Sir Jerry presented Dargaville identity Barry Searle with a Queen’s Service Medal for services to marine conservation, awarded in last years’ New Year’s honours list.

Mr Searle had been unable to travel to Government House to receive it, and instead Sir Jerry presented the medal in his own living room, in the presence of friends and family.

Mr Searle has spent decades campaigning to protect toheroa stocks on the west coast’s Ripiro

He has also served as chief fire officer with the Te Kopuru Volunteer Fire Brigade, president of the Northern Wairoa Civilian Maimed Association and has volunteered at the Dargaville Museum.

He and his wife Robyn have selfpublished a dozen books on local history, including one with photographs and histories of the old baches in Glinks Gully. “I feel incredibly humble,” said Mr Searle. “It’s great to have

Sir Jerry also travelled to Ngunguru to present a QSM to pioneer scuba diver and marine conservationist, Wade Doak.

Royal honours come home The exhibition celebrates the life of Joseph Gordon Coates, at The Kauri Museum.

Sir Jerry said of New Zealand’s first native-born prime minister: “We have him to thank for institutions like the Reserve Bank, and portions of New Zealands hydroelectric scheme and road transport schemes.”

Mr Coates, Kaipara MP and a war hero with a double Military Cross, left a long legacy of service after growing up on the family farm, Ruatuna, at Hukatere near Matakohe. He represented the Kaipara electorate for 32 years before dying suddenly at Parliament House in 1943.

“He is rightly considered one of Northlands and New Zealand’s favourite sons and it’s brilliant to see his career, his life and his achievements and attributes recognised in this way,” Sir Jerry said.

The exhibition includes a huge range of memorabilia from the museum’s collection. the Coates family, and other sources. Film and audio archives are featured and it is supported by corporate and government funding after work began two years ago under former museum CEO, Bet Nelley, with the recently appointed CEO, Lisa Tolich, completing the project. ¢

Netball centre applauds Sportsville plan u by Colin Patterson

Northern Wairoa’s largest participation sport has welcomed a proposal to establish a Sportsville complex at Dargaville’s Memorial Park.

The $2 million complex will bring together sports such as soccer, netball, rugby and tennis in one sports hub.

Progress now depends on a management plan for Memorial Park which is currently being prepared by Kaipara District Council, and grant applications that are expected to be lodged early next year.

Northern Wairoa Netball Centre president Darlene Lang says the proposal looks good. “We’re happy to get new courts. And having one hub will be good.”

She says the centre has 55 teams, with most games being played on courts at Dargaville High School and Dargaville Intermediate. But there is also a winter league, with games played indoors at the Dargaville High gymnasium.

The proposal will be funded by a combination of grants, fundraising and contributions from sporting bodies. Ms Lang says the Northern Wairoa Netball Centre has cash to put in when the time is right.

The council says work on drafting the management plan is continuing. Once the draft is finished it will be put out for public consultation and submissions will be called for. ¢

The popular Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble returns for its eleventh year this November.

The event is a major fundraiser for children in the local community, with money raised going towards operational expenses for the Mangawhai Kindergarten and the Kaiwaka/ Mangawhai Plunket Society.

For the past decade, the Garden Ramble has attracted loyal participants from as far afield as Auckland and Kerikeri, as well as the local area, and this year, a total of 20 properties will be on show, including old favourites as well as nine new gardens.

The 2014 ramble has also attracted the support of several local artists who will exhibit their artwork at selected gardens.

Mangawhai Kindergarten head teacher, Michelle Fogarty, says the annual fundraiser helps to ensure that the kindergarten can continue to provide high quality educational resources.

“We are always so touched by the generosity of the Mangawhai community and how they open up their gardens for this event and we are also grateful to the parents who give their time freely to organise this fundraiser. Between Plunket and the Kindergarten, most of

Graham Warmington, who died in March aged 70, stipulated in his will that if any money was left after his home was sold, the surplus would go to Dargaville Museum.

Last week Mr Warmington’s cousin Brian was able to present museum president Don Elliott with a cheque for $46,000.

Brian Warmington said his cousin worked on the wharves and did a lot of other jobs, include bridge building for Rope Construction.

