Farm rally salutes town support u by Paul Campbell

Climate change legislation, carbon emissions, water policy and tree-planting, were all drivers of last week’s farmer’s rally with a parade through Dargaville that event organisers say was impressive because of the town support they received.

“It was a great turnout of about 300 farmers and rural support businesses,” said organiser Mark Cameron “We also felt for some farmers attending who felt life had just become about death and taxes, and it was hugely good to see the support we received from Dargaville businesses and also the local people.

They gave us a very animated reception.”

The Dargaville rally was reflected by a same-day farmers’ march on parliament, labelled by Regional Development Minister Shane Jones, as an action by “rednecks.”

“His, was an abhorrent display,” said Mr Cameron. “He was unable to come up with an intellectual response, so he chose to pontificate and do nothing

but attack. He made a fool of himself.”

Mr Cameron stressed that the rally was “not about political point-scoring, but a show of unity and support for a rural community” he says has been excluded from meaningful dialogue over legislation affecting their livelihoods.

“All this legislation does is throw rural New Zealand under the bus with the cost of compliance.”

Another major concern at both the Dargaville and Wellington events was the government’s ‘billion trees’ policy, which is considered as encroaching on productive farmland.

Sophie Ogden of Dargaville is keen to see kids learn and grow through the medium of performance. The Circus Kumarani veteran is set to pass on skills and inspiration in time for the summer as she and the team bring out a new series of classes for both preschool and young adult students.

Sophie says that aside from the fun to be had, learning about things like balance, motor skills and music, the new under-fives’ movement and balance class is also about family time and building self-confidence.

“Movement and balance are perfect for toddlers who are curious about exploration, singing, dancing, learning and playing,” she says.

Ruawai teenager Bekks Coll is doing in real life what many young people can only simulate on popular video game NBA2K20 and has been selected to represent New Zealand in a top youth basketball tourney in Australia.

At just 12 years old, Bekks has been selected for the U14 Girls HoopNation team, to play at the Eltham tournament in Melbourne in January. Her mum, Diane, is proud of her achievements since early last year.

“She has played in the Ruawai college year 7/8 team, as well as the AIMS games three-a-side team. She got selected by Kaipara basketball to go on the Cameron Academy Melbourne tour in June.

She was also selected to attend a basketball clinic in Whangarei with famous player Steven Adams.

NEST – Jasmine Clapperton Jasmine Clapperton loves running around after her very energetic and cheeky two-yearold Lucas – his energy and vivaciousness can be exhausting in the best way possible.

And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

At just 27 weeks pregnant with Lucas, Jasmine started feeling pains in her stomach and back – but was hopeful they were just her body having Braxton Hicks (false labour pains).

At the insistence of her partner, Jasmine, who had been resting and waiting for the pains to subside, headed to Whangarei Hospital to get checked even though she was sure it could not have been labour – it was just too early.

“Eight years ago, my sister had contracted meningitis and was flown by the rescue chopper – my lasting memory of her being so ill was being bundled into the chopper and flown to Starship.”

Her sister has since made a full recovery – thanks to the time-saving abilities of the rescue chopper.

Regardless of her fear, Jasmine boarded the chopper and credits the crew for keeping her calm under such stressful circumstances.

“I was stressed out, in labour, and worried – and fearful of flying – but they kept me calm and talked to me the whole flight. They were amazing and before long we were landing at Auckland Hospital,” she says.

On arrival at the hospital, her worst nightmare was confirmed – she had gone into spontaneous labour. Within a short time, steroids needed to strengthen baby’s lungs had been administered and she was told her was being flown to Auckland by the Northland Rescue Chopper – and it was on its way.With time of the essence, Jasmine knew she had to get on the chopper – but fear almost held her back.

“Within 30 minutes of landing, Lucas was born. He was just 27 weeks and four days gestation, and weighed in at only 835 grams.”

Measles travel warning stands

Maungaturoto’s Riverview Rest Home dementia unit is now officially under construction with framing of the 14-bed facility unit being pre-nailed off-site ready to be delivered around Christmas for installation to get underway in the New Year.

