New pontoon plan for Dargaville  by Paul Campbell

The first step in a project to create a water-based transport network on Kaipara Harbour by investing in wharf infrastructure is being taken with Kaipara District Council revealing design plans for a new pontoon on the river in Dargaville.

Construction of the new pontoon is expected to begin in February and to cost around $500,000.

With confirmed measles cases in the North standing at 91 as of last week, a Northland person with a confirmed case of measles attended an event in Auckland, while infectious, in effect rebounding the disease onto its early source.

Ms Miller said the redesign of the Dargaville Pontoon is a key part of Kaipara Wharves, a project that aims to create a water-based transport network on Kaipara Harbour.

“Taking advantage of the Kaipara Harbour to connect communities within our district and connect our district with Auckland, will create opportunities for tourism, as well as for passenger and freight transport,” she said.

Kaipara Wharves is one of three projects comprising Kaipara KickStart, an initiative supported by the Provincial Growth Fund to use Kaipara’s natural assets to support social, economic, environmental and cultural wellbeing for the district. Other projects include improving the district’s road network and stimulating high-value agriculture

and aquaculture. The water transport initiative was promoted by Mayor Jason Smith as part of the $20.39m PGF investment announced earlier this year.

Ms Miller encouraged members of the community to attend an information session and have their say.

“We want to get feedback from the community before we finalise the plans and start detailed design work,” she said.

A drop-in information session for ideas and feedback will be held from 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday, November 20 at the Northern Wairoa Memorial Hall.

The Northland District Health Board has said earlier that the measles cases in Northland were contracted from the major outbreak in Auckland.

The DHB says a person from Northland attended an event in Auckland on October 27 and may have passed measles onto other people there. Northland medical officer of health, Dr Catherine Jackson, has issued a further measles alert and advice. Measles starts a bit like the flu with fevers, cough, runny nose, and sore red eyes with a rash appearing on day three to five.

“You are most at risk if you’re not immune to measles, either because you haven’t been vaccinated or you haven’t had the disease previously,” Dr Jackson says.

“Anyone over the age of 50 years is considered immune as they would have been exposed to the virus as a child.

“Talk to your doctor or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice.

“If you do start to develop symptoms that could be measles, ring ahead to your doctor or emergency department and let them know you may have measles — this is to prevent potentially infecting others in the waiting room.”

Vaccination with the MMR vaccine offers the best protection. One dose will prevent measles in 95 per cent of people while having two doses will protect 99 per cent of people who have the vaccine.

NEST – Carol Thompson Carol Thompson couldn’t shake her indigestion – despite taking a remedy and waiting for the discomfort to subside. She has woken up with the pain and knew if she waited it out, it should go away.

“There was no way I thought I was having a heart attack, it was such a big shock. They worked on me for a short time and then told me they were going to medivac me out,” she says.

The pain kept on and the pressure intensified.

With indigestion still thought of the cause, Carol carried on with her morning and her husband started to get ready for golf – but he grew more concerned and fortunately, didn’t head off to play.

What felt like just moments later, the Northland Rescue Chopper arrived from its base in Whangarei and flew Carol directly to Auckland Hospital where a surgical team was awaiting her arrival. Six stents were surgically placed into her heart.

“I had been out for dinner the night before and I’d had a couple of cocktails so I thought it might have been caused by that. Now and then I get indigestion so I wasn’t too worried to begin with.”

Carol still can’t believe she ended up using the services of the chopper as a patient.

But her husband had another idea – not liking what he saw, he informed his wife that he didn’t think it was indigestion and that she was in bigger trouble than that – he thought she was having a heart attack.

“I have supported the rescue helicopters for so long – and you just never know when you might need it, or someone you know might need it.”

But Carol does have a wee giggle to tell.

On arrival, the hospital confirmed their fears – which Carol says was a big shock for her.

“Six or seven years ago, after I had donated during the appeal, I won a chance for a ride in the helicopter as part of the campaign. I was so excited but I couldn’t use the flight as I had something on that day – I was so disappointed. But years later, here I am getting my flight after all, just not in the way I had intended it to be!”