He had no known connection with the museum, although was a friend of Ron Halliday who did. Mr Elliott says the bequest came as a shock. “It’s a great gift for the museum.”

He says the money will be used to build a shelter to protect the museum’s

collection of old boats and dinghies, some of which are 80 years old.

“It’ll be called the Graham Warmington boat shelter.” Currently they are stored outside and are exposed to the elements.

He says a shelter is very appropriate as the Warmington family has historic links to boats on the Northern Wairoa River.

Museum manager Pene McKenzie says work will start as soon as building consents have been obtained.

While there is no timeline, the aim is to have the shelter finished before next winter.

Mr Elliott says the Warmington bequest will be kept in a special fund.

Any money left over will be used for special projects within the museum. ¢

Proceeds from the event will go to the museum’s lighting project. “The lights in the maritime hall are 30 years old and need replacing,” says Ms McKenzie.

Kids, teachers and parents from Tangiteroria, Tangowahine, Paparoa, Matakohe, Maungaturoto and Wellsford all took part in their school’s annual agricultural day over the weekend. After many weeks and countless hours of dedication and hard work, the time came to parade their pets and enjoy some time in the spotlight in front of family and friends. Calf club days have been a fun fixture of the Kiwi rural calendar for over a century — and it’s easy to see why.

Kaurilands Skills Centre is celebrating its 25th anniversary next March and wants all its supporters and sponsors to be part of the party.

Kaurilands general manager Karen Duncan says the jubilee will take place on March 21, 2015. Festivities will start with an open day at the Kaurilands site near Tokatoka. In the evening there will be a dance and supper at the RuawaiTokatoka Memorial Hall.

“We’re contacting anyone and everyone who has had anything to do with Kaurilands,” says Ms Duncan.

“There are thousands of people. There are people who dug the land for the first house. There are painters and builders — so many people have helped over the years. We wouldn’t have been able to do what we do without them.”

Kaurilands was established by Mike Mudford and a group of fellow former IHC staff in 1990 to provide supported accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities. At first,

Kaurilands operated from a house in Dargaville. But it moved to its current rural site in the late 1990s.

Ms Duncan says Kaurilands has grown over the years. “We started with four people. We now have 19 residents living here.

The founders worked for nothing. We now have 20 paid staff.”

Kaurilands has become well known for having the Kaipara District Council refuse contract.

But in 2007 the rubbish collection business was passed to a subsidiary company, Kaipara Refuse Ltd, although Kaurilands residents still do most of the collection work.

The newest store in Dargaville’s main street offers a new twist on shopping for that latest addition to your wardrobe.

For the past two weeks preparations have been underway behind the doors of what used to be Dormavilla on Victoria Street, transforming the space into a cornucopia of one-off finds and interesting styles.

New owners Simone and Natasha are the mother and daughter team behind Witch Clothing — named for their pointy-hatted mascot, still in transit from Christchurch.

Simone points out that this is a very different concept from the opportunity shops already established and well patronised in Dargaville.

Instead, the Witch Clothing ideal is to hand-pick interesting, quirky, largely unused items from around the country, trucking them in to keep the selection on the shelves fresh and varied.

This could mean anything from designer label beachwear to men’s suits, with sizes to fit everybody and a range spanning kids to seniors, even discerning teenagers. Witch Clothing was very successful in Christchurch, with whole pallet-sized sacks of new finds plucked from Simone’s sources and sent out to the public. Now that the family are together in the Kaipara, it was a logical extension to open the doors in Victoria Street.

Those familiar with the popular ‘retro boutiques’ of Auckland will be right in their element, but Simone and Natasha promise something else as well — good value for

Ideally with tomatoes you should not plant out all of them at once — better to plant a few now, wait a month and plant a few more, in fact right up until the New Year.

By the end of November you can just pinch off the laterals from existing plants then strike them as a cutting.

So having dealt to tomatoes, why not branch out — and involve the kids too.

Seeds are available in infinite varieties, and there’s nothing like seeing new life emerge from the soil.

Labour Weekend is traditionally the right time to get some plants from the garden centre and get down to the dirt.

This time, I’m looking specifically at tomatoes. They are such a summer standby, with a myriad recipes, from salads to soups and pretty much all cuisine in between.

