An ‘instant wharf’ attempt by Paul Campbell
With the countdown well and truly underway for Maungaturoto’s 150th anniversary celebrations November 1-3, a vital link to the event will be subject to a record-breaking effort.

While resource consent and all the red tape involved has been dealt with, the substantial wharf to replace the original settler’s landing on the upper reaches of the Otamatea is still a pile of building material, some miles from the riverbank. Much of the timber has been sponsored by Kaipara individuals and businesses “So with the time frame so tight we are trying something that’s probably never been done before,” says 150th chairman, Albie Paton. “An instant wharf.” The piles and decking for the wharf will be assembled off-site, and the entire structure prefabricated. “We are looking for some skilled help and tools when we assemble all the bits and pieces at Tim McGill’s Barnbuilding site on Mountain Road on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 October, and then the setting in of the piles and assembly stage at the landing site in Bickerstaffe Road on Saturday 19.” “We are asking volunteers to bring gloves and earmuffs as we are working with timber machinery, and tools and socket sets will be needed for the bolting up phase. We trust we’ll get some good help on something that has probably never been tried.” The completed wharf will be the jumping off point for a pioneer landing and parade and three days of celebration of the original Albertland settlers arriving at Maungaturoto, after they rowed up the river from Kaiwaka.

“Registrations are flooding in and a year of planning and hard work for many people in the town is about to bear fruit,” said Mr Paton. “We would welcome assistance on the wharf and I can be contacted on 09 431 8148 or 0274 949 448, while Tim McGill is on 021 487 055.”