National award for kauri research

Te Roroa Commercial Development Company has been working to stop the spread of kauri dieback disease, and now their Kauri Dieback Response Plan has won a top award from the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Te Roroa representative Snow Tane says that being recognised at the 2019 Biosecurity Awards provides added inspiration to carry on.

“Simply being nominated was huge. Then to actually win; it’s really supported our commitment and the efforts of those who are out there in the forest helping. At the end of the day, it’s all about the hard work of our scientists and researchers. We need a real understanding of this disease, as that’s the first step toward a solution.” International recognition has come to the project, too, with a top scientific adviser to the Kauri Dieback Response plan invited to speak at a multi-nation conference on botany in Sardinia.

Meanwhile, effor ts to safeguard the kauri continue. Mr Tane and his team urge hikers to stay on official paths and to observe biosecurity precautions such as washing down boots at the stations provided. 

Dye testing first step to solution for leaky septic tanks Kaipara District Council is working with the Paparoa community to identify leaky septic tank systems and find a solution.

Kaipara Council Meeting Schedule

Council carried out a limited survey of septic tank systems in Paparoa in late 2018, after reports of bad smells and effluent coming from the Pahi Creek. The survey showed about half of the tanks tested had leaks, which were likely to be the cause of the pollution.

Regulatory Manager Dean Nuralli said Council was taking action to safeguard environmental health and protect waterways.

“Leaks from septic tank systems can contaminate people’s property and their neighbour’s property. Run off from the land also flows into local waterways,” he said.

“Nobody wants a leaky septic tank. The community is eager to sort the problem out, and we’re helping them to do that.”

Kaipara District Council is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) to provide community housing in Mangawhai.

The EOI is open to community housing providers that are, or could be, registered with the Community Housing Regulatory Authority.

We prefer proposals that protect the interests of existing tenants and would develop at least 24 new affordable housing units that consider the New Zealand Urban Design Protocol.

Dargaville link to life-saving knowledge

Rural protest rally steps up

Dargaville hospital has been connected to all of Northland’s hospital facilities via a new kind of remote diagnosis and assistance tool called RITA — the Rapid Information Telehealth Assessment system.

Tractors, trucks, quad bikes and all manner of rural business vehicles are set to parade through the main streets of Dargaville at lunchtime on Thursday as part of a major rural protest rally at Dargaville racecourse.

Using a suite of advanced optics both fixed to the ceiling in the acute assessment room and on a mobile unit, RITA allows doctors and surgeons from far-off hospitals view a patient’s condition, make a diagnosis and even assist with advice in emergency situations. It means that a specialist in any field of medicine is at the end of the interactive video line no matter what the illness or injury presented.

“The new set-up in the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) at Dargaville Hospital supersedes the community purchased mobile video conferencing unit, which was fundraised by the Kaipara community Health Trust, and which is still in use in other parts of the hospital,” says Northland District Health Board spokesperson Paula Martin. The generous donation of this existing unit has already proved instrumental in aiding with patient’s care.

Dargaville Hospital Operations Manager Jen Thomas says “The staff are very grateful for this technology that provides a high calibre picture and means we can locally manage unwell patients during their critical phase. It has the potential to save lives.”

“We will have the event led by a pilot vehicle, and it will be supervised by parade marshals, with public and participant safety a paramount factor,” said rally organiser, Ruawai dairy farmer Mark Cameron. The parade will proceed through town via Normanby Street to a turning point near Farmlands before returning back the same way.

“We have received support for the Dargaville rally from as far away as Pukekohe and Kaitaia,” said Mark, who’s working with co-organiser David Cole who farms at Te Kopuru. The pair expect up to 300 farmers and people representing rural support industries and small businesses at the Dargaville event.

“However, with indications from outside the immediate region — this could grow substantially,” said Mark.

Banding together for health Cricket season starts right  by Andy Bryenton

Practitioners of a variety of medical disciplines are joining forces to bring a ‘whole mind, whole body’ approach to wellness to Kaiwaka. Members of the Kaiwaka Health Collective are introducing themselves to the public with a gala open day on November 10, at the town’s St John Hall.

