 Wellsford School students participated in the Wellsford Santa Parade last weekend. The theme of their entry was ‘The Magic Treehouse’. This is based on the production the school is performing next month. The basic plot sees children being transported to different locations through the books they read. “Each class chose a destination where they would like to explore including a time before the world began, the prehistoric age, France, and a Magical Dojo land. The students, teachers and parents put a great effort into preparing costumes and props which made for an enjoyable parade,” said teacher Daryl Anderson.

Blind cricketer and Dargaville resident Ming Ming Edgar has been selected to play for the New Zealand Blind Cricket team and will travel to India to take part in the T20 Blind Cricket World Cup early next year.

“The tally so far has gone way over what we expected. More FM had a goal of $15,000, so to get $40,000 is amazing and what Kaipara contributed to that is mind blowing.

“We are nearing the end of our annual appeal and what a way to end it. The breakfasts have been a lot of fun and to get that boost right at the end was very unexpected.”

The final fundraising breakfast was held at the Dargaville Fire Station where More FM announcers John Markby and Flash Gordon broadcast their morning show live.

Dargaville chief fire officer Jeffrey Palmer said he was ‘over the moon’ about the number of people who had turned up to the fire station to support the rescue helicopter.

“There has been a huge amount of people who have dipped into their wallets and given generously.”

The firefighters and the rescue chopper have a close relationship and work together frequently to set up landing zones.

“We are all part of the emergency services family,” Mr Palmer said.

Former Dargaville volunteer firefighter Kelly Sproule attended the breakfast and had worked closely with the rescue helicopter during his time with the brigade. Earlier this year he had to be rescued himself. Mr Sproule found himself being transported by the chopper when a truck rolled on him along Pouto Road.

“I’m so grateful the emergency services and rescue helicopter showed up when they did.

“If it wasn’t for them things could have been a lot worse.”

Blind cricket is played much like sighted cricket however bowling is underarm, the stumps are metal to make an audible sound when hit and the ball is plastic with a rattle sound.

Ming Ming has been playing cricket for almost two and a half years now since being selected for a development team in 2014.

New Zealand Blind Cricket Association president Donna McCaskill says over this time Ming Ming has improved steadily.

“It is always positive to see a player showing improvement. Obviously his improvement has been enough to get him selected,” she said.

Seventeen players have been chosen from teams across New Zealand to

represent the country and they will go on to compete against 10 other countries in New Delhi and Bangalore.

“Ming Ming puts his heart and soul into everything he does and has never missed a practice,” his adopted New Zealand mother Gaynor said.

Ming Ming is in the category of B1 which is for totally blind players and was one of six players to be selected out of eight.

The players are being encouraged to train individually up to three times a week and practise as a team once a month.

Gallery hosts festivities

With a range of Christmas-themed arts and crafts, bric-a-brac and local music, The White Rock Gallery’s Summer Fair in Paparoa is set to be a lively occasion on Saturday, December 3.

Dargaville resident, Leo Glamuzina‘s grandfather Jack Silich originally owned the land that the Red Hill Cemetery and Gum Diggers Track is on many years ago and the family donated the parcel of land to the council.

 The Eccentric Ukes will play at the summer fair in Paparoa

This will be the second summer fair since the gallery opened, and funds raised will go towards keeping the gallery afloat.

Committee member Hanna Stevens says the fair will have a festive theme and provide some good Christmas shopping opportunities.

“We will have lots of stalls with a variety of different things for sale including white elephant, arts, crafts and books,” Hanna said.

“The artists from the gallery are bringing more of their own items to sell

on the day, and there is a bric-a-brac section, so members of the public can have a stall for a $15 fee.”

Local ukulele group The Eccentric Ukes will be performing throughout the day and the gallery will be selling Devonshire scones with tea or coffee as well as holding a barbecue.

“In February we will have been open for two years. It’s a pretty good achievement, I think, for a little community gallery,” said Hanna.

