The 18-year-old Dargaville High School student has been awarded not one, but two scholarships from very separate New Zealand tertiary institutions — in Auckland and Dunedin.

The unusual double means she will have to turn one of them down, no doubt delighting one institution and upsetting the other.

Renee has just finished her final year at Dargaville High and wants to study physiotherapy. Accordingly, she applied for scholarships with the Auckland University of Technology as well as the Otago University.

“I applied on the off chance. I didn’t expect to be successful. I applied because I could,” she said on learning of her unexpected choices.

Renee first received the news she had been awarded an Otago University  Dargaville student Renee Callis holds the scholarships she has been offered by Auckland University of Technology and Otago University leadership scholarship for She expects to make her big decision and PE. In her final year she also took $5,000. Shortly afterwards, the news came that she had also won an AUT at the beginning of next year, once she chemistry, statistics and English and on the sports field, enjoyed tennis Significant Student Scholarship worth receives her Level Three results.

The programme offered 20 hours of basic computer training to families with school-age children and, on completion of training, they each received a refurbished PC, a subsidised internet connection and free technical support. New chair for health trust Building starts at Mangawhai ambulance station  by Joanne Speechly

Anna Curnow has been appointed as the new chair of Kaipara Community Health Trust and takes over the position from Rod Sudlow on December 1.

Mangawhai is now closer than ever to having its own ambulance station with construction work now underway.

In his annual report, Rod said that despite his farewell, he is delighted at what has been accomplished, and with the calibre and enthusiasm of the trust members. “The trust is in good hands, and I anticipate that the future will see Dargaville health services continue to be enhanced.”

He said the highlight this year was undoubtedly the negotiation of a new 15 year agreement with the Northland District Health Board.

“Trustee Alistair Hammond, whose father was a founding member of KCHT, had the honour of being a signatory to the new agreement.

“The Kaipara community lost nothing in the negotiating process and the Joint Venture Group is already tackling some areas where we wanted to see improvements,” said Rod. CEO Debbie Evans, who has been with the trust for nearly 10 years, was also recognised for her “unrestrained enthusiasm, passion, commitment and support.”

Rod also noted that the Health shuttle, which is managed and mainly funded by the trust, continues to meet the objective of assisting local people to access health services and the trust

once again achieved an unqualified Audit Report for the trust accounts.

“I would like to extend, on behalf of the Board and myself, a special thanks to Debbie, Sheena, and Ian, for the keeping and presentation of our Financial Records. I believe the Board is providing strong governance over our affairs and I hope we can continue to place trustees on professional development workshops and courses that will enable our high standards to be maintained.

“Finally, I wish to thank all my fellow trustees for their support and involvement.”

The trust welcomed five new trustees this year. New treasurer Ian Farrant filled the accountant position, Alistair Hammond that of barrister and solicitor, and Brenda Jackson, Anna Curnow and Jan Robinson, the vacant ward positions.

Incoming chair Anna Curnow is looking forward to her new role.

“The trust acts as custodian of one our most valuable community facilities,” she says. “It is an honour to be appointed as chair and I look forward to working with the board and the CEO to protect and enhance our community’s access to quality healthcare.” 

 Work has started on building a St John ambulance station in Mangawhai

Station manager Martin Davies says the Mangawhai community has been fundraising for four years, with the local St John op shop raising more than $700,000 for the project.

He says construction will take around six months, with an opening date in April or May 2015.

While the new station will have room for two ambulances, only one will be stationed there. But that might change depending on demand.

Mr Davies says Mangawhai is currently served by the Kaiwaka station. But that is only a small station that is backed up by larger stations in Maungaturoto and Bream Bay.

On average, the Mangawhai area has 35 to 40 call-outs a month.

“Almost all are medical. We’ve an aging population, so there are many call-outs for chest pains.”

He says having an ambulance based in town will mean quicker responses to emergency call-outs. And a visible base will help in the recruitment of volunteers.

“Finding enough volunteers is a struggle everywhere.”

He says the Mangawhai community is strongly behind the project. The new station will be located on reserve land on Molesworth Dr, after Kaipara District Council issued a licence to occupy. 

New show attraction

Theatre’s rising stars

Paparoa’s A and P Show is only nine weeks away and marks a time of rejuvenation.

Christmas time is all about the kids at Dargaville Little Theatre and this year, the annual children’s show will see young talent play an active role behind the scenes, as well as on stage.

