After a series of public meetings held by the Kaipara District Council on planned new public toilets at Pahi, residents rejected any action encroaching on public use and enjoyment of the wider reserve area. Now the council’s infrastructure strategic planner Mark Schreurs has told locals work will proceed on resource consent for a green foreshore area drip field.

He wrote: ‘We feel there is no need for a further meeting. The next step being to work with mana whenua on resource consent prior to construction starting.’

Pahi resident Owen Stevens has led opposition to the council plan, writing to Mr Schreurs and the new mayor, among others, suggesting, in part, an interim alternative system utilising the existing drip field of the old toilet facility at the beach.

Another long-term resident, Ken ‘Honk’ Sheppard, agrees that “work must not start and money be wasted before any number of issues are resolved, and this involves listening to those who live at Pahi and know how the reserve is used.

“A new drip field will be off limits, including peak camping ground demand, vehicles and boat trailers. Who wants to picnic with kids playing and running around on a toilet drip field by the beach?”

Mr Stevens has written to the council: “If it takes three years to complete the

project, so be it, but you must take the needs and views of the locals along with you. As it is, the attitude expressed at the recent meeting shows an arrogant and flippant disregard for the views of local Pahi residents and reserve users and the wider ratepayers of Kaipara.”

The chair of the Pahi Reserve Society, which administers the area and the Pahi Beach Holiday Park, Alan Reynolds, says the council stand is “on a par with other issues. The children’s playground has once again been closed because of the danger of dead branches in two socalled ‘significant ancient trees’, with no remedial council action.

“The iconic and listed Moreton Bay fig at the reserve has been in dire need of arborists’ care for many months. Despite advice of this, there’s been zero action from council. So the drip field debacle is not all that surprising, I suppose.

We can only hope some sanity will finally prevail.” ¢

Mayor’s Message Kia ora and hello, This is my first message as your Mayor. It is very humbling to be asked to represent you all. It’s a deep responsibility that I take seriously.

I’ll be writing to you each month to keep you up to date with what’s going on in the region.

Last week the other Elected Members and I were officially sworn in. The oath we swear is to serve the best interests of the whole district, regardless of the ward we represent, and that is what I intend to do.

I have already spent some time in Wellington getting to know the new Mayors from other councils and learning the finer processes of working in Local Government. I enjoyed meeting other Mayors who share common goals and challenges, and establishing some good relationships with them. I expect we’ll continue to work together to share ideas and experiences that will best serve our respective districts.

It will be the director’s third feature-length film project, and will be shot locally in late November. Support from the creative community is making this project happen.

We’ve committed to work together for the benefit of the whole district.

Already we have a number of issues which, as a council, require careful consideration and response. That includes the proposed Local Government reform and an alternative for three waters put forward by the Mayors of Auckland, Christchurch and Waimakariri, which I support wholeheartedly.

I acknowledge the economic challenges many of us are facing are difficult - for businesses and individuals. Already a lot of you have made contact to congratulate me, and to discuss local issues. I have done my best to respond and am keeping in touch as much as possible.

Thank you all for your support and confidence and I look forward to championing Kaipara’s interests.

The Kaipara District Council has been asked to join a landmark agreement with the three other new councils in Northland, working together in what they describe as a ‘time of unprecedented change’.

Northland’s branch of the National Party will not announce a candidate to contest the ‘battleground’ constituency until early in 2023, as membership numbers swell.

The so-called Triennium Agreement covers the entire three year term of all elected councils, and proposes to bind together the Northland Regional Council under chairperson Tui Shortland, Whangārei District Council under mayor Vince Cocurullo, Far North District Council led by Moko Tepania in common cause with the KDC. That cause is the betterment of Northland as massive changes to infrastructure services, local governance and resource management are pushed forward by the government.

‘The parties acknowledge that the 2022 to 2025 triennium will be a time of unprecedented change for local government,’ states the introduction to the document the KDC was briefed on this week by governance adviser Gavin Dawson.

