The Fight the Tip movement battling plans for a 1,000-hectare landfill for Auckland’s rubbish in the Dome Valley, is collecting a ‘war chest’ to finance its campaign and expected legal battles.

Kaipara District Council is looking for someone to take over community houses it owns in Mangawhai that are too expensive to upgrade, and it’s calling for expressions of interest from community housing providers to step in.

With the local body elections now decided, Auckland Council will soon turn to dealing with resource consent for Waste Management’s rubbish dump proposal in the Hoteo River catchment of the Kaipara Harbour.

Fight the Tip says a dump leak or flooding could cause massive harbour pollution and devastate marine life.

“Unfortunately the consenting system is set up in favour of corporates who have the money to invest in large applications,” says FTT executive member, Michelle Carmichael. “I think it’s totally unfair that a small community is left to fight against such a huge machine.

“Luckily for our group, there is growing support and generous people who are starting to invest in this fight; a recent $3,000 donation from a couple wanting to protect the Kaipara and environment, and to others who have donated.

Dargaville’s schoolkids got a chance to explore the history of exploration and navigation in the South Pacific, thanks to the Ministry of Culture and Heritage’s Tuia Matauranga Roadshow, in town on October 30.

The flyer represents the collaborative work of graphic designer Emma McLean and project manager Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock. Their intention was to produce an inspirational flyer with imagery of Kaipara beaches, children and families, to connect in readers’ minds the notion that every step taken towards waste reduction is a step taken to care for our environment and our children’s future.

“I hope this 2019 flyer stirs people to reduce waste and to move steadily towards the ‘zero waste’ vision,” says Ms del la Varis-Woodcock, who was sworn in as a Kaipara District Councillor last Friday. Kaipara residents will find the attractive flyer a useful resource

to keep on-hand at work or home.

Featuring useful tips, waste-reduction strategies and guidelines on what items can be recycled in the Kaipara District, the flyer invites placement on fridges and noticeboards.

The Love Kaipara team continue to deliver the education programme in schools.

“From smart shopping to repairing, composting, reusing, repurposing and recycling items, I teach Kaipara kids how to shrink the amount of rubbish thrown into rubbish bins,” says Ms Baker.

“Teaching children the Reduce Reuse Recycle programme is a joy; they really get it!” ¢

A police investigation is underway.

In the meantime, the community has rallied round to expedite repairs with sums of money donated to cover the hall’s insurance excess and get repairs underway.

Images of smashed glass, broken doors and ruined artworks have shocked locals and led to widespread condemnation of the attack with hall committee spokesperson, Robyn Skelton, saying that rather than causing fear and alarm — it’s brought the community together to help make repairs. “Donations are already coming

in, and we appreciate all of the help that’s been offered.”

Posts by well-wishers online have seen locals offer their time and renovation and building skills.

Help has included $500 from neighbouring Maungaturoto’s The Den, that usually raises funds for local use, with organiser Albie Paton saying “the wider community deserves our support as well.”

An election result recount for the second seat to represent Dargaville Ward on Kaipara District Council has confirmed Karen Joyce-Paki as a councillor.

Candidate Brian McEwing requested the recount after narrowly losing out to Ms Joyce-Paki in the final election results.

Following the vote count iterations used under the single transferable vote system, Mr McEwing received 452 votes to Ms Joyce-Paki’s 455.

The recount, which was carried out

today in front of a district court judge, gave Mr McEwing 453 votes and Ms Joyce-Paki 456.

Ms Joyce-Paki was sworn in at the inaugural Council meeting on Friday, October 25.

Students’ forest foray Getting outside the classroom was well received by Ruawai College Year 7, 8 and 9 Science students who went into the Waipoua Forest to learn about a variety of activities and concerns about forest management and kauri dieback disease.

“We split into three groups, and local people showed us cat, ferret and possum traps that we set and then released to see how powerful they were,” said spokesperson Hazel Hornell.

“The groups rotated, and students were shown inside the Lab in the Box where students were able to use microscopes to look at different

microorganisms. We put on virtual reality headsets to see how the kauri dieback disease burrows into the roots of the trees and eats away at them.

“The third activity was all about identifying the signs of kauri dieback and learning about what the tree does to protect and heal itself, and about what the local iwi is doing to protect kauri.” ¢

This week’s blast from the past looks at a machine that served the Dargaville community in the days of big hair, tight jeans and the Red Menace. In 1980 Jimmy Carter was US President, and in his country, the Dodge Motor Company of Detroit produced the RG 15 fire appliance.

