 Kaiwaka Primary School students attended the 25th annual Kaipara Festival along with 18 other schools from the Kaipara region performing Kapa Haka and Pasifika items held at Helensville Primary School. “Our school has been to every performance except for one and the children did really well. We had a Noho Marae prior to the event and Whaea Mina Paikea, our tutor, certainly prepared the students better than ever,” said principal Rosie Ellis.

“Sixty-two students in our Kapa Haka group attended the festival and they performed on cue and did really well. We had a lot of family and supporters come along. It was a wonderfully run festival and a very enjoyable day with great performances.”

 John Markby and Flash Gordon broadcast the More FM breakfast show live from the Kaiwaka Fire Station recently with more than 200 people attending the event, raising funds for the Northland Rescue Helicopter and celebrating the progress of the Rescue Helicopter helipad. They raised more than $5,300 for the emergency service. “We have made great progress with the helipad project,” said Kaiwaka Sports Association manager Cheryl Anderson. “We have a few final touches to complete such as painting the letter H, adding reflectors and installing the Pilot Activated Lighting system. This has been a wonderful community effort and we look forward to the official opening in the near future.”

 Northland Emergency Services Trust general manager Vanessa Furze, NEST public affairs manager Steve Macmillan and chief financial officer Tony Morris met with fundraising supporter Kathy Little to thank her for organising a fundraising film. The proceeds from this event, plus donations made by the public, came to $1,833.31. This was matched dollar for dollar by Northpower as part of their annual fundraising campaign. Kathy was inspired to help NEST when her niece and nephew were involved in a serious car accident and were transported to hospital by helicopters. “You just never know when you or your family might need the rescue helicopter,” Kathy said.

The progress of the Red Hill Cemetery restoration project was celebrated with more than 150 community members gathering at the Coronation Hall in Te Kopuru to acknowledge the work volunteers have carried out.

“We couldn’t have accomplished all we have without the tremendous help of volunteers and sponsors including Douglas Logging, Newman Engineering, and many other community families and supporters,” said organiser Des Subritzky. Old trees were cleared from above the graveyard for safety reasons, concrete berms were added and the old Gum Diggers track was reopened for people to walk the path to a reminiscing seat above the cemetery, looking out across the Northern Wairoa River to Tokatoka and Maungaraho rock.

for the official opening of the old Gum Diggers track where locals Barry Searle and Leith McKenzie cut the ribbon.

Kaipara mayor Greg Gent spoke at the celebration and said the project was a testament and amazing example of what a community can achieve together and it was accomplished through the humbleness of Des Subritzky and his vision, leadership and ability to work with others.

“As a council we need to support community projects like this and help remove obstacles so that the communities and volunteers can progress forward and accomplish positive outcomes,” said Mayor Gent. 

Community Sport team leader Roxanne Kelly said Emma’s achievements at the 2016 paralympics were hard to top.

“It is great to have someone from a small town achieve at that level and to be recognised in her home town.”

Matthew Moulds was awarded Silver Fern Farms Sportsman of the Year and his award was accepted on his behalf by his sister Jessica Moulds.

Matt played in the Otamatea Hawks seniors for the 2016 season and is captain of the Northland Taniwha Mitre 10 cup rugby team 2016 as well as being contracted for the Blues over the 2016–17 season.

Kaihu Rugby Football and Netball Club was awarded Sport NZ Club of the Year and this announcement was met with a huge cheer from the crowd.

The club was recognised for their passionate sporting culture and their strong emphasis on youth and the community, as well as the support they offer the farming community during tough times.

“This was a very special occasion. We have a lot of our ancestors buried at the cemetery so it was very touching for us,” said band conductor Mr Nick Puharich.

“The atmosphere was lovely and the whole event was wonderful. We were very pleased to be invited to play. It was the first time the club have performed in this particular hall since 1958. The last time we played there our car broke down and we walked from near the Aratapu hotel arriving at the hall just in time to perform on stage.”

Fourteen stringed instruments make up the orchestra which is unique to the southern hemisphere. “It was a special

order especially for us, handmade by the Gilg family in Croatia. They have been making the instruments for five generations,” said Mr Puharich.