 Traditional rural sports such as the hotly contested woodchopping competition draw the crowds

Preparations for the 139th North Kaipara A and P Show, in February next year, include a new lick of paint for the showground’s shearing shed, spectators’ stand and water tank and the repair and painting of the Goat Pavilion is imminent.

The new colour scheme will integrate with the show’s forthcoming signage, which Paparoa Show gained full approval to erect earlier this month.

The 12 new road signs will remain in place, on private property, from midDecember until after show day.

The area surrounding the Sports Pavilion has also been upgraded, thanks to the efforts of Battensby Brothers and Powell Contracting, together with a very generous donation of metal from Atlas Quarries. Operating with very modest financial resources,

Paparoa Show relies on support from local people and organisations and their help is greatly appreciated.

A new class of membership is being offered to Equestrian, Cattle and Dairy Goat exhibitors, which provides a 25% discount on fees and free entry to the Paparoa Show and 11 other Northern Districts shows.

More volunteers are needed in the lead up to the show and people who can help should contact Gary Christie on 09 431 6011.

Volunteering provides a great opportunity to meet new people, contribute to a valuable community activity and preserve an age old tradition.

Twelve year old Dargaville Intermediate School student Lara Brownie takes the role of assistant director and 13 year old Te Kopuru School student Nico Zwaans is stage manager of The Snow Queen.

The musical is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, which centres on the struggle between good and evil, as experienced by Gerda and her friend, Kai. “This year we have a cast of around 20 and we’re also trying to incorporate the kids into the running of the show,” says director Deborah Steele.

Lara, chose to study directing when she attended DLT’s acting academy and says she is enjoying learning about the different aspects of theatre, such as lighting and props.

She has acted in five previous shows and hopes to be involved with theatre for many years to come.

“Rehearsals are going well,” she says. “And getting better all the time.”

“We are getting to the nitty gritty stages now,” adds Deborah. “The show opens on November 29 and runs for five shows, finishing on December 7.

“We are also entering the Christmas Parade this year, before the show on December 6. The theme is ‘A Fairytale Christmas’, so it’s very fitting.”

A bright new, colourful brochure promoting Dargaville as the heart of the Kauri Coast is now available.

The brochure has been produced by the Kauri Coast Promotions Society, with funding from Kaipara District Council, and builds on the success of a previous publication.

Maps, photographs and editorial tell of the Kauri Coast’s history, pristine beaches, lakes and forests. It is also filled with reasons to visit Dargaville, what to do and where to find accommodation, eateries and services.

A selection of cinematic treats Airwaves give support  by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Anzac Theatre has enjoyed huge success in the past year, and those involved with managing the local home of the cinematic arts say it has been a hugely rewarding experience.

The ASK programme, which aims to provide support and information about suicide, has itself been given a helping hand.

The Anzac Theatre has brought the community a wide range of films, from current sell-out screenings of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 to more unique offerings such as Auntie and the Star People and Ida. Cinema manager Vern Woods is justifiably proud of the range of genres on display.

“Nevertheless, there are a number of films that we are keen to offer moviegoers that come from the fringes of this ‘mass market’,” he says. “Titles which are wonderful and captivating films.”

To this end, and following on from the success of a screening of 1920s horror classic ‘Nosferatu’, the Anzac Theatre will be starting a series of screenings in late November dubbed ‘The Sunday Selection’. These masterpiece films will be shown every second Sunday evening, beginning with Finding Vivian Maier on November 30.

This fortnightly program does not set out to be ‘high-brow’ or ‘art-house’ — instead it’s a chance to premiere films which would usually show only in multiscreen theatre complexes, but which are critically acclaimed and beautifully

composed. Sometimes experimental, sometimes confrontational, but always inspirational. The films will be drawn from a wide range of genres and from all over the world and will hopefully appeal to an equally wide audience. The aim is to screen cinematic gems which represent the many and varied styles available to the adventurous moviegoer. 

The Awareness of Suicide in Kaipara committee expressed their need for a home base at a recent meeting and Big River FM station manager Anaru Tana answered that call.

“ASK provides an important service and their vision is simple: to raise awareness of suicide in our community, but to do this effectively, they need an office of their own,” says Anaru.

“The Northern Wairoa Radio Trust is more than just a radio station. We are active in supporting community initiatives and ASK is certainly a worthy cause, run by a circle of young people.

“Here, we are able to offer them an office and Wi-Fi, free of charge, while they establish themselves, and this is what we’re about.” Among those involved in setting up ASK is Dargaville High

School Year 10 student Jay McLarenHarris, who says he is grateful to the radio trust and he is enjoying having a dedicated base.