The agreement was developed with input from former Mayor Jason Smith and his administration. Being part of it helps facilitate the work of several other collaborative bodies, such as Northland’s Mayoral Forum and Chief Executive’s Forum.

Joint participation in committees such as the Northern Transport Alliance, the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group and the Joint Regional Economic Development Committee is also

made possible with the framework of the Triennium Agreement. Good outcomes from all of these collaborative groups have proven their worth. For example, roading quality has been greatly advanced due to NTA research in the last council term.

Mayor Craig Jepson and his councillors have been presented with the agreement draft. They will study its clauses closely before becoming signatories alongside their regional colleagues in governance. ¢

“We have seen a tremendous increase in membership,” says local National Party chairperson Iain Huddleston. “This year, we have been very active, and we have seen new members coming in from across the social spectrum. It is a total mix; urban and rural, young and old.”

Membership numbers, in the high 600s earlier this year, have now surpassed 1,500, in what Mr Huddleston says is a swell of people wanting change.

“I think, also, that our two main leaders are very attractive to the public, as there is a huge sense of disillusionment out there,” he says.

Northland is currently held by Labour’s Willow-Jean Prime and is also the home territory of Matt King, former National incumbent and leader of the current DemocracyNZ party. Prior member of parliament for Northland, Winston Peters, has also made headlines recently with a return to the public spotlight.

A strong contender for this ‘swing’ seat may have to face up to all three of the above. One of the contenders who has stepped forward for the job as National’s candidate is former

With membership burgeoning, a decision on whether he or one of the other worthy candidates being considered by the party will feature on blue electoral hoardings come election time. A decision will be made by March as to who has secured the candidacy. ¢

Why should I review my will? u by Natalie Robinson

As life changes, so do your circumstances, assets and wishes. A thorough and up-to-date will ensures your wishes are respected when you die, and simplifies the administration of your estate for your grieving loved ones.

Having children, getting married, or separating from your partner all impact your will. Getting married automatically renders your will invalid, but separating from your partner does not. If you had previously included your ex in your Will, they would be entitled to receive that gift from you, unless you update your will. Acquiring significant assets, such as a new property or an inheritance should also prompt you to think about your will.

These days, families can be complex, meaning previous relationships, children, multiple properties or family trusts all need to be considered when making your will (or else it may leave your will wide open to be challenged, a stressful process for all involved). It’s also useful to consider non-financial matters, such as who will look after your children and pets, what happens to your treasured personal effects, and your funeral arrangements.

Your will also helps to facilitate the ‘estate administration’ process when you die, by requiring you to appoint an executor(s) and trustee(s). The executor’s job is to administer the estate (eg act as a contact person, apply for probate). Once all of your assets have been realised, and the discretionary role of the executor has finished, the trustee(s) hold the assets on trust until the assets are distributed in accordance with your will to the beneficiaries. Usually, the same person or people will be both executors and trustees.

You can appoint anyone as your executor/trustee, and you can appoint more than one, but it’s important to consider your choice carefully. The person/people you trust to carry out this important role may change over the years.

When someone dies without a will, it often takes significant time, effort, and cost to deal with their estate.

said Mr Peters. “New Zealanders have met many challenges and sometimes the terror of war. We have met economic crises in the past. With unity, we dealt with them all, survived, and went on to prosper as a country.”

“However, today in New Zealand we face economic, social, political and constitutional dangers, many selfinflicted, from recent political decisions.”

In the sights of the veteran campaigner are issues such as the cost of living, the widening gap between the rich and the working poor, pre-export manufacturing and co-governance.

Two very big issues were reserved for particular attention — emissions trading on farms and Three Waters. On the first, Mr Peters was vehement that farmers were getting a raw deal.

“New Zealand farmers have the lowest climate footprint in the world now,” he said. “For every cow that we lose, our overseas competitors will replace it.”

