A newly activated North Kaipara Coastguard radio repeater station above Tinopai proved a lifesaver for Dargaville boating couple, Terry and Thelma Curel, when their boat caught fire off Kelly’s Bay “The repeater station had only been operating for two weeks before the incident at Labour Weekend,” said coastguard radio stalwart, Dorothy Quaife. “It provided vital, clear communications as a rescue operation was mounted.” The Curel’s 30-foot launch caught fire after a gas bottle leak. The couple was able to get aboard a dinghy, suffering slight burns and shock and they were quickly picked up. However, their boat burned to the waterline. “I suddenly had a call from Brian Frost, on the launch Jay Ar, at 12.51, who reported the fire and that the launch Buccaneer had picked up Terry and Thelma,” said Dorothy. “There were about five other boats in the area, and I understand two people aboard one of these were ambulance staff.