The fair will start at 9am to coincide with the Paparoa Farmers Market. 

“My grandfather moved away from Red Hill and gave our family the land.

There were pine trees there and we felled the excess trees and donated the land to the council to create a community cemetery,” says Leo. Leo’s grandmother died in 1928 and is buried near the boundary on the top of the hill.

“The Croatians used to meet in the Red Hill Hall across the road on a Sunday and have mass and they played bowls at the top of the hill with balls made out of the hedge. It was a lot of fun.”

“There was a shanty across the road with an open fireplace. When I was a kid Dad used to wash the gum there. They would dig trenches and the rain would fill them and then the men would wash the gum and sort the chips, nuts and nuggets ready for sale.

“I think the recent work they have done at the site is wonderful, it is a credit to the community. Many people helped, and Douglas Logging came out with the big expensive equipment — they were amazing. The track overlooks the area the gum diggers worked on. It is good to see the community pulling together.” 

The Kaipara District Council will be trialling a pedestrian only zone on lower Hokianga Road between Victoria Street and Parenga Street where the gum digger statue stands.

 The area on Hokianga Road and Victoria Street that will be closed to traffic

On Thursday, December 8 this area will be closed to vehicles from 7am– 6pm.

“The council have done a lot of community consultation and one of the things that kept coming up was having a pedestrian only zone,” says Community facilitator Darlene Lang Gent.

“Last year we trialled a section of Victoria Street and this year we have decided to take it off the main street and try one of the side streets. This is all part of the Dargaville Placemaking Vision Guide which seeks to enhance the Dargaville township. We are trying

to create a hub that draws people in and there will be plants, music, seating and games in the pedestrian only space and a place where people can sit and enjoy the view of the river.”

With this section being closed off to traffic, car parking will not be available in the area.

Temporary disabled carparks will be allowed for on Parenga Road outside the chemist and traffic will still be able to travel as usual on Victoria Street and Parenga Street. This will be clearly signposted and traffic management will be in place. 

As the number of needy families and individuals continue to rise throughout the country, the Dargaville Combined Churches Foodbank are calling for monetary donations to purchase perishable goods in the lead up to Christmas.

Combined churches secretary and treasurer Heather Cashin says they are concentrating on raising funds for perishable items this year but are always grateful for non-perishable donations as well.

“We have a central pantry that we work from with supplies being donated from various church members and some other organisations.

Room Changes Make Hospital More Efficient Dargaville Hospital is ready to handle more challenging admissions than ever with the set-up of a dedicated resuscitation room.

Clinical lead Dr Scott Wilson joined Dargaville Hospital in November 2015 and took on the clinical lead role in January 2016. Dr Wilson said it was immediately evident that the acute assessment unit within the hospital could be transformed to allow resuscitation on patients to be carried out more easily and safely.

“We started talking about it in January. The concept was agreed in February, then building was carried out in June and July. We used our DHB builders for the work, which ensured every dollar spent benefited the patient. We were able to purchase some much needed equipment, and the new resuscitation room was completed last month.”

“There was too much clutter. The nurse manager and myself evaluated everything in the room and anything non-essential has now been moved elsewhere.”

The resuscitation room development contributes to Dr Wilson’s goal of making Dargaville Hospital as capable of handling high acuity patients as Kaitaia or Bay of Islands Hospitals.

“We are slowly extending our capabilities and starting to keep quite complex cardiac and respiratory cases which in the past would have been transferred to Whangarei. I’m trying to reach for equality with Bay of Islands and Kaitaia hospitals. I want someone who walks through the door at Dargaville to expect the same standard of care as they would in any of Northlands other Rural Hospitals.”

“We have new non-invasive ventilation equipment and a new defibrilator is coming. I wanted our resuscitation room to be fit for purpose. We’ve managed several emergencies within the new room, and feedback from paramedics and

staff is that the environment is much more appropriate.

The modifications also created much needed space to enable the video-link to the Intensive Care Unit at Whangarei Hospital to be implemented.”

