“The Hawaiki cable is a core piece of infrastructure which will increase connectivity for New Zealanders, better connecting us to the world and each other, and will help boost our economic growth.

“It will also have a positive impact on the Northland economy by making it easier for more businesses to set up there, rather than in the main centres.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR This year there will be no Kaipara Vintage Machinery tractors in the Christmas parade. Why not? Because of bureaucracy PC gone mad.

As we understand it, the Lions Club runs the parade. They apply to the council for a permit to close off streets. The council charges a fee and Road Safety is involved, including personnel and lots of cones, at great cost.

We have been told that all vehicles in the parade must be registered, warranted and insured. The cost to register our tractors for one day to drive around in a closed off area is ridiculous. Effectively, the history of Dargaville that our vintage machinery represents, is prohibited.

Other New Zealand Vintage Clubs tell us they parade through their

main streets without problems. We have actually taken part in a Paparoa parade where the thru traffic joined their parade in good spirits. All great fun. Some are escorted by their traffic officers, at no cost.

Otorohanga doesn’t have a problem. So what’s so special about Dargaville? Hopefully the new council can take a broader view and allow some of our history to be viewed in a Christmas Parade.

Otherwise — come up to Harding Park and see our restored tractors and vintage machinery on our open days, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

It’s well worth the $10 entrance fee, as lots of overseas visitors will tell you.

Tinopai School marked 100 years of education on the weekend, with past staff and students joining in on the celebrations.

The centenary began with kaumatua Graham Withers and Mikaere Miru welcoming everyone with a powhiri.

This was followed by some waiata sung by a group of current Tinopai students before attendees were invited to tour the school and to reminisce with friends and family.

A young Mangawhai designer recently launched her range of children’s and teenage swimwear that she has personally designed to make ocean swimming more comfortable.

Dargaville couple Josie Scott and Graeme Ramsey are packing up their lives and heading for West Africa for one year to volunteer for charitable trust, Dream Big Ghana.

Trinity Smith is 12 years old and has been designing swimming togs since she was very young.

“When I’m not at the beach you will often find me drawing or talking about designs for togs,” said Trinity.

The township of Maungaturoto is going to be busy in the month of December as the community come together with different events celebrating the festive season.

Dargaville Methodist Minister Reverend Kuli Fisi’iahi, his wife Luseane, Freemasons Northland District Grand Master Kevin Burch, Reverend Rex Nathan, his wife Ihapera, a Ministry of Education representative and playgroup families gathered to bless the facilities and to recognise the contributions made. Six years ago Jenny Huriwai ran away and joined the circus, literally, taking on the role of Northland manager of Kumarani Productions. Now she is handing over the reins to new manager Abbe Clark.

Northland Kenpo Karate has received high praise during a visit from Kenpo Master Graham Lelliott from California.

“When visiting us in Northland, he was openly impressed with the standard of knowledge and technique here. This of course was good to hear for the team that works so hard to bring it all together. He also commented that it compared with and was up there with anything he has seen anywhere else in the world,” said Northland Kenpo founder Ron Mason.

“The attendees at these events were unanimous in their enjoyment of the same, and the experience of having an international master visiting us is always broadening to our Kenpo story.”

Mr Lelliott began his Australian and New Zealand tour with the Northland training sites in Dargaville and Whangarei, and stayed with Northland Kenpo founder Ron Mason and his wife Gail. Master Lelliott has a very

close association with many schools internationally and holds a Kenpo Camp in California every two years, with senior visiting instructors from many Kenpo karate schools around the world, offering instruction from beginner to very advanced techniques.

He also runs a large school of his own in Fresno, California where he can be found when not travelling and teaching.

The Northland Kenpo club members were also pleased to learn one of their students, Croyden Weight, was awarded an ASB Sports award for Kenpo at the recent Kaipara Sports Awards.

“Croydon is a very dedicated and conscientious student of our school,” Ron said.

Ron encourages anyone who is interested in learning more about Kenpo karate to contact him or one of the senior black belts. ¢

“I like all things mechanical and enjoy the challenge of working out how things work. It’s a great environment and there’s lot’s of fun to be had,” said Emma.