“Our band play traditional music, mainly to accompany the Kolo dancers and we do also play other melodies.

“The Dargaville Dalmatian Cultural Club is about the language, music and dancing. It is doing well now with the younger generation interested in learning the culture and language.

Anyone is invited to join us, you don’t have to be of Dalmatian descent at all, we have a lot of multicultural players and dancers.” 

Proposed Temporary Road Closure

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District.

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the Kaipara District Council hereby gives notice that the Dargaville Lions Club has made an application to have the following streets and carparks temporarily closed on the day and at the time below for the purpose of holding the 2016 Dargaville Christmas Parade.

Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction.

Saturday 3 December 2016 – 9:00am till 2:00pm

With the roads starting to dry up as we head into the summer months please be aware of the increased dust nuisance from travelling on unsealed roads. Please drive courteously and adjust your speed accordingly (drive to the conditions).

Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during November include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and the clearing of culvert inlets and outlets. Maintenance patrols have been replacing many reflectorized edge marker pegs and this will continue as well as replacements and repairs to road signs.

• Victoria Street from Totara Street to the west side of the Central Hotel carpark; • All of Parenga Street, Totara Street and Kapia Street; • All of Hokianga Road south of Victoria Street; and • Edward Street from Victoria Street to north side of the Central Hotel carpark.

Any objections to this proposal should be in the hands of the Kaipara District Council no later than 4:00pm on Monday 14 November 2016.

This is the second notification.

Area specific works planned during November include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the district; • Maintenance grading throughout the district when conditions are suitable;

We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of November if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue.

Thursday 8 December 2016 - 7.00am to 6.00pm Lower Hokianga Road, Dargaville between Victoria Street and Parenga Street.

Any objections to this proposal should be sent to Darlene Lang at Kaipara District Council no later than 4.00pm on Tuesday 29 November 2016.

Amping up for race day

The Dargaville Races will be slightly drier this year with racegoers unable to bring their own alcohol onto the premises following a crackdown by the district licensing committee.

Two young women from Rodney College are set to depart on the adventure of a lifetime thanks to a scholarship awarded by the Zonta Club of Mangawhai.

 Race revellers will have to find other, more sober, means of entertaining themselves at the Dargaville Races this year

The club selects young women who are showing leadership potential to participate in the 10-Day Development Voyage on the Spirit of New Zealand each year.

Committee member Sue Poynter says the group are particularly interested in students who have shown leadership in the community or have expressed a desire to work with community organisations.

“It’s not just academic and sporting ability but more community  Anja Hamelmann and Stella Waldron are awarded their Spirit of New Zealand scholarships by Jan Fisher, Zonta president awareness and the idea of service to the community,” issues and sustainability. President of the Northern Wairoa Racing Club Tim Antonio says that despite this the next race day on November 11 is sure to remain a great day out with many people travelling from near and far to lap up the atmosphere.

“We are hoping to get a really good field this year and we are expecting a crowd of more than 4,000 people hopefully,” he said.

School’s twilight gala

The Kaiwaka School Kapa Haka group will be performing at the opening of their Twilight Gala which will the major fundraiser for the year.

The Hikuwai o Kaipara Waka Ama women’s team competed in the annual Pearl of the North Waka Ama festival held at Te Tii recently entering in the novice W6 12 kilometre race starting at Tapuaetahi Beach.

 The Kaiwaka School Twilight gala will be raising funds for new computers and equipment for the students

“Our students are really well known for their outstanding Kapa Haka, and this is not to be missed,” says principal Rosie Ellis.

“We are fundraising for new laptops and information, communication and technology (ICT) equipment for our students, so they are up-to-date digital learners. Everyone is looking forward to new and improved equipment.”

There will be a big White Elephant stall and second hand books for sale.

The food stalls will be open for delicious dinner choices, including pig on a spit, and seafood chowder. “Last year the Kids Zone was really popular

and this year it will be even bigger and better.

There will be kids’ stalls, plant and produce stalls, a big cake stall, a silent auction, and lots of raffles, including a Quick Fire raffle. The silent auction winners and the big raffle draw will be at 7.30pm.

