Surf life savers were back on beaches over Labour Weekend, and Mangawhai Surf Club members were out in force and newly mobile, after receiving one of 17 new patrol vehicles distributed to clubs in the Surf Life Saving Northern Region.

The club opened the season with fully rostered patrols over the long weekend, and between Labour Monday and December l, Mangawhai will provide limited patrols on the weekend as well as its usual 24-hour call-out squad capability, with fully rostered patrols back on the beach for the summer season on December 1. Many clubs across Kaipara and Northland begin duties over Labour Weekend, although some less busy will start later, with Baylys Beach usually

opening later in December through the school holidays. Other beaches will be patrolled by regional lifeguards from December 17, on weekends and public holidays. “Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service has been the beneficiary of recent support from both within and outside the local community,” said club president, John Drucker. “In addition to receiving one of 17 new Toyota Hilux SR5s being distributed to surf life saving clubs in the Northern

Region, we have also received proceeds from Molesworth Four Square at Mangawhai Heads, and the Mangawhai Community Opportunity Shop Trust. “We are very grateful for the support from our local community. The Op Shop grant is earmarked to replace some of our club’s 55-year-old wooden joinery, and the Molesworth Four Square funds, will help us train and refresh our lifeguards for this upcoming season. continued on page 3 …