“It was an idea that formed in the mind of myself and a couple of other like-minded practitioners,” says Cherie Gwilliam, a qualified naturopath who is already well known in the eastern Kaipara. “We decided that we should join forces to better serve our community, and from there — the ball was rolling!”

A core of professionals with complementary skills quickly formed as the word went around.

Cherie says that major support in beginning the process was the Otamatea St John Committee, who went out of their way to provide accommodation for the new collective in the old St John hall, even going so far as to make renovations to see the rooms fit for purpose.

It all comes to a culmination  Members of the Kaiwaka Health Collective — stronger together, and able to provide on Sunday, November 10, with interlinking assistance what Cherie is calling “the first of many such open days planned for our pulsing and more. It’s a great chance collective”. She will be joined by colour to consult with many holistic wellness and art therapy practitioner Christine, professionals in one place, to explore Reiki master Diane, fellow naturopaths any questions about your wellness, Lieke and Julie-Ann, as well as experts mental and physical, and to learn some in Shiatsu massage, pressure point new things. 

Good news comes in threes this week for fans of cricket; over and above the gorgeous weather as the codes change for the new season — there are glad tidings for local players young and old.

Not that you’d call top Northland cricketer and Dargaville alumni Bert Horner ‘old’; the 53-year veteran who has been selected for the New Zealand Over-50s cricket team. He turned on a winning performance in this year’s provincial tourney, including a high score of 79 not out. He’ll join a roll call of other top masters-level cricketers in South Africa for the Over50s Cricket World Cup. When asked if he has plans to retire soon, Horner said that he was ‘still competing against these younger guys, so why should I stop playing?’ Dargaville and his current club Maungakaramea wish him the best of luck on the world stage.

Meanwhile, ANZ bank is offering to kit out young Kaipara cricket players with gear and also offering the chance to take part in a Black Caps game this season. ANZ Head of Sponsorship Sue McGregor says the bank’s 10-year commitment to supporting grass-roots cricket comes from understanding the value of team sport.

This Christmas season, Ray White will continue its popular tradition of giving with the return of A little Ray of giving. The inspiring Christmas campaign will see Ray White Dargaville partner with Ronald McDonald House Charities to help disadvantaged people who may need a little extra light in their festive season.

The Ray White team are calling on the local community to embrace the giving season and dig deep for children who need it most.

“This is the fifth year that we’ve run A little Ray of giving, and we want 2019 to be our biggest year yet. When you see our Christmas tree go up, we urge everyone who is able to bring in a gift in for those families who are less fortunate,” said Dargaville local and principal, Jean Johnson.

“The gift drive is a way to help put a smile on the face of anyone who may need some extra cheer at this time of year, and it’s as simple as can be. All you need to do is wrap up your present and drop it under the tree into our office with reception. Those who wish to donate a gift just need to inform the Ray White Dargaville team if the gift is for a male or female and nominate an age group.”

Ray White Dargaville located at 6 Poto Street, Dargaville will have their special giving tree in their front window and will be collecting gifts from December 2 2019.

“It’s a really simple way to put a smile on the face of someone who might otherwise go without this Christmas,” said Dargaville branch administrator Lee Cocurullo, adding that just a small gift can make the biggest difference to families who are struggling at an expensive time of year. Ray White has run this initiative across Australia and New

Kaipara bodybuilders Donna and Nigel Randell have finished competition this year with victories in the World Fitness Federation bodybuilding championship, as well as four first places in the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association NZ finals.

“It’s a culmination of a busy year with competitions almost back to back,” said Nigel.

Dedication, mental discipline, lots of training and a carefully controlled diet are some of the factors needed to reach the top levels of competition, the couple says. Added to the regime of exercise and nutrition, the competitions themselves can be challenging feats of endurance; Nigel describes a tough day on stage as “the equivalent of 10 workouts at once.”

