A wish list drawn up by staff at Dargaville Hospital is slowly being ticked off thanks to donations from the community and substantial fundraising efforts from local service clubs.

Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive Debbie Evans said that the trust had raised more than $6,000 to purchase four recliner chairs for patients and their families to use while staying at Dargaville Hospital.

The wish list contains items, which are ‘above and beyond’ what the Northland DHB can provide, and the chairs were bought with support from Aratapu Hobson Trust, Northern  Dargaville Hospital operations manager Jen Thomas and Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive Debbie Wairoa Lions, Ruawai Evans (left) and representatives from Lions and Rotary Lions, Dargaville Rotary, Groups that helped fundraise for the recliners Nor thland Community Foundation Health Fund PLUS and services to the community which community donations. provides 24-hour emergency cover.

KDC says that with two harbours and a large coastline, Kaipara has significant exposure to predicted sea level rise — one big climate change risk.

The decision to sign was important for Mayor Jason Smith “because Kaipara people are concerned and council has a responsibility to show leadership here.

“KDC is already engaged actively in climate change work across many areas, and this declaration sends a further clear signal that we’re taking this seriously. I’m proud Kaipara is standing up here, joining with others declaring climate change to be an issue we’re working on.”

Dr Smith noted that at the same time

as KDC made its decision, on the other side of the world the UK Parliament declared a Climate Emergency for the United Kingdom.

“We’re not alone with our concerns, and the history books will show the timing of Kaipara’s aspirational declaration aligns with what’s going on in other places.”

The motion passed, and within a week Mayor Smith’s signature will join leaders of more than 60 other councils who have already signed the LGNZ Leaders’ Climate Change Declaration.

From next Friday, May 10 until May 22, the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville will host a display of artistic and technical skill that’s a bit out of the ordinary.

Plenty of Kiwis love a summer ‘barbie’ with all the trimmings.

Recent years have seen the rise of a new sensation in outdoor cooking. It’s called competitive barbecue, and it is to your dad’s snags and chops what centre court at Wimbledon is to pole tennis on the beach.

 The Fenney family are the force behind BIG D BBQ, and now Dayle is off to compete in the US at the world’s biggest barbecue contest

 Dargaville Quilters creating works for the exhibition

Rather than paint and canvas, Dargaville Quilters work with fabric and thread, crafting intricately designed works which are both attractive and practical.

Titled Dargaville Gems, the exhibition embraces all manner of quilting techniques and traditions, with designs ranging from the geometric to the natural.

On show as well will be everything from bags and runners, through to cushions and wall art.

The opening night on Friday, May 10 will be a chance to meet the artists and buy raffles with the proceeds going to Northern Wairoa St John. Dargaville Quilters have raised money in previous years for local organisations including the Kaipara Community Health Trust. 

Hearkening from the lore of the American South’s ‘pitmasters’, named for their slow and low-cooking barbecue pits fed with smouldering wood and charcoal, this sport is taking off in New Zealand. Local proponents, BIG D BBQ, is already catering favourites, though pitmaster Dayle Fenney insists that the competition menu is very different. Now a chance has arisen thanks to fellow masters of meat and steel BBQ War, who have been invited to the biggest competitive barbecue event on the planet — the American Royale.

cooking dawn to dusk and beyond. Such a schedule means a whole group of 10 is needed, and BBQ War can only field three for 2019. That meant a tap on the shoulder for Dayle, along with a ‘dream team’ roster of other Kiwi barbecue artisans. They’re off to Kansas City in September, and training is already afoot. With support from Empire Liquor Centre in Dargaville, Jack Daniels, The Rock and US host Swift Fresh Pork, plus Fern Ridge here in New Zealand, the 10-person Kiwi barbecue crew will include our own local pitmaster. It’s a chance to go grill to grill with the world’s best, and we wish him luck. 

The official opening last Saturday of the Paparoa Medical Centre and the community library was “the end result of two years of bold decisions, hard work, uncertainty and nail-biting.”

“Two years ago, when this building came on the market the society debated the challenges involved in taking on such a major project,” said Paparoa Medical Society chair, Graham Taylor.

“Taking (it) on involved significant risk. The long-term benefits of a centrally located clinic, purpose-built with level access were very attractive. The society took the plunge and committed to considerable debt backed by personal guarantees and loans. The sale of the existing property improved the society’s financial position. Unfortunately, that sale meant closure of medical services in the interim as well as the library.

“The society is very mindful of the disruption caused to both the medical fraternity and the library patrons.

“The new building has required considerably more refitting than was originally anticipated.“ Mr Taylor thanked supporters of the project, including Paparoa Lions, Progressive Paparoa Inc, John and Mary Wearmouth, Derek and Andrea Hope and the Ready Relief Team from the Plymouth Brethren Church.

“We are greatly indebted to and appreciative of their contribution.

Collectively their efforts have supported the society to the tune of $95,000.” 

Last year the annual appeal saw the Northland community raise a record amount — a total of $385,000.

Two new Sikorsky S-76 C helicopters are nearing refurbishment for air ambulance work by Northland Emergency Services Trust.

