p Summer has nearly arrived, which means strawberries are ready for the picking. Children and their parents from the Dargaville Make a Friend Playgroup, spent the morning at The Strawberry Punnet’s patch last week, where they were invited to pick and fill a punnet of strawberries to take home. The local family run business owners, Trent Best and Lynda Wilson, have been a part of the playgroup for the past five years. “Having the children here to pick was a great way of contributing back to the community and it would have hopefully made memories to look back on,” said Lynda.

A project office and equipment park has been established for contractors Fulton Hogan in a house on the existing highway between the single lane bridges, and initial work has included setting up site entrances and sediment controls. “The project team will then start cutting and filling the road corridor to the new design height and build haul

roads to carry construction equipment to the new bridge locations,” said the New Zealand Transport Agency liaison manager Jenny Scott. “By the end of summer, we aim to finish 90% of the bulk earthworks and these will be stabilised using a combination of regrassing, mulching, and granular covers before the winter.”

Bridge piling works over the Matakohe River will appear at the end of summer while construction of the smaller bridge over Parerau Creek will start in late winter next year. The bridge building will involve major crane construction which will be capable of lifting a 33-metre, 50 tonne prefabricated beam into place. continued on page 5 …