As for Three Waters and its central controversial co-governance content, Winston Peters says that a referendum is already planned and that referendum will be the general election. ¢

A detailed history of the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club’s formation and progress during 21 years, from a working capital of $30 for stationery to its multimillion-dollar complex at Harding Park today, is being recorded in a new book by club founder Bruce Galloway.

Featuring a collection of milestone photographs and the achievements of a large number of Dargaville and wider Kaipara residents, it follows Mr Galloway’s recent autobiography on running 11 farm properties before taking up his pen.

“In 2002, I put several ads in the newspaper for anyone interested in forming a vintage machinery club, and six men came to the first meeting,” Bruce says. “Those present were Basil Cole, Peter Fisher, Eddie Yakich, Eric Burges, David Dreardon and myself.

Peter started taking minutes in a notebook and asked us to put $5 each in the kitty to buy stationery.“ Extensive work and fundraising p grew rapidly to encompass an expanding community of members and supporters, which saw the club open new premises in August 2011.

“It dawned fine and clear with a gentle breeze that was just enough to lift the array of flags Steve Gent had erected around the grounds,” writes Bruce.

“All these flags represented 10 countries of origin for the collection of vintage machinery housed within the club. There were messages from out of

town members and visiting club members from Hauraki, Manawatū, Otorohanga, Whangārei with the six original members.”

Now known officially as Kaipara Heritage Machinery Dargaville Inc, it has collected a huge array of restored vintage machinery amid a still-growing collection and has become a major visitor attraction in Dargaville. The official history is due in the new year. ¢

Dargaville’s Silver Fern Farms site has a new interim site manager, as Laurie Davies comes from a processing management role in Te Aroha to replace well-known site manager Lance Warmington.

The newly elected Kaipara District Council has stated a broad interest in cost cutting to reduce rates, but one area it cannot change the figures is in councillors’ remuneration.

Lance is moving on to a role as operations improvement manager, travelling to Silver Fern Farms sites around the country but retaining his home in the community he loves. Laurie brings to the role 48 years in the business and close ties to Dargaville t h ro u g h h i s p rev i o u s management roles within Silver Fern Farms and sports.

“It’s always been my way of thinking that you take care of the business, as that pays the wages. Webster Family Butchery’s opening day is happening now at 63 Victoria Street in Dargaville, with plenty on offer.

“Come on in and say hi and see what is on offer. We want to cater to many people, and that is our focus for the next little while. We know that the cost of good quality food has gone up a lot, and we will make sure to pass specials on to people,” says owner Teenica Webster.

The Websters have owned other butcheries across Northland, including Maungatūroto Butchery and Coopers Beach Butchery. Last year, the couple sold their Coopers Beach business and moved back to the Kaipara. Owner and second-generation butcher Kyle Webster was born in Te Kōpuru Hospital

and raised in Kaipara. He is passionate about his craft, has an expansive knowledge of gourmet items and chooses simple-to-cook products.

“My father-in-law Ken will also work part-time in the new business venture along with our son Jacob who is doing his apprenticeship — the whole family is involved.”

Teenica says the family trials most of what Kyle serves and that it is a win if he cooks something that their various palettes enjoy.

The opening day had balloons for children, gourmet taste-testers and

opening specials for the community to enjoy.

“It is awesome to be back in Kaipara, and we have settled in well.

Our families are from here, and the community has been amazing and incredibly supportive.”

Dr Maggie Buxton from Awhiworld is creating a community pop-up lab hosted upstairs at Muddy Waters Gallery on November 24, from 4pm until 7pm.

“It provides an opportunity for people to ask questions about creative technology and how it can support their jobs, hobbies and creative practices,” Awhiworld founder Maggie says.

The Dargaville lab will demonstrate augmented reality, 3D printing and 3D projection. It’s the first portable lab run

by Awhiworld and the latest in a series of labs created in Whangārei.

“This is the first lab we have taken on the road. The purpose is to give people an insight into creative technology, particularly those who work in the creative industry or hobbyists.

“It’s a chance for youth to expand their knowledge and ask questions about the creative technology sector in Northland.