Dr Wilson said the freedom of movement in the resuscitation room means up to eight staff can work on resuscitating a patient “without tripping over each other.”

With one bed in the room now instead of two, it also enables enhanced privacy for patients and their families.

The resuscitation room is one of three success stories for Dargaville Hospital in 2016. Teleconferencing has been bridging the distance between Dargaville, other hospitals and rural medical workers, while upskilling of nurses is enhancing the ability to manage complex cases in-house with less need to transfer to Whangarei Hospital.

Dr Wilson commented “This time last year we were transferring twice as many patients to Whangarei as we were transferring back. That trend has now been reversed with many more cases being treated in Dargaville Hospital, and a push for early transfer back of patients from Whangarei and Auckland”. Dr Wilson acknowledged anxiety in the Kaipara community about what level of service Dargaville Hospital can provide, “we’re not going backward: we’re pushing forward,” Dr Wilson said.

The other structural change to Dargaville Hospital is the pharmacy coming in-house.

“The pharmacy is going to move into the physiotherapy site within the hospital which is good for patients who can immediately fill their prescriptions and means they don’t have to drive into town,” Northland DHB Dargaville physiotherapist Marion Steven said. Her physiotherapy service will now share space with Occupational Therapy within the hospital.

Dargaville Hospital Dargaville Hospital has a 12 bed general ward, a four bed maternity ward, five bed regional drug and alcohol detoxification unit, on-site laboratory, radiology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social workers, community nursing, Mental Health nurses and visiting consultants.

Dargaville Medical Centre has emergency clinics between 9am–12pm on a Saturday and Sunday (and public holidays). They also provide an after- hours emergency GP service.

Where It’s Easy to Live Road Works for November 2016

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District.

Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction.

With the roads starting to dry up as we head into the summer months please be aware of the increased dust nuisance from travelling on unsealed roads. Please drive courteously and adjust your speed accordingly (drive to the conditions).

Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during November include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and the clearing of culvert inlets and outlets. Maintenance patrols have been replacing many reflectorized edge marker pegs and this will continue as well as replacements and repairs to road signs.

Area specific works planned during November include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the district; • Maintenance grading throughout the district when conditions are suitable; • Unsealed/sealed pothole repairs throughout the district; • Roadside vegetation spraying – all rural roads; • Water table restoration – Bell and Agnes Streets, Notorious West, Otioro and Mangawhai Heads Roads and Glinks Gully; and • Pre-reseal repairs – Paparoa-Oakleigh, Tinopai, Ruawai, and Waihue areas.

We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of November if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue.

Sound of The Nukes  by Ayla Miller

The wildest ukulele band to come out of West Auckland are on their way to get up close and personal with the Dargaville community.

The Nukes have a reputation for providing reckless and riveting performances and are bringing their unique sound, appropriately, to the ‘wild west’.

The band is made up of Dave ‘Fingers of Fire’ Parker, David ‘Snapper’ Thiele and Benjamin ‘Country Boy’ Collier and describe their sound as a blend of folk, bluegrass, reggae and post punk, all out of their three ukuleles.

David Thiele has a strong connection to Dargaville having bought a house and lived there for five years.

“Dargaville feels like home to me,” he said.

“At first I couldn’t stand the place but now I really miss it and I have to

visit every few months.”

The band are currently touring the country and sharing their skills through workshops for primary school students.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in the beautiful Anzac Theatre. We love those kind of intimate gigs.

“We are constantly on tour, loving it and spreading the aroha that is  The Nukes will share their unique ukulele sounds with the Dargaville community the ukulele.”

The Nukes will be holding three from 1.45pm on Wednesday, November primary school workshops at the 23. They will perform at the Anzac Dargaville Town Hall from 10am, which Theatre from 7.30pm that evening. will be followed by an all school show Tickets are available from Eventfinda. 