NEST will sell two older model helicopters to defray the costs of the new machines. The American-built Sikorsky S-76 features twin turboshaft engines, four-bladed main and tail rotors and retractable landing gear.

Meanwhile, NEST has entered into a form of partnership with the Auckland rescue service to cover the northern region for the next three years.

Kaipara is included in the area north from Counties Manukau, including Northland, Waitemata, Auckland and

Counties Manukau District Health Board regions, and the district now has upgraded helicopter landing sites, the most recent at Maungaturoto.

NEST chairman Paul Ahlers, says in the future, community donations and sponsorship would still play a vital role in maintaining the vital rescue service.

“We rely so much on our community and the funds raised means Northlanders will have helped us to update the aircraft and provide the best possible service we can.”

In the first three months of this year, there have been 287 missions carried out compared with 227 for the same period last year, and compared to the 1,000 missions during the year itself. 

A long-term project to recreate significant stands of kauri trees on publicly owned land around the Kaipara Harbour has been launched by The Kauri Museum at Matakohe.

“The trust board is delighted to announce a new initiative The Kauri Regeneration Programme,“ said museum general manager, Dr Tracey Wedge.

“Our project allows people with any sort of connection to the Kaipara to contribute to an environmental project in a way that gives them a sense of involvement and ownership.

The deafening silence  by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

As a constituent MP, I talk to dozens of people every day. They are a cosmopolitan bunch. They can be farmers, industrialists, other MPs (from both sides of the House), children, and mostly, constituents who need to talk about their issues, their concerns, their suggestions.

One group I can’t talk to, apparently, is the NZ Transport Agency nor, apparently, are they allowed to talk to you.

Why is this concerning? I’ll tell you why — it smacks of petty politics.

Did you know that the new Matakohe bridges were now open to traffic? That’s a great job by the transport agency, and they should be loudly proclaiming their achievement with at the very least an opening ceremony.

However, they didn’t. All they did is move the road cones to one side and let the traffic through. Why? Maybe because it was a National Party project instigated, funded and construction begun during the term of the previous National-led government.

Was the transport agency told to keep it low-key because of that? I can think of no other reason, because such an undertaking for the community by the agency and its contractors deserve recognition, and they didn’t get it.

Petty politics.

Not for the first time. The NZTA has been targeted before by the government.

You’ll remember the self-styled saviour of the regions (but in fact deliverer of nothing) Shane Jones in a gross breach

of the cabinet manual interfered over the Semenoff safety issues.

Those issues were complex and in my view best left to the experts not the bluff and bluster of this parliament’s preeminent grandstander.

Coming back to the NZ Transport Agency, there is an issue there of National MPs being shut out of meetings with them. My colleague, Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon has raised the matter, but other National MPs including myself have experienced it too.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford has accused Andrew of “playing politics” by raising the issues, but then says: “No-one wants NZTA officials tied up in meetings.”

Excuse me? Meeting a local MP to discuss local issues is part of every government agency’s job. That’s what the MP is there for — that’s what the agencies are there for. Just not, apparently, under this government. 

Funding workshops available A series of community funding workshops are being held in Kaipara and wider Northland to advise the public about what resources are available to support various community projects.

The workshops are being run in a joint initiative between the Kaipara District Council, Whangarei District Council and Far North District Council.

“At each event, there will be a brief presentation from the key providers, then tabletop groups where people can discuss finer details about applications and what funding is available for their group.

“It’s free, and we’d love to get a few people along,” said KDC spokesman, Ben Hope.

ost farmers are aware, getting 2-3 litres of colostrum to calves in the first 12 hours of life is important to develop a good immune system and prevent disease not only in their first weeks but for the rest of their life. There is, however, an important requirement for this colostrum, it must be of good quality.

But what is quality colostrum? It should be free of organic matter. Dirt, faeces and sawdust all deactivate the immunoglobulins making them useless for the calf. It must be free of bacterial contamination.

Feeding bacteria to calves is likely to give them food poisoning, Salmonella and E.coli love to grow in milk and can cause scours. Finally, it must have a good amount of immunoglobulin, the proteins that carry immunity, this can be tested via a Brix Refractometer.

Colostrum quality varies between cows, so using a vaccine like Rotavec, boosts the amount of immunoglobulin present in the milk = Higher quality colostrum, targeted specifically at bugs that could be causing scours on your farm, Rotavirus, Coronavirus and E.coli. This product is only available under veterinary authorisation, talk to your vet to find out if this is appropriate for your farm.

Winter could be mild not wild  by Andy Bryenton

A warmer, drier winter season is predicted through to June by climate science experts, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), as a weak El Nino event, continues to make its presence felt in the central Pacific.

What does this mean for Northland?

The scientists responsible for predicting our weather present a series of probabilities pointing to less extreme cold spells, lower than average rainfall and higher air temperatures. There’s also likely to be a predominance of westerly winds thanks to the way that atmospheric pressure is shaping up in the wider area around New Zealand.

Some of that warmth is due to a ‘marine heat wave’ that has warmed the Tasman Sea, making it act as a brake on extreme chills.