It’s also a networking opportunity to connect with like-minded people and experts in the field — we may learn from them and what they are doing.”

“I approached John Pickworth at the Dargaville Arts Association because we have a successful longstanding collaborative partnership with him and that group. So we saw it as an opportunity to support that area.

Saint Joseph’s School hosted a well-attended quiz night in late October, with brain-teasing questions raising money for out-of-theclassroom experiences.

The Northland Business Excellence Award winners were announced at the Awards Presentation and Celebration Evening on November 4.

“It was a good turnout, and a lot of fun,” said organiser Patrick Bourke as the quiz concluded and some of the twenty teams who took part selected their prizes.

This prize pool came courtesy of a huge effort by local businesses and even some supporting families, who gave to ensure there was a treasure trove to match the trivia. The school wishes to thank all those who helped bolster the prize pool and the dedicated work of Patrick, who has put together similar quiz nights for many consecutive years.

The money raised by the 20 competing teams, and from a pair of rapid-fire raffles, will go toward providing extra learning

opportunities outside the classroom for the Saint Joseph’s School students. Field trips, nature rambles, and time spent on extracurricular learning are a valuable part of education. It’s community events like these that make such fun excursions and adventures possible, enriching the school year.

When the scores were tallied, the final victors of the 2022 quiz night were the ‘mediaeval warriors’ of Wolfsblood Manor, named for the fictional setting of Dargaville Little Theatre’s recent interactive murder mystery. They and 12 other teams topped the scoreboard and selected prizes to take home. ¢

Hybrid cars are currently receiving a rebate from the government, so what about those farmers who early-adopt hybrid tractor technology?

Purely electric tractors may be a feature of future farming, should our generation capabilities and capacity evolve alongside e-vehicle technology.

However, a proven method of saving fuel and adding traction is already out there. The concept of dieselelectric drivetrains goes back to the days of early submarines, which used diesel engines to charge batteries for underwater running.

Thus, the idea has been tested in the harshest conditions.

When one of John Deere’s large tractor development team, Roberto Javellana, was asked about the future of high-horsepower machines in 2019, he was adamant that hybrid power was the way ahead.

When quizzed on the next big advancement from Deere, Javellana said: “A hybrid driveline. John Deere is already using a hybrid driveline in the popular 944K wheel loader.

In this machine, a diesel engine drives a hydraulic pump, but also two electric generators. We will probably introduce this technique in agricultural machines as well in the future.”

Landini in Italy has already released one new form of hybrid that doesn’t use its diesel mill to fire up a bank of batteries. The technology and techniques of off-road racing share a common crucible, where drivers and machines are tested to their limits.

Kiwi racers and riders have always had an affinity for dirt. Our nation produces some quality mud in the winter, so much so that several brands of off-roaders were initially tested on local farms.

Racing through the rough stuff has been an official pastime for more than three decades thanks to ORANZ, the Offroad Racing Association of New Zealand, and its opposite numbers in the highthrills world of motocross. While off-road adventure racing started in earnest with 1992’s Bridgestone 1000 race in Taupō, the popularity and technology of modern

powerful off-roaders can be traced back to a couple of up-for-it brothers who took a challenge from Honda.

In 1962, the Honda brand was still battling it out with Harley Davidson as the US bike of choice. Honing in on the off-road market, Honda invented the CL72 ‘scrambler’, which they claimed was the toughest in the world. To prove it, they decided to perform a stunt and pit the bike against an impossible challenge.

Naturally, they found a stuntman in Hollywood to arrange this. His name was Bud Ekins, and he made a living doing dangerous deeds for the silver screen, including motorbike work.

Ekins told Honda that a spectacular jump or dangerous downhill dash was old news. He volunteered instead to ride across the baking hot Mexican Desert from Tijuana to La Paz, 950 miles of scorpion-infested cactus scrub and sand, where a breakdown could be deadly. Not only did he agree to take the challenge, he also convinced his brother, and Honda rep Bill Robinson Junior, to tag along.

