few birds large enough to swallow the fruit whole. Although the population of kereru is classed as stable, it is in danger of local extinction due to a lack of effective predator control in some areas. It was the clear leader in the poll, with 5,833 votes, ahead of the kakapo with 3,772 and the black stilt coming third with 2,995 votes.

Dementia unit back on track u by Paul Campbell

After technical issues halted work on the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of Maungaturoto’s Riverview Rest Home and retirement village, the new chair of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust, Craig Fergus has his sights on a building resumption next year.

The 14-bed dementia unit at Riverview is to cost $3.6 million. Work stopped last April due to funding,and surveying issues.

“To date $654,000, has been spent on planning, resource and building consents. Now the trust as organised a bank facility of $1.8 million,” said Mr Fergus. “This leaves about $900,000.”

The trust has now organised a fundraising committee with the aim of finding $500,000 from the wider Kaipara community in donations and debentures, while grants are sought for the balance of $400,000.

“A work date for restarting is a little unknown as we have applications out there, but we hope that by April or May we will be back on track.”

Fundraising committee spokesman, Albie Paton, says that to date, $200,000 has been raised, “along with promises of another $50,000. The more money we raise, the less we have to borrow and sooner we can proceed.

“Raising money for major projects in the Kaipara district over the years has always been a challenge, but we have always come through with the money required. The Maungaturoto and Paparoa halls, the Kaiwaka sports

Summer surf patrols begin “In regard to the Toyota Hilux, we have accepted a very attractive threeyear leasing arrangement.

“The vehicle deal, involving Surf Life Saving Northern Region, Grassroots Foundation and Toyota Financial Services is looking to go national next year to benefit all Surf Life Saving Clubs in New Zealand,” Mr Drucker said.

“Mangawhai will use the truck for emergency response, to transport lifeguards and junior surf participants and equipment to training and surf sports carnivals, and for administrative duties.

“We will not have to rely on our volunteers’ personal vehicles to do club business.

We hope to eventually have it set up to provide 24-hour response to

incidents in our local area, but we’ll need to raise funds to outfit it.” As always, Surf Lifesaving New Zealand urges beachgoers to swim smart at the beach.

• Always be cautious of strong currents, tidal changes, or rough conditions.

• Never swim alone.

• When in doubt, don’t go out.

• If lifeguards are patrolling, swim between the flags, and ask the lifeguards about how to have a fun and safe day at the beach.

“We had hoped to use farm stock as a fundraiser, but that has effectively been curtailed by the M Bovis problem.

However, local fundraising is going on at pace, with a major town event scheduled for November. All welcome to attend on November 29.” ¢

Expressions of Interest Northland Farmers The Extension 350 (E350) team is currently seeking Northland dairy farmers to be part of our final clusters – at target, mentor and associate level.

Farmers involved have the opportunity to gain access to specialist support, mentoring and advice as well as being provided with a forum for knowledge and information sharing.

These final clusters are located in the Dargaville/West coast, Bay of Islands and the southern Northland (Brynderwyns to Auckland) regions.

Opportunity still remains for a limited number of associate farmers across some of our earlier dairy and sheep and beef clusters.

E350 is a Northland initiative based on farmer to farmer learning aimed at lifting farm profitability, environmental sustainability and farmer wellbeing.

The project commenced in 2017 and these final dairy clusters will be engaged for 3.5 years. The farmer-focused initiative aims to assist you in achieving your goals and objectives and having open and honest conversations with your farming peers.

CLIMATE CHANGE — WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?

A global, national and regional issue which could impact Northland more than some other regions due to our 3200km long coast line.

Ministry for the Environment released a ‘Coastal Hazards and Climate Change’ guidance paper in December 2017. Go to www.mfe.govt.nz and search in ‘Coastal Hazards Summary pdf’. The next climate change review paper will be published at the end of 2018. Conversations are starting now in Kaipara.

Please attend these advertised meetings and help us with this ongoing conversation.

Some questions to ask could be. What more information do we need to anticipate the effects of climate change, what could be the trigger points regarding whether we protect or retreat and what do we need to do in the short to medium term?

A site better off

Comedians in the country Comedian Wilson Dixon is set to headline an event in Northland designed to get farmers off their farms and laughing.

The people of Northland are resilient and resourceful. We always have been — always had to be.