For many years, the Randells have fitted in their sport around the demands of running a motorcycle workshop and have often travelled overseas to compete in international events. The gymnasium they have built in their own home is currently rated as the ‘top bodybuilding gym in New Zealand’ thanks to their record of victories in competition.

Just part of the tally for 2019 reads as follows: For Nigel, the NABBA Auckland first place in the masters (50+) category, and best physique.

25 years of community spirit Founded a quarter-century ago, The Ruawai Promotions and Development Group (RPDG) has been doing what its name suggests for many years — promoting the riverside town of Ruawai.

In 1994, what up until then had been the Business Association of Ruawai changed their name and struck out in a fresh direction, says group member Johannes Wessel.

“Under the chairmanship of Bruce Crompton, assisted by an active committee we have completed several goals, including arranging a gala centennial for our town,” says Johannes.

“The first thing you notice coming into town is the welcome sign. It features a large shag on a colourful background of sunset. Before the name Ruawai appeared on the map, this area was called Shag Creek — beautiful sunsets are a common feature on the Ruawai Flats.”

In the centre of town on the Village Green, the gazebo is the main feature.

The result of many years planning and historical research, inside, you can see Ruawai, Our Story, showing the history of the Ruawai Flats in text and photographs. Then there’s the beautification of the foreshore at the end of Wharf Road. The Northern Wairoa River is at its widest here just before it runs into the Kaipara Harbour.

“If weather conditions are good — this is a great place for a picnic,” Johannes said.

“The Ruawai Flats are protected from flooding by a series of historic stopbanks. These make the flats New Zealand’s biggest man-made feature

above water. Here is where you can enjoy another project by RPDG. The top of the stopbank has been made into a walk/ cycleway. It’s a great place for some exercise by way of walking or cycling and enjoying the views over the river on one side and the Ruawai Flats on the other.

A fun run/cycle is held on the stopbank early in the new year.”

The RPDG organises Ruawai’s Christmas programme including a popular float parade, mailbox decorating contest, a free sausage sizzle in the evening on the Village Green and other seasonal fun and games. The group also sponsors the Ruawai Rambler, a quarterly newsletter for Ruawai and the surrounding area, which is edited by Johannes. These are but a few of the achievements during the  Ruawai is proud of its heritage and positive about its future, thanks in part to a very active development and past 25 years and the Ruawai promotions group group have more in store.

Cinematic creators, actors, editors, friends and family gathered at Dargaville’s Anzac Theatre recently for the awards screening of 2019’s Northland Short Film Competition. This comes just after the release of locally shot, critically acclaimed feature film Bellbird has put mid-north cinema in the spotlight.

Mayor Jason Smith presented the awards to eight finalists, across categories ranging from entertainment value to scriptwriting, editing to audio.

Along with competition organiser Eryn Wilson-Collins, the mayor was full of praise for the abilities of our local cinematographers.

“I’d like to congratulate everyone for the creativity we’ve seen on screen today,” he said. “It’s an amazing crop, of creative talent from all across Northland.

Thanks to the theatre for supporting those who are telling our stories.”

parade through town. This year there’s more on the agenda, with the NW Lions hosting a high tea and fancy hat day to benefit Alzheimer’s New Zealand at 2pm on November 17, at the Lion’s Hall in Hokianga Road. All are welcome, and there will be prizes for creative and outrageous hats.

Following this, the Lions will also run a Trivial Pursuit evening for teams of four, with supper, raffles and big prizes for brain-teaser solving bright sparks.

Mangawhai’s brand new fire station is unique among fire brigade headquarters worldwide. That’s because this new home for the town’s firefighting volunteers has been blessed with a pair of cultural taonga, designed to soothe the minds and souls of those who have witnessed disasters and tragedies.

Elder representatives of Ngati Whatua attended the opening of the Mangawhai fire station in late October, recounting the tradition of the Mauri and Manea stones. These two sculpted and blessed stones represent the male and female essence or life force, respectively. From ancient times, it has been traditional for all important buildings to have a Mauri stone buried in the foundations, and a Manea stone in a place of prominence where it can be seen and touched by those using the building.