The Ekins brothers and Robinson made history in the off-road community. At that point, a hard core of racers building tubesteel Volkswagen-powered ‘sand rails’ in the desert of California. In 1967 Ed Pearlman and Don Francisco decided to

make the Tijuana to La Paz stunt into a race and test the mettle of all comers.

They called it the Mexican 1000, but it was soon to become known by another name, the Baja.

This race has endured as one of the big challenges of off-roading, and advancements in tyres, shocks, chassis

layout, cooling, power delivery, electronics, lighting and safety can all be traced back to it. The machines we enjoy today, both on the track and trail and out on the farm for work, are all indebted to the trailblazers who dare the Baja. Even after half a century of racing, it’s still one event where finishing at all is a huge victory. ¢

Deep in the dirt lives a web of life that helps nurture the plants above and provides a home for bacteria below.

Where many of us would see a clump of dirt and decaying plant matter, mycologists, the people who study fungi, see an intricate web of life. Sometimes invisible to the naked eye, mycelia are the thin strands which make up the main body of what we see as mushrooms.

In reality, the mushroom is how the fungus spreads its spores. The mycelium, a densely woven mat of fibres, is its real body. Comparisons have been made between these intricate underground structures and the neurons in a human brain or the connections in the world wide web of telecommunications.

What they do, however, is even more astounding than their physical form. There are two types of mycelium. One binds around the roots of plants, and one taps into them, becoming symbiotic with the species it hosts next to. They nourish the plant, feeding it minerals and elements gleaned from the soil, and from breaking down dead matter. A mat mycelium mat also soaks up water, making plants more resistant to drought.

What’s in it for the mushroom? Plants in this symbiotic team-up send sugars down

through their roots because the fungus can’t photosynthesise. Down in the dark of the soil, it does its part and passes on nitrogen and phosphorus. Mycelia can also help guide root systems to water and link up with other trees of the same kind, helping them help each other.

The biggest single living thing on earth was discovered by mycologist Paul Stamets, who recounted in his book Mycelium Running the existence of a 2,200-year-old fungal network under a forest in Oregon. It had spread across nearly 10 square kilometres. It produced deep, rich soil to grow bigger and bigger trees in partnership, harvesting sugars from their roots. The clever fungus even helps release a boost of nutrients to damaged trees after bushfires.

In your garden or under your pasture and lawn, mycelia play a key role in healthy vegetation. Their enemies are compaction by heavy equipment and the use of harsh chemical sprays, and their favourite thing is a rich meal of compost.

Composting households will know that the wispy white traceries of mycelia start to appear in a compost heap even before it’s spread on the soil. ¢

In the times before the 1861 Civil War in that country, massive amounts of cheap labour could be had from abhorrent practices such as slavery and indenture.

objections to such conditions, all were in a race to build faster, better routes.

William Otis would invent the machines that removed the need for back-breaking labour in moving dirt and rock. A member of a different branch of the family, involved in politics, James Otis, had called the slave trade ‘the most shocking violation of the law of nature’. Machinery could replace grim working conditions for indentured labourers on the railroads.

One of the most important machines for this task was the steam shovel.

William Otis devised the first such shovel in 1835 and designed it to fit onto a railroad flatcar. A locomotive would be connected up to move it to the rail head, then used as a power source. The shovel used chains and winding drums to scoop about one cubic metre at a time, and its boom was made of wood. Otis was only 22 at the time, but the idea was the making of his legacy. Railroads, which needed to slice through hills and level gullies for a good surface, were early adopters of the technology, patented in 1839.

Otis did not live long enough to enjoy his success. A bout of typhus claimed his life

at the age of 26. Some contemporaries say he could have avoided the illness, but he was engaged in long hours of testing to perfect his ideas.

Railway companies took to steam power in a big way, and gangs of labourers dwindled. Oddly, it was Otis’ invention that paved the way for one of the most enduring legends of US folklore.