After all, it was in Taitokerau/ Northland that our earliest arrivals, both Maori and Pakeha, found their new land — their new home — and made it their own.

Very little of that has changed during the generations that followed. We are still left largely to our own devices and up here in the north have a singular way of doing things.

We don’t take kindly to being told how to do things and paradoxically are even less kindly disposed to being ignored.

For that reason, I was delighted to see that a relatively new website (it started in October 2017) has reached its first anniversary and in the process has transformed itself into one of the most dynamic, progressive websites in the north.

I am referring to DargavilleNZ.com, which showcases in the most brilliant way possible all that Dargaville has to offer. Its masthead says it all:

Pay attention!

‘Live and work here, visit here, do business here’. Those three sections encompass just about what every proud community is seeking.

The difference in Dargaville’s case is that on this website they are doing it with panache and pride.

The information presented on the site is both comprehensive and compelling.

The writers have done a great job, and so have the web designers.

I don’t know what the original motivation for the site is — though I can guess — but I do know this: whatever the motivation, this site is yet another example of Northlanders doing it for themselves — without outside help — and doing it well.

I congratulate the site’s owners, Dargaville Community Development Board and the various local companies, trusts and individuals who fund the site.

Farmstrong has announced plans to hold five further comedy shows across New Zealand following its first sell-out show in the Waikato.

The Northland comedy night will be held at the Tangiteroria Hall in Whangarei on Friday, November 2.

“This is awesome news,” said NZ Young Farmers member, Kurtis Danks.

“There’s nothing better than getting off-farm for a bit and having a laugh with a few mates.”

The Northland comedy show will feature popular comedians Nick Rado, Wilson Dixon, John Carr and Tevita Manukia. “This event is for farmers — young and old, rural professionals and

supporters of the rural community,” said Michelle Stevens from Farmstrong.

The show is being supported by the Rural Support Trust, alongside Farmstrong and NZ Young Farmers.

“Farmstrong promotes rural wellness and shares simple tips and advice on looking after yourself,” said Michelle.

“Bringing communities together at events like this is one of the ways we can do that.”

Tickets are $20 each, with all proceeds going directly to Farmstrong.

The Northland Emergency Services Trust annual fundraiser is underway with the hope of beating last year’s record donations of $307,000 as the trust celebrate 30 years in the air.

Principal sponsors Northpower and Top Energy have supported the service since day one, with the first patient being transported by the Northland Rescue Helicopter from Kaitaia hospital in November 1988.

“Each year Northpower and Top Energy match public donations from the appeal dollar for dollar, up to $150,000. This year’s campaign is packed with community breakfasts and school visits, to chopper rides and a children’s book launch. The story of the Northland Rescue Helicopter choppers Lima and Juliet can be purchased online at nest.org.nz,” says chief pilot and CEO, Peter Turnbull.

She had woken up in pain and it was getting worse. Her neck was on fire and achy, and to move her shoulders or head made it even worse.

As much as she tried to hide how serious it was, her husband knew better and got her into the car, headed for the local doctor’s clinic in Wellsford.

On arrival, in the emergency department, the handover was smooth and quick, she says.

“The paramedic on board was amazing – they came to check that I was settled in and ok, as I didn’t have anyone to wait with me. That was really lovely,” she said.

It wasn’t long before the doctor shared their concerns. With the level of pain she was in, combined with the fact that it was still increasing, the doctor knew to call for help. Fearing it was potentially fatal bacterial meningitis, time was something they didn’t have a lot of.

The potential removal of the two pohutukawa trees on Victoria Street adjacent to the PGG Wrightson building is currently a topic of discussion at council, and members of the public are invited to provide their thoughts and comments on the outcome.

“We’ve talked to arborists and the police, and we’re looking at how we can best open up the line of sight for the cameras. We’d like to hear people’s thoughts on it before we make a call,” said council external public affairs manager, Benjamin Hope.

street, and suggested pruning to a low level may be an option.

“For security, it would be better to remove them, but it is nice to have them there. Maybe put smaller shrubs in, we need some beauty in the town,” said staff member Christine Fredrickson.

“They said it was much better for me to go in the rescue helicopter as I needed urgent attention, and a bumpy ride to Whangarei in an ambulance would have been too much to bear,” she says.