Dargaville Veterinary Centre have welcomed dedicated companion animal vet Doug Passmore onto their team this week, expanding the level of service the business can provide to the Northern Wairoa.

Mr Passmore, originally from South Africa, will be the first dedicated companion animal vet at Dargaville Veterinary Centre and he says he is looking forward to becoming part of the community.

“Dargaville has got a really good reputation within the veterinary industry,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to put my skills and what I have learnt into practice.”

Mr Passmore graduated in 2000 from the University of Pretoria and started his own practice in the United Kingdom.

When he and his wife, who is originally from Whangarei, returned to New Zealand Mr Passmore spent time working as an emergency vet in Christchurch before working for an animal pharmaceutical company in Wellington, but says he is pleased to be getting back into the hands-on work. “I have missed the interaction with owners

and with the animals. With this work you can make a difference every day.”

Dargaville Veterinary Centre manager Todd Skudder says Mr Passmore will bring a wealth of knowledge to the practice and the Northern Wairoa area.

“From our point of view it is important that we provide a high level of service that is right across the whole business.

We have dedicated large animal vets so it is equally important to have someone to solely focus on the small animals as well.”

Mr Passmore says it is the variety of work that is most exciting about this role and being able to diagnose problems and treat them.

“One day you are a dentist, the next day you are a surgeon, the next day you are an ultrasonographer and the next day a neurologist.

“I am looking forward to being able to add to the service provided to the community.” 

Not all rescues necessary The chick season is well under way which has created a small problem for the Centre because too many young birds are being rescued by children that don’t have to be.

When a chick fledges they hop around the branches and sometimes fall on the ground. If you find a young bird on the ground try placing it back into the tree first. If there is a chance that a cat will get it then ring us so we can advise you what to do next.

Last week I received a call about a number of seagulls (Red Bill Gull) with leg damage. It sounds like a boat owner at the Whangarei Heads has come up with an idea how to stop the gulls landing on his boat while on the mooring - he has been setting rat traps to catch the gulls.

Many members of the public don’t realise that the seagull is totally protected and has the same protection as a kiwi, harming or killing a seagull could see you face a $100,000 fine. It would not be hard to check a boat to see if this is happening so my advice is look for some other way to deter the gulls.

If anyone sees this sort of thing going on call the Department of Conservation, or phone our Centre and something will be done about it.

With the warmer weather starting to show the next thing we will start getting calls about the Little Blue Penguins coming to shore on the beaches. It is nesting time for the penguins, so many adult birds come out of the water to rest and re-oil their feathers.

Never pick a penguin up and try to put it back into the water. As soon as you touch one your hand will remove their water proof coat .They will swim away because they are frightened by humans only to go a short distance off shore and drown.

If you see one standing on the beach just put it at the high tide line in the long grass. It will rest for a few days then early in the morning or late at night go back to the water.

If one is injured keep it warm and dry as putting it in water or wrapping it in a wet towel will kill it.

When finished fishing for the day get rid of any old bait at sea, please don’t discard your bait at the boat ramps.

You will see a film on the water at boat ramps which is contamination coming from boat engines and from boat trailers and that film removes any water proofing from a bird. This is why at time you will see a Bird standing near a ramp trying to dry itself, then it has to re- water proof its feathers before being able to fly away.

‘Reel’ women fish  by Ayla Miller

Pahi Boating and Fishing Club are holding their second-ever ladies-only fishing competition on December 3 with women able to try their luck over the whole Kaipara Harbour.

Club commodore Mike Donald says the club were motivated to hold the event for the first time last year when it was requested by some fisher-women.

“It worked out well last year and every one had a really good time,” Mike says.

Men are allowed to take women out on their boats if needed but they are forbidden from helping them fish.

“It’s a really cool day, a chance to enjoy some social time and catch some big fish.”

There will be the same categories as the regular competitions including heaviest snapper and kahawai as well as prizes for other exceptional catches on the day. Contestants will launch

their boats at the Pahi Fishing and Boating Club and can fish from 7am with the final weighin at 4pm on the deck of the clubrooms where spot prizes will be awarded.