As Te Runanga Ngati Whatua relates it: ‘the Mauri stone is infused with ancient karakia, which renders it extremely restrictive tapu (sacred). It is then buried deep under the foundation of a new building to sustain the Mauri  The Manea stone, representative of female life energy, remains visible and open to the touch, while the Mauri stone is buried in the foundations to offer protection to the new fire station at Mangawhai

(energy and essence) of the land for the purpose of which it is being built. This offers protection to the building and all who work in it.’ Meanwhile, the Manea stone is a literal touchstone. Those who have seen or felt strong emotional trauma are encouraged to touch the stone, sending negative energies down to the Mauri stone and hence into the centre of the earth, where even solid rocks themselves are purified and reborn.

This concept is one which is not isolated to traditional Maori belief.

Special foundation stones and stones at the entrance to buildings to defuse

negative energy are common the Norse, Celtic, ancient Egyptian and South American traditions of spirituality as well. The two stones are a potent gift and a symbol of deep respect from Ngati Whatua to the firefighters, as well as a method of assuaging the hurt understandable felt by these brave people as they attend scenes of disaster and loss. Similar stones are placed under Auckland and North Shore hospitals, for example. Meet Christine Jolly, one of Northpower’s Customer Excellence Representatives.

Northlander Monique Bradley is doing her bit to give back to the Northland Rescue Chopper Service – almost five years since they saved her life.

In 2015, Monique was thrown from a horse suffering a brain bleed and fractured spine. She is still feeling the effects of the injury but isn’t letting it hold her back from her teaching degree, working two jobs and riding her horses again.

Christine can provide guidance to almost any questions on you have. On any given day Christine deals with a wide range of queries, and if you need an electricity connection on to the Northpower Network – Christine makes it happen.

Christine has been with Northpower for over 20 years and loves it! She knows the business well but just as importantly knows what our customers want and works hard to make your life easy!

When it comes to shutdowns, Christine says she appreciates people’s understanding. “Shutdowns are inconvenient for us all but they are a reality as it is important we maintain our network to keep everyone safe and make sure there is always a reliable supply of electricity.”

Replacing aging infrastructure – Mangawhai line replacement

Spring Gardening?

This year we expect to spend $11m replacing equipment that has reached end of its life – including hundreds of poles, cross arms and conductors (powerlines) across the network. A recent large job in Mangawhai saw a team of 35 (including lines staff and traffic management) replace the power lines in Wood, Margaret and Robert Streets that supply over 200 homes.

When doing your spring clean up, make sure trees are well clear of powerlines.

All vegetation needs to be at least 4 metres from lines.

A huge amount of planning was involved to get it done within a day and a big thanks to the local businesses and residents for being so understanding.

To avoid power cuts at your place it is also important to make sure trees near your service line (the powerline from your property boundary to your home, business or shed) are well clear of the lines.

Time’s up for ‘free’ compulsory overtime

Dargaville Primary School’s gardening club of 80 students are set to take their knowledge of sustainable horticulture to a new level, with the installation of a new school garden thanks to Rabobank.

Employment law changed in 2016 to ensure staff get paid more than their usual hourly rate if they are required to work overtime, rather than just offered it.

Tom Macdonald were there on the build along with the local Rabobank staff, trading in the tools of finance for picks, spades and wheelbarrows. As Carters dropped off more building supplies, the team pitched in sawing, drilling and doing the heavy lifting.

“We’re proud to be able to help out in this way,” says Steve, shovel in hand.

“Teaching kids about where their food comes from, how to grow their own produce, and how to be sustainable is good for the future.”

Rabobank set out to give back to the community in this kind of way annually, choosing a worthy community project and pitching in to make it a reality. As for the 80 kids of the gardening club; their smiles and massive shout of ‘thank you Rabobank’ made it seem that Christmas had come early. 

It is important to note that the provisions only apply if an employer needs to require the employee to work.

There is nothing stopping an employer offering, and an employee accepting, extra work at their usual rate so long as the hours are safe.

Plenty of businesses will have employment agreements which still say “we can require you to work additional hours at your usual rate”. This is risky. If an employee raises a claim — the employer could find themselves counting back additional pay for a number of years.