What felt like moments later, 26-yearold Kayla was being loaded into one of the Northland Rescue Choppers and preparing for a fast flight to Whangarei where urgent treatment and tests awaited her.

On October 29, residents around the Northern Wairoa River area will recognise the 30th anniversary of the opening of the new bridge. The opening ceremony in 1988 included a walk over by residents, which was arranged by the Dargaville Rotary Club — who also distributed a booklet about the history and sold commemorative medallions.

The previous bridge had sustained pile damage and authorities at the time had serious concerns over its future stability and suitability. The single lane with its two passing bays was no longer practical for the 1,100 vehicles travelling over, and commuters reportedly felt nervous waiting on a passing bay while trucks rolled past.

Built by John C Smith Construction from Rangiora, the 494-metre bridge with its 30m x 6m navigation span was designed to allow barge transport underneath, and planners situated it 10-metres downstream to utilise existing approaches.

During the building process, Mr Smith encountered labour disputes and blacklisting of employees but forged on to complete the project ahead of the expected April 1989 completion date.

“My company are pleased to have completed this project which provides such an important link for this community. It is our hope that you will enjoy this new bridge for many years into the future,” Mr Albert Smith reportedly said. Planning began in 1912 for the original bridge, and after several years

of hold-ups, the first pile was driven in 1921, with the entire construction completed for opening in 1925.

The design incorporated a mechanical lifting span to allow sailing ships to travel further up the river. By 1964, the spans were permanently locked together, the shipping trade having ceased and maintenance being deemed a substantial cost.

The mayor at the time, Mr RE Hornblow, and Public Trustee, Mr JW MacDonald, referred to the great advantages a bridge would offer and was a means of further enhancing the possibilities of the district.

The most likely reason suggested for the chosen site of the bridge was to enable easy shipping trade access to Dargaville township, without the need for navigating under a bridge — as would have been the case if the site at Mt Wesley had been used.

From a practical point of view, the appropriate decisions made by authorities years ago have indeed given us a pearl in the Kaipara crown, connecting communities across the district. ¢

Rescue team ‘whale-come’

Local marine mammal rescue enthusiasts welcomed representatives from Whale-rescue.org, instructor and technical adviser Steve Whitehouse, and co-founder Floppy Halliday, at a training workshop held at the Dargaville Fire Service building. The event presented information valuable in a stranding situation.

The Kaipara District Council Peoples’ Panel is looking for people interested in having a say on local issues and to be a sounding board for future plans, policies and service improvements.

Jason Marris, general manager governance, strategy and democracy, says the peoples’ panel gives all those who live, work and play in the Kaipara area an opportunity to provide feedback on the things that are important to them.

“We want to know what the people of Kaipara think about our services, policies and plans and to hear new ideas about how we can continue on our journey of growing Kaipara together.”

Participants will be asked to provide feedback on a number of varied surveys throughout the year, and the results will be shared so that residents can see how their views are impacting and shaping council policies and services. During the workshop attendees heard information on whale and dolphin behaviours, some reasons for them stranding and how to utilise these behaviours beneficially in a rescue.

Instructor, Steve Whitehouse, discussed the specific care required for stranded marine mammals, the appropriate methods used to successfully refloat them and the reasons not to immediately return them to the ocean.

During a practical session, volunteers learned how to inflate the rescue pontoons and connect mats and lifting devices for moving the animals if necessary.

Some discussion was entered into regarding the recent humpback whale

stranding at Ripiro beach. “It was a fantastic effort by all individuals, just incredible, and a great shame it didn’t have a successful outcome. There may have been a better chance if several pontoons were utilised,” said Steve.

Steve Whitehouse established Whale-rescue.org in 2010 with others, including Dr Ingrid Visser, and wrote the original marine mammal rescue medic manual, as well as designing the rescue pontoons now in use in many countries around the world. A condensed version of his manual is now used in training volunteers with Project Jonah.

The workshop information was also shared with staff from DOC Kauri Coast to better prepare them for potential future rescue attempts. ¢

The recent Angus Bull Sale held at Chris and Karen Biddles’ Te Atarangi Stud, south of Te Kopuru, gained successful results for its vendors with around 150 potential buyers attending from as far as Tolaga Bay, Helensville and Kaitaia.

An enthusiastic team of volunteers from Maungaturoto took part in a rubbish clean up recently, as a part of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful effort to keep communities clean and safe.