The apocryphal race between John Henry and the steam mining drill may be based on actual events at the Big Bend Tunnel in Talcott, West Virginia. Researcher Scott Reynolds Nelson claims to have interviewed an eyewitness in the 1920s. That man, Neal Miller, described the race between John Henry, an African-American tunnelling worker of formidable skill, p and an early steam drill. Henry beat the machine but is said to have died of his exertions.

True or embellished, the tale of a working man fighting hard to beat mechanisation was also a metaphor for the times. It was not only slaves and immigrant labourers who were put off the rail gangs by steam-

Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary science, had one particular creature foremost in his mind for the last 38 years of his illustrious career; the earthworm.

The great naturalist called the humble little worm ‘the single most important creature on Earth’. He rightly noted that without it, the soil would be a barren place that could not support the amount of growing things higher mammals need to eat and thrive. Most of us have encountered worms, but far from being simple and commonplace wrigglers, these soil-munching machines have a fascinating secret life.

Worms are ideally suited to living underground. In fact, despite having no eyes, they are very sensitive to light, and being out in the open for more than an hour can paralyse them, even more so than being dry. Worms breathe entirely through porous skin; hence they need a layer of mucous to help break down the oxygen. For this reason, worms feel slimy, but it’s also why they make such a good indicator of environmental health.

Worms thrive where there are no harmful chemicals to ruin this process.

While it’s not true that a worm can regenerate into two new worms when cut in half, it can regrow segments of its body. They have five hearts and a healing factor that would make superheroes like Wolverine or Deadpool jealous. If a worm loses anything below the tube-like collar surrounding its body midway down, it could regrow.

That’s good news because we need worms to churn through the soil at full power. Their bodies tunnel through dirt using tiny hairs on each segment that act like a drill, breaking up compacted earth and mixing up nutrients. Plant roots and fungal mycelia follow in these trail-blazed worm tracks. A single worm can digest half of its body weight each day, which seems only a little until you realise that there are approximately 60 earthworms for every human being, or 300 million tonnes of them worldwide.

The common earthworm is only one of 6,000 species of worm filling a similar ecological niche on every continent except Antarctica. The likelihood of them turning up there was the land thaws is very high. After all, worms predate the dinosaurs and survived the mass extinction that wiped out those colossal reptiles.

The smallest earthworms are as thin as a hair, but the biggest live in South Africa and Gippsland, southern Australia.

These Aussie giants are the monsters of the worm world, so big that you can hear them squirming through their watercooled tunnels when you visit the wooded valleys where they live. The Gippsland Giant Earthworm can live to be 20 years old and grows to more than 3.5 metres in length. European explorers who first

saw them were wary, as they thought they were another of Australia’s notoriously deadly snakes.

Without worms, agriculture would need to find an automated solution to aerating the soil. Home compost bins would be

poorer in nutrients. Some opine that without worms, the whole ecosystem would fail. So spare a thought for the unseen heroes of the world beneath your feet; they have a dirty job, but someone has to do it. ¢

If the Mazda MX5 was the car that revitalised the fate of the roadster, then the Lotus Elise was its hyped-up, supercar-baiting opposite number.

Coming out of the gate in 1996 with a tiny footprint and a free-revving little VVt motor also found in the MGF, the Elise was pretty, polarising and poised. Summer is definitely in the air, and the temptation to get out on the water for fun, family time and fishing are strong.

Kiwis love boats. It’s a historical fact that nearly all of our ancestors came to these shores on one kind of oceangoing vessel or another. Ever since the harbours and seaways have been a place to drop a line over the side and enjoy maritime life.

Kaipara’s new Council sworn in

Poutō wharf update

The newly elected mayor and councillors of Kaipara District were officially sworn into office in Dargaville at 1pm on Wednesday 26 October.

