Pristine is working in association with Silver Fern Farms and the new plant in Mako Street has been lauded

by Kaipara District Council commission chair, John Robertson.

“The company has invested considerably to open the plant here in Dargaville and we welcome and salute the fact that they are working with Silver Fern Farms to support the local area,” he said as the ribbon was cut at the opening by the Minister for Food Safety, Jo Goodhew, last Monday.

“It is great to see the creation of employment.”

Silver Fern Farms is set to supply by-product to Pristine which allows the company to make vaccinations for both humans and animals. The parent company in India makes immunisations

that are affordable, accessible and quality assured at the lowest possible prices.

The company’s New Zealand director, Dr Vijay Dasari said Dargaville was chosen “once we met the team at Silver Fern Farms, led by plant manager Lance Warmington. We are extremely confident we can build a strong working relationship with them.

“New Zealand’s clean, green imagine is certainly a huge factor in sourcing raw material for these vaccines. The end product will be further processed in our parent company’s facility in India.”

Dr Dasari says he is excited about this new venture and is committed to the town. He has ensured the plant used local contractors and services to fit out the new facility.

Ms Goodhew, who previously worked as a nurse giving immunisations to children, said she never imagined cutting the ribbon to a company in New Zealand that would be working to protect children and animals in the future.

“This is an innovative approach in business. Primary industries in New Zealand are built on high credibility throughout the world and this partnership with Silver Fern Farms creates more jobs for the locals.”

Dargaville Business Forum’s Peter Boyd said having a large international company come into the area “gives good signals to others to invest and it shows we have the capacity to host other big companies to do business here. It is very positive.”

Electric charging vehicle network company ChargeNet officially opened the station for use in the Jaques Foursquare carpark on October 30 and Foursquare owners Greg and Paula Jaques invited electric vehicle drivers to make use of it from then onwards.

As electric vehicles become more affordable, the demand for charging stations is increasing and many popular electric vehicles have a range of only 120 kilometres.

This has lead to a nation-wide network of Rapid DC Chargers that let any electric vehicle owner quickly recharge in 10-25 minutes. These are placed in locations where people might stop for 30 minutes anyway.

“We think it is the way of the future.

There will be more electric cars and it will be good for the environment,” says Paula.

“We have had people from surrounding areas pop in because they have seen the station being installed. They are pleased because it means they have somewhere midway between Whangarei and Auckland that they can charge and it is so fast.”

of a station every 80 kilometres. “This will allow everybody in New Zealand with an entry level electric vehicle to travel long distances,” says ChargeNet public relations manager Dee West.

“Per head of population, Northland has the highest concentration of electric vehicles.”

ChargeNet have been searching for suitable locations for the stations and hope that the public will support this project as it reaches the rest of the country.

“Our vision is to work with any New Zealand entities who have the skills and resources to contribute to the public charging network for New Zealand,” said CEO and founder of ChargeNet Steve West.

New Zealand currently has 816 electric vehicles and ownership has followed an exponential growth curve with numbers typically doubling each year in countries that have encouraged adoption to electric vehicle use. ¢

Sharing expert information In a move to include the Kaipara in a nationwide conversation, Dargaville local and supporter of the Neurological Foundation Albie Russell, has organised the screening of a talk by New Zealand’s top brain scientist Professor Richard Faull at the ANZAC Theatre.

Mr Russell said rural residents often miss out on opportunities to hear experts speak because these events happen in the larger cities and he believes there are a number of people interested to hear an expert speak about the brain.

As a result the Neurological Foundation is showing a free public video of a recent talk by Professor Richard Faull on Tuesday, November 10 at 10am.

One in five New Zealanders will be affected by a neurological disorder in their lifetime and the talk will outline the progress of brain research in New Zealand, and the prospects for the development of future treatments.

Professor Faull is a director of the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland leading a team of 300 researchers. He is recognised internationally as a leading expert on neurodegenerative diseases of the human brain and collaborates with scientists all over the world.

Forty years ago Professor Faull became interested in the brain as a student at Otago University and has gone on to change the way the scientific world tackles neurological disease.

He has made major contributions to

Conservation week is November 1–8 and several Kaipara agencies including the Department of Conservation, Kaipara District and Northland Regional Councils, the Baylys Beach Society and Nga Ripo, are combining forces to create a Family Fun Day at Baylys Beach from 12–4pm on Saturday, November 7.

There is a treasure hunt, sand sculpture competition, tee ball and many other games and activities organised.

“It is great to do collaborative projects with other community organisations because it is a good way to build relationships. Family is really important

“We want people to come and enjoy the environment we have available to us on the coast for the day as we mark Conservation Week.