A total of 106 yearling bulls were auctioned by PGG Wrightson, and prices ranged between $3,000 and $6,000.

“It was the thirtieth annual sale we’ve had, and the fact we sold everything on offer, indicates we’re doing something right,” said owner Chris Biddles. He also said he was very happy with the day, which reflected a lot of very scientific and hard work at the stud.

“It’s a very labour intensive and scientific breeding process that we undertake, but the sale of the product

and the range of buyers it draws speaks for itself.”

Te Atarangi Stud reports that it is completely free of Mycoplasma bovis, which so far has only impacted one Kaipara feedlot property.

The annual stud sale is widely known for the quality of its stud bulls and keenly awaited each year by breeders.

The stud was also one of the finalists in the 2018 PGG Wrightson Steak of Origin contest, winning gold in the British Angus Best of Breed Class. ¢

Staff from Fonterra Maungaturoto and Farm Source led the way walking from the township to the wharf, filling five bags of recycling plus 10 of general rubbish along the way.

“As far as communities go, Maungaturoto should be really proud as on the whole it’s a very clean and tidy place. I was actually surprised that we picked up as much as we did,” said organiser, Steven Gale.

“I’m really stoked to stop all that rubbish from ending up in the beautiful Kaipara — maybe people simply

don’t realise that when they throw their cigarette butts on the ground in town they end up in the waterways,” he said.

Gale reported that after positive feedback on the day, locals were keen to get involved next time, and while the wharf area on Bickerstaffe Road may have previously been used as an unregistered landfill, the local community is keeping it clean.

Stop men from dying too young — that’s the message from the Movember Foundation ahead of this year’s annual month of awareness and fundraising for men’s health.

Statistics show that on average women outlive men by six years — a stubborn and persistent number, which has not budged despite massive advances in the life expectancy of Kiwis.

This year, there’s also a focus on mental health for men, in an attempt to curb our shameful men’s suicide statistics — it’s time to stop telling blokes to ‘harden up and get over it’ as this attitude is harmful and outdated when trying to cure an illness.

Nevertheless, social attitudes are changing, thanks in a big part to events like the annual November push by the Movember Foundation to raise awareness of health issues predominantly affecting men. The battle against such diseases as prostate and testicular cancer is underway, with researchers and doctors working hard toward a cure.

The fight against suicide and depression is also on, with more

and more men coming to understand that they are not alone and that help is at hand, even in isolated rural communities.

Skate bowl gets nod

Sports achievers to celebrate

Ambitious plans for an Olympic skate bowl at the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) will get $500,000 from the Northland Regional Council.

The Regional Sporting Facilities Rate of $15 each household is for the development of sporting facilities of regional and district benefit throughout Northland.

MAZ is scheduled to receive funding from May 2019. Plans include the completion of an Olympic standard skateboard facility to attract training opportunities for the upcoming games.

The zone already has facilities such as an all-weather multi-sport court, cricket/soccer fields, an outdoor fitness gym, an adventure playground and bike tracks.

Councillor Paul Dimery says submissions received during the Long Term Plan process were “substantially supportive” of new sports facilities.

“We’re so pleased to be able to contribute to these initiatives, which

will benefit the mental health and physical wellbeing of Northlanders and strengthen our communities,” he says.

Sport Northland chief executive, Brent Eastwood, says the approval of the rate is a massive boost for the development of quality sports facilities across the region.

“In the past, it has been very hard work for key Northland facility projects to leverage often only small amounts of district council seed funding through external funding applications.

“This new rate is a game-changer for these projects because sports organisations can now apply to the likes of Foundation North and New Zealand Lotteries in the knowledge that they have secured sufficient Northland funding to be confident of success.” ¢

This year’s Silver Fern Farms Kaipara Sports Awards event is being held at the Dargaville Town Hall on Friday, November 2 at 7pm to recognise sportsmen and sportswomen who are excelling in their individual codes, in addition to presentations in administrative and coaching roles.

Eighty nominations were received

by Sport Northland, from several clubs and schools across the Kaipara District, from which 54 people are now listed in 13 categories. Winners will be drawn by the five judges, Evan Wright, Fern Stevens, Stella Clyde and

representatives from Sport Northland and Te Tai Tokerau.