Travel advisories are still in force for people heading to Auckland and the centre of the continuing measles outbreak with the latest figures this week showing 1,660 confirmed cases there, of a country-wide total of 2,060.

Northland has 91 cases with Kaipara's latest figure at 12. Last week two suspected measles cases from the north caused an alert at an Auckland public event, and the Ministry of Health has issued guidelines accordingly.

In regard to mass gatherings, concerts and sporting events it says although the ministry hasn’t recommended organisers cancel events, it suggests organisers work closely with their local health boards.

“Travelling to a place with a serious measles outbreak means people who aren’t immune and have early symptoms of measles such as fever,

cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a rash should not travel.” It adds people should heed ministry advice about taking children and babies to Auckland.

It also advises that visitors travelling to New Zealand should be fully immunised for measles.

“If you need additional vaccination, it should be administered at least two weeks before arriving in New Zealand.

Remember, people who aren’t immune and have early symptoms shouldn’t travel.

“The ministry is regularly reviewing this advice and expects it will remain in place as long as there are serious outbreaks occurring.”

Matakohe’s historic churchyard has received a significant upgrade ahead of plans to connect the area to the Kaipara-wide cycle trail, and just as tourist season begins.

Mayor Jason Smith attended alongside Deputy Mayor and Otamatea Ward councillors Mark Vincent and Anna Curnow. Chairman of the Matakohe Community Group, Nick Tetzner, made a short presentation detailing how tourism infrastructure funding made it possible to transform the old groundskeeper’s cottage into public restrooms in keeping with the area’s historic character. The building is finished in the style of the adjacent Matakohe Pioneer Church, itself from 1867. It is surrounded by a large heritage rose garden and faces the restored historic settler’s cemetery.

“The tourism infrastructure authorities, in conjunction with council, have been very supportive, making this a simple and smooth process,” said Mr Tetzner. The Mayor agreed. “For a place like Matakohe, where people from all over the country and the world are coming all the time — it’s very important that we have these facilities.”

He thanked the Matakohe Community Group personally for taking leadership on this issue before Deputy Mayor Anna Curnow cut the ribbon, opening what may be the most picturesque public convenience in New Zealand. ¢

Hall is back in business Despite thousands of dollars’ worth of damage done to the Paparoa War Memorial Hall in a Labour Weekend vandalism attack, the community has combined to clear up the worst of the damage and the hall is back in business serving a variety of community events.

However, there are still visible signs of the attack, and the hall committee is coping with the aftermath while awaiting advice from the hall’s insurers to bring it back up to full use again.

“We have had huge local support, and all the glass has been replaced by a local tradesman, and others have also done great service,” says hall treasurer, Robin Skelton.

The insurance excess of $2,500 has now been covered by local individual and community group donations.

The hall committee is waiting for details from the insurance company to tackle repairs and replacements to the hall doorways.

Dargaville’s Kaipara Tamariki Collective has assembled some big names to assist them with hosting their annual Silver Fern Farms Whanau Fun Day at the town’s swimming pool complex, with games, challenges, activities and attractions for all ages on December 7.

Getting involved are Sport Northland, the Kaipara District Council, Silver Fern Farms, Te Ha Oranga, the Whanau Focus Centre, Oranga Tamariki, Te Uri O Hau, Circus Kumarani, and of course, this year’s hosts, the Kauri Coast Community Swimming Pool.

As Sport Northland’s Roxanne Kelly says “it’s all about bringing families together and celebrating some good times. Get outdoors, get active, create

some good memories.” It’s a sentiment shared by another organiser. “You can’t go wrong with the sun above, family around, music playing, food to eat and a pool to cool down in! So bring the family along and enjoy a day of fun.”

The event is free of charge from 1 until 4 pm, directly following the Dargaville Santa parade. Organisers advise bringing a towel and swimmingapproved clothing. ¢

December 7 will see the main street of Dargaville transformed with the sights and sounds of the holiday season, as Santa comes to town with a little help from the local Lions club. At the same time, a special float will commemorate the 100th anniversary of an aviation milestone for the town.

