Donation boosts beach community by Rose Stirling
Baylys Beach is to get a new community centre as the result of an anonymous donation which will provide a state of the art building, housing a hall, lifesaving equipment, a first aid unit and an apartment.

The chair of the newly formed Baylys Beach Community Trust, Graeme Ramsey, says: “a local benefactor has given the people of Baylys Beach a very generous gift. “We have wanted a community facility like this for a long time, but we’ve never known how we would be able to pay for it, and now we have something that I think absolutely exceeds our wildest dreams.” The donation has allowed the trust to purchase land on the corner of Seaview Road and Bayly Street. “We’re working to a specification which includes garaging facilities for surf life saving equipment, a first aid room and a self contained apartment in which surf life savers can stay when they are out here patrolling over the summer months. At the moment they come from outside the area and are required to rent a property in the area. So it’s an immediate cost saving for them. “On top of that it will be a multipurpose community centre with kitchen and other facilities, so it can be used for functions, it can be used for play groups, indoor bowls and whatever the community needs. “The hall part of it will be over 97 square metres alone. The trust plans to start building in the spring and is encouraging local people to get involved in the building process. “Already a number of local firms have spoken about their support for the build. So it’s going to be a real community
