We are still months away from the annual Pink Ribbon Appeal for the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand, but plans are afoot to show some support in Dargaville for Mother’s Day. A pink ribbon themed day has been organised by the Good Life Store in Dargaville’s Victoria Street, with proceeds going to the cause. Sweet treats and cafe-style drinks will be on offer for patrons, who can book in small groups to take part in the fundraiser.

“It’s a very good cause, and it’s something fun to do with mum for mothers day,” says store co-owner Drew Wardle.

“We are now at a point where the case for change is well made, and the policy has been robustly tested and improved.

We have listened to concerns, and now it is time to move forward with these reforms,” Nanaia Mahuta said.

The government’s plans are that the Three Waters service will be provided by four publicly owned entities from July 2024. 

The Kaipara District Council has voted unanimously to adopt a library strategy that aims to build new facilities for Dargaville and Mangawhai and establish a mobile library vehicle for the heartland of the district.

The strategy was created by Sue Sutherland Consulting, with extensive input from elected members, the public, and library staff. Mayor Jason Smith welcomed it as a comprehensive look at library services into the future, calling it “our kind of thing, done the Kaipara way.”

The strategy aims to introduce a mobile library that brings services and resources to the rest of the district, using the budget already allocated in the Long Term Plan as seed capital.

The recipients of this year’s Creative Communities grants have been revealed, with a range of projects spanning many artistic disciplines supported.

Dargaville Little Theatre was granted a disbursement to help promote youth theatre. Mary Hurley-Brown will receive assistance in combining Celtic and Māori folk tales and legends to create cross-cultural narratives.

The Mangawhai Artists group is pleased to receive funding to assist with its have a go day for teenagers and adults, offering four different art classes across four different media.

Meanwhile, the Lions Club of Ruawai has been granted funds to help populate the town with colourful murals and civic art.

Judy Stokes will offer workshops in photography thanks to a grant, while David Gunson and his film-making

team will use the windfall to create a film trailer in anticipation of shooting a major local feature-length piece of cinema.

The Chase’s Gorge Camp Club at Baylys Beach will receive material help in putting together a book of the true stories, photos and memories.

Also, at Baylys Beach, the new Bill Hyland Community Centre will receive funding towards a series of local creative workshops.

The Dargaville Arts Association will use its grant funding to expand on its successful series of free public art classes, with additional courses in the ceramic arts and traditional Māori weaving and textile creativity.

Dargaville’s volunteer firefighters attended 28 call-outs through until April 24, averaging one call-out a day.

Kaihū Country Music Club is reconvening this May in anticipation of a good turnout of patrons after almost a year of silence.

Stories of rebellion and redemption in early Kaipara have been gathered together in a series of audio interviews on local history

The club is starting again as part of the Kaihū and musical community after the relaxing of Covid restrictions.

“The club has been going for 20 years.

The club is not restricted to the musically attuned but is open to everybody who appreciates the genre. People from across Northland have attended.

“We are remote, and it is great to know that we have an event locally based. Being a support for the people and the event to continue offering that means a lot,” May said.

“It is about enjoyment and a way of life.

These days families can be complex, meaning previous relationships, children, multiple properties or family trusts all need to be considered when making your will.

If not, you may leave your will wide open to being challenged — a stressful process for all involved.

Having no will can create a costly and stressful process for those trying to deal with your estate. It’s not quite as simple as just filling in a form either, despite the promises of DIY will kits. Unfortunately, a perceived saving setting up your will on the cheap today often results in greatly increased executor or administration fees down the track — eating up the estate.

What goes in your will Your will takes into account your personal situation, any debts, property, assets and what should be done with them, and instructions for administering your estate. It’s also useful to consider non-financial matters, such as who will look after your children and pets, what happens to your treasured personal effects, and your funeral arrangements.

It is your chance to expressly state your wishes, although there are laws your will needs to comply with, or it can be challenged.

Administration Your will requires you to appoint an executor(s) and trustee(s). The executor’s job is to administer the estate (for example, act as a contact person, apply for probate).

You can appoint anyone as your executor/trustee.

Moreover, you can appoint more than one, but it’s important to consider your choice carefully.

Choose someone responsible and likely to be well and able to perform the role.

To be valid, your will must be: • in writing • signed by you and two independent witnesses, with all three being present together and with all three seeing each other sign • intended by you to take effect as a will, and • completed when you have legal capacity Your will needs to be stored somewhere

How we leave this life is often not up to our choosing, but it’s comforting to know that for many hundreds of Kiwis faced with a difficult final chapter to their lives, Hospice care provides peace, comfort and support.

As society opens up to having the often difficult conversation about death and dying, the role of Hospice in providing compassionate care for the terminally ill is now more openly acknowledged.

Certainly, those who work tirelessly to provide palliative care and support for their families and friends deserve recognition, from the volunteers at local hospice second-hand shops raising funds through to the medical staff and support workers on the front lines.

The origins of Hospice care stretch back to the middle ages, with the Knights of Malta, an order of warrior monks who dedicated themselves to protecting pilgrims on the road to biblical sites of religious importance. Early in their campaign, they discovered that bandits and warfare were less of an issue than sickness and injury when people attempted long journeys in those primitive times. The preceptor of the order established the first great hospital in 1065. Here, medical wisdom from the east and from the world of Islam was blended with traditional European healing

inexplicable. Hospice NZ believes that a frank conversation about end of life care is very much needed in society, and has resources online for those who wish to know more. In New Zealand, Hospice care became formalised under Hospice New Zealand in 1986, with a generous donation from the Cancer Society helping pave the way.

Today, Hospice NZ helps nearly 20,000 people each year, including those with a terminal diagnosis and their families. More than half of this number were patients who died in hospice care, afforded the peace and freedom from pain that this

offers. It’s a common misconception that all Hospice patients reside in a special ward or clinic. More than half can remain at home with loved ones or stay at the retirement home where they already live and still receive full support.