Lions club organisers Noel Moran and Brian Nisbet invite those who wish to get involved to take advantage of the weeks remaining before the big day to join in the festive spirit. The opening night of the Dargaville little Theatre’s double production of John Godber’s plays Bouncers and Shakers has proven to be a comedy hit, with plenty of laughs rocking a full house last Thursday.

The director of the challenging double billing, which follows the lives of the cocktail waitresses and doormen at a trendy nightclub, says that it’s a big call for actors to span the range of characters and emotions on display in the British playwright’s most famous work. Moreover, from the reaction of the crowd it definitely all came together on the night.

Roxanne Kelly, who returned as director after an absence from the chair of more than two decades, chose a production, which didn’t just challenge her cast. It’s also full of edgy humour and adult situations, as one would expect from a tale of the seedy side of nightlife. The layout of the theatre was changed to compensate, with many patrons enjoying a table right onstage

amid the action. One male theatregoer was even singled out as the object of some of the female cast’s admiration, leading to some big laughs — just as the playwright intended. The artistry of both the writing, direction and acting in this double billing is not only in sharp wits and wry one-liners, however. It’s also in the way that all of the eight actors present moments of honesty and vulnerability in between the crass, comic and all-too-relatable stories of life amid the drunk and disorderly.

Bouncers and Shakers continues its run this week with three more shows available to view. Like the very best examples of the comic genre, it will definitely make you laugh. It will also make you think, which makes it even more worth watching. ¢

Tribute to artist with big heart Mangawhai and the wider Kaipara artistic community are celebrating the life and mourning the loss of one of their most active, engaged and creative personalities this week, with the passing of award-winning visual artist Lynn Middleton.

Ruatuna, the Coates family homestead and birthplace of the first New Zealander democratically elected as prime minister, has undergone an extensive renovation programme and will be accessible for a rare public open day this Saturday, November 23.

Tangiteroria man Peter Wilson is teaming up with Dargaville’s Methodist Church to raise funds for a ‘peaceful revolution’ taking place in the very poor heartland of Bangladesh.

At Kailakuri, in a remote part of the Madhupur region, a small health clinic is teaching locals how to take care of their own. At least 100 outpatients a day come to receive treatment. It was the life work of Kiwi doctor Edric Baker.

That’s why Peter Wilson, himself a worker in developing-world infrastructure, is getting behind the effort.

To help, he’s showing a film relevant to his own experiences with the power of goodwill in disadvantaged nations.

The film he’s picked to raise funds for Kailakuri is Soldiers Without Guns,

“With the recent repairs and maintenance work completed, the open day will provide the perfect opportunity for people to visit this amazing heritage property,” says Heritage New Zealand assets manager, Natalie McCondach.

“Ruatuna has been cherished for generations of the Coates family and has remained mostly unchanged from its earliest times. It’s a treasure trove of stories and collection items spanning over 140 years.”

The Category 1 historic place, and the birthplace of Gordon Coates will be

the story of the Kiwi peacekeepers in Bougainville, Papua. These New Zealanders pacified a war zone armed only with guitars and good intentions after a mining debacle sparked a civil war.

Soldiers Without Guns is being shown at 11.45am on Sunday, November 24, at the Dargaville Methodist Church, with a shared luncheon followed by the film. Bring a plate and $10 or more for the fundraiser; all money raised will go to Doctor Baker’s ongoing legacy in Bangladesh. ¢

The Dargaville Community Development Board has completed a move to new premises, expanding their options to foster growth and positive change in the west Kaipara town.

After four years in walk-up offices above the town’s Muddy Waters art gallery, the DCDB’s Lorraine Davidson says that the move was a necessary step forward to continue a growing list of good works.

“We’ve moved to the main street of Dargaville to be closer to our constituents and the business community,” she says.

“With the added bonus of greater visibility, ease of access for people coming to talk to us, and the option to share our space with those who share our goals. In the future, this could mean the establishment of a cooperative coworking space we can share with others.