Jenny says lifeguards will not be on duty and there are no planned water activities, and reminds people if they play in the water they need to be safe and responsible.

p Pouto School students were treated to a piece of history when teacher Sonja King brought her 1939 P8 Chrysler to school

Ms King’s father owned the car many years ago when she was growing up in Auckland.

“He and my uncle fully restored the vehicle and dad used it as a wedding car and my two sisters and I used it at our weddings,” said Ms King.

“Dad sold it in 2001 due to health issues and I happened to see it outside a shop in Whangarei a little while ago.

I told my partner that was my dad’s car.

He didn’t believe me but it still has my parents’ names faintly etched on the number plate.

“I walked around the shop to find the owner and explained the story and asked the gentleman to give me the first option if he ever wanted to sell it.”

Northland is pushing on as New Zealand’s ‘electric vehicle’ capital with the launch of a fast charge station at Kaiwaka.

The Kaiwaka fast charger, which can fully charge an EV in 20–25 minutes, is a collaboration between local electricity lines company Northpower, Kaipara District Council and ChargeNet. It is located outside Greg and Paula Jaques’ Four Square store, giving Aucklanders easy access to juice up on their way north.

ChargeNet plans to roll-out a further 74 fast charge stations around New Zealand over three years – the next in Dargaville by the end of November, just weeks after Northpower put in a destination charger at Totara Street.

Northpower will also have destination chargers in Mangawhai and Tutukaka within weeks – taking its total of EV chargers in Kaipara and Whangarei to 12.

Northpower launched New Zealand’s first EV fast charger in Whangarei in 2014. There are now more than 50 EVs in Northland – most of those in Whangarei – and Northpower is keen to share its knowledge to help other areas of New Zealand with EV uptake.

Kaipara District Council believes collaboration is the key to assisting in the growth of the EV sector in Northland.

ChargeNet Director Steve West says EVs are going to be a game changer for New Zealand by lowering emissions and saving people money.

The Dargaville Dalmatian Social Club are holding their third annual Horse Trek on Saturday, November 14, at Waiotira.

Telling tales of hardship, perseverance and sheer determination, the author of Hard Country; A Golden Bay Life, Robin Robilliard, spoke to a group at Dargaville Library about her bestselling memoir.

“Last year was very successful with fun had by all at Glinks Gully along the beach and the surrounding farmland,” said organiser Venessa Anich.

“If you have a horse come and join us for a great day of riding. It is the perfect way for you and your horse to get back into the riding season after the winter period.

“It is a farm ride this year including some bush, riding along the Manganui River, and around a wetland. The trek will start at 10am sharp and there is a lunchtime exit option if needed. A famously delicious lunch will be provided.”

Under-16-year-old riders must have

reasonable riding ability and be accompanied by an adult, and a disclaimer must be signed before you ride out on the day.

Long distance travellers have the option to stay on the farm the Friday night before the trek. You need to be self-sufficient and there will be a paddock to put your horse in.

The cost is $45 for adults and $30 for under 16-year-olds with all proceeds going towards repainting the inside of the Dalmatian Hall in Dargaville.

The 80-year-old mother of four, farmer’s wife and writer, recounted her experiences coming from a dysfunctional home to starting her married life on a farm in Golden Bay named Rocklands, separated from the rest of the country by Takaka Hill.

Robin and her husband Garry were determined to make a life for themselves despite the harsh landscape where they made their home.

“It was our own land and that was the important thing,” she said. “I realised early on that no-one was going to hand me anything on a plate.”

The book follows her life through various jobs from nursing to working at the cement works, until she secured writing jobs for Auckland Weekly which later became the NZ Weekly, and then

Three Dargaville residents are in the running to receive recognition for their work in the community and have been shortlisted for the Dargaville Person of the Year competition.

Samantha Van Buskirk of Kaipara Kitty Haven, Gary ‘Maggot’ Murdoch of Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade and Marion McEwing of Cool Bananas, are vying for the title in the competition’s second year.

Competition organiser Erica Tebbutt says there were a number of outstanding nominations but three stood out.

“These people are actively creating positive change in our community and they optimise what it means to be a part of a small town. Whoever wins the title this year will be able to share the profits with their nominated group just in time for Christmas.”

Samantha Van Buskirk moved to Dargaville in November last year and noticed there was no SPCA in the Kaipara. Since then she has found 60 homes for cats and kittens of Dargaville.

If she wins, the money will go into a desexing programme.

Gary Murdoch is a well known community member and has served almost 50 years with the Dargaville the Fire Brigade. If Gary is voted the winner he will put money towards smoke alarms for community homes.