He says until now resources have been stored at committee members’ homes. “But now we have a place for storage and meetings.”

Fifteen-year-old Jay says he loves volunteer work and is passionate about community, giving back and helping people.

The ASK committee currently has 12 members but they need at least 15 to become an incorporated society, so new members are welcome.

Members of the public are being asked for their views on how Dargaville’s Riverside Gardens can be improved.

The gardens are located between the town’s Countdown supermarket and the Northern Wairoa River. Although the land is owned by the Kaipara District Council, it is administered by the Dargaville Gardens Trust.

Trust chairman Graham Kidd says it wants public input into its plans. The trust commissioned local landscape architect Peter Boyd to draw some concept plans.

Mr Boyd wants to improve the western entrance to the gardens closest to the Northern Wairoa Boating Club.

“I want to open the space up. The current fence is uninviting.” He says the impending completion of the Countdown

supermarket may provide an opportunity to review the gardens’ northern boundary and possibly to remove the existing fence. “I want a grand plan that’s simple and friendly.”

Mr Kidd says the trust will decide what it wants to do and then seek money from trusts and philanthropic bodies. He says Dargaville is unusual in having a park administered by a trust. “One of the advantages of that is you can get outside funding that the council can’t.”

Mr Kidd says the trust receives an operating grant from the council which also provides contractors who do all the maintenance. The gardens trust also appreciates the support of Countdown

Extra accommodation planned for rest home  by Colin Patterson

The Maungaturoto Charitable Community Trust is seeking support for a $2 million project to expand the town’s rest home.

The trust was formed 20 years ago when the local Post Office closed and residents wanted to buy it and turn it into a medical centre.

The trust bought the post office as well as the adjacent postmaster’s house, which it converted to a 16-bed rest home.

“This facility has enabled many local residents to enjoy excellent care in their declining years. An added benefit is that families are able to support their loved ones within their own community, which has been much appreciated,” says trust chairman Don McKay. But the rest home is full and needs to be expanded. “We’re

turning people away from the rest home — about three or four a month. That’s not good for us, as they’re our own people,” says Mr McKay. So the trust wants to expand by a further seven beds, which will enable it to provide a specialist dementia unit.

But the proposed expansion will not come cheap. “It’ll cost around $2 million to do it.”

He says the trust has significant resources of its own. But it will have to

find $1 million from outside sources and is seeking help from people with skills in applying for and raising money.

A public meeting held last week attracted around 30 locals who backed the expansion proposal. Mr McKay also spoke at a meeting of the Maungaturoto Rotary Club outlining the trust’s plans.

Mr McKay says trustees will meet later this month to decide the next steps. But he says they would welcome public input. 

While Christmas may be the season of giving and goodwill toward all, OCS manager Helen Hirst says it is a tough time for struggling families.

OCS has developed a programme for helping those families. “People come here in dire straits. We have an arrangement with the local Four Square store. We give people a coupon which they can use to receive a box of food from the store.”

Ms Hirst says each coupon redeemed also helps the OCS foodbank maintain its stocks at a difficult time of year.

She says OCS also offers its clients support through its social worker and budget advisor. “Some people need strategies to help keep them out of poverty.”

With the foodbank under pressure at this time of the year, Ms Hirst says they appreciate the community’s support.

This summer there are plenty of reasons to head off the beaten track — camping, fishing, sightseeing, or just plain enjoying your 4x4’s carefully engineered off-road capabilities.

Staying secure this holiday season  by Andy Bryenton

As the summer — and summer holidays — approach, the prospect of leaving the home unattended has many people considering their security arrangements.

And it’s not just the prospect of possible home burglary which has folks investigating their options in this field.

Boats, recreational vehicles and even farm outbuildings can fall prey to that most opportunistic of crimes, prompting a yearly interest in the technology of burglary and robbery prevention.

Surveys in the United States are borne out by information from our own police force — burglary is indeed overwhelmingly a crime of opportunity.

Most break-ins are perpetrated by young male offenders, without a history of violent crime, and many of whom live within walking distance of their target.

The typical burglar is looking for an ‘easy option’, and any site with poor security — broken windows or latches, visibly unlocked doors and the like is an open invitation.

The best deterrent, then, lies with making it obvious that you take your security seriously — as well as knowing your neighbours and keeping a lookout for any suspicious activity this summer.

For physical security, check the perimeter — a sweep of windows and doors should ensure that latches and deadbolts are working and tamper-proof.

For peace of mind as well as some fresh air — and less pesky insects — it may be a good idea to fit screen doors front and back this summer.