“We invite everyone to our Kaiwaka School Community Twilight Gala at the school, 33 Mangawhai — Kaiwaka Road, on Friday, November 18, commencing at 5.00pm.”

“This was our first experience racing on the open ocean and we really enjoyed it,” said team member Sophie Malone.

“We have put in many hours of training on the Northern Wairoa river and being a part of the competition gave us good experience. We are trying to put Dargaville on the map for Waka Ama and this is the first time we represented at this festival.”Sophie says they are a small club but the team plan to be present at more festivals and competitions in the future. “Training on the river is a real challenge for us as it isn’t as sheltered as some bays and

The students have been identified as players with future potential and were selected when Blues High Performance manager Tony Hanks led a team of talent identification staff from Northland, North Harbour and Auckland, tasked with selecting 55 young players from the region.

The players have been invited to attend two development camps as part of the Blues Under 17 Development Programme which is designed to provide the developing players with some insight into the life of a professional rugby player.

The Under-17 squad is the first step in the Blues Development pathway.

Mr Hanks called the programme one of the most important in the Blues development pathway.

Road safety campaigner Suzie Reyland and New Zealand Transport Agency engineer Jim Sephton presented plans for the total Matakohe bridges realignment at the Ruawai Lions Club meeting as part of their work to keep the community up to date.

Suzie Reyland has been campaigning for the bridges to be made safer since 2012 when she and her daughter were involved in a head on collision on the Anderson’s bridge.

Mrs Reyland spoke about her journey from the accident to now and relayed information about the current plans to the group for those who weren’t able to make it to previous information evenings.

Police are issuing a reminder to beach-goers about driving safely on the beaches following a recent incident involving two cars near Mahuta Gap Road.

Relieving rural response sergeant Simon Craig says it is essential for people to remember that all road rules apply on the beach.

“It is 30km an hour within one kilometre of the entrance at Glinks Gully, Baylys Beach and Omamari and these areas are sign posted.”

Animals and children are another hazard on the beach along with soft sand.

A multi agency patrol programme will be rolled out over the Christmas

and New Year period on Ripiro Beach involving the Kaipara District Council and other community organisations.

Sergeant Craig says police will be supporting this safety initiative and this may involve some endorsement.

“We want everyone to have a fun and safe time at the beach by sticking to those road rules and being considerate to other people on the beach.”

With the tourist season approaching, sergeant Craig says there will be an increased number of drivers on the road who may be unfamiliar with New Zealand road rules and encourages road users to report dangerous driving by calling *555. 

Organised by the Te Kopuru School board of trustees, the annual Multicultural Performing Arts Festival has become a much anticipated event on the Northern Wairoa event calendar.

Principal Lee Anderson says the purpose of the festival is to expose the children and the community to multiple cultures so that positive attitudes can be established.

“The purpose of this festival is also to further grow and maintain a relationship between the school and the community and to celebrate the diverse culture in New Zealand. We just want to give children a taste of what

they can do and to promote the clubs they can join. The festival also provides a platform for our children to perform,” she said.

This year the festival will include the usual food stalls as well as Segways, orb balls, paintball and golfing activities to try out.

Circus Kumarani will be there to demonstrate their skills along with the school band, Shaolin Kenpo, Zumba, the Dargaville Ukulele Club and many more.

Festivities will begin at 10am with a powhiri and continue into the afternoon. 

KAIPARA GREY POWER An active role to play Kaipara Grey Power has been actively involved with local and regional activities over the past year including the recent local body elections.

A delegate who attended the annual meeting of the Federation of NZ Grey Power in Christchurch was re-elected, and was accompanied by another Kaipara member as chair of the federation’s Retirement Villages Advisory Group.

Kaipara Grey Power always has two members to attend the quarterly Northland Zone One meetings where ideas and suggestions are formulated as remits to the AGM. Remits we succeeded with include having the health travel allowance increased from 40kms to 80kms when attending a doctor or hospital out of your area. These are now being actioned by the federation.