One such machine, JO6199, was deployed to Dargaville later that year, and in many ways, it was a first. It was the first diesel fire engine for our volunteers, the first machine paid for by the NZ Fire Service (previous vehicles were bought by the council) and the first to pack high-pressure hoses. The US-branded Dodge came as a cab and chassis built up in England, imported by Todd Motors in Auckland, then sent to Mills Tui Fire Apparatus in Rotorua for fit-out with American-built Darley fire pumps and gear.

The Big Dodge had power where it counted, though. The company are famous for big V8s (see the Charger, Challenger, Hellcat and Ram), and they didn’t disappoint with a 540 cubic inch Hemi diesel delivering 180 horsepower and mountains of torque. Part of the reason for this was the main Darley pump, run off

the engine, which could throughput 54 litres a second. Many a fire met its match when that big machine started pumping, during the 16 years JO6199 served the Dargaville brigade.

In 1996, a further upgrade saw the big red Dodge move to Russell, where it served as their second fire engine right through until 2005. A reliable machine, it was used as a relief fire appliance across Northland until 2007, filling in for vehicles struck down for maintenance.

After being sold to the Far North District Council for the grand sum of $9.20, JO6199 served in rural Towai for two years, before returning home to Dargaville. The volunteer brigade restored the old Dodge to its former glory in time for their 100 years celebration in 2013, and now the venerable firefighting machine takes pride of place in the collection of the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club.

NEST – Shane Brearley “It is all about getting the patient where they need to go – we often don’t know what is happening with the patient until after the mission is completed.”

As one of the newest pilots at Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST) – the organisation that runs the Northland Rescue Choppers – Shane Brearley says it had been a long-time goal of his to fly rescue choppers.

So much so, that when the opportunity came up at NEST, he relocated his young family from Australia’s Sunshine Coast to Whangarei, so he could take up the chance to achieve his goal.

While many people might think it’s a full action, adventurous job each and every day, Shane says there often can be a lot of waiting around at the base on Western Hills Drive in Whangarei waiting for the next call – and you never know when they might be.

“We have a good list of daily and weekly jobs we get through at the base – everything always has to be ready to go as soon as a call comes in,” he says.

One of the pleasures, in fact, privileges, of being an MP, is attending community events.

These events give me the opportunity to mix with the community and get valuable feedback that I can and do take to Wellington.

Dargaville is set to host yet another top rugby fixture at Pioneer Rugby Park on November 9, as the men’s and women’s Northland sevens tourney rolls into town for a day of fast-paced action.

Two recent events are prime examples, one I could attend and one I couldn’t, but both were positive stories about Kaipara.

The first was the one I could attend, the swearing-in of the new Kaipara District Council at a powhiri last month at the Dargaville Town Hall. When I say new, the council was, in fact, a mix of the new and the experienced and that is the way it should be. It is what Kaipara needs. After a tumultuous and fractious period in politics, Kaipara is settling down for a period of muchneeded continuity. Mayor Jason Smith returns, deservedly so in my opinion — as do five of the former council.

That and the election of three new councillors with new perspectives is a good result for the district. A district, incidentally, that is growing faster than any other in the North Island. In my

view, Kaipara has elected the council it deserves and needs at this time.

The other event, which I couldn’t attend, was the official opening of the new Mangawhai Fire Station.

The Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade has a long and illustrious history of service to the community, and it was a real pleasure and privilege for me to meet on an earlier occasion the current volunteer brigade and many past members.

It has been an epic journey by local volunteers and community to get to that point of a new station. However, get to it they did. I applaud that, and I am encouraged by it.

The fire station, which is state-ofthe-art, will serve the Mangawhai community for many years to come.

My congratulations to all involved.

The tourney is just one of many throughout the nation, aimed at selecting a Rugby sevens squad to contest the national trophy.

Sevens legend Eric Rush will be out there on the day scoping out skilled players, looking for that combination of quick thinking, tight fundamental skills and of course, a real turn of speed.

“This is a proper stepping stone to the Northland Sevens squad, and who knows how far promising players may go from there,” says Chris.

He adds that events like these are self-sustaining, bringing in more interest and hence allowing clubs to advance their plans.

“We’re working on our facilities here, looking at the big picture ahead,” he concludes. A tournament like this in Dargaville is a great sign for the future, as well as great entertainment on the day!” To catch all the action plan for an early start on November 9, with games happening all through the day until late afternoon. ¢

I have lived in the Northern Wairoa area all my life, being educated at local schools and employed locally until beginning my own business in 2002, bookkeeping and supporting many businesses in the Kaipara area.

Once elected to the trust, I will add value when appointing directors to the Northpower Board and to the trust’s role of monitoring the performance of the company and its directors.

