p Kaipara people flocked to the races on Friday as the Dargaville Racing Club held its November meeting. The highlight of the nine-race programme was the Dargaville Cup won by Classic Rock. Racing club secretary Basil Smith says the rain stayed away during the races. Although attendance was slightly down on last year, on-track turnover was up by 20%. The club’s next meeting will be in April 2015.

The pool has operated at a loss since it opened in 2011, with usage figures and gate income below budget, combined with higher-than-expected costs for heating and water. The council has budgeted for the pool to cost ratepayers $250,000 in the 2014/15 financial year.
While the pool is located on council land, it is owned by the Kauri Coast Community Pool Trust. But earlier this year, the trust advised the council it wished to withdraw, saying that as a body made up entirely of volunteers, it did not have the resources to own and operate a significant asset.
The council then approached Sport Northland which owns Whangarei’s Aquatic Centre to see whether it would adopt a similar role in Dargaville, with the hope that its marketing and promotional skills could lead to an increase in patronage. continued on page 3 …