Also attending will be World Champion and four-times New Zealand Champion drifting driver, Gaz Whiter, with his car on display. Gaz has recently returned to New Zealand after winning a world competition against 11 other elite drivers, also representing their respective countries.

Farmers and landowners are being urged to seek advice from rural fire officers before burning off standing vegetation or waste after a recent out of control fire took hold.

“Even though this area is currently in an open fire season and permits are not required, we urge anyone considering a burn-off to get in touch with us first. We can provide free advice to help people manage the risk of controlled burns,” said Fire and Emergency New Zealand Northland deputy principal rural fire officer, Rory Renwick.

The Tinopai Voluntary Rural Fire Force was called to a scrub fire near Arapaoa Road, which had jumped a fire break into trees and scrub, eventually burning most of a 50-hectare area.

The emergency call was placed by a nearby resident, Valerie Bushell of Silverhill Alpacas, who sighted flames rising higher than the trees less than one kilometre from her property, and crews

from Ruawai, Paparoa and Dargaville, were called to assist, including two helicopters with monsoon buckets.

“Thankfully I was at home — my initial concern was what would have happened to my alpacas and my dog if the fire brigade hadn’t been called, so I had an escape plan worked out for them and myself.

“It was an adrenaline rush for sure,” said Valerie.

“At least four people have been killed in land clearing burns in New Zealand over the past 10 years. This incident could have resulted in another fatality,” Mr Renwick said.

p Dargaville visitors, Margaret and Bill Hardy from Auckland, have often driven through the town so chose to stay a couple of nights recently, to have a look around. During their visit, they were amazed to be told of the two masts off the sunken vessel Rainbow Warrior at the Dargaville Museum, which brought back memories from 1985. They had been on a boat trip in the Bay of Islands and saw two Frenchmen on a yacht. Continuing their journey back through Auckland, they stopped to view the Greenpeace vessel in the harbour before returning home — the next day the ship was sunk at its berth, and the couple linked the incident to the two Frenchmen they had previously seen.

The future is electric. That’s the message from automobile manufacturers, from those who make city runabouts all the way up the rarefied world of hypercars. Powerful, efficient and with zero carbon emissions thanks to a lack of a tailpipe, electric transport is no longer in the realm of ‘early adopters’ — it’s taking to the streets.

It will all come right back to you. In fact, getting aboard an e-bike combines a little thrill with a lot

of nostalgia, a heap of practicality and a wonderful excuse to sail past the petrol pumps grinning ear to ear. At roughly one-twentieth the cost of an electric car, it’s easy to see why the revolution is gaining momentum. ¢

Manuka industry at potential risk u by Jill Dickie

Experts are expressing concern that the government scheme to plant large numbers of manuka trees around New Zealand may compromise the potency, and therefore the value, of wild manuka properties.

From his research of New Zealand manuka, Unitec associate professor, Peter de Lange, suggests there are at least three different types of manuka, each with possible different properties.

There are very different chemicals in each, which have potential as medicinal use, and de Lange said the safest way to ensure qualities are kept is to only plant manuka where the seeds have been eco-sourced, meaning seeds have been sourced from the same area as where seedlings will be planted.

“It’s inevitable but if you start mixing up manuka, and planting Northland seedlings in East Cape, you’re going to dilute the future,” he said.

Under the planting scheme, landowners were given free trees to be planted between July and September 2018, and within three weeks of the offer, 185 applications were received.

As a result, hundreds of thousands of seedlings are being prepared, many of which are a hybrid high-performing type, selected and bred based on their flowering density, sugar content and levels of chemicals, which

contribute to the antibacterial quality of manuka honey.

“There were no eco-sourced ones at all. Eco-sourced would have required considerably more time, so we had to get all the manuka seedlings that we could lay our hands on really,” said chief executive officer for Manuka Farming New Zealand, Stephen Lee. “We matched the location to the provinces of the stock. There would be a little bit of a crossover, but you wouldn’t put something from Northland in Wairarapa or Taranaki. There was a matching process,” he said.

The concern of scientific experts is that the effects of such crossovers have not yet been well researched, and large-scale planting of non-eco-sourced manuka into areas where wild manuka is growing does represent an element of risk.

“There could be properties found in different types of manuka in different parts of the country, and you wouldn’t want to lose that genetic resource,” said associate professor at the University of Otago, Dr Janice Lord. ¢