The bad news for farmers means that there will be lower than average river and stream flows and soil moisture on the way, though milder conditions may favour pasture growth. For the household, it’s a reprieve from extremes in the cold, which can lead to bigger heating bills. The predictions even mention ‘unseasonably warm periods’ for easterly regions, thanks to that warmer than average Tasman Sea.

Ready for the new season Winter is some people’s favourite season; after all, there is nothing quite as satisfying as being warm, dry and comfortable while a storm lights up the night sky outside. There are a few unexpected things about the season that always seems to sneak up on us, over and above the obvious tasks such as stacking kindling and checking the insulation. Don’t get caught out this winter.

One of the best parts of having a garden is the bountiful crop of veggies and fruits, which can boost your supplies, cut your grocery budget and even boost up your immune system with vitamins and minerals. Winter is no time to slacken the pace in the garden.

Indeed, it’s time to plant cauliflower, broccoli and spinach, as well as plants such as strawberries, which will not fruit for some time, but can get established in the relatively mild Northland winter for better performance later.

The same holds true of apple trees, and their fellow fruits such as pears and nectarines.

With the rain and cold, it’s great to be indoors. However, pests share our desire to remain warm and dry. This season is one in which little rodents can enter the home through gaps and cracks.

ways, make sure there’s no easy access to food in the pantry, and if you know you’ve got a little invader, it’s time to either get a trap, a cat or call the pest control pros.

The same goes for other creepy crawlies. Don’t be surprised to see spiders indoors right now, or a large number of mantises. Most of these insects are harmless, and some native spider species need of a helping hand, so catching them in a jar or cup and putting them outside is better than squashing them.

Moreover, when did you last check the gutters, pipes and the tank itself for contaminants?

Take a good look at the sources of water flowing into your home, and if you have filtration systems in place, this is the time to change them.

It all means a healthier season, and a body that isn’t fighting water-borne nasties will be better able to stave off colds and flu. 

A recent study by Massey University on retirement expenditure has outlined a stark difference between the retirement costs of living in the city and living in the country.

Those who are choosing to leave the city for the provinces may be making a wise choice.

The study shows that a retired couple wanting to live a life with ‘choices’ (options for entertainment, holidays, technology upgrades around the home and the like) will need a nest egg of more than $700,000 over and above their national super entitlements.

In the regions, Kaipara included, this figure is slashed back to under $500,000. In real terms, this can be the

difference between selling up a home in a desirable Auckland suburb and buying a new home here in the north or investing in a rental property locally to boost post-retirement income.

Massey University’s study also highlights the fact that close to fourfifths of all Kiwi couples approaching retirement age are mortgage free.

However, city-side rates and the costs associated with living in a metropolitan area are also higher than those in the country.

Add to this the factor of entertainment and recreational choices, and a clear distinction becomes apparent. Landfill opposition to hold public meeting  by Paul Campbell

The battle continues in the Fight the Tip organisation’s bid to prevent a landfill for Auckland’s rubbish in the Dome Valley and a catchment for the Kaipara Harbour.

Save the Tip member Michelle Carmichael says a public meeting has been called for Monday, May 13 in the Wellsford Community Centre where Northland MP, Matt King will speak and the community will be updated on progress.

The action group has already petitioned parliament, and also written to the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern as well as Auckland local body politicians.

Save the Tip says in these communications that the group was started ‘because we have grave concerns about the impact that Waste Management’s proposed Auckland regional landfill in Dome Valley will have on our environment and people’.

The proposed tip covers a catchment area for the Hoteo River, which flows into the Kaipara Harbour and its extensive snapper breeding grounds,

as well as commercial and recreational fishing activity.

The Auckland Council has yet to rule on resource consent for the landfill.

However, Fight the Tip says it has major concerns that Auckland Council or its independent commissioners cannot possibly give an unbiased environmental decision as Auckland Council are in commercial dealings with the applicant.

It will, therefore, be also considering the fact that landfill is the least expensive option in monetary terms — not environmental terms.

The government has been asked to ‘urgently review the Overseas Investment Office application that has been granted to Chinese-owned Waste Management, ‘because of far-reaching effects of a failure of that landfill, which would involve the Kaipara and Northland districts’. 

In an era when everybody wants to make the next cute, hip, urban-styled micro SUV, one car maker has decided to do things a little differently. Well, it’s the way they’ve been doing it since 1970, when they called their product the LJ (light jeep) 10. You’d know its lineage by another name, especially if you judge an off-roader by its ability rather than its size.

It’s the Suzuki Jimny, and it’s been building a reputation and a niche which few other automakers are willing to challenge, let alone contest for dominance in. Variant names such as Escudo, Samurai and Sierra have come and gone, but still, there are few examples out there of similar machines.

The Jimny still boasts a ladder chassis like a big, beefy Range Rover. It even has true four-wheel drive with locking hubs, like a Land Cruiser, and it still has the footprint of a single tennis shoe.

It also looks so cute and fierce that it is elevated to the same level as a new Fiat 500 or Mini. This, the pug dog with wheels.

More seriously, the Suzuki resembles like a tiny version of Mercedes-Benz’s G-Wagon. It’s so little that in Japan they fit the Jimny with a 646cc inline 3 and register it as a ‘kei car’; small