I will give my best to ensure the trustee’s role is carried out as per the constitution.

With a strong knowledge of good governance and successfully governing a number of Northland projects during the last 25 years, I have the experience to add value to the trust.

Last year’s Northland Rescue Helicopter Appeal here in Dargaville was a huge success by any definition of the term. In the West Kaipara locals, businesses, groups and individuals dug deep to stump up more than $44,000 on the day, with even more pouring into charitable bank accounts as the promotion continued throughout the month.

p Godfrey’s Mowers and Chainsaws is usually associated with the colour orange, but this October the popular local small engine specialists went pink to support the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s cause. Part of their plan to raise money was to raffle off a rare pink mower — the Lawnmaster Warrior, factory-built and designed with the pink ribbon appeal in mind. With a box full of raffle tickets sold, the draw was made at the end of the month, with the bright pink lawn-care appliance heading for the garage of Cherie Bishop and family. All proceeds go to the NZBCF’s pink ribbon campaign, assisting patients and their families as well as funding clinical tests and research for a cure.

“Elsewhere we’re always pleased to see motorists with handfuls of change, gold coins in ones and twos.

Here, people were pulling out tens and twenties.”

Also adding to the tally were bighearted cheques in big denominations from the business community and local groups. Some of these came from places like Ruawai, where an aerial ambulance is a definitive lifesaver, and from the forestry sector, where having medical emergency first responders in the sky is vital. The crews of Douglas Logging, for example, competed to raise funds, with their management adding a hefty top-up.

The local Lions Club was there on the barbecue, wielding the spatula and tongs to raise yet another $850 for the cause. Along with the coins and notes came praise for the helicopter teams.

“It’s a vital service for the entire community.”

“You never know when it might be your family making the call.”

“These people are real heroes. Saving lives on a regular basis.”

“You don’t know how important it is until you need it.”

Some passersby made no comment, but the sound of car horns and hands raised in ‘thumbs up’ and ‘victory’ signs told its own story.

Every little bit makes a difference, and now the challenge is on for 2019. Can we topple last year’s record? Will the good-natured rivalry to help the rescue choppers, between fellow event hosts in

Whangarei and Waipapa, see Dargaville ring the bell with donations topping $50,000? The big winners on the day will be those in dire need, no matter what the final sum. That’s because to keep the fleet of Sikorsky rescue choppers flying is worth every cent.

It’s estimated that in an area like Kaipara, with wide-open spaces, rugged coastlines, isolated farms and miles of highway between here and the nearest surgical facilities, the rule of 1-2-3 applies. This guideline, built on statistics from places like the US and Canada, shows that in rural areas served by an aerial rescue service, one out of every three people personally knows someone who has been rescued, two out of three knows of an acquaintance or neighbour who has needed the helicopter. Absolutely, everyone does business with at least one person who has required chopper assistance.

Conversely, think of the impact of lives, which may have been lost if the service were grounded. In our small

towns, such losses would be impossible to countenance. Perhaps that’s some of the reason for the Kaipara’s historic generosity.

This year Dargaville Ford is once again playing host to a Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal breakfast, on Thursday, November 14. From 6am there will be a chance to come down and participate in the action, alongside More FM’s radio hosts. Grab a barbecue breaky, drop a donation in the bucket, and take part in some fun and games designed to promote this vital service in our region. Everything we can do as both individuals and as a community will be accepted with grateful thanks, not just by the folks who administer the Rescue Helicopter Trust and those who fly hundreds of missions every year, but also by the people who are carried to safety by the rescue chopper fleet.

They, their families and friends all have reason to be thankful.

At this time of year, fluffy baby chickens are everywhere, at kids’ pet days and for sale in the classifieds. If you’re living the rural ‘good life’ it’s a good time to get acquainted with the history of keeping your own flock. It’s a rewarding and easy step toward self-sustainability.

There’s far more to the humble chicken than many people may expect.

First of all, its proper name is Gallus gallus domesticus, and it’s the most common bird on earth, thanks to our appetite for them. Taste alone means there are 50 billion hens and roosters out there today, but showing the best of the species, across a multitude of very different-looking breeds, only began formally in the 1840s.

It was then that the first poultry shows were organised, largely by gentleman farmers who legitimately felt pride and affection for their prized birds. These feelings didn’t move the farmers to vegetarianism, but they did use their influence to end the barbaric sport of cockfighting, petitioning the government to make it illegal. It’s one of the firstever cases of animal rights activism, and poultry shows replaced the fighting pits from 1849 onward.

Queen Victoria was a patron which helped the movement grow. Her particular fowl of choice was the stately, chubby Cochin, an example of pets resembling their owners, perhaps.