Mike says this is the perfect chance for women to get out on the water and show the men what they can do and there are still some spaces available on the boats.

Tickets are $20 for an adult and $10 for children. Tickets are available from Mike at Maungaturoto Auto Centre, the Paparoa Hotel and the Cruiser Cafe.

With a history going back to Roman times, the riotous fun of the traditional Christmas pantomime has gathered a whole lot of strange customs along the way to the present day.

As the Dargaville Little Theatre’s annual pantomime ‘Jack and the Giant Kumara Vine’ comes off a stellar opening weekend, it’s interesting to see how this comic artform was one of the first examples of people defying gender roles in theatre.

Traditionally, now women performed in theatre companies — in the time of Shakespeare, for example, even Juliet and Cleopatra were men in dresses!

But the emerging ‘commedia del arte’ folk theatre, developed during the Italian renaissance, was all about turning the world upside down. When elements of this art from, which included mime, clowning and slapstick — were blended

 Jack and the Kumara Vine is a hit in Dargaville Little Theatre

with British style theatre, women took the chance to get involved. After all, the first pantomimes were in the spirit of their Roman ancestors — dedicated to Bacchus, god of wine! A little anarchy and poking fun at the social order was expected.

That’s why when Jack — the famous storybook character — comes on stage in DLT’s latest performance, he is played by a female actor. The hero of a pantomime has always been portrayed by a woman since the 1700s, no matter if ‘he’ is Robin Hood, Aladdin, Jack or Peter Pan. Similarly, pantomimes often

feature a clearly male (complete with mustache and beard in some cases) ‘dame’ — the hero’s mother, a queen or even the good fairy played by a man.

With a fun and action-packed show that’s delighting the crowds, Dargaville Little Theatre are carrying on a tradition that goes back to the very first blow struck for workplace equality — even if it was likely struck with a novelty pie to the face.

More than that, though, Jack and the Giant Kumara Vine is jolly good fun for the whole family, with two weeks left to run and tickets on sale now. 

Protecting the Fairy Terns  by Ann Morgan

Laura Patience is the Fairy Tern warden for the Mangawhai Wildlife Refuge and with a team of dedicated volunteers will be monitoring and protecting the New Zealand Fairy Tern over the summer period.

“These guys are pretty special. It is believed there are only around 40 of them left in the world, and a significant proportion of that number are here on our doorstep.

“Over the past couple of weeks, they have been making scrapes (the fairy tern version of a nest is a shallow scrape in the sand) and breeding,” says Laura.

“It’s really exciting to think that the population might soon be increasing, but for this to happen we really need the community to help out.”

Laura says dogs and kite-boarders are a fairy tern’s worst nightmare, even friendly ones, so please keep dogs off the wildlife refuge.

When boating in the estuary, be mindful that the birds might be trying to forage in that area and if there is a kite-boarder in the estuary, the fairy terns are likely to leave their nests as they perceive the kites as hawks and fly away when they see

one, leaving their nests exposed to the elements. “We really appreciate your support. If ever you see us out

Lloyd Rooney and his partner Michael Fraser have added the Mangawhai cafe to their chain of eateries including the Cove Cafe in Waipu and Quay Cafe at the Whangarei Town Basin. ”The opening last week was fantastic.

We are stoked with how the locals came out in force and that was much appreciated. It is a brand new team, kitchen and menu, and to open a restaurant and be full with customers and have no problems is amazing,” said Lloyd.

“I have Craig Estick as my new chef — I call him the Mary Poppins of kitchens, and we have created a restaurant with the great modern Kiwi barbecue at the forefront.”

Sharing is the name of the game, where customers are encouraged to mix and match their entrees and mains to be shared together.

Customers can choose from the smoker, the grill, the wood fired pizza oven or the rotisserie, for meats and fish, and then choose sides and condiments to match.