We’re also discussing with the Chamber of Commerce the provision of a ‘hot desk’ for the business sector.”

The new offices, in Fosters Arcade, off Victoria Street in Dargaville house four part-time staff members to support the board’s desired outcomes, and maintain an open-door policy five days a week. Their portfolios encompass the development of projects and initiatives throughout the town; a retirement village, a co-working facility, the promotion and marketing of Dargaville and its environs, a website and social

media presence, community events, CCTV security, business support and management of community housing in Dargaville and Ruawai.

That’s a hefty commitment and an extensive list of achievements for the four years since the inception of the DCDB. p The Wellsford Volunteer Fire Brigade donned their orange hazard suits last week for their training with hazardous substances. “We had our chief fire officer in his white hard hat putting in the hard work doing a snap rescue,” says senior fire officer Matt Railey. “We also had our newest little recruit Lukas join in for the night. His parents are station officers, so he thought he better start training early, as he has got some big shoes to fill. Hazard substance training covers a lot of different elements, including protecting the environment by keeping things out of the waterways when we are washing. We had mock patients to practise on for herbicide, pesticide and ammonia spills. “All the firefighters in the region are volunteers, and they work around their full-time jobs and give up their personal time to look after our communities. It is appreciated when the public educates themselves on safety precautions. Storing hazardous substances is one of these. The community are very supportive of our families and help wherever they can. We appreciate it very much as it encourages us in the events we face on a daily basis.”

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora This is the first Mayor’s Memo since the election and it’s my first opportunity to say THANK YOU to the voters of Kaipara – you’ve elected great councillors for me to work with around the council table, and you’ve also returned me as your mayor which is a great honour, thank you. As elected members we’re all looking forward to serving our Kaipara community. The Kaipara voter turnout was just above the national average of about 41%, so we’re in good heart as we make our start.

At the Inaugural Council Meeting on 25 October where councillors made their declarations to serve all of Kaipara District, I presented an outline of what I see for the term ahead. This is available at www.kaipara. govt.nz/mayor and you may want to take a look. Ideas about how we’ll be working for you across the district are explained, as well as some of the new approaches such as being Climate-smart Kaipara, plus our collaborative way of working with others to get the job done.

Getting the job done is a key theme for this new council, as we move forward and towards an increasing amount of investment in our ROADS. Significant capital works are in store for the year ahead as the additional PGF “Kaipara Kickstart” funds start to roll in and roll out onto our roading network. There’s also public consultation soon about improving the Dargaville Wharf so it will be capable of taking its place in a future ferry network on the Kaipara.

Time to embrace Kiwi Christmas culture u by Andy Bryenton

It’s now pretty well established that the celebrity of the Christmas season (a small child from Bethlehem, Israel) was not born in the middle of a northern winter.

In fact, with shepherds on the hillsides, a climate suited to robes and sandals, and a trio of ‘wise guys’ popping into the al fresco accommodation to deliver presents, the nativity is looking more and more like a Kiwi Christmas.

We’ve got a lot to be proud of when it comes to our Yuletide festivities. There’s another thing, of course. Old Yule, and the image of a bearded man in furs who epitomises the season with snow and a big dinner, actually refers to Odin the old Norse god (and dad of Marvel’s blondest Avenger). One of his names was Jolnir, the ‘Yule Father’ or Langbardr ‘old long beard’. The real Saint Nicholas?

He lived among pirates and sailors in Turkey, rather than carving the turkey.

So, another Christmas icon who would be up for some beach cricket and a bit of a barbecue (also invented by pirates).

We’ve lived in the shadows of frosted pine trees (a German tradition) and dancing snowmen for too long. It’s time to admit it to ourselves; a New Zealand Christmas is just better. A long, leisurely lunch sizzling over the charcoal. The best excuse ever to have a cold beer with

uncles, cousins and friends and discuss the cricket. Pohutukawas overhead and the option of a quick swim, half an hour after pudding, of course.