Tomatoes are usually easy to grow and a few plants provide an adequate harvest for most families. The quality of fruit picked in the garden when fully ripe far surpasses anything available on the market, even in season. Many varieties are available, from traditional stock to hybrids. Garden centres offer a large selection, so work out your needs, then choose the varieties best suited to your intended use and growing plan.

RAISE THE ROOF THIS SUMMER! The pool is located next to Selwyn Park and is Northland’s only 50-metre long swimming championship pool.

Kauri Coast Community Pool Trust chairman Vern Stevens says the pool is a great community asset that proves its worth over summer. “We’d like more people to use it. We had a nice hot summer last year.”

The pool is managed by a specialist facilities company, Community Leisure Management (CLM). Opening hours are from 6am to 7pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10am to 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday and from 12pm to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, a proposal for Sport Northland to take over the running of the facility is still being considered.

The proposal arose after the trust indicated it wished to withdraw from its role, saying as a voluntary group it did not have the resources to oversee the pool’s operation.

There have been discussions between the council and Sport Northland with a view for it to take over running the pool. But no agreement has been reached.

Even if the parties do come to an agreement, the current arrangements will continue for the 2014/15 summer. ¢

The days of pushing a mechanical rotary mower across acres of lawn are far behind us.

Now it’s quite an arms race out there, with lawn-care engineers vying to create the perfect machine to tackle the maintenance of even the wildest back yard.

Victa have been crafting mowers for Kiwi lawns for over five decades, and though they began in New South Wales, they have been embraced on this side of the Tasman for their powerful, nononsense approach to mower design.

The SPX series is no exception, drawing on Victa’s alliance with parent company Briggs and Stratton to put more power at the driver’s command.

That power comes from a Briggs and Stratton professional series flat v-twin — an engine with a similar layout to that found in a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Here, the two cylinders are laid out horizontally, and produce an ample 22 horsepower, driving a wide, 1.17 metre triple bladed cutting deck.

This means less passes to cut the average lawn down to size, but Victa’s engineers haven’t stopped with simply beefing up the SPX’s grunt. As very few lawns are flat, cricket-pitch expanses

‘Living water’ is our future Water quality is a matter of huge importance to farmers the length and breadth of the country, particularly those engaged in dairying.

It is currently to the forefront of agricultural industry attention, and a good example of action underway can be found on the huge Kaipara Harbour, the country’s largest body of water, 947 square kilometers, and virtually enclosed by land, almost all dedicated to farming.

The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group was established in 2005 to promote integrated management and inter-agency coordination in the care of the harbour and its catchment.

During the development of the Fonterra and DOC Living Water programme five catchments were selected across New Zealand including the Kaipara.

Fonterra’s Project Manager, Living Water Partnership,Tim Brandenburg offers this insight into the overall project.

“Both organisations agreed that they needed to choose places that challenged, and would potentially expand the boundaries of knowledge and best practice. The Kaipara Harbour Catchment is simply massive and it has large farming and forestry sectors that contribute significantly to its regional economies.

“The co-operative has committed $20 million across the five sites over 10 years and partnered with DOC to combine knowledge and experience of land and water management, to address biodiversity enhancement and water quality challenges.

“Historic and widespread forest clearance and wetland drainage have removed the buffering and mitigation services that these components of a natural ecosystem provide, especially during extreme weather events. The Living Water programme is focused on providing farmers with the options and best practice to build, restore or enhance natural areas on their land and connect that effort to other public or private natural areas wherever possible.

“There is also a well understood correlation between the presence of wetlands and good water quality and so Living Water will also develop best practice examples of the creation of new wetlands and the restoration of existing ones.

“Working out what works and what doesn’t is critical to demonstrating that the Fonterra farmer shareholders investment is landing in the right place and so we’ll be measuring the effects of our projects. That will add to the efforts of others like DairyNZ, Landcare Research and NIWA, but will also help farmers tell their story to a much wider audience with the benefits of sound science to back them up.

“Individual farmers are fencing waterways, meeting effluent management standards, improving their soils, and paying much more attention to the quality of water coming on to their farms and leaving it.”

The foregoing must resonate with all of us in the industry across the country, as a blueprint to our future. ¢