Another patron of the poultry shows was Charles Darwin, who had an understandable fascination with the changes and variants seen across breeds of fowl. Breeding pigeons, (which were included in English shows),

helped him to work out the details of his theories of natural selection and evolution.

The Americans got in on the action in 1849 with a great Boston poultry show. However, there were no judging criteria given, and the exasperated

poultry judges could not find a winner ‘without cooking and eating each one’ — something that was not going to happen. Today, the modern poultry show is a place to appreciate the quirky and the exotic breeds, which take pride of place next to our national favourites,

We’re enjoined to ask where we’d be without our gumboots by the famous Fred Dagg song, but where would New Zealand be without Henry Bessemer? The ‘father of modern steel’ is also the man who made fencing wire possible, and as such, he’s an unsung hero of our farmlands.

Bessemer lived in the height of the industrial revolution, in the era when steam and steel ruled the waves, made empires and meant big, big money. The kind of wire old steelmaking processes produced was short runs of thick and brittle stock; not much use for fencing the miles and miles of open land to be found in the new colonies of New Zealand and Australia.

Bessemer invented a new kind of furnace, which blew oxygen through ‘pig iron’ while it was liquid hot, blasting away impurities and making inexpensive steel. The result was perfect for ‘ductile’ use; it could be coiled out into massive long runs of wire.

There was no way New Zealand was ignoring this innovation. Bessemer kicked production into high gear in the mid-1850s, and by 1866 John Grigg of Ashburton called for tenders for 20 miles (32 kilometres) of wire fencing.

Orari Gorge Station had 48 kilometres of fencing up by 1871 and had doubled that by 1874.

Moa Flat Station, between Dunedin and Alexandra, had 402 kilometres of wire fencing by 1879.

Number eight wire had landed, and using it in innovative ways made this product a byword for ingenuity.

Fencing has been a vital activity for farmers here since the introduction

of livestock, thanks to the wily and persistent nature of sheep themselves.

Today, fencing contractors don’t have to rely on products such as the prerolled, iron-battened ‘colonial sheep fence’, which was shipped here from Sheffield, England in pioneering times.

A tried and true method evolved in the 1960s with the advent of 12.5 gauge wire and tanalised posts treated with copper arsenate.

The future may well hold posts reforged from old milk bottles if recent innovations take hold.

Tractor-mounted post drivers and ATV vehicles have made it easier to access those long and lonely runs of wire singing in the wind, but expertise is what keeps them strong.

We’re certain that old Mr Bessemer would approve. ¢

On these pages, we’re presented with a vast range of professionals who will come to the aid of local farmers when they are in need.

From mechanics to builders, plumbers to vets, there are individuals and companies who traverse the countryside day after day, keeping agriculture working. The first such group in New Zealand history was the mobile shearing gangs, and in their early days, they had the reputation of ‘wild west’ characters.

Indeed, the fastest shearers in a gang were called the ‘guns’ after the quickdraw artists of the American plains.

Fastest in each group of these travelling, hardworking (and often hard-drinking) shearers was called the Don (poking fun at the Dons of Oxford University) or the ringer. Farmers needed these men with their specialist skills, as the window of opportunity for getting the mob shorn and the wool factored and off to market was slim. Much wool was exported halfway around the world, on a schedule decided by the speed of sailing ships.

So they were respected, these blokes (in an age before workplace equality, the shearers were universally men), but also mistrusted as roguish characters, with their reputation for swearing and for settling arguments with a bout of bare-knuckle boxing. Preachers might fulminate, but the shearers were vital to the industry.

Top shearers with manual blades were able to power through 75 sheep a day or more. In the 1880s mechanised shearing came to New Zealand, and there arose many tales of top ‘guns’ trying to best the machines with skill alone. Eventually, the machinery was embraced as part of the skill of shearing, and today, the record stands at more than 700 sheep shorn in a day. The spectacle of seeing the best

shearers face-off, which had always been bet on and remarked upon, became a real competition in 1870, almost a century before the founding of the Golden Shears. Today, shearers are a professional bunch well removed

from the rough-edged colonial days. The old ‘uniform’ of black singlet, lanolinoiled trousers and wool-bale shoes has become part of the stereotype of the Kiwi farmer. Instead of a gang with manual shears, farmers now call in a

fully equipped workforce with the latest in technology. Preachers have less to complain about during the shearing season. They are still a link back to the first ‘who are you going to call?’ in New Zealand agriculture. ¢

THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER EDUCATION TRUST The above education trust was established at the direction of the late Mr Charlie Parker, a wellknown and respected local businessman.