The kids can play with their new presents outdoors, which is a blessing for those that come with repetitive whooping and exploding sound effects (or for parents foolish enough to have bought this year’s hot item, the Baby Shark singing soft toy). Right after Christmas, our northern relatives have to head back to grim, icy workplaces in

the middle of winter. We get a couple of weeks to go fishing and finish off the leftovers.

So here’s an idea. Let’s go all out with the Kiwi trappings of Christmas at this time of year. Santa in board shorts. Festive pina coladas. Carving the Yuletide pavlova. We can export ‘midsummer Christmas’ to the north while we’re at it, and enjoy all the wintertime treats like glazed hams, plum puddings and roasted chestnuts in July for Matariki. ¢

The official game of Christmas Finally, after many decades of pre-eminence as the greatest game on sand, the official international rules of beach cricket have been set down for posterity. If you’re going to take part in the beautiful dance of tennis ball, driftwood and anything shaped like a bat this summer, take a look at the following ‘short version’.

It’s the batsman v everybody else.

There are no teams, as this will definitely degenerate into trouble, as both captains will want to have both the most athletic uncle (he could have been an All Black, but he’s got this dodgy knee) and the dog on their team at once. A new batsman is chosen by the oldest player or spectator (usually gran) on the basis of everyone getting a turn. The bowler is whoever is best at bowling a tennis ball on firm sand unless they have been going ‘for ages’ and someone else wants a throw. Each over has five balls, as this is easy to tally in the sand. If you’re not out after four overs, you have to hand over the bat anyway, but you can add another 10 to your score.

The stumps are best represented with driftwood or failing that, a chilly bin on end. It will give a resounding ‘thunk’ when struck. The batsman is obliged to run to the far end (the other chilly bin) whenever he touches the ball with the bat, even if the bowl was a weird

underarm attempt from a random sixyear-old who turned up from the next barbecue over. Catchers under the age of 12 may use the ‘one bounce, one hand’ rule to put the batsman out.

Anyone who takes a diving catch into the sea can add a free run to their batting total — 10 if they are fully clothed and 20 if they are a passing stranger, caught up in the spirit of the game. A ball retrieved by someone else’s dog definitely counts as ‘out’.

A good crack that lands in the shallows or on the front face of the dunes is a four. One that goes out into the breakers or up in the dunes and needs the dog (or small kids) sending after it is a six and out. Very competitive families can get great-uncle Steve to keep score on a bit of paper tucked into his Dan Brown novel. The winner of the match is the person with the most runs when the barbecue is called, or the sun touches the horizon, adding one’s age from the run total if you’re under 10 and adding a point for each year above 70.

Traditionally, they are awarded an extra big slice of pavlova, the one with the strawberry on it. Strangely, these rules

are not ratified by the ICC, despite being as ancient and traditional as any game played on the oval at Lord’s. ¢

Wet weather did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of a small army of volunteers from local businesses and service clubs who came together last week to raise funds for the Northland Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Event host, Lindsay West of Dargaville Ford, dismissed the wet weather as irrelevant with an enthusiastic smile.

Justifiably so; a large turnout clustered under the marquee on his forecourt, enjoying a breakfast barbecue as the buckets of donations filled up.

Numerous local businesses and clubs made the trip to deposit cheques, some of them in the thousands of dollars.

More FM’s breakfast hosts reported on the rising tide of generosity while ambulance officers, firefighters and representatives of Northpower shook buckets and stopped traffic.

Guest auctioneer Chris Fife added his best quick-fire voice to the mix, pulling in more donations with an auction including Ford Tools, sports jerseys,

and custom made items crafted by the engineers at West Coast Steelworx.

“It’s great to see so many people pitching in, despite the rain,” said Chris.

“It’s all about community, after all, and keeping that helicopter flying.”

The centrepiece for young kids and ‘big boys’ both alike was the appearance of drift racing hero Fanga Dan and his v8 Ford Mustang drift car. Modified Ford Rangers, fire trucks and ambulances filled the forecourt and attracted public attention. Preliminary results put the total raised in the Kaipara at $39,000, with more potentially to come. Envelopes have been sent to all Kaipara households as part of the appeal, extending the opportunity to give for those who missed out on the day. ¢