If you live in Poutō or have gone for a drive down recently, you will have seen some of the wharf construction taking shape. Initial works by our contractor has focused on the installation/concreting of the abutment piling (where the wharf connects to the landside) and abutment formwork, getting the wharf piles in the ground. After testing and site preparation and establishment, the crew have driven a number of the piles so far but challenging unforeseen ground conditions has meant this part of the programme has taken longer than anticipated. Tidal conditions also means there is always only a small window in which to complete specific work.

The day’s formalities began with a pōwhiri to welcome Kaipara’s mayor and councillors elect at Oturei Marae, supported by Kaipara iwi and hapū.

The mayor and councillors elect, along with their guests, then made their way to The Lighthouse Function Centre at Pou Tu o Te Rangi Harding Park for the swearing in ceremony and inaugural meeting.

The team have also had to adapt new pile driving methodologies, which have contributed to the delay as they alternate necessary equipment and processes. STF plan to be back on track this week.

Unfortunately these programme delays means the wharf will not be completed this side of Christmas. STF and the project engineers have reevaluted the work programme and are now currently estimating a completion date of March 2023.

We will keep you updated on what’s happening as we head towards the Christmas break. We know we are going into the busy summer period for Poutō, and our wider district. The plan is to shut down works 22/23 December and start up again in the week beginning 9 January – keeping the busiest period clear of any active construction work. During that time the site will be left so that it is safe and secure, and ensures people can still use the access safely and easily.

A smoke free summer When you’re out and about remember that all Council land and Council buildings are smokefree.

The KDC smokefree policy has been in place across the district since 2011, with the goal of improving the health of Kaipara residents by reducing the impacts of smoking and second-hand smoke.

The Smokefree Kaipara policy applies to all council-owned or controlled parks, playgrounds, sports fields, reserves, swimming pools, busses, pensioner housing, council-owned or leased buildings and extends to 4 metres of the entrances. The policy may also apply to the outdoor areas of Kaipara restaurants who have voluntarily adopted the policy.

Trees in public spaces Trees in public spaces play many important roles. They enhance our reserves, roadsides, parks and coastal areas, provide shade and places to gather, contribute to our health and wellbeing, and perform vital ecological, environmental, and cultural functions.

You need permission to remove or work around any public tree. Any trimming or tree maintenance in public areas can only be undertaken by Council contractors and staff, unless otherwise authorised.

Recent changes to services means that we now rely on the goodwill of homeowners to mow their residential berms. This change helps to keep costs down and avoid any rates increase that would be required to continue the service.

Final phase for Maungaturoto toilets The final phase of construction for the toilets on Hurndall Street in Maungaturoto is underway. You may have already noticed contractors back on site recently, as they began work on the remaining tasks.

You can still use the public portaloos outside the St John building and between the Maungaturoto Library and Ray White on Hurndall Street until the new facilities open.

We acknowledge this project has taken longer than anticipated, causing disruption for those accessing Riverview Place and for those hoping to use the new toilets. A big thank you to the Maungaturoto community and visitors for your patience.

Berms are used to separate people’s houses from the roads and manage stormwater. Caring for your berm provides added street appeal to your property and neighbourhood. Regular mowing of berms is also important to reduce the risk of fire, provide safe access by reducing the chances of result of concealed safety hazards and/or vermin.

Northland Regional Council (NRC) is publicly notifying its intent to apply aquatic herbicide Aquathol K (active ingredient endothall) to two Far North lakes and two lakes on the Poutō Peninsula to control the pest plant hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum). The Far North lakes are on private land at Mount Camel. Of the Poutō Peninsula lakes, Lake Karaka is on private land and Lake Tutaki is on public conservation land. Aquathol K is a selective herbicide that only affects the target plant species listed above, breaks down into natural elements and doesn’t affect other native plants, fish or invertebrates.

The application is scheduled to take place between 21 November and 9 December 2022. The application will likely take place early in the morning and is weather dependent.

Contact with the lake water (including swimming) will be banned for 24 hours after the completion of the operation.

Fishing will be banned for 72 hours and there will be a restriction on water-takes for 10 days. Affected landowners have been contacted and signs will be up at lakes.