In addition, 70% of family and whānau received bereavement counselling and assistance after the passing of their loved one, as hospice staff worked alongside people from 109 different self-identified cultures and many religious faiths to make the end of life less frightening and

Burial, mourning and remembrance are so deep a part of the human psyche that they may predate what scientists define as modern humanity.

“Humans use symbols to communicate and convey these abstract thoughts and ideas,” says anthropologist Paige Madison.

“Art and jewellery, for example, communicate concepts about beliefs, values, and social status. Mortuary rituals, too, have been put forward as a key example of symbolic thought, with the idea that deliberate treatment of the dead represents a whole web of ideas.

Mourning the dead involves remembering the past and imagining a future in which we too will die.”

The discovery of bones carefully interred in a South African cave made experts who study human thought question just how deep a belief in the sanctity of death runs in our ancestry. It is because the cache of bones belonged not to a modern human, but to one of our primitive ancestors, Homo naledi, a now-disappeared link to a pre-human past. These proto-humans evidently were aware of their own mortality and had religious or spiritual beliefs.

Of course, human history is filled with funerary monuments that celebrate the lives and chronicle the achievements of notable people, such as the tombs in Egypt’s Valley of Kings or the impressive Taj Mahal complex. It’s natural for families and loved ones to want a place to come and remember the departed. A fitting monument is often something which is planned, discussed and designed with family involved, even if it’s not on the scale of the pyramids or the mausoleums of the Chinese emperors.

Far from being a morbid consideration, choosing a memorial for oneself with family and friends involved can be a rewarding process, which touches on aspects of the things we value in life and brings them into focus long before our passing.

Dairy sector’s staff search relief  by Andy Bryenton

Farmers’ advocacy groups in the dairy sector have welcomed a boost in the number of international dairy staff coming into the country for Gipsy Day, June 1.

The recent changes announced by the government will increase the number of international workers allowed into New Zealand under the 2022 dairy class exception from 300 to 800, in addition to the 200 workers who were allowed to come here in 2021.

“We made it clear to the government that the 300 dairy border class exception workers previously approved was nowhere near enough to meet the demands onfarm and reduce the current high levels of farmer stress,” says DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle.

“The government’s decision to increase the number of international workers by 500 is a step in the right direction to reduce the pressure on farm teams. We will continue to advocate for more to be allowed into New Zealand to help address the significant staff shortage.”

That shortage is dire, with an estimated 4,000 jobs needed to be filled in the sector. A combination of factors, including Covid-19’s lingering repercussions, record low unemployment, and the difficulty of attracting new staff with tempting wages in a high-inflation environment,

have stacked to cause considerable stress. Farmers also risk exhaustion and burnout from long hours filling the gaps where workers cannot be found, as nature does not stop the cycle of the seasons for human economics.

Exacerbating the problem is a similar issue in foreign markets. With Canada and Australia’s borders opening up, Kiwi workers are being lured by $75,000 salaries to head overseas. Incoming workers on the class exemption must be guaranteed a base rate of $28 an hour, equating to approximately $59,000 in comparison.

“We continue to encourage Kiwis to join our sector, and farmers have been taking a range of steps to make dairy farming more attractive to staff. However, in such a tight labour market, the contribution international staff make to keep farms running is critical,” says Dr Mackle.

“From here, we strongly encourage farmers who want international workers on board for calving to apply through the border exception process.”

Erosion control planting offer  by Paul Campbell

Low-cost poplars and willows are now on offer from the Northland Regional Council for the approaching winter planting season aimed at a host of benefits, including stabilising land and helping hold fertile soil in place.

NRC’s Rick Stolwerk says the benefits the two species offer is one of the reasons it sells both at low cost from its Flyger Road nursery near Whangārei.

“Keeping fertile soils on the land is in the interest of all Northlanders, and without the protection poplars and other trees afford, hills simply erode and wash away in severe rainstorms,” he says.

“Eroded sediment is Northland’s biggest natural pollutant, and preventing this at source is one of the reasons the regional council has invested heavily in its 16-hectare poplar and willow nursery.”

He describes poplars and willows as the ‘unsung heroes’ of our environment.

“They stabilise pastoral hill country, increase water storage, reduce sediment run-off, improve water quality, benefit stock and enhance the farm environment.”

Orders are open now. A poplar or willow tree will cost between $4.60 to $14.40 depending on size and whether it’s planted for erosion control or another purpose.

Protective sleeves for three-metre poles are $8.60 each. Depending on contractor availability, the regional council is also heavily subsidising the planting of poles up to an additional $8.05 for each pole.

Consultation Document – Māori Freehold Land Rates Postponement and Remission Policy Council has reviewed its Māori Freehold Land Rates Postponement and Remission Policy (the Policy) and is now proposing some amendments to the Policy as a result of the review.

Council resolved at the Council meeting on 27 April 2022 to consult with the community on the proposed amendments and approved a Consultation Document that contains the reasons for the proposed amendments and a draft of the Policy incorporating all proposed amendments.

Copies of the Consultation Document, as well as a submission form and a link to the existing Policy will be available from 2 May 2022 on Council’s website at kaipara.govt.nz/haveyoursay Hardcopy documents may be inspected at Kaipara District Council Service Centres at Dargaville and Mangawhai and at the Dargaville Public Library, and Community Libraries situated in Maungaturoto, Mangawhai, Paparoa and Kaiwaka.

The Consultation Document includes detailed information on how interested parties can present their views to Council; in person and via a written submission, or both.

Feedback may be provided between 9.00am Monday 2 May and 5pm Friday 20 May 2022. All written submissions will be acknowledged.