“We have been living in the Kaipara for at least 10 years and I have been working here for almost a year. Being a female in the industry is really good.”

Anglers tackle the Kaipara Once again, keen anglers from far and wide will cast a line in the Kaipara Harbour in the hope of being crowned King of the Kaipara.

The event, organised by Mike Nola of Dargaville’s Nola Sports, will offer a range of prizes, including fishing equipment and accessories, for exceptional catches of kingfish, kahawai, snapper, gurnard and trevally.

Participants can enter as an individual

or a team and there are specific team prizes. “This competition has a long history in the Kaipara and we have had more interest than ever this year.

Small details, big reward Regardless of your fishing experience, having good quality gear and a basic understanding of the tides can go a long way.

On west coast harbours such as the Kaipara, small tides are best to fish on as the currents aren’t as strong and you have more of a chance to get the bait to the bottom.

When it comes to bait, fresh is always best and remember to tailor the size of your bait to the size of the fish you are hoping to catch.

Leave the barb of the hook exposed as this is what catches the fish. Many people make the mistake of trying to disguise the hook thinking the fish won’t bite down if they see a sharp hook, however this usually means the fish can nibble around the hook and escape without getting caught.

Popular baits are pilchards, bonito squid and trevally. Squid is another popular option and easily obtainable.

Again the fresher the better.

You can tell if squid is old by checking the colour and the smell. If it’s a dark grey or purple or has a strong smell, it is old.

Squid tends to stay on the hook nicely due to its rubbery texture. Smaller fish have a harder time picking it off and whilst they are trying to nibble at it, larger fish will be attracted to your line.

Sinkers are another small detail that can make a big difference. Most sinkers

in New Zealand are made of lead and are easily found in many sports, hunting and fishing stores.

A flat sided sinker sits on the sea bed steadily and will hold a line in position where as a torpedo sinker can assist with getting more distance from your cast.

When choosing a hook, target the right one for the species and think about the bait presentation on the hook. Always leave the tip exposed and keep in mind it is very difficult to catch a small fish on a big hook, but it is possible to catch a big fish on a small hook.

With the right equipment and a little forward thinking, you can increase your chances of landing a big one and having a successful day out on the water. ¢

Since the dawn of time, when mankind first went after the elusive ‘big one’, the goal of getting a baited hook out into deep water has driven technological development. There are those who even say that early man’s hunger for fish was behind the development of the boat, and hence the dawn of trade and exploration.

That was all over 30,000 years ago — the age of the oldest fish hook we’ve dug up — but today there are ample options for getting that tasty bait over the breakers and into trophy territory.

First among them is the tried and true surfcaster, a kind of rod which has received a real sting in the tail recently with the development of nanotechnology.

This new materials tech has enabled the tip of some advanced rods to enact a whip-like motion, meaning longer casting distances. British angler Danny Moeskops holds the record for longest official cast, at a staggering 278 metres, thanks to this kind of science.

She tole Boss an me that alla her mates had flee up inta a big hill ‘cos sum sirins were goin’ off warnin’ there mite be a choonarmi. I arsked Boss’s gerlfrend Sharlene wot that ment an’ she sed wen there an’ erthquake, some big waves can come into that land an

For the year ending September 2017, the export lamb slaughter is forecast to decrease 1.8 per cent to 19.5 million head, the second year of decline from 2014–15, which was boosted by a high dairy cull cow slaughter.

Export beef production is projected to increase slightly to 609,000 tonnes with price estimated at 467 cents per kilogram for 2016–17, a 2.5 per cent decrease on the provisional price for 2015–16.

Wool export receipts are expected to decrease by 12 per cent for 2016–17.

This reflects overall softer demand, with volumes shipped similar to the previous season.

For 2016–17, the overall annual average auction wool price is forecast to decrease 13 per cent on the previous year. Profit before tax for the All Classes Sheep and Beef Farm for 2016–17 is forecast at $67,000 per farm, down 13 per cent on the previous year.

Avocado plant production suggests a record crop for 2017, forecast to double to 5.1 million trays and $165 million respectively for the year ending June next year.