Locally we have been active in the community with meetings for local government candidates and in assisting the Dargaville Cancer Support Group with another Twilight Years seminar. This

seminar was very successful with the doctors from the medical centre taking centre stage, We also worked with the Dargaville Development Board to have another retirement village built in Dargaville.

Northland Inc. have now advised that they will proceed with a feasibility study as soon as the Northland Regional Council approves.

Coming up we are approaching the Kaipara District Council with a request to form a permanent older persons’ committee whose goal would be to assist the council in any matter that may affect the needs of older people.

A request already before Kaipara Grey Power is to get the hydrotherapy pool heated so that older people can exercise in the pool all the year around. Another suggestion is more and better recreation areas with appropriate facilities.

Often imitated, still unbeaten

Honda are no strangers to the ‘sincerest form of flattery’ — other bike makers have been copying their innovations for decades.

In fact, if you take a ride through the busy streets of any south-east Asian capital, you’re likely to see many variations on the Honda theme, ranging from those who have simply adopted clever combustion tech through to outright knock-offs of popular models like the ubiquitous Super Cub. Honda’s 200cc and 150cc farm bikes have also had their fair share of imitators, so the shape and lines of the 2016 CTX200 may look somewhat familiar. There’s a reason, however, that this tough little machine has been so often copied — it’s just so hard to beat.

That’s not only a comment on its longevity — Honda have been making a bike to fit this segment of the rural market since about the time it replaced the horse. A tough, no-nonsense two-wheeler with simple, hard-to-kill technology is just the thing for scouting the fence-lines, herding and mustering, and the CTX200 brings years of feedback from farmers to a sharp point.

A lot of that feedback has been about the other way a real farm bike has to be hard to beat — nature, the elements and hard work can’t wear it down. That’s why the CTX200 is easy to start, with either an electric push button or a handy backup kick lever. It’s why Honda built

it with flexible, hard wearing plastics that won’t shatter at the merest kiss of a gatepost or tractor tyre. And why its simple, single-pot engine has been made for ease of maintenance — air cooled, fed by a tried and tested carburetor system, and willing to go all day in atrocious conditions.

Little bits of attention to detail set the CTX200 apart from its imitators as well.

Honda have included generous pack racks, with the back one nicely sized for letting farm dogs hitch a ride out to work. They’ve designed a high capacity tank which doesn’t affect the bike’s centre of gravity at low speeds over bumpy terrain, so that their machine can head out at dawn and come in at sunset without fuel stops. They’ve tuned

the 197cc engine to deliver a broad band of torque, knowing that farmers often spend a lot of time in the saddle working slowly along uneven surfaces or bogging through mud.

There was a time when cordless power tools were a ‘second best’ solution — a necessary evil for those working far from the mains.

With limited battery life and sluggish performance, they were sometimes even replaced by bulky petrol powered tools for jobs such as fencing or construction.

All that has changed in the last decade.

The recent Big Boys Toys expo in Auckland was more than a showcase of hot rods and superbikes — it was also a tool chest of ‘toys’ for those in the trades or serious about DIY. Front and centre in this array was a line-up

by several manufacturers of brushless, cordless power equipment, with a smaller profile and more torque than even those devices tethered to a threepin socket. Half-inch drives, massive auger bits and powerful circular saws?

No problem for a new generation of 18v and above cordless machines.

These motors do away with brushes contacting an armature, and instead pack in a circular array of magnets, providing more torque per watt, a better power to weight ratio, and less noise and vibration. Limited only by the need to dissipate heat, a good analogy is to think of brushless electric motors as a high-revving twostroke, while old-style brushed motors compare to a plodding old diesel.

The second strand of technology which plays to the strengths of cordless tools is battery efficiency. Smart, Thomas Derek Passed away on 6th November 2016.

Much loved husband of Elizabeth for 58 years. Amazing father and grandfather of Janet, Penny and Marie and families. Lived courageously with dementia, now at peace.

A celebration of Derek’s life will be held on Wednesday 9th November 2016 at the Dargaville Bowling Club, Parore Street, Dargaville at 1pm.

Followed by private cremation.