It’s not often that the people of Dargaville get the chance to groove to the sounds of Fleetwood Mac — live on stage.

So when the next best thing — a thoroughly convincing Fleetwood Mac tribute band — took to the stage at the Northern Wairoa Hotel this Labour Weekend, it was dancing room only.

A record crowd turned out to watch a lovingly crafted imitation of the 70’s rock icons, famous for their tumultuous personal lives as well as their charttopping singles.

Lead singer Stevie Nicks, who defined the fashion styles of the era, was so ably depicted that patrons would have sworn they had been transported back to 1977.

Hotel owner Darryl was most pleased with the response, with many patrons coming early to enjoy a buffet dinner before the show. Next up the Northern Wairoa hotel have booked a tribute to country legend Dolly Parton, whose crossover hits and duets with the likes of Kenny Rogers have made her a household name.

Getting into the American spirit, November is also the month when folks in the States celebrate Thanksgiving.

Note: We’ll be taking a break from 28 November to 3 December, to taste the awesome kiwi seafood in Bluff.

The fine old tradition of cooking sizzlers outdoors may have come over with our nautical ancestors — even the word ‘barbecue’ comes from an old 17th century Spanish sailor’s term for an impromptu beach fry-up. Take living it easy, outside Summertime, and it’s time to enjoy outdoor living — time for backyard barbecues and watching the sun go down over shared conviviality.

It can be a simple barbecue station, or even a more comprehensive outdoor kitchen as a centre of entertaining or family enjoyment.

A simple and straightforward outdoor kitchen can be set up by any DIY-Kiwi homeowner and here are some tips to get you started.

You may have an existing deck area which is a good start. But if not, consider paving or tiling an outdoor area. The surface will be be easy to clean, pressure wash, and will stand up to lots of traffic.

Establishing the floor layout and material of your outdoor kitchen is key to building the foundation of your space.

If you are on a deck consider re-staining or painting and ensure that the deck is in top condition. Proper flooring will not only complete the overall look, but add

durability and value to the end product.

Keep in mind safety aspects because the area may well be near a swimming pool or spa tub. Choose materials that meet safety criteria, stay away from flooring that may be too slick or rugged, and select a material that can endure food spills and grease.

Placing the barbecue or grill away from the entrance to the home will help reduce foot traffic past a potential hazard as well as keep smoke and cooking smells out of the house itself.

So have a good idea of the general wind pattern and orient your cooking source accordingly.

It might also be a good idea to consider the proximity of the household kitchen to the entertaining or family area – to save long treks with food and condiments, plates and other necessities. ¢

company DAE noted that another local Dargaville businessman was recovering a large amount of dead batteries from the island for recycling.

This led him to a ‘reconnaissance’ mission, sounding out the possibility of opening the island’s first auto supply store.

The results were resounding — and plans were undertaken to expand DAE into Great Barrier, in the small settlement of Claris.

The very hardy, self-sufficient population of the island — who extensively use ‘off the grid’ energy, hence their battery turnover — expressed enthusiasm that from now on they will not have to voyage by sea to fix their autos and small engines. It’s an interesting case of a Dargaville company expanding into the wider market to serve another small community. ¢

In its previous generation, the Ford Focus collected the crown as the world’s best selling car. A true global vehicle, the midsized hatch was born in Europe, and found huge popularity in markets as widespread as the United States and China.

Now the new generation has landed in New Zealand — more aggressively styled, with a definitive presence accentuated by the now-trademark Ford grille, bold creases and lines, and a low, road-hugging stance.

In the midsized market, the key indicators of success are practicality and economy — both of which are served well by the new iteration of the Focus. With figures as low as 6.7 litres per 100 kilometers, and a peppy new 1500cc ecoboost engine under the hood, the Focus delivers something more as well — it’s decidedly fun to drive. Sitting behind the wheel you also notice the sense of quiet; a lack of road noise, a contented purr from that 132kW mill and the scenery moves backwards effortlessly.

Looking back at the ancestors of this nimble little five seater, it’s staggering to see how much safety and information tech has been added, while keeping a proportionate price. The well-loved Escorts and Lasers of the past would have been green with envy at the SYNC2 infotainment and navigation system fitted to all 2015 Focus models, let alone other options such as hands free automatic park assist.

Ford have understandably high hopes for the successor to one of their best selling cars of all time. With both this 1500cc offering, a diesel powered option as a wagon, and a hot hatch spec ST Focus in the lineup, the boys from Dearborn seem to have all the boxes ticked and the bases covered.