The Postal Workers decision underlines the fact that a ‘one size fits all’ employment agreement is no longer enough for the modern workplace. Thought needs to go into the hours and overtime requirements of each employee.

If you’re unsure about whether the overtime rules affect your employment agreement(s), now could be a good time to seek legal advice. 

Teachers and students applied to a nationwide contest run by the bank and were ‘overjoyed’ to hear they had won, according to garden club coordinators and educators Karie and Megan, who established the club in the interests of teaching the real origins of food to kids.

“Thirty-five entries came in from around New Zealand, and we were lucky enough to win. We’re building garden beds, a tunnel house and have plans to add a fruit orchard, with one tree for each class.”

The changes were intended to deal with zero hour contracts, giving employees certainty about their hours of work or fair compensation for more flexible arrangements.

Until now, it was ambiguous whether ordinary full-time or part-time contracts fell under the rules, or only contracts with no guaranteed hours (zero hour contracts).

However, the recent court decision Postal Workers Union of Aotearoa Inc v New Zealand Post has confirmed that the law applies to any employment agreement where an employee is required to work overtime.

The extra compensation is not for the hours worked, but an additional amount for the hassle/uncertainty of having to remain available.

The court gave an example of an employee who couldn’t plan a range of family/community obligations outside his normal work hours because he never knew if he would be required to work.

Classic monsters hit the road

In the golden age of drive-in, B-grade monster movies, there is a special place reserved for 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon. Aside from being from the same era as some of the best in classic American cars, there’s a bit more, that this fun, frightening blockbuster has to do with a namesake closer to home, the 2020 Black Swamp Rod Run. Named for the road in Mangawhai, this local event brings out the ‘monsters’ of custom culture and top horsepower.

Just like the movie, a lot of that good old US steel is made in Detroit, the ‘motor city’. The event is open to all makes and models of classic cars, hot rods and bikes; the same kind of fleet that packed drive-ins in the 50s and 60s as the ‘creature’ became a cult icon and spawned several silly sequels.

Here’s another connection between the Black Swamp Rod Run and the creature feature — both take place in the heat of summer, by the seaside.

In the case of the Mangawhai run, festivities kick off at 9am on January 4, at the Moir Street Domain, with registrations $20 a car.

Then there’s a run to Waipu along some of the most beautiful coast in the nation, winding back along the road to a family fun day, picnic and live music in Mangawhai in the afternoon. Since it’s bigger than a summer blockbuster, only registered entrants can take part in these festivities; it’s a lot for organisers to plan! Hence the call is out now for folks to register their interest

Celebrating his greatest adventure  by Andy Bryenton

We all know that Sir Edmund Hillary was the first to scale Everest and that he traversed the icy wastes of Antarctica by tractor. The adventure he calls his greatest ever has now been made into a feature film, Ocean to Sky. It follows his 1977 voyage from the mouth of the Ganges river to the top of the previously unscaled Akash Parbat.

“It was a sort of dream that Ed had had for a long time: the idea of going all the way up a river from the ocean and finishing up on the top of a mountain,” said fellow adventurer Graeme Dingle.

“It was quite an appealing sort of idea, and I think when he suddenly realised that he could do it in an indigenous New Zealand machine (the jet boat) that it really struck on.”

Perhaps this was because the jet boat, developed by Kiwi genius Bill Hamilton, allowed access to places that a conventional craft could not go. Sir Ed wanted to not only trace the holy river to its source but to meet the people along the way and document on film the grand

and rugged landscape through which it flows.

A boat with a prop would likely get stuck in the rapids and gorges of the upper Ganges; the jet boat, with its innovative system, was a revolution in ‘77. This adventure proved that it was tough, clever and fit for purpose.

Those are words that could describe the character of Sir Ed himself on this epic journey, made more poignant as it was, for him, a pilgrimage to commemorate the death of his wife and daughter in an aeroplane crash.

The expedition faced altitude sickness, tigers, raging rapids and more before forging onward.
